Minor Annoyances about HTC and ATT! - AT&T HTC One (M8)

Don't get me wrong I love my phone. But just had to quickly get this off my chest. Minor annoyances.
1. Only the international/developer version gets the HTC Silicone case for the M8 in box. Why not make that standard across all models? This is a beautiful case, my friend works for Verizon Wireless as an Engineer/IT and when we met up a couple of times around January-end to Feb I saw that he had this phone with him trying to test it in real life settings on their network. His case came with the phone in the box. I thought that the case fit well with the phone and the color scheme worked well also. I was praying and hoping that this was the case across US Carriers.

2. No free google drive space for US Carrier phones? Once again international/developer vs US Carrier bias. What gives HTC?
3. I'm fine with Carrier branding on the back, but why that Ugly crookedly placed Phone ID sticker on the back? I know you can take it off, but just include it in the box and leave it as an option to stick on it yourself or save it for warranty purposes.
4. I hope for once in the future Carrier IQ and Bloatware will be optional or taken out completely. This is where iOS and Apple excels in terms of regulating carrier bloatware on their phones. I know Carrier IQ will be on most phones and hard to track sometimes.
5. ATT please include the Sim card that comes with the phone in the shipped box and dont open my phone prior to shipping and put it in there for me. Now I know why the phone was scratched on the corners and by the Sim Door. SMH...
That is all, sorry had to vent. Lol...

Mine came out flawless from the box. My SIM wasn't installed either.....

My sim was also pre-installed when it came to me (Shipped direct from AT&T). No scratches/problems with my phone thought, I love it.
I also could care less about the case and Bloat etc... Easy enough to Root and install a ROM without it. Pretty used to this kind of thing by now, not worth fussing over.

You can still get the Google Drive space. Just call them up.

I do not really feel your pain on any these. i dont need a silicone case. my sim was preinstalled but no sign of my box being opened, it was sealed. i was under the impression it was part of HTC process in packaging that they has the att sim card in them already. carrier iq who cares. you can get the extra drive space no matter what phone you have. and the sticker on the back? seriously. thats not branding. its not meant to stay on.

Yup. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2698548 See this thread for more info.

I hate att too
My phone came in perfect condition, but I bought a case for it which ended up scratching it. I would have loved to get this case with it, probably wouldn't be in the position I'm in. Bloatware will continue to be a problem, it's not going away.
AT&T Sucks.

Contact HTC through their online chat support. They'll send you an activation email.

1. My developer version did not come with a case...so this I think is not accurate
2. Developer build didnt accept email address for free space either,Carriers make that decision, they opt out of the offer...
3. Its just the IMEI?Serial stickers, when there was removable batteries they were under the batteries,I understand point but they have to put them on the phones.
4. AT&T and carrieriq/bloatware,wellllll that probably wont happen anytime soon although Ive had discussions with htc higher ups about it and its not htc,its att that insists on putting it on the phones....lol
5. I have both developer and att branded, the att did indeed come with a sim included and was unopened...Guess its just where you get them maybe

How are those Jaybirds?? I tried a pair of Motorola S11s and they sound like total crap and as a result, I've written off Bluetooth headphones entirely lol. But I really need a good pair.

I completely agree, they are pretty terrible. Not sure if I had a bad batch but they were very distorted and crackling. Didn't even have them in more than 30 seconds bc I swapped them for the ones that came with my one x+.

I still have my beats that came with my htc rezound lol. They actually work great. Too bad htc sold off beats shares.

I don't think they're absolute junk, but I have to agree, they are low quality. The ear buds that came with the M7 were pretty impressive, but I broke them. Now I'm using Beats Touring ear buds and love those, but they are pricey and I'm ever so protective of them, lol

I think it is because everyone is scared of its size. I have one and love it. Stopped traveling with my tablet cause I got this. I admit it is big but not so big as to not be able to fit in my pocket. Everyone says "Oh you got that huge Android Phone." and then ask if they can see it. Once it is in their hands they say that it feels good in their hand and then they like it. It seems that the talk on the blogs and reviews about it being too big has keep a lot of people from even looking at it even though my contacts at ATT say it is flying out the stores.

Att and Samsung are advertising pretty hard for it. I think once people realize how portable it really is, they will consider it. I still get a few jeers from my friends, followed by them admitting it is a pretty sweet device.

