4.4.2 TW Rom? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I'm currently rooted and running CM11 but missing all the camera features. Is there a 4.4 TW rom out there? Id like to try TW again as I haven't messed with it since the day I got my phone.

We won't have one for Verizon until they push the 4.4 ota out to us and the devs get their hands on it.

I've been running Vision-X from the ATT S4 forums for a few days. It's based on XXUFNB9, which is one of the TW 4.4.2 OTA's for the International S4. It was running pretty well, and had no issues. I literally just flashed Goldeneye, which is also based on an international S4 OTA. I've had no issues and have noticed a slight speed increase.
Important note, after flashing Vision-x, I had to flash loki-doki to Loki the kernel or it would not boot. This is assuming you are on an MDK bootloder.

Good to know I forgot to look into the international ones. I usually stick to stay I see on our forums. Thanks for sharing though

Me too, but Verizon is taking too long to release a 4.4 base, so I figured why not look elsewhere.

I tried a couple different things yesterday with the same out come. First I restored to my original 4.2 stock rooted rom and had no volume so I went back to CM11. Later in the day I flashed Hyperdrive 4.3TW rom and had the same deal, no volume. Is there something special I need to do when coming from 4.4 AOSP to 4.2/4.3 TW rom to make the volume work?

Please explain to me how you got a KK TW ROM to work? I am running the ported 4.4.2 GE but I actually miss TW.

I vaguely remember reading in one of the other carrier's S4 forum that no sound after flashing a rom is related to being on either the wrong bootloader, or wrong kernel. If you flashed Hyperdrive, it's safe to assume the kernel is correct. What bootloader are you on? Not sure this applies to the VZW S4. It may only apply to the TMobile, or other GSM variants.

Right now I'm running Goldeneye from the i9505 section. Loving it. You need to be on the MDK bootloader with a recovery installed. I'm using Philz Touch recovery. Flash the Goldeneye ROM, then flash a Loki-Doki. That should be it. Both are linked below.

From what i gathered he just flashed the rom + Loki Doki which Lokis the kernel that comes with that rom.
Since Verizon doesn't officially have 4.4 yet there aren't any 4.4 TW kernels for it yet . as far as i know.

I will let you guinea pig it for me. Let me know if all is well after flashing. My worry is that I am on a i545 but I use it with T-Mobile. So I can't use some ROMs like cm11 will not allow me to use cellular data at all. Even FC's when I attempt to make a call or hang up.

Well it worked and no boot loops so that's good. But just like my other experiences I have no volume. Any suggestions? I flashed the MDK nohlos modem before I flashed. I was on MJ7 for CM11
edit: Just realized I flashed the MDK modem only and not the nonhlos version. Will try again with correct MDK nonhlos in a bit

Well not having done what you're doing now I have to admit I'm guessing...
You could try an APN app from the play store as long as you have WiFi now. There's one I've used that will get the Verizon apns and set them. Don't remember the name of it however.
Gigilie has compatibility packs I've been looking into over on one his Roms he ported over for our phones.. I'm not really sure what they include but I know people flashing i9505 Roms had something they would also flash to get everything going. Whether or not the apns are part of it again I'm not sure.
The other person on here didn't make mention of flashing anything but the Loki doki so I'm not 100% maybe he can chime in.

New S4 owner - safestrap/ROM questions

So I am a new S4 owner and have rooted my phone and installed Safestrap. I'm on the 4.3 MK2 build and would like to flash a ROM with SS.
My question is, can I flash any rom once I create a new rom slot or are only certain ones compatible. If so is there a list so I don't brick my phone.
I really just want to make some tweaks like in 3minit. Can I flash the 3minit framework with SS and use that?

A very close one is Eclipse S4 TW Edition. I am running it now, but have the same problem as explained here.. I created 1 rom slot for this rom and now have no internal storage space available. All my storage seems to be in System Memory under Miscellaneous files, but I can't expand that any to see what is using it...
My thoughts are leaning towards having to wipe the phone completely and restoring a nandroid backup to the Stock slot, to be able to get full internal storage access using a custom rom. Little weary of doing that as i love the benefit of having the stock rom available if any problems arise, but don't have any space to do anything at the moment. Been posting on Eclipse's forum and also the safestrap forum hoping to get an answer from previous experiences, but it is not looking good...
I appreciate the devs and others around that help us newbies out when these challenges arise.

Yea, already have one of those. Soft bricked the phone week 1 of having it... I know that functionality exists now and works beautifully, just really was hoping there was another solution and not be a worrisome burden on the forums... I like the challenges and the learning experiences that come along with performing such tasks, but never want to lose a device in the process. I guess if all failed, I could go back to my dusty iPhone 5s.

