[Q] Odds of receiving a completely rooted/flashed HDX? (On 8.9) - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hey,
I've had my HDX 8.9 for quite a number of months now (virtually since release). I've been keeping an eye on this forum, waiting for an update on things. I'm really grateful for the work that's been done so far; some of you guys work hard to unlock these devices, so thanks, seriously.
I'm really looking forward to getting this thing to stock Android, since the device itself is a stunning piece of kit (both aesthetically and in regards to hardware specifications).
What are the odds of this device (and of course, the 7" model) being completely unlocked, and having stock Android?
If so, what kind of timescale are we looking at?
Thanks for the replies in advance guys.

Well it's not completely unlocked now but having a Rom slot with the AOSP rom is fairly good if not very good. I have nhad one problem so far and that auto rectified.
On a time frame I don't think anyone is sure yet. Just have to keep your fingers crossed.
(Would still like bluetooth tether to work thought on AOSP)

Honestly everyone in here is working on rooting when time from their real jobs allow. The first thing I learned in the android forums several years ago is not ask for a specific time frame. It could be tomorrow. It could be August. It could be never. I am very impatient myself and can't wait for working root. In due time the devs will come up with something. They are very good!!!

odds are slim im afraid, im resigned to having to use the google accounts in gmail that i managed to set up before losing root and some accounts using the email app
not ideal, actually pretty annoying because of some critical apps (and no bloody language selection in the keyboard, and etc) being missing, but i can live with it
no root means ads in browsers, so thats a big deal for me, as browsing is a killjoy much of the time
not a great reader either - you really need amoled to read well on dark screens (if youre like me)
so id gladly get rid of mine and buy the tab pro 8 incher tbh

Um... dude how the hell do you think they have been able to sell it for such a low price + high end specs? Without the Amazon "offer" system, they would be making little to no profits whatsoever on the HDX. It's surprising they are making any profits on this at all on the HDX, considering their recent price drops.

Without the constant barrage of unwanted ads it would be a million times better and the hardware is no better than any of the competitors, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 in all of them and arguably better build quality in the Nexus at least. IOW the ads are BS.

If it's ads are so hard to deal with, why didn't you just pay the extra 15$ to have them pre-removed? You talk like the ads are the worst thing to ever have to be dealt with, when it's just ambient noise.

I bought a Viewsonic G-Tablet. Did I make a good choice?

What do you like or not like about your G-Tablet?
For 299.99 shipped I couldn't pass it up.
Did I get a good deal? Should I have picked a different tablet?
Is there anything beside viewing angles that I should have to learn to put up with?

You should have spent another $100 and bought an asus. There are multiple issues that don't exist in the asus and are well worth $100
Asus got its own perks... and besides viewing angles this tablet is doing what I need. I see no other issues unless you have to have HC OS.

How does this help him? Buy an Asus, ipad, xoom or whatever the flavor of the week is?
The dev community and the price tag make the g tablet a win. If you were forced to run stock that's a different story.

Where shall I start.....
Hardware accelleration is hacked at best.
Quality control is less than stellar
Viewing angles are horrid
You have about 50% chance of soft bricking your device whether you customize it or not
You have about 5% chance of hard bricking it doing the exact same thing everyone else does and they have no issue
This product is most definitely at the end of its life
The newer tablets work with the market out of the box
The newer tablet have hardware acceleration
The newer tablets have better screens
The newer tablet have support from the manufacturer
He asked for opinions. IMO spending $100 for way better viewing angles, newer software, support from a proven laptop/netbook manufacturer, google market out of the box, and official support from app devs as these tabs are authorized to have the market.
BTW.....most of the top devs are either moving to the asus or something like it. As well as all the top devs who haven't jumped into the tab market yet are gettting the asus or something like it. If you want to follow the dev community then buy what they are buying not what they are putting down

If you bought this tablet to screw around with, it's teh awesome.
All tablets are obsolete about 5 months after they're announced, let alone shipped. That doesn't make any of them any less useful. Android support from the manufactures is currently the thing that is most horrible compared to that other tablet OS - where you get an update, and - well - all of the devices are updated. Android updates? Yeah... up to each manufacturer. Good luck with your 3 - 6 month old tablet, the new OS will be on the next tablet. Welcome to Android, it's Open! And Free! Yay!
You made a bad choice if you think you did. If you're happy with your choice, you made a great choice.
If you have doubts or regrets already, and you can still return it, DO IT. Get something else. Maybe even a different OS.
I'm quite happy with mine, and I've had it nearly two weeks I'm learning a lot, and the price was right. Personally, for $400, I'd still NOT have an android tablet, but that's just me.

