[Q] Is there a master link to stop Verizon's forced install. of 4.3? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note II and enjoyed it for 20 days before I saw it auto-updating and I stopped it mid-stream. Then I let it (where it still remains) in Airplane mode.
I learned since that if the update from auto-update is done, 4.3's bootloader is no longer available and it can no longer be restored to 4.1.2.
I am learning terms and procedures to the best of my novice abilities, but I am still confused on how and IF I can keep my 'download-in-progess' GNII that is still 4.1.2 at 4.1.2.
Verizon and Samsung say absolutely not as you probably know and that it would be a forced installation and factory reset now or afterwards = 4.3.
SO , my question is:
is there a master link for this procedure (and a best ROM?!)
&
Also do all procedures to accomplish my goal of not updating to 4.3 involve rooting that would void the warranty as FAQ#19 states (? Or is there a non-rooting method?
[OK moderator, be kind as this is my 1st post!]

To stop the update you need to freeze an app called SDM 1.0. You will need to be rooted to do that. I guess you need to decide what direction you want to go in. If you want to unlock and flash roms then you need to do that now, before it updates. If you don't want to do that you can update and stay stock. Just be aware that if you update to 4.3 there is no going back. You can root 4.3 but you cannot unlock the bootloader.

Thank you. I see that xda's FAQ #19 says:
"Q19: Can Verizon scan my phone to see if it is rooted?
There are security features on the VZW servers that can block rooted phones from access. Know that when calling Customer Service, they can actively search your phone and see what version of Android Software you are running."
SO: Question>>> Does it not make sense to root since Verizon might actively search phone and shut me out since I did not do their forced installation?
Perhaps the answer is at best "maybe" since there are members here for sure that have rooted this and not been cut off by Big Red Verizon?
Thank you for the reply. I will look up the info. on that 1.0 program. I will prefer being rooted when I find the proper process (here is superior than youtube vids)
but the possibility of Verizon blocking phone if they can legally makes it illogical to purse rooting, unless I am missing something.

That is false. Verizon customer service cannot scan your phone. They do not know if you are rooted. Even if they did, they are not going to cancel your service. They want your monthly payment. If all of us on here have rooted several phones and still have service, don't you think that info you found is false? And if you do believe it to be true, why worry about taking the 4.3 OTA?

If you really think that you will want to root your device eventually then now is the time to do it so you can update when you would like to. Adam Outlet has a step by step method that sounds scaryer than it is, just read throughly and you'll be fine. Good luck in which ever way you decide.

[Q] What to do next?

Just last night I managed to root my Xperia X10a AT&T brand, I got Superuser Permission, Terminal Emulator, Titanium Backup and Busybox.
My current Firmware is 1.6, Basebrand Version is 1.1.32, Kernel Version is 2.6.29-rel, Build Number is R2CA016.
I've browsed through the forums for about two hours now and still don't understand anything about the terminology here, so I haven't done anything beyond this and was wondering what to do next. So what would be recommended to do now? I know I should probably remove the AT&T bloatware and upgrade to a higher firmware, but I'm not sure how and which methods are safe. s:
(Yes, this is really noobie to ask but I don't understand anything.)
I was in the same boat as you a couple of weeks ago and was able to determine everything that I needed in order to get to 2.1.
Is it that big of a deal to get to 2.1? No. It isn't.
I haven't really gained anything except for 5 pages of crap on my desktop instead of the 3 that came with 1.6.
If you don't upgrade right away and decide to wait for the upgrade from SonyEriccson, kudos... there is far less risk.
If you still want to upgrade, almost everything you need is discussed right here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=825201
I read through that entire thread before even downloading one of the files required in order to upgrade.
I suggest you read the entire thread as well.
Thanks for the link.
I have another question, how would I allow my x10a to use unknown source app? AT&T doesn't allow it on their phones.
Navigate to Settings on your phone and select Applications.
You should find what you need there....

AT&T doesn't let you change it on their phones. s:
Or am I supposed to do this after upgrading?
Um.... that isn't true. I have an AT&T phone and never had a problem with it.
I took a screenshot of what I mean, but I need 8 posts to link to it here so I'll PM it to you.

