[Q] which tab's & cell will have best # of custom rom/dev options for my budget - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What's up everyone @ xda... first of all i am new here.. my name is Ericka, wanted to say thanks for having me here & allowing me to post!
Ok so the reason for my post... i am looking to purchase a tablet & a new cellphone this week. I love to 'tinker' with things... always have, started with computers (windows) and got decent at developing windows desktop applications in visual studio, learned basic php, web design etc. Now i want to get a basic understanding of the inner-workings of tablets/cellphones running android... eventually start developing apps to go along with my websites i build online (social network type stuff) & eventually im hoping to actually get into custom rom development/feature hacks etc way down the line...if i end up having a knack for it
Alright...main question....if you had a fairly small budget (see paragraph below) and wanted to purchase both a tablet & a cellphone... for the sole purpose of "messing with them"... testing out lot's of different rom's.. figuring out how they work internally... testing out your own custom apps (i dont play mobile games at all...so dont factor that in the specs), and ill be using the tablet to login my pc from work with teamviewer etc. With all that said...which ones would you buy? Obviously I guess i am looking for the tablets and phones that have the most amount of "options" available.. easiest to take apart, find things, hack etc. as in (software/function wise). And preferrably the ones that have the most amount of "actual people/developers" working on them..involved with them... aka "fans of the phones/tablets". You know the ones that have active communities of people i can interact with... along my journey of non-desktop disovery...aka... figuring out this mobile/tablet/wifi/cellphone/android thaang
Oh ya, my budget...super weak... i can't spend more than like $200 or less per-device... i do have a cell contract with verizon (my samsung stratosphere just died, also it had 'hella-limited' dev support) so i might be able to 'upgrade' to a more expensive cellphone possibly....but the tablet i am probably going to have to pay for out-of-pocket. Hopefully my budget won't leave me out of the game entirely...i know that all the 'new devices' i see out there are like 500+ minimum.. Anyways I work 2 jobs.. no fam to help...im just trying to work with what i got. So thats why i signed up here first thing....I figured if i had any hope of being pointed in the right direction, it would probably happen here.. seems like a lot of intelligence combined into one lil place @ xda
#ericka #geek #lyfe
p.s. thanks for taking the time to read my post..im not gr8 at putting my thoughts into keyboards..sorry if it's confusing.. only like my 2nd forum post ever!

I was reading an article the other night @ work about the 'best developer phones/tabs' and it mentioned the nexus series of devices. There are just so many different models/types...wifi/3g/4g, wifi only, different cpu speeds, ram sizes etc. It's all very confusing to a mobile/tablet device #noob. When i research android stuff..every article gives a different opinion leading to yet another article.. all of which just seem to be advertisements for selling apps/new cellphones.. almost nothing seems to be 'user-generated' just people with agenda's. I can't afford to make a mistake and end up with a tab/cell that's anything other than "perfect" for me.. i only save enough $ for new hardware like once every 3 years...so i am just really trying hard and putting this time/effort into making sure i talk to people like you who really know what's up.
Anyways thanks for that suggestion! I just feel stupid...cuz im so good with windows/desktop computers...i got it "down"...i mean just built a #killa #box running a i7-3770k, liquid cooled, ssd's with raptor backups..16gb of DDR3, a R.A.T. mouse for precise graphic design, logitech backlit led flat keyboard.. smoothly running on my own custom windows 7 build/all non-essential services removed..all wrapped up in a stormtrooper looking stryker box. Visual studio and my own apps/services run like water flowing down from a waterfall...i just have like an instinct almost for desktop stuff. When it comes to this mobile/tab stuff.. its like im 15 again learning windows xp..starting over.. but i will figure it out...hopefully with a lil help from you guys!

