[Q] Galaxy S3 + JVC KW-V50BT + MHL/HDMI + DAC - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I have recently ordered the new JVC KW-V50BT multimedia receiver.
I currently own a Samsung Galaxy S3. I bought this JVC receiver because it supports MHL/HDMI which allows you to control the phone fullscreen. Video goes via HDMI or MHL2.0 (the latter the S3 doesn't support to my knowledge). Audio goes via Bluetooth pairing.
I picked up the EPL-3FHUBEGSTD adapter for the S3 and put a separate micro usb charger in the car to connect it to. HDMI from the adapter will go to the HDMI in on the radio, which I believe should work. If I ever upgrade the phone to an MHL2 compatible one I should be able to go without the adapter completely using an HDMI to MHL adapter JVC sell for this unit.
If all of the above works correctly I should be able to run Sygic navigation on the S3 with instructions both on the 7" screen and via the car speakers via bluetooth, using A2DP. I plan on filling a USB stick with music files, and connecting that to the USB in on the radio, which I'm sure will work fine.
I am just wondering if there is a way to improve upon the audio output from the phone so streaming from the phone like from Qobuz can be done as well.
I guess bluetooth will work for this also, but is it technically possible to get a better sound quality, like using an external DAC?
I read some DIY threads on using the micro usb port.
Could I in theory do that, but still split things so HDMI keeps going to the head unit? Or will using the micro USB out for audio like this kill off the HDMI output? Any other suggestions?
Many thanks in advance!
RD

Hey sorry to not answer your question but where did you find that model. Everywhere I've looked it is still on pre order.

I'm in the Netherlands, mine is also still on pre-order. It was listed as available/in stock at an online store, after which I went to a local dealer to ask whether they could supply it also (as I also wanted them to install it for me).
They contacted JVC Netherlands who denied the shop could have it in stock already because it hadn't been released yet.
JVC said it would be an early April release, and they promised one of the first units to go to my dealer. The smaller model (30BT) is already available, the 50BT should be there the first or second week of April.
In the meantime I've answered my own question; I assumed Bluetooth would be used for audio as is the case with some previous models with Mirrorlink.
This is however not the case as audio simply goes via MHL/HDMI. Since that doesn't degrade audio I'm confident this will work perfectly for me.

Charging and audio (Y) cable in one? [Hermes]

Hi all,
I've not got my Hermes variant yet, but would like to ask if anyone plans on using this device in the car for example; with the need to charge AND have audio out going to the car speakers.
Since there is only one connector for both charging and audio, is there some sort of 'Y' cable that 'separates' the two connections?
Thanks.
Brodit has an adapter with just charging feature:

I have just written an email to them if they could put an audio out cable as well. I will update if I get any information.

Yes, I remember seeing that one...
I would have thought more people may have wanted such an adapter- but obviously not. This is something I would use in my car all the time.
Hi Guys,
Have you considered the 'parrot' car phone kit options? They come in a variety of options, basically each is a Bluetooth car kit, that bonds with your device, transfers the contacts, mutes your cars radio, and pumps telephone calls through the car speakers also, it is in every way a fully working car kit for the Xda range.
I am biased as I retail and install them, but every customer i do installs for, they absoultey love them, as they also bond with upto 5 devices so other phones can be used as well, ie a works phone,

You should really fix your site to work with Firefox. It gives the error
Code:
Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Library
The plug-in performed an illegal operation. You are strongly advised to restart Firefox
with Firefox 1.5.0.6 with Noscript 1.1.4.1
Well I think it may be your fault because I've never seen the error before and it is reproduceable.

