Looking for a navigation app with no "Internet access" permission. Maps will probably - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Looking for a navigation app with no "Internet access" permission. Maps will probably
be loaded manually...
Hi,
I've spent some time at the market with no results.
I'm looking for an old fashioned solution where you simply load in a map into your device (manually), the GPS reciever takes the required signals from the sky and shows your coordinates on the map.
That's it.
No internet connection, no fancy 'in store purchases', simply a man and his interactive map- just like my grandpappy used to do back in 1845.
If any one knows of such a miracle (preferably from a trustworthy source) I would be most obliged.
God, are there so little people who see the problem in pairing your constant whereabouts and the ability to send said whereabouts to some remote server over the internet?
You'd think that someone would develop a small little tool which only present you your numeric coordinates and if you want, will show them on a standardized map the user downloads (maybe from google maps)...
I'm not a developer but that seems to be quite simple. Corerct me if I'm wrong.
THX!

OSM is a free full working navigation/map app.

Thank you, I just checked all google apps with OSM in their name but htey all required "Internet access".

For downloading the maps
Sent from my beloved HTC One S using (most time buggy) Tapatalk

There is Locus Map Free (and Pro) which does require Internet access, but it also supports offline maps (where you can download the maps in a PC and copy it to the phone). Once you have the offline maps for the locations / city / country (can be a big file) it doesn't need internet access.

Like said above, try downloading a navigation app with offline maps features.
Does the app has internet permission? - Yes
Does it use internet when offline mode is on? - No
If you are still worried that the app uses internet you could always just download the offline map, put the app in offline mode and turn off internet acces on your device.
If you have a rooted phone you could also remove the permission from the app, this way you can leave your internet on without the app using it.
Hope i helped, i would try the app mentioned in the post above!

Thank you guys a lot for the suggestion. This Locus map seems nice but yeah, how can I be sure they're (or any thingie with offline maps) not tracking my location?
Whether it's Real Time (I use GPS while simultaneously doing other things on the internet), Delayed (records everything while offline and then sends the info when WIFI is back (I have a vague recollection that perhaps Google did this)), or Sneaky Combo (the app records everything for some period of time, but only sends info if remotely activated, so to thwart traffic inspection)...
Rooted phone- I wish that was an option, unfortunately a) I myself haven't been convinced yet that root managing apps are safer then the inherent android protection (first search result- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525552), b) the intended owner is not a sophisticated consumer...so... children, matches and a can of gasoline don't go well together.
Damn' I'm a little frustrated...

Ozi (or replacement) for Android?

Hi All,
On my Diamond i use Oziexplorer CE for viewing and using landmaps (I think thats the English word, the Dutch word is "stafkaarten." Please correct me if i'm wrong).
I was wondering if there is an app for android that can do the same. I'll be receiving my hero any day now and this is the last app i need to replace.
Many thanks in advance.
If there isn't any, thats allright too. Then at least i can stop searching
Google maps or Route 66
don't know of anything (Google Maps or Route66 or CoPilot or whatever is NO alternative for OziExplorer ).
Did you try asking the authors of OziExplorer if they have an Android build in the back of their heads somewhere?
Maybe this can be interesting?

sounds interestimg, ill try ...
did some tests with ownmap, but the map utility doesnt work and devs are not responding to mail
P.S: Looks promising, however, there are certain challenges with the conversion of ozi files, some segments are distorted and its about 200m away from the actual point ... In ozi, the maps are very precise. Will test and do some research, I'm shure, theres a solution to the 'minor' problems
Well, the month of august in Spain is the "hollidays month" and for this reason it's possible that developers are absents.
I like Oziexplorer and CompeGPS with my Windows Mobile PDA, and I will try change to Android with a new PDA HTC Hero and test this software Oruxmaps in it.
Greetings
OruxMaps
Obviously I did a mistake in converting, a second try lead a to much better calibration. First impression is very good, OruxMaps shows my position and let me record tracks and logfiles, I can set waypoints and follow a route (not tested yet). First wish: a tool to lock the keys and blank the screen to save energy why tracking a hike ... But as said, very promising application
looks very promising indeed. Does anyone know how to convert ozfx3 files to be used in this app??

