Learn from my experience:
My NT was plugged in and charging. It somehow fell 28 inches from the desk top to the wood floor below. The screen is intact and the tablet functions properly, but there was more damage than I would have expected.
There is a crack next to the USB connection. The notch on the bottom left is bent upward and the cover for the micro SD card doesn't want to close completely.
I would have expected it to be more durable than this.
Wow that is crazy. On the plus side, the screen wasn't harmed. I already have a case for mine. but will have to be careful.
I have had no issue with mine sliding off my bed constantly but then again I have a case on mine that extends around the edges a good half inch which means the case is taking the brunt of the force instead of the nook.

I'm sorry to hear that that happened to your device. Sometimes I drop my electronic devices and I get butt hurt for a good 10-20 minutes... then come to realize, if it still works, its okay.
By the way, do you work? For less than $20 you can pick up a rubberish silicone case that fits your Nook like a sleeve along w/ a zipper case, shipped. Not bad if you ask me. Some user posted a txt/video review in the accessories forum. If you're not super picky and don't care about how pretty it'll be (not ugly at all) and are just worried if it'll work in a good manner, go ahead and pick it up. If you can't afford it, find your nearest aunt'/uncle or call up grandma...
If you go to amazon (cant post links yet...) search for something like "Barnes & Noble NOOK COLOR eBook Reader Tablet WiFi, Black Soft Silicone Skin Case Cover And Smart Headphone Wrap/Key Chain Style" and "Gizmo Dorks Neoprene Zipper Slip Case (Black) with Carabiner Key Chain for the Barnes and Nobles Nook Color and Nook Tablet"
Trust me, it'll do it's job. You'll feel better w/ it, even if it is not a $30-$40 accessory. You won't even need the latter (zipper case) but it's just an extra level of protection.

I like the Trident cases. They add some bulk but it seems like it will protect well. My Nook Tablet has fallen from the coffee table to the carpet with no damage... but I would expect that even without the case.
I have mine in a Otter Box. It has survived several minor falls. With a 3 yr/o, the Otter Box is a must!
There is an Otter Box available for the NT already? Oh yeah, I suppose it's been out a while for the Nook Color, and they are pretty much the same size I believe. Well, that's good news, I always liked the Otter Box cases (the heavy duty, rugged ones, I think they are called the Defender series). I don't care for their lighter "Commuter" series. Which type is available for the NT? I suppose I could go Google it...
OTOH, I haven't bought a case for mine yet because I like the way it feels in my hand. I just figure I need to be careful with it. I'm not sure I would like it with a case on it...
I dropped mine at home once the day after I got it. I dislike carpet but for once was glad the floor is carpeted. I went to Radio Shack and bought a cover for mine for $30 and I have dropped it once in the cover and no damage was done even on cement. It's a good investment. This cover has 4 elastic straps to hold the tablet (like a book cover) even when in use.
I can't really imagine not using a cover. I've dropped mine several times, from 4 feet down to 1 foot.
If you are worried about dropping or scratching , get a cover .

I prefer naked devices - covers make the device FAT ... but then I'm double careful with my electronics ....
Good thing I got a case, I seem to be capable of dropping things.
My official B&N case makes the nook easier to hold at least for me so I am glad I got it plus I use it as a stand when watching videos
I'm a big fan of the RooCASE line. I've got the Executive Leather Portfolio variant, but they also make a more compact Leather Case flip cover that has the key feature: A removable "bikini' holster for the device. For throwing in a bag or heavy travel, I use the full case. When I want to use my device at work or around the house, I can pull out the Velcro-attached bikini and have protection while not adding a lot of bulk. There's a rigid back-board that extends just beyond the edges of the device to provide some protection in a fall, and all-around protection that still allows access to everything but the SD slot. What really sells me on the bikini is that I can flip my device 180 degrees vertically and slide it in to protect the screen. The rubberized back on my NOOK is exposed, but the screen faces the semi-rigid back of the holster. The little NOOK carabiner loop is really handy for pulling the device back out.
Purchased the SiKai MicroFiber case for the Lenovo IdeaPad K1 Tablet. Delivery was within the UK and didn't take too long, about 5 days including the weekend.

