Looking for Phablet! What do u think? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hello guys,
I just wanted to know how your Xperia Z Ultra is!
I've been a Xperia P, Z user for about a year now, but now I'm looking forward for some Phablets!
I own a IPad 4 but it is too heavy to carry or to read something! So I planned to buy a Phablet!
Please let me know your true experience with your Z Ultra,
Please write battery life, performance, gaming and everything u feel bout it!
Also if you can compare with other Phablets then how many ratings out of 10 will u give?
Try with these :-
Samsung Galaxy Mega
HTC One Max
IPad Mini with Retina
Thank you.

Also if you have any other Phablets you know then please write it down!
I'm looking for 6' and more inch Phablet, not 5 so don't suggest Xperia Z1 lol!

Battery life is pretty good I use mine quite abit throughout day. Performance is good. Can get annoying with widget redraws but not enough to annoy me that much. Gaming is good I play fifa. Gta. And fm2014. All run great. I do like the design. I don't like sound quality but then again its waterproof which makes that a problem. Camera is poor as no flash. Ideally I would love the htc one max. As having a HTC one and this XZU. I would rather sell up just for a HTC one max.
Sent from my C6833 using Tapatalk

Well if you want the biggest phablet the ultra is king. But don't count on the camera. It's ok to take ok pictures. Men I love my ultra! I don't care for the camera or flash. Big screen and power love it.....

the Z Ultra is something for you, if:
-you have a big Pocket
-looking for a Phablet that has nearly the graphical and CPU power of an PS3 (just 15% of graphical power behind it)
-like big screens
-want to use nearly everything for the Touchscreen
-you already killed a Phone whith water
the Z Ultra isnt something for you, if:
-u need more than 11GB for Apps (than buy an Galaxy note 3 instead)
-you want to shoot Photos whith it
-your Pocket is too small
-you want to change the battery
and if the battery live isnt enugh you also can upgrade to 6050mAh whith an CP12, when this isnt enugh look for a cable which should direct you to a Desktop PC, thats using your Battery Live to run Battlefield 4 on Ultra graphics .

Thanks alot guys! Appreciate it!
Your suggestions mean alot to me
Ok u guys say camera is a bit dull but it's Ok as I just need for reading purpose!
Btw r there any special specific books for this device?
Coz I don't like the ones present in play store!
And what do u think should I go for it? Or u think Sony will release any other Phablet soon?
I saw Xperia T2 ultra but it's specs aren't as good as Z Ultra and I love Sony phones look so I don't feel like going for samsung!
HTC One Max is pretty good so let me hear some reviews from u guys!
Again thanks.

Ok thanks, I will see and try this device before I buy!
Btw why there is so huge difference between HTC One Max nd Z Ultra Cost?
As far as I know Z Ultra offers more space but HTC One Max seems to be more costlier!

and if you mean the weight its just 250g much better than your Tablet.

the Max has also poor Hardware, ZU scores 35000 while Max is around 10000 or lesser in Antutu Benchmark (dunno the score of Max but its way lesser than ZU)

Or use Folder Mount and move the game data to an external SD card
So the Ultra is a fantastic choice if you can handle the size.
I came from a Note 2 so I was already used to big phones but this is a league above that still.
It fits in your pockets if you need to, just dont look too awesome but for me I normally carry my phones any way and have a Pouch Case in case I need it for any reason as well.
As for performance, I love the Stock 4.3 Sony Roms. It is the best stock Rom I have ever tried on any phone. I just used some apps to modify things and remove ones I didnt care for to make it my own custom rom in a way.
Games run fantastic unless it is something horrible coded for Snapdragon. Emulators are super smooth as well.
The display quality is very detailed and aside from not having super deep blacks like Amoled, I prefer the quality of it.
The only drawbacks to me personally, are the battery not being replaceable and the lack of a flash (for flashlight purposes not for camera usage).
The camera is not the greatest but it can do a decent job if you shoot manually adjusting ISO.
Sound is not super clear but as mentioned, it is water proof so there is a tradeoff there of course.
The phone just feels AMAZING to hold specially naked (the phone not you!).
The small apps are also very nice to use the display for multi tasking and you can create them from your app widgets which is also nice.
Reading PDFs on it is very good at least to my eyes.
Good luck!

Never had issues with overheating with it and the self touch issues from that I have read seems to have been fixed with latest ROM updates. Mine never had that issue but I upgraded right after I got it.
Not so sure about cold issues, I live in Utah so during the worst part of the winter we got about -14F and never noticed anything wrong with it although I didnt actively stayed outside to get frozen for too long so not sure

