Android > Android Remote kb/mouse/control app. Does one exist? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to use my broken screen'ed Nexus 4 as a XBMC unit. Trouble is, its a bit of a pain to do anything on it because of the screen being broken (touch screen 25% of the area works).
So basically I need some software which allows me to connect from a "client" (ie other phone/tab) to control it. I know i can use Yatse or any of the other XBMC remotes once i'm running XBMC but there are times where i need to do other stuff on it.
Anyone have any ideas? I've tried Tablet remote which does some of the things. But it only really has functionality of a keyboard arrow keys ther than touch/mouse control. Also I know there is another app which seems pretty useful but it has been open sourced called Screen Standby which apparently has a remote control aspect but since its a pay for app that hasn't been updated for nearly a year i'm reluctant to purchase.
anyway. thanks in advance.

Has anyone here used the Streak as a Home Automation remote?

I've seen some apps and hardware out there, but I was wondering if any users here have user or are currently using their streak in a home automation/home theater setup....
would love to hear about someones setup or to get some advice on how to do it.
Thanks
I have Insteon lighting all through my home that is controlled from a PC running HCA Home Automation software. My home theater is ran from a Lenovo touch netbook/tablet for media remote control, that also connects to the Insteon PC to control the lighting. The HCA software has Android software that is in Marketplace that I have loaded on my Streak, which can also control the lights, but it isn't my primary method of control.
HCA http://www.hcatech.com/ is pretty cool because once you buy the base package, you can run it as a server on a main machine, then reinstall it on as many other machines as you want in client mode, plus it supports touch screens if you want to use those in your home. I run it in client touch screen mode in my HT, and you can do that on your iPhone or Windows Mobile phones also, at no extra charge. The software is easy to modify to do custom programming. If I didn't have the 10" tablet, the Streak could take the place of it. But since it is larger, I'd rather use the tablet in my theater.
I went through many other packages before I settled on this one. I have 30 light modules in my home, and I can control any or all of them from my streak either over WiFi inside my house, or over the Internet when I'm away from the house. It also monitors my security cameras and DVR remotely.

[Q] Archos Remote Control Ripped out yet?

I don't have an Archos but I have a Galaxy 10.1, Asus Transformer, and a Galaxy S phone. I have been trying to figure out how to strap the 10.1 to a headrest and remotely play movies for my son in the back seat and I'm hoping the Archos software would be the key.
Has anyone ripped the Remote Control Server APK from this rom to be used in other tablets/phones. The controller is on the market but the server side is not
Or if someone knows a way to do this that would be great. (Note: DLNA is nice but its a full PUSH and what I want to do is control the media already on the tablet, or use the Sprint 3g on the 10.1 to stream netflix.
I have tried Server VNC for droid, and it breaks on tablets.
Thanks for all your help!
Maybe someone with an Archos and another Android device can analyze what is sended by the other device to the Archos (Wireshark for example)

I am fairly sure this is not an APK, as sin not a simple app. it is a service baked into the system code of the ROM. This kinda of app is not overtly simple to add to android even IF you had all the source to the ROM, which no one does for HC yet.
The only problem is to know what is said on the network. After that, creating the app to communicate with it is "easy".
Am i to understand that you want to stream video to Archos from your Asus/Samsung ?
No, he wants to control his expensive Samsung 101 via a remote.
Something that comes included with any cheap Archos Gen8 ;-)
Expensive
Yes, its more expensive then the Archos but its 3g via Sprint. So I can stream, check email, watch IP cameras for restaurants that I am responsible for. But when traveling with the kids its nice to put in a headrest strap and control it.
Right now my son who is 3 will either tap the screen and freak out because the movie stopped playing, or if he is holding it he ends up stuck in some app. This will allow my wife or myself to start other movies, netflix streams, etc..
Headrest monitors for cars are not cheap (unless you get some really poor generic ones) and once the kids hit 5 years old they will not want to watch a linear movie, they would want to watch and interact with the web. (Humm or maybe I'm the biggest kid in the equation )
Right now I can DLNA push a video to the tablet using BubblePNP (Works great) but its annoying when my phone wifi sleeps or phone calls seem to mess with the connection. Remote control will keep each device truly separate. How many times I have walked out of the car to get gas out of range of the DLNA sharing is annoying.
Here you go...
I Hope this is what you are looking for...
Ripped out...Have Fun!
He doesn't need the remote, he needs the receiver for the Samsung.
I saw the words "remote" and "software" in the OP.
Yes, but he's searching the server side of the remote software ^^
Looks like the best way to get the Archos remote server app is to unpack Archo's firmware and take the server app out.
I found some linux tools that can do this, e.g. using aos-tools
However, my linux skill is only novice level at best, so I don't think I can unpack it successfully and find the remote server app.
Anyone happy to give it a try and share the file?
I see the instructions to unpack can be found here: http://archos.g3nius.org/index.php?title=The_aos-tools_Toolchain
I was looking for such app and Archos seems to the the only company which have a Android remote app right now... I am interested to install the remote server app on my Android phone or tablet and see if it works.
for control the tablet from an android phone you can use DroidMote Server / Client in the android market.