The case is made from a strange type of plastic material, it's quite soft and flexible. Am kind of glad rather than faux leather. It is very thin and light, but seems sturdy enough to protect the tablet around the house. I have a 10" netbook bag that I keep it in when travelling to add extra protection.
I like it since it makes it easy to carry around with you and doesn't add bulk to it. I would say the case is lighter than my official HP Touchpad case and similar in strength, although a different material. I can only compare it to the ROOCASE Multi-Angle Leather Case and can say it is much thinner and lighter than that.
There is only one angle that the case allows for, but since it is an Android tablet you can flip the whole thing round and get a lower angle. Its fine for watching at night when streaming video so its not an issue for me.
Price wise the only options available to me at the time were the faux leather ones for about £9.99 or the official case from the Lenovo website coming in at a hefty £34.99 once you add the crazy £10 delivery charge! Not many options in the UK unfortunately but am glad I did some research and found this case.
Other things that you might notice in the photos (sorry poor camera phone ones) there is a place to put a pen, all cut outs seem correct and I love the fact that I can charge it without having the case open, also the hdmi port is free.
Not sure how long it will last but considering the few days usage of it, the minor things like the tablet can slide a tiny bit inside the case so would have preferred a tighter fit (although will try and adjust the velcro again that closes once you slip the tablet inside), the cut out by the front facing button could be a bit lower, and the magnetic clasps to be quite weak I will give this case an 8/10 and can recommend it.

great case! I bought this sikai case too and actually prefer it more than the original lenovo K1 case.
This covers all ports, and also has a great microfiber texture that is slightly grippy, while remaining smooth to the touch. does not attract dust at all and keeps the K1 snug (if it feels loose, readjust the velcro tighter).

Yeh have tightened it a bit more, doesn't move as much.... Glad I chose this over the cheaper cases and the official one which was more than double the cost here in the UK.

This case is pretty good if you want something thin and light, there are stronger/more protective cases out there but they add bulk and I don't want that since I use this round the house...... Still glad I bought this case and find it better in that respect to the Roocase.....

Got the SiKai for my TPT. Everyting else looks bulky in comparison. It is extremely thin (I''ve tried a lot of gadget cases over the years), and although it's screamingly vinyl, it doesn't look really cheap since it fits so well. Leather like this might come off as over-the-top (not that I wouldn't probably sucker into that if I could find it). It's got the seam around the edge where it cushions a drop, and the magnetic closure on the flap is a great touch, not too powerful, but it stays closed well enough.
My gripes are with the screen cover flap: it leaves two stripes on my matte screen protector where the fold places rub off the grease I thought I cleaned off last night, it doesn't hold the tablet vertical enough to really use, and it's busy looking on the front. If I had a choice in the design, I would leave off the "stand" capabilities and leave it flat. If it's open, it's really floppy; it would be easier to manage if it were entirely rigid. I might add a hide-able tether & a knob/button so you could stand it up on its other edge more vertically instead.
All in all, for the price I paid (US$26-ish), I'm very happy with it. If Piel Frama comes up with something, though, I might check that out, if only to drool. I still love my old Wizard case, and my Advantage case from them, too. Very lovely, solid product, and they've been keeping customers happy for a long time.
Addendum: After a couple of months with it, mine is holding together just fine. I had to trim a bit of vinyl fringe, butvall vinyl does that ( it frays a bit after it's freshly cut, but after you trim it once, unless it's cut really crooked, you're done). I have noticed that after a bit of stretching from the daily+ in & out I do to use the dock, it's loose enough to partially obscure the rear camera, not to mention trying to take pics with the flap cover is a huge PITA. If I used this camera a lot, I'd be totally fed up with this case. I may also be melting a bigger hole for the speaker (whch is hard-core disappointing to begin with). All in all, though, that's it for my complaints, which is pretty rare for me.I plan on cloud storage sync and a great cam on my next phone to use the tab for pviewing,
To be fair the official HP Touchpad case does the same thing to my Touchpad so it's one of those things.
I use the same case for my Thinkpad Tablet, and it's the best I've encountered so far, albeit with some flaws of it's own: Some of the stitching on the inside of the cover is already beginning to fall apart after ~1 Month of usage :-/
Stitching has been fine on mine, maybe tell the reseller to exchange it?

