[Q] magnetic bits??? - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Firstly, whats the correct term? Is it a magnetic port/plug/connector????
Anyway Main question: What can it do?
Can it be used for connection to laptop for file transfers etc????
If yes to that, what about MHL (think thats right, the micro usb - hdmi)?
Just wanna keep them little doors shut at all times, if it cant do data then that doors gonna get opened a lot and probably damaged rather quickly

It connects to the magnetic dock. Yup, you can do file transfer between laptop and phone WITH the dock.
There's also a wi-fi dock by Sony, with which your phone charges and you can also transfer files via wifi while doing so.

Pretty sure the Magnetic Dock only charges the phone.. To make use of the magnetic charging port on the phone, you can either get Sony's official DK36 magnetic charging dock, or you can get an after market magnetic charging cable... But you can never transfer data out of the magnetic port - it can only be used for charging.
The only way to get data from a physical cable out of the phone is via the microUSB port on the phone which is covered by the big flap. This will also charge the phone at the same time.

I'm not too sure on that one. I suppose if you wanted to charge the phone as fast as possible by using the dock and you wanted to do file transfers at the same time by using the USB port.
But i'm not too sure what would happen if you use both the magnetic port and the microUSB port on the phone at the same time.. You'd certainly hope that the phone wont explode.. I can only assume the phone will only let one one source [ie: the Micro USB port or the Magnetic Port] charge the battery at any given time. But i have no idea : )

cheers guys, thats a shame. i suppose it will help with the lifespan of the doors but woulda been a hell of a lot more use if it could transfer data...... oh well lets hope sony have that sorted by the time the z6 comes out (at the rate of one every 6 months thatll be my upgrade in 2 years) or that in that time they manage to make an open waterproof micro usb socket

You can check out wireless (WiFi) transfer apps. I know AirDroid is a popular one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sand.airdroid
It has pretty amazing capabilities. Maybe it will be good enough for you so you won't even have to use the USB cable very often...

Charging tablet - with and without cradle?

What's the process to charge the tablet both with and without the cradle? Do you have to uncover/cover a charging connector each time due to the waterproof nature of the tablet? Does the cradle make the process significantly easier (e.g., is it worth the money)?
Charging with the micro USB you have to pop a flap open to access the data/charging port. Not got a dock yet but there are two pogo pins on the side of the tab so looks like you can charge with no need to open anything just drop the tab in the dock and she will charge.

Perfect! it's worth ordering one then. Thanks!
UPDATE: Estimated ship date 20-June. I guess they are popular!
I had the tablet and cradle for about a month (Japanese), the cradle is worth it!

I bought two cradles with mine, one for the office and one for the bedroom. They really work great, very simple but as mentioned you just drop it in and it starts to charge.
What's also nice is Smart Connect, a pre installed app. When docked you can get it to do multiple tasks, like open the clock, mute the sound during a specific time, etc. Smart Connect also works with Bluetooth devices, MHL connectors, NFC, all sorts of external connections.

but dock works great only with those covers that are the same type as Sony original one.
I am also considering getting a cradle but I have a question. Is the USB port still accessible when the device is docked? I would really like to use USB peripherals while having the tablet inside the dock.

Unfortunately when the device is inside the cradle(my cradle modell: SGPDS5) the USB port is covered so you can not use it.

Sad, that. The location chosen for the XTZ's USB port was not a wise choice. You can turn the tablet upside down and put it into the cradle when you need to access the USB port; however, the cradle will not charge the tablet when it is in that position.

I think the USB port location is bad but goog at the same time, for example when you are playing and hold the two extremes of the tablet and durring you can comfortably charge it.However this location is problem when you put the tablet to the cradle. Your idea has a little problem because i put the tablet to the cradle upside down like you said and the power button and the notification led is covered. but its not a big problem because this version of android which running on the tablet has an opption where you can set double tap wake up action

Wireless charging case for ZU?

Does anybody know of the existance of a wireless charging case for the Xperia Z Ultra?
Given that there are 2 external contacts for the magnetic charger plug to attach to, I would have thought that it would be relatively straightforward to create a case which has the receiving coil in the back, and which connects to these contacts to charge the Ultra.
They seem to be out there for the Z - however, an internet search doesn't seem to come up with anything for the Ultra. Or have I missed something?
(This is an example of what I'm talking about, but it's for the Z, not the Ultra: http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/qi-wireless-charging-case-for-sony-xperia-z-p38098.htm)
I was giving thought to this just last night. I didn't find anything though. Granted, very little actually exists for our devices yet.

Having to put a 'specific' case on it to wirelessly charge seems pointless to me. The only reason I liked wireless charging was because I wasn't keen to wear out the micro USB port...
place it on the wireless dock... or
place it on the magnetic dock...
same thing really... you still need to place it on a particular device/cable to charge.. however one requires a case...

Its a convenience thing though. You can just plop the phone down on to the pad or whatever is charging it & not attach a cable etc.
I've been eyeing up the Lumia 1520 partly for this reason...

Wireless docks are easier than the magnetic docks from what I've seen, but the point of it for some is to save wear and tear on the usb port.
I reckon that it would be pretty easy to modify a Qi wireless charging card like this one to connect to the magnetic dock pins on the Z Ultra. But I'm pretty sure the charging rate will be quite slow. I just use the magnetic dock or magnetic USB cable instead.
You may wana consider this...it works for z ultra, which I m using as well.

