Suspected Wifi battery drain - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed a glitch that's developed on my phone recently. Let me describe the behavior after I hit the glitch: the first symptom that I recognize is that the LCD won't turn on as soon as I press the power button. It takes a random amount of time since the press: sometimes 3 seconds, sometimes longer, or even don't turn on at all. My only choice is then to pull the battery off! After the glitch is hit, the battery drains super fast.
The only correlation I've managed to muster is the Wifi. I think it happens if the Wifi goes down while the phone is connected. I think it also happens if I switch access points (for example when I move to one building to another at work).
It appears as if something related to Wifi is stuck in a busy loop or something. My only graceful exit out of the problem is to reboot the phone. Often I couldn't act in time and have had missed alarms and such.
I also know that it's a recent development; something that I've noticed happening only for couple of months. I'm thinking of resetting the phone to factory settings and starting over again. Before I do that I thought I'd ask around if this sounds something familiar or tastes like any known issues. Is there any diagnostics or logs that I can provide? Or are they any apps that I can install that can tell what's eating the battery so fast (currently it's telling me Android OS!)?
My phone is Karbonn A9+ (bought from India) and runs Android 4.0.4.

locking up and rebooting now with ICS.....

Twice now in the last 40 minutes since updating to ICS my screen has locked up in a browser and in a game and then restarted itself..... anyone else?
UPDATE:
- Short and sweet so you don't have to read through 30 pages.
- If your Prime has this problem either
A.) Return to store for refund or exchange and pray you get a newer unit without the different hardware/firmware version
B.) Call ASUS RMA it and pray they can finally get something right.
C.) Sit on your hands while you wait to see if ASUS can somehow figure out a magical firmware patch that will play nice with both older and newer Primes..... all the while getting frustrated with a prime that can be used as a paper weight.
I recommend A I found a new prime from HHGregg and it works just fine and I am finally happy again but still pissed at ASUS for this huge quality control blunder.
update 1/31
here is exactly the reason you do not want to rma to Asus.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474354
Everything has been running great for me. Maybe try rebooting Prime for a fresh start up. might fix it. mine hasn't locked up or anything.
Mine is locking up non stop. I can't even boot to the home screen most of the time. And when it does it'll lock up after a bit and go into more boot loops

I can say that my TP is also restarting over and over again. I can't get anything done. Just got it in the mail today. Haven't touched it besides firmware updates.

Mine has been stable. The only FC I got was on engadget on their live feed from the nvidia presentation. Reopened the browser and everything was fine (including the engadget page).
I have been in both gmail and exchange, world of goo, tapatalk, newsrob, reddita, etc... with no problems.

Constant locking and rebooting here. Never rooted.
I've done the factory wipe twice. Still doing it.
This time I wiped and didnt sync with my Google account in case its some data thats being restored thats causing it.
Ive had no problems until the update
I updated to ICS last night and it rebooted at least 6 times in 1 hour. Couldn't take it anymore. I've only had the tablet for a week with no issues before update..Hope Asus didn't release a bad update...that would suck.
Thinking about doing a full data wipe and factory reset. Has anyone already tried this?
Just did it again with no apps loaded or anything. Every 20 minutes or so
I loved this tablet until now. I'm so frustrated
Mine's working OK, a few FCs but no reboots or lockups.
I had made a separate post this AM on this topic; but i have the same issue.
not rooted
never had a reboot or issue till last nights update
it boots and loads, i get in for about 1-5 mins and then it locks up and freezes for 10 seconds and does a quick book loop, then repeat.. over and over.
i have so many apps and settings i am dreading a factory reset, since it hasn't worked for anyone else i will hold off..
any other ideas?

was thinking maybe we should get our heads together and see if we have a common app or setting that is causing it.
but people have said they did a factory reset and it didn't fix it with no apps, so i am lost.

