[Q] Any Chance Ubuntu Touch on VZW GS4? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hello Everyone!
I am an old man when it comes to this website but a young steer when it comes to posting on it, I have been lerking these forums for a while with the Droid 1,2,3,4 and now Samsung GS4 all from Verizon.
I was curious of opinions on the Ubuntu Touch Operating System... Would you like to see it come to the Verizon S4? I personally would love to. Do you think it will make it or do you think dev for the S5 will take over? Just looking to get ideas on what to do with this phone when its old and grey in a few years. I have been trying to make my D4 into a MP3 player forever but cannot find a 'simple' ROM to run it on.
Best regards,
Colton22

I know it was being worked on for different S4 variants, but there's no way to make it worked on locked bootloaders so far. I don't know if that's possible. But there's a native booting Ubuntu set up for the AT&T S4 and I think there was a version of ubuntu touch released but it wasn't near complete last I saw.
EDIT: Also, make sure to ask questions in the dedicated Q/A section

Bootloader Locked == No.

I was really curious and am still hoping to even a similar themed light weight rom. Sorry about posting in the wrong section and it has been noted

Some questions

Hi guys
So the Galaxy S2 is hopefully coming here soon to Canada and I just had some questions about it.
1) I'm pretty used to looking at the Atrix forums and the problems associated with the bootloader and Motorola's lack of interest in updating their phones.
Does Samsung also have a bad rep for updating their phones or are they pretty good about it?
2) Also, I don't see much action happening in the dev forum ATM.
Is that normal because the phone hasn't been released in the states or is there some restriction stopping people from developing for this phone?
b) Or are people not wanting to put custom ROM's on the phone because it's really good?
3) I read something about Canada and an "AWS version". What does that mean?
Those are the main questions I wanted to ask right now when I think of more I'll post them.
Thanks,
Elliott
1) Not so sure sure about Samsung, there have 3 firmware updates so far but news whether they will be updating to 2.4, fingers crossed though..
2) This is not so true, the development scene is doing quite well i'd say most notably from pulser_g2 and his custom VillanRom 1.1, there are 2 other custom roms ready at the moment as well, Light'ning and one by AngeloM, CyongenMod 7 is also in the works as well. my money is on pulser's VR 1.1 one though, I stand by it .
3) Coming from Australia probably not the best to answer but AWS is a spectrum used by USA/Canada telcos how it compares to the others I have nfi.
If your wondering about this phone, i'd say look no further.
Is that normal because the phone hasn't been released in the states or is there some restriction stopping people from developing for this phone?
Its not two months old yet and many devs do not have SGS2 they have to go out and buy out of their own pocket .
b) Or are people not wanting to put custom ROM's on the phone because it's really good
YES
jje
Thanks guys.
Any info regarding questions #1 and 3?
Just adding to #3: it was something about Canada maybe not getting an AWS version or something like that? (and what is AWS?)
Does anyone else have anything to add with regard to my 1st and 3rd questions?
Also, if I get a phone that has the yellowing problem on the screen I should be able to return it for one that doesn't, correct? (I'm with Bell in Canada) [I realize the phone is not out yet in Canada...but when it is]
Bump...anyone?

yes ive read people with that issue returning it
also people that get pink spots when taking pictures returned it
Thanks. Is that still an issue with the new batch of phones or it still is? I love this phone but I'd rather not buy one knowing that they all have problems...

1 no Samsung are fair and SGS2 has had about five updates .
3 plenty of custom roms around you cannot have many users of custom roms when the phone is only a few weeks old .

Sticky Request i777 =/= skyrocket

I would just like to request that a sticky be made or a warning be added to the main stickies in the original and ported development forums to warn users that the i777 Galaxy S II 4G is not the i727 Galaxy SII Skyrocket. It seems really easy for myself as well as others to confuse the two.
I bricked my friends Skyrocket after flashing a ROM from the ported development thread as others have also done. Here is the post from the skyrocket forum.

So, I made the stupidest mistake ever flashing a rom. My friend comes over and tells me his phone is slow and acts funny. He says that he wants a new Rom which is more user friendly (if there is one). So, I've already flashed a ROM on his phone before so it already had CWM recovery installed. I decide to try MIUI on the phone.
The first thing I do, which is what I always DID (and unless I get lazy will never do again) is open up google and type "XDA AT&T Galaxy S II", fairly harmless, I though but it turned out to be a fatal mistake. I search the forums, see buzz about ICS leaks and figure I'm in the right place then I see a section called ported development. I go there and see MIUIandroid for Galaxy SII right off the bat and download it without a second thought. This may seem obviously wrong to you all but being that I am a Nexus S 4G user, I am unaccustomed to the numeration of the model number, I thought i777 sounded correct.
I boot into recovery then proceed to back-up the phone, wipe data, cache, dalvik, and finally system like always then flash the rom. It flashed just fine then I returned to the recovery screen and tapped reboot system.
It never turned back on. No matter what I did to try to get a response (two buttons then plug in usb to get ODIN with and without the battery), nothing, no response. I didn't figure out why until I went to find JTAG services and found that the i777 was in fact the older model.
I plan to send it in to be JTAG'ed and buy my friend a Galaxy Nexus. We've been friends for years and he isn't mad at all. I have a job and can afford it (even though it sucks). I figure I owe it to him. However this could have all been avoided if I had paid attention.
In closing, I would first like to suggest some things so maybe some of you learn from my mistakes.
1. As experienced an XDA'er as you may think you are, even you can make (uber) rookie mistakes. Pay attention and work slowly, your wallet will thank you!
2. Never, EVER flash a rom for a friend! The worst things always tend to happen when you are using someone elses stuff! (no idea why, but they do!)