I personally love Readmill. It's cross-platform, so you can get it on iOS too, and it also syncs between devices (i.e start reading on your iPad and resume on your [insert device]). It's a nice app if you have epubs etc. stored locally (on SD card/internal memory), but it doesn't have a large in-app store if that's your thing.
Regarding the One Max, meh. It's big and all, but it's hardly a phablet. It's more like a big phone and it's exactly like the One, but bigger. No special features or anything. The Ultra on the other hand is a phablet with a big P. The UI is properly sized for its screen size, while the Max' UI is just blown up. Again, it's a large phone.
I'm having some "issues" with my Ultra though. You've probably read my post about the screen acting up when it's cold outside. It doesn't affect its usability though, but it just looks weird for a minute. I haven't read about anyone else having this issue, so i'm assuming it's a production error from Sony's side.
Battery life is pretty good. I didn't expect anything amazing since it's so thin, but i got properly surprised. Here's a screenshot from yesterday. I watched tv shows all day, watched a movie (Bad Grandpa), browsed, read some news (with Press) messed with some camera modules and so on. That's how long the screen was on, not the device itself. Not bad for a 6.4mm thick device with a full HD display. It'll last even longer if you're big on reading ebooks. It tends to only drop about 1% from i go to bed to i wake up (8 hours) with Stamina enabled (cuts apps' data connection while in standby, unless you whitelist some apps).
Camera? Don't go to a Victoria's Secret party expecting amazing photos and memories. They'll probably end up looking like manatees. Fine, it's not that bad, but there's a lot of noise in them, so it's absolutely not the go-to camera if it's a little dark, or even dim. It performs okay in daylight though.
Screen? It's really good. You're not used to AMOLEDs(?) since you're coming from an iPad, so it doesn't have the deep blacks, but the colors are much much better and more true to life. I don't think you'll have any complaints.
Audio? It's not a boomblaster, but it does its job (for me at least). Most people tend to forget that the built-in equalizer has an option called "xLOUD" and it'll boost the speaker volume. It's really loud (for me) when xLOUD is enabled, and i have never ever pushed the volume to max.
Software? I like it. It's stable and fairly lightweight (compared to TouchWiz and whatever that 10 year old designed for LG) and very fast. It has "Small apps" which are small floating apps, that floats on top of whatever you're doing. Writing an email and want to check the curling score (go Norway!), hit the multitasking button and hit the "small browser", and BOOM! A tiny browser window opens up on top of your email, and you're free to read about Canada's loss without leaving the email app.
Yes, i'm the guy who only want to share or say one short thing, but goes way beyond that and writes a novel. I wanted to mention Readmill, and look at this.. it's the work of a madman (@shaolin95 totally knows what i'm talking about). Sorry!

I have a ZU and love it!!! I came from a note 2 and was gonna go for a note 3 but the ZU is just plain sexy and is a beast.
Im also in Canada so the waterproofing also works in snow (Ive dropped a few cells in snow banks and such)
Its a killer device, great on the eyes and is perfect for some one like me who gave up there cell and 7in tablet for this.

[Q] To Buy or not to Buy (X10 responsiveness))

Hi, i know that for some of you buying an X10 right now is kind of pointless because there are a lot of available new phones but at the moment it's the only decent android device (1Ghz CPU) my carrier (Movistar Uruguay (movistar.com.uy)) is offering and is actually the best phone any carrier here is bringing. Buying an Unlocked one is out of question because of the insanely high prices (Galaxy S U$S ~1500) and no one i know is going to the US any time soon. So i can get the X10 in Movistar here at the same price of the X10 unlocked in the US (still pretty expensive).
Enough of background, i had the chance to try the Desire (U$S 1200! (tic.com.uy/HTC/)) and i found it to be snappier and more responsive than the X10. I mean, the Desire experience was what i expected but the X10 let me somewhat disappointed. Specially when sliding through the home screens and list scrolling. I can compare the Desire with the iPhone 3GS but the X10 seems it's below that. Even in Youtube videos.
Has anyone experienced that too? I know it was running Donut but nonetheless it felt like my firend's nokia 5230 or even the Samsung Star (which i think is also s5230). Heck, even the X8 running donut felt snappier. Maybe I'll go give it another try but this is kind of the only thing stopping me now with pinch n zoom around the corner and custom Froyo eventually available.
Sorry if i made it too long but i want to get my bang from my bucks. Hopefully while i make up my mind some other devices are going to be available, but now all the attention is in the iPhone 4 and RIM over here. Not so much on android.
Thanks for reading.
I liked X10 work pretty well but I have to say 384mb of ram may not be enough for play
I really bad thing is flash does not work
go for galaxy S i9000
Thanks for the quick reply but did you read what i said? 1500 US dollars for the galaxy. I mean, I tried it. it's great, gorgeous, but to my pocket it's not U$S 1000 better.
What i want to know is about the lag when panning and scrolling, because is practically the same hardware as the desire but the response in the desire is perfect.
Which games aren't suited for 384mb? is there a lot of difference? I don't plan to do hardcore gaming either. just some angry birds or something like that. I just want to get a good android experience like syncing, browsing, video, music, some drawing, etc.

