[Q] TWRP 2.6.3.1 jftlevzw does not work with mk2? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have researched and read through about 20 of the last pages here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768142&page=83
I've also tried this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2571171
I still have no luck. I installed through the Goo.im app, reboot into recovery and all i get is downloading.. don't turn off target. I rebooted with the volume down button and chose cancel and it restarts fine now. I do have mk2. Some people said they have issues, and to be honest, do i even need twrp if i don't care if i have to re-flash stock mk2? I've already done it twice through odin because of trying to install roms/messing up my phone. This seemed easier when i had a bionic. I changed roms weekly on that thing, never having an issue.
Also, why doesn't anyone post what versions these things are compatible with? I never see anything like twrp 2.6.3.1 recovery compatible with "xxx version and previous only!" so i try stuff and crap doesn't work. I've been trying to install carbon rom and it appears to be a no go.

Yeah you gotta lot of research to do. Look at any of the stickies in our forum or the other 1,000 people who made threads in this section asking what you're asking.

Found a sticky that i did not see before.
So it appears that because i recently got this phone i'm kinda screwed when it comes to an AOSP rom without a custom recovery which isn't possible at this time. Well damn, that sucks. I guess i'm stuck with crappy touchwiz related roms. Ugh.

Yeah it's a crappy situation. Right now the closest you can get is flashing the Foxhound port. It's AOSP themed. Also Eclipse is AOSP themed.

Yeah. On MK2 Verizon locked bootloaders and you can only use safestrap ypu csnt use TWRP. It sucks I tried and bricked my phone before lol

Can't even begin to guess how many people have come on here after they did that.
XDA has all the answers people just need to read more before they fiddle with a $600 phone lol
Verizon S4
Liquid Smooth 4.4
Sprint S4
Negalite 4.4

No kidding. After bricking a friend's phone, due to not doing my homework ahead of time, I realized the importance of being thoroughly well informed about what you're doing before jumping in and messing with this stuff. XDA has so much information and so much help available if you look around a little bit. Some things may take some searching. I can't thank the community enough for all the help they've been in my endeavors.
Sucks there's no custom recoveries for the locked bootloader S4s. If you install Safestrap, give Hyperdrive a try. I'm on MDK and have run several different ROMs, AOSP and TW. I always find myself coming back to Hyperdrive. I'm on 14 now and it works great. So while it's not the answer you're hoping for, try using Hyperdrive. It allows you to pick and choose elements to install, some of which are ported from AOSP, and you could use a different launcher to give it a little less of a TW feel.

Is I545VRUEMK2 the build or baseband? Developer phones have I545OYU (I545VRU is for retail S4's). Developer phones only had the following builds on them: I545OYUAMDK (original), I545OYUEMJ7 and I545OYUEMK2. If your build is one of these then you are ok and someone loaded the retail mode/radio onto it. You can visit my thread which Mistertac referenced and flash different modem and/or radios.
Also, if you want to double check to see whether your phone is still in developer mode, load the phone into Download mode: Power off the phone, then hold the Power Button and Volume down together. When the green warning screen comes up, press Volume Up to accept and enter download mode. The text in the upper left corner of the screen in download mode should list: "Mode: Developer" - small and gray text. To reboot just hold the Power Button until the phone turns off then hold power again to boot back up.
Keep me posted!
Edit: Also the only recoveries I can run with my I545OYUEMK2 DevS4 are Philz Touch Recovery and SafeStrap v3.71 from HashCode which is TWRP based. TWRP by itself boots me directly into Download Mode (was able to load TWRP while on I545OYUAMDK). Assuming your phone is still a Developer Edition device, if you ever have any issues with recoveries putting you into download mode, just use Odin and my thread to download the necessary file to restore boot and/or recovery.

Whomever told you that the boot loader couldn't be locked is mistaken. If you flash a non-developer bootloader onto a developer phone, it now has a locked bootloader. Unfortunately, there's no way to undo that until (unless) the developers figure out how to unlock the bootloader.
Install the "Phone INFO * Samsung *" app from the play store and open it. What does it say for the Bootloader Version?
There's also a "Phone Info" app that can display the bootloader version as well.

Thank you for the reply. Looks like I am sol. That sucks. I have a developer phone with a locked bootloader.

