GPe is not going to happen soon by the looks, two devs have bricked their Ultras so far...
I'm guessing that your ultra is locked to Bell? then the only option as far as I know is using Bell released firmware untill it is unlocked from Bell

Hi,
my phone is unlocked, i have unlocked it already doe its sim lock free. but unlocking simlock has nothing to do with firmware flash.
so i guess nothing can be done for branded phone to be flashed with google play edition?
Thanks.

Well if it is bootloader unlocked and you want 4.4 have a look at the omni or one of the two CM11 threads.
As for GPe no non GPe are running a GPe rom yet that I know of, there are a few builds that get some way through the boot process but not to a usable system yet

Your phone is CARRIER-unlocked - that is not the same thing as having an unlocked bootloader.
As far as I am aware, ALL Bell Xperia Z Ultra's have a locked bootloader that *cannot* be unlocked.
If you plug your phone in to your computer and run the PC Companion - you can upgrade to 290 - you just cannot have root given the locked bootloader and that the only tested method to root at the moment requires an unlocked bootloader.

Hassan is of course completely right. He's been in pain for too long now, and I'm starting to understand that Bell is indeed the spawn of Satan himself.
You'll never be able to flash a non-Sony ROM on your Ultra, unless Bell chooses to give you the unlock key, or if the world's most competent dev figures it out himself (which has happened several times before, but don't count on it).

So if I understand bell choose to lock our device right?! I think it's time to have a nice talk with a supervisor I didn't want to go bell but the Zu is exclusive to bell here.

Root on Stock Sony 4.4.2 with a locked bootloader is only available via installing via a recovery, which can only be installed from a rooted device or via the exploit found in 4.2 (532).
Which means you will have to downgrade to 532, install [NUT]'s dual recovery (no need to root first, flash the C6806 rooted 757 zip in recovery and then flash the stripped c6806 757 ftf file.
Of course, you could have done that for a short while using the US generic / unbranded files posted in the dev thread.

As far as I know the bootloader is locked on the bell version and cannot be unlocked which is the reason I won't buy it even though they are selling used for cheap in my area

I'm in the same boat. I rooted my Bell Ultra Z right after I bought it, but then I accidentally upgraded to .757, and now I need to get back to 532 to be be able to root it and get rid of all this bell crap installed on the phone. Would someone be able to point me in the right direction? This is all so confusing to me because of the whole locked bootloader issue.

I think it is UK, Europe for sure. Unbranded, too.
I actually flashed a C6802 Firmware on my C6833 which took away LTE, but left everything else in tact.
Unfortunately from what I have read the C6802 simply lacks the LTE chip on the SOC so actually there is no way to get LTE.
But feel free to try. If all fails you can still always flash back.

I am battling a different problem at the moment, so cannot try today.
I hope someone has the time to try it out, since from what I understand, C6802 does indeed have same SoC as C6833, which is SD800 MSM8974
There were discussions that 'maybe' the antenna could be different, but my gut feeling says it is the same.

Yes did flash direct via Flashtool in flashmode. Without any errors.
Only when it goes to"sleep", ...SOD and followed by a crashdump.
What could be wrong with my build.prop file?

Unbranded does not mean no bloatware. It just means, that it is not a carrier branded version like vodafone or t-mobile, o2 or whatever with their special software installed.
What you want is a vanilla android version for the Xperia Z ultra.
Look in the development forums. Maybe someone is working on this.
With root access you can also delete unwanted apps, though in the newer android versions, you can also disable unwanted apps what essentially freezes them.
lol i don't mean bloatware in that way i am fine with sonys UI its just o2 version has o2 bootup and loadsa of o2 software pre installed and i would like to flash it to the international unbranded carrier free
if this what i am looking for?

Utra Z, Google Play Edition or Sony unlocked ?

They are both about the same price, so which is the more desirable/better version ?
Lets throw in a poll while we're at it..............
This article basically says that text, icon, and font size (which are very important factors to me) are larger on the Google Play edition, but the Sony version has better software optimization for this device.
http://www.theverge.com/2013/12/20/5229978/sony-xperia-z-ultra-z-ultra-google-play-edition-review
Which one runs graphics intensive games more smoothly ?
Tough call - totally depends on your personal preference. I'd go with the Sony version as it's almost as clean as the stock android and I actually like their walkman, album app (& album widget) better than the stock versions.
Sony version. You can flash the GPe ROM on the Sony version, but you can't flash a Sony ROM on the GPe version (yet). The stock Sony ROM is very good.

Sony sell both the c6806 and c6833 LTE versions, the GPe only comes in the c6806 flavour
The GPe will get the update to 4.4.3 well before Sony release it for their own phones, but once released for the GPe it should only be a day or two before it's ported to the Sony hardware - as long as there isn't too big a change to the kernel.

can i flash .402 even though...

hey guys, im from the UK and have not got the .69 or .402 update ( unbranded and unlocked ) could i flash the germany .402 firmware and it would have no consequences?

