Gameklip, Case, and PS3 controller: A good combination! - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hey all, I've finally gotten all teh stuff together for my alternative to the Moga Controller stuff, and I conclude it's not bad at all.
So, here's the equipment of choice:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EKLW8XM/
The case is a cheap, hard case that's decently stable and has all ports available. It's the only case I found that actually has all the ports open, so that's good. While technically you can use whatever case is your fancy, I recommend a hard case, and you're going to need a cheap one because it's going to have no purpose other than this.
(I ordered some flimsy Silicon Cases prior to this, but realized when I held them that they wouldn't work for my purposes).
http://www.amazon.com/GameKlip-VM-004018-Gameklip--Universal-Casemount/dp/B00AS22BYS/
The Gameklip of course. Unfortunetly the main site that sells these is currently (Or was a few days ago) out of the universals, so if you want to use this you're going to have to do this route. It's decently stable and I find it's sticking power is good enough on the above case; However, if you find it to be inadequate, you can feel free to glue the thing if you want; Like I said, the case should only be attached to the klip, so it doesn't matter.
http://www.amazon.com/GameKlip-VM-004018-Gameklip--Universal-Casemount/dp/B00AS22BYS/
A Dualshock, of course. If you have a PS3, you can use one of those controllers, but just keep in mind that you'll have to do some fumbling in order to bring it back and forth.
Issues with the set up:
The set up is a little hard to get situated correctly due to there being little guiding instructions, so you can end up a little lopsided if you're not careful.
It feels slightly top heavy because of the phone. It's not so bad that it's unplayable, and after holding it for a bit I stopped noticing, but it's there.
Anywho, it's a good alternative to the MOGA or other controllers where they end up blocking the power button and volume keys; With this set up, the only thing stopping you from having all the ports is the case you want. It's also ideal because it's the only option that lets you use a Playstion controller, and, having come from both it and the 360, I prefer it.
HOWEVER, if you are interested in using a 360 controller, there is hope for you, though I haven't used it.
http://www.shapeways.com/model/1443...li=gmerchant&gclid=CNj0se74y7sCFRRefgodfAkAxA
Utor cases seem to be a better alternative if you want to use a real 360 controller and don't want to bother with a case. But, like I said, I prefer the PS3 controller for this, and I'm fairly certain the Xperia Skin has native support for it, so.

The Utor Case guy told me he should have the PS3 version ready soon..that is the one I am waiting for.
Just emailed him to see if he has any update on the ETA.

Not bad, not bad. The Utor (I keep mispelling it Ultor... Such a missed chance for a Saint's Row II reference!) cases look like good ways of working it, and their designs definitely leave all the ports open. I probably won't purchase one unless my gameklip breaks, but it's good that the Z Ultra is getting feasible alternatives.

Indeed! I was surprised when I saw it since it is not a common phone size..but it sure is a conversation starter
Between it and my watch I usually get some comment lol

Well the PS3 controller being made by sony its super easy to connect as the Xperia already has the built in app for it.
On mine I just press the power button on the controller and it is connected. I can see the power level remaining and turn it off from there too.
All it took to set it up was connecting a usb cable first and run the app, and it quickly says it is done.
Cant get easier than that.
Of course, you may still need sixaxis app for some stuff so depends on what you are playing.

what android games support the ps3 controller anyways??

Somethings just work, like even the Dreamcast emulator..guess you need to test and find out.

Got dualshock and it works like charm.really very easy to connect and till now all gamepad supported games run very well with it.only thing i am nt able to figure out is how to activate its rumble effect which dont seem to work in any game.

I have this set up too but sadly I find game support for the ps3 controller isn't great. Even games like reckless racing 2 that have controller support the ps3 controller doesn't work properly for. Anyone thinking about getting a controller I would suggest get the better supported moga.

PlayStation Controller with USB Adapter

Has anyone tried this? It would be cool if you could turn off the on-screen controls.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx_XvUEUoP4
Edit:
I wonder if you can plug in a USB keyboard. Haven't seen anyone try that yet. I need to get an adapter an try it out.
I do know that you can buy a Bluetooth keyboard to use with the tablet that you might be able to map buttons to and use.
Also I do believe there is an App floating around that will allow you to Bluetooth the PS3 controller (or the Wii Remote) to your device to use with games.

