Z Ultra GPE Root update and Ta Back up - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Now from what I understand there is no root method for this device just as yet now my question is how different is the Sony branded Z Ultra from the GPE version besides android version. I all's know that root is needed to back up the TA partition so is there a work around for your our device.
Sent from my C6806_GPe using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

The GPe version doesn't have the same type of TA partition as the Xperia model AFAIK, but you still have to unlock the boot loader of the GPe to root it.

That I understand but how is the back up of the ta partition made is root is required to relock the boot loader

You can't backup TA. You root, you lose.
Or you can downgrade (the Xperia model if that's the one you have) to 532, root it, backup TA, update to 290 and lose root, unlock the bootloader and root it again. The difference this time is that you'll have the TA backup. It's a helluva way of doing it, but it's your only option right now.

Nope, you can't do that with the GPe. Root it and lose it. It's as simple as that (for now).

Thanks for the info but I don't think the recovery is stable for the GPE its still testing and I'm not looking for a brick right now can afford another device right now so I'll just wait

[Q] Rooting, Unlocked Bootloader, Custom Recovery

So I I finally rooted, backed up my TA partition, unlocked the bootloader, and flashed CWM/TWRP. Took me forever to do on windows 8, but finally figured it out.
My question is, what effect does flashing OTA updates and/or ftf's have? Will I just lose root? Or will I lose custom recovery as well? Just want to make sure since i'm sure the B.2.257 ftf will be posted shortly and I will want to flash it!
Similarly, if I were to change the CDA to get B.2.257 OTA, would I just lose root? or would I lose recovery as well?
I don't know about ota but flashing a ftf makes you recovery and root go bye bye.

Yes you will have lost the DRM keys, but from 4.4 on we dont need them for xreality (bravia) to work.

Confirmed for Netflix. Warranty is the other consideration. I'd say it's worth doing the downgrade and backing up TA.

i think i didnt lose DRM and Xreality(Bravia) , because i downgrade to 4.3 and xreality works fine...
also before downgrade i successfully backed up TA on 4.4.2 rooted frimware.
What about OTA, will you get a notification when there is an update ?

Updates don't need ta, only locked bootloader. Your ta will be null as you didn't back it up before unlocking.

[Q] ROOT

Hello, I want to root my XPERIA Z2 but I have never done this before, so I have some questions.
1) If I flash the Recovery used to root, will the stock ROM be affected?
2) After root, will I continue receiving the official updates? If not, how can I update it manually?
3) Can I save the stock ROM to an image for future unroot? How?
4) What do I will lose with root?
To root your Z2 you need to unlock your bootloader and flash a kernel with recovery included of which within you can flash a root zip
Kernel and system are seperate so your rom wont be affected but they do depend on eachother
Root doesent affect anything at all and neither does unlocking your bootloader, you lose nothing at all
You can backup your rom in cwm and restore later, you can also unroot from within the root management app

3.just flash ftf ...available in general section..
by flashing it will automatically unroot your device.

Does rooting screw up DRM keys or whatever like it did on other sony devices in the past?
I am REALLY thinking about this as my next device, and if I can't root without screwing up the device, I'll be put off.

Think of it like this, your drm keys with Z2 are currently uselss, losing your drm keys breaks nothing, (ive tested this)
(in simple words = almost 0 drawbacks of unlocking your bootloader)
What you should be more worried about is your warrenty/garentee , it is voided when you unlock your bootloader

I care more about the DRM keys, only because I assumed they added functionality that woudl be lost wtihout them, as they did in previous Sony devices.
Are you saying that, with the Z2, this is not the case and that the DRM keys don't matter at all?

Yes! To root your phone, first, you need to downgrade to rootable firmware which is jb 4.1.2, (there's so many rooting methods that works in that version) then after rooting you can backup ta partition. Search for the procedures and read carefully and follow the instructions, it's all here in xda forum

Hey mate. Z2 can't be downgraded to 4.1.2 as box open firmware is kitkat ...... Aren't you confusing it with Xperia Z or something like that? It is Z2 forum.... not for other. And 4.4 is still rootable no need to downgrade. It just requires you to unlock bootloader.
Sorry! You're right. I just check out. My mistake.

Bootloader unlock

Hey,
I know there are surely many threads about the bootloader but I never had a Sony so I want to now is: I don't lose any features if I unlock my bootloader right? I know I can backup the Trimm Area so I can get the DRM Keys back if I lose them. In a thread I saw that bootloader unlocking even does not erease the DRM Keys on a Z2, is this right? I just want to know if I lose features by unlocking the bootloader and if I keep the DRM Keys on a Z2.
Thanks

Unlocking your bootloader formats the TA partition where your drm keys are kept
You can backup your TA partition and unlock your bootloader
Restore your TA on a STOCK kernel to un-void your warrenty
Restoring your TA will relock your bootloader hence only restore on a stock kernel
You can install a stock kernel by using flashtool >www.flashtool.net< to flash a FTF> there is a thread at the top of the general section
So if I unlock my z2 bootloader I won't lose any feature like X-reality or break the camera Like Z1?