First thing anyone who is going to mod/hack their phones should do is download the correct stock firmware for their phone, download Odin, get all the drivers needed on the computer and just be ready in case the phone does get bricked. Takes less than 10 minutes to unbrick a phone when everything is in place

i545 Tmobile guys I need some testers

I know there are not alot of us around here, but I know of a few guys that are running a Verizon S4 with A T-Mobile SIM card.
I have been running Verizon ROMS and getting 95% functionality. Service is weird, but works most of the time with a few area's that I have to manually go into gsm mode to keep data. BUT I may have found a work around for all of it.
I am running a the i9505 4.4.2 TW ROM GoldenEye, nothing was changed in the ROM to make it work better with Verizon. I posted a thread to let other people know about it here and it is working for some, and it is failing for others with APN problems, but it was/is 100% working for me with no changes to settings at all. I installed, Loki-Dokied, and booted up to 4G automatically running. I got LTE by changing one word in the APN.
SO I need a couple guys who are running a T-Mobile sim in their i545 to test this method for me and see if I just got really lucky or if we have a winner here.
I will put the how to in the next thread.
***I take no credit for the work on this ROM or the Loki-Doki fix***
**I take no responsibility for you phone becoming a paper weight**
*You preform this at your own risk*
:highfive:
#1 You must be on the MDK boot loader, radio's don't matter but newer radio's seem to have a more stable connection.
#2 Do a Nandroid, you can never be to carful
#3 Do a full clean wipe like your supposed to...
#4 Flash GOLDENEYE VERSION 24 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2427629 (The ROM)
DO NOT REBOOT (you will get an unauthorized boot loop)
#5 Flash http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23329332407577109 (The Loki-Doki)
#6 Reboot and let it sit for 5 or 6 minutes
#7 ????
#8 PROFIT
Report back here with any info or updates you guys have. I have tried a couple other i9505 ROMs with limited success but working together we might find some other ROMs this method works with. Also in the ROM thread iB4STiD has included links to remove a lot of bloat and additional mods.
To get LTE go into your APN settings adn change "epic.T-Mobile.com" to "fast.T-Mobile.com" The data icon wont change to LTE, but I am getting 26 Mbps
Give credit where it is due:
The ROM was created by: iB4STiD
Loki-Doki was created by: TheAxman
Both cool guys who gave me the go ahead to post their work.

I'm aware of what the bootloader is, yes. But this is an i9505 ROM so it won't boot with the i545 without getting the unauthorized Verizon software screen. It was to my knowledge that the i9505 bootloader was removed to avoid this.
And I am on the MDK bootloader in case you were wondering.

If you read the thread for the EagleEye ROM in the OP's second or third post he mentions that the bootloader is not included. That is why I origionaly had it in my OP my lack of sleep and my smoking habits didnt allow the info to sink in right away while I was typing. I was in the process of editing my OP when you posted originally.
ROM's do not include the boot loader. Your bootloader if MDK will stay MDK no matter what ROM you flash.

Roms do not have bootloaders, your phone does. Which was my point. If you have an mdk phone you have an exploitable bootloader. They are not packaged in the rom nor can they be removed from the phone. I just find it interesting that someone posting a ROM for testers ( as well as you, the tester ) doesn't seem understand this....

Haha, my warranty is nonexistent as I bought the phone outright from swappa and am now on T-Mobile. I understand the gist of what having the MDK bootloader means along with how great it is to have the exploit djrbliss made available to us. Just never knew that bootloaders weren't attached to ROMs lol, but now I know. Again, many thanks for giving this noob some much needed insight .

I am by no means a developer, I am just a dumb ass who stumbled onto something that works for me through trial and error and listening to other dumb asses who tried stuff on their phones, and I was hoping it would work for others. Test it, don't test it, what ever.
To be honest I have no idea what a boot loader is, I know what boot loader I am on and I know that some smart guy exploited it to allow us to replace the software with something some other smart guy came up with. I know that the newer ones haven't been exploited like mine and that's why they can't do as much as MDK guys can. Hell I don't even really know what safestrap does but from my razr days I know it allows people to install different ROMs.
Bottom line, I am just a guy using other peoples work to try to help some other people not "error" as much as I have and enjoy their device a little bit more...

SO I need a couple guys who are running a T-Mobile sim in their i545 to test this method for me and see if I just got really lucky or if we have a winner here.
I will put the how to in the next thread.

I'm running on TMobile. I actually have been since we first started discussing the 4.4 TW roms on the i545. I've had no issues and didn't have to enter any APN settings.
The ROMs we are flashing, Goldeneye for instance, do not include the bootloader. If we were flashing Samsung images then bootloaders and modems would probably be included, and would probably brick the phone since we'd be flashing incorrect sw. That said, as long as you are on the MDK bootloader, exploited by Loki, and running a custom recovery, then following the steps in the OP should work for you. If you get stuck in a bootloop, it's probably a kernel error. Loki-doki should solve that for you. If not, that's why you have your Nandroid back right

FYI guys, I just flashed ktoonez Touchwiz Kit Kat Kernel. I took it from the Tmobile thread since there isn't a Verizon one yet. You need to flash loki-doki after flashing this kernel. So far no issues. I'll report back if I find any issues.

I am going to DL and flash soon as I get off work.
Seems to be working for me...
I am using a t-mobile SIM and am still on MDK. I followed the instructions in the OP, and the phone appears to be working. No other mods, themes, etc. other than the OP. SMS, MMS, Data all appear to work. Speeds seem consistent with LTE, but no way to know.
On initial boot, however, I always get this message: "Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped". However, after accepting the message, the phone appears to work normally. It may have something to do with the dark dialer theme that appears to be part of this ROM. I have seen that message before...