If you wanna a solid long lasting device - buy X10. If you wanna play around with tech and change gadgets as fast as they appear at the market and go fashionable - don't buy X10. Simple.
SE is a kind of Rolls Royce here.
I want a solid lasting device but that kind of things are ceasing to exist, that's why i'm aiming to a high end right now which will be considered mid range in a year or too.
I like SE, my first phone was a K310 and only changed it when i got my G705(now flashed to W715).
But again, what i really want to know is if anyone here was able to use the X10 and compared it to a similar specs phone (Desire, N1, SGS, Milestone) and found the X10 considerably slower/laggier than the others, if it's something which was fixed in 2.1 or not at all.
I repeat: I want to get it, but want to be sure, but don't want to be disappointed.

As i said in the first post, i'm bound to what my carrier offers and right now the only high-end android it's the xperia. The smartphone market here it's very small at the moment, it's growing and the carriers are noticing it. But it's very much about iPhone, RIM and some Nokias (n95, 5230).
Is it possible for any Mod to change the thread name?
[Q] Is X10 laggier than similars? (Planing to buy)
Thanks
Try to read this post ^_^
I don't have and haven't tried other phone you mention but my X10i is very responsive and can accommodate all my need. I play Angry birds, and even Pocket Legend. ^^
If you wait until after christmas, I can buy a new x10 or captivate/i9000m for you and ship it to you for under $600 (unlocked). Even with duties and whatnot, you should still come out paying a lot less!
I say AFTER Christmas because I don't feel like lining up at the post office
The I9000m is the model with a front facing camera (2cams) and FM radio built-in (the captivate doesn't have either of those), but the captivate is the better option for you. It is a bit more sturdy, isn't known to have a large failure rate for internal memory like the i9000m, and there are ROMs coming out the whazzuu for it Also this phone is silky smooth when cycling through backgrounds, meanwhile the x10 is limited to 32fps until somebody does something about it.
The X10 is the better option if you want an even more solid device, MUCH BETTER GPS (much much better), a notification LED, and camera LED and an overall better camera.
People did some tests in which showed the galaxy S camera is better in many types of light but if you fiddle with the manual settings, the X10 camera is considerably better!

Thank you, can't wait to give it another try tomorrow at the store and with a lot of hope it performs right.
Have you seen any performance improvement since 1.6 or by removing SE apps?
I know i'm being too nitpicky but i can't stand even a half second lag when scrolling and swyping. I watched all the videos in yt and gsmarena and in 1.6 they always touch, stop and then slowly move the fingers like they have to wait for the phone to keep up, and even then the thing they're moving stays behind the finger... in 2.1 gets better but it's still not like desire.
That said i'd probably get it next week if nothing else is offered in the next few days.
Thank you again to all.

Of course there are performance improvement ( except Blurry in Call Pics T__T ). And improve even more if you applied optimizer like Jit for example. You could find the FAQ from my signature. ^^

Even Swiss bank doesn't give any guarantees. Forget it. Take what you like more. And don't stick to specs - they says nothing. I used to post it in another thread, but it fits here too:
"I have maybe a little politically incorrect point of view on the cell phone (and other technical stuff) design. It is about the culture. Not about "don't littering", but about engineering. Ericsson (and Sony Ericsson) has pretty long history that gave them experience. HTC, Samsung, etc are relatively young and most of their problems are rooted there. Look - overall satisfaction for X10 without the last technology bells and whistles like OLED or multitouch is higher, than hi-tech-packed rival's devices. Why? Because according to the experience, they realize, that it is impossible to be perfect and it is better to concentrate to ergonomics issues. The device should be easy-to-use, foolproof and hard-to-break. That can be understood through the long experience of analyzing how it works through the life of the device. Typical life of Samsung is around a year. My friend changes around 5 or 6 phones (3 or 4 of them were Samsungs), when I used the same SE k790a. And it works fine for now. Another conclusion is to buy a flagship. Budget devices of any manufacturer always have issues. I know, all those galaxies are claimed to be top-models, flagships, bla-bla-bla. But I bet, some months of using reminds you my note about engineering experience."

It is globalization here, dude. You can buy anything you want at ebay, for example. And price won't be $1200 or something like this. If you want something you like, you should pay for that. My carrier is T-Mobile US and over years it has never had any phones I'd like to have, particularly no one SE flagship. So I bought them somewhere else. You are lucky - your carrier has X10, so take it. iPhone, as any Apple's creation, is traditionally overpriced and underdeveloped. RIM is too corporate-conservative, but has pretty good niche there. Nokia is done technologically until they wake up and forget their stoneaged Symbian, but they are budget-market monsters, you don't want them. And you forgot Motorola. From time to time they launch amazingly good devices.

I'm talking about the price I can get it unlocked here, in Uruguay, where phones, pcs, cameras and tvs cost 2x the MSRP in the US, not the ebay or amazon price. It's very different the way in wich prices drop, in the US the prices stay at the MSRP for maybe 2 months and then they get great cuts. Here, if today the GalaxyS costs $1200 then one year from now it may keep at 1000. Oh, i love customs taxes!
Good thing is that if i buy it now i can sell it in a year for about the same price i'm getting it today.
*sigh!* Enough of third world depressing stories.

