[Q] Need help Identifying HTC Ones defected cameras.... - T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

If you wan't to skip the back story, just head down to the problem and question, thanks.
Let me start of by saying that I've loved HTC since the Sensation saved me from years of being brainwashed and enslaved into using iPhones.
But, It's actually more of a love/hate relationship... During the year or two in which I used the Sensation 4G (loved it) - I went through about four different ones due to them always having some sort of silly hardware issue.
I've been using the HTC One (m7) the month after its initial release and it is by far the best phone I've ever had in terms of feel, quality and features. It's pretty much an all around perfect phone.
Anyway, that being said... In search of a solution - I written my current problem below which has been haunting me relentlessly.

The problem: During my time with the HTC One, I've had to get it replaced twice due to the camera sensor eventually giving into the heart and becoming fault. Leaving me with an horrible blue, purple, orange, red, etc... tint in almost all of my semi low light photos
Question: I've heard from a rep in the past that HTC delayed on the release for the Max until the camera issue was resolved.
It's been some time since I was made aware of that and the max has been out for a while now as well so I'm a bit confused or maybe I just don't want to believe that my beloved HTC is continuing to ship faulty cameras after being aware of the problem.
Anyway, Is there any specific starting production date from which they actually stopped using the crappy sensors vulnerable to the heat generated by the phone it self?
If so - Is there anyway to tell... for ex. serial number, revision? Pretty much any liable distinction, I'm a bit frustrated + a little desperate since I can't seem to find one my self. I would like a solution to this before replacing into number three. Sigh.
T-Mobile versions by the way. I've also tried all the updates, custom roms, diy fixes etc... nothing works.
Help is greatly appreciated, thank you. Save me. lol

Camera version is "st vd6869(1.0) cinesensor 2013-04-12"
If I turn off all the lights, I just get a pitch-black image. Leave a 60-watt table lamp on, point at the wall, and there doesn't seem to be a tint other than the yellowish light put out by the bulb. However, image resolution leaves quite a lot to be desired. Zooming in a bit more than a fourth of the way produces noticeable grain of all sorts of colors.
What does it say when you open /sys/android_camera/sensor ?

HTC Radar camera with weird effect

While messing around with my phone, I noticed that in certain conditions, using the camera would result in the middle of the image being saturated and the periphery desaturated.
It was a subtle effect that I only observed because I was on my couch playing with my phone. Did anyone else notice this same effect? I tried it out with another smartphone (HTC Sensation) and it did a similar thing.
Looks like it is infrared spillover. Try covering the flash on the back and see if it produces the same photo. It is probably used to focus the camera.
Happens to me too. I able to reduce it by shooting the pictures by taping the screens and saturation levels at normal. Avoid shooting white photos right after shooting a heavily saturated photo.
I think that's an HTC thing. The HD2 had it pretty bad, but was lessened with a hotfix. My TouchPro has that too. Suprised to still see that on their latest devices.

Hi, I never see this on my Radar? You said in certain condition, you can reproduce it. Would you mind to tell me how do you do it? Cheers
It's a software issue - HTC had the same troubles with the HTC HD2 and the HTC HD7 - both were remedied with a firmware update. On both phones it showed up as a pink blotch too.

Sorry for the late reply, I thought the thread had run its course and I usually don't check the forums.
Anyways, I really only notice it while looking at a white wall illuminated by strong incandescent lighting, though I haven't tried it in a variety of other settings yet. I noticed it by chance really, while I was sitting on the couch playing with the camera settings. In normal day to day settings I never notice it.
Judging by the other responses here, I suppose I'm not alone, but the effect really doesn't bother me much. Also as others have noted, it seems to be related to an HTC bug.
Even I experience the same problem on my Radar. I rebooted the phone a few times but the pink blotch still showed up. It's not showing up since last few days but comes once in a while. I hope HTC fixes this issue in the next update.

[Q] EVO LTE Screen Flex/LCD Ripple Issues?