I took my device out of my Caseen case in order to do my downgrade/root...yes I know I didn't need to take it out, but I did.
I forgot how light and nice it is to have such a thin device. It got me thinking that I might not want to use a case that often. What do you think?
I'm a kind of a no case guy, but since it is my favorite expensive toy I'm going to try to keep it in the case as much as possible. The good thing about cases like the one you have, is that it is wonderful to use when you are on a flat surface, no need to hold the tablet or break your neck looking straight down.
I think the answer is both. For home use, I prefer not to have it in a case, enjoy the tablet for what it is. If you plan on taking it on a trip or to work, then put it in a case for that extra protection.
I plan on getting one of the ones posted in another thread where it holds both tablet and dock but other than that, no. I would but it would be annoying having it on and off to use the dock

I just got the 300 and I'm loving it. I agree that the best case is the dock but it worries me that some people have posted about the screen getting cracked when docked. I wonder if this happens when you put the tab with the keyboard in a bag and pressure is applied to the screen. If you read the tf201 forums some users have attached rubber or silicone bumpers to the dock to spread the pressure along more points. As for me I'm going to add the silicone bumpers and leave it docked. My ideal case would be a snap on hard plastic case for the back of the tab and leave it docked so that the back is protected by the case and the screen by the dock. I have yet to see a snap on case for the 300
I'm thinking of buying the Roocase or the Poetic case and cutting off the case in half so I can then use the part that covers the back only and leave the tab docked. Not sure how it will look but its the only way I can think of getting what I want.
I don't like cases. I got a good bag to carry it around in. When it's in my hands I want it as light as possible. Ruins the comfort and functionality of having a tablet if you increase the weight with a case, IMO.

The main reason I get the case is to use it as a kickstand for watching movies or if i using at a table or desk. but i got one thats fairly easy to take out, so if I'm carrying it around the house, I take it out.
I ended up just encasing mine with Armorsuit gear and carrying it around like that. I much prefer it without the case. I would like a stand though. Any suggestions for a stand?

Yeah, there were some screen cracking issues with the Prime but that was a fault of a bad weight and pressure distribution when docked. If you compare the two docks side-by-side, you can tell that ASUS redesigned the TF300's so as not to have that problem. and as for a case I love sleeves. exactly like those laptop sleeves that lots of people get, but in 10" size. thats what I recommend.

Case = Piece of mind for me since I am so clumsy. I also agree that it is good to use as a stand for movies and surfing.
I went back and fourth myself over this issue. What I ended up doing with my 7” HTC Evo View 4G tablet was to get a case that's just the plastic part of the 360° style case, without the big hole in the middle to rotate of course. It's lightweight yet protects the corners and back. I'm hoping that type of case will be available by the time my red TF gets here.

With case! It's a €400,- device and would hate to get it broke or lots of scratches on it. But depends which kind of case because you got really thick ones which I think dont hold as good. The thin ones I think are better.
A advantage of a case (not all of them) is that you can use it as a stand for the tablet.
If you want to use it without a case but want to store it safely, why not use a 10" sleeve.
I just use a sleeve. Its easiest, and unless I get an otterbox like case this thing is gonna break if I drop it anyways. I just use sleeves and padding for when its in my bag
I love how sleek my TF300 is and I tried a couple of different cases but did not like the bulk they added. I agree that the keyboard dock is the best solution for docking and I bought one of those sleeves from Amazon and use it when i have to carry it around.

