[Q] Can't connect to PC in anyway, shape or form! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone help?
I am a newbie to Android, but a bit of a pro with IOS!
My Brother in Law has been passed down a Galaxy S II by his Father, and want's it unlocking to all networks, so once again I have been dragged in to do it as with anything tech related.....
I have read the forums and understand how to root and unlock etc., but here is my problem.
I can't connect the phone to the PC in any way, shape or form.
It is locked to T-Mobile and is model GT-I9100 on 2.3.3 Gingerbread.
It won’t connect to Kies, Odin, or show up in explorer as a USB device etc. I have tried the suggested methods of debugging mode etc., tried various cables, different PC's, drivers.
I believe the fault is the phone, as if I plug my friends S II in Kies see it right away and installs drivers no problem, however they and on version 4.x.x.
The phone will charge via PC USB and also when I connect the cable it brings a screen up showing a USB plug and says MTP Application at the top and says connected, press the home key to quit Kies. But other than that nothing.
I also tried to update the software from 2.3.3 to the latest software via Wi-Fi from the phone, but again it gets as far as connecting to server for about a minute then just says connection failed.
I can only think it either has a software corruption or a faulty dock connector? Or perhaps I need drivers compatible with Gingerbread 2.3.3 and Windows 7.
Any help please!

I'd be replacing the USB board/port; quick/easy/cheap (~US$15) to do - search for KeithRoss39's guide in the General sections, has all the info you need.

Thanks for the reply.
Just had the back off and gave it a good clean, but no joy, so that may be the next step.
However when I connect the USB cable from the PC to the phone, the phone does pop up the MTP USB Application image on the screen.
But it isn't detected by PC at all.
Any ideas?

Yes. Replace the USB board/port. It often will show only a few faults (like you're seeing) rather than crap out completely. This is what I would do if I was in your situation.

As @MistahBungle says.....these ports do fail......
There are a number of specific connectors within the port.....each one controls a different function. So it IS possible for the port to remain functioning for charging while failing for PC connection (for example).
There really is no other option than to replace the whole port/board assembly.........

[Q] Can't connect to Moto Phone Portal when using USB

I can't connect the Atrix to the Moto Phone Portal using the USB. Just curious if there is a fix to this? Once the browser is launched (it doesn't matter which browser, IE, Firefox, Chrome) it doesn't connect. USB connection is set to 'Motorola Phone Portal' and Moto Phone Portal app says its 'running on on USB..."
Not sure what is going on- connects fine using Wi-Fi... just annoying that it won't connect with USB. Any help is appreciated?
Thanks,
M
are you on a mac? I think it requires the MotoHelper app on a pc - part of the PC drivers.
I had the same issue but I also couldn't connect via wifi. So... I turned off the debug under applications and then it worked fine. But haven't had time to try it with the usb but it may help.
I am on a PC and have the MotoHelper installed, but it still didn't work. Also I didn't see a debug under applications, haven't done any modifications to my phone (not sure if you need to modify to debug or not, but I couldn't find it).
Maybe its a driver issue with my dell...

Not a Dell issue. I have Dell running Win7 64bit and it works fine. Try to manually reinstall Motohelper. Also, under you Windows Start button you should have:
START>ALL PROGRAMS>MOTOROLA>Motorola Drivers>Motorola Driver Reinstaller.exe.
Run this CLEAN and REINSTALL and Selct START - see my attached. This will reinstall everything associated with the drivers and Motohelper. Reboot Phone and PC and then replug phone into PC and select USB with Motorola Portal.
Same Problem
I've tried all these things and mine keeps switching back to USb Mass Storage. If I switch it back to Motorola Phone Portal, it will give me the address for my browser and it will actually pull up the Portal on my computer but then the phone will switch back to USB storage and I can't go any further on the computer. I've rebooted the computer and the phone and nothing helps. Any help
I tried all those things as well, but still no luck. However, my phone stays on Moto Phone Portal as USB connection, but just won't connect/load the phone portal in the browser(s) when using the USB cable.

