Bootlooping... - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hello,
I was recently given a bootlooping Evo 4G Lte. I have been trying to figure out how to get this thing out of a bootloop and havent been able to do it. I, unfortunately, have no history on what happened to this device. Currently, it bootloops on the "Mean Bean" loading screen but will go no further. I can get into the bootloader, which says it is Unlocked, S-On, but I am unable to boot it into a recovery, it just returns back to bootloader. I have tried fastbooting twrp, but it fails (remote: image update error), and I have tried fastbooting the Mean Bean kernel thinking maybe thats all it needs, but that failed as well. Anybody have an insight? Much appreciated! Thanks.
Mike

I would run the 3.17 RUU. Hit the top link in my sig and look at the last post in the thread. You can run it from the bootloader. You'll need to re-root afterwards but it should get your phone back in working condition.

Thanks for the quick reply. I downloaded the RUU and ran it. However it sits and says "Waiting for bootloader" then errors out with "USB connection issue". The usb is working. The reason I never ran the RUU in teh first place was because i thought i read that you cant RUU with and unlocked bootloader. Is that not true? or is that my problem?
Mike

Not 100% sure but I will check with someone who used this tool recently and see if they were still unlocked at the time. Were you connected via Fastboot USB? Sounds more like a driver issue.

Yeah I was connected and it said fastboot USB. It said rebooting to bootloader and rebooted, still said fastboot USB. Then it sat at a screen that said "waiting for bootloader" and after a while error ed out.

You can try relocking. You just need to run the command "fastboot oem relock" from a command line while connected via fastboot USB mode.

I have since tried relocking to see if that was it, and it did the same thing.

Hopefully @YoFayce can shed some light on the matter since he recently used this on his phone.

you can use the stock RUU and you can leave the bootloader unlocked as it will not affect anything.. it will fix your looping problem (Amongst others) as in gps not working ect.. once your done you will need to fastboot over your TWRP and from there mod as normal Good Luck! and ill be watching if you need any help!

When in doubt update your android SDK remove the htc drivers reboot install drivers reboot and you should be good to go! Check the integrity of your USB cable and if possible use a rear USB port (More Power) Painful process yes but well worth it.. HTC drivers act strange till you reboot OOOh and make sure your using the proper HTC drivers for windows 32 bit or 64 bit!

The drivers seem to be ok, but I am still not able to get any further. The RUU finds my phone, then reboots again to bootloader, but it just sits there saying "Waiting for bootloader" until it errors out due to "USB Connection error". I have tried a few different cables, and different USB ports. Not sure what the problem is but it just wont go any further. I re-unlocked my bootloader with htcdev. I have tried fastbooting a recovery to the phone but it errors out. I just cant get anything to work so I can boot anything. I really just want to get something working...anything! Any other ideas? Thanks.

use an sd card put a recovery image on the root of the sd boot into bootloader apply the recovery you should then have a recovery if you did it right, go into twrp mount device add a rom flash in recovery viola.

Sinister,
Thanks for the reply. I put TWRP on the sdcard (named PJ75IMG, right?) and tried to apply that when I rebooted to recovery last night and it failed. It tries to load it but gives a few errors quick (No Image) Did I do it wrong?

Well, which recovery file should I be using? When I use the main TWRP ones (ie openrecovery-twrp-2.6.0.0-jewel.img) it gives me the errors like I said above. I now see they have a few labeled like this PJ75IMG-twrp-2.3.1.0-jewel.zip. When I use these, it tries to continue but says "Main Version Is Older. FAILED"

Fixed it!

I'm fairly embarrassed to even have put myself into this situation, mainly because I have no idea how I did it, and even less of one how to fix it.
My issue is this: I went ahead and unlocked the BL on the Rezound today, and then installed CWM Touch recovery (first). After that I went and installed CleanROM. Did the update in HBOOT like it told me to. No problem. After setting up the Rezound again, I loaded some music onto my memory card, and then noticed nothing showed up (media), so I decided to reset the phone. I used the power button to do so. So the phone rebooted.
Then it just sat on the HTC screen, which it now continues to do.
So what I have done is this:
Tried to reflash the ROM (no luck)
Tried using Amon Ra recovery instead (all I get is a black screen, but I know it is "working" because I hear my computer connect to it)
Tried flashing a different ROM (nothing)
Tried using the PH file from CleanROM to see if it would boot up (nope)
So now I'm stuck, and I have no idea what happened!
Can anyone help, or is this thing toast?
It's worth noting that the only recovery that seems to work is CWM (touch or not), Amon Ra won't display anything on the screen (both 3.14 and 3.13). Also that when it turns on the HTC comes up, then disappears and comes up again.
I have been searching and trying things for about two hours now, so at this point I'm ready to chuck it in the trash.
Edit, nevermind read that wrong, it isn't in a bootloop.
Try to flash the kernel from fastboot and see if that helps.