I actually went a few days without a case when i first got my Pad....i usually dont use a case for any devices as i am usually VERY careful with them. however, the Pad almost seemed to thin and light without a case and i was always very scared of dropping it. day 1, walking from my work to my car, i had a death grip on the thing...lol
needless to say, i got a case (moko slim multi-angle one off amazon for $15...well worth the $$ IMO) and it has been great. Gives that extra protection when i want it, a great multi-angle stand for watching videos or normal use (placed it on my lap and browsed with it last night) and it is actually fairly thin and light still. even without it on the "stand" it is easier to hold due to the grooves on the back.
it's so nice i may never take it out of the case again....especially since i have Tile floors throughout my entire house....lol

The Nillkin Fresh case came about 2-3 days ago and I was quite excited. But that was short lived. The case is a faux-leather flip cover case with a thin plastic shell on that clips to the phone. It looks decent enough, but I have some problems with mine (possibly QC problems):
The case though didn't completely fit!! Along the right side (near the SD/SIM) it is a bit warped - not bad or noticeable unless your looking right at it and for it.
The case is held closed by a magnet, but the magnet on the flip cover is quite small which then requires it to be precisely over the other pole or it does nothing. Not a big deal, but I wish this was thought out better.
Additionally, one of the main features of the case is (link below) how the case being used as a stand. The flip cover is a tri-fold design which should act as a stand but I haven't had much luck with it. The inside of the seemingly leather flip cover is a soft touch, almost suede, material that is quite slippery. This plus the fact that the case seems to be needing to be broken in makes for the "stand" feature unusable... it falls right over currently. (I have tried multiple configurations).
Over all, I bought the case on eBay for $9.99 with no shipping cost (ships from china - companies home country) and it took about 15 days to get here (in the US). Not bad, but I am already looking for a replacement that will make my device feel premium again rather then cheap.
Would I recommend this case? Yes, but only as a temporary case until more come out - like the official Sony cases or a case from Incipio (link below).
** Complete side note: I had a Nillkin case for my old Nexus 4 which only lasted a few short months because the leather started to peel away from the flip cover! I knew this would be a temporary case when I bought it, so keep that in mind!

I was fortunate to get to try that case out and many others (being in hk and china) - and I posted about this case. It's unfortunate you didn't read my post and what case eventually went with in the big Z ultra case thread.
This case is definitely not recommended if you want one to work well with desk stand, and want to use the trifold ipad style cover as a stand.
The snap-in style plastic mounts doesn't make it easy to pop in and out of to use the desk stand, and the plastic mounts are shiny thus looks and feels cheap.
Finally, the cover doesn't even come close to the quality and feel of the ipad cover, even the vinyl kind. The material is stiff and plasticky and most importantly doesn't fold together to function as a working stand at all. It will unfold/collapse and fall over.
In addition, there's an issue with the the magnet. With the magnet closed, there is a gap between the last third of the tri-fold cover and the phone's screen. This gap exists because the case (mold or design) is not the right fit - the wider flap makes it essentially unable to align with the opposing magnet. If you try to push the flap down to get rid of the gap, you inadvertently push/slide the magnet off and the cover comes loose. In practice, the magnet will never be engaged because you'll always push the cover down somehow (pocket, bag, stacking something on top).
The only Nillkin I recommend is the http://www.nillkin.com/english/proshow.asp?mid=2&sid=0&tid=0&cid=1&scid=13&id=3516&page=1 shield case. I ended up buying the black one for scenarios where I don't want a flip cover. The fit is good, texture is good (good grippy backside), and it doesn't look too cheap (no shiny plastic). It's decent protection for rougher than usual situations. There are sections where there's a thin piece of plastic on the edge of the phone (like over the usb flap) where it feels weak, cheap and easily breakable. Besides that only issue, I like this case as a back-up.
For a flip cover case that works well with a desk stand, actually stands up, and feels decent quality - I recommend Kaso and Krussell. I went with Kaso as a cheaper alternative for now.
So I guess it's not just me... which is kind of a bummer, but I have already found a replacement. Now if only October 22 was here (my Birthday) I could get a new case!

