[Q] Can you share your experience with me? - Motorola Droid RAZR

I never installed a custom ROM, so before I start my own adventure I'd like to ask if you guys would like to share your experience with me.
My goal would be to find a clean and bloatware free alternative. I love how nice and smooth some of my Nexus devices work and would be cool to see such a thing running on the Razr Maxx too, with all that battery power. I'm happy with the design and look of the stock ROM so I am not looking for any fancy changes, just something like Stock ROM without any unncessary packages.
I hope such a thing exists and that it might somehow boost the battery usage efficiency, otherwise I guess I'll just keep on going with root and freeze anything I don't like.
Some info on my device:
System version - 982.124.14.XT910.Retail.en.EU
Model number - XT910
Android version - 4.1.2
Baseband version - U_04.10.00R
Webtop version - wt-3.0.0
Thank you for you time.

Cyanogenmod is an obvious starting point.

Can you please point me towards a stable version of Cyanogenmod for the Razr Maxx?

Google droid RAZR cyanogenmod.

If you do like stock ROM, then I'd say flash a stock based custom ROM instead.
It gives you the advantage to use HDMI or webtop if you ever need.
Not that I'm saying anything against CM11.

Slimkat is one of the most bloatware free, hence its name, slim ROM, i use it as Dalí driver and dont have issues plus i great battery life, if this is your first time, i suggest you watch some vídeos about how to flash Roms on safestrap 3.65. Then get started, i encourage you to do it with patience caution and always read Before you do anything

Thanks, slimkat will be my first attempt then.
For a start I'll start following what this guy here says: link

So far I tried:
Cyanogenmod
cm-10.1.2-umts_spyder - problems with aosp keyboard
cm-10.1.3-umts_spyder - problems with aosp keyboard
cm-11-20140319-NIGHTLY-umts_spyder - didn't quite like it
Slim Jelly Bean
Slim-umts_spyder-4.3.build.2.2-UNOFFICIAL-20131119-1959 - it only has nova launcher as default display manager
So in a moment I'll try out MoKee
Anyway, thanks for the initial input everyone. At least now I started discovering various roms.

Any custom rom has problems, only stock is almost perfect on stability but there is a lot of options and customizations not available. Some errors take more time to appear. Everyone has different interests and hardware so you might never suffer some bugs.
If aosp keyboard is not working for you, there is options like swype (included in stock but for cm you have to buy it. Thought it has upgrades that can be worthy like dragon speaking) or swiftkey.
Stock rom without carrier bloat... only Brazil retail.
Looking for stock Heavily debloated... Search for de-blur ones. My advice here would be to try to deblur by your own by reading a de-blur list and removing one by one. Some roms out there can be deblurred more than you would like.
Interesting stock ROM? China ROM (i believe current version is 400-430) has a unique feature... Call recording without having to mess with configurations, system files etc.... and very nice stability and battery compared to other stock options. Read its thread thoroughly since installing it is not so easy due to region restrictions (read about CID) and something called CDT.bin that can get you unable to revert to other ROMs or even use your phone again depending on circumstances (CDT.bin problem is not exclusive to China ROM).
Currently using slimkat, had cyanfox before. I Spend at least a day with current rom before installing jbx since flashing another kernel can bring new bugs that are not caused by current rom. (Thought normally jbx gives a big improvement on speed and other things sometimes it has bugs).

That looks like a long list. Isn't it a bad idea to freeze so many processes like HTML viewer, Key Chain, Setup Wizard?
I mean okay it's good to not have useless processes, but isn't that a bit too much?

It is a bad idea to freeze any system apps that aren't on the deblur list if you don't kow what you are doing. Everything he has there is safe to freeze, and some of their processes can be handled better by other apps anyways.
Regardless welders list is EXAMPLE ONLY! If you are looking to debloat your stock ROM, take angrist's advice and find/read the debloat(deblur) list for Razr, and freeze processes that you feel you don't need one at a time. Use the phone a little bit and see if it causes you issues, then move to the next.

I'm using CM11 Nightly 03-22 nothing else but pagapps and the only thing I've been missing is audio being routed through the usb when in docked mode. Absolutely love it.

And remember, if you will remove something like launcher, better have installed it's replacement first.

Differences between AOSP and Samsung-based ROM? / Tips for AOSP ROM?

Hi there,
I'm currently considering switching from a Samsung-based ROM to an AOSP-based ROM. Before doing so though, I'd like to check which Samsung / pre-installed apps will not work on an AOSP-based ROM (even if I transfer them using Titanium Backup), so I'd be grateful if someone could tell me. Also, which features would I lose doing so?
Then: If I decide to switch, can someone give me some tips as to which ROM to use? I'd prefer something lightweight, smooth, clean and stable based on Jelly Bean AOSP with some useful mods already installed. On my Desire I used Redux and Oxygen but I have no idea which SGS3 ROMs are like that.
TIA

Regarding your first question the apps which are installed by Sammy require tw framework to work.. So may not work on aosp... You can try though but you will get fcs.. Regarding third party apps such as drop box, flipboard they will work.. But you can anyways get them in play store..
You will loose Sammy specific features such as smart stay, swipe to call, and other motion gestures..
I can't comment on the second part as there are no best ROMs, you will have to try them yourselves or read and compare the OP

Thanks for the reply. As for ROM tips, I'm not asking for the best, I'm just asking for tips for lightweight, fast, stable and clean ROMs - preferably ones updated regularly - so I can have a look and choose myself.

