[Q] New and needing direction - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

I am fairly new to the Android scene, and even newer to the rooting scene as well.
I am a A+ computer tech, that said I know nothing about Android, rooting or customizing the interface and am learning daily, I have been told by associates that the xda forums are the best resource for finding stable usable custom ROMs and information,
so I enrolled to pick some brains and hopefully learn a few things.
now since my ability to search forums has always has always been "top notch", (Pinocchio's nose got nothing on me by that statement), I'm sure I'll be asking questions that have been asked a bunch of times, I respectfully ask that in stead of flaming me, please just post a link to the proper forum post and I will be greatly appreciative.
question 1.
where do I find a rom install guide for idiots, primarily for a galaxy player 5.0 YP-G70
question 2.
what is the most stable and fully functional ROM for my YP-G70, when I say fully functional I mean camera and all, as I have been reading there are issues with newer ROMs with the back facing camera, and I need the camera to be fully functional as I use it almost daily at work for lables and assembly/disassemby pictures., I've heard that Cyanogenmod is one of the best out there, is there a fully functional and stable version that will work with my YP-G70?
question 3.
an idiots guide for what can be accomplished by rooting and how to do it, such as turning off adds, removing or moving stock programs and settings etc.
there will always be more questions but I won't push the noob envelope to much, these three are my most pressing

Flashing a ROM with Odin/Heimdall: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922461
Flashing a ROM via CWM:
Download ROM from site.
Place .zip file in /sdcard/external_sd/
Reboot in recovery mode.
Delete data/cache
Choose install zip from sdcard.
Reboot.

I'm running CyanogenMod 10.2 (4.3.1) and I'm able to use the back camera via High-Speed Camera (there are probably other apps, but this is the one I'm using). I don't know if it works with the other ROMs (and I don't see why it wouldn't), so someone else will have to get back to you w/that one.

If you want to remove stock apps, then you can download Titanium Backup (or an app that's similar) and uninstall them that way.

The short answer here is stick with stock. The rear facing camera has been a problem on every ROM, except stock based roms. There are some workarounds but If you need good quality photos from rear cam then stock based is your only solution...

Thank you both for the info and direction.
I know to keep something stock is to keep it original.... but what do you mean stock based? an original ROM that has been stripped but the core and drivers are the same?
and what stock based ROM would you recommend for my GP5.0 yp-g70 that might give me a little better performance and nice appearance?
also I haven't had a chance to explore all the information yet, but can someone give me a link to a good source of direction on how to use titanium backup, or some other app to back up my device, OS and apps so if I should get something not to my likeing I can revert back to original.
and thanks again for no flaming

Scroll down to "5.0 (stock based)"
"Stock based" simply means a modified stock ROM. "stock" sort of meaning; a ROM from the manufacturer. I haven't personally tried any of the stock based ROMS. They may have issues. Im only saying that it is the stock and stock based ROMS that have the potential to have a fully working rear cam. You have to read in each post to find out if there are issues.

[Q] new to vanilla roms :S

hi everyone!
i have some doubts about vanilla (froydvillain) vs sense. i recently rooted my hero and flashed a recovery, but i'm using stock 2.1 rom... so here you have some questions: (sorry if they are epically stupid LOL)
1. does 2.2 vanilla has flash lite in the browser... for example, when you go to a site in my current rom (2.1 official) you can see the flash animations etc., is it possible on vanilla?
2. does froydvillain support live wallpapers? (i know that they are useless but i love eye candy xP)
3. is there any app that has multi touch in sense and in vanilla doesn't?
4. will the lack of sense, in your opinion, be negatively noticeable? like the dialer, gallery, etc. if yes, are there any third party apps to compensate?
5. finally, what kernel should i choose?

1. No
2. Yes, subject to the usual limitations of the hero hardware regarding 3D wallpapers
3. Not that I know of
4. Not really to me, try nubdialer which should be in the rom, or dialer one. The gallery is a nuisance, but there are recommendations in the thread.
5. I would honestly use the stock one (ie. don't flash any one afterwards), as the ROM is sufficiently fast with no overclock to beat most phones with overclock (in terms of daily use)
thank you for the quick reply! i was going to ask about flashing the kernel but since you said it is not necessary i'll just forget it... about the gallery i'll just google it, about flash lite if i really really miss it i'll just go back to 2.1 rom... xD
well, thank you again!
i'm sorry for posting again, but at the download page are various links, one for the rom and a bunch for the kernels, my question is, do i have to download any kernel or is it "included" in the rom link? i know it is a noob question but it got me confused since at the list of kernels is the "normal" one (576mhz)...