Nothing can beat nexus devices, nothing comes close..
U can develop apps on anything but custom Roms , huge Dev support, it is nexus. abt various models , they are 3g / 4g, 16gb/ 32etc, now u choose the one that fits our need, these are not different models u see, everything else is same
If budget is less u can go for used nexus or older model

How easy is it to 'custom yourself' into some sense of anonymity with mobile devices. I.E. when the app your using says it gets full access to your phone #, contacts, txts/sms info etc. ...2 Change your gps location, show them a faux cellphone #..i.e. 1-800-ITS-NOT-1984, give them a list of "Grandmas Famous Cookies #1 " through #15 as your entire contact list. I know making myself have some semblance of privacy in the world of "google play" will be the very first things im going to sort out/figure out. Things like that (privacy apps etc.) are what fueled the interests of an entire generation windows developers ya know? If 10 years ago someone said that webpages would get access to your full name, phone #, all of your emails...access to your harddrive......it would have been the death of the internet/pc as we know it. Somehow people just decided recently that any time-killing game is worth handing their family history/life over for. IMO it's kinda pathetic... so those things are first on my list!

with a rooted nexus u control which app has control to what

I would suggest you to buy a Nexus 7 2012 as a tablet as it's much much cheaper nowadays when the new version of Nexus 7 was released, but if you have a higher budget than that I would gladly suggest you to purchase the Nexus 7 2013 version.
For phone, I would also suggest a Nexus device, maybe the Nexus 4 as it has dropped alot in price due to the release of Nexus 5 but it's still a great and rapid device which runs very smooth and is really well optimized.
All of those devices are made for development in mind, and there is a huge variety of custom roms for those devices.
I hope that my advices helps you to chose a device which you will like!

I went to t-mobile yesterday afternoon after posting this..... first of all they are offering to pay off my contract @ verizon. Then they have the new Nexus 7 tablet (with the snapdragon 1500) & nexus 5 phones. After detailing the plan for (both) to me... it looks like $16/mo for each device per month (assuming my credit is good enough).
Overall $100 a month for unlimited service + the 2 devices... (assuming i paid for the mobile hotspot option) which im guessing i won't need since I'm going to root the nexus 5 and use something like opengarden etc. So without the mobile hotspot option [data] it might be about $80/mo total...does that seem like a good way to go...or should i really just look into purchasing the Nexus 7 (2012) and Nexus 4 in cash?
Either way I'm glad i looked into this...my current bill monthly at verzion is $102...for 405 anytime minutes on a crappy samsung stratosphere, which is literally incapable of running instagram for more than 20 minutes...it got lagged out/and heated up to about 120 degrees, and started dropping it's 4g connection in that time 20min time frame.

That seem's like a good way to go, actually I would suggest you to go that way as those phones and tablets are wayy better than the ones I suggested you. But they are bit more expensive, that's the only downpart which I can find.
So I would suggest you to grab that deal

Thanks for the suggestions everyone...I ended up taking your advice.
Went today & picked up my nexus 5.... the nexus 7 (2013) wasn't "in-stock"...supposedly I'll have it in 4-6 days though.
Omg..the difference between my old stratosphere & this nex-5 are like...1990's nintendo to 2013 PS4. In for quite a shock though when I went to install instagram/twitter, took a detailed look at the "rights" I would be giving up...laughed my butt off..then clicked each one to read each part in its entirety.. I can't believe people are willing to grant app's access which would essentially make their "tiny computer" with 3-6ghz of processing power & 10mbps average connection become 100% remote controllable by an app developer!! The only applications made for windows that gather this much information + can turn on your webcam without notification + can intercept your raw communications + create raw sockets (and run custom network protocols)...would be black market trojan's which are encrypting their data with custom protocols...the types used by script kiddies you read about in google tech news. I'm sure you guys are all used to this by now...but you can just imagine my lil geeky jaw dropping when I realized the full scope of the corporate information grab taking place right now in the mobile market. It's like my geek ex-boyfriend once told me..."If it's possible and not technically illegal.. you better believe every company that matters is already doing it"
So my first step will be figuring out how to get a custom rom on this phone... selectively choose what information/or b.s. information I'll be providing any app's I pick to take a look at. Any suggestions on where to get started? I would really love to learn mobile technology (android o.s.) from the ground up...the same way i learned how to use a p.c... in such a way that i have the "most" amount of control of my system as possible

ok got it rooted....now how do i go about modifying what apps see (not blocking, but providing b.s. info)
p.s. the captchas on this site are ridiculous.... most spammers hire humans to type in captchas now....so all its doing is making our life harder, its not stopping anyone from spamming forums