never tried it, as I have the original files ...
but you might try demapper from terraperfecta
Can't download it from the market. Known issue?
I've created an Android application called Viamici for which you do not need a PC to calibrate a map - you can do it on a phone
New ideas for Ozi or substitute on Android?
Does anybody know about new developements on the problem: Running Ozi on an android-device?
Next wekk I visit the USA and will buy a Nexus One. It would be great if I could go on with all my Ozi-calibrated maps. Thanks for any idea!

Some encouragement from our side would not be bad: [email protected]
Encouraging?
and this was Ozi's answer to my encouragement last week:
"An Android version will not be available for a considerable time."
Ozi Explorer replacement
Hi all,
Some time ago I wrote crossplatform library for reading Ozi Explorer maps
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/swampex/) and Ozi Explorer equivalent for Linux
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/ozex/) - and even used it in offroad competitions.
Moreover, I started project for Android and got a development version.
(_ttp://code.google.com/p/yozi/).
Unfortunately, it was discontinued due to the lack of time, but if someone want to take a part in development - please contact me.
BTW, I'm rare visitor of xda forum, so e-mail will be preferred way.
Best wishes.
yozi: replacement for ozi explorer on android
I've decided to reinvent the wheel and released alpha version of yozi - Ozi Explorer replacement for Android OS.
Features:
- Topographic maps rendering (ozf2/ozfx3 formats)
- Maps automatic load for a current location
- Switching between more/less detailed maps for a currend location
- Movement tracking using internal GPS receiver
- Import waypoints from GPX, KML, WPT files
- Show waypoint on Radar screen
- Shared waypoints database with RMaps2 application
- Worldwide search for places by name using Google's API (requires network access). You can search for a city, street, lake or river and view it's location on your topographic map.
Can be downloaded here (sorry, I'm novice here and can't post direct URLs yet):
_ttp://code.google.com/p/yozi/
Yozi works great!! It reads directly the Ozi maps files used in the Pocket PC/Windows Mobile Oziexplorer. There is no need to convert the files using a Desktop computer. Like the Windows Mobile version YOZI can read ozf2/ozfx3 files. These can be converted from other format using the normal desktop version of OziExplorer.
Congratulations!
I really recommend it to everybody. Easy, simple and clear app:
http://code.google.com/p/yozi/
BTW: Why is it not yet in the Market?

http://yozi.googlecode.com
- Supports topographic maps compatible with Ozi Explorer CE (ozf2/ozfx3)
- Fast maps auto-indexing on start
- Maps automatic loading for a current location
- Switching between more/less detailed maps for a current location
- Movement tracking using internal GPS receiver
- Ozi Explorer waypoints support (import from .wpt)
- Google Earth waypoints support (import from .kml)
- Geocaching waypoints support (import from .gpx)
- Show waypoint on Radar screen
- Set waypoint as target
- Tap-and-see: tap on waypoint to see direction and distance to it

Hope you'll enjoy the app

is there any GPS software for the X10 ?? (using internal GPS only)

is there any GPS software for the X10 ?? (using internal GPS only)
i sow in GSMARENA that the X10 have:
•No free GPS navigation solution
whats that mean ??
That means that the X10 doesn't come with a free navigation solution. But Google Maps works like a charm if you know how to use it. If you want to pay for a navigation program there's always CoPilot!
how come if he does have an internal GPS ?
will it be posible when we have a root accese? or never free GPS in this phone ??
I'm pretty sure, if you search the market you will find some free alternatives.
Not as good as the paid alternatives but it should be something free there.

