Samsung galaxy s5 announced - G2 General

Quite frankly I am disappointed but relieved. There's nothing overwhelming about it, so our g2 won't be outdated just yet.
It uses a higher binned snapdragon 800 (which they call snapdragon 801), it is water resistant and dust resistant (ip68), has fingerprint reader and heart rate monitor. Battery is 2600mah, 1080p screen and 2gb ram. Something is telling me that there is a more premium version coming out - maybe the f line.
I could never be happier with my LG-D802.

its 2800mAh, which still is a big disappointment leading that they increased the screen size to 5.1inches
they do claim that you can get over 10hours of web browsing on LTE? idk if numbers are true but so far I love the fact everyones implementing some sort of elemental protections to keep our devices water or dust resistant at least, as far as i know i think there will be two versions of the S5 with one being a 2K and 1080 versions, I could be wrong though as I didnt watch the first half of the unveiling
youre right in some ways that G2 doesnt feel ALL outdated as of yet.
lets hope G3 will advance more than the S5 in terms of new "technology"
what stole the show for me at MWC is the Sony Z2 with its 5.2inch Live Color LED display, 3200mah battery, Snap 801 and fresh water proof
that shouldve gotten more hype

Having owned the S3, S4, and the Note 2, I am thoroughly unimpressed. I like the Sony Z2 way more than the S5.

G2 bezel is a win.

okay i know that the G2 has super slim bezels but now that you brought it up in a comparison like this i never knew how well minimized it is compared to the Samsung.
Props to LG for making the G2 reasonably futureproof. Similar to the OP, i was relieved as well because I'm stuck with this phone until 2016.

Yes, this exactly. I never realized how awesome G2's bezels are. Also, need not worry, the G2 is nicely future-proofed. It's already almost 5 months old? And it's just as good as the ones coming out now.
If anything, I wish the Sony Z2 got the limelight. The specs look awesome. That paired with the fact that Sony has always been dev friendly, it's certainly worth a look.

Added the fact that for serial ROM flashers all Samsung devices include warranty busting KNOX protection, even more reason to stick with your LG G2

If anything it makes me more excited to see what LG has in store for the G3.

OH MY GOD! i knew that our G2 has some impressive bezels, but the samsung flagship positively sucks compared to the G2!!! Wow
it looks like some old mid tier samsung device, not at all a flagship that has released almost 5 months after the G2!!!
I am loving my G2!! Woot!

Wow I'm totally shocked in what Samsung presented there today. There's nothing in the world which would make me buy this ugly phone. A weak battery as always on top. What did samsung think in building a more ugly and unattractive phone then the S4

some leakers are saying that it won't cost as much as the usual newly released flagship. Basically made a flagship look like a typical midrange android device imo.
honestly, it looks exactly like the galaxy S2 with a larger screen

My S2 has broken 3 months ago and it couldn't be repaired so I had to buy a phone in December. I was hesitated becuse of S5, but now I am extremely glad that I bought LG G2. I am suprised that Samsung released such an average flagship model. There isn't much innovation although they release it 6 months later.

Yea the S5 is months behind with very little incentive. The screen isn't as bright and is bigger overall for having a slightly smaller display. However the hardware buttons will give the S5 a larger play area since it won't have a navbar.
For me, I'm happy I didn't wait and jumped on the G2 when I did. The G2 has a bigger battery and screen but in a smaller form factor. I don't want (ever) a fingerprint reader with a device that has carrierIQ crap installed. Stock TapOn feature of the G2 is awesome too.
The if the S5 had a 64-bit processor, it might have been leading the pack of next Gen, but now its at the back of this Gen. Its a good competitor to the G2 but nothing special over it.
Sent from my VS980 4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

64 bit would have made no difference at all.
I agree, the S5 looks a bit weak for a brand new device that has to survive a year. Some of the camera features look nice and some of the other features are good, but the hardware is VERY disappointing. The g2 looks like a much better device, and a few extra features here and there would keep it ahead.
Lets see what KK really brings us. We still dont know really, AT&T devices are crippled by design and the Korean unit is unlike all the others.

From the moment I saw the LG G2, I knew that LG spared no effort on that phone and it will be current for a long time. Latest chipset, a 5.2" screen, 3000mAh battery and optical image stabilization while being and still remaining smaller than all the other flagships with its incredibly thin bezels. And I couldn't use a phone without the Knock On feature anymore. I don't need another phone for at least 1 year or even more.