It actually is microUSB. I lost my OEM cable (which is slightly different, i think they added a couple pins to enable fast charging) but I use a motorola cable and it works fine for charging. it just takes a ridiculously long time and it doesnt charge while you're using it. unless you have a B&N store around you (which i'm going to assume you don't) you can't really get a new cable. maybe online but i wouldn't do it, chinese cables are cheap, bad, and potentially dangerous

Yes the B&N cables are special, the pins are longer and more of them to tell the nook to fast charge. But as you found out, any micro USB cable can work, just slow slow charge it. And you can't use the device and charge at the same time as you will be using more energy than is being supplied. Oh another help is to turn off wifi when charging from USB, having that on will have the device charge slower as the the radio will be accessed occasionally.
I did find this http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FMMPDT4/ref=twister_B00FMMOSYU the connector looks longer than standard USB so perhaps it would work. I can't say for certain of course. I also saw used Nook Tablet power adapater/cable sets on amazon as well (original OEM). And a final suggestion would be to get one from ebay. I have seen a few there as well.
I am surprised B&N won't ship the cable at all. Seems like they would want to sell/move them. I was looking at them the other day and you can see how the V2 is from the photo. The connector on the nook side is not long and easy to snap off/apply stress to like the original. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/nook-color-new-cable/27359237?ean=9780594459453
If anyone ever gets the KS cable, please post so we know it works for sure. It looks like it will, and I may even contact them to see. I think the biggest problem with the original nook color/tablet cables was the nook connector was too long/straight and easy for people to break (that and the connector wasn't reinforced like it should have been).
@skepticmisfit
I see some sellers from china who can ship the cable to my local address. I'll see if I can get a good one.
Also, keeping the cable connected to the laptop's USB 3.0 port is useful. :good::good::good:

No. It seems i don't need a nook's stupid cable at all. The tablet gets charged on usb 2.0 port too. I am using the CM11 nightilies ROM and gapps minimal, that is efficient in terms of battery usage.

Does it fast charge? I thought the NT would only fast charge if you use the B&N cable? Or is the fast charging lock to their cable only work with the stock ROM?

You don't really need a replacement Nook charger, any 5V 2A USB wall-charger plug and a regular micro-USB cable would do although it would take a bit longer to charge.
While Digi is right, there are official Nook cables and chargers (refurbished) on ebay at the moment. You can still get the cables from Barnes and Noble but I don't know if they will ship to India or not. I would try searching for "nook tablet" on ebay.
Also if you are going the generic charger/cable route, be sure to have the screen and wifi off while charging. If you have the screen on, it will discharge faster than you can charge it.
One final note, even if you are going to get a official charger (which I would recommend as it is so much faster) it would be wise to plug it in to a generic cable/charger combo for now. It is NEVER good to leave the Nook laying around with a dead battery. It will kill the battery in short order. And it is harder to get a Nook Tablet going again with a generic charger if the battery gets too low (shuts down on you).

Magnetic usb cable

Hey guys!
I was thinking about geting a magnetic cable for my OP5, they seem greate for beeyng very practical to use and in theory helping to expand the device's usb port life.
So with that in mind, does anyone have any ideia if...
1- Is there a 4A magnetic usb C cable compatible with dash/vooc?
and
2 - is there any chance that using a magnetic cable would cause damage to the phone?
Nope no dash charge just slow/about 1A. Don't think slow charging would kill your phone. I use em all the time and have had no problems this far.
Same here, I have a micro-usb magnetic connector for my smartach and another magnetic type-c for a tablet and both can't deliver more than 1A , but they are indeed very handy !
Hey guys just found a 4.3A cable, the problem is that its made for notebooks which means the connector is L shaped.

Only problem i see is that the USB C charge part needs to stay in the phone, and the other part is magnetic.

That's kind of the whole idea that makes it convenient, not having to plug the cable. But yeah you do have to always use a case to cover it.

Ok the Charger i get but the cable, are you sure?
Is there something else about the OP stock cable besisdes the amount of juice that it can put thru? (considering that that ports a usb-c on one end and usb on the other)
I always thought that there wasn't any other cable compatible because before apple put a usb-c charging/data port on macbook there was no market for a 4A cable apart from Oppo and Oneplus.

Yes I'm sure, there is a ton of sites that explains Dash Charge. I Think they put some microchip inside so OP phones can check the compatibility and allow the 4A charge
Edit: There is some article that states that you need their cable

Quoting the part of the article that talks about the cable "they won’t be compatible with the high current that’s supplied to the device".
So if the current is the only reason... than i believe it could be compatible sense it hits the 4A spot.
Compatible or not the seller/manufaturer will only ship the cable once it hits 200 pcs sold mark, which is pretty far from the current 42 pre-orders. That's too bad i was actualy willing to buy and test it if it wasn't for this.
Any news regarding this?

Question about the USB C port - S9+

hi guys
when i plug in the charging cable to my s9+, the cable can go a bit up and down inside the port
is it the same on your devices? is this normal? if yes, how much movement is considered acceptable? my phone is charging normally and the movement doesn't seem to affect it in any way
i mean, it cannot fit super-tight and not move at all, right?
there isn't any dirt/lint inside the port since the phone is only one month old
any reply is appreciated!
Same here. But sometimes the phone would not detect the cable. However, I'm using cheap Chinese cables. Worst case scenario, at least we have wireless charging

why aren't you using the cable that came with the phone? did it break or something? is it working normally when you use the original cable?
how much of a force is needed to make the usb port wiggle when you drop it while plugged in?