Yes it can... i did some research on it. I'm lucky enough to have gotten Android 4.4 KitKat (KRT16M) so App Ops is enabled on my phone. Thank god I didn't upgrade to the latest 4.4.2 etc. Because apparently in that operating system... App Ops is no longer enabled.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'm on my way to learning all this great/cool stuff!

What to do

Hey all, first off I just wanna say this is a great site and great community. You guys have been my number one destination when I need something for my phone and never disappoint. So thanks to any devs and anyone else who reads this!
Now, moving on, I purchased my GS2 back in November after having the 3 previous iPhone's before (opted for the GS2 instead of the 4s). And everything had been going pretty good up to this point and I was loving my phone. That was until I received an iPad for a graduation gift... and now I've come to a bit of a fork in the road. I returned the iPad at first because I had always told myself that if the day would ever come I would get a Samsung/Android tablet.
But I've been comparing the 2 a lot and have spent time on my phone and my friend's iPhone and iPad and I can't help but notice how much smoother the games are on iOS, not to mention the far far superior selection of apps. I spend a lot of time playing games on my phone and my GS2 often seems boring because of the poor selection. I remember my iPhone having a lot more people playing games online than I see on Android. I also feel like I've wasted a lot of time flashing new roms on my galaxy. I'm a hardcore diagnosed flashaholic and in a way I think it might be nice to have something that just works (iOS).
TBH, I've always hated Apple, everything about them, but right or wrong they've stolen a lot of good ideas from Android such as the notification bar that was once one of my biggest complaints about iOS. And they now have the chrome browser which I hear may be getting Flash NEXT when it comes out? As far as I can tell the only thing their missing is Flash.
IMHO: I hate how iOS gets the attention and the good stuff because that's what everyone and their mother is buying these days. I've always liked Android more but iOS gets so much more support.
The other thing I like about iOS is the great syncing between iPhone and iPad. I want my phone and tablet to play together nicely. Notes, reminders, apps, everything. Whereas if I get an Android tablet (looking at ASUS Pad 700 when it comes out July 16) I would have to use something like evernote and gtasks and a separate app to sync between devices if that will even work. I also don't like the limited number of tablet specific apps on the Play Store. But Android is no doubt gaining momentum, just look at 9 million GS3 preorders.
Sorry for the massive wall of text I'm just trying to sort out what I've gathered so far and get some opinions on it. So what do you guys think? For a phone/tablet combo which is better, iOS or Android?
Thanks for spending the time to read this if you did and I appreciate and input you guys can provide. I assume I'll get more Android answers but maybe there will be something I'm not seeing or haven't thought about before.
TLDR; iOS or Android for phone/tablet combo?
obviously this forum will fill with "GO ANDROID"
so i am going to buck that and say "GO IOS"
its obvious thats the direction you are leaning, based on the complaints

OP....I understand your point about how everything in ios just works right out of the box while we go crazy here trying to find that one ROM and kernel which we will be happy with but we never find one. We might settle for one for some time but then we need regular updates to keep us satisfied.
Having said that there are somethings which are easier with android....at least for me. Eg.
-File management is much more intuitive.
-Music management is awesome...no need to go thru the uber irritating iTunes. I can just copy folders of mp3 and can play whole folders Instead of albums
-Easy to sideload apps which allow you to do something extra like download YouTube videos.
-Also prefer the larger screens.
-Like the option of external memory.
- and a few other things I can't remember
On this forum you will only get iPhone sucks remarks. I personally like iPhone and ios but buy android to satisfy my above listed requirements which ios does not provide or does not provide well.
My 2 cents.