Need some advice

First off by posting this i mean no disrespect towards the developers of CM9.
Ok heres my problem im running a ics rom it is treating me very nicely about as expected but it is starting to be a nusiance for my everyday use. As you all know the ics doesnt just yet have a camera and CM10 does. It would be very nice to have a camera but i can get by without. another option i have is to flash back to a stock rom but since Gingerbread does not apply proxy setting to apps it would definatly be a problem but it does work nice without a problem.
The newest release of CM10 looks nice should i flash it?
Should i stick in their with my ICS CM9 and cope with its problems (no disrepect inteaded toward the developers)?
Are the stock roms that are on XDA modified to apply proxy setting to apps?
I forgot to mention the issues iv been haveing with my rom so here:
Any time i try to look at the capacity of my device in the setting as soon as it is finished calculated it restarts.
When i try to download apps i get a 923 error (insufficient storage space) even tough that isnt the problem.
After apps have been install (only games apps) after the first 2 weeks of using it starts to freeze at start up and after 2 months of freezing at start up it works fine again.
There are a few really small ones that are not worth mentioning.
me myself and i said:

Unless you REALLY need Bluetooth and the earpiece speaker, I'd definitely recommend upgrading to CM10. It works a lot better for me than CM9 did.

In my opinion, sounds like you should stick to stock. There are problems with custom kernels, and custom roms which nothing fully works one hundred percent. Honestly, if it annoys you, switch back.
Yeah but with the stock rom the proxy setting don't apply to apps and since my main network that I connect to is tru a proxy server any app that needs wireless connection will not work I'd rather put up with what annoys me then not being able to connect even to the play store

[Q] what's wrong?

1. unable to change fonts installed manually apart from system ones.
2. ram usage is very higher i.e.,
before memory is cleared after memory is cleared
1. 750MB 730MB
2. 680MB 665MB
like that ! heavy ram used
3. phone heating up very often
1. try replace /system/fonts
2. it is normal, even you killed all apps , RAM will get back full in little time so don't bother , it is the NATURAL of the Android system , can't be helped
3. check out if some background applications using lots CPU resources or were you playing game or something heavy ? or it was standing by and heat up as well ?
case 1 , if you were doing something , then it is normal
case 2, consider background applications also try a clean ROM see if it helps
Pre-cleaned rom or any rom cleaned with rom cleaner is a really good start, you'll obviously see the difference.
Are you using AOSP or Sammy based rom?? I guess Sammy as you've mentioned the FlipFont thing. Anyway, Samsung roms have been known for having problems managing ram memory. Just try another rom, like Foxhound. It has a (quite good) ram management and it's quite fast. Also, as is sammy based you will not face problems AOSP based roms have (bluetooth not working properly, exynos' gpu not performing as it should, excessive battery drain and so on)

In general cleaned & optimized sammy rom is the best choice for compatibility and performance.

ram usage is lighter on CM 10.1 and even on sammy 4.1.2 ..but only sammy 4.2.1 leaked rom is having this problem I guess !!
can you be a bit more specific about replacing system/fonts? ? Please...
I've tried sammy leaked 4.2.1 (I guess, the latest one) and I've had some slowdowns and ram problems. I really recommend you using a xxemb5 android 4.1.2 based rom or later (I've tried so far Foxhound -as I mentioned before- crDroid, XperianZe and UltimaRom; and all of them performed quite better than 4.2.1).
In conclussion, don't use leaked beta roms if you expect nice performance and a bug-free rom. Official versions are the only ones that provide it.

The problem with CM10.1 is that the GPU performs soooo bad on it due to Samsung's reluctance of releasing exynos' source, so basically you get an underperfoming S3. And if you have an S3, I don't think you want it to perform badly, do you??

well , i never use any application to change font , so in my case , you MUST have to be ROOTED first otherwise none of my words help you.
use something like Root Explorer , go to /system/fonts , all the fonts are contained in there , so only thing you have to do is replace these files.
i am not sure , but i would like to remind you about permissions
also you can use flashable ZIP file via recovery directly overwirte these files which is much easier and simpler, at least that's how i do it.
You could also use FlipFonts (an apk with the font; there are tons in google play) and change them in (Settings>display>font type) or, if rooted (and I suppose you're) use font changer. Get it from google play and it'll show you a lot of fonts for free. Just select one and click install and it'll do the rest.

[Q] What Android APP Does This?