Gs5 sucks, Samsung make a great mistake today
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I agree that it is not the most attractive phone, but I actually see what Samsung is doing here. For the average person and not tech nerds like ourselves, the top of the line crazy specs do not sell phones. Simplicity with a few distinguishable marketable features sell phones. I love the screen to bezel ration on my LG G2 but alot of the public can overlook that for the finger scanning feature which is the reason for the larger bezel. To add features like 3 gigs of ram or 2k display is just not necessary to the average customers. The screen looks great on the GS5, they can market the finger scanning, and that back is very nice and one thing I do wish the G2 has. I have been saying since the Nexus 7 2012 that phones should come with that back, If it feels anything like that then kudos to Samsung. My point is if they can add those features, market it like crazy the way samsung does, and keep the price point lower then new flagships traditionally are, then Samsung will definitely have a winner. Even if our G2 is still on par with its 6 months since its release. That being said.. I am staying with my G2

It... is... HORRIBLE!!!!! mother of god... Its the worst phone i've seen in years... please, dont buy this piece of ****.

Looking forward to the G3 now...

the only issues this phone has is, "minuses"
1)the small internall memory (that can be changed with external memory partition, with a guide in the forum)
2)no gorila glass
3)no amoled screen (personal)
overall performance in cpu and graphics are equal to galaxy s2 and galaxy nexus
what makes it better choice is, "pluses"
the overall design - build quallity
the bigger screen and the quallity of the screen
the big battery
price, could be the best value for the money device
My benchmarks here:

P769 has gorilla glass only and has smaller screen 4.5 inch. i also corrected what i wanted to mean, i am a fun of amoled displays and i think that its a miss on the phone
p769 has gorilla glass 2 and the screen is fine without amoled. 10 days without a screen protector the glass is amazing, not a scratch. I never had a chance to experience N4 gorilla glass because i used the factory plastic protector from day one but this is very smooth. Curious to hear if anybody managed to scratch or crack L9.

Hehehe i did scratched mine. But this this scratch is almost invisible, i dropped phone on the ground. Comparing to the other phones i have the screen is highly scracht resistant, and the one i have made is so little that i can not see it even if i want, i have to search it.
But still it is possible to scrach it
Btw amoled screens sucks, especiali pentile amoled screens.

Thanks for your quick reply.
Wow everywhere I read it had FM even on Tmob authorized vendor sites and I think the Tmob site it self. Just saw today it says no in a different area of the site. That is total BS to include it on some phones and not others. Actually the various differences in features on the same model phone I find ridiculous, however a 4.5 as opposed to a 4.7 screen is a little less offensive than some phones having FM radios and others not. As you said thanks a lot LG/Tmob. I love this phone but this is leaving a bad taste in my mouth for where I will purchase and what I will purchase in the future.
PS Plus it ships with the 10g software so no root or rollback in order to root...for now.

4.5 instead of 4.7 is also offensive. I even bought two was so excited. Thought this phone had a future like optimus one or samsung exhibit. Its more powerful and everything works. Thought its a good cheaper alternative to N4 or the new Experias. 4.5 is comfortable in the hand and in holster. 4.7 is better for everything else. Now i want 5". I don't know what to expect anymore. More fw updates, no easy way to root 769 10g. I don't know... I'm just glad it works and like the built quality.
I'm used to not having fm radio, usb/otg, other things crippled or disabled, etc

Yeah I agree the difference in screen size is offensive just less offensive than leaving out a key feature like FM radio all together. If I had known that I might have chosen a different phone all together. That said now that I have mine I am glad I choose the phone I did but wish I had bought the international version off Ebay. Not fair LG/Tmob.

Mega awesomeness/not so awesomeness discussion

OK, I think a lot of you are here from a note or note 2, am I wrong?
I came from a Tmobile note 2. When i saw the original note 2, i was hooked on the big screen phones. People don't seem to understand the no bezel thing. A 7 inch phone and 7 inch tablet are two completely different sizes, all because of the lack of bezel. And I will keep buying bigger phones until they don't fit in my pocket anymore.
Now, onto the specifics of the phone. Yes, I think it is a tiny bit slower that the note 2, but still, in some benchmarks it did even better than the note 2. And my test is, can i download using torrents (which suck the processor and ram) and still listen to skip free music, browse the web and navigate the phone. This champ can.
The screen is awesome. it just hits you its so bright. I would have loved a 1080 but hey...
Battery life is great. Ive got a few extra off brands until the oem's come out (if they ever do) but Ive said this before, If i have a 3,200 and a smaller phone has a 2,000-2,500. When the screens are on, we are evenly matched. But the screen is not always on. So when its off, we are both running the same radios and processors, but i have a bigger battery. People don't realize this.
I don't know about you early adopters, but i just paid 515 US, no tax for mine. I think that's pretty good.
Oh, the stares. I was one of the Note 1 early adopters. I loved all the attention and envy that poured in on all sides, call me shallow, but i loved it. Its been diminishing for a long time now, becayse the note 2 was basically around the same size and it came to all the carriers. The feeling is back in full force now. That's what you get for going up an inch.
The functionality of having a pocket-able big screen phone is amazing. It's a small pocket-able tablet, that also handles my calls and texts. You basically give up one handed use at this point, even though i have big hands, but you gain in every area; typing, watching videos, gaming, surfing, any app....
I'm curious how unpopular this phone actually is.... There is basically zero devs here. And correct me if I'm wrong, but it's been out for a month...
On a similar note, the lack of the Samsung battery/charger anywhere on the web is pissing me off. I like having the ability to keep batteries charges externally so my phone doesn't have to be tethered to an outlet. You just swap out the batteries and your back at 100%.