All nice...but...none of this is what the OP asked. He/She wanted to know was this a good purchase at a good price. I'm sure he/she saw other tablets on the market and shopped within budget. There's always a step up you can spring for, show me a better tablet at or under $300.00 and I'll recant.
Should I buy the BMW, why not the Mercedes.

is a huge deal IMHO. I don't recommend anyone buy a Samsung phone because their support sucks (even Google Android devs can't stand them and hate working with them). While their hardware is great.
HTC is the best smartphone maker out there - hands down. The continued support they provide the community and their phones is second to none. Look at how many of their old phones are still getting updates? My Evo is almost a year old and is about to get Gingerbread direct from HTC (even though CM7 is out for it).
So that's another thing to look at. You don't want to drop $300 every 6 months in order to maintain support - you want to find a device made by a manufacturer that has a proven support track record - and Asus is one, Acer is another. Viewsonic is not. We're in an age where, while there is new stuff coming out daily, the existing hardware is still viable due to the community and the manufacturer support (when you pick the right one).
I think it's often overlooked.
Quality is everything to me, my Xoom does everything I need and it's stable, plus it will most likely get regular updates to issues and featurees. Still, it looks like a great tablet compared the Galaxy Tab.

That's a good point and the reason I chucked my Captivate in favor of the HTC Inspire. I admit that I didn't realize how bad Viewsonic's support was going in, with that said, I still think this is the best choice at or under $300.00 Now if the OP wants to fork up the extra cash I say go for it, I looked for the Asus myself and may infact purchase one whenever they become available.

I didn't seriously consider any tablet when they were 400 dollars or over. I would buy an Asus down the line (when it is close to obsolete) when it hits 299.99 or lower.
However I was not aware Viewsonic did not support the G-Tablet very well. Is support in this forum from developers going to dry up in the next year? If I could get year out of this tablet I would be happy. Obviously I hoping for Gingerbread. Or Honeycomb rather? I am a newbie. (can't you tell?)
Its hard to say what support is going to look like, but the older this item gets the more development its likely to lose, its the natural order of things.

There are different factors too.... Look at the Nexus One. Still getting updates (albeit it's Google's), but TMobile is still pushing updates for the myTouch.... The Evo is 1yr old. Others are older and still getting development from the community at-large. A company's willingness to be open to the community contributes as well....

Thinking of getting an NT today.

Does it seem like they will eventually figure out how to get custom roms and kernels, or is it still up in the air as to if its even possible. And I've read of the possibility of b&n doing an OTA update that would close the door on the current rooting method and side loading of apps, is there any reason to believe they would? Or is that just paranoid speculation.

OTA updates to the BC broke rooting so I assume a OTA to the NT would do the same. Usually rooting was restored in a few days. Custom kernels are a different issue and currently is unknown.
Kindle has CM7 booting on it. may have to go for the kindle over the nook tablet. Custom roms and kernels are a big selling factor and the kindle seems much closer to that.

True... Sadly, I doubt the higher ups of B&N really care about that small 1% for whom this is a concern. I'm still on the fence myself, but for me it's a NT or just save my money and wait; The lack of uSD kills the KF for me and I don't need/want a tablet enough to justify anything with a higher pricetag.

I think its a little early to say its being written off. The awesome developers on this forum are still working on it, and probably others too. Even if the fully rooted device is as far as it goes, it is still a great device for the money.

Not likely. Stopped by B&N on the way from class today and saw 3-4 people walk out with the NT during the time(30 min?) I was hanging around talking to the "tech". They're still selling quite well, but time will tell if they can keep it up.
B&N couldn't care less about losing sales to those who aren't buying their low cost eReader to use as intended. There is little to no margin for selling it as a general purpose tablet so they really don't care that those who can't load a custom ROM aren't happy with their device. Lot's of more expensive tablets out there for those who want to do custom development and a Nook app for those who want to buy their online products.

I wonder if the Kindle Fire is actually helping NT sales. The KF sell people on the idea of getting a 7" tablet, but they shop around and finds that the NT has better specs for a little more. They read reviews like Engadget that say the NT plays videos smoother. The NT is suddenly on their radar.
The average person wouldn't care a bit about the bootloader, though they might be disappointed to find out about the 1GB limit for own content.

I wouldnt mind buying apps if b&n actually had any in thier market. They dont have crap.

Atleast for me the NT led to a kindle sale. Custom roms and kernels are a big deal to me, and I'm guessing the kindle is a week or two away from CM7 and most likely CM9 as well. And maybe the devs figure out a way around NTs locked boot loader, but there also seems to be a good chance they don't. It was a simple decision.

I keep reading on various forums that the locked bootloader is a Nook Tab killer. Why?????? Please educate an old man as to why this is such a big deal. Within 3 days and less than an hour of tapping, I was able to sideload Amazon App store the Whole Kindle store, Google and a whole host of other sites that have content and applications for free or for sale. Already there are people who have rooted the tablet. Please tell an ignorant old man WHY it is so important to unlock the bootloader. What would you do/have once you unlocked the bootloader that you can't do without? Is it just because the locked bootloader feels like a slap in the face to developers? I mean what more would you do to it that you can't already do with it locked down?
My Tab does everything and more than I'd ever do with a real tablet so I'm just very curious as to what all the fuss is about.
Custom ROMS and kernels allow you to really extend the life of your device (meaning the device won't seem outdated so quickly). The CPU can be overclocked, the voltage tweaked for better battery life, newer versions of the android OS can be uploaded, etc.

Question: What happens when B&N releases an automatic update (replacing your system and your downloaded apps) and it closes the hole that you used to install additional apps?
Answer: We don't know. Having a way around the bootloader (eg, booting SDcards) gives some assurance that we will be able to root future versions, allowing continued "unauthorized" apps.

Here's why:
- A regular build of Android is better than the dumbed down version used in the nook tablet line.
- Ice Cream Sandwich is 10x better than Gingerbread.
- A tablet version of Android is better than smartphone version used in the nook.
Thanks everyone for the quick education. I understand much better now. It does appear that with a locked bootloader the customer is at the mercy of the vendor. They control the software, they control the hardware you just bought and paid for. I get it now. Sounds like I just rented a Barnes & Noble portal to their content. They can close the back door to any other apps anytime they choose. Almost doesn't seem fair.

Considering this tab

Just wondering if there are any plans to put CM9 on here and how is the dev support for this device?
I know the original nook was a modders dream, but that was a while back, and since then there have been a slew of tablets release.. I've been considering this device, just not sure yet..
It has quite a few advantages over the competition for sure.. Just heard this one is much more locked down..

The locked bootloader prevents CM7 or CM9 or any other rom on it. If/when the developers figure out how to get around this, then I'm sure it will have it.
Hm... interesting.

Fair enough.
As others have stated, it is locked down. But so far I am actually loving the thing. Personally I prefer the form factor of this tab over others, and it is in fact suprisingly fast/great battery life for the price of the thing.

So far side loading has taken care of anything i've wanted to do on the Nook Tablet. The locked bootloader hasn't restricted me in any way. I compared the Nook color, the Amazon Fire and the Nook Tablet side by side and chose the Nook Tablet over the other two by a wide margein.
although there is no cm9 for it yet... i reckon it still works great with a launcher!
You guys may have just sold me on it.
I must admit.. there was a lot of attention to detail put into the ease of holding/weight and as far as 7" tablets go it is pretty serious business.
Just running an AOSP ICS rom I must say I like the OS, task manager ect ect ect.
I must say dev support here at XDA is a major determining factor in any of my mobile/android based purchases though.. I knew when I got my Captivate devs were going to carry it as far as they could or my contract was up.
That was almost a year ago and now that is on ICS I think it has a lot of life left.. so I really am hoping the nook tab gets the same.. Just hard to say since there are so many other tablet options now.. still great bang for buck.. just don't know if it will bring in the same support as the nook color.. making it hard to jump on.

How can I survive a transformation to iPhone?

