[Q] I need to factory reset. I don't care about losing data. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Okay, so I don't know the technical term for what's happened to my phone, although, I can tell you that I cannot turn it on with the power button. The only way to get it on is plug it into my charger via micro usb. Recovery mode is unable to work. I can get into download mode though. And if I don't hit any buttons, it just said "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again".
I just want to be able to use my phone again, I'm totally alright with having to wipe every bit of data off of it and have it absolutely factory new. How can I do this? I could use Odin or Kies. However, Kies can't recognize my phone and just says "Device not responding. To resolve the issue, reboot the device." I'm tried dozens of times, it just can't find my device.
Please help.. I am phoneless and I could care less about losing data at this point.

Some people have had success with pressing the volume keys while in that "Firmware upgrade" error, causing the phone to continue to a normal boot. It's worth a try. Failing that, download the proper ROM image for your phone and flash it using ODIN.
If you don't know what build it has, I'd start with flashing a no-wipe MK2 image.

First, how'd you get to this point. Was this associated with rooting / flashing / something else? When you get into download mode, are you trying to Odin something in? It shouldn't say "Firmware upgrade encountered..." unless you're trying to push something. What happens when you get into recovery mode?
Second, do you know which factory image you started with? That's important, because if you started with an earlier image and flash an newer one, you can't go back. and the earlier the image, the easier the root.
This thread has no-wipe factory images. They're large files, so heads up.

You need Odin working. Good luck.

I'd start with a MDK, earlier doesn't hurt, and I believe that's the first factory image released officially
and here's a full wipe image for MDK (erroneously called MKD in the title)

I'd try the No-Wipe images first

Well initially, yesterday my phone crashed and I couldn't get it back on, unless I charged it and a grey battery icon would pop up and it'd vibrate every few seconds but nothing would happen. I couldn't get into recovery there either. So I got into download mode and I looked for things that could get me into recovery mode so I could factory reset. I flashed something on it using Odin and it worked.. To a point. On startup(plugging phone in) It would bring me into the samsung logo and the blue text in the top right saying recovery, but then the phone would just stop. And it'd be in a boot loop doing this until I unplugged. Now I woke up this morning and I'm getting this new error from Kies. I have the files that I flashed it with last night.

how did it crash in the first place? and also, it's important to know what you flashed through odin to understand what's going on. we may never figure that out so.... it looks like you lost recovery. the only thing left is download mode. (If you can't go into download mode, I don't know any other options.)
read up on which factory image applies to you and odin it. you'll start fresh and then need to root to.

I'm totally fine with losing my root, and my old rom and stuff.. I could care less. I know how to root and its very easy along with getting safestrap going again. However, I was on MK2 and I don't see that in the list of images.
(I wasn't able to put my link in, but I just saw something on a website regarding Odin, and using the "re-partition" check box. I used that(it said to on the instructions) and the thing I just saw said to NEVER use that) I flashed that and with pit. I'm new to odin sooo yeah I don't necessarily know everything that goes on.
Also, the phone crashed in what seemed like a completely random flash... I was literally just on snapchat, things froze up, and my phone started doing the boot animation for Hyperdrive 15(The rom I was running) but it never finished, half way through, the phone turned off.

Mk2 came after those, so do a search. With Odin you shouldn't touch anything except load the file in the second slot. I forget what it's called. Read the Odin tutorials

So this factory image, wouldn't I want one that DOES wipe the phone? Since I just want everything to be clean and new again?

Okay, I finally flashed the MK2 no-wipe on it after many hours of downloading. Now it says "RESET" on odin and it showed samsung logo, and the recovery blue text in the top left, but then that just went to a black screen, and now I'm just getting vibrating every 2 seconds with a black screen.
EDIT: Okay so I tried seeing if download mode still worked, and it did, so I just told it to restart the phone from that and now its back to what it was doing originially. It shows the gray battery with the circle loading thing frozen in place, that stays there for a second, then screen goes black, vibrates, and it repeats this.

Alright so I flashed the full wipe correctly and everything looked like it worked fine. But it just says "RESET" on Odin and its trying to start the phone and it shows the samsung logo but its defaulting to Recovery Mode, but after the samsung logo, and the blue text in the upper left corner "Recovery Booting..." it just black screens and boot loops like that. I believe this is because I flashed a thing on Odin yesterday that was supposed to make the phone go into Recovery(it wasn't working by holding volume and power). Any way to get rid of this stupid default recovery thing?

