Psa: Do not dial *228!!! - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I was being a dumbass and dialed *228 thinking it will update my PRL and improve my signal. Immediately after programming, I was limited to 3g connection. I lost 4g/LTE connection. I fixed this by going to the Verizon store and asked them for a new SIM card, which was free of charge.
*228 is for 3g phones ONLY. Not for the GS4, unless you like 3g connection speeds...
It is a relatively simple solution, but it can also be easily avoided. Save yourself the trouble, and don't make the same mistake I did.

When you have cable TV and nothing seems to be on you get bored. When you get bored you try to improve your cell phones data connection. When you try and improve your data connection you use *228 when you use *228 you limit you data speeds to 3g and it requires a new sim card. Avoid using *228, ditch your cable TV and sign up for for direct tv. Lol

I did that once. Apparently you wipe the SIM card when you do that and you have to get a whole new SIM card. I was having data issues as well and thought, I'll just reprogram the phone with *228. Yeah, no that didn't work.

I made the same mistake too. I waited a few days and no 4G/LTE came back. I tried going to the local corporate store and they wouldn't even talk to me as I was running a custom recovery & rom (on MDK bootloader!). I went to one of the retail stores and they helped me out with a new SIM card.

another way to get prl back is to clean flash a rom and the system automatically does a prl update on boot if other steps dont work
Sent From My Hyperdriven S4

I did this a month or two ago and lost my 4g. What I did was contact Verizon Support (via web chat but you could call them). I told them I accidentally dialed *228 and lost 4g and asked them if they would manually push a PRL update to my phone. The technician had me power off my device and when I turned it back on all was well, had 4g again.
This saved me the awkwardness of taking my phone into a store where they would see it was rooted with a custom ROM.

Sadly, found this thread too late. I dialed *228 and had to go get a new sim. At least no questions were asked at VZW.

Yeah . . I did it too lol

If you want to change your connection or update your prl's there's a code you can typee in the phone dialer to bring up a hidden menu.
In the dialer type *#*#4636#*#* and then go to phone information and scroll down and change the option to CDMA/LTE and that always works for me.
I've heard of a few people that this hasn't worked with, but other wise it has always worked for me.

Go into the hidden menu and do ##rtn# should be the last one. If I remember right this may cause a factory reset as well so be sure to back up.

You *might* have to go back to stock if the SIM can't be activated for Verizon. The debloating process might have removed something needed.
Would a factory reset delete beans plus root/relock bootloader ? Thanks ! I will try both of your suggestions and keep you posted !
I'm just curious have any if you powered the phone on without the sim. Then powered down, put the sim back and powered on?
It is such an easy thing?, but maybe someone overlooked it.

My Galaxy S4 prefers 3g over 4g LTE

So I installed the Google Edition rom on my GS4, and everything worked fine. Then I had the brilliant idea to call *228 to reprogram my towers, and I lost all 4g connection.
I restored back to my stock rooted rom, and used Phone Info to see if I can get 4g back. When I made Phone Info do LTE only, I got 4g LTE connection, and it passed the ping test, but I switched back to LTE/CDMA auto (PRL) and it goes back to only 3g connection.
Is there anyway to fix this?
Dialing *228 doesnt do anything for 4G. The cell towers are automatically updated via your sim card.

Cannot get LTE at all!

In locations I know for a fact have LTE. First thing I tried was ##72786#. I got excited when during the hands free activation of had a LTE signal for the first time. However, after the phone automatically reset it went back to LTE.
I have no idea what is going on here. This is my third Note 3. I'm on stock rooted MI5 firmware.

I had this problem with my GS3 and was tired of calling them and them telling me that there was an LTE outage in my area OVER and OVER again. So I decided to take it into a sprint store and hold it next to the demonstration models and asked them why their LTE worked but mine clearly didn't work and that got their attention to exchange it out after they tried fixing it for 45 minutes.

Forgive me if I'm off, I was slightly confused by your post and I'm delirious from lack of sleep...
1. Try toggling airplane mode, this usually helps me reconnect to LTE.
2. Update your PRL and Profile.
Every Sprint PRL. (includes everything you need to know about PRLs)
3. Install LTE Discovery on the Google Play Store.
Good luck.

