[Q] Samsung Galaxy Mega and Netgear PTV3000 via Miracast issue - Samsung Galaxy Mega

Has anyone tried this device with Miracast/Samsung Link (screen mirroring)? Using a Netgear PTV3000 Push2TV with the Galaxy Mega 6.3 (AT&T) the audio quality is extremely poor without any definition, sounding like mono with no bass or treble extension. I used a Note3 (AT&T) with the same Netgear PTV3000 and it sounded great. Both devices had identical and mostly excellent video quality via the PTV3000 (as long as no other programs are running or you aren't multitasking on the device). The audio/video was tested on the Mega and the Note3 using MX player, Pandora and the Android stock music (MP3) players.
I read on this forum the Mega stock video player does not support AC3 or DTS encoding of which I didn't test but I don't know if that factors in or if something else is going on. The Mega is running Android 4.2.2 stock ROM and rooted. The Note3 is running Android 4.3 stock ROM and also rooted. The PTV3000 is now updated to the latest firmware 2.4.26 and I have manually reset the device using the reset button on the back as well. Also, using a genuine Samsung MHL 2.0 (white) HDMI adapter both devices play audio and video without any sound or video quality issues.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I'm sure I left out some important details.

Sorry to hear you have this trouble. First off please make sure that you turn off any audio effects on the Mega. Secondly I am sorry to say, the decoding chip on the Mega is maybe not powerful enough for what you're trying to do. Thirdly, Maybe you can try a different player. I have had good results with the Archos video player on the Mega. Good luck!

What audio effects that you mention could be enabled/disabled? Where would they be located to change? I have gone through the device and only found the option to change the HDMI audio between stereo and 5.1. The solution you mentioned could help with playing audio in videos but it persists in Pandora streaming radio along with the stock music player too. I was thinking the same thing regarding the device itself after researching and thinking about the embedded hardware, there may be a limitation to what the device can do though I would expect it to be in the video encoding performance over Miracast and not the audio quality. I will try it out though and see how it works. Thanks.

I was referring to the system setting. Go into settings then accessibility. Tab sound balance and make sure it's in the middle. Then also uncheck mono audio.

You might not believe this but after reading a suggestion on another message board plugging in headphones and then unplugging them triggers high quality audio over Miracast on the Mega. It leads me to believe this is a ROM issue. Any thoughts?

[Q] Tv-output on Ace

hi
is anybady had tried that Tv-output working on Ace
There should be a way..
Thanks for bringing this up, well, I thought about it, and contacted Samsung regarding that, and the short answer for this was NO, Ace does not do tv-out
Now, we know that the 3.5mm audio jack has 4 contacts used for ground, mic (in), left channel (out), , right channel (out), I thought there should be a way to use one of the channels to send 'video' information rather than audio, the problem is, these are used for audio and we need to modulate audio frequencies to carry video signals via a software (app).
For ordinary NTSC video the bandwidth is about 4 MHz. So we'd need a higher frequency carrier than that to convey it, so it's very difficult, sending anything close to full-motion video through the phone's audio connection is not possible (theoretically). The audio bandwidth is not sufficient to carry such a signal.
But there's hope (i think), afaik, "radiofacsimile", and "slow scan TV", send video info via audio channels, the thing is they are so slow, i.e. with low frame rate (really low) this should be technically possible, and this is enough for some applications like displaying still pictures or slides on a large screen.
What I'm suggesting here, if there is a good developer who can develop a simple Android (or whatever) app that takes a snapshot of the screen, creates a corresponding video signal, convert it to wave, then send it via one of the audio channels on the phone, and using an 3.5mm-to-RCA cable (like the one used for Nokia handsets) the audio can be used to deliver the message to the TV or sth, there is another option which is to use the micro-USB port which can handle better signals, but that's digital, but again, there is a micro-USB-to-HDMI cables, and we can use one of them, and here we can send audio and video, so software can solve this, I can start building this kind of app but I'm not that good with mobile development, so if anyone is interested, lets do it! this would not be for Ace only but for many other gadgets..
I also heard that there's a custom ROM that can use the audio port for similar purpose, not sure if that's really possible, or if it's really true, Galaxy S can do that btw.
just a thought can it be done through usb?... i mean there are tv's and players which supports usb inputs like sdcards, pendrives.. but i guess this thing would be limited to playing videos on our sd cards.. (like we play the music through aux in ports).. and not the total output of our phone's display...
can anyone test the normal video playing through usb cable... i don't have a tv or player with usb support..
Hey guys jus found thid video on one on the website...d guy was able to have an tv output on ace here is the video

There is a lag between devices because its usb not HDMI

Sorry guys this app made by me is deleted because it
posed a risk of burning gpu and very laggy.
So I cannot release it.