[Q] Sch-i545 Soft Bricked (Semi-Noob)

Alright guys as my title states I pulled a "noob move" and it looks like I've soft bricked my phone (It won't boot past the verizon splash screen). I've done a little research and I'm pretty familiar with Odin and how it works. Seems to be the same concept as jungle flasher and I've modded a few 360's in my time. I've tried, to no avail, to flash my phone back with the stock image numerous times and I figured it was time to consult the experts. What I've done so far: Downloaded the factory stock restore TAR from Rwilco12's site and put that in the PDA file browser of Odin. My phone shows up in Odin when connected in download mode with a light blue com:4 box. I read sometimes this is supposed to be yellow? Other versions of Odin it is yellow. This instance was attempted in 3.07. 1.85 it shows up as yellow. Regardless of either version, they both fail after the "aboot" step. I've tried two computers and have failed miserably all morning. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Unauthorized Software error

Hey Everyone,
I woke up this morning to an Unauthorized Software message on my rooted Galaxy Note 2. I have been rooted for a long time now with no problems. I have not accepted any updates and have not made any recent changes to my device. I was using TWRP 2.6 and Jedi Rom when this message occurred. I tried flashing back to stock following the directions posted on the development forum but that doesn't seem to get the message to go away. I am not sure what else to do at this point to fix the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

You weren't unlocked when you flashed, that's why the message popped up. Go check out Droidstyles guide and if you can't get the message to go away using it try flashing one of the restore to stock roms with NAND erase checked.

There is no way you got that message unless you were locked. Therefore, you tried flashing something while having a locked bootloader. I recommend looking at stickies. You'll find something
It might not be from a locked bootloader.
I know for a fact that there's something deep in the firmware that can do this.
When I was playing around with mine I hade it do this a few times. And I promise my bootloader is unlocked.
Infact right now I'm running on t mobile with cleanrom ACE and a custom kernel.
one of the things I know for sure that will give you that message is trying to run the wrong modem.
Check an be sure you didn't get a bad radio flash or something.

How would I know if I have a bad radio flash? I cant even get into the phone fully before it errors out and I have to power it down. I have tried several times to follow the directions on the forum and flash it back to stock. However, this does not seem to be working. I am certain my bootloader was unlocked. I have had the phone rooted for well over 6 months. Like I said, I went to bed and when I woke up in the morning it was showing this error message. The only thing that I have updated was super user app. But it doesn't make sense that it would be causing this. Especially now that I have flash back to stock. I cant attempt to re-root the phone either because that requires me to be able to get into the phone and turn on debugging mode.
This happened to me on my s3. I had to use odin and the unbrick files.
where did you find those guides, I have the same problem, lol cant find those guides and for some reason odin 3 wont inst on my pc...

ok so after 4 hrs got it to work.
here go to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040264 down load alternate restore. Once it down loads the file extension ends with XZ, which Odin said was not a PDA file.
It has an odd file extension .xz (perhaps meant to be .gz) so I told 7zip to extract it. resulting file ended in .tar.md5. Put that file on odins PDA section. Boot up your phone with volume down, home and power button pressed to boot up in odin, once it boot up connect to pc and press the volume botton up to start odin download on the phone. the select start on odin soft ware on pc, should fix your phone.

You are doing something wrong, either way this process is to revert your phone back to stock, from there you can root again. Theres no other way about it and is the only way I got my phone off that.
boot phone pressing vol key down, home and power.
connect to pc,
press vol key up
start odin
secondary file on pda
inst
phone back to stock.
If it doesnt work, I might have to see what you are doing via skype

[Q] First time bricking a phone, stuck getting a message saying unauth software.