**** Apple. bad location for this.
I'd pick android, and I'd get the Nexus 7.
I'm no apple alfan boy nor am I an android fan boy. I like something that looks good works good and does what I want.
I had the iPhone 3 3gs 4. I loved the 4 by far it was just a sleek design IMO, I jail broke it to have more functionality and more open source management. I got an upgrade and I though apple 4s? Why pay extra for a few upgrades? Now mind you my iPhone 4 was never touched by human hands after I bought it. I had it cased screen protected the works I take VERY good care of my phones so it wasn't like it was all scratched so a 4s was justified.
So I stepped into android I've heard about it seen it on TV l read about it on the web. So I saw the gs2 and wanted it so I got it. Stock rom dissapointed so in a couple hours of owning the phone I had flashed roms apps the works it was soooooooo much easier then jail breaking. The cons I found was the 70$ a month warrenty while apple would replace anything I brought a jail broken iPhone in for a faulty battery and they replaced the whole phone.
I love both but both have cons why not use Google for notes and such?

I've had the first iphone and ditched it for an HTC back in the day which had 3G GPS and whatnot while the iphone was lacking about everything. I'm talking iOS 1... anyhow now I've own a lot of devices, have been able to play with a few tablets phones and whatnot. At the end it is hard to decide which pill you should take because there are good things in both products and you can't have all, I found the best combination for me was having an iPad2-3G and my current handset (Galaxy S3 ATM) which is the one I take everywhere. I've had the Motorola Xoom, and trust me I wouldn't touch an android tablet EVER. There is too much redundancy having the same OS on a tablet and your device, you can do exactly the same there is minimal to none difference between running a tablet or a handset with android. thats why I got an iPad I can have "quality software" if you want to call it that way and have my freedom/rom flashing/geek tinkering with android. And the iPad2's are pretty cheap these days

HAHAHAHAHA..bugger!!!
I switched to android, just after a jam with friends where all were just talking about how wonderful android is, as I was always a BB and iOS fanboy b4 that instance... and I too found my experiences with this enchanting and quite amazing..
After using the this SGS2 which I got from a friend moving on to some better one, I have used it in stock condition for about a month to get full gist of what android experience is all about..
now I'm also into flashing business and have already flashed my first custom rom (shostock) and kernel(NEAK) with modem (UCKH7) and really having a great time with this.. no issues whatsoever !!!
I'm so entralled by android that I have also started learrning about creating android apps (previously tried my hand on iOS app dev too) and nips n tricks of modding a kernel/rom to get the desired experience.. maybe with a little more time, I may also start making my own stuffss !!!

In all honesty and having used both myself, it sounds like you would be happier with the IOS. I personally switched from IOS to android and like it MUCH better but it's not for everyone. The IOS does work well but not near as customizable as android, but is more user friendly.
Thanks for all the replies guys!! If I do ever switch over too the iPhone I certainly will miss this forum. On a side note, is it just me or do 3 out of 4 people in the xda iPhone forums not speak English? Are iPhone users really that young? lol. But really thanks for all the help, I appreciate it.

Thanks for this idea. Thought about it shortly after posting this and wondered if I should have put a "Neither" option in the poll (not that it would have changed much by the look of it lol). It would make sense since iPad gets apps specifically made for it while Android tablets kinda get left out.

Like others have said iPhones typically have very good battery. Even with all my flashing of custom roms, kernels, and modems I have yet to reach the same quality of battery life than I had on my iPhone 4.
Thanks again guys, this decision seems to becoming harder the more I think about it lol

Rooted Android or Iphone with Cidia which has more customization?

I love android and all the custom things you can do to really make it your own but I've also had an iPhone with cidia and TBH there are over 100s of thousands of different things to choose from in cydia. So I guess I just want to here from the people who have had both.