Oops, I forgot about miracles of third, fourth and other worlds... It is so easy to accustom to good things and forget other realities... I know what you mean - my friends from Russia always ask me to buy something for them if they plan to go to the US. They are able to avoid taxes, when bring things with them. Post service in Russia is a complete disaster. If death could be delivered by mail, people would never die in Russia - it would be delivered after world's end or just stolen.
And bribes are always lower, than taxes. I bet you know that.
A great cosmic joke:
Went to my local Movistar decided to give the X10 another try.
Me: Hello, I'm interested in renewing my contract and i would like to see the X10 please. (in spanish and less formal of course)
Movistar Employee: no can do sir there's no stock until Jan 1st.
Me: oh cr%#p!
About the Post Service
Actually the post service here it's not bad at all, I receive books and blurays from amazon in about a week. But books, magazines, cds, dvds and blurays have no tax but everything else over $100 has $150 of tax + ~50% of the cost. So for buying something at $101 in the US I have to pay roughly $300. It's great!
I usually get my electronics in the US when someone close travels but no one is going to for a while.
What really matters
We're going off-topic here. plain and simple:
1- Is the X10 touchscreen as laggy as in YT videos or is there a way to fix it?(custom ROMs with Jit seen on YT are also affected)
2- Is it only on the home and unlock screen or also applications suffer from this? Someone said that fast games were unbearable because of the slow response.
3- Is it normal that when typing fast the device skips some tappings?
Pleeeease, I really like the X10 but i'll be stuck with it for 1-2 years and $500 will be stripped from my pocket. I know the overall experience is great but I need to have instant feedbak of what i'm doing. I'd hate to treat a supposed to be high end phone with capacitive screen like a low end one with resistive screen: press, then sloooowly move the finger to where you want, then when the object is where you want, (sure?) then release. Sense UI can do it, even in lower specs phones and even the other SE X8 and X10 mini do better.
Alright, flame me if i'm being an a$$ but i reaaally want to get an android phone and start playing with custom ROMs and be a contributing part to the community. I'll do it but someone pleeease honestly answer this questions first. The faster you answer, the faster i'll decide.
Thank you all

It reminds me old good Soviet time of total deficit: If you see something good, grab it first, then think if you need it.
Try Movistar's office somewhere in the middle of nowhere. I mean in low income areas - they still can have some expensive gadgets at shelves. Come on, I remember those tricks, but you use them in everyday life, like a gift for the salesman or just palms oiling.

I have a good news for you - buy your lovely X10 in parts that cheaper, than $100 and assemble them home. You'll proudly can have a sticker on it - "Hand made". It is a little complicated and risky, but you can ask your seller to claim that this device is out of order, for parts and cost less, than $100. And, of course, with two separate transactions.

Never experienced this, but once the touchscreen overreacted at any touch and made some crazy things. I turned the phone off and after reboot it never happen again. Some lags can be in browser, but I think, it is not because of touchscreen, but partially downloaded pages. Same problem can be in YT videos since they are real time streams.

I mentioned already overreaction - just before it went completely crazy, there was double and tripple typing errors. I tapped once, but it produced two or three taps - letters or backspaces. It was once and it doesn't look like regular specifically X10 problem. Out of extreems - maybe I type slow at the phone, but it works fine for me.
I tried my friend's LG enV Touch VX11000 - I hate it - requires hard press and pretty laggy. I had iPhone - it works almost the same for me as X10 - fast reaction of touchscreen and interface both.

As you mention, every member of Xperia family works different, so I assume, that those differences are from the actual set of running programs and services. If you are going to play with custom ROMs, you always can modify your phone for faster work or for fancier view. I think, the X10 is the best hardware guinea pig for those purposes especially after the bootloader cracking.

Yes I experience it sometime when I haven't release my first finger but already press another key on the keyboard. But I think it will resolve when MT driver come to Rachael. ^_^

There's no lag for me at all. But I use Startup Auditor and Advance Task killer when I first boot or reboot my X10. It's too fast that sometimes when I am slow to type, it will type two of the same letter before i can lift my finger on the keys...
My X10 doesn't lagg, it's fast. With and without JIT.
But with the snow live wallaper it laggs sometime on the homescreen, maybe because of Launcher Pro Plus...
But owners of the Desire posted the same I think.

[Q] Thinking of getting a gtab but!!!!!!

Been thinking of getting a tablet so went into Currys today to have a look. love the screen on the GTab but found it was very laggy swipping through home screens? compared it to the Xoom next to it and that was smooth as silk?
I even reset the GTab to see if that would help but no change and if i put a live wallpaper on it got even worse? i tried all 3 they had on display and all the same, i did notice though they all had touchwiz installed?
I really like the GTab but was put off by this experience, can someone tell me if this is normal?

