So I just picked up the S5 and........ - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

My goodness this thing is fast. I didn't think Samsung was capable of making a phone that didn't lag but boy was I wrong. The animations are shooter smooth and more importantly fast, no more touching the screen and waiting for something to happen. The camera takes great detailed pictures and I'm loving the new toolbox feature. On the S3 and S4 I rooted, installed a custom recovery, and immediately installed an aosp based rom. However on the S5 I see absolutely no need to do so and while I did root and use TB to freeze a few apps, i will probably wait for some good TouchWiz roms before installing a recovery.

I didn't root. I'm just glad you cab disable/freeze bloatware!!

I agree it's great that we can disable the boat without root! Nice upgrade...

With the S5, Touchwiz is finally usable. I spent some time with the S5 in stores, and am now running an S5 rom on my Note, and it is greatly improved. TW on the Note 3 was a big improvement over the Note 2, but there was still a lot that I hated, like the god awful tabbed settings menu. When I get mine, the only reason I'll root is so I can use Titanium and won't lose app data. Can't wait until I can JUMP May 2nd, which coincides with my last day of classes, so I'll celebrate the end of my first year with a new phone. I'll miss the Note's size, but I'm bored of it, and need something to hold me over until the Note 4.

The layout for touchWiz is somewhat all over the place. With that being said, it's definitely a vast improvement. Like the op said stock is finally really good.

When I first got the S5 it was through AT&T and I wasn't too thrilled. And I hated that they had the phone so locked down and removed download booster. After a few days I sent it back and reactivated my old tmobile account and have never been happier. The phone is quick, the t-mobile network out here is a hell of a lot faster than AT&T in my neighborhood. first thing I did when I get it from t-mobile was root it, and just installed a new rom. Glad you like the phone, I sure love mine

An Unrooted Thunderbolt -- still a great experience?

With all of this going down recently about Rooted users being cracked upon, I want to make sure my next phone does not require root in order to improve it significantly. (Unlike my Fascinate which is a great phone, only after the developers have worked on issues).
How is the unrooted TB experience?
I didn't root my TB for about 3 days and I came from a rooted DX. It feels faster and smoother than a DX with the OE rom over clocked and is just as snappy as the blur-less rom i was running also. I was pleasantly surprised by the out of the box experienced of the TB and I am an ASOP experienced fan.
I was in no rush to root my phone. I only did it out of habit and was curious. I loved my phone when I first got it. Obviously rooting made me love it more but still a great experience. Nothing was broken or slow. Smoothest screen transition I've seen on a phone. I don't even mind HTC Sense (still prefer ASOP, but miles better than TouchWiz and Blur).
Mine is rooted and I don't think it's currently needed. The ROMs that are currently out aren't the coolest (meaning bug free and full featured) IMO. I did it for the freedom when a really good ROM/kernel is out.

I agree, even the gingerbread Blur isn't as good as this. I my self noticed that the Bloated up OEM rom was just as fast for me as the De-bloats also

Is there a "crack down"??? Seems to be business as usual.
To me....ThunderBolt is a beast with or without root. I ran it for a week before I rooted it and I though everything I had it and could NOT make it stall.
Tip of the hat to HTC and Verizon (for LTE) for this device in my hands. Best Android experience I have EVER had... I have had them ALL!!

Yeah the new snapdragon is smooth as silk. Gameing isnt bad eather. Htc phones always seem the most stable!
I agree with everyone above. I came from a DX overclocked @ 1.36ghz and this thing immediately felt faster than my X. I rooted it because I wanted to be ready for the Rubix releases since that's what I was running on the X. Can't say I'm disappointed at all in that decision. Rooted or unrooted the thing is still a beast. The extra 256 megs of ram over the X and the next Gen snapdragon really make the difference. And a decent gpu doesn't hurt the mix either.

The thunderbolt is a great phone un rooted. Faster than a stock Droid x and a tad faster than an oc'd and rom'd dx.
I rooted my thunderbolt because its mine and I hate clutter.
If Verizon would not pack the phones full of junk I probably wouldn't root.
The HTC skins allow the user to get their themes. The launchers give you the feel. The bolt is a good stock phone.
I like plain and simple, functional fast and stable is the best reason to root.
I tan rubix on my dx and running drod and b16 boLTEd now.