Would these parrot kits route the [musical] audio from my device to the car speakers then? I dont really need a BT carkit since I always have my personal BT handsfree on. My main requirements are those as listed in my original post.
Thanks Ill pass on the notes to the web guy, i use firefox and IE and works fine, is it the How it Works video?
No, it wont route music through your car, not that I have found yet,
You'd need it to support A2DP to play music too. As far as I know there's no headphone support only headset. At least it's only headset on mine.
The Parrot kits and the TyTn
To Bryson:
I have a CK 3000 that has worked fine with all of my phones. However, according to a different thread there seems unfortunately to be a problem with the Tytn and some (all?) of the Parrot kits.
Hi,
Ive yet to test parrot gear with a tytn / hermes etc - nhave you been over to the parrot forums to see if anyone has posted regarding this issue there?
Sorry i cant be of more help,
Bryson!
My parrot works sweelty with my Tytn and my Strtrk. I have the CK3000 unit too.
Y cable wanted!
I want a Y cable too!
Split into audio out, mic in, charge.
Preferably in a brodit carholder!
I'm sure someone can make this, now the phone is sold in Japan, lot's of japanese will want to use their own headsets, so I hope they will invent some nice cables
Im also looking for this same adaptor, so I can charge the device in the car while the adioo output can be used for satnav.
Anyone know of such an adaptor ? (Y cable)
I posted on the Wiki that a Y cable is soon to be available from Expansys. http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=140425.

Ah nice one, I knew this would be something people would want. But why HTC couldn't integrate this on the device in the first place still baffles me!
This is only my humble opinion.
When I first knew that the TyTn, followed by the next coming other HTC's PPCs (Trinity. Artemis), would not have the regular audio port anymore (Regardless the size, 2.5 mm or 3.5 mm), I was thinking they must be really stupid by taking that away. Since my first PPC, I have been always plug the audio/sound to my car stereo for MP3 and phone calls.
Then I tried to think about the logic, why would they take it away, they must have reasons, being such a high tech company. The most logical reason I can think of, they might want to design a good car kit /desktop cradle for it. Thus, by combining the audio port and the USB sync/charging port, they can create a cradle/car kit that would only have one connector to the PPC, instead of two connections/jacks: the USB and the audio pin. That might be a good idea, same idea like the earlier versions of the PPC, like Wallaby that had the serial connector that can be used for synching, charging, GPS, and audio input/output as well, all in the same connector.
But looking at the connector they made, the one posted above in the expansys, I'm kind of LOL really. 2 USB output, one for power, one for audio? Ha ha ha..
They /any third party, should have design a car cradle and a desktop cradle that not only have a regular USB for sync/power, but also just map out also the audio output to a regular 3.5 mm normal audio connection. And that cradle will be really useful and I would think many ppl will buy it. And for a plus side, just add a GPS module in the same car cradle unit, than its perfect solution.
Just my humble opinion...
Yes, I agree with the above post, what we now need is for someone to design both a desktop and car cradle, where it would have the 11pin, to which one would dock the device and the 5 & 6 pin on the underside.
This adapter is helpful, but it would be more helpful if accepted the standard 2.5/3.5mm plugs and power. I mean, come on, who's going to be listening in their car with headphones?

Yes good point. As it is, it would mean having to use this adapter to split the audio/charging and then use yet another adapter to convert the mini usb to 2.5/3.5 (if there is such as thing, seeing as the connection now would be the standard USB and not the 'square ended' one).

[Q] Video output on the Fascinate

Greetings Programs!
I currently have a 3.5mm to RCA cable which works for the Samsung Captivate, and it seems that Verizon removed video out support on the Fascinate. I have a rooted Fascinate, and I wanted to know if anyone is working on, or has successfully been get video output working on the device. I am 99% it is possible since I have looked in the 3.5mm jack and I see the video connector.
I was thinking that maybe a ROM based on another Galaxy S device may unlock the feature?
I was reading another thread on this same subject and others also seem to think that we have the same hardware in the jack. I would be willing to pet this feature will be implemented into a ROM as long as its possible, and I find that to be highly likely, as long as it does in fact have the hardware.
I am not a developer nor do I know if the captivate people have a system dump yet or not, but when they do and a ROM is cooked up, it should find its way to us fascinate users.
Heres a Captivate system dump... I am looking through it now to try to find anything useful. forum.xda-developers[DOT]com/showthread.php?t=730226
Any ROM developers here that want to add this to their ROM?
Even though I have no ideal how its supposed to charge the device Samsung says that a usb to hdmi is on its way. I would like a HD solution myself, but the RCA method mentioned here would do good if its a great deal cheaper than the $50 Dollar cable.

