[Q] Audio sync issues on video playback - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

This is my second question-post today, I apologize, but this is the final issue I've been trying to figure out.
I thought it could possibly be related to this post about BT audio lag (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606441) but I just disconnected my jambox when this came up and the audio delay continued on the internal speaker.
I use MX Player Pro for videos, and when I resume a video (doesn't happen every time), the video lags behindthe audio anywhere from a few milliseconds to over 3 seconds. It isn't enough to pause and then resume, I have to exit to the home screen and kill the MX Player background process. Then I can reopen the app and play the video. Sometimes it takes more than one try to get it synced again. It's as if the CPU is struggling to keep up.
Has anyone experienced this?

Any audio over bluetooth will have a delay.
It's possible that if you disconnect BT mid play it will still play the audio at the same point it left off so continue the delay.
I'm betting if you play the movie without BT it's fine?
If not, try enabling/disabling hardware acceleration.
What format and quality is the file you're trying to playback?

I never really watch videos without my Jambox speaker, so I have tested it by disconnecting the bluetooth when the delay occurs, and it continues to occur once the sound routes through internal speaker. I haven't tested it by only playing through internal speaker, so I will focus on trying to recreate the problem that way.
The DTS codec from the XDA thread is the updated one which is fully functional with updated MX Player 1.7.26.
I have MX Player set up for HW+ for Video and SW for Audio. I tried HW+ for both and SW for both and it didn't change anything.
The files vary from .mkv to .mp4, etc, depending on the torrent I download. It doesn't seem to favor one file type over the other. Quality wise has been 720p, 1080p, and less, doesn't matter there either.
Like I said before, it seems like the audio is being processed great but the CPU is struggling with keeping the video up. I could reformat my phone again and do a clean install, although I fully wiped the device before installing rooted .136 this time.

Nope, still happening. I just opened a video for first time today, without bluetooth connection, and there was about a half second delay. It sure is annoying.

Then it's either mx player not handling the format very well or its the file itself. Try bs player see if same happens.

Freezez on video playback using Rockplayer/Moboplayer

Hi guys,
I have been using the phone for 1 week now. Each time I play a video file (xvid/dvix) encoded using Rockplayer/Moboplayer, my phone randomly hangs. The only way out is to.restart the phone. Has anyone else experienced same issue? This only happens while video playback is going on. And mostly it hangs at exactly same position in the file as before. These files used to play fine on Nexus One and iPhone, so the files are ok. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?
/sheeda

I can't give you a reason why they hang, but i do have a question...
why not use the player on the Galaxy? It's perfectly fine and can handle almost any file type and 1080p HD vids...
I'm using moboplayer, not getting what youre talking about at all. Plays smoothly. And as to the 2nd post for why not use stock player?
Well I watch videos on this while I do cardio everyday... a little over an hour each day. Moboplayer has touch controls. You can swype different parts of the screen in different directions. For example: adjust brightness, skip forward/backward, and control volume. Its a bit easier to use than stock player cause of that. That's my only reason really.

I wish I could just do that. The issue is that same media when played from SD card, plays via internal player. However it says "Video can not be played" when played via upnp. I have tried both allshare and skifta. Same issue.
I watch different stuff when at home, since it is on a NAS which has a upnp server, it makes more sense not having to transfer all that stuff.

BIG EARS!!
Bsplayer in hw(Bsplayer engine), mode works great.

I have found, at least with my media collection, that Diceplayer works better across all types of codec configurations.
I normally use BsPlayer, since it has built in samba client and therefore no need to use ex file explorer to start dice player. If BsPlayer does not cut it, then I switch to Diceplayer.
Mx video player does not currently decode all formats i hardware on the prime, so wait a little while with that.
I am finding the default video player after the ICS update to be quite capable. Haven't had to download any codecs, or anything.

Yes, I also have been impressed by the built in player but it has had problems with playing audio on many of my files.