Looking at Touchwiz update reviews on Youtube, it seems extremely laggy compared to my Xoom. Strangely all say it's really smooth after the Touchwiz update. I don't know, either they have never used a Xoom (Android 3.2) or I'm just seeing things.
But i couldn't resist and ordered the GT10.1 anyway, i guess i will find out soon enough...
I've had both the Xoom and the Tab.
Probably less than .0001% of my time is spent swipping through screens. A HUGE percentage of my time is spent holding the tablet. The reason I took the XOOM back is because my left hand ached (I'm right handed) at the end of the day holding the Xoom. It's heavy, deceptively heavy.
At the end of the day my left hand doesn't ache with the Tab.
Simple rule of thumb: Determine what you will do with the device most of your day and evaluate how it performs on that. Don't use fluff as a decision criteria.
With the latest update (TouchWiz) I have 0 lag. They need to get those display models updated to give potential buyers a REAL look at the current speed. I love my tab!!
Don't forget that, in a lot of videos, there are a bunch of widgets on every homescreen. That slows things down a lot. Moreover, with something like apps organizer, you really only need one homescreen. Lastly, the touchwiz update does help a lot - especially if you do the + button then go to the more tab thing.

With the OTA excess widgets removed, and non-live wallpapers in-use seems pretty smooth for me.

I was hoping that this is why it seems to be lagging so much.
I dont know about the xoom but having recently shifted from the asus transformer, i can tell you that the samsung tab lags in comparison. No offense intended but I personally find that even the stock rom i had with asus performed better than the finest custom roms over here ( even with fresh install with no apps installed). This is because both the xoom and tf are using very light and stock roms while samsung added a lot of bloatware with the touchwiz. Also i tend to believe the white theme adopted in touchwizz literally slows down the whole experience.
HOWEVER, inspite of tht, i do believe that the samsung tab is a premium quality device and outweighs the other tabs because of its weight and size.
Xoom: fast but very heavy
TF: fast but a bit heavy and too wide for a tablet. ( you cannot even type at ease using swift key)
Bear in mind that this is something that you ll be holding your hand for hours maybe.... So in the end size and weight might matter more than speed depending what you intend to do with it

thanks for the replies they all help, was just a little put off by the fact that 3 demo machines were really laggy and stuttery.
TabGuy your right, i would hardly ever swipe between screens in normal use but its just the fact that that before you buy something you try it out and if something doesnt seem to be how you expect a premium device to work then that puts dought in your mind.
Its alot of money for me (as i am sure it is for others too) to be spending out on a device and i just want to make sure i get the right tab

My tf died yesterday but i popped into currys tiday and got a white one having used the tf from day one i can say i much prefer the tab and havent noticed any lag at all yet. I had the tf on prime rom and oc kernel and it was great also but the tab for me wins out however as not to be flamed the tf is also a good unit esp if u want the dock sdcard etc

think im gonna go for it, was going for the Xoom as currys have reduced the price to under £400 if you buy online but the GTab was calling my name lol.
wanted the SD card option really but have read about the new Seagate Go Flex satalite HDD which will solve all storage space problems which opens the door to the GTab

Chinese Tablets - Worth a Punt?

All,
Been looking on amazon recently and noticed some pretty decent spec tablets for very little money. Thinking of buying one.
The one im interested in is a NATPC tablet and has:
-Allwinner A10 CPU (A8 Architecture) @ 1.2ghz
-1gb RAM (says DDR3?!?!)
-Mali 400 GPU (same as Galaxy S2 i believe??)
-8GB Storage
-Capacative 7" screen @1024x600 res
-SD Card slot for expansion
-Full size HDMI Out port
-Only 9.8mm thick
-Running ICS
For Under £90, got to be worth it hasnt it? i mean it sounds like a pretty decent spec!
What are peoples experiences on here with these types of tablets?
Ive read reviews online but wanted to know what more techy people think of these tabs.

Might be alright, I mean the biggest issue is little to no support and build quality tends to be very different from unit to unit, If i was you I would hold out for the nexus 7.

You know what, ive just played with one at work. all i can say Damn that thing is impressive!!!!!!!!
The screen is amazing! I watched Transformers Dark of the moon and skipped to the fight scenes, my god, every little detail can be seen.
Amazing bit of kit. Nice heavy feel to it aswell, u can tell its quality!
Theres not much UI diffs in JB and ICS.
One thing i found strange though, it does have a front camera but u cant use it for pics. U can only use it in video calls.
Either way, one amazing bit of kit, defo going to get one soon!
But for the moment, i might just pick up this chinese thing to mess about with! lol

Fair enough, so long as your ready for a device which will not be at all like the nexus 7
I have had quite a few people buy them and then ask me why they are so slow etc etc but who knows this one might be good who knows.
But yes im pining after a nexus 7 dam being a student
Hey man, Quick update.
Well i took the plunge, seen as though it was so cheap.
All i can say is im very very impressed, dont know what people complain about. This thing is great!
The screen is 1024 x 600 res so pretty good (considering most of the tablets in this range are 800x400), its responsive and clear.
Yes there are moments when there is a little lag but no where near what i was expecting. Ive put a few games on it (angry birds, temple run, drag racing to name a few) and they all run smooth. Browsing the net is slick. I cant believe how good it is for the price.
It has a nice weight to it (feels like its a quality product) and the textured back makes it less slippy in ur hands.
I would highly recommend these tabs to anyone looking for an entry level tablet, but it has to be at least 1024x600 cos the 800x400 is just crap compared to this (a friend has one).
I have HDMI output (HDMI to mini-HDMI lead has to be purchased seperately though)
I tried the USB to micro lead (supplied with it) and plugged in a 32gb usb stick with a few movies on. It played them perfectly, was surprised by the quality, its great!
Seriously, anybody thinking of avoiding chinese tablets, think again. For the price, the "Natpc HD RTB Ultimate" is well well well worth it.
Im very happy with mine! lol