That is good info. Maybe this thread should be a sticky. What would be nice is a way for users to verify their SIM card #s online.
Question - Is the SIM card just for 4GLTE? I did see one in my Note 3 but my past CDMA/Wimax Sprint phones didn't require a SIM card. I thought only GSM phones required a SIM card.
I bought a Note-3 off of swappa.com, didn't come with SIM card.......so finally figured out that was the reason why I'm not getting 4GLTE.
Picked up a SIM card from Sprint, all is good.........I now have 4GLTE.

Root, Roms and Straight Talk

Any one knows if rooting and flashing roms will mess the service on a AT&T Mega(SGH-I527) flashed on Straight Talk?. if not, what rom would be the best one?.
Thanks.
Hello!!!, anyone?????????
there are no roms on the at&t version yet
The phone is not flashed to straight talk, it is neither unlocked. Your phone is most likely an AT&T version and straight talk uses AT&T towers so the phone will automatically run their network, no flashing networks.
To answer your question rooting your phone will be like rooting a regular AT&T phone as you have nothing flashed on it.

correct.. and Straight Talk, Walmart Family, Net 10 etc sim cards....
so.. no flashing neccessary...
only different APN settings needed.
Hopefully your Mega will automatically find the correct APN settings of the particular sim card that you put in before boot up..
If it doesn't work for any particular sim, then you'll have to find the APN settings and create one that will work with any given sim
good luck.

It's really working.
don't go over your 2.5gb data cap.
I always thought I was invincible to the cap because I had a iPhone 4 and the speed always seemed the same. Well I got my galaxy mega on monday and by wednesday I was at 4.1gb. It was because I had downloaded Asphalt 8 and a few more games using the incredibly surprisingly fast straight talk 4g. Well then my internet completely disappeared. I know straight talk had nothing to do with this. But my apn settings deleted itself. I don't know why haha. But anyway I called straight talk saying I couldn't find the correct apn setting they helped me get the correct one and then I asked her if she thought if I used to much it would go over ( I didn't want to say I went over) She then said oh wail actually you already have seemed to exceed the cap. She said I should experience slower data. She then proceeded to tell me that once the 2.5 gb cap is passed that the internet slows down to 2g? I asked her if it was edge and she said no 2g.
I plan on switching to simple mobile within the next two days.

Problem with 4G LTE

Cannot get my S4 to connect to 4G. I have MDK rooted/unlocked running Carbon Rom, tried Sonic Rom and GPE 4.4.3, used Odin back to stock unrooted and still no 4G LTE.
Whats happening: on stock I had 4G at first boot-up but then it cannot connect anymore. When on Carbon if I change APN back to LTE Verizon standard it connects to LTE for a moment but kicks back to diff APN and 3G only. Same on any AOSP or GPE rom.
Any ideas? hardware issue?

Have you tried the app Automatic system settings? You can select LTE only mode and force it into LTE. Ever since Kit Kat, I've had 4g far less than before. It constantly switches out to 3g when not in use for a while. Happens mostly inside buildings.

Not awesome. 3 days on new Sim and 4g is no longer persistent. Anyone else with similar problems? I've tried another 3 or 4 roms and no progress.

Still happening on touch wiz?
Did you try re-flashing I545VRUAMDK_modem_apnhlos.zip from the modem thread?

I've tried using LTE only with Network settings and sometimes get LTE to stick but no cell signal available then.

Kinda pissed right now, because I did use *228 and that might be it. It worked fine on stock and AOSP for a long time but I switched phones with my wife and did *228, got a new SIM card and worked but tried *228 to update roaming

Well F me Verizon. Thanks! At least now I know and I can fix this. Thank you for solving this problem - with rooted, flashed 1k times, warranty voided I was afraid I was stuck with 3G forever. Hopefully the Verizon store doesn't care that my phone is rooted, they got a little inquisitive last time.

No they don't care. Just if you make you feel better throw MDK back on there and freeze SDM but I've been in there for Sims running Liquid Smooth. Nothing they can do. Especially just for a Sim. That's a separate issue.
That post said someone had called them and explained and they fixed it without going into the store
