[Q] Questions about Root, Safestrap & Gapps for the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hey,
I am about to get a new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 64gb tomorrow and I'm already checking how to root the tablet and get all the Gapps up and running.
Unfortunately there are still a few things which are a little bit confusing for me at the moment:
1. Which is the best way to make sure that the Kindle Fire does not install an OTA update on its own? I mean it can not be the solution to keep the tablet in airplane mode all the time, that is ridiculous! I read about several ways to block OTA updates, installing a firewall, changing a value in the build.prop or renaming a certain file in den /system/ folder. Which way has to be proven to be the best way?
2. After gaining root I will install Safestrap and flash the official Amazon Rom to a slot. Is there a size for the Rom partition which is recommended? I have seen Safestrap now supports up to 16gb.
3. After booting the Amazon Rom from a Safestrap slot, can you do an OTA update or will this affect the whole system?
4. Can someone please point me to the correct and latest version Gapps for the 8.9" model (Apollo)?
I'm pretty sure I will come up with more questions tomorrow, but that's for now!
Thanks for your help ...

Once you complete the process to make dual-system (both Gapps and Amazon) the HDXposed module will block updates.

Personally, 6GB or 8GB. I currently use 4GB and it got a LITTLE crampy when I downloaded a couple videos from Coursera.

It seems to be known the Xposed mod doesn't block updates. If you want the tab for the specs but also as close as possible to a stock android experience. I would recommend how I did it with SS on both stock and rom slot, airplane moding the stock slot and never going back there unless necessary. Also try to rename the files and if possible try to mod the build if you think fit.
Just my 0.02.

I was pointing you to dual-use setup. If you don't want Amazon, it'd be this one:

Thanks for all the help! After some back and forth I now have the most things working and it's a great device, but I still have one questions. Does Google+ work for anyone of you? As soon as I open the Google+ app it crashes immediately and goes back to the launcher. Did anyone have similar experience and knows how to fix that?
Thanks!

I can tell you that 4.3.1.63038142 works fine for me, on current HDX 7, older ROM, HDXposed and gapps and all the rest.

Same as kschang with same version of Google+ (latest version). HDX 7 with 13.3.1.0 firmware. It's run fine with Cpasjuste's ROMs (both the Thor Gapps and the AOSP ROMs) as well as stock ROM with Cpastjuste's Gapps zip installer.

Hi
I've also got HDX 8.9 14.3.1.0 Apollo. How did you get supersu installed?
I've got the UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99r4.zip
The author recommends installing through Google Play.
But if I turn off airplane mode I'll get updated, so I can't do that.
Other option is to install supersu through CWM, TWRP or MobilOdin.
But they also require Google Play to install.
I'm on linux. What should I do?

I mean Christ the best I can find is this: http://blog.julianxhokaxhiu.com/entry/how-to-install-supersu-on-hamlet-zelig-pad-210g
But he's got a custom install script. There's no install.sh file in the zip I got.
Some old threads look promising (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410223) but will BurritoRoot or whatever worked on Kindle Fire 2 years ago work for Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 Apollo???
If you got all this working, it would be great if you could just unpack all the instructions you went through. No links and trying to be timeless lillypads for the future, just a detailed case study.

I got VBox to see the Kindle and just used the KFHDX ToolKit v0.91 toolkit.

Proscan plt4311-pl Rooting

I need help rooting this tablet. The Proscan plt4311-pl is a small tablet running Android 4.0. I have tried OneClickRoot and SuperOneClick, neither worked. I am new to this but I would love to have full control over my tablet and install a custom ROM. Can someone please help me and put it in terms that a newbie can understand!
root proscan plt4311
This is a MIPS based tablet. (Actions 7013 based). Most apps and binaries are made for ARM. That is why the tools you mentioned didn't work. I think there is a list keeping track of what apps work and/or have been ported over at the Ainol Novo 7 basic threads.
I managed to get root access, but there's many steps involved, and honestly I'm gonna have to go back and figure exactly what I did after I get some rest but below are the tools&links and some basic instructions.
******OOps, guess I can't post links as a new user. type freetexthost.com/xvfjzr1ltq into your browser for my notes on rooting the Proscan Plt4311*********
******Edit #2: I soft bricked it trying to install ICS gapps. I re-flashed the firmware and rooted the tablet again, much quicker this time. And I managed to get play store and some other apps going. I should have a ready made script after work tommorow for you and all the other Big Lots bargain shoppers who bought this tablet (I got mine for $40!)

Just got mine on sale for $17.99 on Newegg Flash, came in the mail today. It's still doing the first charge on my 3A, shouldn't take long (no devil emote?) Can't wait to see what you devs can do for this thing! Although it is MIPS I'm sure simple apps and roms will run fine, but ARM is still preferable. But hey, it was $18. What do you expect?

I use the term "devs" very loosely here. Basically anyone willing to work on it. The first thing I'm gonna do is try to get into Recovery, and from there you could theoretically root it, install Gapps, etc.
Any updates?