Yes! My phone came with UK unbranded firmware and flashed the German unbranded 2 days ago. Works like a charm! Actually I highly recommend doing that ASAP cause the UK firmware is known for getting released 2 weeks later after a new firmware gets rolled out! So you don't have to worry about waiting for future updates...

Yes. unlocking bootloader will wipe the data on the device, so DO BACKUP.
And no. You don't need to Unlock BL to flash Stock ROM. Only to flash custom kernels and ROMs and which is not even always the case

Thanks for replying doomlord. Can I root it easily? would I need to upgrade it to 4.4.2 stock oem rom first?
OTA update doesn't show any firmware updates available (which I know is common for prototype phones)
No, just keep yourself on the current firmware and:
- Root using Bin4ry's root tool
- Backup the TA partition
- Update to the latest firmware (.757) using Flashtool
- Unlock the bootloader using Flashtool
- Root by flashing Jackie's kernel
All the steps are here.

Thanks Lord Manhattan. None of the root solutions worked (bin4ry's root tool, kingoroot, 1 click root, and vroot.

That's what I thought too. I have had quite a few prototype / engineering sample phones and most of them are locked down pretty hard.
When they boot up they say "this device is a prototype. Accordingly it collects and sends usage information to Sony Mobile in order for us to improve the device."
On the back of the devices they had the sony name and the xperia logo covered with black tape. On the front they had a silver tape 5 digit number covering the sony name. They were represented to me to be prototypes. Maybe they were internal close to final prototypes.
Also Antutu installs and runs which other Z Ultra prototypes would not install or run. It would pop up and warn you (as Sony didn't want the specs leaked) I can screen cap or post any of the info from 1 of the non-upgraded units.

Local freight auction. I have gotten a lot of odd, obscure, and interesting phones, etc. from them.

I think I am going to keep 1 to goof around with(til I get bored and move on to the next play phone) A friend already bought 1 and another friend wants 1 too. So the 2 that are left I will probably sell locally or on that one online auction site.

If you are certain that their bootloader can be unlocked then why don't you sell it off/send one to a developer?

This shows up on the first bootup after factory resetting the phone.

I think the bootloader is unlocked as I flashed the jackie kernel to 3 of them and in the "about info" it shows jackies kernel. The service menu shows "bootloader unlocked"
I sent the IMEI's to the Sony Dev site and they sent back the bootloader unlock codes (which I unlocked using the flashtool)
I didn't know if I would be violating forum rules by even mentioning selling one.
Also, so far none of them have shown any weird prototype behavior.

Nah, I don't think you're breaking any rules. You didn't steal them, so you're on dry ground (I think). The bootloader is indeed unlocked, but I would've flashed a generic and official firmware to get rid of the prototype status. Who knows what tracking services and stuff like that is running on those things.
@DooMLoRD is probably interested in some files or something before you flash anything?

Okay. I have 2 that are untouched.
I thought I did flash the stock .757 (C6806_14.3.A.0.757_1276-1569_R3C.ftf is the name of the file I flashed)

Okay, but does it still say prototype even after you've flashed 757?

Yes it does. That same popup shows up on the first boot. I factory reset, clear the cache, and clear the davlik cache before & after flashing.

Hmm, that's kind of strange @DooMLoRD? Or?

[Q] Z2 firmware upgrade

Hi All!
I have a T-Mobile version of Z2. If I flash the unlocked firmware version will I receive OTA updates for this? Or Sony checks my IMEI and give me update acorrdingly? I want to rid all of the T-Mobile bloatwares
Thanks!
Hi,
there are two ways to get rid of this:
1st install any official Rom via Flashtool (so your warranty isn't broken).
2nd way is to root device and just change the customer ID then you get the official Sony Firmare via Sony Update Service.
Via Flashtool you've got the option to flash back the T-Mobile Firmware.
Greets,

Thanks! So, if I understand correctly if I flash the official unlocked ROM via Flashtool, after that when a new update comes in OTA I will get the T-Mobile version because the phone's customer ID?
Anyone else
If you update with an OTA on an unlocked bootloader you will brick your device for sure so dont do it, just flash stock kernel and relock your bootloader and then you can update with an OTA.
Hope this is enough info.

I'm talking about locked bootloader, but network unlocked. I bought my phone from T-Mobile, but with SIM unlocked and I think I will get the general firmware earlier than T-Mobile version, plus bloatfree.
Flash Generic FTF and all updates you receive via OTA will be for that Generic FTF, no T-Mobile stuff will be installed it if via OTA if you have network free firmware.
Hope that helps you
I am on T mobile Croatia. I flashed inernational rom with flashtool, after that i got 4.4.4 OTA same day it was released. No root, no unlocked bootloader.