Yup, that's the only way I can get into recovery. It just tries to install it again and again if I don't.
My SD card has the CleanROM and the Stock Rooted Rom on it, nothing else.
Push the kernel through fastboot.

No dice. But I will try to install the ROM again, and then manually push the kernel rather than doing it on the phone.

The phone doesn't need to be booted fully to run the RUU? I was going to run the .exe one and it said it needed to be on.
I'll try that, nothing else has worked.
Sounds like you need to push the boot.img using fastboot. If you dont have fastboot and all that installed you can get it from CleanFLASH 1.0. You need to make sure you have the correct boot.img or it will continue to be stuck. Also flashing it through hboot sometimes just doesn't work. Thats why you need to push it via fastboot.
Clean flash HERE
Just put the attached boot.img into the cleanboot folder. Open a command prompt into that folder. Put the phone in hboot and fastboot USB run the following command in the command prompt: fastboot flash boot boot.img
Note you must have the HTC drivers installed for fastboot to work.

Hmmm, mine does not do that.
So maybe that is the problem. I'm gonna restart my computer, now that HTC Sync has installed. Are all HTC Drivers the same? I had Sync installed from when I had an Inspire 4G, but maybe the drivers for the Rezound are different.
This could be my problem.

messed up my phone; no roms :(

first off, I'm an idiot with this whole thing and shouldn't be doing it probably. i just don't know enough about it to be playing with expensive phones like this so i understand I deserve whatever i get.
i was running a custom rom on an S-ON phone. i forgot the name of the rom (was made by TEAM COOL or something). But I wanted to unroot and go back to normal stock ROM and download the JB update. First, in the SU app, I did a complete unroot. that did nothing except not let me use the app anymore.
then I tried doing the RUU way of going back, but when it would go to the loading bootloader portion, the usb would disconnect and it would fail with error 171.
so then, and i don't know how i got here, but i went into recovery and did a factory reset and now i have no rom. I have tried installing meanrom but it fails after some line regarding a kernal. my phone won't do anything except boot to the white HTC screen or into the bootloader.
i have no idea what to do, I just want it working at this point.
i've been searching forums like crazy but all the solutions are things I already have done or things that won't work for me.
If you haven't done so yet, you need to relock the bootloader before running ruu. Put your phone in fastboot and using SDK or ADB Tools, type fastboot oem lock

so i finally got a rom to install--clean rom. that is the one i used to have. but when i reboot, it gets stuck on a black screen and won't go any further.
I had the same thing happen. Had to run a boot.img flash utility i found on another thread elsewhere on xda. The flash utility was updated for jb. If i can locate where i found it then i will get back to you.

Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Sounds like you need to flash a Rom that has the s-on installer or fastboot flash the kernel for the Rom you have installed
Most roms come with the kernel installer built in now days. just keep trying to flash em. fyi if your phone turns on , even a little bit , you are not bricked
I am trying to flash meanbean. I wiped the cahes and did factory reset, then flashed the ROM. It's been on "Installing /system..." for about 30 minutes now. Something seems wrong. I'm scared to interrupt it in case that's normal or if interrupting it will break it for good.
Well, I think that might be because my twrp version is really old...2.1.8. I tried updating but had no luck.
Now nothing flashes. It gets to 'verifying partition sizes' then fails. Tried this on several roms that would previously flash, just not work.

lol how could he do that if he dont have any rom installed...dafuq?
You need to FASTBOOT install it:
Turn off your device. Turn on the device and keep holding volume down until a menu shows up. Select fastboot from the menu list. Plug the device into your computer. If you have the right drivers installed, your screen should now say FASTBOOT USB. Run the following command via the command line:
fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img

Perhaps what is happening when you try oem lock and get that error is that adb is still running from a prior attempt or because of some other program. Try opening your task manager and ending all processes of adb and other programs that connect to the phone. Then try oem locking again and go from there.

I made a little bit of progress!
I determined that Windows 8 was the reason I get the usb malfunctioning message. I obtained a Windows 7 computer and it worked like a charm.
That said, I'm not out of the woods yet.
I relocked the phone using fastboot and then have been attempting to flash a stock RUU now that the usb issue is sorted out.
That seems to work but it gets stuck at "sending....." for as long as 35 minutes. I've tried about 4 times, giving between 20-35 minutes and it won't go beyond sending.
I can at least fastboot now; but the phone is locked. Which is fine; I just want back to stock anyways.

[Q] What have i done? Can only get in bootloader...

Gonna be on the road and can't be 'experimenting'...attempted to go back to stock, by using the original RUU, and as I understood it, I needed to lock the phone back first. Didn't make sense as I was wondering how I could flash a Rom if it was locked back. After locking, when trying to go to recovery, it just comes back to fastboot. I can't get into the main phone--it boots to a screen, but no buttons work, although if i press volume up/down it shows it on the screen. What have I done?! I'll admit being a newb to phones, so please, some guru help me get back to something

I dunno, is there a way to do it from the bootloader? Cause I can't get to a place where I can push adp commands and I can't get to recovery...i've hosed this thing haven't I? I've got insurance, do I need to drop this thing in the sink and get another? And maybe not try rooting the next one...