I think honeycomb supports most usb controllers including ps3 and 360, I cant try it until I get an adapter though. Like is said above there are apps that let u use dualshock 3 via bluetooth, but I think they require root access.
Yes, you can use USB keyboard and mice. The Dual Shock 3 controller doesn't work (ironic, yes?). There is an app to use the DS3 and it requires root.
- Lisa (the one who did the video referenced above).
The ps3 controller is closed in as when you connect it with a pc... btw you can remove the on screen controls in the options...
Also... Lisa, I truly enjoy your very indepth reviews and previews of products...it is always your reviews that manage to go deeper than any review site I visit (eg. The usb port on the S) Glad to see u really are in depth if your on this site! I bought my hp TM2 because of you! Same with this really great tablet! Thanks!

Unfortunately the PS3 controller doesn't work. Sony's proprietary bluetooth is at it again. As you all know, Sony never likes to play well with other companies...and in this case, not even with their own devices. I ordered the logitech controller and an OTG USB cable which I'll try out today. I figure it'll work nicely and bluetooth would be even better. We'll see...
I have tried with a proper sony pad and can confirm it wont work via bluetooth or usb. it`ll connect to a rooted device but as the tablet isnt rooted yet it wont work.
I`ve talked to staff in a couple of Sony centres and they have said they have been told by sony reps that it will work with the controller soon.

Any update on whether the logitech controller works or not?
It works with the USB Adapter. Played my PS Certified Games just fine! It works on other games as well, but its hit or miss.

Yes, I use it with my emulators and it works fine. The controller itself leaves a little to be desired but with the OTG cable I bought and the logitech controller's usb dongle, i can now game a bit better on my tablet. I also bought the dock so that I could have the screen vertical.
You can use a mouse and a keyboard with usb.
I have plugged in the official wired Xbox360 pad and it works! The only problem is that the buttons are all mapped differently for the playstation certified games and there is no way of re-mapping them. For stuff like emulators where you can re-map the buttons it works amazingly well.
Has anyone tried using the PS3 DS controller ever since the PS Store came out? Just curious if it included some kind of software patch to allow the PS3 controller to work since Sony has stated that soon we will be able to use the PS3 controller. I just don't want to waste the money on the logitech controller just for the tablet when I have like 4 PS controllers lying around.

I Just tried and it doesn't work, all it does is flash the 4 red leds on the pad and that's it.
I think we need the Tablet rooted to get one working via usb
Damn! I'm probably going to try this when I get home from work and I have time to try pairing this to my tablet and then getting a refund if it doesn't work, unless someone wants to try it first. It says it doesn't require root, but the reviews are a bit iffy:

I'm leaving work early today (3:30 Eastern Standard) - I'll try to fit it in before my evening class.
Ok so after purchasing, no dice. The pairing was successful, but the server app still needs root to even start. I had no problems purchasing it because a have a bunch of android phones I should be able to use itwith. But as of now, the app doesnt work for the Tablet S. Would love to see rootcoming down the pike for this thing though...
Thanks for the update. I figured with the so/so reviews there was probably going to be an issue with the tablet s.

[Q] PS3 or Xbox controller with Galaxy S3

Hey guys, I'm new here!
Just wondering if anyone has had much experience using their ps3 or xbox 360 controller with their device to play games? I've been looking into it but I haven't tried it yet. I think it would be great to be able to use them for things like emulators because for example SNES emulators are a bit dodgy to play with touch controls.
I know there's a sixaxis controller app to connect your ps3 controller and I heard that you can use a micro USB to female usb 2.0 to use your wired xbox 360 controller. I also believe you can connect a wireless xbox 360 controller if you have a wireless adapter.
Any thoughts on this?
Hi mate.
I have for the USB adapter for the S3 where you directly plug your controller into your device.it works great and is instantly rcognised! I use the ps3 controller since its more portable.only issue is that the wire and movements may cause the phone to fall when your playing games so you will have to have a good stand. Also for most games, I've used GBA, nes, psx, n64 emulators and GTA Vice city you have to configure the controller which is a pain at first.
I also have used the sixth axis Bluetooth feature which is great as well.just have to get the controller IDs off the PC and configure them to the phones Bluetooth.if you connect the controllers to another device like their consoles or Bluetooth to a PC, the connection to the phone has to be done again on the PC which can be annoying. But If you have the USB phone adapter you can configure it straight away and use it wirelessly.
Only problem I have with this is that gaming can make the phone heat up so its beat to keep the case ventilated and in a cool area to avoid over heating.
But it works very well!