I have had an ipod touch with cydia if that counts from what I've seen, there are android roms which offer way more.

Cydia is garbage.

Disclaimer: I haven't used iPhone since iOS 4, but there are things I can do stock on Android that I couldn't do jailbroken on iOS. Once rooted, there's no contest. Even when jailbroken, the restrictions in iOS are a factor, and make things like custom launchers and keyboards a pipe dream, at least if you want to do them easily. There's just so much restriction inherent in the OS that even jailbreaking can't get around.
It's a very pretty walled garden, but Apple won't let me plant my petunias, and they get huffy when I try to move the lilies to the other side.
Android
Not even close...Android by a mile. I feel like my jailbroken ipad2 is only slightly more configurable than stock android lol, let alone a fully rooted and rommed device. keyboard options alone put android way ahead.

Android by far. Even a bone stock non rooted android is better than a jail broken iphone.

Yeah straight up android is waaaayyyy more open source. I just switched from having an iPhone for two years (before that I was strictly android) and sure iOS is super user friendly but super closed, Don't even think about ROMs for iPhone they don't exist that I know of.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
Yeah I tbink the closest ios gets to roms is the themes. Atleast thats all I know of it. The only experience I have with ios is ios4 on an iphone and then my second gen ipod touch. (Which is pretty useless because all the decent apps "need" ios 5 or better)

I remember jailbreaking my iPhone 4. I was impressed when I could put icons wherever I wanted... Still couldn't get a custom keyboard though. But at the time, Android was still really bad, so the iPhone was better, but nowadays Android beats the iPhone in every way possible.

Oh look! On a stock non rooted Android device, I can install and run a third party launcher! Gee, can LolPhone do that? Yes, to jailbreak.
Oh hey! Different transition animations? Nova Launcher fixes that. Want that for JitterBugPhone? Yeah, if you jail break it, which requires loops and hoops to do.
Last one. Dude! Overclock and tweak different display/color settings? Can EyePhone do that? Maybe overclock, but that requires millions of steps and complicated procedures which are risky to accomplish.
Good luck on jailbreaking because bugs are apparant and patches keep you hanging.
What a joke of a phone.

Most people with "i"Devices jailbreak to do the things that Android users can do stock.....

I agree. I also have a jailbroken ipad 2 and it's not even close to a stock android device.
I had an iPhone 5 and jailbroke it... (big deal for someone who had Android since the G1 days and was in there from the early days of rooting)
Android is more customizable and tweak friendly by far.
75% or more of the good tweaks and customizations that everyone raves about for iPhone jailbreak... cost money... not "please donate" but you must "pay to play"... and many are not cheap, $5-10 often times. And its still not as customizable as Android, still can't do some things Android can...
All while it seems Apple is getting better at stopping jailbreaking.
Now as a device... The iPhone 5 was very competent. It functioned well, if not a little boring and uninspired. Its size is about perfect. Actually the iPhone could gain a little size and still be fully one hand friendly. Which is why I gave it a try... the note 2 was just too big for me to use as a phone/communications device. (as a media device it worked great)
I used the iPhone for 3 months and it worked well, and for the most part did what I needed a smartphone to do. (Google maps and other Google apps in the appstore really helped... plus Google's effort to allow syncing of its services with iOS) It eventually just blended in and became a tool/device to serve a need... it was never a toy as it were. Not like Android, with the ability to switch ROMs and any myriad of other tweaks, allowing for much tinkering.
The big issue for me was that it was boring and had small things that just didn't work how I wanted or simply couldn't do. Switching to Apple's services over Google's would have helped a little, but not enough. Little things like how notifications were handled, and the home screen, just bothered me.
It did have good battery life, for a 1500mAh battery, much more energy efficient than any Android device I have used. Apple's control over most notifications causing most info coming in to the phone, to work on a push basis helped.
I could get 2 days use on a single charge comfortably, as I do not use the phone constantly, and use it only when needed, send sporadic messages during the day (50-100) a couple quick phone calls, or to alleviate a little boredom on work breaks, maybe a little GPS nav... and by the end of the second day 20% battery left was normal.
The screen did drain the battery pretty quick and hard use did as well. About 5 hours of constant screen on and heavy CPU/GPU use was what you could expect. (like when playing some graphically intense games)
It served its function as a smartphone well... but like I said... it was boring and had a few annoyances. My fiance hated hers, and we decided to switch back to the note 2... and to embrace bluetooth and voice control when possible. Maybe that will help with the size complaints.
Hope that helps answer your question.