I am using FroydVillian 1.5, it is super fast, stable and the looks are amazing. I do not miss the sunse UI at all, I miss the widgets, but they just use up performance anyway. I flashed the 576 kernel, which was a lower version number than the one that came with it...but as of right now, I have had FV 1.4 and liked it enough to get FV1.5. I have cycled through many roms, and these are the best in my opinion for everyday use...

[Q] Pdroid on Omega rom

Heya,
I have been trying to get pdroid running on Indie's Omega rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663656), but as yet have been unable to. Currently using Omega v11 but have been trying since v9.
The latest method I have been trying is by using the Auto-Patcher by mateorod and pastime (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1719408). Every different type I have tried comes back with 'error: failed framework.patch'.
So, the main question is, has anyone gotten Pdroid running on Omega rom or a stock S3 deodexed, rooted, rom and if so what patcher/script etc did you use?
Uptil now I have been using LBE but from everything I have read I would be remiss not to use pdroid instead.
I know I could switch to Aokp, CM etc, however I really like Omega rom and would prefer sticking to it if I can.
As this is my first post I hope it is in the right place, if this is not the case I apologise and please feel free to delete or move it as is fitting.
Thankyou in advance!
EDIT: Really? No one has tried putting pdroid on an omega/sammy rom?? Or am I missing something (ie a better alternative, it's not possible, etc)

Hmmm, PDroid hasn't been updated for a while and it was having problems with the latest ROMs in my old (faithful) Galaxy Mini, so maybe when a Universal Patcher comes out as promised by the developer we may be lucky. That is probably my most missed app. BTW, there were other patchers that are meant to continue on pdroid's so I guess you can try them, I haven't myself because I know very little about developing or creating ROMs, etc. I'm barely able to flash after reading the instructions about 32 times.
Unfortunately from what i understood that great tool of autopatchrr is working only on cms aosp and aokp.
We have to hope period owner will throw out a specific version of it for ics jb ...
Thought this thread got buried without a reply. New version of the autopatcher is out, is looking closer to working on non aosp/aokp roms. (if not already?)
The alternative I have been using is LBE security, not the market one as that isn't JB supported.
The english translation of the latest versions are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422479
Still buggy but overall works well.
LBE is a security problem

LBE is a closed source product. Devs are not responding. The app has complete root access.
=> BIG Security ISSUE
If you really go for security I would use this. Just answer for yourself:
Do you trust the manufacturer of LBE in a way that you open the complete phone for any access for them just to stop a couple of applications accessing your contacts? (just as an example ...)
Finally Noxious Ninja was able to run PDroid on Galaxy S3 with Stock ROM and TouchWiz!
But it's for the Verizon Version.
I hope with this the biggest obstacle is overcome. Maybe here is somebody able to make it analog for the International Version (I9300) and Omega Rom?

Awesome news, nicely spotted. Hopefully it wouldn't take too much to do it for the international. If I knew enough I would give it a go myself.
Been a long time coming.
Ninja didnt share the most important thing. How he managed to run the patcher on that ROM.
Maybe it would be already possible to create the patch.., we need to know how he achieve this. I was already writing in there