I don't believe there are any of yet. I currently use Dice Player which has played 99% of my videos on HW. For the other 1%, MX Player seems to have the fastest SW decoder. I know Dice has a Tegra 2 plugin (tried it on my Prime to no avail). I wouldn't be surprised if we see Tegra 3 optimized decoding before long. I can't imagine it would be too difficult to do, but since Tegra 3 is so new, there just haven't been any attempts yet.

I agree. The video playback is much better but do not have sound on many MKV 720p high profile. DICE Player is the best for me so far with BS Player second.

I find that the default ICS player is bugged out. Instead of a menu for play, pause and stuff it just shows colored squares (looks like my screen is melting form the inside out) and is obviously bugged out, it doesn't play half the stuff dice player does.
mx player has been treating me the best since I can select hardware or software for the video and the audio separately, allowing me to play 1080p videos and for those that the audio isn't working I can select software decoding of audio. Also MX player is so far the only player that has been handling multiple audio tracks and multiple subtitle tracks well.
@all
OK, sorry, I stand corrected. Just tried out an .mkv on the built-in player which gave no sound at all! Ugghh...
i no this is a bit random
does any one how i can open the default layer app without going through gallery, because am having problem finding my video files through the numerous files on the gallery, thanks

No players are perfect, I keep four players and usually one of them will work.
I thought there wouldn't be a problem playing any video with this device. Disappointed it's such a pain in the ass.

Can you upload a sample? I have different kind of mkvs and i have no problem.
There are a few encoding settings with make problems (like 10bit) but overall i didn't found many h.264 mkv videos which are not playing.

Galaxy S 3 can't handle video..?

Okay so I didn't really think I would have this problem with this phone. I put a mkv video on my phone and I went to go watch it but it stutters I'm not sure how to explain it but it's really choppy. It doesn't complete freeze though. I was using this in the stock video player. This was because I wanted to try pop up play. So I was bummed that I couldn't use the stock player which is the only one that does pop up play. So I tried mx player but it also has the same problem playing back the video. Wth can the s3 not handle mkv videos? I didn't have this problem on my note. Does anybody else have this also? Is there a fix or something? The screen is beautiful but it's not smooth playback its too choppy.

Need more information. MKV is a container codec, not a video or audio codec. What is the video and audio codec, and is it using something like 10bit color?

I've seen that happen on Epic Touch with most mkv format videos.
Try RockPlayer.
Yeah I was also having problems with certain video files. A couple of .m4v's that I tried to put on my phone would crash the video app if I put in or pulled out my headphones while the video was playing. Seems to be isolated to particular file types/codecs.
what is the res of the video you are trying to watch. what is the actual video codec on it and are there subtitles?
You could try VLC for android:

Try something for me , connect phone to your PC thro USB , and then try playing video on your phone , report results ?
I'm not sure how to see what is the actual video and audio codec, how do i check it?
The video files are mkv 720p blu ray rips.
I tried connected my phone to my pc via usb and tried playing video like you said and i couldnt really see a difference.
I think we need to wait for the video player app developers to produce extensions that work with or provide true hardware acceleration for our new hardware, the best player I've found right now for the GS3 is BSplayer lite.
Ironically BSplayer gave me the worst performance on the GS2.
anyway try BSplayer lite on your GS3.
720p bluray rips will kill most portable devices they are MUCH higher bitrate than a standard 720p movie. you need to downsize them if you want to play them smothly
Try MXplayer with their ARM7 codec pack.
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=mxplayer&c=apps
I just converted a bluray movie down to 1280x536 with Handbrake and it plays like butter.

I also experienced problems with the 720p .mkv files I ripped my blurays to for portable use - but moreso with sound being out of sync with the video. I had the same problem with my GS2 when I upgraded to 4.0. I re-ripped my whole collection using the same compression rate into .mp4 and they all play flawlessly now. Anything I have that is .mkv simply doesn't play nice on both my GS2 and GS3 with 4.0.