Where did you read this? I know that a couple of news briefs and blog posts said it was out, but I also heard that a Samsung rep (granted, this was on twitter ...) said that it was an error on their website, and that this particular cable (which I have not found a single real owner of one yet!) wasn't even originally meant for the GALAXY S devices.

Ive seen a few people in other galaxy s variant forums that ordered the cable and couldn't get it to work, Samsung was supposed to fix this with the froyo update, however, I ordered mine from daydeal and the day the order was supposed to ship I got an email from them saying that it had been recalled so they may have pulled the plug on hd out

Do a search for usb to hdmi. You will find a page called dealtime if I remember, that will lead to Samsung saying it doesnt work for the US models, but one is coming.
Well I don't need HDMI output... I am working on a project that needs RCA output.
Hopefully a custom ROM and/or the Froyo update will solve everything.
Check this out. If i had 20 bucks to try it out I would.
http://www.daydeal.com/product.php?productid=45332&cat=5155
From what I was told all you had to do was plug it in and whatever showed up on the phone showed up on the TV.
I also heard that Samsung will officially be supporting this with the release of 2.2 which should be out by the end of October. A rep told me that it will be an app on the phone where you can display one thing on the tv while having another app open on the phone..
EXAMPLE: If you have a tv in your car you can play a movie on the tv, while looking at the navigation on the phone.
PS- I wont believe it, til I see it.
Got that cable for like 9.99
Won't work until someone ports tv out from another galaxy s variant, or we get 2.2.

tv out
Hey guys, im not a developer but the tv out through the 3.5mm jack works but only get sd quality. Heres how i got mine to work the cheapest way. I used my 3.5 mm jack cable to rca ends(red, yellow, white) cable. These usually come with your digital cameras or portable dvd players. Or get them at the dollar store for a few bucks. You have to pull the jack about 1-3 mm out after plugging it all the way in the headphone jack and then Switch the yellow (video) cord with either the white or red cord. Google it, theres been others with success and cheap. Cheers!

tv out
Im have the telus samsung fascinate. it works but only standard definition. the only setting you have to set is the "tv out" on the phone. "setting" ---> " display" ----> "tv out" switch to on. YOu can laugh all you want but im just trying to tell you that it works. Not all video rca jacks are the same. You have to try a couple. I actually bought one from the dollar store that works. As i said plug in the mini jack to rca like this one
once the mini jack is plugged in the phone, turn on the "tv out" setting in the phone. Then plug the red cord into the video input(yellow) of the tv. you will initially get a scrambled signal on the tv but slowly pull out the mini jack from the phone about 1-3 mm from the base. Its touchy and not perfect by any means but works. Until they come up with the video out on the usb socket then this will have to do. I doubt they will but you never know. cheers!
use this one i ordered it and it works fine

All of those docks use Bluetooth to stream the audio. From what I know the USB port on the bottom doesn't have the ability to natively send audio out of the pins. I would love to have a simple dock too for this phone that would let audio out without having to jack in on the top of the phone, but it's just not designed that way.
I used to have an ATT "Fuze" (touch pro) - used to have to carry a dongle everywhere with me to plug in headphones. I'm much happier that I don't need a dongle, but it does suck to have to plug in 2 things in the car to get audio and charge at the same time.

