Can You See Screen Scratches? - HTC Droid DNA

Hey folks,
I'm looking to buy a used phone on ebay. The description says that the screen has a slight scratch on it that can't be seen when the phone is turned on...only when it's off. Having never had a scratch on any of my phone's screens, I can't easily verify that claim. Does this have the ring of truth to it?
If you've had a slight scratch on your screen, does it really only appear when the phone is off? What about when the screen is dim? Or what about at different angles, etc? Does it pretty much always just disappear?
Thanks

I have a few scratches in my screen that are really only visible from slight anez, when the screen is off,and when the screen is solid white
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app

I have super tiny (1/100 of a millimeter in width) ones that are only visible when the light (only direct sunlight) hits it just right, other than that I forget that they are even there
Probably from being placed in a pocket

Awesome. Thanks guys.

I even have a dent on the screen and it's barely visible when the LCD's on, so a hairy scratch that won't be noticed while the screen is on sounds like true

I had a small crack in my screen and I never noticed it while using the phone unless you really look for it, small scratch you will be fine won't even notice it

[Review] DC Mugen Privacy screen protector

I just wanted to let you know NOT to buy the new Touch HD privacy screen protectors.
They seem very good "on paper", however in reality it's a major disappointment. The privacy screen protector should reduce the viewing angle of your screen, making sure that people sitting next to you can't see the screen. This feature does in fact work up to a certain point, but the problem is that this screen protector reduces display quality so badly I consider it unusable.
Basically, the entire screen get's a very harsh rainbow color effect and some strange wavy lines that make your screen look like a 1995. CRT screen.
So, in short - avoid it.
I had a mirror screen protector turn up with a case I bought.
Applied it fine, then got the green and pink lines when looking through it, it actually became more clear the larger the angle I looked at it from!
The protector scratched really easily too, tried changing backlight brightness by dragging and I got a nice scratch. I wasn't pushing hard.
Nice idea, poor implementation.
I was thinking about getting something like that. How about some pictures? lol.
If it looks alright, I might swing for it from some other manufacturer because my friend has one on his iPhone and it's perfect.
I threw the protector away 5 minutes after trying it out. It's THAT bad.
As far as the iPhone goes, it's possible that it's not the same manufacturer. Also, it would seem that extremely high pixel density of Touch HD's screen could be linked to the way display get's messed up with rainbow effect.

[Q] Change sensitivity of proximity sensor

Is there any way to change the sensitivity of the proximity sensor. It seems every screen protector I try makes the screen turn off when in a call even without anything near the sensor. I had to cut one of the screen protectors to get around it (but had messed up a corner when applying so I replaced it)
Or is there a way to completely disable it so I just have to hit the power button when in a call to manually turn the screen on or off.
+1
Dont have the same problem but would be helpful.
There is a distance setting in the build.prop file. You could try adjusting that and seeing if that helps.

Perfect. Changed the value (increased it from default of 60) and its working great now. Thanks for that tip.

Well after further testing seems that it didn't fix the problem. Seemed to work when I first made the changes but now the screen is stroll turning off and no matter what I change the value to I can't get the proximity sensor to work right.

According to the official Atrix manual -

Note: Your touchscreen might
stay dark if the sensor just

Anyway, why do you guys keep using the screen protectors with this gorilla glass phones? I have carried Moto Milestone in my pocket for a year and D2G for 3 months and there are no scratches on them whatsoever.
I use them on every phone I get because although it is gorilla glass it can still get scratches under the right conditions and I for one do not want my $400+ phone to have a scratch on the screen. Never had a phone that had issues like this with screen protectors and the proximity sensor. Multiple iPhones, Dell streak, nexus one, droid, galaxy s. I've tried two different screen protectors with the atria and both have this issue.
I'm having issues with my proximity sensor too, but it seems that I can't make it turn off the screen when I'm talking. I'm not using any screen protector but I do have a case. It was working fine till a week ago but now I just have to block the phone every time I get a call.
The only difference is that I've installed 2 new games, maybe those are affecting the sensor?
Another thing that isn't working anymore is the auto brightness that's always set to minimum, no matter the light conditions. The phone is online for 260+ hours already (had it go to 500+ before but had to turn it off to add a micro sd card, just to be sure it would find it).