Hello, I've been rooting my phones for a long time and have never had any issues with the phone bricking on me. I made some noobish mistakes when flashing illusion ROM and formatted the system partition and thats where everything went downhill. After that i could get into TWRP and I tried several different ROMS and nandroid backups and nothing would work, just kept giving me the Galaxy Note 2 start screen that wouldn't go away, I waited hours several times I tried this. I found out how to get back to stock with Odin so I tried that and finally got back to stock 4.1.2.
I then tried the casual root method and got partition errors and when I unplugged my phone and tried to boot it back up all I get is a yellow triangle saying that my phone is trying to run unauthorized software and to take it to my nearest Verizon store. I can boot into download mode still but now my computer(Windows 8) will not recognize my phone. It makes the connection sounds but it doesn't show up in my device list or in my device manager. From here I tried uninstalling and re-installing the Samsung drivers but to no avail it still doesn't recognize my phone. Neither my computer or Odin recognize it plugged in. Can someone please help me? give me anything else to try, please.
casual killed the odin driver...the same thread you restored to stock look at the bottom of the section for the link to restoring the odin driver.
Keep reading.... at least thats how I fixed my phone today. I didnt realize I needed to unlock the bootloader so I ended up with the unauthorized software yada yada yada.....lots of reading, youtube video research, xda posts, trial and errors and sheer luck not to brick it worse and I was back up and running in a few hours learning a lot on the way....dont give up!!!

How did you fix your phone?
I got the message about unauthorized software on my i605 note2. When I boot into recovery, I get the message. If I boot into download mode, I can use odin. I tried in reroot with root66 (just grasping at straws) and it took it. Then, the minute I unplugged, boom, the message.
I tried note 2 toolbox and got now where.
I downloaded original firmware from Sammobile.com. I have to unzip it, then look for it with odin I guess.
Amy ideas? Help??

Stay away from that toolbox. Only use droidstyle's guide. Did you try the vramc3 file? That will make it completely stock again. Then use casual. Then flash roms again

I downloaded odin and unzipped it. I downloaded I605vramc3_I605VZ...zip.
I unzipped odin (I've used it before but I decided to unzip the latest copy just in case there were some upgrades...). I pressed "Pit" and looked for the file. I was unable to find it. So per the guide, I unzipped the .zip file with 7zip. Odin is still unable to find something that I can use. It's like Odin doesn't see the .zip or the unzipped .zip.
How do I get all those files that unzipped turned into something that Odin can find and that I can use?
I know Odin works. Grasping at straws I injected Root 66 into my note2. But of course that didn't remove the offending files so I still get the Unauthorized Software notice.
So in sum, can you tell me how to get Odin to locate the files I downloaded per the guide?
Thank you so much in advance for your patients. I'm not really new to this it's just that this is the first time that I've bricked my phone. Funny thing is the S4 took the goo manager just fine and then I was able to load TWRP onto the S4 with no problem.
I have not unlocked the S4 and I don't thing I unlocked the Note2. I know I used Easy Unlock on one of my phones but I think it was the Razr Maxx.
Anyway, the Note 2 was doing just fine until I tried to put TWRP on it. then I got the dreaded message.
Can't get Odin working
Bean running Beans v21 since it came out and loving it. Yesterday I installed the NBC Million Second Quiz app from the play store, and it froze my phone on a black screen....capacitive buttons would light up, and I could get the reboot menu, but selecting reboot did nothing. No worries -- I pulled the battery and restarted, and was stuck on boot animation. No worries -- booted into TWRP recovery, wiped cache and davlik. Reboot. Still stuck on boot animation. Now worried. Go back into TWRP and re-install Beans v21...It goes through Aroma, but stays on 0% installing forever. Now I figure that somehow the boot loader got re-locked, though can't imagine how that would happen. Boot into Bootloader, and it does say that it is the Samsung standard. Next I put it into download mode and ran CASUAL for 605. It takes, says it rewritten the bootloader, but when it tries to reboot the phone, I am again stuck on the boot animation forever. No problem -- now I should be able to go back into TWRP, wipe data, re-install a ROM since the phone is unlocked again, and move forward. But now when I go into recovery I no longer get TWRP..now I get the Verizon yellow triangle, I assume becuase CASUAL couldn't reboot to complete. I downloaded odin, the pit, and the 605 image and tried to restore to factory, but odin can't connect. I am guessing that this is because CASUAL replaced Odin.
I see a link to a youtube video, but can't open it from work.
So ... Can someone outline for me how to get odin to connect again after using CASUAL. Or, if there is a better next step, I'm all ears!
I am starting to think that someone at Verizon stumble across some way to slam that dreaded triagle onto our note2. Mine worked just fine until a few days ago when i tried to load twrp.
My counter shows 1 and my kernel shows custom (hence giving verizon a way out of the warranty). Funny thing though, i never opened the bootloader, i never re-rommed. I just rooted.
I am stuck. I can't get odin to see the original firmware i downloaded from this forum. I tried unzipping it w 7zip. I have the unzipped files but still odin can't see them.
What am i doing wrong here?
What does your counter show? Does it show a custom kernel ("yes" displayed when you open the note into downloadmode under kernel)?
Where did u c the video? Point me in that direction and I'll watch it for u and me and let u know.