I use the car dock that is made for the phone by Samsung.
Best Solution:
Get a new car. My 2010 Mazda M3 has Bluetooth in it so all I had to do is buy a new car charger and connected it to Bluetooth. That's for your best experience though.
Less than the best solution:
Buy a Samsung Car dock, hope you have an AUX port or get an FM transmitter! It's a lot of work to have this done right, clean and everything. But it works! You can find most of the parts on amazon for really cheap. But i hope your car stereo has an Aux port or Bluetooth cuz if not you are kinda gonna be screwed into buying a new one. I don't know of any that support connecting through usb on any other phone than the iPhone or a standard flash drive with just MP3s on it.
Yea, my car has an AUX port, so I will just go buy the dock. Thanks for all your help
Hopefully another item like this takes off. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/401662159/pair-with-pear-bluetooth-to-your-speakers-dock Not trying to advertise, but this looks like it's exactly what you need. Unfortunately it doesn't exist yet... Unless another company makes one that I don't know about.
I highly recommend the Bluetooth Gateway by Motorola that turns your aux-in into an A2DP stereo like these fancy new cars.
A brief guide in the beginning of a little review I wrote here.
Takes a little DIY to get it set up out of the way, but once you do, it's a fantastic, under-$50 solution to get A2DP like the new $20k cars

I have the same, wonder why the quality suks
I just use a simple cable from my headphone jack to my aux in jack. I do wish it was able to display stuff like track info and album art, but hey, first world problems I guess. Poweramp does the job.
I think it's because bt audio only streams at 96 kbs.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app
I don't know why you're having problems, but my bluetooth audio sounds heavenly using the gateway that I referenced in my earlier post.
And by the way, this 2003 spec sheet lists a top bit rate of 345 kb/s on Bluetooth 1.0. I don't know where you got your number.
BT streaming is worse than wired because you've got your phone/player transceiver encoding, and then the external receiver decoding your music. You can have all the bandwidth in the world but you'd still be limited by the quality of your transmitting and receiving hardware's digital audio capabilities.
I have one of these, it works very well. I've used FM tuners before and they all come in static-y. This one comes in perfectly, can charge your phone, has audio IN, and can be used as a hands free phone. Pretty nifty.

Few questions before I buy honor 7

Hello lucky honor owners. I just fall in love woth h7 when i saw it and decided to buy it but...few questions without answers makes me wait.
1. Does honor 7 support MHL (media streaming over hdmi)? This is needed to connect the phone to pionier appradio.
2. Is audio quality good enough to ise it with high quality headphones?
3. Some reviews say something about pro mode camera update. Does anybody know when will it be updated?
Thanks for any help.
- 1 : no
-2 : no (need to flash a mod with root for better experience)
-3 : Already implemented in the béta MM 6.0
And if you like custom roms, mods etc............just forget this phone

1 - Nope. But you can get music from H7 through BT and also probably USB using the phone as mass storage, or even connecting the headphone plug to a AUX-in in the radio.
2 - What is your definition of High quality? The sound is good through a pair of RHA 750i, but doesn't come close to a Fiio X3ii. As any phone wouldn't come close to a good mainstream dedicated media player, not to mention pairing it with a portable amp.
3 - From B140 upwards.

Yes, I know. I have one who does that also. But you surely cannot control the phone from the HU (Head Unit). Probably you could if it was a iPhone, like my HU does. But that control is done through USB (special one for iPhone) as I recall. There is no HDMI control signal passing through, I believe.
You can control the radio, using steering wheel buttons if you have them. Just apply a CANBUS between the HU and the buttons, to decode the signals.
There is an app designed for pioneers appradio "ARunchained" it works with amy android with mhl. Phone streams video over hdmi and touchscreen of head unit works as phones screen. Touch signal wil be send by bluetooth and you can use your head unit in the same way as you ise your phone. The only thing is that you need mhl. I was using that with note 3 then lg g4 and now i have spare phone and looking for the next one. Thats why it made me sad that honor doestnt support mhl
