[Q] Cant get OTA update in my rooted Samsung galaxy s3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I cant get official OTA update for my Samsung galaxy s3 from Android 4.1.2 to 4.3. Whenever i click system update it shows " Your system is up to date" . I know the reason for getting this problem. Because i have rooted my phone. Now can anyone help me getting ota update without losing any data and root access.
Details:
Samsung galaxy s3 GT-19300 international version
Android 4.1.2
Stock rom
Cwm recovery
Baseband version :19300xxema5
Flash counter displays '1'.
This is because of flashing chainfire root to acquire root access
Triangle away not used.

Its cause your system is modified (facepalm) ie rooted.
Just flash the latest firmware whichever you want via odin or unroot fully if you want to get ota updates

Try to use kies, sometimes it doesn't mind heaving rooted stock rom...
Otherwise, you should use Odin as suggested

remember to use triangle away aswell

Unroot the phone im not sure if it works i haven't tried it but fully unrooting it from the supersu app then do the ota update and then root it back that's the only way if you don't want to go through the whole backup processes.
Its risky though just backup your apps with tib and move your important files off the sdcard and flash via odin it shouldn't take too long

How to update rooted phone ?

Hello
I had rooted my S3 few days ago with this tool SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 TOOLKIT V1.0 so my phone has now root access a CWM.
Modem version I9300XXLEF
Number version IMM76D.I9300XXALEF
But notification said that there's new update available - 8,91MB installation brakes after restart cause lack of some signed files, is it possible to update my phone now but without erasing any data ?
I have found latest firmware here Samsung-Updates.com-GT-I9300_XEO_1_20120612172415_pax5uhw4id.zip XEO for Poland but don't want to loose any data from phone
Which tool should I use and what files should I use ?
Thank You for any help.
If you want to go back to stock rom why don't you use the Toolkit again? It's pretty straight forward.
Just flash the latest Firmware via CWM if you want to update.
thread: Official Stock Firmware (up to latest)
back-up via Titanium Backup if you don't want to lose your data

I'm still on stock ROM but rooted and with CWM, so there's no way just to apply modified update, or to unroot it with stock bootloader just to do an update and then root it again with CWM ?
@bordikun
Yeah, I have read it but it's full firmware/ROM if I understand it correctly, I got Titanium Backup and use it but just feel that all this is just an overkill, so many procedures just to update 8,91MB of data ?
have you tried there ?

[Q] Cannot Update to 4.1.2

I have 4.1.1 Jellybean on my phone, is unlocked, an had no trouble updating to 4.1.1 from ICS. Now that my phone shows "Updates Available", downloads them files( I think), but does not install and rather says "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available". The new updates I have seen in my mate's phone are good, and as he told me he had no trouble updating to it unlike mine.
What is the problem and the best way to solve this issue?
Also I'd like to ask, if I used Odin to update it manually, will I be able to update my phone with later releases without having to use Odin again?

You answered your question yourself...modified = no ota update. Go back to stock unmodified or easier, download the new version from xda or sammobile and flash via odin

Well i don't know what you mean with "unlocked" . If you mean rooted then it's easy :fingers-crossed:. You might have rooted with CF-Root or Toolbox or whatever. And in that process you were forced to install Clockworkmod Recovery and that's the reason you can't get OTA. If you want to have a rooted phone and OTA all you have to do is. Root your phone, stay on stock rom and flash the stock recovery via odin. But this means you loose CWM Recovery and a lot of the fun part about a rooted phone is gone.

What part of "Unlocked" is confusing to you? It means the phone can run any sim card of any sim provider, thats what I meant, and no, the phone is not rooted or never even have tried rooting it... Never mind, I factory reset the phone and the update is done. Anyways kudos for your reply
Cheers!

Your device has been modified!!!???

I have a samsung galaxy young s6312, stock android 4.1.2 jellybean. I rooted it with framaroot using gandalf exploit. But i had to claim warranty for my device (something wrong with the phone speakers) so I unrooted it with framaroot. I had not installed any custom rom or custom kernel or custom recovery. But even though I unrooted, the device status shows custom instead of official. Also when I clicked on software update, it says your device has been modified. Software update is not available. I googled it and some sites suggested to remove the sd card and reboot the phone. I tried it but to no avail. Can anyone please suggest a method to change the device status from custom to official, as I want to claim warranty?? Thanks....
When you root your phone you can't update it if you want to update you have to find it on the internet and update manually

you cant update if you are rooted
so to update your phone you can try temporary unroot with superuser or any other app
to claim warranty you should flash the original firmware using odin