For those of you who have been following my saga. I have now recovered my Note2. I installed I605Vramc3 using Odin for the S3. I had to find the file that I downloaded (C:\Users\John\Desktop\KIES_HOME_I605VRAMC3_I605VZWAMC3_1098177_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5). I then copied that file into DESKTOP on my notebook. Now, I was able to point Odin in that direction. I plugged in my note while in Download mode, injected the file, and waited for the reboot. Botta bang, botta boom, the note rebooted with a flurry on downloaded new app updated.
The only problem I have is that I don't have root. Now I have to figure out how to inject root. But that's for another day!! As for now, I am up an running. I thought for sure I had a $600 paper weight.
The warning is gone and thank God it all works.
Thank you to everyone that participated in this saga. It's nice to know that I am not alone.
By the way, Casual repartitions your device. That may be why it failed for an earlier poster.
Update!
I just finished installing No You Verizon R515. My Baseband is I605VRAMC3. I am on 4.1.2. The instalation was a breeze. I am now safely backed up w TWRP.
Many thanks to Adam. Also thanks to Droidmotter video.
I am stoked I am so looking forward to going back into the Verizon store I went to for help and telling them I will not be spending $700 bones on a new note2!!

I have had a rooted for for 3 years now. G Nexus and now note 2. Wiped....flashed....backed up....wiped and flashed again hundreds of times. 2 days ago I wiped and tried to flash a nightly and bam.... nothin. Went to nandroid back and nothing there! Re booted and got yellow triangle. Wouldnt let me even boit into odin. After hours of screwing around I threw it against a wall.....dunked it in the toilet.... poured gas on it and lit that mofo. Paid 99 bucks and had assurion send me a replacement. My wife said I better not root it! Have made it 24 hours so far. Dont think im gonna make it much longer..... m u s t r o o o o t!

You..., must..., root. You..., will..., root. TWRP, Titanium backup, they are calling you from the path less traveled. You can not resist. Your wife does not understand. You..., will..., ROOT..., ROOt..., ROot..., Root..., root..., roo... , ro... , r...,
You now it was funny. When I finally recovered my note2, I paused to contemplate my success.
I spent a few minutes then reading the posts of those who unsuccessfully tried to root using Casual. All I could think of was the fact that after a week of not being able to use my Note, I was not going to risk it.
Besides, I have my rooted S3. I am running android apps on my BB Q10. Hell, I even have the Nexus 10 and the Ipad (and two ipods) (I devices jb'n of course).
Did I really want to take the time and risk the yellow triagle?
I rooted it. No hick ups what-so-ever.

Follow up -- Simply put: Delete installed samsung drivers in applications and device manager (plug in the device so you can see them, then delete them) and then plug in the phone and allow it to re-install drivers from windows update (or you can download yourself, since windows update can take a long time).
Once I got connected, I was able to ODIN in a stock image -- couldn't use Route 66, as it still gave me the yellow triangle, but VRAMC3 stock worked. Then back to Casual, TWRP, and freedom once again.

[Q] Recovery Mode is broken. Phone won't boot properly.