Unfortunately my OCD kicked in and I returned my first EVO LTE as it had peace of dust under the screen and slight light leakage at the bottom. Other than that my screen never had any flex or ripple issues and I am regretting that I took it in for an exchange!! My 1st exchange unit had a pixel that was stuck in the on position and had seriously bad LCD ripple effect. Took that back to a different Best Buy and the second exchange also has this same LCD ripple effect. It is most noticeable on black screens if you lightly press around the sides like you are scrolling up and down a web page. It can also be scene on the home screen. My question is, how many people have this issue? I am crossing my finger and hoping I can get a unit again that doesn't as I truely am pleased with the other aspects of this phone and can deal with the other small little hickups of a new product launch.
I have none of this.
my OG Evo had this after I replaced the digitizer. i assumed i did something wrong since the one before it did not. no issues on my lte
Limited sample of responses so far, but seems to be looking more positive than I expected it to be!
Maybe I have a better chance of my next replacement not having this issue than I thought! I hope it was just a bad batch for this area and the next shipment will be better!
Had same ripple issues
Hi..well I got my evo lte on a pre order. I ve had all the evos thru the last couple years and the LTE is a very good phone. I noticed the exact same thing,when I would gently push or tap on the screen it would have clothes of light that we're very bad,and on black screens that was even worse. I called sprint and they told me to go to a store to exchange it. I went to the store and the manager was awesome we sat down and he brought out 5 brand new EVO LTE s for us to try. At his amazement they all were as bad if not worse then mine on the ripple effect. I have a galaxy 2 touch and when we pushed on that screen no matter how hard it showed no signs of light bleeding or rippling at all. He didn't know what to tell me but did they say the screen on the htc should not do that at all and it might be a bad batch. To me it seemd the glass on the LCD screen didn't bond well with the glue they used,and when you pushed or tapped it would go down into the LCD screen. I know when you push directly on a LCD tv,computer screen it will give you the same similar effect. I called sprint and told them I was returning the phone and the lady in the return department told me she has had a few calls about people wanting to return the phone because of this issue. I really like the LTE,but couldn't put up with the screen issues. I am going to wait till the galaxy 3 comes out and also by then check out the EVO lte again to see if the problem has been fixed.
Sigh first off mine does this but I have to apply more force then is needed for the phone to register the touch. Second off WHY are you pushing with any kind of pressure to even do that? Now if you're just touching the LCD and it is doing this I understand. Also even in the vid it looks like more force is being applied as needed but not as much as I have to apply? That being said if you think sgsiii will be better well it will cause it doesn't use a LCD lolol.
Edit I think this is to have gorilla glass 2 which is thinner so chances of this happening are going to be common I'd assum of you push down on the screens lol.

From my experience I am not applying any more pressure than I would use normally. That is the only reason I noticed it. I was typing in my numerical pass code on a black screen and saw the ripples. I then did further investigation. The video might not be the best reproduction of how you get the problem under normal use, but it does show what the problem looks like. My first phone I actually used more pressure on trying to figure out what the dust spot was and never had this issue occur so had no clue what I would run into with an exchange. This is a production issue on some LTE's and One X's. The below comment was posted in an article on the One X in April. I just think some phones are much more noticeable than others and who knows what this issue will turn into over the life of the phone.

Ok well then that's a diff story and I'm wondering if it due to the glue not curing by the time it got to you... Or a lack of glue. Since the glue has apparently been a problem this time around for HTC lol. And glad to know you won't defect to the sgsiii. The one thing I don't understand is why Samsung uses the gn as a beta for their sgs line. Same screen on gn and sgsiii but its to be slightly better.(only cause they used the gn as a test)

