New MHL 3.0 adapter necessary? - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The z2 has the new MHL 3.0 standard included. Does that mean you have to own a new MHL 3.0 compatible adapter (MicroUSB to HDMI) or will all benefits from MHL 3.0 still work with older adapters/cables?

i think it may have its own ports, hdmi or mhl like older xperias
have you tried emailing sony support team?

Clove's review:
http://blog.clove.co.uk/2014/03/11/sony-xperia-z2-review/
states that the old MHL adapter will work, but at least some of the new 3.0 features like 4k will not work. They also say the 3.0 adapter isn't available yet. They are not clear on which if any new 3.0 features will work with the old adapter.
Sorry, guess that's not too helpful.

would be nice if they included a mini HDMI out like xperia s
Well i think they may fix that with the Z3 or Z4
xD

Did not work with my Galaxy S2 Micro-USB to MHL Adapter :-(
So I guess the answer is : No.

Hdmi out...feel like a noob

I can't seem to wrap my head around this... I have a mini hdmi that I've used for my Evo 4G but how in the hell do get hdmi out for the View? No where in the manual but everyone talks about it online. Is the mhl cable different from the hdmi mini?

Yes the MHL is an adapter box , different vs. the mini HDMI and MHL is required to connect to HDMI.
For example here is an adapter. There are cheaper generic adapters that work just fine as well.

Ridiculous, always a new adapter or cord. Thanks

actually very common, most tablets do it that way including Samsung and Moto
You can get the same adapter at monoprice for $10 I believe

No, there is no HDMI support for that
If you think that its not suppose to be for devices without a HDMI port then thats incorrect
The HTC EVO 3D has HDMI support but no HDMI port
Strange but yeah, sometimes the unexpected is expected.

Kinda confused by that post... Sorry. But Yeah the exp has hdmi support and so do a few other phones like the rezound... They require an Mhl adapter to be used for hdmi. I was just wondering if the same applies to this tablet

The Sony Tablet S or P does not support MHL.
so does this mean there's no capabilities for an external display on the sony tablet s??

Wait, what if someone can place such kernel modules onto the Sony Tablet S?
Will it work?
Or is it something to do with hardware?

If your display/TV has DLNA capabilities, it works like a charm.
If it doesn't, you can add to your TV something like DLNA-enabled Blu Ray player or Android stick.
Bingo, problem solved. External display works just fine.
Sorry to reply to this old threat, but I was searching gsmarena specs, and in sony tablet S 3G it says "TV out via MHL", but not for the non-3G version. I had the impression that besides the cellular chip there were no other differences..
Did something change with ICS update?
Cause I'm ready to get an MHL adaptor as I actually need HDMI out.

The only difference between the 3G variant and the WiFi variant is that the 3G version has an add in modem which plugs into a socket (If I'm not mixing up devices), and firmware. There is no MHL support.

I hear you, I agree with you, but here it says
TV-out (via MHL A/V link)

and that's why I'm wondering if something changed or the 3G model indeed has something different

That specification is erroneous. The Sony Tablet S does not support MHL.

Possible fault with output: Resolved

Hello all
Just asking for help as to if anyone think my Nexus 10 has a fault.
I've not managed to get USB off or HDMI out working.
I bought what I thought would be a good USB otg cable but it won't work.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Samsung-E.../400320687174?ssPageName=ADME:L:eek:C:GB:3160
Also I bought an micro HDMI to HDMI cable and again it won't work
I've ordered alternatives of both cables but my worry is that it is my N10 and not the cables.
Anyone else had problems?
Sent from my Nexus 10 using XDA Premium HD app
It seems to me that it would be more likely that the problem is how you are setting it up or with whatever else you are trying to connect to.
Have you used the otg/micro hdmi cables on a different device?
New cables have resolved the issue, couldn't believe that both cables of different types were the problem.

You need the mhl adapter. I picked one up off Amazon for 8

Make sure you get an adaptor that is for either a Note 2 or a Galaxy S3, the older adaptors that look identical will not work with either of these phones.
I had an adaptor for my Rezound that looks exactly the same plug wise etc but it won't work for the newer Samsung phones.

This is correct. Samsung went with an 11 pin micro USB-HDMI MHL for the Galaxy SIII and the Galaxy Note II. This allows for simultaneous HDMI out and usage of OTG input. Unfortunately the official Samsung MHL adapter doesn't even have the OTG port lol meaning the improvement going to 11 pin gives, they don't even give to you.
Oh well, still highly recommend going with an official cable. I don't trust the 3rd party products as I always had problems with them, especially when it came to MHL.

I agree with that 100%
I can confirm what you are saying here. I have been unable to use my OTG and HDMI out at the same time. I'm guessing your option is to get the smart dock if you need to use them both simultaneously. I have not found a MHL adapter with the proper passthrough or vice versa with the OTG (even tried the "with usb power" variant)