I'll first list specs of my phone so it gives you some information you might need to help me solve my problem.
Verizon Galaxy S4
Android 4.3 MK2
Download mode works properly. Phone will not turn on unless it is plugged in via micro USB. Recovery mode boot loops.
(Recovery mode) I hold volume up and power after I plug in the micro usb to turn the phone on, and it shows the samsung logo, and the blue text pops up in the corner and says "Recovery Booting". After about 2 seconds of it showing that, it'll just black screen and repeat this boot loop of the samsung logo popping up and the blue text as if I have the recovery keys held down.
What led up to all of this is, my phone crashed and it turned off and tried to reboot, and crashed during the reboot. That's where I ran into the problem with the phone not turning on unless it was plugged in(battery is fully charged). At that time, if I plugged it in and didn't touch any keys, it would vibrate, and then a battery icon with a gray circle loading thing would pop up in a frozen picture. Then after about 8 seconds, it'd black screen and boot loop that. I couldn't get into Recovery at that time, but download worked fine. So then I googled a little and I flashed something onto my phone using Odin and Download mode. The file is supposed to make the default boot sequence go to recovery mode. This worked, but since Recovery mode is broken, it doesn't work entirely. After this, I didn't do anything for a day, and then I read some posts and tried flashing both a Wipe and No-wipe stock firmware MK2. Both of which did not work, since still, the phone was defaulting its boot to the broken recovery mode.
So as far as I know, the only way to do anything to the phone is through Odin and Download mode since nothing else works. I'm really hoping I'll be able to fix this, because I'd rather not pay $100 for a new phone :/
Basically what I'm asking for is what I should do next.. My only last thought is(If its possible) to wipe the phone using Odin, then putting the stock firmware back onto it. (The wipe of course getting rid of that stupid file that makes it go into recovery mode.

are you an unrooted stock ROM??
I'm sure someone smarter then me will know exactly what is going on here but things I'd try in the mean time is another Odin file possibly. I believe Surge has said that if MK2 file doesn't work to try the MJ7 full wipe/Re-Partition one. At this point what you got to lose?

I would strongly suggest the Full Wipe method back to MK2. As long as you can boot into Download mode this is probably the best way to get a clean OS working again. From there you know the drill, Saferoot, SS, etc.

Use sp flash tool and install another recovery. That will surely work. Just download sp flash tool and drivers for your device and install these files in your pc. After that download recovery.img and scatter file.txt for your device. First load the scattered file.txt using sp flash tool, now uncheck all the tick box except the recovery. Now click on recovery and select the recovery.img which you have downloaded. Now take out your phone's battery and connect it via usb cable. Make sure you have installed your phone's drivers. Click on download button on sp flash tool. If not works then remove the usb cable and reconnect again. You will see a green circle saying its done. Click on ok. And try to get into recovery again.

If he's using Safestrap, it most likely means he can't flash a recovery image. He could brick his phone.
Was just going to say that. I don't know much about that flash tool myself... Is it an alternative to Odin? From the little I read... You can flash an entire rom or just something in particular to repair a phone. Either way I don't think the OP should try that method. Stick with Odin.

+1, the only safe option is to flash a clean factory image via Odin. Otherwise say hello to your new doorstop if you mess with Recovery on MK2 locked bootloader
Flash new image >> 15-25 minutes
Root >> 2-3 minutes
SS >> 3-5 minutes
HD RLS15 (for example) >> 15 minutes
In about an hour or so phone is back up and running. No brainer..........

The thing is.. I've tried flashing new images before, and all its doing is overwriting my old one, but the stupid factory thing I flashed makes the default path the broken recovery so I don't think this will work.

I followed the directions for everything as they were given and I got the same result I've gotten after flashing anything. Everything works fine, then the big blue "RESET" icon appears on Odin, then the phone reboots, I get samsung logo, and then the blue "recovery booting" text shows up.. and then the screen blacks out, and boot loops that same thing.

Make sure you're using the Full Wipe image (SCH-I545_VZW_1_20131212083410_mwx72ql56g_fac.zip), and have extracted it to a .tar.md5
Also download the JFLTE_USA_VZW_16G.pit (assuming you have the 16GB version of the S4).
Put the .tar.md5 in the AP section and the PIT file in the PIT section.
Leave the other checkboxes in Odin at their defaults.
Take a screenshot at this point, click Start, and then take another screenshot when it completes or gives an error.