Hey, thank you for the information I have ordered a USB adapter to test out the xbox 360 controller which seems like the easiest option. I might get some sort of stand as well then because I can imagine it becoming annoying.. which leads me to think that although the ps3 controller seems to need a bit more messing around with, I like the idea of a wireless controller.
I was wondering about the over heating possibility although I've only really noticed the handset getting pretty hot whilst playing vice city.
Cannot wait to test this out!
Yep, as mentioned a USB On The Go cable works great with the S3. PS3 controller works just fine.. I think I remember having trouble with the 360 controller. And the sixaxis app does works great too
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Oh great, thank you that's good to know my PS3 is at university so I'll try that when I get back there in a couple weeks. As for the USB cable for the xbox controller, I didn't realise I needed an OTG cable (a normal one didn't work today haha) luckily they're cheap, it should arrive tomorrow
I use the sixaxis control app and my second ps3 controller.
You can wireless control your whole phone with your ps3 controller, like changing music and videos, scrolling trough the homescreen.
If you already have a second ps3 controller its pointless to buy a usb adapter since you can buy the app for one buck and have much more comfort.

That's because people don't care about the rules.
To use a ps3 controller via the cable it will work natively, to use the Xbox controller there is an app called USB BT joycenter which is available on the market.
There is also an app called sixaxis controller which will enable bluetooth for your phone and ps3 controller.
To play the games on your phone there is something called a Gameklip which is available in the accessories section of XDA in the sgs3 part.
I've bought one myself and it's really well made and works a charm.
If you are thinking of using two bluetooth pads and using the MHL cable to send the signal to a TV that is also possible but MHL on the S3 isn't great, the vast majority of people have an issue with the screen being set at a low refresh rate, or being stuck on 720p.
I myself have two LED 3D tvs, one LG which shows the picture in 1080p but at 30hz
And a panasonic viera which shows it in 1080i @ 60hz, the viera is much quicker and the input delay isn't as noticeable.
If you go down the bluetooth ps3 controller route then you will want to check out the themes and apps section to get profiles for the most popular games for the six axis app.
Hope this helps.

Yes it does.
As for the xbox controller, it is a bit too chunky to play games on your phone, not very portable and you also have to worry about that big cable dangling around all the time.
Also there is a kernel (perseus) which apparently has support for the xbox controller too.

I did not realise that android 4.2 makes it difficult to use Bluetooth devices. (I'm on cyanagenmod 10.1). Currently I am having trouble getting the Xbox 360 controller to work with emulators and any game for that matter using the USB BT joy center app. I'm following all the instructions and recommendations to a tee! Is this because I'm on 4.2? I know the OTG cable works because it recognises the controller in the app plus I can use a USB mouse with my device.
Also I never before considered using the Wii remote. I tried to pair mine but the problem was down to the fact I have 4.2 installed. Is there any way round this? I haven't found a solution so far. In don't really want to have to downgrade

I can vouch for the Gameklip with a PS3 controller. Works very well, and is remarkably similar to Nvidia's new Project Shield.
I use a wired connection to the S3 because it's simpler and also because I found sometimes SixAxis would get pushed out of memory and closed if I was playing a heavy game. Annoying if your controller stops working mid-game.

Yeah. I've found that Amazon can have some killer deals on some things you might be looking for, namely such.
the moga works well. i got one when they were giving them out for 5 bucks(just pay shipping). i use it from time to time. gets a little weird if you have it linked to a tablet and a phone like i have it for my nexus 7 and dna, but still works. you might just have to delink it and relink it to whichever you want to play at that time. definitely worth the money if you're big into console gaming on android.

Much appreciated for the info. I think I just might be sold on the moga, if it's still in stock by the time I can order it.
I own a Moga controller, use it for my Nexus 7. Pretty awesome gadget to have for mobile gaming!
the moga pro (if same price) might be better. looks way more awesome and probably feels really nice. unless you're going for portability... either one should be good.
I bought a Moga from Wal-Mart so that I could return it if I didn't like it... and I returned it. It irritated me that they went with proprietary support instead of as a general bluetooth gamepad. Most of what I wanted to use it with wouldn't work, and honestly the games that did support it seemed laggy. I'd let go of the thumbsticks and things would still keep moving. It's a shame, cuz it's a really slick controller, and that built-in clip is also awesome, but in the end it just didn't work for me. I also didn't care for the lack of a d-pad (yes, the pro has one, but I like the smaller form factor), and the buttons felt shallow and clicky and required too much pressure to use for my tastes.
I also tried the Nyko Playpad, and while I felt it was a better controller by having a d-pad and two more L/R buttons which were analog, I never got to actually use it because the damn thing didn't work at all on my DNA no matter what mode I used. My phone would "connect" to it, but the gamepad would still keep blinking at me as if it hadn't connected, and it never worked even for a moment.
Note to HTC: if you want to sell phones, stop needlessly f***ing them up. I love my phone, but I hate what they and Verizon have done to it... it'll probably be the first and last HTC phone I ever own, and that's a real shame.