Double Checking Rooting Information

Before I try rooting my phone, wanted to double check couple of information.
I have a verizon galaxy note 2.
I updated the patch that came out in May when it asked me to update OTA.
I have been reading up on this site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272066.
Am I ok running VZW-Gnote2-CASUAL-NoYouVerizon-CASUAL-R638b-Nightly.jar? I know there are different versions, but do not know if it will work with the latest update from Verizon that I have.
Thank you~

Well at least now you have root so you can enable neat features in some apps. Of course you can flash roms. See the developer sections and read up on which you may want to flash.
Ridin' a Note 2 blast
So rooting is basically just getting to that team win recovery project screen to do other things? Do I run Cause each time I want to install new roms?

To get into recovery, shut down, then press your power/home/volume up buttons all at the same time, then wait, it should boot into team win recovery. Then you can install goodies on your phone.
I have successfully rooted my device and installed a rom. For some reason, when I press the down volume, home button, and the power button, it goes into odin mode, downloading do not turn off target, and stays on that screen for a while. (This has occurred about 4 times even after pulling battery out and doing it again.)
How long do you stay on that screen for usually?

Honestly if you don't know you don't flash ANYTHING in Odin unless you have to restore to stock then you need to go to the Development section and read droidstyles sticky before you soft brick your phone. You need to have a better understanding of the process before you jump in the deep end.
If you still don't understand how to flash Roms after reading droidstyles guide then watch some YouTube videos on how to flash Roms, DO NOT download any of the Roms those people in the videos are flashing unless they are made for the Verizon Note 2. Never ever flash something for another phone unless you want a potential brick, the only other phones Roms we can flash are the N7105 (LTE version of the international Note 2), the AT&T Note 2, and the T-Mobile Note 2 and even then you can only flash their Touchwiz Roms with a conversion mod. It will be best if the only Roms you flash, until you understand everything, are ones you get from the Verizon Note 2 Development and Original Development sections on XDA.

No you don't have to run Casual again. That's done and won once you see TWRP. You flash (install) roms from TWRP ("recovery"). I recommend that you search "how to flash a rom using TWRP" on You Tube. Then I would read the TWRP thread in one of the xda dev sections and or do google/bing search on TWRP. And starting out at first I would only flash roms from the xda Verizon GN2 dev section. I would forget about roms you hear about elsewhere until you are comfortable with TWRP and the xda dev section roms after 2-3 months. The point being to avoid soft or even hard bricking your wonderful device. Take your time, let the knowledge soak in because the rom world will still be there when you're ready. Good luck.

[Bounty Discussion] Bootloader bounty discussion thread

In order to help make openyoureyes life a little easier, feel free to discuss your issues with the Bootloader here. Please pledge to the Bootloader unlock bounty to motivated the talented individuals to keep this phone from being locked down. Link is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2359090
I for one have gained so much knowledge and help from this thread, I gladly donated. Also support your Devs that give you the roms that make our phones awesome.
Thread is long overdue...too much crap in the other thread.
Thanks for opening this. I for one am pretty content with my S4 overall..... but only because I'm running darkslide ME7.
I feel terrible for those of you who are unable to run custom roms. The bigger issue here for all of us is what will be coming in the future? Will I buy another Samsung device after this debacle? I'm not sure.
I have been contemplating leaving Verizon for T-Mobile because of this nightmare...
I think the lesson to learn here is to never buy a locked device again, and never buy a flagship phone in its debut...because the company is just going to release a developer edition a month later and give us all the shaft.
My .02 cents

I read something on here about "do not flash the latest update" less than 1 minute after starting the update. I actually contemplated doing a battery pull in the middle of it. In the end I just let it ride. Hope I made the right decision.
I wonder how many people that said "I'm willing to lose root, I'm just going to take the update" are now trying to return their phones or *****ing about not having root.

The most I can think of to make this thing work is to somehow change the requirements that this update looks for in recovery, bootloader, etc. But that's up to the devs as i have no knowledge in android developing
How come we dont have a recovery yet? i understand an unlock but isn't a recovery easier to make too? i remember all the other phones i had ( droid 2, razr maxx) The recovery came out right when the root did.