Funny how the 2 Nillkin cases the OP talks about are the exact 2 I bought online.
I bought the white Fresh, and Yellow leather.
Anyway, after having used both, now I know that flip covers, despite the protection it gives, tend to get in the way of general use. Answering calls involve one extra hassle step.
Taking pictures, you have to roll the flip cover up into the triangle as if you are going to use it as a stand and hold it in your left hand, because simply flipping it and folding it over will obstruct the camera.
Nothing wrong with the build quality...I am sure it is better than most cheapos out there. All the useful ports are left uncovered (one of the reasons why I chose Nillkin...there is actual thought process that has gone into the design). If you want to use the magnetic charging port, not many other manufacturers apart from Nillkin make them uncovered.
The yellow I chose is less vibrant in colour (than what it seemed on screen), and does not go so well with the white ZU I have, so that got retired until the day I get SBH-52 and leave my phone in the bag.
For the Nillkin Fresh, I got in white, and am very happy with it, and currently in use.
It has a nice tight fit, seems to be made of good tough plastic, and the texture on the back helps with general grip.
I did make one modification to it, because even though the magnetic charging port is left open by design, it was impossible to get a good connection while the pone was still in the case. So I cut off the thin strip that runs along the screen side of the mag port. Filed it down with nail clipper file, and now it is perfect. It has not lost structural rigidity.
The number of times that i thought that I had closed the USB port properly, but was still slightly open (thus not making it fully waterproof) has prompted me to get the magnetic charging cable. I knew it was something I wanted while I was out choosing the case, so for those who are still looking for cases, I won't say go Nillkin, but make sure you go for one that has the magnetic charging port uncovered.
Whether you buy DK-30 is a different debate. Some like it, but some find it expensive for what it is. There are not many covers out there tat allow you to dock with it on.
But the USB magnetic charging cable is something I believe every ZU owner should have. For that reason get a cover with the port uncovered.

I came back to post a quick update about the case I got and this caught my eye... actually the build quality is the reason as well!!
The case is broken ><. On the top left hand side (near the charging port) the case has snapped. A piece is broken clean off and only after about 2 weeks. I know the case was $10, but I also had build quality issues with a Nexus 4 case, so I am going to say the quality is rather low.
With this new information, I am going to say stay away from this case. The long import time (from HK to US), and poor quality aren't worth it. Spend the few extra bucks and get a quality case you will have for more than a few weeks.
Just my 2 cents though...

I was concerned about overheating (tablet snaps into plastic mould) but gave it a shot. Thankfully I've had no issues at all.
Stand is effective, even when on uneven surfaces (on my legs for eg).
Only complaint is the cut-out for the stylus leaves a thin-ish piece of material near the (when you're looking at tablet, in portrait, from front) bottom left corner. This is starting to fold due to the way I hold my device. Purely aesthetic.
Well worth it.
Is a long time that I'm undecided between this cover and the poetic case...
Before the shield had a cover very similar to my iPad, it was very comfortable but it was silicone and not plastic.
I am concerned that the corners where plastic snaps could scratch the corners of the tablet.
Of this I really like the variety of positions, of the Poetic Case the security and do not know which one to choose.
I already bought the poetic but I think on the couch, and especially in the bed is not the best.
You could take some pictures of the cover co all sides?
Do you think can scratch the Tablet?

I take it out occasionally to switch the SIM. Maximum five times since mid-November. There's no damage and no scratches.
I guess it depends on how often you plan on removing the tablet from the case.. The more you do, the higher the risk of damage I suppose.
Its 00:30 for me right now, so no pics I'm afraid. I guarantee you there is no damage though.

The plastic part of your should be the same as mine, but from the Amazon's photos I do not understand if the bottom edge (the opposed of the volume paddles) is complete or are present only the corners as like mine.
What worries me of the mine, is that the angle at the top right, makes a slight movement even when the cover is on the Tablet.
I would not want that over time took away the paint

The plastic part of your should be the same as mine, but from the Amazon's photos I do not understand if the bottom edge (the opposed of the volume paddles) is complete or are present only the corners as like mine.
What worries me of the mine, is that the angle at the top right, makes a slight movement even when the cover is on the Tablet.
I would not want that over time took away the paint

Yeah, the bottom edge is complete. It also has a small extra edge to secure tablet when standing at an angle. Didnt exen notice that until looking just now.
Just took tablet out of case again, still no marks/scratches/damage =)

I'd been holding out for an official one since I liked the official one so much on my tegra note. The issue was the price. The official one was always way more expensive than third party ones. I find the one I"m using (similar to graffio) just does not do a good job of standing on its own but seems to be an excellent case to hold and protect the device.