One clue I may have is that it only happens after the screen is unlocked.. if you leave the screen locked all day it won't reboot.
Once you unlock the screen its like a ticking time bomb. i've tried stopping all running services as well the second i unlock.
same here
same issue here
never rooted
never had issues
once upgraded constant reboots
also noticed google + force close every time.
i guess its not just 1 or 2 people....
hope asus will push another update soon

I can't seem to find a common thread among all of my experiments. I've wiped three times now (third time I got the message about upgrading and updating apps again, but it's still doing it), I've tried wiping and not using any Google accounts, I've tried using my Google account but not restoring, I've tried wiping data in all of my apps, I've tried killing all running services. I've removed my microSD card and it still happens. It also happened to me in all of the power modes. Actually, I haven't tried "power saver."
Seems to happen every 15-20 minutes, but I've also had it happen immediately after a reboot.
I wonder if it's due to the rumored overclock. I hope it's not a hardware issue.
Prior to the update I had zero issues with anything, including GPS or wifi.

yup i am in the same boat as you and have tried basically everything you have minus the reset. since it doesn't seem to be a solution I am going to hold off.
same thing happening with mine, tried the data wipes and resets. I'm at a loss

my latest attempt is turn on auto brightness and leave it in powersave mode.. its been up 5 mins.. which is a record today.
Probably due to the update not wiping system. Hopefully when ASUS upload the zip to the support site, you'll be able to sort it out. Could be a few days till that happens though.

I'm also trying it in powersave mode and it seems to be running better now. I'm about ten minutes in, currently streaming something in Netflix with no problems.
***And as I was typing that the thing rebooted again. Not tied to the power mode***

[Q] Random shutdown and sudden boot problem

Hi,
I have two problems. One is that the phone randomly shuts down. At first the network loses connection, screen starts to flicker and the phone shuts down. The battery had also swollen. And when the phone was working and I did a reboot, the battery level went to 1%. Then I bought a new battery and it didn't fix the problem. Is this a battery problem or phone problem?
The second problem is that the random shutdown occured again, so I put the phone to charge for the night and now in the morning it's not going past the Samsung Galaxy S II i9100 screen. I can go to the Recovery Mode and Download Mode. Should I flash Stock ROM or do I have to do something else before flashing? Which Odin should I use, the v1.83 or v3.04?
Thank You.

Hmm ...
1. If you switched the battery and problem is still the same, it doesn't seem to be a battery issue. Maybe somethings wrong/damaged with your phone.
2. I recommend to flash a stock ROM to check if the issues are still there. You can use Odin v1.83, v1.85 or v3.04. I am using Odin v1.85 as I have downloaded it first and it works fine. It's your choice. Probably the newer version (v3.04) is better.
Good luck !

With reference to the first problem, this is definitely a battery problem, if you continue to use a swollen battery it could leak or explode

I could use a stock recovery image because I'm selling my player to someone for their kids so it really shouldn't have a reboot menu.

I've seen the battery display problem on multiple problems. Most recent on my Charge.
Only thing I can think of is to let your device run down until it shuts off. Then let it sit for a day or two. Then charge it for a couple of hours and try to get into recovery or download whatever. It's been a long time but at one point my player was booting to a blank screen but the dev told me just to flash a kernel because it was in download mode.
Wish I had more to offer but it's been a long time since I've flashed anything on the player.

Immediate Shutoff

I'm not too sure what is happening here, but my phone has been acting all month. Sometimes it randomly shuts off on it own, afterwards i would just restart the phone, and it would work fine. Today it did the same thing, but now my phone won't reboot. it'll power up for about 2 seconds, and immediately shut off. For the most of the part Im thinking it might be a software issue, not my battery. Im running a Phoenix Rom from another galaxy s4 carrier with a patch to work with Verizon models. At this point I can't doing anything with my phone (enter recovery or download mode). Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Chris -
The only time my S4 did that was when the battery was totally depleted. I suggest plugging it in and charging for a couple of hours and then reboot. If that still doesn't work - it might be time to replace it. good luck!
I have read several posts where people were having similar issues and it ended up being a bad power switch.
You might check that out.

Current rom :-Cm12
Recovery :-cwn
Looking for a good friend with good mind to help ..
This won't probably help you a lot
I'm not really sure that you can do something about it . Think about it that problem doesn't exist because of your rom or something like that those problems shown up after your phone fell of your desk so probably something broke inside your pone and that's what causes your problems (This is my theory it might not be right).