I recognize many will say I didn't pay enough attention and that this is completely my fault. That's true, it is.
However, I think adding a warning wouldn't harm these forums and feel that it would be extremely helpful. Most people are not perfect and small reminders like that could help spare users from making a grave mistake.

Just curious... if you didn't take the time to see if you were in the right forum, would you have REALLY checked the sticky to see if it was the right forum also?
I guess if you say it would help.
I wonder if anyone has ever accidentally flashed a skyrocket rom on a i777?

Uh, how about no. Users should know this.. we do NOT need a sticky for this..

[Q] how to uninstall cyanogenmod 10 from galaxy s2 i777 trackfone/straight talk

ok..so here's the problem i have a Samsung galaxy s2 i777 from track-phone/straight talk (im not sure what it is...) it was sold to me online i reset the whole phone and this cyangenMod thing keeps coming up when it boots up after the factory reset I don't want it on the phone but i have no idea how to uninstall it or get rid of it. i just want to get the phone back to how it came out of the box like a new phone but i'm at a lost i've tried the oden program and the phone wont connect to it. i don't know what files it needs or what i have to do i'm at a complete and total loss...
if someone could help me out with this it would be a REALLY big help to me thank you to anyone who reads this and an even bigger thank you to the person(s) who help.
Why would you want to get rid of CyanogenMod? It's quite possibly the best thing to ever happen to phones.
Especially if you're running cm10.1, it's 4.2.2

There's a thread for the phone you have in this forum; look in the Straight Talk thread and you'll find the help you need.

I want to get rid of it cuz I have no idea what is what it can do or why it's even there I'm not a big fan of mods and if I were to mod anything i would do an extreme amount of research of how to install and uninstall with cm I have no idea what's going on

You want to get rid of it? Easy
Option 1: return it to seller, demand s/he send you another one with pure stock firmware on it, not a custom one or request for the refund.
Option 2: reverse back to stock (from CM) yourself. Since you're here, you should have read anyway, so read up those threads especially the stickies and DIY.

The other posters Actually have given you good advice, and it appears that they have pointed you to the place to answer your question! Really!
It sounds like you have a modified Straight Talk phone (please note that the ATT version is I777 and the ST version is S959G. It would be interesting to know whether you have an I777s or S959G).
IF you have an S959G, then your best bet is to check the thread posted down below as Phalanx and the others have mentioned --it's literally below the post you created (several posts below now, just look for the title "Straight Talk SGS2- SGH-S959G" (<- or click on these "straight talk" words)
It may seem frustrating to get a phone that is customized, and right now you just want a phone; However, you actually have one of the nicest and newest roms available for this type of phone!
IF your phone boots CM10.1 and you have the normal android screens, then you have everything that the ST or AT&T company would provide on a "normal" phone, but without some of the junk and advertising that often infects our phones! Try it out! The interface is not that much different from "stock."
Still, if you don't like your phone that way, YOU can fix it and it is not really hard, but just takes some reading and patience to gain understanding of the techniques and processes (learning the principles also is interesting! :laugh
But it will take you at least a few hours of reading, and a bit patience to scan through the Straight Talk links and pages. If you do that you'll see others who have your issue, and also others who turned the issue around to make it a plus!
A modified phone is more of a commitment than a stock phone -but it returns more to the user! Especially if you want to adjust it, enhance it, or appreciate it, you have to put in time.
If that's not for you -perhaps turn it around on ebay. But a working CM10.1 on a Galaxy S2 is a good machine!
Good Luck
Good Luck

getting sn s3 in a few weeks...a couple ?'s

i have been using the droid x2 for about two years. it has a locked bootloader, and very limited abilities as far as flashing roms goes. kernels will be a new thing to me. i have noticed that in most rom install instructions, there are no specifications on what version to be on. lol not something i am used to.
could someone point me in the right direction for some reading material on the subject? this phone specifically? i understand a fair amount about being rooted and performing various things within recovery and android in general. i just want to make sure that before i go messing around with my s3, i know exactly what im doing. thanks in advance.
also, i have read a decent amount already, and it seems like this phone is fairly easy to brick,? also not something i am used to. the droid x2 with its locked bootloader was next to impossible to brick.
cant wait to join the ranks.! thanks again.
read as many threads in General as you can

Good choice, mate!
Which S3 is it? I see you're in the USofA. There are several variants of S3 in the world. American/Canadian S3's are the Snapdragon variant, not the International variety, which is what this forum is for. If it is not the GT-I9300, anything you flash from here will definitely brick your phone.

thank you sir. ! i guess i would be getting the non international version. :highfive:
international version has many developers than the other variants. once you start flashing custom roms or kernels or mods, there is no guarantee that your phone will not brick. flashing without damage to the phone depends on how you do that. goodluck.

Yeah Make sure you're in the right forum for your phone. Follow that chart for your carrier.
Also if you happen to be getting T-Mobile,there is a new variant that has the LTE radio T999L which is a hardware difference and not a simple software upgrade. So if you did happen to get T-Mobile, hopefully you have the LTE variant.

What to do with an old I9300?

Hey fellas...
Yeah, after a long ride with my beloved G3 I9300, the time came and I moved on...
But, I still love this community and love the S3.
So here comes the question.
What to do with the old one? Or, what to do with any other OLD android device? Any tips?
Use is as something?
Thanks buddies
