[Q] A way to get around my school blocking almost everything on Wifi? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So just recently, my school re-did their whole Wifi, following this, they restricted access on almost everything, but their home website. I know you can get around this sort of thing using a VPN. However, I've tried a few VPN's and it seems they don't work because the VPN's API isn't availible? I assume this is because I'm running a custom ROM. So I was wondering, since I am running a custom ROM, is their a alternative thats possibly even better than using a VPN? I really can't just use mobile data since I've got a limit per month and its getting to that limit quickly.

There are quite a few ROMs that still support VPN connections. But honestly, you're in the same boat as most corporate employees.
What most of us do? Use mobile data, wait until we go somewhere with free wi-fi or home.

[Q] Tethering with rooted ICS phone

I have searched extensively on Google, and XDA but can't find the right answer.
I want to tether my phone. I can do this directly in Android but my current carrier brings up a message in the browser saying it's not supported on my current plan.
I'm addressing this, but in the mean time I'm curious if there is a way round it, hypothetically.
I have seen some Apps, such as ClockWork Mod Tether, but since my phone is rooted I wondered if there is a more elegant solution that doesn't involve any software to be added to my PC.
I read about using TB to freeze a specific App/Process but couldn't find any details.
Any advice would be great,
thanks

HOW have you not heard of android wifi tether? One of the first reasons I had for rooting the first Android phone I got.
There's also Barnacle Tether, available on the play store.
Guess Barnacle is gone... but there are other tethering apps on the play store though.
And I'm wrong again. Barnacle is still there, but doesn't show up when I search from my phone. How curious.
Since your phone is rooted you can download wireless tether.
Google it and you will easily find the download link or even directly via the play store.

I appreciate the reply, but if you read my post again the issue I'm having is not an app to enable wifi tether directly on the handset, it's that the packet data is being detected as not from the phone so I get a message, on the computer, in the internet browser saying my priceplan doesn't include tethering. I cant get around this 3 website redirect. So, I need a way to tether, without the network knowing... The apps you mention work when the block is at the phone level I believe.... This is something different Three is doing..
Please correct me if I'm wrong though...
Oh, and as for the apps not showing up, the mobile phone providers asked google to block these apps for certain customers.. if you connect to a wifi network when in flight mode, and go the google market, you should still be able to see them...

I WAS on wifi.
And did you ACTUALLY download the tether app and try, or were you using the tether built into the settings of Android? Because it sure doesn't sound like you downloaded the app...
And I don't have tethering on my carrier plan, but the tether app works just fine for me.

Initially when I first posted I was trying the built in app but I downloaded the app you suggested anyway, but it didn't work. would connect to the computer but no data connection. Unsure if its an app problem or still a three problem, but I don't see how this app would fix the three problem. Does it somehow mask the PC data connection??? I couldn't see anything in the settings or set up that suggest that it would, it just looks like a more feature rich wifi hotspot app?? In addition I found mention that that others with my issue have also tried these apps like barnacle and it didn;t resolve the problem....

They can suspend your service if they discover you are doing tethering on your device if you are not alowed in your current plan.
I Hope you wont have any issues.
Otherwise it is possible that the sim card lock the feature even on rooted phone when detect thetering or it is impossible ?

yes I suppose they could do, but like I say I'm resolving this with my contract. It's more that I'm curious how they are doing it, and on principle don't like being told what I can and can't do
It can't be a sim lock.
I just tried tethering a Macbook, and amazingly that worked!.. SO, It must be something to do with the Packet Headers I'm guessing.. Or they are doing some other more detailed packet sniffing... It means there is definitely a software route around it... Need a clever developer to read this thread
I guess clockworkMod Tether might work, but I want a solution without a PC install..

That doesn't make any sense. If it works with a mac book, it should work with your windows machine too. Unless your windows machine has some kind of proxy?

no proxy.. I'm as confused as you. The headers are different on a mac though, Unix based system... Need to know how 3 detect at a network level its not phone data... this difference with a mac must be a clue...

When you use thetering, you embark to the provider internet network.
for example my provider is Bell Canada and their proxy is web.wireless.bell.ca
this one is for the device internet
for the thetering one they use another configuration settings when i connect my device to the computer.
What happen is when you plug your device to the computer, a signal is sent to the provider stating you entered in thetering mode. You don't have access to thetering so your internet connection is limited to the walled garden of the provider stating you are not subscrided to the service. Thats why i think they blocked the port 80 on your device and redirect you to that page.
Now for the Macintosh story.. It is not impossible that you can connect without problem with a mac and safari. I know a lot of people emulating a handled device with the Mac and the safari browser and those peeps didnt had a thetering plan.
The differences came with the drivers installed. Mac OS one are quite different in term of functionality than windows, thats why maybe the provider is able to sniff more easily people using windows but i am not a senior programmer. I am currently taking courses to become one but for now it is only suppositions. If i am wrong feel free to correct me but I am quite sure about what i am saying and that's why you dont have issues with a mac

This sounds correct to me. I'm pretty annoyed though. Only had the contract a month, I was told I could move onto a more expensive plan within contract if I needed more allowance etc.. Phone up 3, not only do they not let you PAY MORE for a different plan, but they also don't let anyone shift onto the one plan ever, unless its a new contract.. So basically **** them... so even if I want to pay extra for tethering I can't... absolute nonsense...
I had the same issue with three. I downloaded masqued crusader from play store. Activated it and then started wireless/usb tether. It worked. That was a while back tho. On a payg sim card on a galaxy s on gb. Its worth a try though.

[Q] Tethering without detection

I am very good at searching before I post questions, but I keep getting an error saying search is currently not available.
On my S3 there were ways to tether via WiFi and USB without being detected on my grandfathered in unlimited data play. Can anyone confirm that there is proven method via the LGOG. Ny phone is rooted, unlocked, custom kernel, snow rom, and various other mods.
If someone can confirm a working way of doing this, I will provide them with file hosting and subdomain on my server, with full ftp access... etc. Thanks!

Also, let me know if this is in the wrong section
I used the native tethering on SnowJB fairly heavily without issue and as far as I can tell it was never detected.
I was rooted and running various ROMs on my Samsung Infuse a few months ago, and I got an email saying they would add the tethering service to my plan if I continued to use it.
A couple years ago I had a jailbroken iPhone and tethered a lot of data and never had an issue.
I have not yet tried on the LGOG in fear of getting a $40/month service automatically added to my bill.
Sorry I don't have an answer, just sharing my experience I've encountered while tethering.

avoiding detection would probably mean using a method that doesn't rewrite the TTL's on the outbound packets. I've used wifi-tether w/o issue as have many others, I'm sure. I suspect that wifi-tether doesn't preserve the TTL's, but people get away with it because the cost/benefit to carriers is to pick the top 1% of bandwidth users and examine their usage for good reason to stop them somehow, illegal tethering being a good convenient one.
I'm sorry I don't have a solution for you, as I've also searched for just such a thin and not found it. I am curious what others are doing for tethering on this device, though.
If used sparingly, you PROBABLY won't get caught. I used foxfi on my old phone on different occasions and never recieved any notifications about tethering.
jonasl (if you don't recognize the name, he is very good at what he does) had a post in the SnowJB thread a while back about fixing the tethering issues people were having. From what I understand of it, the tethering checks to see if AT&T customers have the entitlement to tether, but since this is a ported ROM, it isn't able to find out if you are entitled (the code doesn't exist to finish the check). His fix circumvents the check (which as he says "This will as a sideeffect also give you tethering even if you aren't paying for it").
I have implemented the fix in case I needed it, but have not had a need to tether since, so I can't vouch for it in that regard, I can say everything still works as expected.
jonasl's post
If you really want to avoid detection, you could run a socks proxy on your phone that forwards to another socks proxy on the internet. Then you need a way to use the socks proxy on your phone. On the client side it can be easy (web browsers have a socks proxy setting, and there are wrappers to socksify anything on your pc) or harder (if you're tethering a tablet or game console or something). Finally, you need a way to bring up both your wireless and mobile data connections at the same time - you could use wifi tether for this if you only need to tether wireless clients, or a more manual method if you need your phone to be a regular wifi client on your network.

[Q] T-Mobile Hotspot Tethering - VPN Workaround Dead

Not sure whats going on, but my go-to way for avoiding hotspot paywalls recently stopped working.
Nothing on my side has changed. I'm still using my same personal OpenVPN server with the same config files.
I did change laptops recently, but I double checked with Wireshark, all packets coming in and out are OpenVPN packets with a few TCP packets sprinkled in there. No way you T-Mobile can tell what the packets are really for.
Has anyone else noticed this? I'm thinking T-Mobile has switched to tracking tether usage by using the phone itself to report it.
If thats the case, I could probably get around it by rooting and using a custom ROM with its own hotspot app (like CM). Right?
But meh... I'm happy with the phone as it is right now.
All the Carriers are cracking done on tethering. And I don't think switching to CM will help. I'm with you I love Sense to switch to CM
If you have the T-Mobile my account app installed it's tracking what your doing. As for tethering, I have the truly unlimited, no tether included plan, and tether with out a problem.

So if I uninstall the my account app, they cant track it?

The tracking function requires user permission, which I have not done...
You could try paying for a service that you use
That's an option or use the work around and get it for free, after all you are paying for the data. Why not use it as you please.

Unlimited Hotspot Just Stopped working

I was using an international ROM, over 100gb of data used on my 3gb hotspot, but then suddenly today I got a message pop up on my phone that I have used all 3gb of hotspot data, and I must upgrade to continue using hotspot.
I switched roms out to the infinity rom from this tmobile forums, can't even connect now.
Very frustrating right now as I am on vacation and need my hotspot to work.
Any ideas? I went through the steps to manually configure my system apks to stop tethering provision checks but the infinity rom already has those provisions enabled.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any other tmobile users experience this? About to flash back to an international rom and see if anything is fixed. Paying for hotspot data seems absurd when I already pay for unlimited data.

VPN Disconnecting

I have tried few different 3rd party vpn programs and they all yields the same result, always disconnects after 30 seconds or so, especially when data is being used.
I read that could be Verizon, phone specifics, openvpn, vpn program, and or android kitkat.
I had the issue on stock root rom and Jasmine rom.
Is there any way to fix this?
I'm using the non LG vpn. pptp. my vpn works fine on jasmine 3.0. I know it's not secure but I'm not doing any banking transactions or anything.
perhaps you could give more info as what your connecting with and connecting to, and what protocol.

I just use the default protocols and settings that comes with the app. Lets say Cyberghost vpn app. It would say connected, I open Firefox, go (any websites), in less then 30 secs it would disconnect and would try to reconnect.

Been an issue for years. It happens on almost every phone with every VPN app when using Verizon 4g. It has something to do with the way data is passed through Verizon 4g. There is some kind of firewall causing it used by Verizon. I read you can fix it by paying Verizon a buttload of cash for a static IP. Other than that, there is no fix.
And it's not like they want you using one anyway since they track what you visit on their network and sell that information.
I'm on the Jasmine ROM and even stock I used the LG VPN to connect and it works.
I can stay connected all day with no issues.

Any simple ways to bypass the security lock screen requirement?
I decided to try it and could not get it to connect with the VPN service I am using on my desktop.
VPN worked perfectly find for me on my note 2 that was on 4.3.
I know there is an issue with 4.4.2 because my note 2 on 4.4.2 didn't work either.
Anybody have anymore leads? I am aware that the stock VPN may work, but it does not have the options of the VPN apps (I need to configure each individual profile/site).