I came from the original Note so I can see and feel a big leap in performance. I guess if you came from a Note 2 then you might not notice any difference or maybe expect so much improvement that you think it's slower. Size wise I am very happy with it, friends and family actually didn't even notice that I'm using a Mega. You can only see the big difference if you set them next to each other, most of the time they see my phone from afar and think it's the Note. If strangers ask, I'll just tell them it's a mini tablet that can make calls rather than a huge smartphone.
Development is slow because they are waiting for a kernel to be developed by Philz and/or Chainfire. It's just been 2 weeks since its been available so I won't worry much about developer support. Right now I've just got root and deleted/uninstalled a lot of bloatware and disabled almost all features so my phone runs very fast. Also, using Foldermount I am able to install apps exceeding the internal storage capacity.
I got 2 extra batteries from eBay which are 3500 mah and I'm okay with the battery life so I'm just using one. As for popularity, I think it will be like the original Note where people started to like it when they saw it being used by others since just looking at the specs of it on paper is not as appealing as holding it in your hand and seeing that huge display for videos and games. Lots of other manufacturers are releasing phones over 6 inches and I'm sure it will be the norm next year.

I'm absolutely with you on that one mate. I'm actually hoping the go for the full 7" screen at some point.
I'm currently rocking the Note 2... I have bought a Mega 6.3" for the mrs and I'm waiting to see what the Note 3 will bring. However I think the Note 3 will be around 6" so the largest top spec device is going to be the Xperia X Ultra for some time, so thats what Im planning on going for (despite the limitations of non removable battery an no flash)... I'd love a 6.5 or 7" Note with small bezels, removable battery etc but I just cant see it being an option this year..
I do predict though that next year we will see some genuine top notch 7" convergence devices. Even with the new Xperia X Ultra if they had trimmed the top and bottom bezels they could have almost fitted a 7" screen into the same footprint. It would have to be "marginally" wider of course. Exciting times ahead I think. I know the tech industry moves fast, but its not moving fast enough for me lol
Bold move by Sony though. At least they are genuinely trying, even if they haven't quite hit it on the head yet.

I hear what you're saying, and I love the large screens, but that Xperia Ultra looks TOO damn big. I think they crossed the line with that one. I think that 6" is perfect for me, but i'm willing to do the Mega 6.3 because Samsung made it so thin and it looks stylish. But the Xperia Ultra kinda looks like a small brick. lol
This would be an ideal device for me if it only had apt-x support. Samsung build quality, large battery, great display, no Exynos(!!).
I have wireless speaker system at home and I use HS3000 headset a lot when I am commuting.
The difference in sound compared to standard Bluetooth A2DP is noticeable.

Here is a video of the Xperia ZU pocket test. I don't think you can walk comfortably with that in your pocket let alone sit or put it in your shirt pocket unlike the Mega. Even the ads for it never show it being put in the pocket, just in bags. The difference in screen size is just 0.1 inch (2.54 mm) which is almost negligible and for that small increase you get a phone that is 2.78 square inches bigger than the Mega plus onscreen buttons that take up to 10 mm of the screen. Also, on screen buttons can be a hassle specially when playing games because they are more prone to tapping.