Nexus 7 vs HTC Flyer

How much faster is Nexus 7 compare to HTC Flyer for real world usage.
I've been using Flyer for about a year now and it's seem to be very slow to me, especially when surfing websites.
Can Nexus handle flash better with Quad cores and all?
I want to know if it worth giving away my Flyer and buy Nexus 7. If it's not too much different, then I'll just keep the flyer.
I've had both and TBH with my Flyer being overclocked to 1.84 GHZ I can notice no difference between the two in smoothness when browsing, tweeting, reading..etc
That said though, JB and quad core does make a difference ofcourse, especially when games are concerned.

I don't know about the Nexus 7, but for your Flyer, you may want to try the Puffin Browser off of the Android Market/Google Play before you buy another tablet. It sped my web surfing up tremendously. The company suggests trying the free version of the app first.
Also, u may want to search Nexus 7 + flash. I've read that it doesn't natively support flash (not certain), but hopefully that's nothing that a downloaded app can't fix.
I have great browsing with Boat browser.
Trust me its a huge speed difference. You guys saying its barely noticeable are just lieing to yourselves. Its like comparing choppiness to butter. Yea there similar alright. Cmon now.
Aside from speed the flyer has a full 7 inch screen in complete use (gingerbread only) and a nice pen function going for it.
yeah gotta agree with you. nexus 7 is faster. That feeling when I use my brother's Nexus7 and then i go back using my flyer ><

Im in the EXACT situation haha
Flyer good...Nexus incredible!
I've had my Flyer for over a year and have been fighting rom issues since then, it is workable (except GPS...Shame on you HTC for not fixing this!). Side by side -I've had my Nexus for 3 days now, the nexus screen is brighter, better contrast- whites now look slightly yellowed on the Flyer. Nexus speed is much better(expected), BT, GPS, & WiFi all operate flawlessly. I am using a usb adaptor cable from Amazon ($2.00)! to further expand storage and also connects to other devices for file transfer and viewing.Battery life on the Flyer was a solid 4.5 hours with constant video loop running- I expect 2/3 to twice the run time with the Nexus. I have a rooted-32g Nexus...couldn't be happier at this point!
Final note- I side loaded Flash and it works well with Firefox Beta.:fingers-crossed: Update:Boat browser is very fast and stable, I usually have to reboot my Flyer a couple of times a day due to lag or sometimes freezing...not so with the Nexus.
The two aren't even comparable. The N7 blows the flyer/view4g away in every aspect. I have the Veiw4g and the N7, and I don't even use the view anymore. It's so slow and crappy, it's not even worth it. If you are thinking about getting the N7, just do it. The flyer is dated now, and it's not going to get any fast no matter what you do.
Oh, and as far as media consumption goes, the N7 can actually handle everything I throw at it. I can't even watch my vulkano in anything more than low res on the view. But the N7 I can put it to it's highest quality setting and it works great. Same with Hulu, and Netflix. As well as streamed content from my HTPC.
I've played with the N7 at stores and it's pretty nice.
If Someone gave me one for free, I probably would use my flyer drastically less.
However, as much as I want project butter on my flyer I find that it would probably be a waste of money for me to personally upgrade. I'll still do the same stuff with either device.. Browse web, facebook, read books, and avoid pulling out a netbook when I can. So it raises the question why upgrade if I have a perfectly working device?

You sir are corect N7 blows but not Flyer away but simply BLOWS; with no SD card, no stereo sound, no vibra, no front camera, no pen, no HW buttons; so wjhat extra from cpu and scree is there left at all? No sim?
So that means:
limited to no small amount of space
Cant do videocalls (good luck with mirrors)
No silent alert wheil in classes, meetings ect...
Less screen
ect ect...
For mine usage of device it BLOWS unlike Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 wich is quite nice; more up to date device then Flyer and has that "magic" JB/ICS, wich Flyer doesent; but even with the JB ports we do have for Flyer we have more working hardware then Nexus have. And good luck with rearlly suported tegra games.