Wow, that's pretty good job! Seems like we need a high-end phone to do this without risk.
There are cables on ebay. How well they work is another question. Why would you want to do this?

[Q] HDMI Audio out only on left channel ?

As the other thread is set as [solved], I made a new one, as it is not solved for me...
To check what happens I got me the left/right test track from binkster.net
And it definitely puts all audio on the left channel, the left channel data a lot quieter than the right channel data, but everything together onto the left front channel.
I guess the receivers show 5.1 because the hdmi data is indeed a 5.1 channel format, just without any sound on most of its channels. And I believe the reason it works on some TVs, is that they just detect a mono signal and put it on all speakers, or they only have one speaker in the first place.
As the audio and hdmi HW is inside the Tegra 3 SoC and the same test file plays fine on the same hdmi setup with my Tegra 2 LG P990 phone with microHDMI out, I doubt this is a hardware problem, but that Asus somehow uses the mixed up mono signal from its own single speaker as output over hdmi as well...
But maybe I am wrong, is there anyone who actually gets this left/right test to play "left" on the left speaker and "right" on the right speaker ?
I marked my thread as "solved" because I found (notes in the thread) that the prime and cable "work". But they don't "work correctly" for all connected displays. Some didn't work at all, some didn't have correct audio (as you have). Some worked perfectly. Maybe "solved" is not correct. "Understood" would be better.
My TV doesn't have correct audio either, but at least I know where the problem is. And I could buy a new TV if I had the $$.
I have opened a case with ASUS and hope to get some more info from them later this week after the holidays are well behind us.
I suggest you open a case with ASUS as well to motivate them.
Good luck.
Is there a way to look into the audio configuration? Is it alsa? Maybe they mix channels to mono there?
I poked around with various market apps and couldnt find any info.
I haven't had time to look thru the kernel code. Hopefully ASUS will post an update.
NOTE: the audio is fine with some devices. So it doesn't appear (as I first wondered) that its a mixer problem.

I opened a case already, but I think it will not really help Asus much, actually more the opposite and confuses them rather, as I mixed up right with left in my report to them
Can you download the left/right test file from binkster.net by any chance and test it on those TVs where you thought it worked and listen closely if the two words actually come from the correct speakers or just from the middle of the TV ?
In the audio track, the word "left" is spoken only on the left speaker and the word "right" on the right speaker
Thanks !

I haven't found any audio options except volume. If there are any, I would be thankful if someone can point me to the right menu to access them.
Today's update fixed my audio problems. I hadn't previously checked with my Samsung c8000 3d led TV, but I was having left channel and center only audio from my Onkyo tx-nr 809 avr. Now I'm hearing audio from all channels both from my receiver and TV.

Yes, I just wanted to make sure the TVs did not "intelligently" spread out the mono signal onto both speakers, which could be verified by the test file.

peare,
Does the Onkyo controller app from the market work on the prime?
I am on 8.3.3.33 now and STILL got the mono sound problem.
I connect my TF Prime with my Onkyo TX-NR509 receiver, which is quite state of the art. Besides, I am using a very professional HDMI cable with 1.4 standard.
Sound is only playing on the left and the center channel.
Anybody heard something from ASUS regarding this issue?

Not for me. Audio was working perfectly until I installed ICS now I don't get ANY sound over HDMI.
Has the output type changed or something? Perhaps my amp's settings need to be changed after the ICS update. There isn't a problem with the cable as the same file played ok from my computer using the same HDMI cable and input. A small chance the micro adapter is broken I suppose, but can't really test that as have no other input sources.

MHL, delays and input lag.

Hi all
Running foxhound 1.3, using galaxsih kernel, just popped my MHL cable in my TV.
Anyway needless to say its very cool. However its got a slight delay in input, making gaming a pain in the ass.
I'm using an official MHL cable, powering it with an official power pack and my tv is a beast, all post processing on the TV has been disabled and game mode has been activated, meaning that it should run as good as it can.
I think I've done as much as I can to bring the delay down to a minimum, but its still very noticeable , gaming is not very good because there is a noticeable delay, so anything that requires quick reactions is a no no.
Does anyone have any input about this? It would be superb to get this working well, its cost a few quid to buy all high grade components to set this up, its a shame that its fell at the last hurdle.
Any help would be great
Thanks.

Know that feel, bro.
I also bought the official samsung mhl adapter for s3 (int. edition). And guess what, this adapter gives out a signal of 1080p30Hertz
For real, wtf, is this, only 15 frames per second, videos are not really watchable, games not enjoyable, extreme lag on games, something that shouldnt be, but it is there.
I asked sammy bout that, they said I should send my phone to the service center cause it could be broken (hahaha -.-'') Or my adapter is maybe a faulty unit. I dont know. I have to test it with other s3s. Maybe the adapter doesnt work properly cause my phone is flashed (with system marked as changed and not official state, so I cant update via OTA).
I have to take some time this weekend to check it out, cause it would be really awesome, to play on my FHD tv nfs most wanted.