Yep, glue on this current phone has the screen slowly getting white. Started out kind of yellow and now most of it is white with the bottom section still a little yellow. Going to give it till Friday to see if anything improves and if not I will test out the new shipment at Best Buy and try my hand at another exchange.
Update:
Went back to Best Buy and we opened up and looked at 5 different phones and EVERY single one of them had this issue. Some worse than others, but it was still apparent.
Not giving up though, trying a different store today to see how that works. I know my very first phone did NOT have this issue, just had a small speck of dust and slight light leakage..... I SOOO wish I had that phone back! Should have never returned it.
Update on my OCD - LCD Flex Issue:
5 Different Best Buys in two different states. Every phone I have tested had this issue to some extent (18 different phones tested). Some worse than others. I now believe my original phone had the issue, but was just less noticeable. Also, the screens normally do start out with more of a yellow tint from the glue. This mostly goes away after a few days of high brightness use, but sometimes a slight yellow band at the bottom remains. I think HTC doubled up the glue to help with the light leakage issues they are known for in the past.
Current phone has white balance closer to a pure white than a light yellow. (no yellow band at bottom either. This screen still has the flex issue but needs medium/medium heavy pressure to see on a black screen. I should never have to press that hard on anything to ever notice it. I am almost perfectly happy now, only bad thing is it does have one stuck pixel at the top of the screen (can't be seen on Pink, Red, Blue or Black, but is apparent on Yellow, Light Blue, Green, White and Gray). Would have never noticed it without the dead pixel test. I would rather have that than have it sensitive to the flex issue and any yellow tint to my white screen.
So, if you have not noticed the flex issue, then DO NOT look for it or try to reproduce it. You will most likely find it. Not a show stopper and should not be reproduced under normal use (Except for the few bad eggs that are really sensitive).

HTC Amaze Camera faint dark bands, ICS?

I've noticed ever since I've upgraded to ICS (could be completely irrelevant of the upgrade.. but I never noticed it before today) that using the Camera on my HTC Amaze has these really faint dark bands.. they are only really noticeable on a solid-color surface in low lighting..
It's very obvious when taking the pictures (on the screen/viewfinder, because I can see them remain static as I move the camera around)
I'm just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this or if it's a sudden defect in my phone's CCD.. I pay for insurance but the lines/bands are so faint and barely noticeable that it's hard to justify $130 to fix this... It just seems so weird because I take such good care of my Amaze.
I've tried restarting the phone, I've tried different camera apps, I've tried adjusting settings manually (resolution, ISO, etc) they appear in all. They also appear in videos. I've tried cleaning the sensor both with the case on and off, no change.
Here are some examples of said "bands". I have no 'control' pictures to show but these are all pictures of a solid color surface.. they are very faint but definitely noticeable once you've noticed them.. it's really annoying and I can't figure out what the problem could be.
I've done extensive searching.. tried multiple keywords "bands" "faint black lines
really can't find any information about this problem, only thing I've found is a couple of threads on other forums for digital cameras.. but nothing that could help me solve this.
I know they are really really faint, but it's very noticeable on the screen when taking pictures of anything solid now, and in low lighting.
So, anyone have any idea? I could shoot for a replacement, but I'm just not sure if I'm willing to spend $130 when most pictures turn out just fine.
I'd also like to add that I rooted the phone and it's unlocked so I'm weary of going for the warrenty replacement (the phone is only a couple of months old). I'm afraid if I do a warrenty replacement with T-Mobile that HTC will come back with it being unlocked and not under warranty, and I'll have a $450 charge from T-Mobile waiting for me... if anyone has any experience with this sort of thing (utilizing warranty through T-Mobile's program with a rooted/unlocked phone) please let me know. I understand that T-Mobile will send you a replacement, while returning the phone to HTC.. but that's about it.
don't like to reply to my own posts but I take it nobody else has/is experiencing this issue? I keep thinking it's 'normal' for low light/solid color situations, but I'd really like to know if others experience the same thing.. if i'm being too picky?
If it's a faulty sensor i'd really like to start the process of getting a replacement, just curious, anyone?
I don't know if this helps, but I don't have that issue with my camera. Using stock app + modified .xml (eliminates compression adding quality)

Looks like something is up with the sensor then Really sucks.. still torn between going for the replacement ($130 deductible) or just keeping it.. you can't see it on ANY pictures, really.. only noticeable when looking at solid color surfaces in low lighting.. ugh

Going to try and throw Android Revolution or EnergyROM and see if that changes anything.. but I doubt it ;/
I think the question you have to ask yourself is "How often will I take pictures where there's a predominant solid color?"
If that would be, I'd say rarely. Then I would keep the phone.