Ideas for an information board

My goal here is to make an EASY to use display for people be able to read DOC, PDF, XLS files.
Here is what I want to use:
1. Rikomagic MK802 III
2. Logitech T650 touchpad
3. 1080P 52" LG TV. (We already own this)
4. Office/PDF app such as: Kingsoft Office, or Easy PDF reader
I plan to connect the MK802 to the tv then install the touch pad (in the available USB slot) and have people use the touchpad to "flip" through files.
In my mind it seems simple enough but some questions I have are:
A. Does anyone know a way to lock android into a "demo mode" of sorts. Where only one app is accessible and the screen stays on?
B. Has anyone used the logitech touchpad T650?
C. Any better app suggestions? Keeping in mind easy is the key.
Just found a cool app that will take care of the demo mode that I want:
KioWare Kiosk Mode Software
On the MK808 custom software, you can disable the navigation keys... essentially keeping from anyone escaping. It is possible to bring back the navigation and exit but not at first glance...
Not sure how you could do this. Maybe a tasker sequence to check if XYZ app is running else launch XYZ. So even if someone did exit, it would relaunch.
Combination of both?

did it work?
Hi, did the Logitech Touchpad work?
I tried the newest MK 802 (8G, bluetooth) with Apple Magic Trackpad and it did not work - no mouse movements, no clicks.
This might be of use to you, Smart Protector. I've used it in conjunction with launchers that can hide icons to stop anyone from messing about with the setup.

[Q] Warcraft Control

I saw a video of a guy using his phone as a controller for World of Warcraft while running the game on his PC. He was essentially using the phone as a casting bar. I'm wondering what software (if any) is the best for that sort of thing. I basically need something that will act as a second monitor for my laptop and let me create custom buttons on that screen.
In fact, I don't even need the screen function. I just need a tap on my phone to register as a keypress on my laptop, and I need to be able to configure a grid of buttons. Being able to also give them custom icons world be ideal, but that might be too much to hope for. And connecting via bluetooth would also be smashing, but again probably just a dream.
Is there something out there like that, or was that video just a fabrication/test?
If I had to guess, that was proabably a WoW hack. Most likely, it was interfacing with his WoW account and not with his computer directly.
I dont play wow but apps like blueputdroid or other bluetooth keyboard like apps may work right i know that app has all the f keys and watnot??
Could he have been using Kainy?

nVidia Shield Android TV - Post your home screen

We seem to be missing the required "Post your home screen" thread - so let me start it off !
Here's mine. I'm using HALauncher so that I can customize the home screen to my needs. I'm a big fan of HALauncher as it allows:
1 - Control over grouping and ordering. On the Shield default launcher, most-used apps go to the front of the line, so the order is always changing.
2 - Add sideloaded apps
3 - Add web page bookmarks
4 - Add wallpaper
5 - Add custom images for apps on launchers

I figured I'd get in on this. This is my SATV home screen. I am using Next 3D launcher and Go Weather EX for the weather widget as the SATV doesn't have the ability to use system widgets, but Next launcher can use widgets specifically built for it like task manager, music, weather, switch, and a few others.
do you need to be rooted to use a launcher, or it just that you click on the luancher icon and then it opens the new menu interface and thats it?
up
do yo uguys mouse and keyboard to navigate? isnt that annoying and takes away from using the remote etc
WHEN you use a luancher is it default... how do you set it to be default
My home screen is just stock. But I too would like to know how you got these launchers to work? And do you have to use keyboard mouse or no?