[ROM][4.0.4][Smooth]|l|l|l|l|l|l| Aberration 1.3 |l|l|l|l|l|l|l| 08/25/12

(Click on image above to go to the Aberration website)
This is a continuation of my previous ShishirROM series of ROMS that started out on Gingerbread 2.3.4, and have evolved and expanded to today, where the latest version of ShishirROM is based off of XWLPG 4.0.3. Aberration is built completely independent of those and the only resemblance to my old ROMs is the dialer, which was an original creation anyways, but at it's heart, it's the next step. The ROM focuses on speed and smoothness and battery life. It incorporates common-sense fixes and ground-breaking features as well as third-party applications that bring something new to the table every time you use them. The ROM was inspired by the old Samsung gingerbread ROMS -- they were stable, fast, and just worked. This ROM manages to bring the same sort of feel back to the table while maintaining an updated look similar to the Galaxy S3 series of phones, and Android's resident Holo design. The Aberration Settings application is an extension of this ROM that lets you change some deeper settings, such as using Lidroid's beautiful 14 Notification Widget Mod instead of the default themed widgets, as well as provide an easier way for users to update to the latest version of Aberration, no matter which model of the Galaxy S2 they're running. This ROM aims to be the ONE ROM that supports every Galaxy S2 phone, and brings them on par with the super-phones coming out later this year. It's an update away from giving your phone four cores, two gigs of RAM, and a 4.8" SAMOLED HD display.
Features:
ODEXED (for smoothness)
Based on XWLPM
Siyah
Aberration Settings app
Lidroid 14 Quick Toggles
AROMA Installer
Google Now
Lux Auto-brightness
Opensource Sensors library (more accurate and faster)
Holo/Jellybean inspired styling
Apex/GS3/GS2 Launcher
GS2/GS3 Music application
Easy-Update
Samsung Dive
Complete development cycle
Directions:
Install i9100 zip in CWM
Wipe Data
Configure installation & install ROM
Reboot
Set-up ROM, download apps, etc.
Reboot again to settle everything

I built this ROM directly from XXLPM stock, not ported it from another unrelated device, sorry if that was unclear. The Galaxy S2 i777 and Galaxy S2 i9100 are EXTREMELY alike, so alike in fact that about five files hold the changes between them. No actual porting was done.
And I can't provide a link to the original since I made this, and this is the original lol. It's just a Stock Samsung ROM based off of 4.0.4 LPM with a few tweaks and fixes thrown in.
EDIT: Let me try and be more clear: this ROM was built off of XXLPM. It was initially tested on the i777 because that happens to be the device I have, but the development of the ROM was exactly the same for both versions. The i777 and i9100 versions are very different. Different modems, kernels, libs, etc. This ROM truly was built for both devices in mind, therefore it isn't a port.
EDIT2: Moved

What he means is that what special features or original features does the rom have in order for it to stay in the original development for example paranoidandroid, it has the capability of changing per app dpi, from phone ui to a tablet ui etc. Jkay framework which can customize almost everything from the lockscreen to the notification bar. Because if it is just a cooked rom with some features that has been gotten from other devs, it should belong to android development. But i may be wrong, maybe you have something special in the settings you mention on the OP. Good luck on your rom bdw.
Cheers!

Hello,
I wanted to try your rom, so i downloaded the i9100 zip and followed the installation steps and i got installation completed without any problems.
Then i choosed to reboot. The screen showed the Siyah logo, then the phone gave me a sound... and then nothing. Black screen. I have tried again and again but the same result. Maybe i am doing something wrong.
Thanks

Anybody else facing this issue. Any suggestions for this issue.
For everyone facing the black screen issue, first make sure you're running the i9100 version, and confirm that you wiped data before installing, then try flashing another i9100 kernel before you boot up for the first time. It sounds like the kernel didn't get flashed for some reason. I'll have to do some more digging. If anyone can grab a logcat then i'd appreciate it, although I don't know if the Log service got started after the Siyah screen.
If it still doesn't work, it may not have gotten installed properly. Try going into mounts/storage in CWM and wipe /system, manually do a factory reset/wipe data, and wipe cache as well. That should get everything.
EDIT: If you're getting the sound after boot, that just means the boot animation isn't showing for some reason. Give it five minutes and see if the phone boots up. If so then I'll upload a fix for this when someone confirms that's the issue.

[Q][Player 4.0] Remics CM9

I have a few questions that I was wondering about. *I'm a noob at everything beyond rooting and flashing ROMs, so please don't kill me. Also, I can't post on dev forums, so please don't direct me to a dev forum to ask for help.*
A. Does anyone know if it would be safe to use the CameraFirmware.apk file from the IcyFusion ROM to make the camera functional in Remics UX for SGP 4? It is the same firmware even between ROMs because the physical camera hasn't changed, right?
B. How can I make the physical home button work? Is that involved or are there files I can just copy for a quick fix?
C. I noticed that gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip force closes even after I have flashed it. Which version is recommended for the Remics UX SGP 4 ROM?
Thanks in advance to any help you provide, and tell me if there is somewhere more appropriate for me to post this.
EDIT: I realise now that the United States version has a softkey home button, which is what I intended to say by physical home button.