MKV is not a codec...it's just a container format like AVI.
From my experiance/experimenting biggest culprit is always "stagefright" being enabled , screws up hardware decoding on many levels. On my ATT GS3 , it was enabled by default, i could not play my 720p 60fps music videos , i got "Blade Buddy" it lets you mess with some system settings easily (however i dont know witch setting specifically triggered it), after messing with it and doing soft reboot , my GS3 now performs as it should , can play even higher then 720p , latest one i tried was 1440x810 @ 60fps High profile H264 , all smooth and nice , [email protected] was to much though , all common <=30fps videos play problem free.
In Blade Buddy under Basic settings i toggled off "Compatibility Mode"
Under Advanced settings i toggled off stagefright , then hitting menu button clicking apply , and selecting soft reboot.
There must be something wrong with your setup or codecs or i dont know what because i have a NAS and i STREAM 720p blu-ray rips of about 5gbs a movie off my HDD attached to my router, i stream them and get 0 lag, even when i advance the movie, it takes 1/4 of a second to buffer and play the movie, and again i get 0 lag. i use BS player Lite
so its not the phone, trust me
I have played mkv videos and I have no problem ... the video format is hd 720 mp4
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
So it seems that some people can play 720 blu ray rips just fine with no problem while others can't and need to change the format. I find this rather odd. I haven't tried streaming these videos but ill try and report back but I think it would be worse because if it can't handle playing from the device the added pressure of streaming would make it worse. Somebody mentioned audio being out of sync, I don't have that problem at all. And it's not like the video is severely laggy its like it plays but it stutters as it goes to the next frame its so hard to explain ill see if I can record it and show you guys.

for a 720p bluray rip/hd rip movie, i still run it through handbrake to get the file size down. i set res to 1280xtakewhatevericanget from the original source. output as mp4 in that case (still h.264). i tend to crank the audio up a bit too, since it helps on airplanes or whatever with movie dialogue.
i haven't really tried dragging over a full on 4+gb 720p blu ray rip .mkv file...then again mtp sucks ass, so i'll do anything i can to get file size down.

Fat32 maxes out with 2GB files.
it's not the mkv that's causing it's issue, it's what's inside the mkv that's causing the problems. not just codec but bitrate and other small things could matter. Also, if it's software and not hardware like the ipad, even if meets the criteria hardware wise, it can cause an issue.

Bluetooth audio + Video nonsync

Anyone else encounter this issue? i used other older phone(O3D) before and noticed slight frame drop on visual when audio stream via bluetooth (but was in sync)
Using the same bluetooth.
Galaxy S3, mkv format playback seems to have this issue on stock player and MX Player's H/W decoder, S/W or Fast decoder work but most time terrible mis-sync when forward/rewind.
Tried Stock with above issue, using Using CM10 ROMs even worst (understand its still in process, just tried my luck)
any workaround/solutions?
thank you

Is it the same bluetooth set/device that you used on S2?
cause I experienced some bluetooth device(had this problem with backbeat 903/906) always do 1-3s of buffer before we media audio, voice audio is instant.
Yes it is same bluetooth device. Didnt try voice on it yet but mp3,games etc. Have audio lag and its annoying.

I see,
Hope some1 can solve this...want to learn and try but i just changed job to new company, can't get mind off till confirmation from probation.. >.<
more important than "improve speed" etc which visually can't notice...
using hs3000 here, no delays in music and video.
only lag i noticed was when i played samurai 2, the audio lagged for about a second or two.

DNA + Subsonic + mxplayer = huge headache

So, for those who don't know what subsonic is it is a streaming media server run on your home computer for live transcoding music and video.
That being said, it started using mxplayer for streaming video and I've had nothing but issues watching mkvs. First I had no audio but video worked great. Then I updated to the arm7 neon codecs and now audio works but it doesn't work at all 90% of the time. I haven't used my phone to play mkvs before so I don't really know where to start. I'm using HW+ btw.

Do normal hw not hw+ I've had issues with audio on that before. Even software sometimes works better.
Tapatalked from my HTC DNA - ReVolt
HW doesn't work at all. I've got HW+ working but it starts to stutter badly after about 10 secs.
Do you have the bandwidth? Is your server transcoding? If so, is it powerful enough?
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
I'm 99% sure its the phone. Streaming to another pc outside of my lan it works perfectly. If it was a bandwidth issue it would buffer not stutter.