Still no luck here with rooting, all I got so far was the Google Apps package in.
You can root with:
POOT: This app is a one click root app. No computer needed
Framaroot: Framaroot is a oneclick root app . No computer needed
This is the most popular one!
Z4Root: Z4Root is an oneclick root app . No computer needed
Towelroot: Towelroot is an oneclick root app. No computer needed
Baidu: No information
Vroot: No information
Gingerbreak: This app can root almost all gingerbread devices

I'm very curious about this as well. Picked up a HDX and it's running Fire OS 4.5.1. I tried one approach I found online but it was from Jan so it may not apply to Fire OS 4.5.1.
I have heard people ask Amazon to roll back their HDX to a V3.x version. Do you think this would allow me to root the HDX 7" 3rd gen? My goal is to install CyanogenMod or some other rom on my HDX.
I just bought 2x THOR devices from AMAZON (16Gb and 64GB) both had an very old build from last year. perfectly rootable.
What build version do you have? Mine has 4.5.1 which apparently is not rootable. What root method did you use (towelroot?)?

I am a Linux user and have a rooted Nexus 5 but this damned thing has me confused for some reason.
Just so I am clear. There is no way to sideload apk's without being rooted. Is that correct? All I really want to do is install Bubble so that I can connect to my media server. DLNA clients in the app store either don't work or won't play FLAC. Ugh!

You can still sideload APKs through ADB or a file manager. You just need to enable apps from unknown sources in the settings.

Maybe it's me (I said I was confused). How can I side load when the file system is mounted read only? Only root can remount. /data/app and /system/app are both locked. (Fire OS 4.5.2).
@eyeconic
In short:
You need no Root for installing a transfered .apk
Maybe you think, that you have to copy (adb push?) an installed App from Device1 to Device2?
You are transfering an .apk(!) to your KF. Not to System! Just copy to SD/Internal. Use a Filemanager, click the transfered .apk and Installer is starting doing his work, e.g. creating /data/app/FILE_DIRECTORY and much more. Do you need Root for this? No, just tick the right Option like said here before

I'm an idiot. Something about the Kindle caused temporary imbecility. Thanks and I am fully recovered.
Just as an FYI, I just bought a 64gb 4G LTE Fire HDX 7 from Amazon on 12/8/14 and it came with version 13.3.2.1. It has a build date of Feb 6, 2014. I've kept it in airplane mode so far until I can catch up reading and learn how to root it and see what direction I want to go with it.
I'm curious to see how the Fire OS works, but I don't want to risk it updating on me in the background.

I'm new to the HDX and wonder why my FireOS version (4.5.x) is so different from many users here (13.X)? Did they change their version numbers?

Padfone S root

Just splitting this out from the Padfone X root thread. Thanks to the two users I quote below. Towelroot 1 does work, just did it on my own device =)

And.............TowelRoot V1 i can confirm works with the Padfone S also. I Haven't seen any one else post about the PadFone S Root and im sure people will inevitably want to do it when more and more people get their and on it but will likely be apprehensive due to there not being much out for the S yet. ASUS PADFONE S (X?)
They keep saying online that that X and S are the exact same? Well, I have the S with dock/tablet and I beg to differ. Please excuse this, not trying to hijack this thread. There are just so few of us. atm.
So far:
ROOT: TOWELROOT TR1 works perfectly on PadFone X and S Best to have SUPERSU, BUSYBOX, & ROOT CHECKER installed before rooting for ease of use after root.
TWRP Installs easily. Use this adb shell script for ASUS PadFone S only!:
Code:
adb shell "curl 'http://datbak.com/links/padfone_s/asus_t00n_twrp_2_7_1_1.img'>/sdcard/recovery.img; su -c 'dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery' bs=4096; sync; reboot recovery;"
Run> Allow SU> Reboots as normal> ASUS boot screen> black screen (TWRP is running but has the 'blackscreen bug')>wait 60 seconds>hit start button>TWRP appears> at TWRP settings reset timeout to 30 seconds or less (if you like.) We are waiting for the TWRP 2.8 update for these units, yes, it is in the works. The X version of TWRP (this thread) did not work for me on S.
XPOSED installs normally on S. Many features in Gravity Box etc. do not function perfectly because of the ASUS overlay. Lots of modules do work though. Please test for yourself. No issues so far with OS or root as of yet.
CHROMECAST MIRROR ENABLER v6 XDA LINK CHROMECAST MIRROR ENABLER works great on S.
X users please check to see if xposed and mirror enabler work for you too. :good:
BTW: ES File Manager writes to an exFAT 64GB microSD card after root and enabling the root tool. It's super fast and it's awesome! (Nexus 5 , iPhone 6, etc? Eat my dust.)
The more I use this phone, the more I like it!

And the main reason I wanted root on this nice device is GMD Gesture Control!
I was worried about how it would handle the switching displays, so I've just been trying things out. We need to override the multitouch device detection to 'asus_dds_sis_touch', then it works (only in tablet mode). So I have gestures in tablet mode, but not in phone mode (where they're less useful in my opinion). Will report in the GMD thread and ask the author what can be done. For example, running free GMD for phone mode?

What's wrong based on the quote? Yes it will work. Until the padfone S gets the L update (has not happened yet), in which case you'd need KIngroot instead (I think, have not bothered to update myself).
Whose busybox and super su you used?
By update do you mean an upgrade to lolipop?
Towelroot only works on kitkat right? I heard that someone can use framaroot as well.

These just make it sound like it's not fully functional and has problems? As I said, I'm not very techy with these things but just this would make me afraid to use it, is there any need for concern? Is the L update on its way and will it still be possible to root again after upgrading?

Root is not the same as TWRP nor Xposed.
If you're not very 'techy' (whatever that means) why do you want to root the phone in the first place? There's almost no reason to nowadays except for those with very specific requirements. And if you're not sure what TWRP and XPOSED are then you probably aren't in that group (no offense).

No offence taken I've rooted a few phones, but I've never done it myself, I've always paid someone to do it (just some tech guy I know and he's cheap but very good). Main reason I want the padfone rooted is to be able to use adblock and to get rid of the bloatware. The padfone is for my mam and she's a complete technophobe so I want as little unnecessary apps as possible on it and maybe to replace stock apps with other apps that might be easier to use for her..
So does anyone reckon rooting would be worth it for the above or am I best just to leave it be and not mess with it for fear of running into problems down the line?

How do you downgrade to 5.0 from MM?

[Q]Magisk support for S5??

Hey all, I've been having a lot of fun playing pokemon go but recently the newest version of the game has blocked users who have rooted phones, there's a hack called magisk that will allow the root to be toggled off while the game is being played and then back on when it is not. I am having no luck installing it though.
Has anyone else tried and succeeded to run this mod?
I'm running OL1 (5.1.1), stock rom.
Thanks!

I'm running it now. Although I've read that it can be done without doing a full Factory Reset, per the instructions, I wasn't able to make it work. There's a tutorial from Android Police that explains everything and provides links to the various files needed. Google search "magisk Pokemon go". You'll see the link. It's not too complicated of a process but make sure you have everything backed up.

I also have had no luck installing it. I have a sm-g900h on marshallow 6.0.1 and I've tried 5 times on doing it, but it still won't work. I've looked for a week for different drivers and archives to do it but I can't find any that work.
I'd really like help because I'm a total newbie in this and I don't know what to do or if I'm doing something wrong.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong because all that sounded pretty much like everything else. I've tried nearly every combination of flashing files, unrooting, leaving root. When I unroot I cannot boot to the OS, I was able to play the newer version when I unrooted but I don't think I'm going to do that. Guess I'll just play the old one as long as I can before the force the update and then maybe stop playing :-/

Yeah, I considered upgrading to Marshmallow because I've seen videos of it working for an S7 edge running Marshmallow and thought that Magisk may have had better support with 6.0. I really hope I don't need to get an S7 to get the game to work while rooted...The S5 is still a much better featured phone IMHO and I'm going to use it until it doesn't work anymore because it's so rock solid.
I already solved the problem I had installing it.
Turns out I was replacing the compatible version of super su that comes in the .zip without noticing.
It was all because I didn't read the instructions provided and let TWRP install the super su before rebooting.
I just didn't let TRWP install super su and it worked like a charm.

And this is on Marshmallow or Lollipop? I'm going to try updating to MM and then trying the magisk stuff again, maybe that's the key.

Help updating custom ROM

Hi!
I have a Kindle Fire HDX 7 (Thor).
Some time ago I installed safestrap and flashed a CM 11 ROM in stock slot.
Now I want to update this ROM, but I can't find new ROMs with safestrap support.
Can I unlock bootloader, install TWRP and flash LineageOS?
Can I use this 1click tool? https://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/general/multi-platform-1-click-bootloader-t3241014
Safestrap version: 4.01 (TWRP 2.7.0.1)
ROM, not the last update. https://forum.xda-developers.com/ki...-cm-11-safestrap-20150628-unofficial-t3145547
Thank you for help!

Hey man, I'm in the same exact boat but can't get any of those steps to work, could you explain better what was done as I really need to get off from CM11 and move to something better and supported.

Happy to provide more detailed guidance (several have taken a similar leap) but will be traveling the next few days with limited XDA access. You can find everything you need in the HDX forum (several threads dedicated to the topic) or just hang tight until I return.

Sorry but now I can't remember precisely what I did.
None of the steps works? I remember that the first step (generate the unlock code) was flawless.
If even the first step doesn't work maybe you have adb drivers problem, so check the prerequisites section here https://forum.xda-developers.com/ki...r-firmware-t3463982/post70881555#post70881555