I'm not aware of any external GPS-solutions for any mobile phone since the SE P1. And why? The internal GPS works just fine! But if you don't have a flatrate data plan for your phone, sure, Google Maps isn't useful. But honestly, who doesn't have that for this kind of phone?
Check out the nav n go my way 2009 post in x10 apps and themes. Posted a link to download motonav. Works perfect for mine!

CoPilot is very good and it's just a few bucks ..
the problem with a data plan here in europe is, that it is very expensive as soon as you are in a neighbor-country.

CoPilot won't use any data. Its GPS not GPRS, no data is involved
Sorry, that's what I wanted to say ..
Sometimes when you're in a foreign country, no data plan can help you - so you'll need offline navigation. And copilot is an inexpensive solution for this.
bring the topic alive...
i'm from brazil and we have problems with data plan.. and i need gps... for sure that have navigation without use the data ? no gprs 2g/3g, at all ?
my diamond are dying i will probably buy the x10, great screen it have
thx.. and sorry the bad english
I use "Locus" and "GPS status", Locus provides offline maps and can record routes and stuff, but haven't checked if if it can suggest routes, GPS status, shows compas, altitude, velocity and stuff. Also I heard that google maps now has offline maps and it shows your current location
For what I understand he's asking for a navigation software that doesn't requires data access, one that can be used offline, not a free software.
I use Ndrive, works like a charm, but the map from Chile has some flaws, some little cities have only the main street, but nothing too bad when in big cities.
Also iGo is a great alternative, but a little slower than Ndrive.
Both have guided navigation without depending on data.
Navigon Select works great.it uses the phones gps without having to be connected to the internet since it stores the maps on your sd card.

I read that google maps will have offline features in the near future.

[Q] Free non data GPS navigation that runs on openstreet?

I have read about some FPS program that does not require data or any cost and it runs entirely off of downloaded openstreet maps files, does anyoen know what program this is I can no longer find it.
Thank you!!
Mapfactor Navigator 10 Free is a free offline navigation software which uses OpenStreetmaps data files. You need to download the maps on your Windows PC and copy them onto your Touch HD.
URL: navigatorfree.mapfactor.com/en/
Try this: http://navicomputer.com/
The very best offline GPS program I've ever seen is noniGPSPlot which you will find =>here<=.
There you will also find the program MapView. With MapView it is very easy to download kalibrated maps from google, openstreetmap and others. With it you can also download kalibrated satelite fotos and use them like maps in noniGPSPlot.
It is not a car navigation program but it is a GPS program for hikers, sailors, pilots and so on. The programs are free, but because they are so wonderful, I donated to the developer - the first time in my life.

Is there a way to make the program more intuitive, it took me a while to figure out how to type in tampa then it offers me like 6 different options for tampa, i have no idea what tampa I should use when I'm putting in a place. and the zip code is not recognized either.
Any Ideas?

[Q] Anybody know what is the best Offline GPS app for Hiking?

I have looked through google and parts of this forum but haven't really had any luck on finding an app that will show coordinates when you're offline. I know there are apps where you can download a map and store it on your SD card, but I like to hike in Eastern Oregon and Western Idaho where there aren't really any options to get the maps digitally.
I was wondering if anyone knew of an app that allowed you to enter coordinates to navigate there or to have it save your current coordinates so you could return there.
Thanks,
Justin
Did you check out Locus and Maverick from the Android Apps and Games forum? If they are good, maybe come back and do a mini-review? I'd be interested in setting up something similar on my phone.

OSMAnd might also be useful - if your hiking trails are in OSM.
However OSMAnd doesn't do offline terrain/topo.

Thanks, IDK I'll have a physical topo map so I don't necessarily need topo, I'll check it out. I'm more concerned about the Lat/Long Coordinates to make sure I can get back to my car...It's hours away from even remote towns and I don't want to get lost!

I'll check them out and post back if I find useful, I did download maverick and it looks like it allows you to navigate to coordinates. I also downloaded the free version of backpacker GPS Trails and it's pretty good as well, It even has a map which includes one of the hikes I'm interested in. I'll update in a few weeks after I've had some time to try them out around town...
Thanks guys.