I'm dying to get my emulation on with a gamepad, and without root and roms I can't use my previous go-to, my PS3 controller. Actually, has anyone tried a PS3 controller through USB? [Q] Best gaming controllers for Xperia Tablet Z

Hey everyone. I'm starting to get into more gaming on my mobile devices and now that I have an Xperia Tablet Z I'm getting even more into it because of the large screen.
I know the tablet has Dualshock 3 controller drivers built in and I've been able to try it. It worked easily and flawlessly which was great, but the problem is that I don't own any PS3 controllers. I've used an app that allows my to connect my Xbox One controller to the tablet which is awesome, but it needs to be plugged in the entire time and I can only connect one Xbox controller to the tablet at a time. I've realized that bluetooth is the way to go for having wireless gaming as well as multiple controllers connected.
So the question is: Will the PS3 controllers be my best bet to use specifically with the Xperia Tablet Z, or will I be better off saving some money on generic android bluetooth controllers? Or maybe even the generic versions of the PS3 controllers? I like being able to just turn the controller on and have it connect automatically without having to open any other apps and sync or go through settings to get it to work.
I'm a complete noob when it comes to bluetooth controllers on tablets so maybe any bluetooth controller can sync up with the tablet without issues and I just don't know that. Right now I'm leaning towards buying authentic PS3 controllers to guarantee that they will just connect when I turn them on, but if I can save a bunch of money and get the generic version of the Dualshock 3 controllers then I'll absolutely do that instead. I just don't want to buy those just to find out that they don't work.
Any help, even if you can just share your experience with controllers that you've used would be super helpful.
Thanks!
...Now that I think about it. We might as well start a list of controllers that work well and don't work well with the Xperia Tablet Z.
Controllers that work great:
Authentic Sony Dualshock 3 controller:
-Built in drivers.
-Fast setup.
-No need for OTG after initial setup.
-Can connect multiple controllers (at least 2 haven't tried more than that).
Generic SixAxis controllers (don't have rumble feature)
-Exactly the same as authentic Dualshock 3 controller except that there is no rumble feature.
-Costs significantly less.
Nyko Playpad Pro
-Just ordered this (got it for $14 on nomorerack.com).
-Will update this section once I have a chance to try it out.
I have a PS3 controller but mine is a different one.
Normally you have a DUALSHOCK, but I was informed that exist a model called only SIXAXIS, and this one is what I have.
I bought a refurbished one and works perfectly.
The main diferences between the two is that the DUALSHOK has a vibrator in each side and the SIXAXIS doesn´t.
In fact if you don´t mind about something vibrating on you hand, you should go for a SIXAXIS, is lighter, so will be more confortable to play for long periods
I don´t have it here with me right now but you can see the diference looking above of the charge/player LED, is written SIXAXIS, instead of DUALSHOCK.
Anyway, hope it help you decide :good:
Cheers
EDIT:
I forgot to say that is cheaper too, I payed around of $28 with tax.
Usually the DUALSHOCK is (at least in Canada) $54 - $60 without taxes

Thanks! I'll add that to the list. It sounds much better than paying full price for the dualshock. I'm assuming it connects the same way as the Dualshock? Just plug it in, turn the controller on, wait for it to connect, then unplug the controller?
How did you connect two dualshocks at once?

It took a bit to figure it out, but it's actually pretty simple.
-Start with both controllers off.
-Go to Settings>Xperia Connectivity>DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller>How to connect controller.
-Connect the first controller via USB. The controller should power on, bluetooth should turn enable itself on the tablet then the tablet will tell you that the controller is connected.
-Unplug the first controller and make sure it is still working (go to home screen and try selecting apps with the joystick).
-Go back to the "How to connect controller" section and plug in the second controller (make sure the 1st controller didn't turn off). The tablet should tell you that the controller is connected. You should be able to unplug that one and use both now.
You may not need to go into the "How to connect controller" menu to do this initial setup, but that's how I got it working. After this initial setup you should just be able to turn the controllers on and have them sync up to your tablet automatically (providing the tablet had bluetooth turned on). Let me know if you have any issues getting it to work.

You do the same way you do with the Dualshock.
Like I said it is original, except for the vibrators.
So yes! Way better than pay double of the price for something that shake in your hand.
Cheers

You probably would get a more relative answer by posting your question in the Sony Xperia Z3 forum.

Thanks, I will try it there, although it isn't restricted at Xperia Z3.
I also have the z3 and my question is with 2 dualshock 3 controllers does it work well with multiplayer in emulators? I want to be able to play Mario kart and goldeneye 2 player
You can use any bluetooth controller with just this simple app
Just install SixAxis Controller app from google playstore and you can connect bluetooth controller from it. But note that, to use this app your tablet must be rooted.
With the help of this app you can also map keys of your controller to your tablet.
I play modern combat 4 using custom mapped controllers using sixaxis controller app. You can also use your controller as a native controller and enjoy games in default keymapping.
This app will require you to connect your controller with OTG cable for initial setup and later on you can connect your controller via bluetooth.
You can find the app here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscontroller&hl=en
I'm a Tablet Z gamer myself. I use PS3 controller on my Xperia Tablet Z LTE. It works great. But for instance, some game like Modern Combat 4 have horrible default keymapping and SixAxis controller app is the best alternative for it..
But be assured that, Six axis controller app is a paid app so buy at your own risk. It's working for me very well, so it must work with most of the android devices.
You can read my experience on gaming with my tablet on this thread:

I hope you find this information helpful to you.

[Working] GameStop Red Samurai V2 Bluetooth Controller ($12.97)

Picked up a pair of these controllers from GameStop earlier this week. Only tried pairing one, but it works great! It has 2 modes, in one of them it acts just like the remote without the voice part.
http://m.gamestop.com/Catalog/Product/104425
I bought one today and it works perfectly. Tip: ensure the controller remains in the NP's line of sight during pairing. The first time it couldn't pair and the second time it paired but no buttons (in game mode) worked because of this.

I'm very picky about third party controllers and their directional pads.
This controller... is amazing!

One thing worth noting...
The controller pairs as two separate devices. If you pair it in "keyboard" mode, you must re-pair it in "gamepad" mode.
Just picked up two of these today based on reviews in this thread and after a few tests I can confirm that these things are amazing.
I was previously trying to use my Ouya controllers to play games here and there, but these $12 controllers are 100x better and most games and emulators I've tried so far "just work". They're actually comfortable to hold, buttons are responsive with good travel and I can operate the NP menu with them without any bizarre button config.

I agree. They feel so much smoother than allot of other controllers I have used. The Gamestop associate helping me recommended it. Glad I listened to him! The only real negative I have about this controller is that I wished it used micro USB to charge instead of the mini USB.
I hope this post can help those on a budget looking for a great gaming controller. Trying to give back to an awesome community that has helped me avoid many potentially bricked devices.
Just ordered mine from gamestop, it better be as good as you all say it is... Or else!
thanks for the heads up. i got two the other day ago and my girl got one for her kid. this is a steal. ive used several games as well as emulators and it works great.

Did you try to see if it works with 2 players simultaneous? I purchased a NykoPad Pro which works great and I want another to use for my MAME emulator. I read reviews (amazon) that users can pair a second controller but they can't seem to get the second Nyko Playpad to go into two player mode.
I hope the Red Samurai doesn't have his problem.
Finally arrived in the mail today and I LOVE the feel of it. Very comfortable to hold, maybe a little light, and aesthetically pleasing. Just need to figure out the easiest way to remap keys to work with emulators, and then I'll be golden!
Okay, trying to make this work with NostalgiaNES but they keys aren't mapped property, anyone have remapping recommendations?

a lot of games work with this thing. in theory any game that supports bluetooth controllers.
if you install lollirok and amazon appstore the list grows a whole lot.
gta3 works really great btw. kind of funny that it shows as incompatible with android tv.
ive tried a few emulators and know forsure that you can use two of these controllers at the same time.
Going to start testing out humble bundle games!
I bought two of these controllers and they work great on Mame4Droid. I had to map the inputs for both controllers.
How do you remap the inputs?

I went into settings and managed the inputs for each player.
You may need a mouse or you cam use the controller to access the settings.
What is your roadblock?

Thanks for the response.
Where is the "Settings" menu for the controller?
Sorry - at work and not in front of my TV....

No worries, I'll explain as much as I can. Looks like you will need a mouse or 3rd party app to access the menu when your in the app. I use my DroidMote app. I couldn't access the settings with the physical remote or the remote app.
Once you go to settings, select input.
Select external controller
Select define keys and manage each player