[Q] 2nd device also faulty, camera app. not working. What do?

First I receive a device with brightness issues as stated here. After getting a new device and realizing the old device infact did have a brightness issue I was happy ...until I discovered the camera app. doesnt work!
It doesnt matter if I click on the physical button or the app. icon, it just slides back to the same screen. I tried downloading "Magic Camera", and when I open it, it says "Camera is not available on this device". Are there ANY solutions? I did try to restart phone, reset camera and factory reset, but nothing works.
If its not a hardware issue, the only issue I can guess of is an update. The old device (the one with brightness issues) had a bunch of updates when I first entered the store (+15), many of them were standard apps. (calender etc.), and maybe one of them was Camera, but I dont remember. Unfortunately when I enter the store now on the old device (after a factory reset, as im first shipping it back in a few days) it doesnt show that there are any updates, so maybe its running on an old camera version which works, or a new one and my new device just doesnt show the update for it.
Im really looking not to get another replacement as I already spent alot of $$$ on protection (zaggs on one and martin fields on the other....), and I just cant afford to buy them again, so any advice is appreciated.
Hardware fault, probably the cable isn't connected to the camera module etc.
Things get damaged in transit often, couriers throw stuff around like junk sometimes.

Yea, thats what I figured if it wasnt a software issue. Read some people opened their phones themselves and reconnected the cable, however those were older Lumia models where you could remove the cover, since 920 is shut I cant. Time for a 3rd device and a 3rd set of protection film. Oh, and a 3rd prayer that it wont be faulty.
3rd phone replacement also faulty with brightness. Now waiting for 4th replacement. Im beginning to believe many 920 owners have the brightness issue but just dont realize it, cause they dont have a 2nd device to compare with and just assume its how its supposed to look. Gonna get 4th and incase I need, a 5th replacement. If they're still faulty I will simply wait for other WP8 devices.

I have more than 35 Nokia Lumia 920 handset around me in the office, none of them had this issue.... the brightness. Let alone the Camera.
Where are you ordering your phone from if you don't mind telling ? and how much are you paying for it ?

Yes, you're right. Its all a hoax, because I love replacing phones 2 times a week, you got me. (HURR )
Its a phone dealer called Call Me, im not paying anything for the replacements as I demanded not to pay for shipping. I dont really care if you dont believe me, I had several people look at the phones side-by-side, and everyone has agreed that one is only what seems half as bright as the other (full brightness). The screen is completely "dark tinted". But if you dont have two to compare with (one faulty, one non-faulty), you will never even know the difference.
And you have your facts wrong my man, 2 had brightness issue, where as with one the camera doesnt work. I havent gotten 4 with brightness issue...
Im not blind, its easy to tell its faulty, and if only you could see it too you'd know not to post with such an ignorant attitude.

With all due respect, I find your arguments bipolar... You clearly don't understand what's been said on the forum you linked me to.
You say that if you don't have a flawless device next to you it's hard to tell the difference yet you contradicte yourself by saying it's easy to tell it's faulty.
Let me tell you that the camera issue is indeed defection. However, what you don't realize is that not all phones with identical model number have the same hardware inside. It all depends on the batch release.
I have been following this forum in the last 10 years and from my observation this is a common issue found everywhere. It was very common with the HTC HD2 and so.
When smartphone manufacture request Display,RAMs etc... and the vendor cannot deliver the quantity needed for production, the phone manufacture tend to consider another supplier.
THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU PHONE IS FAULTY AND IT SHOULD BE RETURNED.
I hope you understand that. Finding the perfect device is never gonna be easy. Some people complained about vibration rattle and had perfect display, some other complained about the yellow-green tinted softkey buttons with no vibration rattle and so on....
Keep returning your device and you will see no difference as long as the device delivered is from the same batch.
Also according to the thread you posted, it looks like the yellowish ( if that's what they said although they only noticed it when they compared it to another device ) display phone tend to have better buttons and no vibration rattle etc...
Even on my iMac 27" there is a 692 page thread related to the IPS screen on the apple forum posted by people complaining about the difference of colors between two identical 3000$ machines one with an LG display and the other with a Samsung one.
Keep posting your updates, I'd like to see where this thing is leading you to.
Small advice, if your next replacement is still "faulty" return the handset and go to a shopping center where you can try the device before buying it.
And to be fair, I've never had to return something 5 times. Twice is enough to tell that it's hopeless