Glad it helped.
I would get an iPhone for my mother... or for someone who wants the convenience of a smartphone but without the technical prowess needed for Android... or someone who simply wants something easy to use overall but a little more functionality than a simple phone.
I was a pretty loyal iPhone 4 user--I got it 2 weeks after it launched on Verizon and have had it until January when I got the Note 2.
It really is no comparison, Android has more customization options--almost even right out of the box. Most of the things I had on my iPhone were just tweaks/macro for tasks that I did regularly...
edit:
I should probably add that the Note 2 isn't my first android device and I actually came from a Blackberry Curve to an iPhone. Palm OS, WinMo, iOS, Android are all in my "Tried It" list
I've ran both, and tbh stock android is better than jb ios. The custom launchers and non-root tethering apps its amazing

Buying a Sony Tablet S finally!!!

Hello everyone!
I finally saved enough to buy a tablet and after about a week of reading reviews and watching feature videos, I made up my mind to go for the Sony Tablet S (3G +WiFi) (Model:SGPT113IN). This is my first foray into the android world. I wouldn't root it immediately. I need to get a little bit familiar with all the slang and technical terms used around here. I can see though, that a senior member, Condi,is doing a great job. My hats off to him.
True this tablet is not the best. There never will be the best tablet! Not even the so called great iPad and Samsung families don't deserve that title. There is always something lacking, something too low, some features too less....but given all the facilities in this neat tablet like:
SD Card - fine with me...doesn't bother me.
USB Host - a plus point for me!
WiFi - Can't live without it Don't need to be a 100Mbps or something more....highest achievable speed for our OFC is 2 Mbps.
Bluetooth - Won't be using much except for sending few jpeg files rarely) 3G (yay!)
The Design - Cool and stands out a lot in the mad world of tablets. Btw, I am really fed up of all the similar and boring plain looking tablets out there
GPS - I don't exactly know whether it is an AGPS (Assisted GPS) which needs 3G data or the real GPS hardware (not needing data connectivity)
The Size - 9.4' (1280 x 800) is somewhere in the sweet spot for me. Not too big...not too small.
The IR Blaster - the scale tipper in my decision making.
The Sound - Stereo (yay!) if you are thinking the sound is too low....let me say that it is for my personal use...don't intend to use it in parties
The Battery - Long charging time and short Battery life doesn't bother me as I am not living inside a cave. Not traveling much either.
Memory, Processor & Multitasking Performance - Suits me fine...I am not expecting it to perform like a workstation or a Core i7 CPU machine. I will use it mainly for social apps, light browsing, listening to audiobooks/music on my way to and from my office. A little bit of games/entertainment/educational app my wife and my daughter can play/use during weekends.
These are just from my point of view...my two cents...hope i have not offended any samsung/apple fan. Leave comments and share your thoughts please!!

Yeah...I have thought about it too.
But the price is about more than double...
Rs. 19,990 for Sony Tablet S and Rs. 46,990 for Xperia Tab Z
That was too much for me...
I wouldnt recommend the STS to anyone. Or the XTS, you can get much better tablets for teh same money atm.