Dont be sending it back just yet, i've got several s3's in work and i'll be trying them out today, i've attempted it on my two tv's (both Tv's switched to game mode for fastest response time) A Panasonic viera 3DTV, and an LG 3DTV, both top of the line. My HD cables are gold plated high grade 2 metre cables, the MHL is also Official.
I don't believe it's the handset at all.
I think it's just a crap job done at mirroring.
I honestly don't want 1080p, i just wanted 720p, i wanted it to mirror whats on the handset pixel for pixel.
It doesn't need to render it twice, just mirror the one set ffs.
Samsung are terrible for this, there is about half a second lag on my TV, playing tekken was sh** and lagged, on the s3 it was rapid.
Does anyone else have any input on this?
Tried i don't know how many TV's and all have similar results.
Surely it can compete with the like of apple when it comes to getting your device on TV

I've tried it with omega and its the same. I also tested with different TVs, 5 in total and different cables too. 3 in total. And two different HDMI cables.
Maybe its just bad luck. I'll attempt it with another ROM.
Have you used the MHL cable yourself? What results did you have ? I'm aiming at gaming more than anything.
Cheers.

I've just received a MHL adapter, it's not the Samsung official one though.
I don't have any noticeable input lag but I can see it's always running at 30fps.
That's easy to notice while playing emulators (Sonic on megadrive/genesis ).
I tested it on my Samsung 1080p TV, it gives a 1080p output at 30Hz which I think is the maximum possible with this MHL technology atm.
So, I thought "let's try this on the 720p TV I've got downstairs, maybe it will run at 60FPS".
And... no, still 30FPS at 720p.
I was wondering if it was a cheap MHL fault and if the Samsung official one would run faster, what do you guys think? you always have 30fps as well?

Not sure what mine runs at, all I know is that it cost £27 and its nowhere near as good as the iphone one, which pisses me off as I can't stand it when apple has something over android.
That aside, I think the s3 and this mhl technology should work well, but as far as I can see, besides simple browsing and movies, gaming isn't all that good. Infact unless your playing solitaire or pool or something, its not possible. Was playing real racing and although it looks amazing, the delay is just so noticable.
Tekken 3 on epsxe was unplayable and it lagged.
Haven't tried it since the 4.1.2 update but I can't see it moving ahead a lot. Will test it again and see how I go.

Would be good to know how as the delay and lag is a killer.
Great for movies crap for games.
I found his github with the commit but the files are not similar to what we have on I9300.

Hello
Got a Galaxy note 2, stock ROM JB 4.1.2, with samsung official GS3/GN2 11pin adapter. I have the same problem with the official smartdock and the Juice Defender 5 in 1 MHL Connection Kit.
I have the same problem described by the OP: Output seems to be 1080p.
But about an half second lag that just make games impossible to play on a TV. And that is also easy to see when I open app on the home screen.
Do you really confirm you have no delay ?
If yes I would be really interested in having the ref of your adapter.
30fps or 720p would be just fine for me if I at least I got no delay.
Note: And in addition, I can see with emulators such as N64oid the rendering is much better on my phone screen than on my TV (that's blured and pixelated), what is not the case in other apps (homescreen, video player, ...).
UPDATE 06/05/2017:
The delay was caused by a setting on my TV.
I noticed the same delay when I connected the TV to my PC. After having enabled the PC mode on the TV, the delay disappeared.
I have not rechecked with the phone and the MHL adapter, but I am now pretty sure the delay should be solved now.
Sorry for this false alarm.

Hi, I checked my cable and where I bought it but it's hard to answer.
There is just "HDTV adapter" written on it and no reference at all.
The shop I bought it from has a different adapter on the picture now, so I think they send whatever they have atm.
The price is higher too...
Sorry can't really help here.
I also suspect different TV can have more or less input lag with an MHL connected (and they already have different input lag natively btw).
Bad technology...
Thanks for your answer anyway.
In fact that cannot come from the TV, since my TV (like almost all) is not MHL enabled, meaning there are only regular MHL inputs.
Of course there is a small delay on all TVs, but there is a really big difference between the phone and the PC, if I connect it on the same HDMI input.
So the delay could only come from the MHL to HDMI bridge or to the phone itself.
stock kernel may help fix the mhl delay.i use stock rom with kernel and stock launcher. i do not have mhl issues. also nova launcher may cause mhl to not work
OK, but actually I use a GN2 stock ROM JB 4.1.2. Are you in JB 4.2 ? Or maybe there is difference between S3 and GN2...