[HELP]ODIN Stock Firmware Flash Issue. Virgin GT-I9300

I'm having real issues trying to get a stock ROM on my Virgin Mobile S3 (GT-I9300) and I'm hoping you guys can help me. I've looked absolutely everywhere for a solution but so far nothing has worked.
OK so a little history about the problem:
Using phone as normal, and then randomly turns off. Turn it back on and I get the two Samsung splash screens loop booting constantly. I boot into recovery mode and do a factory reset - same problem. Clear the cache - same problem. Send phone back to Virgin and they tell me I've rooted and installed a custom ROM which I absolutely have not but they have a screenshot with the custom counter showing '1'.
I've no idea how this is possible, but I would have remembered if I'd installed a custom ROM. Anyway, they send it back because I'm not going to fork out £100 for them to flash it.
So...lots of research later, I download the latest Odin (3.09), find the most likely stock ROM that will work with my phone (Carrier is Virgin Mobile UK). I find this ROM on SamMobile: I9300XXUGMK6_I9300OXAGMK6_BTU. Cannot for the life of me find an actual Virgin rom so this apparently should be fine as it's a generic EU build.
Fine, so I apply it using the AP selection in Odin, connect phone, it goes through and applies fine "PASS" etc.. and phone reboots automatically.
Now, it just sits at the Samsung splash screen (the static white text) and doesn't go any further. I've left it upwards of 10 minutes but no dice. So look online and find threads that suggest booting to recovery and doing a factory reset will do the trick. So try that (Power+volume up+home) and same problem - static splash screen. Balls.
So now I don't know what to do. I either need to try an actual Virgin ROM which doesn't seem to exist(?!) or my phone is truely bricked and I'll finally have a good reason to destroy the thing.
Can anyone let me know what the next steps should be? I would be eternally grateful.
Thanks in advance.
I found the s3 to be a pain when doing a reset. Basically do it twice. Wipe, flash, wipe then boot. As far as I know btu is correct but virmin mobile used to rent their airspace from tmobile who are now half ee. Such a minefield..

When you say 'wipe' do you mean factory reset via recovery mode? Because I'm not able to access that. All I can get to is Download Manager to use with Odin...
I thought you said you could access recovery and you had cleared cache. In that case you are buggered. If it goes through the flashing phase and reboots but you still cannot get into recovery then you have 3 options..
1. Flash another rom but no lower than 4.3. Carrier shouldn't matter.
2. Full on flash with pit file (dangerous and can perma brick).
3. Return the phone under warranty and state that the flash counter also clocks official flashes too, samsung should know this as they make the phone.. staff need training if they say otherwise.

Try the rescue firmware from general forum, follow the instructions exactly as it includes a pit.
It sounds like nand failure, so it's possible that you won't be able to fix it.

I thought you said you could access recovery and you had cleared cache.

Apologies for not being clearer, before sending it back to Virgin for the warranty repair I could access the recovery mode fine, when I got it back I couldn't - whether that was caused by the flashing of the firmware or something Virgin did I don't know unfortunately.

Thanks for the tip - I've flashed the stock recovery and I can now get into recovery mode! Looks slightly different but I can now access the factory reset/wipe cache options so that's some improvement.
I'm just downloading the stock international ROM as per this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/fix-s3-to-factory-unroot-stock-recovery-t2323847 but it's going to take a few hours. Thanks so much for your advice so far i'll report back once the download completes.
No joy
I can however get into download mode and recovery mode now. Is there anything else I can try? Is it possible I can get a custom recovery image on there and flash it with something other than the stock rom?
I've got a feeling you're correct and it could be a hardware fault. Virgin say I can pay £100 to get it fixed, if they have to replace the entire phone that would prove it wasn't 'tampering' that caused it so I could potentially get my money back I guess, if I complained. I think that might be my only option now.
Ok I just booted into recovery mode and I was greeted with this error:
Any ideas what this could mean?

I say this to people who have this sort of problem but I mention the dreaded word and they tend to ignore it but will tell you what to try anyway.
Install Kies 3 for android 4.3 (there I said it Kies) on the top menu bar click Tools then Firmware Upgrade and Installation
Follow the on screen instructions, this process will wipe the phone and install the most up to date original carrier / phone firmware, after this the phone should work and you can then root, flash roms etc , it may work for you so try it, don't just dismiss it because it refers to the use of Kies

Unfortunately I've already tried Kies, and it doesn't recognise the device when in recovery mode.

Make sure you are using the USB cable supplied with the phone and it is connected direct to your PC USB port, ideally the ones on the back but don't connect through any multi USB port connectors.
The USB cables and how you connect can make a difference