Mega 6.3
Off screen buttons + bigger actual usable screen = better gaming experience
The price of the Xperia ZU is also questionable at the moment.
You can buy 2 Galaxy Mega 6.3s with over £110 left over with the pre-order price tag.
So how's the Mega like in low light? If you're using it in the bedroom at night with lamps turned off? Is it as bad as the Note 10.1 where light bleeds from the edges and blacks are grey?
GT-N7100 via Tapatalk 2
The pocket size is not really an issue for me. I wear loose bottoms most of the time at home/gym and don't even put my current phone (note 2) in my pocket while in the car or at work.
I admit the ultra certainly has its shortcomings, and without dismissing the mega 6.3 (I bought one for the mrs and she loves it), there really is noting else with real top end specs with the same real estate.
Give me a mega 6.3 with a 1080p screen and a snapgragon 800 and I'd be all over it. It just doesn't exist yet. While nobody can really say they really "need" all that extra horsepower I "want" it and thats enough for me to pay a premium. The device itself will only cost me £49 upfront on my current contract which is up for renewal.

I'm using it right now in bed with the lights off and I can't see any light bleed on the screen. The blacks will not be as deep as AMOLED but it's very good. I actually like the fact that it's brighter than my original Note under sunlight and darker at night time which is great for the eyes.

I'm sure the Mega you wish for will be available next year. As for now, I'll enjoy the first gen Mega since I usually change my phone every year. Paying over double the price of the Mega for something which is not over double the advantage is not for me.
^^^^^^^^^ Logically your right of course, but been as my contract is up and its a case of having the mega 6.3 free of charge or paying £49 upfront for the Ultra Im not going to sweat it.. If i had to double down in cold hard cash and buy outright it would be a completely different senario.

How much do you pay each month and how long is the contact? Are they already offering the Xperia Z Ultra? What network is this?

Thanks... so what you're saying is that at night in bed you can actually make the Mega less bright than the Note2? If that's the case then it's great.

Im with 3 mobile uk. I pay £36 a month for 2000min 5000texts and unlimited data including teathering. Its a 2 year contract. Its been announced they will carry it in Sept. Upfront prices have been rumoured but not confirmed yet. The plan price will stay the same it always does its just the upfront cost that will vary. The £49 upfront sounds about right.
At the end of my contract I usually cancel and take another contract out with the same carrier through quidco the cash back site and get about 100 cash back

Yes. I need an app to get the original Note's brightness down to acceptable levels at night which I don't need with the Mega.

I see. So the £49 up front is not official, being the most expensive phablet/smartphone at the moment I expect the upfront cost to be higher.
£36 x 24 months + £49 upfront = £913 is not bad if you use most of the included minutes, texts, and data.
I just use an Ovivo SIM which give me 150 minutes, 250 texts, and 500MB data every month for FREE so I just look at the actual cost of the phone.
^^^^^^^^^ The upfront cost is going to be same as a 32gb or 64gb iphone 5.
The ebay link posted on the previous page is inflated. You can order for Expansys for £639 http://www.androidorigin.com/sony-x...se-date-set-to-september-13-priced-at-639-99/
By comparison the 32gig iphone 5 is £599 and the 64gb is £699. But yeah using that rational the xperia Z Ultra upfront cost should be about £150... Three charge £129 upfront for the 32gig iphone.
Theres not that much difference in their price plans...The basic ones (with devices) start about £30, and the unlimited one is £36. I have been known to download torrents and teather my laptop to the phone so its nice just not to have to worry about worrying out of date etc

I don't have a Note 2 to compare it with but I don't have to put the volume to max when showing youtube videos to others with my Mega 6.3.

Dumped the Note 3 after 3 weeks for a G2 and here are my findings.