Ugh... thing is if you drop your phone, it could crack both with screen protector and without one. If you grind the screen against your keys, it will get scratched through the protective film.
If you use it normally - the chance of scratching it really small. Just my 2 cents.

My wife's phone had a screen protector on and got scratched by being in her purse. The actual screen though had no marks. The screen protectors help. Obviously each incident is different but they can help prevent some damage so in my opinion they are worth it.

Got the same trouble..... but I just noticed it work fine at the sun (outdoor)..... turn the screen off in the shadow..... and switch on in the sun....
so I think a light adjustment has to be done.... but where ?...

fix scratch

does anyone know of a way to fix a small scratch on the screen of the htc thunderbolt?
I think that your only choice will be to replace the screen, if it bothers you enough.
Maybe use a screen guard in the first place?
Take attention away from it with a bigger scratch.
yeah as the guy's were saying above, you'd either have to replace the screen or put decent screen protector on it to minimize the screen' appearance.
if it was the body of the phone, then that's a different story...
I have a small one on my phone and I noticed that the darker the screen is while it is turned on the easier it is to see. If you turn the bightness up to middle or more you can't see it while on the phone or internet. Just try not to look at it while the phone is off, I tend to keep trying to rub it off and just make it worse....Why didnt I use ghost armor...oh wait I know why cause the Thunderbolt has Gorilla Glass.....I am not buying stock in that strach proof technology.
Gorilla Glass has turned out to be the biggest bull**** the tech industry has seen since antenna fate's flawless design

Light bleed through

So I just picked up the DNA today. Loving it! However, I just noticed that I'm seeing light bleed through on the bottom, just below the capacitive buttons when they're lit up. Anyone have this?? Really disliking this!
Yeah. Pretty common.
It is really easy to fix though and you can do it yourself. Unless you want to keep exchanging them and hoping you find one, this would be a better way.
Go to your local auto parts store and pick up this:
http://www.apmengineparts.com/82180.html?productid=82180&channelid=FROOG
Get the smallest one you can because you are only using a bit.
Take a toothpick and apply it to the bottom of the glass where it meets the plastic. Try to push it into the crack, if possible. Let it sit for a few seconds and then take a paper towel and wipe it off along the crack. DON'T get it into the usb port!
Let it dry for a few hours and you are good as gold. It also has the bonus of increasing water resistance and keeping dust out.
Mine didn't have that at all. I guess I got lucky. I do have a small spot almost dead center on the screen that looks like a bluish smudge though. You can only notice it on a white background. It's musky annoying but faint enough to live with.

I have two spots on the botton too...never had this issue with LED screens. How likely is it not to have the light bleeds? If this is indeed a common problem for the DNA, I won't bother exchanging mine

Hmm I guess it isn't something to be concerned about then.
I checked mine again right now in the office restroom with lights off and the phone screening an entirely black image; it does not have any light leakages at its full brightness, but there are two centered light spots triggered by the capacitive buttons that are only visible at the lowest brightness level.
Therefore presumably, turning off the capacitive button lights will eliminate the seemingly light leakages, as they do not seem to be defects caused by the LCD panel itself. But if such a leakage is glowed anywhere else but about the two centered areas just above the capacitive buttons, such as any corners or left/right/upper edges, then it would indeed be a sign of a defective unit.

Well in case nobody noticed when the lights are on and you are in a dark room and you tilt the top of the device away from you, when you get to a certain angle you can actually see the light from the buttons because of how the glass is curved. This will appear on every DNA because of the glass. so if you have light coming from BELOW the buttons make sure its not this that you are seeing.
I only have light bleeding through at a certain angle. I may pick up some of that stuff though.

In my case, its coming from the seam between the curved glass and the trim.
Mine too, I can see it from any angle. There's two spots where it bleeds, the gaps between the captive buttons

Well, at least I'm not the only one. Might just try to ignore it...we'll see how that goes...
Yeah I'm still torn about what to do. Kinda want to relock/ruu and exhange but what if the new one has something different wrong with it. This one works great, the bleeding is just visual and only in a very dark room so might just do what adryn did and seal it with some gasket maker

I just sealed mine. Took 5 minutes tops, and only because I was being precise.
No more light bleed and increased resistance to dust and water.