[Q] Bluetooth Streaming Issue

Hi, I am having issues with bluetooth music streaming with this phone. I have a Tunelink dongle in my car which works perfectly fine with my GS2. However with OG I get very noticeable background noise and music skips every 15-20 seconds which is the worst part. I have not tested this with another BT device yet, but was wondering if anyone had a similar issue?
I'm getting this same issue with my tunelink. I have the Sprint variant..
Could it be that tunelink isn't working properly? Have you tried any other bluetooth devices?

What version of Bluetooth does Tunelink use? Maybe it's an older version (like 1.0) that the OG doesn't support.
I just got a email back from TuneLink
Hi Josh
Unfortunately we don't have an Optimus G to test with. I looked up the specs and it says that it runs Android version 4.0.4 with a planned upgrade to 4.1.2. What I know is that we did experience difficulties with Bluetooth on early versions of the Android 4.0 series but for the most part, they appeared to be fixed with 4.0.4 but I can't say that that's true for all Android devices as the Bluetooth hardware differs from device to device. The one thing they all have in common is that all Android Bluetooth drivers need to be able to integrate with the BlueZ Bluetooth protocol stack of the kernel. That said, if the audio is skipping, maybe try closing all unused apps to free up resources and see if that makes a difference. If you're streaming over the internet, try playing music locally. If possible try it with another A2DP Bluetooth device. I will put the word out around here and see if we can get an Optimus G to test as well. I would also send an email to LG's support and ask them if they have any known issues with A2DP. Note that if your TuneLink has firmware version 1.2.0 or greater then it supports Bluetooth version 4.0 minus the low power option. Prior versions support Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR. Also we only support the SBC codec.
Thanks
Mark

Apparently the ESS DAC is only triggered with the stock app. Maybe someone here have the knowledge to unlock that ?

Qualcomm Snapdragon DAC
The standard DAC in the Qualcomm Snapdragon SOC is mediocre at best. I use a pair of Sennheiser Momentums to test sound quality between my devices as they're easily driven by cellular audio DACs. Comparing the Note 4's Snapdragon 805 DAC to the Wolfson chip in the Exynos 7420 in the Note 5 is like night and day. Not only is it much louder, the details are far cleaner with highs, mids and lows better represented. Even with the d*mn good Sound Alive equalizer in the Note 4, the audio is recessed juxtaposed to the Wolfson chip. Without having tested the Vivo Hi-Fi DAC, I'd still have to give the overall win to HTC in terms of headphone audio quality. They never revealed the DAC, but it's leagues better than the S5 which had the same chipset.
Why is it only limited the the stock player? I'm confused. I thought it was for all sound output
Hmm that's pretty dissapoinying if what the reviewer says about the dac is correct. The m9 is great, but I would assume a significant upgrade with the sabre dac.
Wonder why only the standard music app can access the dac?

I guess the good sound quality comes from a good quality AMP that goes along with the DAC......A good amp allow headphones to give their full potential

That is not right. I have listened the 24-bit tune that comes with the phone using both the stock Music Player and Google Play Music and both sound exactly alike.
Also, when you are using Hi-Fi, and icon shows in the top bar, and it happens with both the stock Music Player and Google Play Music.
I think flashmp3 should really clarify his sources, because based on evidence, what he says is just not true.

It's talked about in this audio review on Head-Fi:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/785335/lg-v10-hi-fi-audio-quality-review-on-serious-audio-performance
The op of that thread verified that the additional DAC is only functional on the LG app.
Exactly........that was my source. I should have precised it.......i thought that people talking in this thread here were the same talking in the LG V10 thread on Head-Fi as both are concerned by audio quality

Listening to Google Play Music, I still see the Hi-Fi icon. In fact, it lights on right after you connect headphones, no matter if you are playing any music or not.
The sound amplification does not change no matter which player I use: Stock or Play Music. I have tested it listening with some pretty good headphones, and using the 24-bit sample provided by LG.
The only way I can think neither of us is wrong, is that the latest update (1 week ago) has enabled it for all the players and the review on the Hi-Fi forum was on the firmware before the update?
I have a F600S, but I do not think the exact phone variant will make a difference on this.

From reading some of the Head Fi discussion, I'm not sure that the OP "verified" that the additional dac only works with the LG app. The poster seems to believe strongly that it's the case. There's no concrete evidence given, in my opinion.

That would make my day if it is patched. I want this phone so bad.
I have been using the V10 for the better part of two days. It sounds damn good. Mostly of my music is 24/96 and 16/44 FLAC files
I typically run my note 4 with an Apex Glacier. This will definitely be replacing that setup.
I didn't honestly use anything other then the stock music player. It sounds amazing as is so didn't bother trying anything else. I can load PowerAmp in the morning and check though.