I was a Note 3 preorder guy. I had the phone for 3 weeks....
AND. I sold it to pick up the new white Verizon G2.
The Note 3 was a HUGE disappointment!
The device feels terrible in the hand, with its sharp edges.
Using it outside when the wind blows it wants to fly out of your hands like a sail,
One handed operation, when your sitting down on the crapper is impossible, you cant make that thumb stretch without dropping it.
Touchwiz is really annoying with all kinds of crap constantly popping up in your face. my magazine, searches, bla bla bla.
The Note 3 is overly bloated and feels slow.
The Spen, its cool for about a week, then the Novelty wears off. and you never use it again. (the Spen DOES make 100% sense on the 10.1 2014 tablet which we have however, just need to ditch the TW.)
The external speaker AND the phone speaker are TERRIBLE on the Note 3. No good volume or clarity, a tinny sound and phone call volume never high enough if you cant hear the other party. Even with all the mods out bump the volume it makes it sound worse.
The USB 3 connecter is huge and ugly and I never noticed any difference.
Samsungs continued KNOX and other locking shenanigans. this should be the #1 reason to stay away.. lol
DEVELOPMENT! Development on the Note 3 due to Samsungs Garbage software is a complete hilarious JOKE.
The VZW section for instance has 3 lousy threads! No LOKI. etc. so no kernels. and the Devs who were working on those 3 threads were just doing it for the Bounty money or as a favor.
I could go on and on with my experience about the Note 3. It was a huge letdown.
After I got the Note 3, I started to see the G2 development community really start heating up, and caught my eye.
I come from an Old Galaxy Nexus, and used PGM/touch control for a knock on type wake and I loved it, once I saw "knock on"
on the G2 as a native feature it really piqued my interest.
I got my white vzw G2 on wednesday and I adore it, everything makes sense!
LG did a wonderful job with the stock rom. (there are a few small tweaks I would like such as better looking folders) but for the most part its
amazing.
The LG optimus UI has most of the features you see on custom roms.
it "feels" extremely light, not bloated or resource killing whatsoever.
**PERFORMANCE!
My G2 boots in 23seconds according to start up manager.
The device overall just feels so much more powerful and snappy.
Disk/File IO KILLS the Note 3, pulling up huge app lists, or in app manager, etc.. is instant.
The Note 3 stuttered and got stupid and would FC its own garbage apps, freeze up, etc.. Where the G2 is soo rock solid.
While, Granted the G2 has the shiny back it feels like a much more "premium" device, than the tacky East Asian style of the fake stitched back cover on the Note 3. The Note 3 fake leather back reminds me of those cheap fixtures in Chinese buffets that try to look "expensive"
Display: G2 hands down. I brought my Note 3 into the verizon store, and put both devices side by side both at 100% brightness in an extremely bright room. G2 colors look better, is clearer and more vibrant without the oversaturation. I swear the lcd panel draws faster than amoled, but idk..
Audio! - The phone speaker sounds great, first call I made I was like WOW! it can get extremely LOUD, but not in a screetchy ear bleeding way, in a full clear juicy big kind of way. External speaker sounds full and crystal clear, while the Note 3 speaker sounds very very tinny..
Audio over Bluetooth sounds much better in the car than the Note 3, again much more clearer and open.
Sorry: I prefer onscreen buttons. arrange the buttons in any configuration that tickles my fancy, I can also shrink down that Nav bar with g2 xposed to 60% from its original size while losing 0 of the functionality. With the Note 3 I was constantly bumping the capacitive buttons. and
the Home button is so heavy you have to slam your thumb on that button like a goon, its silly.
Development: Development on the G2 is smokin'! At this point Why buy a Nexus 5?
The G2 has got to be the easiest phone to root and install recovery on, you get more diverse variety of roms, utilizing LG UI and or hybrids of or straight up AOSP. but all on BETTER hardware and can be had for around the same price.
I can go on and on, But I'm loving the G2, and even the stock rom with tweaks.
The LG G2 This Is The Best Android Handset You Can Buy Right Now.
I know that many of my points could be argued otherwise, but as the dude says.

I had the Note 3 for a full 30 days before I returned it to Verizon and got the G2 (when VZW was selling it for $450 off-contract). A lot of your opinions on the Note 3 mirror my own; mostly, I was just shocked that a phone with such god-tier specs felt so slow sometimes. And it wasn't slooooow, but it didn't have the instantaneous response in many areas that I would have expected with its hardware. The G2 is smoother, faster, and more responsive. My only disappointment has been in the G2 camera being worse than that of the Note 3, but I don't take a ton of pictures and it's not a huge difference. For hardware that was $250 cheaper, I'd pick the G2 every time.

Right on, I havent had much time with the G2 Camera yet, Perhaps this weekend I can put it through its paces. I wasnt too impressed with the N3 camera. so we shall see.
Well, I didn't have the 3, but I did have the Note 2. I also had an S4 for a little while but traded back to the Note 2. I got REALLY tired of waiting for Verizon to release the 4.3 upgrade so I put my Note 2 up for trade on Craigslist. (I'm a bit of a CL junkie). I had offers of the HTC One and the new Droid Maxx. I was considering both, but then a guy sent me a text yesterday morning offering a mint LG G2. I jumped all over it. I had read the specs about the speed so I wanted to see for myself. I have to say, this is the baddest smartphone I've ever owned. It is soo fast and responsive. I absolutely love LG's UI. I think it takes the best of all of the other companies UI's and blends them together for the perfect experience. I haven't found a fault about this yet. I haven't used the camera much but from what I read it is awesome. I lost out on a ton of accessories I had for the Note and only got a case in return, but I guess I probably wouldn't have gotten the offer had I not had them... BTW, knock knock is simple, but is the coolest feature ever and I actually like the buttons on the back. I'm so glad I made this trade.
I also had the Note 3 and also sold, got mine on release day, many problems, mainly software, reboots, now I have the LG G2, no probs so far and it feels faster than my Note 3 ever did. My daughter has similar probs but decided to keep hers.
LOL too funny