Its easy to tell its faulty when they're side-by-side, is what im saying. Like I already mentioned earlier, the only reason I ever got the 1st replacement was because of the very yellow tinted buttons, and it then turned out the whole screen was affected (or a different batch release, if you want). If I hadnt read about it, how some people said they had pure white buttons, I probably wouldve just assumed its how it was meant to be and just kept it.
Even if its because of different hardware, or if its because they're faulty devices, im paying so much money for this phone that I dont see why I should be happy with a phone that only has around half the brightness. I dont mind getting phones replaced until I hit the right batch/non-faulty device, but I think the phone dealer does. They dont have physical stores so I cant go in and check first.
I already told them if its a problem, they can just let me know, and ill finder a different dealer.

The yellow-green tinted softkeys are not related to the display panel. Both are independant. My screen's as white as my older Xperia S at full brightness and even more than my L900. It's perfectly fine and I do work for the company. I could have exchanged it if it was. As said, I've seen dozens of Lumia 920 devices and all of them have yellow tinted softkeys.
Yellow tinted buttons are mainly due to the coating on the keys. It is not related to the display, if it was, brightness level would have changed the lightning level of the keys. Note that although keys may look yellowish-green, the white on the display itself is pure white.
All new batches coming have the yellow-green-blue tinted keys. It's mainly because at night, white bright keys could disturb and annoy you.
PS: I also like my device to be in perfect shape and worry about small details, but you are overdoing it.
Take my words for granted. The yellow softkey IS NOT a defect.

The yellow-green tinted softkeys are not related to the display panel. Both are independant. My screen's as white as my older Xperia S at full brightness and even more than my L900. It's perfectly fine and I do work for the company. I could have exchanged it if it was. As said, I've seen dozens of Lumia 920 devices and all of them have yellow tinted softkeys.
Yellow tinted buttons are mainly due to the coating on the keys. It is not related to the display, if it was, brightness level would have changed the lightning level of the keys. Note that although keys may look yellowish-green, the white on the display itself is pure white.
All new batches coming have the yellow-green-blue tinted keys. It's mainly because at night, white bright keys could disturb and annoy you.
PS: I also like my device to be in perfect shape and worry about small details, but you are overdoing it.
Take my words for granted. The yellow softkey IS NOT a defect.

I dont mind the yellow tinted buttons, its more relaxing for your eyes at night. However, both phones that had issues with brightness, also had the yellow tinted buttons, whereas the device where the brightness was better, the buttons were white. If its not because its faulty then so be it.
I do worry about small details (such as dust under screen and scratches upon arrival), however I do not mind the yellow tinted buttons. I do however mind the big difference there is in the brightness, and that is why im getting replacements. Its as if Nokia decided to go with a low-end panel when they ran out of the good ones.

There should be no dust under the screen nor scratches upon arrival. Never.
Make sure the seller is not sending you refurbished units. If you can return it back and order from a trusted online seller like amazon or ebay whatsoever outside your country then that would be a better option.