You should uninstall the Motorola Media Sync from the PC. I kinda like the software, but it does it's own thing to much with out giving me control. I have spoken to Motorola 2nd level support, but the were no help. They told me to ignore it or uninstall it. I uninstalled it. I left the Motorola drivers installed. If you reinstall the drivers it'll ask you to reinstall the Media Sync - say NO.
Once the Media Sync is gone, then the Portal will not auto load and you can have control of the USB settings from the taskbar.
I had a similar issues
....First, Moto Phone portal does not work on Chrome (insert IP address into IE or Firefox)
If you still have problems...
On phone, from home screen
select Apps drawer
select Phone Portal
select menu
select Settings
select Secure login
uncheck Enable login
did anyone come up with a fix for this? i have tried everything in this thread with no success.
USB Cable
I had this problem as well, just happened to have a few extra Micro USB Cables around. I found that the phone will work with some Cables and have problems with others. If you can try a different USB cable give it a shot.
It works just fine with Chrome.
The USB cable that came with my phone does not work.

[SOLVED] No USB connected. How to solve?

My Galaxy S3 doesn't connect any longer to my PC using a USB cable.
Better said, when I connect it, it makes a sound but nothing else happens, no change in the notification panel, and under settings USB tethering is unselected. Needless to say, my PC does not see the device.
I exclude a cable problem as I have two cables (one original) that were both working. I also exclude a PC problem as the situation replicates on both desktop (Win 7 x64) and notebook (Win 7 32-bit),and the latter has not been updated or had new software installed.
What I attempted:
un/select USB debug mode
un/install Kies
un/install Samsung USB drivers
wipe cache/dalvik/data reset+ format system + restore old backup from CWM
Does anybody have a suggestions on how to proceed? Thanks for your help!
Just on top on my head-do you maybe connect it to or thorugh a usb hub to a pc.
If so try directly into a usb on the pc.

Before I had been using with success a USB hub (only the desktop only, not the notebook), since I have been experiencing the problem I have also tried a USB port to no avail.
As I stated, I am pretty sure the problem lies with the phone, in fact since my original post I have seen a similar thread at here at xda
I tried everything and at the end brought the phone in for assistance.
Turns out the problem is hardware-related, on connector pin was burned. The connector has 4 pins out of which two are sufficient for charging (which is why it was being charged by the pc) but all 4 of them are necessary for the phone to be recognized as usb device.
According to the technician to whom I spoke, it happens occasionally but is not a systemic problem.

Problems connecting to PC

Hey guys. I'm sorry if this has already been posted, but I've searched everywhere on the internet and could not find this same problem. No troubleshooting tips helped either.
I own a Lenovo P2 and until recently I could connect to the PC via USB without any problems. Now, my PC doesn't recognize the phone at all. I mean that it doesn't even show up as faulty device or searching for drivers.
With no computer does my phone connect anymore.
The USB cable is not faulty either, nor the PC USB ports and the phone's jack, and the option for MTP is selected. Despite all this it only charges.
Here is the catchy part as the USB configuration setting seems bugged out for me. No matter which option I choose, MTP will show up as selected, yet the phone will only charge.

Question Problem with file transfer on windows

Does anyone have issues with transferring files to a windows PC? I plug my phone in and under USB preferences its grayed out. I've tried the xperia companion and it seems like my device isn't recognized because the option to browse my files is grayed out too.
It happened to me because I was using the usb-c cable that comes with the same phone.
What I did was look for another usb-c cable that I had at home (from my Xperia 5) and when plugging it into Windows 10/11 it recognizes it perfectly and on the phone you put "Allow" and you can transfer files.
Apparently the cable that comes by default in the box with the Xperia 1 Mark III does not support data. Greetings

The cable that came with my Phone (Phone bought from sony partner from official site) wrk for file transfer without problem (under win 10 e win 11).
Maybe different market, different cable bundled in?
Yeah, I also bought it from the official Sony store via Amazon. When I plugged it in and saw that it didn't work for data (or for recovery via Xperia Companion) I started googling and investigating and the same thing happened to several users. Mine is the UK Bundle version.
It seems a normal problem on different phones. Usually, it will be solved when we change an offical USB cable. Or if your computer and your phone are in the same network, you can also try WiFi connecting. A third-party tool like Coolmuster Android Assistant allows us to do that. With its help, we can do that data transfer via WiFi connecting directly.
use adb push/pull commands much better.
I have the same problem in Linux, enabling USB debugging in developer options sometimes solves it. Very flakey however, its 10 years since I had as much trouble connecting a phone to a PC