I am amazed how LG is overtaking Sammy. Bearing in mind how much money sammy has and what a big company they are. Recent years, LG is doing a great job with their mobile device, i dont know why more people arent buying their products. Yeah one of the points maybe are the updates, but come on, Optimus UI is a good enough, what else you may need. Lg is incorporating more useful features than the needless one on Samsung devices, isnt that right ?
Maybe you can also look at this

Actually is not like that, I read somewhere that Sammy and LG has a 3-rd party company which is making their software ( at least the time when the whole skin build was created) now they maybe separated.
Im with ya on being the best phone right now.

I had G2 and now got Note 3. I agree with the post, LG has done fantastic job and I seriously miss the UI and size of G2.
The only reason I have to part with G2 was the voice quality. The voice quality is acceptable if I hold the phone properly, but the slightest change in the direction would make my voice appears as I speaking way far from the phone, for example holding phone between my ear & shoulder. After so many complaints from friends and family about the voice quality, I decided to try another G2 and to my surprise, it also had the same problem. Shown it to LG service centre but they were not ready to accept the problem, instead they were trying to convince me how to hold this phone and I not suppose to keep my phone between my ears and shoulder. I asked them to try Blackberry the same way which they were not even ready to try and hence I gave up.
Hence, unfortunately I had no option but to move to Samsung, Having bitten once, this time I wanted to test call quality before finalizing the purchase so I placed my sim in note 3 and called my brother to check for the sound quality, and he instantly said, "have you changed your phone?", says a lot about the voice quality difference.
In fact, I heard so many complaints in this forum about G2 voice quality which is unfortunate for an excellent phone otherwise. In one of the discussion, someone mentioning an issue with Snapdragon 800 for which Samsung released a patch, was hoping for LG to do the same.
Anyway, I am back to Note 3, not so happy with the size, UI, big icons and stupid SMS logs in call logs (which you can change but it wont remember, fortunately there is an app to fix that), however the sound quality is way much better.

My goodbye.

Just wanted to stop in and thank all of you for all the amazing support given by you guys in this forum. This isn't a bashing forum to say "I'm going to a different phone because this phone now sucks" or anything like that. This is still an amazing phone, I just decided that I wanted to upgrade for more features and a better (faster) camera since I have a 2 year old brother who I am constantly taking photos of. Again, thanks for all the amazing developers and other users who have answered my questions without hesitation, I wish the best for you all! On to the Galaxy S5 thread it is for me!

I thought I would be moving from the G2 to the St, until they announced it. I was convinced it was going to blow me away, but for me it failed.
I have, however moved (when it's delivered tonorow) to the Z2. I don't know why I have fallen in love with it, but I have.
On the other side, the Z2 is going to have to be an amazing phone to live up to the G2. Never ever ever ever, would I have thought I would own an LG phone, but wow, it is truly amazing!!!!!!!!!!! Best phone I have ever owned!!!!

I had the GS3 (best phone I had before the G2) and TouchWiz never bothered me since I immediately installed Nova Launcher. In fact I had the original Galaxy, the G2 and the G3. And I had custom launchers on all of them. I don't think TouchWiz is either a make or break decision.

Alright, quick review now that I've been using it for 2 days.
*please note this is purely out of the box experience on both phones, just to keep it fair.*
Camera: holy hell. The s5 camera is amazing. To me it just blows the G2 camera out of the water. So much faster auto focus, brighter & more accurate colors, instant shutter instead of having to hold the phone still for a second or two every time you slightly move the phone. Plus, all the camera features are amazing. Especially the selective focus shots. Looks extremely professional.
Responsiveness: once again, this is going to the galaxy. Everything seems to snap more in this phone, as if every app were made for it. Even using chrome browser feels like a day and night difference. The zoom is the smoothest that I have seen on any phone. This holds true with everything from gesture typing to just scrolling the home screen. That snapdragon 801 is a beast.
Battery: of course the G2 kills the S5 in this field. The 2800 mAh battery just doesn't stand a chance. Especially with the brightness of the superAmoled+ screen. I have yet to be able to get a whole day of heavy use out of it like I was the G2, but I expected this going in. The phone does a really good job of putting itself into deep sleep though. I am doing nothing to conserve battery (as usual), I have twitter, Facebook, Instagram, vine, ifunny, etc installed, so I was surprised when I realized that the phone was only dropping around 1%/hr with the screen off. But, I have also only had the phone 2 days, things are still breaking in. If anything changes I will come back and edit this.
Display: the display on the S5 is amazing. Holding the G2 side by side the resolution itself looks almost identical, however, the G2 does appear to show whites more accurate while the S5 displays black more accurate due to the magic going on in the amoLED display.
Gimmicks:
-fingerprint scanner: this one was by far the most frustrating to me. The fingerprint scanner was one thing that really caught my attention about this phone. Since it's Samsung making it I figured it would be as good or better than my old 5s. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Don't get me wrong, it isn't terrible, it works, it really does; there is just a technique to it that you have to teach yourself in order to do it one handed (the scanner is designed to be used two handed, one hand holding the phone with the finger on the other hand being scanned.) Now that I have figured out how to do it, I am proud to say that I can successfully use the scanner 95% of the time.
-IP67:I have not got to test this thing out against dirt yet (waiting until I go dirt bike riding again) but you best believe that within 4 hours of the beauty coming in the mail I was texting people in the shower. It really works! I was worried because the aux port is left open, but somehow they have managed to make it work! I have run it under a stream of water from the sink to wash the screen off (which, by the way, works wonders!) And I believe I got some water in the aux jack or something because the auxiliary did go a little faulty for about 30 minutes, but it seemed to fix itself!
Touchwiz:my only gripe about touchwiz this time around is that it looks cartoony to me, almost like a child's toy. The DPI definitely needs to be dropped a bit, that would make this display amazing. Everything else is fine. I love the Samsung "Gimmicks". The multi window, gestures, etc. work great as usual.
Final: The S5 is a great phone, it's lighter, it's faster (just enough to be noticeable), the camera is about as good as it gets on a smartphone, and it can read fingerprints and take a dive. If none of this matters to you, there is no logic in you purchasing the S5. But, if you are in need of a better camera or a dust and waterproof phone, you can't go wrong with the S5!

It isn't bad by any means, I'm just hoping for more and more each time I'm reaching for the charger. If I were someone who used my phone ~3 hours a day I would be absolutely in love with this battery. Unfortunately I'm not. I'm on mine usually 5 hours or so a day.

Wow, thats weird because GSMarena said the GS5 was one of their longest lasting phones yet in battery tests. Should be pretty close to the G2.
http://blog.gsmarena.com/samsung-galaxy-s5-battery-test/ (S5)

Maybe check settings, apps, sync, location settings.

You have to know that these tests are done with pre-release firmware often, and G2 at least were suffering a bit from wakelocks at start. If they did a test now with KitKat it would blow the old value away, especially enduring.

The G2 already did very well, the tests attest to that. Just saying that the GS5 was supposed to be close to it.

I have never once in my life gotten as good battery life from Samsung phones, that are reported in tests. They always have some software crap that eats battery on the background and you can't get rid of it without rooting and that in turn flags Knox. Some friends who bought the S5 are saying the same - they have issues with the battery.
This is why I absolutely never trust battery tests unless they are done be real users and in real life for an extended period of time.

Lol, thats understandable. They do it in ideal conditions, ie excellent signal, 50% Brightness, no draining apps etc. Also AMOLED kills battery on web due to all white background as all sub pixels are needed for white. AMOLED uses more battery than LCD in such conditions by +100% or more. Not to mention at full brighness, and the screen burn to top it off after a few months which I have seen.

[Q] suppose that you didn't buy Galaxy Alpha yet ... would you buy it now ???

Hi all
suppose that you didn't buy Galaxy Alpha yet ... would you buy it now ???
please explain why for both answers yes/no ....
don't tell me that the battery is too small because I don't care about this thing at all
------------
I can't see enough support for this phone on the internet especially on xda i love rooting & changing my system & play with my phone :3
please give some attention to my question .......
thanks
Yes.
The reasons :
+Beautiful design and nice feel
+Excellent 8core processor
+No problems in functionality ( no lags, freezes, restarts, shutdowns)
+I like super amoled screens, the blacks are amazing.
+Good camera in day light (not good in low light conditions though)
+I like powerful compact phones.
+ Priced at 300€ in my country ( one of the most top selling smartphones when the priced dropped) , which makes it the top value for money compact smartphone.
As for your needs , there is a problem and you already know it . The support from devs is little so you will not be able to "play" with custom roms.
No
Now that the S6 is out I would probably have gotten that.
The small battery may be a non-issue for you but for most people, it is a real annoyance. So I would chalk up the battery life to be the top reason I would not get this phone if I hadn't.
yes ... this phone is better than eny other phones.....even better than s6 becuse the s6 has a 2k screen and in the games is not that good...alpha is the best i install cm 12.1 that was awesome and in cm 12.1 battry life was verry good much better than ferench android 5.0 i get 54000 antutu and 1.50 free ram but still cm in the nightly ...im going to keep it for next 4 yers .. i love it
maybe. I would go for the s6 if I had the money
is there cyanogenmod support for galaxy alpha !! it is unofficial as i see on the internet :\ ..
what about the performance of the memory (RAM) & the white colour problem with the camera like these photos & the focus speed of the camera??