Read my post below
Lan, you are correct that if you have an AT&T branded phone, you cannot load non-market apps. What Bul is not understanding is that Bul either bought an unlocked phone from say..ebay and is using ATT as their provider, or Bul updated to 2.1 which unbrands your phone unblocking you from ATT's control. Since ATT never released 2.1 it is impossible for Bul to have 2.1 and still have an ATT branded phone.
There is a lot more performance and future updates, other than bloatware, that comes with 2.1. I can guarantee you there are very few people wanting to go back to 1.6 after having 2.1. ATT has stated they may never update, and why would they? Unless you know you can update and unbrand yourself here at xda, you have no choice but to buy a new phone for the new technology. Expecting to keep getting updates for a phone that has a life cycle of 2 years doesn't make financial sense for the manufacturers or service providers.
Most of the stuff you'll find in these forums these days revolves around 2.1. READ..READ..and READ the forums. A couple weeks ago I was as clueless as you. It can be a lot of fun taking control of your device.
Go here to update and unbrand your phone, so you'll have the latest (at least for Xperia X10) software and you'll break free from ATT blocking you from non-market apps. Then root and you will be able to remove all the bloatware giving you more space and a faster phone

Loss of IMEI

Hello to all at XDA, this is my first post so please go easy. On the developers thread for JB on the S3 some people are reporting loss of IMEI after flashing a ROM. What isn't clearly being stated is what is the resultant effect. Does loss of IMEI resultant in a bricked phone?, d
or does it just mean that you would not be able to get a warranty repair but in all other respects the phone works albeit with an immature no guarantees ROM?
Not technically bricked as far as I know. Instead your phone basically turns into a media player. You have no longer access to your cell provider which means you cant make or receive calls/text messages. You won't be able to use data.
For example, its basically an iPhone turning into an iPod touch
I would recommend staying away from flashing anything atm until the guys over here at xda or other place that use their spare time to come up with a solution or conclusion on whether or not IMEI can be recovered

Inter crew, thanks for explaining all that, as an additional question regarding your advice to wait until the IMEI issue is identified, I am in the UK in the 3 network and own a 3 branded S3, my phone is rooted, and I have used Titanium to remove TW pre installed applications that I do not use such as ChatOn, but the ROM is the original stock ROM, my follow up question, when 3 eventually issue a JB update will my phone get it in its current state? Thanks for any answer you give
I seriously doubt it. All of the other phones that I have owned have never taken an update after rooting and freezing apps. This is pure speculation on my part but I would say not able to update.

That doesn't surprise me, would removal of root and reinstall of the removed apps on this original ROM allow me to update?

probably but it might just easier to backup using titanium and then Odin back to stock if there are Odin packages for your device..
that's how I always got my SGS back to stock for anything when required

Not true. MyS3 was rooted when att pushed their last ota. And my captivate was rooted when they pushed the froyo update to it. But, that was on a stock Rom. Most custom roms remove the option to check for software updates.
MrHaley, thanks for weighing in, from your perspective do you think its necessary for me to reinstall the removed apps (they were backed up on Titanium) to enable my S3 to receive updates on its resident stock rom ?

You actual have two options:
1. Keep root, wait for devs to fix the issue, and then wait for the devs to improve the JB update for the S3(probably won't come will Q4-Q1(2013) anyway.
Or
2. Reinstall every stock app you deleted, froze, etc...Then you have to wait for the next OTA.
I'm hard pressed to actually recommend unrooting, since that practically goes against the whole purpose of being on XDA. IF they announce the JB update before the Devs fix the IMEI bug, then i would say unroot. However if they fix it by month's end then it would be worth the wait--I trust the devs here for than the ones making the updates. They tend to be significantly slower, no OC, Carrier-IQ, fewer patches, updates are less frequent than xda, and they come with Touchwiz.

S4 Security

Updated my phone to 4.3 today and afterwards I got a notification about security. While viewing the details of the agreement I see that it is to enable automatic updating. I do not want this as I do not want another update. I plan on rooting this s4 as soon as one is available. Unfortunately I am having to type in my account pin every time I unlock my phone. Any way around this?
Thanks for any help.
You should have done some reading before updating... for one thing there already is a method to keep root if going to 4.3 and the Knox security "features" are pretty well known right now. There is also a security popup bug that Samsung is aware of and it's just something you have to deal with until it's patched. Since you are already on 4.3 there is a method to root but not everyone is convinced it's safe to use.

Thanks for the reply! I am aware I should have done some research. I previously had a thunderbolt that was rooted. Only so that I could use wifi tether. I use roughly 40gb a month via my wifi.. needless to say It is needed! This update blocked free wifi teather so now i will be rooting.
I will wait until It is proven safe.. or atleast thought to be by the majority of users. Thanks again.