You think that's really what they're seeing? You can't physically stop that without changing the shape of the glass. i prefer the continuous curve over a slight refraction you can't ever see.

I'm certain (in my case) that its the glass and the trim.
Nothing a little black silicone doesn't fix. The shape of the glass is not the problem. The problem lies near the capcitive keys where the glass meets the glossy trim. They are two different pieces.

[Q] Complaints I heard - true?

Some oddball complaints I just heard (not saying they necessarily make sense):
- Screen image yellowish: Apparently an early production issue?
- Power button sort of wobbly
- Bad protection film on screen ( can't it just be pulled off and replaced by a 3M or so?)
- Videostream playback crappy when Bluetooth is active?
Protection
I have seen the display protector on Youtube, he thought it was a standard one and thought it could be taken off, so I would say it's not good. Maybe we can just replace it
I can confirm that on me device (SGP311DE):
Screen image is yellowish!
my SO- 03E screen is heavy yellow!!
will you return it?
Compare the Xperia Z display to a white sheet of paper. If one has other devices (many of which can have a blue/hi temperature cast to them) the sudden change to a white or even a warm screen can look very yellow.

It has a yellow tint compared to a white paper too.
I am not bothered by it though.
So, basically:
screen yellowish: yes.
power button sort of wobbly: yes..but not even close to the "I am afraid it will fall off" area or something like that.
bad protection film - cannot confirm, the film is fine
bluetooth audio - got nothing to test that.
On my Tablet Z the USB port doesn't deliver enough current to power a 2.5" external harddisk.
The disk works fine with a Nexus 7 and an Acer A700.

Screen colour looks absolutely fine to my eyes.
Power button is a little bit wobbly. I can't understand why that would bother anyone though.
I immediately removed the screen protector film. It looked like standard packaging stuff rather than attempt at a proper permanent screen protector. I never use screen protectors anyway.
Video playback of a full HD movie with sound playing through bluetooth speakers was faultless.
Hope that helps.

err... You do not mean the sticky tabe which was on the screen fresh out of the box? Because that isn't the screen portector film.
Do you still have the Sony logo on the top left? That one is printed on the screen protector film, so if you had removed it there would be no logo anymore either.

Is the back of the tablet made by the same back material used in the xperia s?
And is ir true that the wifi models don't include sd card support?

- on 3g model - it's perfectly white, without any yellow hints, but I heard it's a problem only with wifi-only models. But cannot confirm, since haven't hold them in my own hands.
- kinda, little bit, doesn't bother at all.
- Yeah, it is bad. It doesn't really help with fingerprints, and it scrathes really easy. I've removed it on my tablet, and, by the way, logo printed on tablet itself, not on the protection film.
- haven't tested it, but even if so - it sounds more like software problem, so it can be fixed in the future.

WOW, I didn't even know there was a screen protector on it, I bought one with the table and was slowly getting round to fitting it...guess I have a spare now.
I've been very happy with mine, Bluetooth audio and SMB movie streaming from my Windows server works great. Powers my external SD card reader without additional power.
But I have just raised a case with Sony about my screen, since this morning I've got a very yellowish area along the right hand side of the screen, only noticeable on light backgrounds. Looks like a burn mark or something similar.
Will have to see what happens there.

Last time I saw partial screen yellowing along an edge, it was due to glass separation along that edge from the chassis on a 32 GB Wifi Nexus 7. The image was also grainier than on my old (and currently only) 16GB Nexus 7. Don't know if that helps in the diagnosis.

Did you put a new screen protector on? From the sounds of it I'll be taking it off straight away, but I don't like screen protectors, so I don't want to add another.
If so, is it fine? Are there any hairline scratches? Cheers

No I haven't, but plan to do it later, cause the screen itself attracts to much fingerprints. But in terms of scratches - there are none so far, even though I don't use cover also. And I doubt there will be anytime soon, cause if I'm not mistaken they use dragontrail glass, same as on Galaxy Nexus, which I didn't bother to put protection on, and which is still like new even after a year of intensive usage.
