phone freezing up - AT&T HTC One (M8)

anyone having any kind of issues to the phone freezing up??
everytime i hit the App drawer, the phone takes a moment to load my apps, almost feels like it freezes, and when i use the multi task and swipe away some apps, going back to the home screen, it just locks up, had to reboot the phone twice already.. phone is completely stock, not rooted
have a bunch of AT&T apps disabled, and not much of my own apps are installed
have had the phone since the 28th and this problem just started yesterday, was going to wipe to phone and see if that fixes it,
also, every time this happens, blinkfeed is always updating...

Check if you have a lot of background apps running and also check your RAM usage

Randomly unable to launch apps

OK - I'm starting to think I'm the only person that has this issue as I haven't seen it reported..
Sometimes, my Photon won't launch apps. Apps that are already running continue to run and I can switch back and forth between them, but trying to start a new app, it just doesn't start! Fix has been to either reboot, or have it go to sleep and wake it up 15 minutes later and try again. I've had it do this while a system task manager was running, so could see that there was plenty of free memory (RAM) available..
This includes launching apps from apps that are already running. i.e. - sometimes the browser doesn't launch from a search query. (mostly though pressing an icon on the STOCK launcher doesn't launch it..)
Anyone else see this?

Yeah mine seems to do it every once in a while too. I noticed that if you open the task manager and kill the market then whatever app your trying to open will end up opening up right after the market closes.

One of the reasons, I took mine back to the Sprint Store. When they fix it, I may buy it again... otherwise, my OG Evo is perfectly fine.
I can't believe more people aren't experiencing this. I do have LauncherPro installed but I don't think that's the reason. I can recreate this all the time. After installing an app through Market, I randomly can't open apps from the home screen.
Nothing happens unless I force close the Marketplace.
Any input on this?

The new market is absolute crap in my opinion, way to many FC's with it and it just doesn't do what it needs to. If I can go faster than it can download, select, etc then it needs to be reworked, also I get a lot of packet errors, have to download apps two or three times just to get it to install.. Great idea but it needs a patch bad!
I wouldn't see why this is a reason to take the Photon back and go back to an Evo, I mean the Evo is a cool phone but the hardware on it is sub par compared to this phone. I used to have one, and it doesn't even hold a candle. But to each their own.

I have only had this happen a few times I was told that it is associated with the battery manager settings if you don't use performance it can cause issues that was what was causing the muted audio issues the battery management settings put it on performance and I don't see the issue.

I just noticed my battery mode was set to Nighttime Saver. Hadn't even looked at this option. I went ahead and changed it to Performance Mode and will see if it happens again.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Mine does it too. After the update that just came out it seems to do it less now.
Just started having this issue today. App launches and others won't launch unless you kill the "hanging" app or the market.
I have no idea if this is a bug in blur or some kind of hardware defect (memory). It seems to be a software issue.
Problem persists after complete hard reset and app cache clear.
I'm using an 8 GB Samsung class 2 microSD card (from old Evo 4G). It has been reformatted.
Other symptoms: Back button and select widgets become unresponsive.
App count at time problem started: 72
yeah i have the same issues. not sure how to fix it. Usually a reboot does it but man i hate to reboot it all the time.
Could you list any changes, apps, app counts, microSD card, or settings your Photon has?
Mine is working smoothly after redoing my Photon for the 2nd time, reformating the microSD card via the phone, keeping my App count below 70, setting the Battery mode to Performance, and not installing Bump or Sensorly.
Still trying to narrow down the issue but it's looking like it's software related.
still happening
Is this problem still happening to anyone's phone?? It's starting to get really annoying, I tried a hard reset twice on two different photons and the problem's still occurring.
I fixed this by installing the automemory manager. Details in my thread called lag be gone.

[Q] The more apps I have the crappier performance I get

OK my phone has been acting weird for a while. I have a Samsung Vibrant, running CyanogenMod 7. Now when I have freshly done a wipe, the thing runs like a dream. Menus open and close with no problem, no delays or anything when opening the dialer or gallery. I can't say how many apps I have on my phone, but usually when I load about 35-40 different apps, my phone basically becomes almost unusable.
I will press the dialer button and the phone will take 10-12 seconds to open up, the gallery app takes maybe 30 seconds to pull all the pictures up, or some of the pictures don't even load at all. Just horrible lag all around. But as soon as I wipe and reboot everything is smooth as silk again. I wonder if it is the amount of apps or maybe a certain app I am running that is messing things up.
Anyone have any insight on this?
Sounds like your overloading the phone, just delete the apps that you don't REALLY need and you will be good.

Shouldn't the memory manager handle that? it isn't like I have 50 apps running at the same time.

Task killers

Do we need them?
Newer phones has them build in their firmware and have more memory
But the 2010 models like the Htc desire etc needs those cleaning tools

I herd that it slows your phone because you kill like chunks of the android software and you make it load back up again so its slower and makes your battery die quicker.
I can't explain in technical terms, but basically the Android OS is different than say Windows on your PC, where you don't really want to have a bunch of processes running in the background. It actually optimizes performance to have it loaded in the memory, and by killing it you only make your phone work that much harder to either load it when you want to use it, or when it continues to load itself into the memory a short time later.
When I first got my smartphone, someone recommended Advanced Task Killer to me as a battery saving tool, but I never noticed any improved battery life. If anything, the constant checking and killing of tasks made me use the phone more and drained the battery faster.
I'm using go launcher and it has the option of killing running tasks, and once you do, you can leave the phone untouched and come back to it 20 mins later, all those programs are back up and running, so I don't even bother with killing them, just leave it all running. I've never noticed an improvement with battery life either, or noticed any lag with a bunch of apps running in the background.
Best thing you can do is debloat, that way there are fewer apps running, that you don't need anyway.

First off most task killers are just bs.
The real way to stop tasks from sucking up your memory and or slowing your phone is exactly what andy said.
Dl titanium back up pro, and "freeze" or (with caution of course)
Remove them.
Most apps restart any ways so it a waste.
Check your permissions, see what your also are doing im the background, and shut off what you don't like or want.
I use go launcher/locker(sorry about my lil ics joke...lol) as well and that task killer is just like the others...worthless. lol.
I have found that the task killer by gannicus is ok, but again what's the point when **** just reboots ..
Hope that helps
Well, I use htcs task manager to close the browser because if even if you click back to exit it, it still stays open, but that's pretty much it

I use
1. Go launcher which is instead of sense
2. Go TaskManager widget. it is awesome.
3. root uninstaller to delete the crap.
4. Autorun manager to stop the apps that I don't need them to run when I reboot.
5. There is another one is more simple than the first one . it's startup manager
Note: 3,4, and 5 starts when you reboot so to stop that use Autorun manager to stop startup manager and use startup manager to stop Autorun manager and root uninstaller.
Sometimes you don't like some apps to be deleted but they are annoying because they start with the system, so use 4 and 5
I use both of them because each one has its own ability.
Do Not Shut the apps that are important to not brick your phone.
Use it on your own risk
I can explain in technical terms...you should never use them...task killers kill tasks which android OS will spend time restarting, by doing this, your battery and CPU will get used more and you will actually find your phone laggier and running out of battery faster....
I have lots of applications on my phone that need to have their permissions modified...
But I use them to see what crapware is starting itself for no good reason.. Sorry deja but if your app loss itself for more than 2 minutes twice a day?... It's crapware...
My phone my rules... I don't want something running unless I request it... I'm willing to wait for it to load if its goona run smoothly... this is the standard tradeoff quick load or smooth running... But if I haven't used WhatsApp in 3 days why does it run constantly regardless of settings??.. It's crapware

Multitasking issue?

Hey there, was trying out the multitasking on the phone and am experiencing RAM shortage? 2GB would have been great, but as I had the GSII I know that there is a lot more capability with 1GB..
On my GSII I could run more apps in the background than now. With the GSIII I can only have 3 apps working at the same time?! Everything keeps refreshing.. the browser, the launcher etc. Even the music stops sometimes while multitasking...
Anyone facing the same issue?