OTA on rooted international s3 -, help needed

I've just revived an OTA on my rooted international Galaxy S3.,
It says in the "Update Details" *You cannot downgrade to the old Software after this new software upgrade, due to the security reason.
This makes me think there going to lock my bootloader or something and if that's the case I'll just delete the update and change the phones internal settings so it won't download OTA's.
Recently I've been keeping my phones pretty much stock, a few small tweaks and a few apps that require root,
I'm thinking it will probably just fail the OTA update with the phones status now saying / being modified.
I've also got Mobile Odin installed with enable Everoot, Inject SuperSU and Inject Mobile Odin.
Has anyone been through this ( Int SGS3 Stock Samsung firmware, rooted with chainfires root software - OTA to 4.3 from 4.1.2 if you have how did you get on ??
Any help greatly appreciated.

OTA will fail if you have rooted. If you want to update to 4.3 then best results come from wiping, format internal storage then flash MK6 via odin.

SGH-M819N (Metro PCS) Mega update via Kies

I'm seeing an available firmware upgrade via kies (MK7).
I'm a little skeptical to try it. Has anyone else upgraded to this firmware?
If so, have you been able to root your mega and install a custom recovery after the upgrade?
I don't want to install this firmware upgrade only to find out that afterwards that knox is on it and prevents me from rooting the phone or unlocking the bootloader.
By the way, I tried downloading the firmware without my phone connected but kies keeps force closing on me before the download is complete.
I'm afraid to connect my phone and try the download because I think it will automatically install the upgrade which I don't want to do until I'm sure I can re-root it and re-install TWRP.

I bit the bullet and gave it a shot. I am happy to report that the firmware upgrade was successful using Kies, I was able to root the device via the Kingo Root app, and was able to re-install TWRP. I am now on firmware M819NUVUAMK7. It is still Android version 4.2.2, and the baseband is also M819NUVUAMK7. The kernel version is dated Fri Nov 22, 2013
I installed superSU and when I ran it, it asked me if I wanted to disable knox (YES OR NO). OF COURSE I DISABLED KNOX!!
I afterward performed a nandroid backup in TWRP (the first order of business).
I am more comfortable now deleting, freezing, uninstalling system apps now because (in the event of a softbrick or bootloop) I can always revert to my nandroid backup or in extreme cases, restart all over again by re-installing the firmware via Kies, re-rooting the device via the kingo root app, and reinstalling TWRP via ODIN.
Not sure what changed from the original firmware (no change log). In any event, the device is snappy and I'm not experiencing any lags.

as far as i know. there isn't a mod for Metro's phone. there are a few custom ROM's you can use that have free tethering built in. This one is the closest to stock. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2608110
It works fine on my M819N :good:

well easiest way is. if its your stock ROM that came with the phone when you bought it. it is odex.
if you are rooted, you can use root explorer to go into your system/app file and see if it shows odex settings for apps
I did and had no problem rooting with kingo. What I cannot find is a way around sim lock without going through metro and that sucks.

Almost had a heart attack from this upgrade. My phone was already rooted when I applied the update from Kies. Everything went through fine except when it restarted, I couldn't turn on Wifi at all and I was getting an E in the cell signal. I managed to download the TWRP tar file and Kingo app to root again. I was able to restore my previous backed up image and everything was when I last left it! WHEW!
That's strange. I had no problem. wifi worked and I haven't seen E at all (only 4g lte or 4g). My signal appears to be stronger and more stable with this update than with the original firmware (most of the time I have full bars). As mentioned I don't know what changes were made (no change log around) but this is my observation so far.

This string is present on my phone in download mode:
BOOTLOADER RP SWREV: 3
I have no lines displaying anything about KNOX.
In titanium backup I froze knox 1.0, knox notification manager 1.0, and knox store 1.0.
So it appears that knox is in the rom somewhere but it's had no impact on me. I'm rooted, have twrp installed and have flashed multiple custom roms on my device (both tw and aosp based roms).
Perfect, thanks! Glad you guys got spared from the horrid new Knox bootloaders. There's a small chance that the M819 can be downgraded to the older bootloader to remove Knox entirely, but if the update came with the newest bootloader (I got stuck with it on my i527M) there is no hope at all of downgrading.
Thanks to whoever posted this and the creator of this rom

I have the sgh-m819n metro pcs model running the mk7 firmware. This was the only rom that worked 100% for me. Im running twrp recovery, super user and free hotspot. Not to mention all the extra cool apps that it comes with. Big props to the developers of this software may your days be blessed with many more hacks.
Must be unrooted to perform update thru kies without errors..

These Roms and procedures are compatable with the M819n(metropcs) mega
