a Question About Firmware - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Guys ,
I have the international galaxy s3 version ,
i'm now runing cm 10.1 with googy max kernel but i want to revert back to stock , but when i go to sammobile and choose my country from the list (Egypt) the latest version is 4.1.2
so my question is , can i choose another country like UK for Example and flash their 4.3 firmware or not ,
my dad also has a stock s3 which updated itself to 4.3 OTA , so can i download any version and flash it or not
although can you tell me what is the latest one i know its 4.3 but the one with the latest modem and csc and stuff as i cant read the firmware letters and searched for a describtion and didn't find any info (XXELLA , XXEMA2 , .. etc )
another question , is there any mod that switches between 2g/3g networks , like the one in cyangoenmod that switches between network types with one click , i searched but all i can come up with is the play store shourtcuts to network setting
last simple question , what is the best kernel for 4.3 ??
Sorry for long post and questions

For your rom question: yes, you can flash any unbranded rom (GNA7 build is considered the latest one), but if you're planning to root your device, then I suggest flashing a custom rom (there are a lot of GNA7 builds available in 'android dev' thread)- they also come with a variety of modems to choose from (I personally prefer the MK6 modem)
About kernel- there is no 'best' one, it depends on personal requirements...

If you're going back to a stock ROM, then the 2G/3G settings can be changed in the Mobile Data options, I can't remember the exact name of the options as it's been a while since I even looked at it, but you'll know when you see it, hope this helped.

[Q] Rooting a French SGS II and keeping SFR apps

Hi,
I have an SFR version of the SGS II, I would like to
Root my device
Unlock it
Upgrade to a faster better ROM with Hebrew support.
I am new to SGS and I want to understand a few issues. I understand that Samsung releases ROM's for different areas in the world and that they are described in a coded manner in the ROM version. what i don't understand is
(Q.1) Will any version of the ROM work on any version of SGS II ? (might be a stupid question, but i want to make sure)
I understand that burning a different ROM version on my device might void the warranty, so I need to keep a backup of the original version.
(Q.2) where do I find the CSC of the my SFR ROM ?
(Q.3) I want to keep the ability to connect to all SFR Wifi hotspots for FREE it is done from an app installed on the device probably by the CSC, Do i need to backup the SFR apps i want from the original ROM and reinstall them on the new ROM, or could I simply find the SFR CSC, and install it once i'm done upgrading, rooting and unlocking my device ?
Can someone recommend me a good ROM version along with modem version ?
that supports Hebrew characters (right to left languages) ?
This are the details of my device,
PDA::KE4
PHONE: KE1
CSC: KE4 (SFR)
Any help would be much, much appreciated like i said i am new to this device.
Thanks, in advance.

Hi mate, since I have a SFR SGS2 too, I think I can help you
Q1 : Yes, you might want to go to Intratech's topic in the Dev section to search the ROM you want. You can also try various custom ROMs from the same section
Q2 : here
Q3 : You can simply redownload SFR apps from the market

Hi again and thank you for your answers, I have some complementary questions
1. in the ROM official forum intratech is posting KE4 rom and stock rom whats is the difference between them ?
2. Does the ROM include the Firmware + modem + CSC.
3. how do i extract the CSC and burn it, after i burn a new firmware +modem ?
4. from the list of ROMs I can burn you suggested (in the DEV forum) which one is more suitable for SFR and how do i determine that the modem version is suitable ?
5. i read somewhere in the forum that changing the firmware and rooting looses the APN - the settings for Internet and specific operator configuration. so my question would be in case i can not burn or apply the CSC of SFR after i change my firmware how do i back up this information in order to make sure that the phone doesn't loose functionality's later ?
6. I don't understand what *#1234# does ?
Thanks and sorry for all the questions, like i said i am new to this
Hey guys I recently bought an SGS II SFR (Forfait blocké), can I root it and install custom ROM on it, or I should Unlock it first?
And what ROM do you use?
Thanks in advance.

First of all, we're not geeks; we're technical enthusiasts!
Second of all, as JJe said correctly, the button was probably removed by the carrier, you are at.
Third of all, you can always download frimware from here incase you don't have the OTA button
*OTA = Over the Air

I very much doubt your phone is broken/defect or what ever, I'd say go to sammobile.com/firmware and download the latest firmware you can find
Or, if you never have, try flashing a custom ROM, they're definitly worth a try! We've got some developers here, that should be prominent!

I am guessing you are with orange. Or maybe t-mobile as they are both one now. Your phone is not faulty and it is your service provider (orange/ t-mobile) who have disabled the updates option. I am in the same situation. You can either ring your service provider to give you an unbranded phone or flash the rom as suggested.
yeah, just flash some unbranded ROM available for you phone, I did exacly this and now I am FREE of carriers logos and other stuff, they should't control our lives, dam operators..

It doesn't really matter what ROM you use. The only difference is, is that you then have all the carrier crap on your phone. If you can, find the latest version for Europe/No carrier and flash that.
I mean, I live in Germany and I flash the European ones alll the time on other phones, because their fed up of all that bloatware on their phones.
But, I'd suggest trying out some custom ROMs. Personally, I'm using CarHD ROM v6 for my Galaxy S 4 (I9505), it use TWiz, but it's themed. Looks real awesome, though.
On my GS III, I at first had stock Telekom Germany, then I flashed Android Revolution HD - Wasn't happy with it at all after a week of use, constant lag and battery life was terrible (Please don't use this as an argument not to flash the ROM. The lagginess and battery life is relative, as it differes from user to user, as we all have different habbits of using our phones!), then I had Paranoid Android, CM10 and so on.. The last ROM I had on it was MIUI. I stuck with that until I got my new phone - Which was about half a year.
So, if you want my personal opinion, go check out MIUI, whether you choose the CM-based version or the official download from http://miuiandroid.com - It's your choice. In all the time I was using that ROM, using it rather heavily, my battery lasted just over a day and I never had any form of lag, whether it be in games like Hill Climb Racing or graphics-intense games like Asphalt 6. They all worked perfectly fine.

Samsung i9300 not registered on network after update

I bought a used factory network unlocked S3 i9300
it had 4.1 , i downloaded 4.3 from Samsung-updates.com and i flashed the stock recovery and stock firmware using odin (i downloaded the first one "GT-I9300 NZC I9300XXUGNJ2" (i think because my phone is not tied to any network operator i cold choose any firmware)
i followed this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/fix-s3-to-factory-unroot-stock-recovery-t2323847
every thing went smooth and good now i have android 4.3 but the problem is that when i call a number i get not registered on network
i'am confused why is this happening ?
i had seen some pages on the web that say root the device and install custom recovery then flash a modem file...
i dont want to root my s3 , and why the hell it is not working and i'am using Samsung stock firmware why do i have to flash a 3rd party stuff to make calls working !!!
note: the IME after update is correct