[Q] Illusion for MK2!

Those on MK2 With safe strap and want to get rid of Touch Wiz ( which I do -.-) Get the Illusion ROM for your Galaxy S4 (Verizon). That's all. Except the only bug/s is WiFi doesn't even if you try flashing the MK2 Module's. And those On AT&T, T-Mobile, Straight Talk, NET10... Etc using there Verizon Galaxy S4 will not get Data to work. I have Straight talk and tried everything to get Data to work. I've flashed all Carrier Roms (the AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, and U.S. Cellular) together and see if that would help. Nope. But Messaging (just SMS) works and so does calls and Voice Mail (xD)
And if someone could extract this and try making another AOSP ROM that works with MK2 (or SafeStrap) and make CM11/10 to work, that would be excellent!
Credit for the ROM goes to the Developer. I am not endorsed with the development/developer nor do I hold responsible for your phone being a toaster

How is a 4.2 ROM compatible with MK2, and how is it compatible with Safestrap? Not to mention the thread hasn't been updated since July...

Its 4.2...mk2 is 4.3...is it possible to flash 4.2 modules on latest safestrap?...this is pretty cool to see even partially working aosp for SS users...might make a point of getting hashcodes attention on this...he may be able to fix WiFi and such or figure out what's allowing it to work and implement it in other ROMs...nice find
I was bored, so I started installing random ROMs and Walla... A AOSP ROM working!
And I Dont know... Crazy things happen in Life O.O

Possibly
If they could break down this rom and figure out how it works with safestrap we could possibly get all asop roms working:laugh::good:
And if I had a debit card I'd give all my money to the person that breaks it down

If you guys are on 4.2.2, it would make since if it was a gpe rom, as gpe was somehow compatible with 4.2.2 safestrap. If I remember correctly, someone said that the differences between the kernels was negligible and could boot with the tw kernel.
I would say its safe to assume that its actual AOSP seeing that it uses the CM kernel source (or at links to it on the OP), however, there are no accounts in the thread of the rom cook saying that it is AOSP, only other posters.
Haven't tried to download it yet, but I'm going to convince myself that you guys are just pulling a sick April fools prank.

Well so far it's AOSP ROM. It has pure android, the weight of the zip is so light and if. And yes, A Dev did say it wasn't compatible with any AOSP ROM's. But I found a ROM that works! I'll post some screen shots of the AOSP ROM. And if it says AT&T its because I have a Straight Talk Sim Card in it.
So far people are eager with this. If we can get more people's attention we can probably get Hashcode to see what's making this ROM work on AOSP

Well that happened to me as well. It wouldn't boot up to the system so I booted up to the actual Odin Flash and it said Volume Up=Continue and Volume Down=Cancel(Restart) and then I did the Volume down and it got into the system. Well I hope that helps!

Which AOSP ROM?

I'm on MDK and I've never tried a non-touchwiz ROM. I want to now. I'd appreciate if you guys could tell me what the most popular / mainstream / well developed AOSP ROM is for the Verizon s4. I think I'd like to start my AOSP journey there.
Also, are the current crop of AOSP ROM fully functional? Or are there still some features of the S4 that aren't supported?
Thanks in advance.

Think I answered you in another thread about this topic but.. Try Mahdi, C ROM , Liquid Smooth, AICP ... They've all treated me well. They'll all run differently though for people so you'll just have to flash away and report back in their threads. Also I highly recommend using KToonsez AOSP-Kit Kat kernel with those. It's been nothing but stable for me.
Good luck!

I thought AICP couldn't be used with Safestrap? I'm about to downgrade from 4.4.2 so I can root my phone but from everything I've seen you have to use safestrap to do so... which would effectively destroy being able to use AICP.

Gotcha.. I'm new to rooting so I'm still trying to learn everything I can sorry about that. Every Verizon S4 I've seen people have used Safestrap on the SCH-I545. So I'm assuming that MDK is merely a different build correct?

Hey no problem!
MDK is the build that the Verizon S4 first shipped with and it allowed for a bootloader exploit called Loki which let's us run custom recoveries... Thus allowing AOSP ROMs like the ones I mentioned.

[Q] Custom Recovery wont Load

I have an SCH-i545 and It was recently on NK1, I downgraded to NC5 and used towelroot. Did a factory wipe from the recovery, but now I cant get either TWRP or CWM to load? It only uses the stock samsung/verizon recovery, and this is not letting me flash any custom rom. Did I miss a step somewhere? I've got SuperSU installed aswell.

Any firmware THAT IS NOT MDK doesn't have a bootloader unlock. TWRP, CWM, Phillz will not work. Only Safestrap does.

You can flash stock based Roms with safestrap still. You just can't flash a non stock kernel. Which means stock Roms only.
I ended up going with the cleaned stock nk1 and I'm digging it, once I get on my pc and can search better I'll go with eclipse perhaps. The Wi-Fi won't turn on though, gonna head over to that post and figure it out. =) thanks again

That's not entirely true. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/development/rom-kitpop-v1-0-t3019132