And there hasnt been either, only the brightness and camera. The thing is im buying the phone, and paying it over a 2 year contract. I dont have the money right now to pay the entire thing. If I did I would get the grey model, but im getting a white (they dont have grey at Call Me). I can pay the whole thing later this year, as I dont wanna pay it for 2 years, but for now thats all I can (im a college attendant)
Received 4th phone today and decided it would be my last, if it also were to have a faulty screen/"from-the-bad-batch". The screen however, thankfully, is bright and good. Again its easy to tell with them side-by-side, its like night and day. The buttons on the device is however with the yellow tint. As mentioned earlier, I do not mind this, espcially in low-light situations. It is however - in my opinion - ugly, simply ugly.
The phone I had where the camera didnt work had white buttons, it matched the device, but oh well, im not gonna ask for yet another replacement and risk another faulty/bad-batch screen.
Another user on XDA could in this thread also confirm the colors on his device was not right. I really think this issue should have a sticky thread explaining it, if only people could see the difference, they would want a new device.
Unfortunately now that my new device with the good screen also has yellow tinted buttons, it can no longer be used as an official way of telling whether or not a device is faulty, so as of now only comparing with other phones will be able to tell.

HTC One rant!

The following is my thoughts on our (my wife and I) newly acquired HTC One phones. Thoughts regarding the big, glaring problem would be appreciated.
In the past week and a half, I found two killer deals on the HTC One (64gb) models, which I bought for my wife and I (second hand). At only $280 a piece, how could I pass it up??
Both my wife and I really love the look of these phones. Ours are matching silver models, running stock (Sense 5.0, Android 4.3) on Straight Talk using the AT&T SIMs. The beautiful aluminum finish, gorgeous 1080p 4.7" screen, BoomSound, and the best Sense UI ever! Fast too; the Snapdragon 600 and 2gb RAM really make this thing fly! I don't even mind the BlinkFeed, and other bloatware too much. High quality construction just oozes from this device.
After hearing about the amazing "ultrapixel" camera, I was excited about trying out the camera. To my dismay, this camera has been the source of my frustration. On both phones, the main camera refuses to focus. No amount of cleaning, Tap-to-focus, different modes, nor different camera apps have helped with this problem. On my wife's phone, you can gently tap the back of the phone, and it will focus suddenly for a few seconds to a few minutes, before totally unfocusing again. With my phone, no amount of tapping will make it focus at all. The only focus I can get on my phone, is on objects within about 2 feet of the lens (and, no, I an not using the Macro setting in the options, not the video camera focus lock). Further, if there is a low light situation, there is a lot of "blue noise"that gets into the picture. The front facing camera is fine, though.
I have Googled this problem, and it seems to be a pretty common problem (camera blurriness/bad low light conditions). HTC has acknowledged this problem to some degree, saying a software patch will be released soon. This problem has been ongoing since the phone was released, though, and I just don't think HTC gives a damn.
Any thoughts on this? Except for the camera, this is a fantastic device! So utterly disappointed with the camera, that I an considering just selling it, and getting a different phone. Help would be appreciated!
Sorry to hear your issue. I can say at least for me I do not have the camera issues your describing. Perhaps the camera issues were why they sold the phone.

Perhaps, but there is ALOT of folks out there with camera issues. HTC has admitted in varying stages that there are issues with the camera, but yet they have done really NOTHING to fix them.
In my humble opinion, I believe this is a hardware defect. Defect, as in many, many from the factory line were pushed with this issue. My thinking is, is that there is some kind of focusing mechanism piece in the lens setup, that is either getting hung up on something, or was made with such poor quality, that its either breaking, or just simply not doing its function. This thought is based on my wife's phone, as I can knock the back of the phone near the lens, and all of a sudden it will work for a bit.
Of course, this isn't the case on all the HTC phones, which makes me think something is just getting hung up in the hardware lens piece. I would bet that is why HTC doesn't want to recall all those phones, as they made it nearly impossible to open up the phone (I am sure its a royal b*tch for them to get into as well!). Plus, with their less than stellar track record, this would only serve up to hurt their reputation more, and show how vulnerable the "ultrapixel" camera really is.
I know the blue tint is a acknowledge issue but your case is the first I have heard about focusing issues. Either way I do hope you can get it fixed. I would imagine it is still under manufactures warranty so try with att or by contacting htc