The Sony Tablet S is a nice tablet. I own four of them, one of them owned since the first week the tablet was released to market and I have had no hardware or software problems with any of them. One of them I use at work in an industrial environment and two of them are used by my 2 and 4 year-old granddaughters, so I am sure you can imagine the abuse these tablets receive. All of them are running Android 4.0.3r5a rooted, which has proven to be a fairly stable and trouble-free release of Android. I do not foresee Sony releasing anymore firmware updates for the STS, but then again, my tablets perform well and do what they were specified to do, so are any updates really necessary? No, not in my opinion. So, if you know what the STS can and cannot do, and you feel it will meet your needs, then I say buy it.
I also own a Sony Xperia Tablet Z. The XTZ display-wise and performance-wise is a better tablet than the STS; however, hardware-wise it fails in comparison with the STS when it comes to port access and ruggedness. The XTZ is a dainty tablet, the STS is a manly tablet.

Hi Cat McGowan!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts....It means a lot with all the hype going on that this STS is costly and have no future since it will not support newer android versions.
You have made me really stand steadfast and want to own it all the more!
I have two laptops, a PC (all Core i7 processors)....if i needed any horse-powered work done, I have those.
The STS will just be a take-a-break device while lazying on the couch or bed with a movie or two and some light entertainments/games or when I am commuting.
I must admire you for owning 4 STSs!!!!!

Yeah...you are right.
But as I have said, the upgrading (to JB) is not an issue with me. I believe it gives me all I want plus something which is rare on other devices - the IR Blaster feature. Maybe Samsung has got it in the new devices but they costs too much.
For me, though it may be an average device with average component/hardware with average performance with no future support/update/upgrade, it has all that I need in one neat package.
Thanks for your concern though....cheers!!!

Anyway, I would gladly go up to $620 USD provided it has 3G + WiFi + Infrared + expandable memory (SD or MicroSD)

I was leaning more toward the Galaxy Note 10.1 GT-8000 though.
Yeah, the cpu for the new Tab 3 is Atom, the first among tablets to have this.
But the Note 10.1 is not so old and i've heard only great comments and reviews from xda here.
Let me refresh my mind for a few days and make the final decision.

Yeah it can be a bit difficult deciding between 2 good devices.
It is either the Atom processor or the S-Pen.
The S-Pen seems pretty awesome but in the same time the Atom processor will give it a ultimate boost in performance.

You know what...these companies just toy with us.
You will not find any device with all the good/best features.
They will add a particular feature to one model/device only, and another new feature to a different model/device.
Everyone would be happy if they put all their eggs in one basket!!
Do not get the Tablet S it will put you off Android tablets for life.
Get a Nexus 7 instead - Old or New. 4.3. on the old N7 really flies.