Hi,
Good day
I'm looking for an android app which is basically a NOTIFIER that is always on top of any running applications
(like Floating Notification, GO Toucher etc) but what I am specifically looking for is a function that:
For example - I am playing games, when someone SMS/FB Chat/Email/IMO etc... me, it pops up on my current screen then what I want is I can directly reply WITHOUT closing or alt-tabbing the game. Hope it is clear enough.
I don't know what search tag should I use because typing "pop up notifier" seems too broad or it does not have what I am looking for.
Hope you can help me
Thanks!
I am using Galaxy S3 Omega ROM v45 if you must know.
Try installing a custom ROM such as Paranoid Android. It has halo which is exactly what you're looking for.

Hi heslo,
This is a very useful info.
Thanks mate but i think this will be my last resort because installing another ROM is a pain in a butt. hehe~
But you know, if its an APP pre-loaded in Paranoid ROM, I think I can extract that and install in mine?
Don't think it will work with stock type ROM. Installing another ROM is not hard to do Lol. Just remember to wipe data/system/cache/dalvik cache. Once you install a Paranoid Android or any other AOSP/AOKP ROM you will like it much more. Halo is a great app, plus all the other great features. Look it up on YouTube plenty of videos on it plus I'm sure a few tutorials on how to install custom ROMs for your device :good:

3rd party apps cant do this. That's why floating notifications doesn't do it. Requires lots of other framework and system ui changes. Only HALO does this

Stable roms?

Can everyone post a list of stable roms for I717? I don't like going through the trouble of backing up all my data and flashing a new rom only to have it crash multiple times per day and have something like bluetooth not work reliably at all. Maybe some people enjoy playing with that (a lot of the most popular roms at the top of the forum are like this), but I don't!
I'll start the list and say that Beanstalk 4.4 is extremely stable, only had it reset on me twice in one year, and bluetooth works 100%. Only issue is that you can't move apps to SD so you run out of space quick (thanks to kitkat). I'd love to find something above kitkat this stable...
And I'll add some that I have tried and failed:
Candy5: No matter what Gapps I tried (yes pico etc), none of them installed and even after going through every suggestion in the thread I could not get a simple google play installed. Stock browser crashes every 2 minutes.
Pac-rom: Promising but crashes 10+ times per day. Often does not power on unless you boot into recovery and select reboot. GPS is terrible, google maps often loses it's place and gives turn-by-turn directions 60 seconds too late. Stock browser crashes all the time as well.
CM: Bluetooth reliability is terrible. Quincyatt not updated since 2014.
Sounds like you should stick with beanstalk or return the device to stock. When you rooted your device, it opened up security issues so it'll never be as solid as you'd like. What hasn't been updated since 2014?

I don't like going back to stock because IMO it's less secure (heartbleed is a pretty big security hole). If you leave root access disabled and don't download shady apps a custom rom isn't any more insecure.

Yes, I tried every suggestion in the thread and it still didn't work. After trying pac-rom for a couple days (and having it crash 20+ times) I just tried wiping it and flashing candy again, and now Gapps with google play worked the first time with no troubleshooting. Shrug.
Seems rock-solid so far though. Can't post in that thread since I have too few posts, so one question, if I do the OTA download for the new 4.0, can I just flash it on top of my 3.9 version or do I need to wipe everything and start over? Also, under Settings, Apps, if I click an app and move to SD card, it will sit there and say "moving" forever. If I exit settings and come back sometimes the app will actually show moved to SD list though.
And the stock calendar app doesn't seem to let me log in, it says "Sign in to get the most out of your device". Then I enter the email I've always used and it says "This account already exists on your device." But there's no other way to actually select that account. What am I doing wrong?

Don't do the OTA yet since BB won't let me upload my roms. The ota notification is a fluke. You'll have to flash the rom fresh between trying to find the right gapps which will work on your device. Candy is the most stable of all my builds currently.

Still can't post in the main thread but:
-If you turn on "Directly show pattern view", nothing shows on the lock screen besides the dots (time, weather, owner info, notifications).
-I had the dreaded bluetooth bug happen the other day, do you get many reports of this? (bluetooth stops working while streaming music, and does not turn back on until a phone reset).
-Stock calendar cannot be logged into (edit: just installed the google calendar from the app store which worked fine)
Unfortunately these are all deal breakers for me but I really like the rom otherwise, I don't want to switch back
Any way to enable HDMI output? (I have the adapter which worked before).

I heavily utilize the "Move to SD card" option because otherwise the default storage doesn't hold more than 10 or so apps, but I've had a problem with Candy5 twice now where my phone will crash, and upon reboot, all the apps that were moved to SD card are gone. Anyone else encounter this?
I wish I could post in the normal thread.
Installed the latest Candy5 20151031, did a complete wipe of everything per the instructions, and after installing 1 app (gmail), the phone reboot the first time gmail opened while placing the gmail widget down.
Here's a list of ROMs I've tested:
BlackSTAR XI - Best ROM for the i717. Super stable and fast.
CM Official - Good, but very buggy. SD card breaks, phone reboots often, HW overlays, etc.
Padawan - Not much new here, just a simple modded version of stock. Very stable but not too fast.
Candy5 - Very laggy, as LP is still in development for i717.
CM11 Unofficial - A bit laggy, HW overlays.
All in all I'm a huge fan of BlackSTAR XI, best ROM I've seen so far.