Would you mind posting a link to your unlock method? The method I used the first time was using usb debugging and adp commands from windows. Can I unlock somehow from within the bootloader? Thank you very much for your help. Lol, my phone is ringing at this moment but i've got know way to answer it

Yes, I relocked from the bootloader, as I guess i misunderstood that I needed to do that before flashing the ruu...I was actually on one of the custom roms when I locked it

I CAN boot into the rom, but nothing is accessible...the phone rings if someone calls, beeps alerts for mail notification or txt, but no buttons work and screen is blank(except for wallpaper). I can see the icons connect to wifi and such, so it's working, I guess, sort of...

Upgraded HBOOT to 2.28 - Stuck on White Screen

Yesterday I upgraded my hboot to 2.28. Immediately afterwards, the phone would not get past the HTC white screen (I let it try for 45 minutes).
I can't get into recovery (flashes the HTC white screen, then goes to the green "circle arrows" for about 30 seconds, then to a red triangle with an exclamation mark).
In FASTBOOT, I don't get "fastboot USB" - I get "fastboot AC", and my computer can't see the device.
I'm at the end of my "know-how", and need someone to coach me through this.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks for the offer REV3NT3CH. At this point, I'd like to do the process myself and not send the phone off. I don't mind the hassle... just not sure what to try next.

DHChristensen- I've got just about the same problem. Mine occurred while trying to S-Off with Juopunutbear. I'm stuck on the Juopunutbear logo, no USB connectivity in Fastboot, and no recovery loaded.
Could you let me know where you found a PH98 image of Clockwork mod? I'm hoping I can load it from the HBOOT 2.28 that's currently on the phone.
Thanks in advance,

Thank you for the advice Rev3nt3ch, I don't get the QHSUB_DLOAD device, nothing at all when I connect the phone to the PC. I tried anyway on my Linux PC to run the fix you suggested, it never finds the phone connected.
I went through all the other fixes suggested by the unlimited.io people over a chat session with them, no joy.
So, it looks like I am bricked. All I can do is boot to the HBOOT menu, or let the phone boot up normally, which takes me to the Juopunutbear logo.
Again my thanks for the advice,

if you can still get to hboot you are not bricked...just a soft brick and this can be fixed...try the above posted method...if not you can mail the phone to me and ill fix it for you
I did a little research, Juopunutbear replaces your boot image temporarily, you need to put it back to fix your phone. What rom where you using when you attempted s-off? You need to make a PH98IMG.zip with the kernel (boot.img) from it. It's pretty easy, just need 7zip to update the zip image with the boot.img you were using. If you can't get the phone to communicate with a PC, you will need a card reader though to get the file on your SD Card.
Your other option is to keep trying controlbear and the wire trick til it takes.

Thank you kindly for the research. I was just running the stock ROM. I've tried restoring the boot.img from a downloaded copy, it appears to load, but doesn't change anything.
Juopunutbear does save the image from the initial attempt in a file calle boot_backup.img. I've renamed it and tried flashing, same thing.
I think my biggest mistake was that I did not load a recovery prior to running Juopunutbear. I just unlocked the device, then went to do the S-Off procedure.

Start with S-OFF. After that, you just run the RUU from HTC (like you would've done to upgrade to 4.3).
after that thats all i do?

Your storage is likely corrupt. You can format it with your PC but this will delete everything from your storage. All you need to do is download the SuperSU zip to your phone and flash it in recovery, then you'll be rooted. You'll also need to install the SuperSU app from the Play store if it's not included in whatever ROM you flash. Once you've done this you can start the S-off process.

if i format it is everything going to be okay? and how do i download it like to my sd card?

If you have any important files on your internal storage copy them to your PC. You can download the SuperSU zip afterwards and use your computer or a file manager to move it to your SD card if you'd like but it won't matter where you put it, it's just personal preference.

Well, i was in the process of rooting my phone and it got deleted like it got totally swipped, so i tried flashing a rom called viper4g and while it was succesfully installing, and it did, it took me to the htc screen and after that it was blank like black screen. so i hard reset and i got into bootloader, i pressed recovery and it doesnt let me go in. my phone is seriously bricked. i can access fast boot commands but i cant access recovery. i tried re flashing it and it still doesnt do any good! can you help with this?

I would suggest running the RUU again. Connect your phone and PC via Fastboot USB mode. Once you've done this, double-click the RUU to start the installer. Since you're S-on you may have to relock your bootloader first.

I even tried re locking it and it still didn't do any good!

I didn't try that, I'm a noob about these things, I'm sorry, when I get the ruu, what do I do? Do I just install it directly from my computer? Or use the fastboot commands?