[Q] Upgrade to 4.4.2 and the future of unlocking the bootloader

I've read most of the posts on here, but all of them seem to be concerned with keeping root. Really I don't even know if this is a question that can be answered since I know the bootloader is still locked. I don't really care about root, the only thing that I would REALLY like to do is install CyanogenMod, which isn't an option at the moment. Given that, I'm thinking about taking the 4.4.2 update so I can have access to a lot of the new features, and get this annoying "Software update ready to install" message off of my screen.
The thing that worries me is that, if I do take this and the bootloader does get unlocked in the future, what are the chances this will affect my ability to use that unlock? For example, lets say an exploit is found that allows MK2 and previous bootloaders to be unlocked, but not NC5 (I believe that's the new version).
I think the question can be answered if anyone knows if the update changes or adds new security to the bootloader? If it does, then it may affect a future update. If it doesn't, then an unlock for one should work for the other right?
Like I said, I don't need or use root, but should I worry about rooting it before updating? From what I read, I can root MK2 and keep that root after updating, but I won't be able to root once I update to NC5. The only reason I would want it is, again, if it would be necessary for a future bootloader unlock.
Like I said, I know this unlock is only hypothetical, but maybe someone that knows more about it than me can extrapolate from past experience and requirements.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
deleted
You can upgrade to nc5 with keeping the mk2 bootloaders if you dont take the ota
You got a very slim chance of either 4.3 or 4.4 being unlocked. Of course if you want to put yourself in the best possible position, stay on 4.3 since you can always upgrade to 4.4 if something did happen.

Root your phone using SafeRoot then grab Titanium Backup from play store and freeze "SDM" . for good measure you can freeze " FWUgrade" too but SDM should do it.

Too late This morning I was unlocking my phone and hit the stupid install now popup that defaults to the top of everything when my phone wakes up.
The good news is the new Google Camera is amazing and I'm really no worse off. The bad news will come if anyone ever finds a way to unlock the bootloader that only works with previous versions
Thanks for the help everyone.

Well there is a downgrade method that partially puts your phone back to mk2 after taking the nc5 ota. You'd be able to have root and SafeStrap again. It's in Android Development. I haven't done it myself but hear it's not to hard to do

[Q] Fire HDX 7 - Is it safer to flash Roms and Root now?

First, I apologize if this ins't the right area but it seems like a General question.
I recently bought a Kindle Fire HDX 7" and have had it about a week now. With all the Amazon Bloat and lack of Google apps I need more out of it. I am not a beginner with flashing roms and such, my HTC One is Rooted, CyanogenModed, and has a boot loader, anyways...
I have spent the last couple days reading up on the ways to do it on the HDX 7 and heard many warnings and bricks of this device, but some of the posts are a little bit older. I can't really tell which method of Rooting/Flashing is the safest out of all the different ones. My current OS version is 13.3.2.1. Using the Safestrap looks pretty easy and from what I understand is that even if you do brick it you can recover the original?
My question is... Is it any safer to flash a Rom lately (due to the updating problems?), and how safe is just rooting it for the time being? Also, what method/tools would you suggest to use? I don't like the FireOS and would like to get it close the a standard Android and/or CyanogenMod.
Thanks for your time.

actually you came just in time and have the right firmware and place go to the development section and start reading we now have a brand new recovery that bypasses the security on our bootloader. I would advise reading reading these threads thoroughly. And your particular software is rootable with the existing utilities we have in the development section also. There has been a lot of development very recent keep in mind they are first version may be buggy but the utility .94 can get you rooted and safe from updates until you can do more research. And get your new recovery in place.
Thanks, by what you said I am guessing the internal workings haven't been figured out quite yet. I will head over to the development boards and see if I can find. Sadly I updated to FireOS 4.5 not knowing that there wasn't software to to roll back for versions above 1X but read that I can call Amazon and have it rolled back so no worries.

I actually just got it rolled back, I read that people saying it doesn't happen anymore, but the very nice tech lady down graded me from 4.5.1 to 13.3.2.7. She stayed on the phone until it was completly reset. =) Now I should be able to root it easily with towelroot.
I was being pretty damn charming to her though, lol
I'm sure they don't want to and won't do it most of the time, but I is still 100% possible on their end, it's just wether they want to or not. I had a pretty decent story too, not just 'its slow and buggy'

after rolling back a couple of them it helps if you say that it was on version 3 then you updated to the latest one then make up some plausable combination of symptoms for example the one i went with is that my device restarts alone every 20 minutes or so and almost no apps work and then proceed to say that you were happy with how it was before it was updated
EDIT:also to note that i have yet to have them refuse me a single time through chat

I have just been reading about several people that have been rejected and why. There is a rumor that they gave it to their developers only and their technicians will go through your device logs and decide whether or not it is appropriate. Again rumor. I do not need roll back at least so far I have stuck with the old software all year...I just hate having to mess with trying to keep the OTA blocked. I just want them to take me off the ota push servers.