Umm, they are coming out with a 3g N7, you realize that, right? The sound between the two is comparable, as I HAVE both. Is having vibrate really necessary on a tablet? And it has a front camera, just no rear camera? I'm beginning to wonder if you have even used the device. It has a front camera specifically for video calls. HW buttons are a matter of preference, but not a necessity. The pen I will give you, but when you can't even get HTC to FIX the crap they broke with the update, IT"S NOT WORTH DEALING WITH IT. I will never own another HTC device after HTC screwed us over on the tablets. (not to mention the year wait on getting ICS on my old Tbolt, or 8 months for the rezound I bought) The SD card missing is a downer, but there are many workarounds that it's not a total loss. There is WIFI storage sharing (so I can use the 80GB I have on my phone between it's 64GB sd and 16 internal) Then there is USB OTG.
So that means:
limited to no small amount of spaceYou are not limited, just not as easy to add storage as with the flyer/View
Cant do videocalls (good luck with mirrors)This is just flat wrong
No silent alert wheil in classes, meetings ect... Really? It doesn't have a LED, but it does still "alert", just on screen. How many alerts do you have set up on your tab? I have almost none. Mostly calendar appt's and such.
Less screenHow? If there is a difference(16:9 vs 16:10) its a matter of a .1 inch or so.
I'm guessing his main language isn't english.
Pro-tip: Don't ask him to fix his english.

Yeah, I still honestly love the build quality on the flyer and it still has a relatively nice screen.
Since you are on the JB rom, I need to ask did they get the screen to turn off properly yet? That was the only thing holding me back personally. As long as it has good battery life I am really considering using it.

Not arguing just saying mine points about flyer and n7 since some overrating and only a few good points about n7 beeing presented wheil only bad ones about flyer beeing pointed out. Looking forward to hear from you and where i posted any missleads or lies or non valid points.
As for mine english : yes i could put more time into what i am posting but hey looks like u understand right. Hows your Slovenian? I did something in mine life to understand u, what u did to understand me?

if you are referring to the backlight remaining on after locking the screen - it still occurs quite often. however, if i turn it on and off a few times it eventually completely turns off (can be quite annoying) i am really not sure of the battery life as i basically keep the flyer charged.
P.S. I recently had a few random reboots ( but only once while I was actually using it ) and it won't play HD YouTube - not that big o f a deal to me
Nah

[Q] Coming from a TB, is the DNA a worthy upgrade?

So my upgrade has come along and I'm debating on which phone I can get.
I'm currently leaning on the HTC DNA, obviously.
I am slightly dissapointed from lack of expandable storage, but I can live with 16GB, I don't watch movies much or listen to music.
I mostly stream movies or YT videos.
Gaming wise I'm mostly just emulating and I'm sure a simple game of pokemon will not heat up my device. I will play retro-styled games or remakes from time to time such as Sonic CD and Radiant HD.
As much as I love flashing ROM's on my thunderbolt, I think I'll stick to stock until a simple root method is out, and will most probably root for Titanium backup and adblocking, nothing more (However thanks to the new adblock app I can disable ad's without root, but it will drain the battery faster)
So my main questions are these:
For previous TB owners, how's life w/o the kickstand? Truth be told I will miss that kickstand, it was perfect.
I love elegant looking things, is the 1080p screen really worth having? And do you notice any sort of lag on the DNA doing simple things such as running a livewallpaper or watching a few youtube videos?
Is the batterylife good? Really anything that can outlast my TB is great, I can go through about 1/2 a day with the type of usage I use my TB for (of course taking into account I'm running liquidsmooth desense ICS4.0).
These are really all I have to ask, I'll likely get a screen protector; but as far as cases go I prefer to go without. So I will ask; how durable is the phone? How easy is it to scratch the screen? I've heard a few people saying the screen shattering after dropping it on a hard surface once, which scares me. I drop my TB A LOT. But it's only had one small scratch and no cracks whatsoever in the 2 years I've had it.
Also I have another question regarding if I should get this phone for my father as well.
He is the average android user, has never heard of ROOT and barely knows how to access his widgets. He currently has a TB aswell with an extended battery. He is constantly recieveing calls, texting, and checking his yahoo mail (He's the average busy, busy man).
I'm feeling the note 2 is better for him, since I'm going to take a guess and say 11GB of freespace isn't going to be enough for him. Plus I'd see how S-Pen would be useful for him (I'm not too much of a fan of the S-Pen, I like to use my phone onehandid a lot.
Had a TB. Missed my kickstand a bit when I went to the Razr. Got over it pretty quick. Get the DNA. you will love it. I still have yet to root and Rom. Will get there eventually. This phone makes the Bolt seem like a playskool toy. Lol...
I haven't looked back at the TB. The wireless charging I love. My TB usb connections were always loose causing charging issues. The smaller phone felt small in my hands. I'm 6,3 and the DNA is perfect size. I do miss the larger battery and kickstand however with the fast charge option with the current roms I get almost a half charge while at lunch. Which will last me till midnight with Heavy use! As for kickstand I remember some case out there has one built in.
There's just so much awesome with the DNA! 1080p ftw!

Lol, yes.