Thunderbolt being my first Android phone, I have nothing to compare it to. It kicked ass the day I got it, and it kicks even more ass rooted.
I really don't think there is a critical need to root. I really cant tell the difference between the two in speed except maybe in quadrant scores. Unrooted phone is very fast and smooth.

Root is different than flashing a ROM... There are no rules against rooting, those companies are just trying to stop non-approved software on their networks (even though those rumors are just that, rumors).
Root and freezing apps can't be tracked anyway....

So what's the overall verdict from those of you who are OBJECTIVE about your Thunderbolts? I.E., don't tell me about the personal preference things you like or dislike but overall thoughts on the device itself.
I'm currently using a Galaxy S (Vibrant) that I've had from it's original release date. Other than the crap GPS, I love the device. However, with AT&T's impending takeover of T-Mobile, staying simply isn't an option. Sprint has limited coverage (I travel quite a bit) so that makes Verizon my default option. I don't mind Verizon, and I've had a non-contract MiFi for over a year, it's just price that always pushed me away. Anyway, being a current customer with my MiFi I'm always getting those random spam mail offers via snail mail and the most recent is get a Thunderbolt $249 and unlimited mobile hotspot through May 15th.
I wasn't considering the Thunderbolt until seeing "Unlimited Mobile Hotspot". I currently use close to all 5GB's on my MiFi monthly along with another 3-4 on my Vibrant so data is a HUGE deal to me. I basically have a mobile office so I can eat up some data. Personally, I was holding out for a Dual Core with 768+ MB's of RAM but this definitely entices me. I don't live in an area with LTE, but it's coming, and with the future of mobile data pricing being unknown, I find myself wondering if I should "lock in" prices/features before the market becomes flooded with LTE devices.
Thoughts? Opinions?
My biggest beefs with my Vibrant are:
GPS
Battery Life (SAMOLED makes up for it and I can get 2 days out of a charge if I need to). I view most battery life issues as non-issues. People find themselves with a combo of bloatware and using crap apps that suck the life out of their phones
Lag, even on custom ROM's from time to time
No Camera Flash
How's the speaker phone?
How's Bluetooth strength? Can you stick the TBolt in your pocket and have a conversation without your headset crackling?
More importantly, how accurate is the GPS?

Not very happy with my s4

After a few days of playing with my S4 I would have to say I'm not very happy with it. My smart stay setting don't work but maybe a 1/4 of the time if that. My voice commands don't work but half the time and I get a bit of lag from time to time. I've always used the stock browser in the past cause of flash player and now that don't work right, along with every now and then not being able to click links like its lagging but yet the url, bookmarks, Window manager, and menu button work. Plus the battery life hasn't been to great but that may be me being used to the note 2 battery. If anyone else is getting the same thing or knows of fixes please let me know. I have had these problems on fully stock, rooted with stock debloated, and now on rooted stock. Should I just wait and see what roms come out or should I try to return it and if I should return it is there a way back to non rooted fully stock? Thank you for your time.
edit 5/30: i just got done formating the int and ext storage to start from scratch. after that i noticed hyperdrive was just released so i installed that. phone softbricked cause i tried to install the ads mod from the app he has on the rom. was getting missing file errors and i/o error when tring to restore/wipe/install anything. did the no-wipe factory image and had to wipe data and factory reset after to get it out of bootloop. now im back and phone seems to be running great (but not sure about the voice commands and smart screen stuff just yet). i think my problem was i didnt change the save folder for titanium backup to sd card and i had some rom backups in the int. storage. figured this out when i went to make a backup and it said not enough memory. so if your having problems with lag double check your int. storage to make sure you have plenty of space.
Sounds like every S 4 I have ever seen.