It's to my understanding in order to flash in stock recovery u have to rename the file to update.zip; I understand that it doesnt change the contents of that file but (correct me if I'm wrong) but thats the only way stock recovery will recognize it.

Droid 2 had a bootstrap, if I recall.
Not sure about razr maxx.
Since you need it to boot INTO the recovery, you need to be able to unlock the bootloader and change how it boots up.
Some devices have vulnerabilities with the bootloader that allow it to be bypassed, like a bootstrap etc.

For people that need help (NEW TO ANDROID)

I want to post this thread to help those of you
who are new to android and to the Galaxy S4.
There are many videos on how to do kool things
to your S4, but most of them don't include the
Verizon version of those kool new things. If you
need help and you are relatively new, I ca listen
to your questions and help you out. Most of the
developers are too busy doing other things so we
can have kooler things for our devices, they don't
need another task to take upon their shoulders.
Thank you all developers for Giving us the great
power that comes with Android.
Don't take this the wrong way, but something about this post makes me hope that you'll only be pointing people in the direction of the proper guide, not trying to explain it.

No. That's not how android works. It's not like an iPhone where all of the updates come from apple. Android updates don't come from Google unless you own a Nexus device or a GE device. They usually come from the OEM and carrier. And it's not universal. You can't apply an update from another carrier on your device. The only thing you could do at this point is to install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM. I think there are a few ROMs in development that have a 4.3 base, but that's it. Also, you can't maintain the MDK version and also update to 4.3. They're two completely different versions with many of the components being different, including the bootloader and recovery.

thanks for the info. my gs4 is rooted on mdk with goomanager's recovery. i have been happy with touchwiz so far, so i haven't flashed any other roms yet. i disabled the OTA update with titanium backup but i am a little curious about the VRUAME7 update. what exactly is the deal with that, you can root but not use a custom recovery (so your stuck on touchwiz) or can i get a rooted version of it and have recovery too while enjoying whatever the new updates are.
I have one question for everyone. Depending on the answers I get, the if it aint broke dont fix it rule will apply. So here it goes. (fingers crossed)
I was on Beans MDK Rom with stock kernel and decided to try Darkslide Rom. My phone didnt like the that rom so I flashed back to Beans using my nandroid backup using TWRP. Everything is working fine with no issues at all. Here is where my question comes. I looked at my baseband and it show ME7. Why? My backup should have put me on MDK...right? How I get baseband back to MDK? Anyone have suggestions?

If you have a device that wasn't officially updated to ME7 then you can flash any of the ME7 roms in the dev section. You'll enjoy the new features such as apps2sd and you can flash the ME7 modem separately (Darkslide flashes it for you).

The baseband refers to the modem which isn't changed by flashing most roms or restoring nandroids. However, since Darkslide flashes it alongside the rom (only rom that does this) that is why your baseband changed to ME7. You can get back the MDK modem in a few threads but there is an easy one to find in the second post of the BoneStock rom.

There is one ROM that someone created that is pre rooted... i forgot where i saw it... but yes... its only a Rom so you would be able to go back to whatever Rom you backed up... that being CM10 or stock...

How do I tell which build the phone is at the store
Hi,
I'm new to android and all internet phones.
I'm using a relic right now Motorola e815 with just the phone (text blocked) and I need to get a GS4 for Verizon. I modified my e815 7 years ago, so I could put ringtones on it from the card, but the state of the art (SOTA) curve seems a bit steep with never having used an android phone.
I would like to get the GS4 root it and put custom ROMs on it. From what I read currently, I think this can be done only on the expensive developer phones, or pre ME7 builds.
My questions are:
How do I tell which build the phone has at the store so I can tell if they are selling ME7 or not? Another thread from today said the stock 16gb phones at the store a few days ago when he got his were all pre ME7. Another thread on another board said try asking for the least popular color. OK, but how do I quickly check what the build version is. Yes I've UTFSE, but I must not be calling something by the correct name in the search engine.
Also how do I make sure the CSA does not update the phone and that there is no automatic update before I get home and turn it off? I don't want to find a phone I can root and ROM, but have some idiot screw it up for me by doing the OTA or it happening on my way home from the store. Also if I go to get an app from ? (titanium backup) to turn off autoupdate, do I risk it automatically updating before I can get the chance to root it?
Thank you very much for any help your suggestion you have to offer me and anyone else reading this.

I can answer SOME of your question... I believe that there is really no way to know if the phone has the me7 update on it without turning it on to check... I'm sorry.... I got my phone around the same time the new update was coming out. You can always ask the store assistant to try to set up the phone while you're in the store, that way you can quickly set it up... then go to settings/more/about phone/build number to check if the last three characters are me7 or not...... Although it would be hard to find a way out of that if you find out it has the me7 update.......
If you know for sure that the phone does not have me7 on it for sure..... turn all data off ... wi-fi, moble network... etc.... and download Titanium Backup apk to your computer..... from there you can transfer it to an sd card or USB it to your phone and install it manually....... BUT... for the app to work you have to be already rooted.... so before you buy the phone you need to watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gm3jw3hft1g and follow all instructions for the downloads... You dont nee a network connection to root.... DO NOT TURN YOUR DATA/WI-FI CONNECTION UNTIL YOU FOLLOW ALL I'M TELLING YOU..... once you are rooted SUCCESSFULLY..... run titanium backup find "SDM 1.0" click on it and freeze it!... this will make it so Titanium Backup will Deny the process that pushes the updates.... ater THE APP HAS BEEN FROZEN. You can turn the data back on.... Having done this... you are now able to install the Loki hack and flash ROMs... instructions for Loki hack= http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc_Mh_nNPPw ...... if you have any more questions... PLEASE ASK.... Good Luck. so review...................... ALSO if you need very extremely thorough instructions on how to use Titanium backup see this video. "" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZEa10WtFng
1. Find GS4 without me7
2. Turn off all data
3. Root GS4
4. Download Titanium Backup.apk to PC
5.Transfer apk to phone storage
6. Install Titanium Backup manually on GS4
7. Find "SDM 1.0" and Freeze it
8. You are now safe from me7 update
9. Turn data back on if wished
10. Loki hack bootloader
11. GO CRAZY!!!

i545 Tmobile guys I need some testers

I know there are not alot of us around here, but I know of a few guys that are running a Verizon S4 with A T-Mobile SIM card.
I have been running Verizon ROMS and getting 95% functionality. Service is weird, but works most of the time with a few area's that I have to manually go into gsm mode to keep data. BUT I may have found a work around for all of it.
I am running a the i9505 4.4.2 TW ROM GoldenEye, nothing was changed in the ROM to make it work better with Verizon. I posted a thread to let other people know about it here and it is working for some, and it is failing for others with APN problems, but it was/is 100% working for me with no changes to settings at all. I installed, Loki-Dokied, and booted up to 4G automatically running. I got LTE by changing one word in the APN.
SO I need a couple guys who are running a T-Mobile sim in their i545 to test this method for me and see if I just got really lucky or if we have a winner here.
I will put the how to in the next thread.
***I take no credit for the work on this ROM or the Loki-Doki fix***
**I take no responsibility for you phone becoming a paper weight**
*You preform this at your own risk*
:highfive:
#1 You must be on the MDK boot loader, radio's don't matter but newer radio's seem to have a more stable connection.
#2 Do a Nandroid, you can never be to carful
#3 Do a full clean wipe like your supposed to...
#4 Flash GOLDENEYE VERSION 24 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2427629 (The ROM)
DO NOT REBOOT (you will get an unauthorized boot loop)
#5 Flash http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23329332407577109 (The Loki-Doki)
#6 Reboot and let it sit for 5 or 6 minutes
#7 ????
#8 PROFIT
Report back here with any info or updates you guys have. I have tried a couple other i9505 ROMs with limited success but working together we might find some other ROMs this method works with. Also in the ROM thread iB4STiD has included links to remove a lot of bloat and additional mods.
To get LTE go into your APN settings adn change "epic.T-Mobile.com" to "fast.T-Mobile.com" The data icon wont change to LTE, but I am getting 26 Mbps
Give credit where it is due:
The ROM was created by: iB4STiD
Loki-Doki was created by: TheAxman
Both cool guys who gave me the go ahead to post their work.

I'm aware of what the bootloader is, yes. But this is an i9505 ROM so it won't boot with the i545 without getting the unauthorized Verizon software screen. It was to my knowledge that the i9505 bootloader was removed to avoid this.
And I am on the MDK bootloader in case you were wondering.

If you read the thread for the EagleEye ROM in the OP's second or third post he mentions that the bootloader is not included. That is why I origionaly had it in my OP my lack of sleep and my smoking habits didnt allow the info to sink in right away while I was typing. I was in the process of editing my OP when you posted originally.
ROM's do not include the boot loader. Your bootloader if MDK will stay MDK no matter what ROM you flash.

Roms do not have bootloaders, your phone does. Which was my point. If you have an mdk phone you have an exploitable bootloader. They are not packaged in the rom nor can they be removed from the phone. I just find it interesting that someone posting a ROM for testers ( as well as you, the tester ) doesn't seem understand this....

Haha, my warranty is nonexistent as I bought the phone outright from swappa and am now on T-Mobile. I understand the gist of what having the MDK bootloader means along with how great it is to have the exploit djrbliss made available to us. Just never knew that bootloaders weren't attached to ROMs lol, but now I know. Again, many thanks for giving this noob some much needed insight .

I am by no means a developer, I am just a dumb ass who stumbled onto something that works for me through trial and error and listening to other dumb asses who tried stuff on their phones, and I was hoping it would work for others. Test it, don't test it, what ever.
To be honest I have no idea what a boot loader is, I know what boot loader I am on and I know that some smart guy exploited it to allow us to replace the software with something some other smart guy came up with. I know that the newer ones haven't been exploited like mine and that's why they can't do as much as MDK guys can. Hell I don't even really know what safestrap does but from my razr days I know it allows people to install different ROMs.
Bottom line, I am just a guy using other peoples work to try to help some other people not "error" as much as I have and enjoy their device a little bit more...

I'm running on TMobile. I actually have been since we first started discussing the 4.4 TW roms on the i545. I've had no issues and didn't have to enter any APN settings.
The ROMs we are flashing, Goldeneye for instance, do not include the bootloader. If we were flashing Samsung images then bootloaders and modems would probably be included, and would probably brick the phone since we'd be flashing incorrect sw. That said, as long as you are on the MDK bootloader, exploited by Loki, and running a custom recovery, then following the steps in the OP should work for you. If you get stuck in a bootloop, it's probably a kernel error. Loki-doki should solve that for you. If not, that's why you have your Nandroid back right

I am going to DL and flash soon as I get off work.
Seems to be working for me...
I am using a t-mobile SIM and am still on MDK. I followed the instructions in the OP, and the phone appears to be working. No other mods, themes, etc. other than the OP. SMS, MMS, Data all appear to work. Speeds seem consistent with LTE, but no way to know.
On initial boot, however, I always get this message: "Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped". However, after accepting the message, the phone appears to work normally. It may have something to do with the dark dialer theme that appears to be part of this ROM. I have seen that message before...

[Q] Kit Kat Update on Rooted MDK??

Hi friends,
Specs:
SCH-I545
Android 4.2.2
Baseband: I545VRUAMDK
Build Number: JDQ39.I545VRUAMDK
Rooted
I have a (what seems to be rare) rooted, stock ROM MDK Galaxy S4 running 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean?). Is there a way to update to Kit Kat (and keep root and my MDK status) so I can play with some of the ROMs I see? I know there are ROMs that apply a Kit Kat update (Hyperdrive RLS16 for ex) and I've tried flashing that, but I can't get any other ROMs to stick after that (Like CyanogenMod Nightlies... can't get that to take. What am I doing wrong??), and sadly there's some little glitches in Hyperdrive that are frustrating to me, so sticking with it is not something I want to do at this point.
I feel like I might get burned for asking this but I'm trying to approach this as methodically as possible and I can't seem to find, even with a good amount of searching through the Verizon G S4 forums, a straightforward explanation of how to do this, or if it's even possible. Am I approaching this in the wrong way or asking the wrong questions?? If so, can someone offer a simple explanation of why what I'm asking is not possible, or (more preferably) how I can approach it another way to get my Android Version updated but not lose root or the versatility that comes with managing to maintain my MDK status?
Thank you all for your help!
I'm not too familiar with aosp roms, but hyperdrive was my daily driver before moving on to the note 4. I last updated to hyperdrive rls 18.1 and it had been good to me. Rls 19 is having mixed reviews and never updated my phone to that version because if some minor glitches. I strongly recommend Rls 18.1. I had no issues with my mdk gs4.

What recovery are you using? Clockwork or TWRP? What do you mean by the ROM isn't sticking? Are you getting stuck on a boot screen?
I'm using TWRP and flashed the Google Play Edition ROM which is on 4.4.4 Kitkat with root, I'm still on an MDK bootloader also.
OK, I'll keep that in mind, and thanks for the recommendation.
Any other thoughts on my questions about updating to 4.4.2?
To SkrillaKev - I'm using TWRP. I mean that after I flash Hyperdrive, I'm unable to get any other ROM to flash. It will fail in recovery (Eclipse) or will get stuck on the load screen (as with CynogenMod Nightlies)
I guess an easier question is - Can I flash any custom ROM that is made for 4.4.4 when I'm running 4.2.2??
I'll give the Google Edition ROM a go.

Welp.... I wiped system/cache/dalvik and tried flashing Google Play Edition. got a yellow triangle and the message about having software not approved by Verizon and please report to the nearest Verizon store for bar-code tattooing and sterilization lol
Then I re-wiped sytem/cache/dalvik and tried flashing EclipseTW-S4-v4.0.2-KitKatNC5. Now I'm stuck on a boot screen...
At least when I screw something up I screw it up REALLY good.

No prob... Also I'd let it sit after flashing. You may have to select the correct APN: "Verizon Internet " and change mobile network to "LTE/ CDMA" and reboot. Should stick after that.

Keep MDK!!!! After you flash a ROM. If it gets hung up on boot, hold volume up, home key and power key until the phone resets. Then let it boot up. Don't know why it happens but I have the same problem from time to time and rebooting seems to fix it. I've been using eclipse for 4or5 months now. It's pretty sick

It's pretty sick

you just have to make sure you have. Loki enabled recovery and you can pretty much flash anything here most of the roms have an MDKprocedure and all the information is still here for the old bootloader it is just not as common so you will have to look and older discussions as in not the first page there are several pages to each one of these sections if you look at the you can read through all the pages..the threads are organized in the latest they have been posted in so all your information is going to be considered old school until you get educated and then you just pop right into the current roms..I still have an s4 MKD 32...I gave to my significant because I refused to send it in on a trade and for my m8 upgrade on edge...btw I prefer phil recovery latest edition go to the phil thread and read toward the end and you'll find a link to his current inside the recovery in settings you can toggle Loki. Just leave it on.then it is just like any other unlocked phone.....and never flashed anything into this phone using ODIN unless its MDK ...or the latest radios... make sure you do your homework on whatever you are going to flash and Odin because it very well could contain a later bootloader and completely screw you. and the great thing is that we and other like us on MDK are the only ones that get to play with anything in the original development section....and in case you didn't know safestrap is for locked bootloaders not uswell technically we are still locked but Loki is the key. And that key only works on MDK bootloader.....and I'm sorry but I used hyperdrive before and the old lady that is now on the latest more than likely your problems with hyperdrive stem from not having flash the kernel properly in the proper recovery and not having the latest radios flashed to your device.

Hi friends,
Specs:
SCH-I545
Android 4.2.2

I have two suggestions:
First, make sure you flash the loki-doki.zip RIGHT AFTER you flash a new ROM in your zip queue, just like what was suggested previously.
Second, in case anything goes wrong, you should always have a current NANDROID backup first and this emergency wipe TAR on hand for Odin. There have been 4 separate times, in the span of about a week, that I gave myself the unauthorized software screen, and had to do this. So I would emergency wipe back to stock MDK, re-root, use Rashr to flash TWRP 2.7.1.0, and then I'd restore my NANDROID backup from my sd card. Rashr only works for flashing TWRP because only TWRP in that app is already Loki'd.
I'm still using RSL7 and it works great with no glitches I tried the newest one rsl20 and hated its look and didnt like any off the new features so i went back to RSL7, if you have not tried it you may want to, it is very different from RSL20 and imo way better.