Start by looking up a few reviews on YouTube and you will see the potential, pretty much play games, watch movie, TV, play music, really just about anything with the proper setup

how do you benefit from a full android experience?
I am using the sideloader and it seems to work well.
Launchers maybe?
Happy Shield TV Setup
Very happy with my Shield TV setup now.
I gave the stock experience a go for a good week before getting fed up of the limitations of Android TV, despite loving the well polished user interface.
Now running full Android 5.1 (v2.2 of zulu99's build), rooted with TWRP recovery and Xposed framework installed.
With a variety of Android TV apps sideloaded from apkmirror.com, I'm now pretty close to having everything which I had before on stock:
Slick, remote-friendly launcher: HALauncher (with lovely background / wallpaper images)
SHIELD Remote as primary input / control device, 90% functional (physical buttons, volume control, audio output when heaphones connected all work, microphone doesn't work yet)
Remote-friendly TV versions of Netflix, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, Emma for Spotify and SHIELD Hub / GeForce Now
Casting entire screen (or specific cast-enabled apps such as Netflix) from Android works and performs well enough to cast an entire movie
With all the numerous advantages of having full android, such as:
Multiple user accounts / profiles (my wife's Spotify plays no longer feed into my last.fm profile, thank god!)
Fully automated video downloading setup, thanks to Pushbullet, Advanced Download Manager and Tasker
Chrome web browser, for web browsing on your TV (finally!)
Casting screen from wife's Macbook Air and/or iPhone now works too, thanks to app "AirPlay Mirroring Receiver"
Thanks to all here who have helped get me to this stage! - primarily zulu99 for his full Android build, but everyone else who has helped by sharing tips/tricks to improve various bits of the experience.
The only thing left to get working as far as I'm concerned is the SHIELD Remote microphone.
This is a really frustrating one, as it's such a nice to have feature and really makes it feel like a futuristic device when you never need to type anything again - Google's voice recognition is outstanding.
I'm also at a bit of a loss as to what to investigate next with it; I've attempted to debug the remote from my PC but could only get it to create a single uni-directional A2DP channel for audio playback.
I guess I should start trying to dig through the kernel modules included in the stock system image.
Anyway, here's the top bit of my home screen:
and a few other screenshots showing the rest of the home screen, settings and the microphone issue.
How do you change the home launcher without changing away from stock.
Almost a real Android now!
@zulu99 Full Android 5.1 (v2.2 build), rooted with Nova Launcher. Still need to install Xposed framework and a few other bits, but getting close to having a real Android now!
Loving some of the setups you guys have! I'll have to get to work on setting mine up.

Hey,
how did you manage it to have the volume buttons of the Shield TV remote working?
I am also running zulus' Full Android and paired the remote with bluetooth but the volume buttons are not working...
Did you do anything special?
A working microphone would make it just perfect
Thanks!

I'm actually not entirely sure, the volume slider on the remote wasn't working for me initially either.
I had written it off as something that wasn't going to work, but then noticed it was working accidentally later on after I'd set up more apps.
I believe all I did between the time where it wasn't working and started working was:
Install a few apps made for Android TV (e.g. Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HALauncher, Emma for Spotify)
Disconnect and reconnect the controller a few times
Restart the Shield TV (NSTV) a few times
If you give the above a try and the volume controls on your remote are still not working, post in my other thread about the remote and I'll try and narrow down what's making it work for me!

Thanks for your support.
I will test that during the weekend
Are the volume buttons for you only working inside HAlLauncher or also in the "normal" Android Launcher?