+1. sunscribe to ipred post
this is really the best phone of 2014 in my opinion!
compact and powerfull and no issues
as a minus, only battery but you dont care about
not to forget a big minus for me is that damn gorilla glass 4 display - after 2 weeks of use i saw 3 superficial scratches and i dont know how they appeared.
i use my phone with the ringke fusion case and alone in my pocket...
for me this is a dillema -how the hell gorilla glass 4 get scratched knowing that no heavy materials pocked the phone...
youtube is full of videos with gorilla glass 4 being resistant to scissors, cutter, keys, etc
my old lg g2 was used with keys in my pocket and display is still untouched, not even a microscratch!
and of course that will not be changed on guarantee, i have talked to customer service of the shop.
i should talk with gorillas peoduction service, but i have no hopes.
thanks bro.
anyone would talk about the camera or the memory ?? :'(
camera wasent that good it bad verry bad ....memory was the best 1.530 mb free ram
I buy it now cause it is $250 unlock n new. It is a nice phone for this price. It has metallic edges and removable battery. I use this tiny phone when I go jogging instead of the bigger phone which I also have.
Yes. But only the octacore version. Att one not only dies in 3-4 hours. It lags real bad. If ur in america get the 850m. Best fone I've had. And I've had em all. I do wish there was more development. Tho. But the one Rom we got is great tho
I just got my alpha 2 days ago. Mines the att version, the 850m was $100 more, but for the price it was at its a very good phone, I think the camera is very good, the battery life is ok, but you can turn on power save mode if you're going to be away from a charger, I wish Samsung wouldn't have discontinued the alpha line. It's a very good phone, my favorite part is the metal build and the display, the display is very good even at 720p

Go find it on fleabay.
If battery is a concern, get another OEM battery for $6.
I love this phone. I dont know why Samsung discount this phone. I wish they make it for every carrier here.

Do you use your 850M with ATT? If so, do you have trouble connecting to LTE?
I've just bought my brand new Galaxy Alpha (850F), 330€ (with 23% vat).
It came with Lollipop installed (v5.0.2).
I found it the best choice for this prize target considering the specs and screen size (4,7'' was the limit).
My last device was the heroic Galaxy S - still perfectly working, but 5 years of difference is quite something...

Haha 5 years, so how does the alpha feel now?
Sent from my SM-G850F
Without a doubt yes. The only phone i'd switch to is an s6 or ip6.

Camera is very good but not excellent or great.
Camera is like a Galaxy S5 if S5 is in 12 megapixel mode.
Because Alpha IS the S5 Sensor restricted to 12 megapixels in Firmware. Samsung intentionally held back the Camera to be BELOW quality of S5 ¿!
Note 4 , S6, LG G4 Cameras are a major step up from Alpha but in good light you can get very good results.
If you get a Tempered Glass Screen Protector Alpha is one of the most durable Phones extremely rigid.
I had the Alpha charging on someones Patio and when sliding door was opened the USB Cable metal end into Phone got bent to perfect 90 degree angle ( ouch) with NO damage to Alpha USB Port or Frame etc. Case was a Casemate Naked Tough but it was the metal frame that absorbed the force.
USB Cords still fit snugly.
That is a rugged metal frame !
The Exynos Alphas have the Wolfson Audio Chip which gives a great speakerphone almost as loud as S6 but less distortion so you can hear an Internet Broadcast clearly 20 or 30 feet away in quiet room or quiet Patio etc on Tune In or Iheart and hear what they are saying.
Spare battery for heavy users 3 to 4.5 hours SOT at low brightness per battery charge on one battery.
Very good loud call quality- again Speaker is as loud and full as HTC One Mini (not the big HTC) and on a way different level than S4 S5 etc.
The AT&T Version does not have this
Speaker volume or fullness- AT&T has decent but tinny speaker.
Alpha is very good at $250 to $350
IF you like a smaller rugged phone.
IF you like very high res screens obviously you won't like 720p but I like it.
Agree to get Exynos version faster more efficient CPU and much better Audio.
As discontinued less popular phone not much Development.