I've used My Tracks to record bike rides, and the only issue I've had with it is that I always seem to start off about 200-400 ft below sea level. I can usually get GPS Test app to settle down to something close to actual altitude, but My Tracks never does even if I let it sit for 5 minutes outside with a clear view of the sky before I start recording the ride. According to the GPS Status app web site, this is the way the GPS works on Android.
I swear by Locus Pro, personally. There's a "map tweak" add-on available that allows you to view and download from Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. plus they have up-to-date My Topo maps. Whenever I'm heading out, I download the entire area down to the highest zoom level, in Google terrain maps and My Topo maps, and maybe satellite if I'm feeling like I might want it (though those tiles are a lot larger than the rest). It even interfaces with My Tracks if you want to use that to record your route instead of the built-in tracker.
I've used Gaia GPS several times in the past hiking around the Rockies and it's been great. No issues at all. I'm not sure that it's the best, but it's worked well for me.
My fav is Oruxmaps. You can use mobile atlas creator to create offline maps from either windows/mac/linux. It's java based.

In the default Google maps app, hit the menu button and go into settings, then labs. Enable "pre-cache map area". Then go back to the map, and long-press on the area you'll be hiking. Tap on the location detail, then down at the bottom you should see "pre-cache map area". That will save the area within 10 miles of the location for use when there is no data service.

Osmand has a car parking plugin that not only records to use as destination the location where you left you car, but also the time you must return to it. You can also show the current location, create a POI for it and do whatever you like with it.
Try Spyglass, it's by far my favourite nav app. It works extremely well when offline with just gps signal and top-notch for off-road navigation, hiking and camping. It's crammed with all that necessary data like gps coordinates, current azimuth, altitude, speed, potential arrival time to your target and much more. You can also save locations to return to them later and share locations with your friends.

Well, it's not that simple actually. You can't download entire maps. You can pre-cache 10 square mile areas around locations.
Works well if you know where you're going .

Have you looked into the new additions to Google Maps? I think they're increasing the offline capabilities (according to their talk yesterday or the day before).
http://www.androidcentral.com/google-maps-android-getting-offline-access
Although google maps is excellent and the new features are needed, orux maps includes google maps within along with just about every other map source available.
I havent heard of any apps that do offline route planning and navigation though, thats a different story.
Oruxmaps looks good but I don't think it does what I'm looking for. I need complete "turn by turn" navigation offline (just like car navigation ).

Well, SYGIC is great. Me and a collegue both tested NAVIGON and SYGIC and SYGIC is by far the winner!
Google Maps "offline" is not recommendable. You only will download a 10x10 tile. Not more!
Google announced they will be adding full offline support (not just a 10x10 tile), but it's not out yet.

ZANavi for android.
It's a fork from NAVIT. Free, using free Openstreetmaps, you can download entire countries, or even the whole world lol. There is a possibility to donwload only a limited region on navit's website (google it).
Not as sexy as paid versions but it does the job.
And people speaking about google maps please provide correct info. Offline maps in it is only an anounce, with no ETA.
I use GoPilot Live Pro and like it. I think they have a free version you can try, but eventually, you will want to go to the PRO version. If you find a map error, you can submit a correction to them and they will fix it. In addition to that, I also run WAZE...it's an online map service, but has the best info on Police/traffic congestion/accidents because it's totally based on user reporting. I don't know why, but their routing is attrocious. I use CoPilot for my directions, and check in on Waze to check the road conditions ahead. To use Waze, I just tether my phone to the Prime.
Bob
I haven't really used it myself for navigation, but Osmand is superb for viewing maps and tracking. It is easy to download vector maps for each country from within the app and there is a wide variety of online maps. The navigation is provided by Cloud made, YOURS, OpenRouteService, or the offline option.
I've tried Navit, and it works, but the UI is disgusting.
yeah try ZANavi. its free, its offline.
and if you find the time help to translate:
