[Q] No space in app storage, no idea why - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

My phone has been a bit flaky lately. Recently upgraded to CM 10.2, Because I lost everything before, I really don't have many apps installed, but my phone now constantly says I'm out of space. When I use DiskUsage to look at it, it shows 572 Mb in applications 1344 in System data (leaving me with barely anything). I've moved most of the apps that I can over, so I'm wondering what other troubleshooting options I have to figure out what is using my space. I'm planning on upgrading to another phone before long but was hoping to make this one last another month or two. Just odd since prior to this I had it loaded up with apps and never ran into this. is CM10.2 that much bigger than 9 and that is causing my problem?

So in case anyone was interested. I found out my problem (found out others having issues on a CM forum). My \data\log directory had several hundred megs of logs in it. Once cleared, I had nearly 500 megs free. Just something to keep an eye out for. I know it won't permanently fix whatever the issue is, but at least my phone is up and working again.

Sims 3 heap error

Well I've actually been playing sims3... pretty fun time killer actually. I keep getting heap errors... maybe it has something to do with the game thinking it has 512mb to use but android only making 256mb available?
Anyone else? Any fixes (besides rooting and changing the memory available)
(I'll do some cross referencing of posts here)

After reading that it seems like I should mention I don't have the directory hack (nor do I have my phone rooted). I'm pretty far into the game too, doesn't usually happen unless something memory intensive in the game happens.
Copied down the error from the last time it happened too. Not a typo, the first number is always less than the second:
Heap 2 out of memory. Allocating 652 bytes but only 1000 available (500 LFB). Increase icf setting [s3e] MemSize2 (current value is 5000000).
I think this may be your issue, also...
Sims 3 install error "Couldn't clear application caches"
Edit: Sorry, didn't see your update until after I posted. We were a couple minutes off of each other.
I am having the exact same issues and can't resolve. please help
Same problem here. It started happening a lot when I upgraded my house. I think its too much memory for the device, or at least it thinks so. Hope this gets fixed.

This is happening to me now right after the 2nd house upgrade while trying to rearrange my kitchen. Anybody got a fix? This version of the game is supposed to be optimized from the vibrant LOL

I had some issue's prior to the hack to make my phone faster with buying mode crashing, but now with the speed hack it happens just in normal game play, hope a new hack comes out that dosnt use so much memory up in the process.
Okay, not much of a "fix" but here's what I did to get around it.
I had been getting the error everytime I tried to fix my fridge or cook a meal. I had the second house upgrade and had been working on my gardening skills.
I uprooted my whole garden and haven't had the issue since. I don't know if it was specifically related to the garden, or was just enough to bring me below the threshold of too much stuff in the house.
YMMV. Good luck!

I tried this and uprooted my entire garden and then proceeded to move and buy furniture and have not had the heap error since, not much testing, but i moved everything in my house and bought some new stuff, and no error. I could never get through moving 2 things, or buying 2 things or one of each without the error, now just did about 50 in a row and no issues!!! Garden eats up too much memory I guess. Great find. I hope they fix this in the next update.

Have I reached the S2's limits?

I have around a strange persistant problem.
I have around 250MB of internal app storage space left and used about 650Mb of storage of apps on my external 32Gb SDHC card.
I am using autostarts and task manager to manage the start up of apps and stop things running which works really well at prolonging battery life to the point where I reach a good 14 hours with heavy use on battery (I have five e-mail accounts pushed all sorts of widgets and use the phone fairly heavily on an average day, admittedly I get a little less if I use multimedia to any extent) I am using a stock 2.3.5 build from which I have removed some bloat stuff so I have about 35MB of rom storage left. It's rooted and has CWM installed etc.
In total I have something approaching 650 app elements in Titanium Backup depending on what I do or dont have installed at any given point.
Without the SD card the phone boots fine everytime. With the SD card in depending on the amount of .asec files in the .android secure folder the phone will often boot up and then during the processes after boot semi crash. By this I mean it will boot up then about 2-5minutes during the afterboot it will stop working and drop in a loop where it is still trying to run after boot process like scanning for media and stuff but loses connection with the carrier and then loops. Removing the sdhc card and moving some of the .asec files out of the the .androidsecure folder usually fixes this. It does not come up with safe mode or anything like that.
Has anyone else experienced this? Have I simply reached the limits of what the phone can do? My guess is that the problem lies with the process of copying/unpacking the .asec files into the /mnt/asec structure?
Can anyone offer any useful advice the 32Gb SDHC card is only class 2 (all that was available when I got it) I am thinking a faster one MIGHT solve the issue but that seems only a possibility and investing in a new card simply to find out it doesnt fix the issue would be a relatively expensive mistake. Has anyone else found similar limits?
You realise that's intimidatingly long to read right? Please write in shorter forms.

Not exactly helpful... Its far better to have a decent descriptive long post than people who writes "I have tons of apps but I get problem with connection".
@op I also have a tons of apps, fairly close to the amount you have, but still have quite a bit of space left, do you make a lot of backups and such? Check your SD card, because I remember a post here saying that deleting files within the lost folder can save space. (some people lost GBs, some just a few MBs) Best if someone here can confirm its safe to delete the files within though.
A known problem with some phones is 32GB cards some work well others dont some phones play up others dont .64GB even worse .

Hmmmm seems like you are stressing the filesystem's/IO scheduler's timeout limit to the max with a class 2 card.
I would recommend you doing two things:
a) You have your phone rooted, try installing SiyahKernel, Voltage Control and change the I/O schedulers - thru set on boot -> init.d script (try alternating between noop, sio, bfq and VR), if that still doesn't help, try adding Thunderbolt Scripts as well - especially the remount script via script manager (links in my sig).
b) Try a different rom perhaps? Stock ROMs are not the most optimized things under the sun in terms of SGS2... back up your media to your PC, do a nandroid/titanium backup to your external sdcard and try flashing another rom. If it doesn't work, you can always restore the nandroid.
Hope it helped somewhat ^^
Thanks for the advice guys, think I might see if I cant test a faster card off a mate see if that helps.
Otherwise I will try that syrah kernel and scripts, not too keen to go for custom roms my experience of them with the galaxy s was they all seemed to have a major bug that I couldn't live with I always ened up back on stock with mods. Haven't really tested any on the s2 but if I were to I would need to be very stable with very few bugs. I also kind of like some of the samsung stuff? for example I'm using a hack versions (fragg0rs) of TW4 with it I can run the buddies now widgit from the original galaxy s and I love that. nearest thing I can find to the carosel I used to get on the samsung omnia i8910 (great phone badly let down by symbian)
To the guy that criticised the length of the original post on top of what else that has already been said, do you have the first clue about troubleshooting? especially an issue that is not referenced anywhere else? The golden rule is the more information the better. This is an issue I have been working around now for several months, I have been searching for similar (on and off not obsessively) issues posted anywhere and found nothing that helps but thanks for your rather pointless input stick to helping with the noob posts eh?
This is known problem. I have this problem too.
Several threads already talked about this since long time ago.
Here are some of threads exactly describing same problem with OP:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285844
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102920
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1328191
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446961
That last one is the thread I created last month and still active until now.
So here is the summary:
- This problem is side effect since ROM version 2.3.5.
- Version 2.3.4 and earlier does not have this problem.
- This problem still exists in ICS LPB leak
- It seems that Samsung does not know about this problem.
The only workaround solution:
- Downgrade to version 2.3.4 or below
For us who have this problem, please add your post to the thread I created above (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446961) and rate high to keep the thread alive so it will get attention from many users and hopefully from Samsung.
you just saved me money buying a new card thanks for that.

[Q] Space issue

I keep running out of space on my 2 gig partition every few days and I keep resetting to the factory settings on the phone. I have most of my applications off that 2 gig partition. What is weird is that when it shows the breakdown of storage usage, the total is never close to 1.9 gig. Right now, it has apps at 200meg and cached data of 15 mb. Yet available is only at 88 MB. Its really really odd and I am not sure what is causing this.
I do have Andriod 4.2.2 and am using CM 10.1
Does anyone have any potential solutions for this?

Wrong section... Should be in Q&A.. I have recollection of viber causing some issues with some roms. Could it be that? Check your rom thread for solutions also.

2GB partition claims low on space, but not.

I gave my wife my i777 a few weeks ago after getting my new phone. I wiped it and put Cyanogen 10.1.3 Final on it for her to use.
She is having an odd issue. The 2GB partition reports "Storage space is running out". It claims only 19.62MB available, but only 590MB in use by apps, and 1.49MB by cached data. The graph for this partition shows slightly less than a third of the space being used, and the rest available. That would seem to agree with the amount being reported in use, but blatantly contradicts the amount being reported free.
Does anyone know what would cause this discrepancy of nearly 1.4GB?
When wiping the cache and davlik cache had no effect, I wiped the phone, reinstalled CM, and restored a Titanium backup. It is showing the correct amount of free space now. I'd still be interested to know what might have led to that situation, if anyone has an idea.
I'd guess a bad flash.
I am having this exact problem on the latest Omni 4.4.2 nightly rom. Can I reformat just the internal storage so re-flash isn't necessary? Everything else about the ROM is running just fine.

[Q] Phone doesn't run so great anymore

So, after 8 months of use, my M8 is finally in a situation where I'm kind of sick of it running so poorly. In the past I've always had these issues over time, but I always contributed it mainly to running custom ROM's. Well, when I got my M8, it ran so well I decided to leave it stock. Well it's finally starting to hit a wall and it's more of a frustration than a joy to use. Swype is borderline impossible to use since it lags so bad, freezes are infrequent but occur, etc etc.
So my question is, what are the most likely contributors? Apps that run in the background? Too many apps? Too much space used? I can't think of much else, since, like I said, it's still fully stock. Or is this just what I have to expect from a phone?
Do you clear the cache in your app settings. If you game a lot than I would definitely start with the game apps first.

Android 5.0.1 is pretty lag free in my opinion

I kept my phone stock for quite some time because I felt I didn't need to change anything, until last week because I was tired of radio issues. Bottom line, ATT sucks at getting updates out, so if your running stock, your firmware is like three updates back. I see a massive improvements in speed and battery with 3.28.1540.5. If you know how, I would S-OFF and upgrade firmware to that and flash the debloated custom stock Rom that comes with root and SU. There are straight forward instructions in the att m8 development thread.

I might look into this. What I don't get though.. I can understand if new updates are quicker. That makes sense. What doesn't, is how ridiculously poor my phone runs compared to the first few months I had it. It's been like this for every phone I've had. I don't game, I don't have all that many apps. In my running app list, the only self installed things there are Facebook and Swype. I have plenty of extra storage internal and on my SD. So what is it that causes such poor performance over time? I'll definitely have to check out the newer roms and finally s-off.. but I've done plenty of custom roms before with other phones and the same thing always happens, things run fine for a bit and then slowly go to crap.

Its hard to say what is causing your issue, and aside from saying Swype is lagging (might be an issue with that app itself) and the phone "doesn't run so great anymore" you really haven't provided any specifics of what the problem is. You also haven't indicated if you tried to clear cached as jball suggested, and if so, if it helped at all.
Might be some runaway (poorly coded) AT&T bloat apps. But in general, apps running in the background will not slow the system down much. There are various apps to track battery and memory usage, so you might try one of those, to determine if any particular apps are the culprit.
I can't say I've seen any lag on my M8, but I switch ROMs fairly occasionally, and keep it updated to current Android builds (thanks to s-off). Clearing up your data partition alone might help (but might now, on the other hand) so you might also consider backing up any personal data and doing a factory reset. Wiping the slate clean might solve your issue.
Ok.. well a lot info there but one step at a time. I realized my phone is Sunday unusable with Wi-Fi turned on.. which is quite interesting and I'm pretty lost on this one. With Wi-Fi on, it's like my entire phone stops, not just the actual internet speeds. Apps like Facebook take ten seconds just to load, and then the actual content takes sometimes 15 seconds to load or maybe not even at all. Also, keep in mind, my actual internet speeds are fine, and even test perfectly fine on my phone.
As soon as I turn off Wi-Fi, it seems everything on my phone I'd dramatically quicker and everything loads near immediate. I've tried restarting my phone, cycling airplane mode, not really sure what else to do.

Does it happen anywhere you use WiFi? If so maybe try fully wiping and flashing the firmware, or just bust out the ruu to make it easier, can't hurt to try it should help tho
Did you even try to wipe cache, as has been suggested twice previously?
Otherwise, if no major system changes, and the phone has just been running worse and worse, a factory reset may help; as I would have to think it may be 3rd party apps that are to blame. Backup your personal data, factory reset, and just start to install a minimum of apps, and see how it runs.
If still no improvement, the above comment to try to RUU is not a bad idea, either. RUU provides a fully "blank slate" and may solve your issue.