Indeed. Mine's starting to feel slow, but otherwise still alright.. One thing I found that using a Swapsd script I found somewhere really helped make it suck less. lmao
My wife got her 769 just a little wet, and it decided to stop working (the water damage indicator is still white), and nothing I did seemed to help it, so she got her a Samsung Galaxy Light. I decided to move to the Nexus 5, but I'm using my old L9 as a rain sound machine for when we sleep at night.
L9 uses ti omap 4430. As TI abandoned mobile soc market, our device is left unsupported. Still, I don't have idea why there's no cm11 builds for it, many omap devices like kindle fire got those.
I'm still here. I bought this device months ago because it was an inexpensive and sweet middle tier device. I bought the Metro version and unlocked bootloader, installed Bobz CM11 originally then put the device on ATT unlimited 4g. I'm still working on a secure CM11 firmware for it and I plan to make video guides for it also. I'm working on porting Ubuntu Touch to this also I'm just having trouble getting the thing to make calls. I work on a number of projects like this and I'm doing development for XBMC on the XBOX still.
Here soon probably a few weeks my ROM should be RC and I will release it.
I'm too cheap to give up and buy a new phone.
I have a encrypted locked bootloader that i'm still trying to unlock. I ordered some 910k resistors and micro usb heads, but they ship from China so i have to wait.
If I ever get it unlocked, I can write a comprehensive tutorial on how to do it.
Same, no money to upgrade and no reason as well, with CM 11 phone is running relatively smooth and works for my needs.
Yep. Same here. I have money but I like to get the most out of things. This phone is a great choice as long as you can unlock bootloader and install CM11. It's the perfect size and what I really like about it is the fact it's made in Korea. I boycott anything from China, India, Bangladesh and 3rd worlds. I enjoy having high quality stuff from 1st worlds on the cheap. For instance, I have a pair of boots hand made in England and from materials gathered in England that I paid $200 for and suffice to say these great high quality boots will look nice and last at least 10 years. It's getting harder to find stuff like that now adays. All of my clothes are hand made in 1st worlds like England, Canada, Sweden, Italy, etc. What's funny about that too is when I'm out and about I often get complements about my stuff from people that are far wealthier than I am, not saying I'm wealthy though, and when I sometimes talk to people about all this dogsh!t from China etc these "rich" people look at the tags on their clothes and see they are wearing something made in china/india/bangladesh/wherever and then they get pissed off about it and I just have to laugh at them because I paid a fraction of the price for a legitimate high quality 1st world thing while they paid for overpriced crap that will fall apart in weeks.
Same principal goes for these phones. They will drop support for it to force you to upgrade so they can keep getting money from ya. Thing is a lot of these phones have great hardware in them and the hardware will be ahead of the softwares hardware requirements for years. That's why I love CM because through it my 2 year old device is still ahead of the "cutting edge" crap they release and it will be for a few more years all for $75 lmao!
On another note: CM is so private and secure compared to other Firmwares stock or modified. And just about any electronics coming from China are going to be backdoored so they can steal all of your personal information and sell it to the highest bidder. We can't always stop those chinks from selling their crap here in the US but we can be an informed consumer and a smart shopper so we can force their low tier companies into either going bankrupt or force them into stop making crappy stuff so they can no longer rip off hard working class Americans.
I love doing stuff like this. My home theater is better than a $10,000+ home theater and I only paid $150 for the parts.

I sure as hell wouldn't. If you're talking about the klipse headphones there are guides out there where you can build better ones yourself for $15 or modify others and they come out better all the way around. If you're talking about a home theater well friend FOSS is always going to be better. I have a 4k projector I built + HD sony receiver 7.1 and a HTPC I built with XBMC on it that I control all from my cell phone all for $150 with FOSS and hardware mod guides. All I do now is download all my 1080p/4k movies and tv shows and games for free all off this P769 wirelessly tethered. That's why I say FOSS for life baby!!!!

Will the Honor 5x support Kali Linux for building a Pentesting device?

Hello, I'm current going to school for CNST (computer network support technician) and I couldn't help but notice how cool Linux can be, I'm very new to it all yes- but I'm looking forward to starting this project as a form of furthering my personal education because I'd like to specialize in network security later down the line.
There's a TV show called Mr. Robot and I saw him use a Nexus 5 to make this "Pwn Phone" however I also found an article in XDA dating back to 2014 about making such a device using what's called NetHunter (Kali). But the Nexus 5 is pretty expensive anywhere I look for something new. Yes- I can buy it used but I don't trust it enough- I'd like for it to be a fresh new phone where the battery hasn't been drained & filled, the ports exposed to dust, screen to scratches, dents, etc. In other words- I'd like a device that I know from that moment on anything that will happen to it will be by my own doing.
That being said, I've been looking for phones in the 200'ish price range, it'll go with a MicroSDcard + USB OTG & Wifi dongle so I would like to not surpass the $320 budget I've allotted for this project.
The Honor 5x fits the bill in specs, price, etc for me, however- the great question is, is is compatible? Will I be able to flash Kali Linux onto it as one would with a Nexus 5 or OnePlus One?
doubt it https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-nethunter/nethunter-3-0-released/ huawei has slow development but someone might be able to port it

I've read tat article but I have a few concerns. The issue appears to be that the original poster claims it has "worked" for someone else but has not tried it for himself. Therefore, I have no idea if it currently works still or if there's still support for this project/device combination :/