Apart from the odd occassional main home screen refresh now and again, nothing out of the ordinary for me.
Stock ROM, but running a themed screen and icons with Go Launcher.
Might be worth looking at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1634624
Some useful hints and tips on closing/removing apps. I personally just disabled them, made the mistake of removing some core ones from my GNex and made a right royal mess.
Good luck, let us know how you get on. :good:
Thank you for the useful thread you posted, but I didn't have to remove bloatware on my gsII to multitask? Even though I did remove it after a while it still worked before doing anything. I just can't imagine Samsung will ship a phone, where you have to remove apps to multitask properly?
So you can run more than 4 apps in the task manager?
Sad we in Europe didn't get the choice like in the U.S.between the two versions. As I feel the RAM would have been more future proof..
But putting this aside, I'm really impressed what they have packed into the touchwiz out of the box ! I don't even feel like rooting and flashing, because everything is running just fine.
As I know myself I'll find myself fondling around pretty soon, because Iknow the potential of xda
Just am facing this issue, which is really bugging me atm.

I've got about 10 apps so far showing when I press the task manager button, no signs of lag so far for me.
Memory usage for me is 644Mb out of 779Mb.
Can't think of anything preventing you from opening more than 4 apps on the go.
No that thing you are seeing is the recent apps menu! That is just a chronology of what you opened recently and is no real time multitasking! In that menu you have to press "task-manager". There you'll see the apps which are truly running
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA
Yeah, I did say I pressed the Task Manager button, maybe I should'be been more clear on what I pressed and where it took me.
Anyways, I've attached a picture to clarify that I had at least 10 apps running.
You didn't tweak around the Developer options have you by any chance? Near the end of the list there is a section that says Limit background processes, mine has Standard limit, if clicked, options include No background processes, 1,2,3,4 processes at most.
If it's not that, then I'm out of ideas.
I don't own the sg3 (plan on buying one soon), but I know that in ICS there is an option in settings under developer options where you can set the number of apps allowed to run in the background.
Worth a shot.
Gold luck.

multi tasking is perfect on omega roms.
Thanks for your effort mate!
At least now I know, that something isn't right with my phone... I had checked the developers options before, it was set on standard... I haven't done anything with the phone yet, that's the funny thing :/
I'll check what else I can do when I'M home from work.
I just noticed the issue when I was trying out the chrome and stock browser simultaneously. but the pages were all reloading. Which was not the case on sII.
really weird..
You are still on stock ROM?

I also face this problem of all webpages reloading all the time after switching apps.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
That happens when your phone runs out of memory, are you sure you're not running too many background apps?
Browsers are huge memory hogs, so it's not really surprising when you run 2 at the same time, but it all depends on the amount of open tabs and the webpages within.
The same "issue" appears on S2 (Stock an CM9) and with somewhat heavier usage on the Note.
no issues at all 1gb is perfect i dont need more
I think I solved it! Have to test it later.
Just removed the battery and inserted it again.. I know.. so trivial and didn't do that before dramatizing here thanks anyway!!!

This happens to me too and I very much doubt the problem isn't on everyone's phone.
One gig is obviously not enough on this phone.
Just for the record I love the phone but my browser is the only thing running and my home screen has just redrawn
Hey guys I'm back ..
Now I can open more apps simultaneously, but around after a minute everything closes down. They don't stay on they just close after a while..
I don't know what the reason is, but could you check and open a few apps? Then just look after a minute or so if they close down .

[Q] Periodically having to restart phone?

So I got the S4 a couple weeks ago. First ever Android phone. Love it but I am noticing that things run really well upon reboot, but after I've had the phone on for a couple days it starts to get more and more laggy. I notice that in the RAM section of Task Manager the in-use memory gradually increases AFTER I "clear memory." Like on a fresh boot it will be around 700MB, after a day of use it will clear to 800MB, after another day it will clear to 900MB. So somehow there are applications running that don't show up in task manager, and I think this is what is causing it.
I've done a LOT to speed up the phone. Turned off windows and transition animations, frozen lots of unnecessary apps, turned off broadcast receivers on a lot of apps for bootup... There's gotta be a way to figure this out, I don't want to be resigned to having to reboot my phone every two days.
Anyone have to deal with the same thing/found a solution?