I wonder what the percentages of the below are, when discussing iPhone users:
1. Aware that AT&T allows them to upgrade at 18 months
2. Aware that having an iPhone no longer makes you "cool"
3. Are of the age where they can buy the phone on their own without parental involvement
4. Are aware of what they are lacking with the iPhone
5. Care that their iOS device is at best outdated
Regarding number 3 - I knew the iPhone lost its caché when I was at the movies and saw an eleven-year-old (!) with one. At that time I'd already jumped to Android but my wife still had her iPhone 3G and wanted an iPhone 4. I gave her a good ribbing about wanting a phone that even kids have nowadays.
I remember her needing a new phone and pay through the nose for the original RAZR., so the idea was not lost on her - I think she'll go android on our next upgrade date - she's already entertaining it.
Her trepidation stems from her unfamiliarity with the Android interface - I assure her that she can make it whatever she wants, and even recently showed her a video of Espier launcher; I think that sealed the deal, so come August she might have a better (but not bigger!) phone than I have.
I think cause its still new and its a bit over priced.
Definitely because it's just a new device. The Streak was the first mainstream "phablet", but due to a lack of advertising and outdated software, it never took off for anybody that wasn't familiar with the dev work for it. I think the trend set by this phone combined with good software, great specs, and heavy advertisement by Samsung will make the Note line of phones very popular in the future.
The Note already is selling well, as the ATT store I bought mine from only had one white and no blue ones left when I bought mine...lucky me I wanted white. And I live in Northern Minnesota, which you could say is less tech savvy than a lot of places in the US. Goes to show Samsung has a potential gold mine on their hands if they push this market. Right now, you could say it's a niche device, but I think it's going to turn into a mainstream class of devices.
Everybody who has asked me about my phone is absolutely stunned by it. First, they laugh at its size and ask what the hell it is. Then I tell them it's the Galaxy Note, and explain some things about it, highlighting the 720p screen and SPen. They are impressed by that, but then ask, how the hell do you fit it in your pocket or carry it?! If I know them, I invite them to put it in their pocket and feel the size. They are wowed by how big they screen is, yet how portable and pocketable it really is. By the time I am a done showing them everything, their opinion is completely changed, and they admit it's an awesome device. The only people who say they wouldn't want it themselves are Apple loyalists, who argue that their integration and iCloud make it so they could never use anything but an iPhone. I tell those people that they're being ignorant, because you can do basically ask if that just as well, if not better with Android and Google apps. Even still, they admit if they weren't an iPhone/MacBook user, they would like the Note. I have not seem a single person who dislikes this phone so far.
Just show off your device every chance you get, and eventually people will realize how amazing devices like this really are, and realize their full potential.

You need to find guys that think the galaxy s 2 was too small. And the note....just too big. Not comfy to talk on.

I have seen one lady with it and yesterday when exchanging mine. One of the best buy employees had a white one. He said he loved the phone.

The size of this phone freaks people out at first. I remember after getting this phone and taking it with me to work, every student I had was drawn to it like they didn't know what to think. It was comical to watch them all take turns seeing if it would fit in their pocket.
Despite the initial skepticism that they would like a phone this size, a vast majority of the students after messing with it for a second really liked it.
Same thing happened at the bi-monthly staff meeting. It was even funnier than the students...watching a bunch of adults playing pass the phone down the line game. Several of the teachers have either now went out and got this phone or are going to use it as their next upgrade.
I will say that I kinda enjoy having a phone that's not super common

I have seen two others both in the airports while traveling. Most people who notice my phone have seen the ads in one form or another. They know you can write on it!
EDIT: I send this original message while at my son's karate practice. I was sitting there and this very attractive Asian lady comes up and asks me if that I the Galaxy Note. I later found out she is Korean and loves Samsung and Android. She has a Vibrant on T mobile and say she heard they just hacked the GNote for T mobile...I was blown away at this girls knowledge of phones etc. Of course I let her play with my phone!
I then told her she should get a pink GNote and she googles it and you would have thought I was her hero...it was pretty wild how excited she got about a pink GNote although I do not believe it is out yet.
Pretty cool story regarding a simple ole phone!

I've only seen one other person, I was in line at a hibachi grill and while waiting for food the guy beside me pulled out his note, was using the flip-open battery cover case that AT&T has. We chatted for a minute or so while waiting for food, he came from the Pre and was disappointed how WebOS turned out, and said it took him a few days to get used to the size, he's still learning Android, asked me about a few things like do things "crash" all the time, etc, told him I have yet to see a single crash out of mine.
Cool thing was, when he first pulled it out I didn't say anything because he was getting into his calendar and looking up some events, added an event between them to someone and sent off the invite. He was getting along pretty good, and didn't want to disturb him while he was doing work.
Besides myself, I know of 3 other guys where I work with one plus I've ran into a couple other people with one at restaurants. The guy at the local AT&T told me they sold out the first day, so there should be several of them around here.
I have yet to see one in the wild. But any pol look at mine just like you guys shared. I love the attention from the girls looking at it.

too many sheeple that think that because everyone else has one, they have to have one to "stay cool".
I've always considered myself an INDIVIDUAL. I don't buy things based on what everyone else does. Almost to a fault, I'll go the opposite direction of "trendy" things. Hell, I still (when I can find them) wear the same style Nike White with red "swoosh" leather Cortez shoes (the ones like from back to the future). I've worn them since 1976....why...BECAUSE THEY ARE D*MN COMFORTABLE. Same thing with how I dress, my opinions etc. If you don't like it, tough, it's how I am. I got a Dell streak in Oct 2010 because I thought a 5" screen would be a benefit to me, and I was right, too bad Dell & at&t didn't market it. When I heard Sammy would have one, couldn't wait to get it. And I'm right, it's PERFECT for me. The sheeple can squint at their TINY screens all they want and look cool, at least my eyes don't have to squint.

VZW and HTC act as if this phone doesn't exist

I've noticed that the DNA is NOT on the HTC website nor has Verizon done ANY TV Advertising for this phone. They normally swarm the airwaves when a new phone comes out, like they're doing right now with the HTC Windows Phone. Why is that? Is this like a "Test" phone to see if HTC will make a strong comeback with Verizon?

This isn't at all uncommon. Samsung sinks a ton of money into advertising. As does Apple. And it works. Even among my relatively technically savvy friends, they consistently think that the best device out there is going to be either Apple or Samsung. They are barely even aware of HTC. HTC needs a strong advertising campaign, and until they are willing to put money into that, they will never be as prominent as Samsung.
Quietly Brilliant.

imo they aren't really that tech savy if they judge things by tv commercials - most of which have no real specs in them. But yeah, HTC needs to advertise more. My Incredible wasn't advertised enough either.

I went to every authorized vzw dealer in my town on black Friday. mybullfrog.com store, Verizon kiosk in the mall and two separate best buy mobil locations where literally none of the sales people had even heard off the DNA.. finally I broke down and went to our corporate vzw store ( I've had customer service issues with them) and even there the sales rep knew almost nothing about it but they did have it.. it did seem like they aren't hyping it like others have been.. Bionic was all over the media. Not sure if this is good, bad or if it even matters.. just an observation.. although I kinda had to educate the vzw rep on the phone which is a little funny.

I've seen it happen with plenty of other phones I've had in the past. The LG Nitro HD and Samsung Infuse 4G both spring to mind. The Infuse 4G was the first phone with a 4.5" screen - kind of a Galaxy S1.5, and the Nitro HD was the first with a 1280x720 display. They were both fantastic phones that performed well, but never had much of a following because no one was talking about them (except me). When manufacturers put out something that is the first of something, they don't necessarily put a lot of money behind marketing it because the public may not buy into whatever they are selling - and if they create a lot of hype for something that falls flat it has a much worse influence on later products. It is a timid approach to be sure, and they will never topple Apple with that attitude, but it's a common approach nonetheless.
For us, the biggest issue is that it could impact developer support. Personally, I'd love to see a Viper ROM for this phone, but if not enough people get one, the Viper Devs may not bother.
That's a good point... I always tend to go after the "latest greatest tech" rather than what is "popular" haven't had a device officially supported by the cyanogen guys since the Droid 1 ha. I'd love to see more dev's getting on the DNA train but for once I am actually content with a phone as is (except the constant wifi notification and the bloatware) but I have fixed that with the mod's. I honestly would be okay with not having any aosp roms or even custom sense roms at this point... I am very happy with this phone.
One thing I am seeing more and more though is how some apps seem to react weird to the screen resolution. Not a huge deal but it is definitely something I could see people freaking out about had HTC really boosted the hype of this device.. All in all I am glad I got the DNA, as long as stock updates (android 4.2... Etc.) don't take too long, like many HTC devices do, I will be very happy with this phone

Absolutely.
I do not like the lighting on the phone. Makes the phone appear to be made of glossy plastic on the front. Also, the display looks like a cheap sticker on the front. I know the shot is not of the actual phone, but it does the actual display no justice.
Basically, if I saw this press shot when this device was being rumored, I would not have got as excited as I did with other leaked shots. Just a personal indifference.

Actually the Rezound was the frist 720p device by a few weeks and HTC website and the VZW stores were going crazy. There display model had a huge sign over it with the specs with beats and 720p in bold along with an over ear beats headset next to it for you to try out beats. Why can't they do that with the DNA. Even the One X got a lot of advertising. I think it is VZW that really is in control with all this.

Even the One X got a lot of advertising. I think it is VZW that really is in control with all this.

Good call. I always had a tendency to dismiss Verizon's wares because they used to lag behind what was available on GSM networks. (I used to just import all my phones from overseas, since they would come out there months, and sometimes even years, before they made it over here.)
I believe VZW is down playing HTC devices now in general. After the Thunderbolt and ReZound debacles. No upgrades/long waits for upgrades. (More VZW's fault than HTC's...) Mediocre if not bad battery life stock. Truthfully I think HTC devices have been a headache of sorts for VZW minus the Incredible series. I just think VZW tech support is happier if more people owned more "user friendly" phones instead of lots of people owning HTC phones complaining about battery life, heat issues, slow/late updates, or just plain lack of updates. HTC is possibly tired of VZW as well. VZW not picking up the One series and stalling updates to add bloat or tweaks to already released phones doesn't help. HTC's Facebook page was getting pummeled with request for information on updates for the T-Bolt and ReZound, but even with VZW in control most people painted HTC as the bad guy.
Plus business-wise is supporting a hurting company like HTC a good investment if you can make more promising investments on thriving comapnies like Samsung and Motorola? If HTC does go under it won't hurt VZW one bit, so why would they care.

I don't normally post threads like this, but so long HTC One.... JUST KIDDING

I have in my possession two (2) 64gb HTC Ones, and both of them are plagued with various issues. From poor battery life that is not consistent with what's being reported here, to random reboots, to build issues. For a "gapless" device, there sure are an awful lot of gaps all over both of these things. On both devices, there is quite literally a defect on every single piece that makes up the body of the device. HTC designs the best looking devices hands down, but when I look back at every HTC device I have had, they've all had build quality issues. My Hero, Evo 4G, Evo 3D, One X, and now the One- all had blatant build problems. HTC really needs to get their act together. That said, I still love the One, I think it is hands down the best phone ever made (save for my old trusty Panasonic Duramax), it just has too many issues right now. So, I am returning both of the Ones that I have (that I paid full price for, mind you) with hopes that when the black model becomes readily available, those build issues will have been corrected. Some of you here know (*cough*Gunnyman) that I am kinda anal about my phones (went through 5 or 6 One Xs) and I just can't justify spending $700 on a device that isn't perfect. I have way too much money tied up in these phones ($1400 for cell phones, whaaaat) for me to settle on one that is less than perfect. For what its worth, if my first One had good battery life and didn't freeze and reboot on me I probably would have kept it, build issues notwithstanding. The second one I got doesn't reboot, but has terrible gaps and edges so that's a no go for me. I am absolutely dreading going back to my iPhone 5 but it must be done. For now. I am without a doubt going to be trying this again with the black model.
Anyways, that's my rant. Ta-ta. Flame away.
Garrrr. I was hoping you'd start chiming in on different cases for the one similar to your time with the one x. I'm having a hard time deciding lmao.
See you back soon.

If you SERIOUSLY think you are ever going to get any device without any issue you're very very far-off from reality. Every phone has one defect or another, yes even the iPhone 5 has issues. Pretty serious ones too.
Well, in an effort to solidify my decision I went to best buy and played with the black sprint one..... and I like the silver better. Not to mention that I really, really, REALLY can't stand the iPhone and LOVE the One. So call me fickle, but I have now decided on keeping the replacement that I got haha. I now, I'm pathetic. So the good news is I AM sticking with the one. So yeah, this rant was for nought. I do believe that HTC needs to get their crap together though. I'll probably make another warranty claim in a month or so lol. As far as getting a phone with zero defects is concerned- they are out there. I just need to hunt them down. My last One X (out of the 5 I had) was damn near perfect. I love that thing. If they came out with a One X Super+ with all the internals of the One, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I think that is the best designed android phone to date, even besting the One.
@WTFunk- I'll try to start doing case reviews but my new job has me ridiculously busy so it probably won't be the same like it was on the One X. I still have 20+ cases for that thing that I need to get rid of lol. Right now for the One I have the Diztronic TPU case (it's decent but I don't like it as much as the one they made for the One X), the Incipio Dual Pro (holy hell is it massive! That will NEVER be my main case), the Poetic (it's cool and good quality, but not for me), the Poetic Palette Slim (nice quality but feels like half a case) and I have a Poetic Atmosphere on the way. Rest assured, I'll be ordering a TON more
That's good to hear.
I've gone through 3 one x myself due to defects. Still prefer sense and HTC's physical designs to any other brand on the market.
I'm banking on the htc one in black to be newer batches with less defects than the silver but we shall see.

OCD is a real disorder. I hate how much this term gets tossed around. It's no less rude than saying gay or retarded. Just sayin.

Can't compare OCD to being gay or mentally challenged for one. You people with ocd can be married and don't get constantly harassed. And second you don't have a slang demeaning word like "retarded" nice try but OCD will never be on the same level as any of those words.. carry on..

[Q] GS4 Verizon, "Black Mist" Developer edition weird, ugly color? no manual?
Hey I just got my S4 Verizon, Black Mist Developer Edition. The back is supposed to black (according to the picture), but it's this cheap looking silverish color. It's got small silver speckles throughout a shiny black/greyish background resulting in a awful color that makes the phone look cheap.
Is this normal? Anyone else experience the same thing?
Also no quick start guide or manual? I had to d/l online. The box just had a thick safety and warranty booklet. Are they assuming developers (not me) don't need things like manuals.

The picture definitely makes the phone look better (because no flash). In reality the phone is a lot shinier. It looks like one of those plastic parts that tries to look like metal but is clearly not. I personally think it looks like shayoot. Is there a way to add a poll after the thread is started?
Anyway, I bought mine through the Samsung website and it shows a black colored back. Anyone else out there recently get the developer edition from Samsung website? Is mine the normal color? I would like to return it if it's suppose to be black but unfortunately I'm leaving the country for a while in a couple days. Quick questions, I can put in GSM chip for foreign country and the phone will work abroad?
Well we won't know if it's normal or not without a picture. Lol

From the initial pre release pics I thought for sure it was going to be diamond textured so when I opened it up on release day I was disappointed. Was an optical illusion due to the shiny diamonds things. But it doesn't look too terrible unless you compare it to what I thought it should have been

The white also has a pattern similar to the black variant. I'm actually a fan of it myself. I would have preferred a diamond pattern (like the gnex) ..but with that said ..coming from the S3, I've been more than happy with the design/color of the S4.

Yup, thats the normal color, and as for the GSM chip, no.
Yes, you can put a GSM sim card in and use it abroad or even locally like on straight talk for example.

No manual because it is a Dev phone, Samsung expects that if you order this phone that you are a dev/expert and don't need a manual. They even say it on the website when you order the phone.
Color is the same for both retail and dev phone..If you don't like the color put a case on it .

Pretty Wireless Charger Back?
Thanks all, for answering my question and the feedback.
I was wondering if there's a nice looking wireless charger back piece that doesn't interfere with NFC. That will kill two birds with one stone.
I got a wireless charger that apparently interferes with NFC and it doesn't require a new back. The charging pad (underneath my black ugly back piece) results in a small bulge in the back.
If there's a back that enables wireless charging and doesn't interfere with NFC, one that looks awesome, it will solve all my problems with this phone thus far. Suggestions?
btw, the wireless charging kit that I bought was this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Qi-Wireless-Charger-for-Samsung-Galaxy-S4-i9500-Charging-Pad-Receiver-WC-S4-/321164129945?ssPageName=ADME:LC:US:3160

I have a sim from GoSIM that I use when I'm in the UK, which I purchased for my Incredible 2.
When I got the GS4, I cut that SIM down to micro and installed it. The phone came up on the AT&T network, so I'd say it should work just fine overseas. I'll probably not get a chance to actually try it any time soon, unfortunately.

I can confirm that Verizon Galaxy S4 Developer Edition works overseas (outside US). You just have to swap SIM chip and switch to GSM mode in the settings.
Settings --> More networks --> Mobile networks --> Network mode --> GSM/UMTS
I do have an icon of a SIM chip and the ? mark on the top left of the screen meaning that the SIM chip is not recognized (i.e. not Verizon).
Again, all of this is for Phone, I don't have Data plan. I don't have a phone plan -- just pay for minutes and use.

Really tempted to take my VZW V10 back and get a nexus, help me convince myself to ke

I love this phone. I really do, and frankly, **** verizon for making me so scared to hold out on it. I already have the "software status: modified" in the about section, without doing anything to provoke it and a vzw manager tried to tell me my 3 day old phone was out of warranty, thankfully tech-support knows just as little, and they claimed that any non demo model would have the "modified tag" and they marked in my account that the modified status would have no bearing on my warranty. This is the kind of thing I just dont want to deal with around something I own.
BIGGEST CONCERN: vzw V10 marshmallow. do we have any guarantee of when or if it will arrive?
It is pretty sad that a carrier has me wanting to trade in my beautiful phone, for a 6P that is lower powered and less of what I want hardware wise. Thanks for the help guys
The Verizon V10, like all V10s, will be getting Marshmallow. There is no guaranteed date.
You don't need to switch phone but you do need to switch carriers.
How the f did the device show "software status: modified" on a freaking Verizon phone when they locked it so tight that you can't modify anything?

While I'm on Verizon also and agree with most of ur points the 6P is actually not lowered powered. It has a 810, bigger battery and better battery life, fingerprint sensor, all aluminum body, front speakers and louder ones, newest software at ur will, while the camera ain't as gd probably it's still very comparable. To be honest I'm getting V10 but have my doubts and probably will end up with a 6P but we will see, maybe LG will win me over.

But the V10 has a removable/replaceable battery, expandable memory,OIS and supposedly getting wireless charging very soon, probably a better camera and is shock/vibration made. Plus Verizon gave me $300 for a Blu POS I had laying around and with the LG promotion with a free 200gb memory card and extra battery and battery charger it was a no brainer. PS and quick charging

Oh I agree very valid points, I'm going with the promo to so yeah no brainer I figured it was worth trying out. I'm not knocking the phone at all, the build quality looks amazing and feels amazing and I'm one that favors LGs skin but I also like vanilla as well. I'm just saying there's a lot of positives on the 6p as well. As far as battery life the LG will get better once it gets marshmallow. I got the Nexus 6 and doze is amazing. I usually charge my phone at night and take it off the charger every morning but with MM the phone sleeps very good, I usually go to bed around 11 with 100% and wake up at 6 with either 100% or 99%. Nexus 6P has quick charging to (not as quick) and USB type C.
Seems to be convincing enough

The V10 will get Marshmallow.. Your biggest concern should be that the Nexus doesn't have a removable battery and if you are like me you want to keep your music on a microsd card! The best part is when zerolemon will release their extended battery for this phone. But if you want to be cool like all those wall hugging Iphone users BE my guest.

What this guy said. Ditched Verizon as soon as T-mobile's uncarrier initiative happened. Had verizon 7 years and hated it the whole time. Gets in the way of anything good that can happen to your phone. Have to say though, reception was great. Extremely greedy carrier
Lol @ this thread
wtf do we keep having these 'convince' me threads? what makes people think they are so important or entitled that I'ms supposed to be putting effort to convince them to stay with a particular phone?
There are tons of threads/forums/reddits/blogs that have info on this phone and other phones..read them just like we did and make your decision based on YOUR needs, not ours.
I had a z ultra which bent in my front pocket after a while. I baby all my stuff but that phone bent because it was too big and poorly engineered.