Well... That list is inaccurate. If you do install it, all it provides is an activity to dump or update the camera firmware. You can verify that on any launcher that allows you to add shortcuts to arbitrary activities. If it is needed for any camera app, it is only on stock roms. For example, the SGP5 has that apk on stock, but the camera works in cm10 without it

Getting buttons to work is a kernel configuration issue. For GAPPS, make sure /system has enough space, and try flashing other ICS packages.

[Q] KitKat 4.4 suggestions

Hello, I now have a SGS2 9100P with 4.1.2 stock ROM rooted with PhilZ CWM based recovery.
I would like to upgrade it to KitKat 4.4 and I found out 3 candidates:
CM11
SlimSaber
OmniRom
I don't want any special feature, I would only like to have the plain Android with GApps and a good CPU/battery performance, but I need all the HW feature active (such as front camera, NFC, tethering...).
I would also like to be sure I can get back to current ROM just restoring my current Nandroid backup.
Which one would you suggest and why?
Any other candidate?
Thank you very much!
[EDIT]
Important: this is not about what's the best ROM, I'm only asking which one of those will allow me what I asked.

Thank you very much!
[EDIT]
Important: this is not about what's the best ROM, I'm only asking which one of those will allow me what I asked.

Hey...i'm from SlimSaber thread...
So....my suggestion and why.
Kitkat is immature as of now....afaik...and yes...I did test Slimkat Sabered ....but...if yoj don't need features.....you could go for it with couple of common #blame Samsung issues and such....I really don't know about NFC or any workaround to get it working...or if it works....so....the best I can suggest is....close this thread and go for a reading trip over the threads and look at responses by users....you don't even need to ask anything....a lot is going on and peeps keep posting this n' that....just read man....and you'll become enlightened man:good:

Thanks for your answer, but keeping pace with those three threads is impossible by a human beeing!
I thought those few questions were quick ones for ones who knows the three ROMs listed.
If they three all can be completely reverted with a nandroid restore, I could test them all.

Hi,
I'm also from slim.
In order to resume a little bit, with slim or any aosp based rom:
-Mali drivers, are not from original Samsung source,
-fm radio is absent but you can use an App called spirit FM to have a workaround.
-HDMI output trough micro USB is not available, due to, again lack of drivers from Samsung.
NFC, is not in the slim rom (i don't know other roms), but there is a patch that you can flash (Google xda i9100 NFC) and with slim rom for i9100 + NFC patch, NFC will work, afaik.
Slimkat is still in beta phase, that is to say, most of the great slim enhancements are not still ported due to slim team is working to recode in order to have a real slimkat code rather than adding just the enhancements. That is what makes slim different from others.
Finally, nandroid. you come from stock rom, with philz recovery and you make nandroid.
To flash slimkat, (I don't know other roms) first you must flash a kitkat compatible recovery, and then reboot in recovery to flash slimkat.
IN order to go back from slimkat, from slimkat recovery you should flash first Philz kernel/recovery flashed and used to make nandroid, reboot to recovery and then restore nandroid.

Hello, I now have a SGS2 9100P with 4.1.2 stock ROM rooted with PhilZ CWM based recovery.
I would like to upgrade it to KitKat 4.4 and I found out 3 candidates:
CM11
SlimSaber
OmniRom
allow me what I asked.

I know telling you try them all is not helping. But that's actually true.
Personally I love SlimSaberKat of @fusionjack.
Anything HW goes smoothly...
NFC is an /p feature so I don't think is implemented in slimkat. I think if you look around you can find how to add it.
Nandroid works
however please note that 4.4 is very different and some apps MAY NOT BE SUPPORTED YET. They will need to be upgraded to new infrastructure but depends on app's developer, not the ROM.
Back to kill button doesn't work... That's all. If you use nav bar you can use that back button and works just fine. I have a task manager and does great job.
Be careful that you have to install first the KitKat recovery then reboot in it and from that install the ROM.
Personally, I like slimkat for DPI, features, smoothness, ART working great, helpful devs, etc...
I suggest (and it will take just a couple of hours) flash first slimkat then any other ROM... You'll return to it finally.
However, note that any KK is still work in progress so don't expect that you flash one last version and you're set for life.

Also, if you use Banks' Core Gapps you don't get the crappy Google experience launcher with it and get to choose for yourself which google apps you want. They also survive OTAs. No need to reflash them every time.
Mod Edit
"Best" ROM/kernel threads are not allowed on XDA.
Please test these things for yourself.
This is the only way you will get an unbiased opinion, and then, you can decide for yourself if it meets YOUR needs.