Hi all!
Been happy with my Android workphone for two and a half years now. But my ol' Desire is getting a bit tired and out of date. So I will get a new device soon.
But new corporate policy is that we only run iPhones as workphones. So my next will probably be an iPhone 5.
I know it´s a mighty fine handset I'll be getting but this ol' dog is a kind of a droidy dog. I´m clearly beeing thrown a bit outside my comfort zone here.
So I´ll gladly take any advice on how to handle the green abstinence, tips 'n tricks about managin' stuff in iOS and maybe the odd "hang in there".
Try to jailbreak it for one, sure it won't be exactly like android but it will be close enough and there are some pretty cool stuff you can do when you jailbreak your iphone. My friend was able to have an up and down scroll-able screen for his apps (kinda like the app drawer for gingerbread), as well as adding actual widgets.
Quit your job und change to a company which uses androids
Get the goophone i5 =P
Get a Goophone i5. But seriously why are they forcing the iPhone on you. I would try to convince them that it will slow your productivity since its slower to write emails/texts on because it doesn't have swype. I guess companies use iOS because its easier for new users and iOS never changes.
Completely wron section. All iphone decusions should use the sister site

You can't survive, there is no life after android.
The little green monster that ate all my free time told me so.
My brother's iPhone 5 arrived in the mail today, and it's a very impressive device. You'll be fine.

I deal with it by having an android tablet. My company iPhone is good to make calls, text, email, and web browse. Past that it is largely useless. I save $100/ month by not having the phone bill. It sucks but it is worth it.

For the people who likes to custom and improves better features in the devices, Iphone is not a good idea, but sometimes we need to accept... And maybe by a Galaxy S3 and enjoy both :good:
Vini
Objectivly speaking now, i think iphone might be morw than suited for work related stuff.
It will run the required apps, it will run them smoothly, and generally bug free (less bugs than a full on modified rom for android most likely) . What would you really be using it for? Work email, work calls, work texts.
You can always have a personal android phone for leisure, tinkering and gratifying personalization. The iphone will do what it can, and do it good. The android will do what you want.
Ever had a sex change? yeah thats pretty much the contrast here
Leave the job. The company is doomed anyway.
Get an android anyway. A policy like that sounds like you work at the apple store.
Put a case on it, and once in a while ask it questions to act like you have siri.
You can pull the wool over a sheep's eyes.
They can't tell you have an android because it functions like iphones, maps, web, txt, and call.
Also, are you paying for it or they are?
If you're paying get android.
If they pay. Well, ..... Nice knowing you.
Cut off every part of ur body that touches it

Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So, we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight.

[Q] A good "first android phone"?

Jumping ship from iOS to come to Android but with all of the latest great Android phones out there, it's hard to choose which one to pick. I'm familiar with Android already so I know what to expect. The question is, which of the latest and greatest Android smartphones would make a good "first android phone" to really get a good feel of the Android OS.
Edit: Woops, forgot to mention my carrier. I can go with Sprint or T-Mobile.

Which carrier are you planning to use for service? As this will depend which phone you should look into. If you really want to get a good feeling for Android the Nexus 5 is an excellent choice (Not available on Verizon) with the fastest updates, pure AOSP Android and great development support if you want to get into customization. The Galaxy S4 is also a good choice (Available on all major US carriers) it runs Samsung's Touchwiz on top of regular Android, Touchwiz adds many of it's own features to stock Android. However it has slower updates then stock Android and not everyone likes Samsung's customizations. Let me know if you still have questions.

Yea, I have been looking into the Nexus 5 a lot. I actually already ordered it but with the 3 week backorder, I have time to cancel it and pick something else if I decide I like something better. Thanks for the advice.
I'm wondering, do you have a Nexus 5? Because I'm reading reviews about a "washed out" screen but I'm not sure what they meant by that exactly.
I'm thrilled with the LG G2. I spent the past couple of years on the Galaxy Nexus and I don't mind the additions to the UI that LG brings, including some great camera software and extra multi tasking options. The screen is arguably the best on the market, it comes with 32gb, tri band LTE capability, world phone functionality, a 13mp camera that is neck in neck with the iPhone in reviews, and it's only $99 with contract at Best Buy on all carriers. I believe you can get it online or in the store and get some kind of $50 gift certificate deal too.
Those that prefer pure Google Android can argue, but, like the Moto X, there really is no bloatware and LG adds functionality straight up Google doesn't have including better camera software. AND, in about a month it will have Kit Kat.
Totally worth a stop at Best Buy to play with it.

I don't personally have a Nexus 5 (I have a Verizon Galaxy S3), but in general reviews have been positive. What they mean by "washed out" is colors may not appear to be as sharp or vivid or blacks might not appear deep enough, keep in mind what appears "washed out" to someone may not be to another person as result this can be somewhat subjective.

I'm praying for you man, but honestly you're not missing out on much. 32gb Black isn't even shipping until December, so technically you could get the phone at the same time as everyone else if you raise enough money by December 3rd.