Thanks, been looking at a a few more reviews; seems like the phone for me.
Not sure about my dad though; I know the note 2 is out of the picture since it's a tad on the big side.
DNA is out as well since he wants to use his current micro SD card. Look's like I'll have to get him an s3, still a pretty decent device.
making a choice in 2 weeks
So wife gave me clearance to drop the TB. Looking at the DNA and 8X. I told her I swear I will not root (the stipulation with upgrade). I never could get the phone to work as good as new with a root, and really, I don't run much rooted stuff.
I just installed TwistedUmbrella's ICS ROM and enjoy it. I never liked either Sense or Stock Android, always ran with either GoLauncher, or now my daily is SSLauncher.
I have already seen all the vids on performance and appearance and what not. Personal opinion on rooting. Why root when the custom rom isn't going to be an major upgrade (see TB!) from what its running now? Other than removing the Verizon bloatware, and side installing apps like Tethers or 'black market' apps, I can just run SSL and call it good, right?
I am not a 'power user', mostly music for it. Occasional facebook, and XDA. So what limits does the no-sd option leave me? How many songs am I looking at before I am screwed and have to pay for some cloud service?
Thanks guys, everyone on this site has been a major help in everything I have done with the TB to make it last this long!
interesting
Yes.
Get the DNA, you wont regret it
if you DONT get the DNA, you WILL regret it. forever.

I know its a positive upgrade, just curious about running the alternate launcher if that will suffice for customizing, and the amount of music on the 16G card.
My music is scattered about 5 folders and there is a ton of apks, zips, ROMs and backups, so figuring out my actual music quantity for comparison is a little daunting. Call me lazy, hoping you guys can give me an idea on that amount of space.

I run Apex without issue. I need the customization. After Android and bloatware you get about 11gig on your phone. How much your music will fill up depends on the size of each music file. I use a bunch of FLAC files so I only have a few albums on there and still have 6 gig left to play with. Just means you have to swap out your music more often. Still love the phone despite the small space.

Loving that statement haha!
I came from the Droid Charge (the crappy Samsung alternative to the TBolt), and I'll tell you I love this thing to death. I thought Super AMOLED plus was as good as it could get but boy does this screen prove me wrong. 16GB isn't a problem for me. The Charge came with 32GB but it was on a card, a slow one, so I never filled it up because it slowed the phone down so much. Having this 16GB full I saw no difference in the speed of the phone. I like Sense better than TouchWiz, but I'm sure a launcher would kill most of it if that's what you want.
As far as music goes, I was a little bummed that it isn't compatible with DoubleTwist at the moment because there's no mass storage connection option, so all my iTunes music won't play on it (it's all AIFF). On the upside, with the beats audio the music I've taken the time to load onto google music streams great, sounds almost as good as my ipod in my car (which plugs in USB) through the aux jack. And I'm an audio nerd, so I was impressed with that.
I would say take the plunge, you won't be disappointed.
Yes the DNA is worth it

Yeah, seriously man, it's a HUGE upgrade.
Looking at the two side by side, my TB just seems kind of... dumpy. If you're into elegance you'll wonder how you stuck with the TB this long. And when you're actually using it -- no comparison. I was running Liquid's ICS ROM as well and while it did the job, it's still kinda clunky (especially the recent apps). Whereas the DNA just flies. And the screen is ridiculous.
You'll probably get over the kickstand (I didn't use mine too much but thought it was a cool feature), and sure, the storage is definitely a trade-off. And I preferred AOSP on my Bolt, but I'm honestly dealing with Sense just fine. Root and ROM and few tweaks and it's more than usable. I always liked Sense's cameras and the text selection zoom thing they have going on. The messaging app is pretty nice, too.
I can't comment on its finish's durability. I keep my phones naked but don't tend to drop or abuse them much. But with Gorilla Glass 2 and the matte back, I think you'll be fine. Battery is also okay. It should get you through a full day, but it's nothing to write home about.
Anyway, yeah, you should probably get it.
Thanks guys, appreciate all the opinions. Maybe it's time to 'cloud up' and start using those services.

The Thunderbolt was a hell of a device in its time, but the DNA blows it away. The DNA is definitely much smoother. Specifically noting the screen transitions, i have seldom seen it lagging or jittery. Tho by the end of its life my thunderbolt had seen more roms than a Nintendo emulator. So i guess my experience with the thunderbolt "stock" isn't great. The playstation emulator seems to run flawlessly on the dna, as well I've had good experiences video streaming which always seemed to be a problem on the TB (never could get the youtube app to work right). I've had good experience with google play music handling my music and just putting a select playlist on my phones memory. The audio quality just playing though an auxiliary port in my car is much better than the thunderbolt. The battery lasts longer as well. You wont go all day with heavy use but it is definitely better than the thunderbolt. I do miss the kickstand tho.

Thanks! And I never really got into the kickstand. The only time I would use the kickstand is when I plugged in to watch something, which meant I couldn't do both, or when I was listening to music to stand it up while plugged in. But usually lay down for that since its a ***** to do screen actions without the phone moving.
Seems my only concern now is storage, I will have to see just how much my music takes.
I'm a bit excited, I see adrynalyn lurking around these parts. I recognize him from my time with the thunderbolt.