Thanks for the heads up! I ran it on my note 2 and loved it. Can't freaking wait!
Glad I brightened things up a bit for you!! Heck I am looking to upgrade soon and am considering the gs4. Been testing the waters in anticipation. I ran one of scotts roms years ago on my Optimus S (moved to the nexus s 4g, to currently the epic 4g touch) and he made a solid rom then, I know that.
I came from a note 2 as well. I can't wait for custom roms. The stock rom Sucks. I miss clean rom and beanstown but I'm sure everything will be here soon because the S series devices always have more development because they're more popular and more of an everyone phone unlike the note which isn't for everyone.

the issue with links you cant click is an bug browser freezing up.hopefully they will fix it soon.temp u can clise tge broswer and then fire back up and it should work.
I wonder in Verizon applied the latest update like all the other carruers did that took care of lag etc...I remember something in early may that the other carriers were getting an update to address the lag issue and since our phones were just released last week...it may be a little bit before Verizon catches up.

The Galaxy S3 was the first android phone that I could say finally solved the laggyness that has been there since the droid. I have an iphone 5, S3, and the S4. The S4, at least mine, is clearly faster then my S3, and the even the iphone (which has always been pinnacle of non lag phones)......can't even compare with the S4 smoothness, and that is saying something.
I hate lag, hated it since the OGDroid, and can see immediately. I'm sorry you're having issues with you're S4, but I really don't know what alternative phone you could buy as of now.....because, if i'm not mistaking, the S4,HTC One or Iphone.....are the only phones you can buy with the least amount of lag as of todays date.
Best of luck to you.
Well I need to do some more testing with the voice command. I went outside today (were is bright) and noticed that some of the clear stickers on the side of the phone were still there. Just not to sure if the ones I pulled off was covering the mic. If it's better from here on out I will definitely feel like a de de deee.
edit: still having a little of trouble but it may have to do with background noises and the phone volume being all the way up.
Tks

I kept reading posts about the S4 being laggy, so I was a little worried when I picked mine up yesterday. Luckily, I seem to have a lag free version.
I came from an iPhone 5, and this S4 is much faster. Prior to that I had a gnex, and there is night and day difference between that and the S4.

I'm coming from two "less-than-flagship" phones, the Droid Eris and Droid Incredible 2. Both had shortcomings in the performance department, and were completely neglected for updates (DINC2 is still on Gingerbread.) My main reasons for rooting were:
1. Latest Android features and versions
2. Better performance
3. Removing Verizon apps that I didn't want (NFL mobile, Verizon apps, etc.)
4. Amazing customization opportunity and a variety of rom types to try (AOSP, PA, AOKP, MIUI, etc.)
For the S4 in the week I've owned it, I can cross 1 off the list for sure. Right now this phone is running the latest and greatest version of Android. So upgrading for a newer version is not possible.
Performance would, unfortunately, improve with a custom rom. I say unfortunately because it should be really hard to code a launcher that makes this beast lag. But I've definitely noticed some delay/stuttering while stock. Obviously this thing is lightyears faster than both of my prior smartphones.
Removing apps I don't want and further customizing the phone is a big lure, though. I think I will ultimately root, but I'm waiting to see how the roms and mods evolve. I have to hand it to our devs, though. This thing is attracting a TON of action, and I have no doubts we'll see some great roms.
I hope my experience helps a bit, though it was a bit long.
I rooted for one reason. That being said it was a pretty big reason (for me) and all the other options didn't hurt in making the decision.
The biggest problem I had with the phone was that you are limited to using only certain apps if you want to run multiple apps on the screen at the same time. As far as I know the only way around this is to root it.
If you decide to root don't attempt it 10min before you need to leave for work like I did. I suppose if you've done it before you could run through the process pretty quickly but the first time requires some patient attention to detail and time enough to trouble-shoot unexpected problems. I had to go a day without my phone till I had time to correct my mistakes.
I would do it. I did last night and it was very simple with the all in one tool. If you aren't into crazy modding, theming, and such, im sure there will be several roms that will be directed towards people that want as close to stock as possible without all the bloat and better performance/battery life.

S4 lag?

Just got the s4 yesterday. I'm experiencing some lag issues with the gallery and mostly the text message app and sometimes other areas of the phone. When I click the text app it opens then if I click to open up one of the convos that's when I notice a big delay. It's like a 1 second delay. This is basically instant on my note 2. Is this a software problem that will hopefully be fixed soon or a hardware problem? Anyone else notice this? That text delay when you open up a convo.. Also SwiftKey seems to lag sometimes.

Try Handcent SMS or Handcent Pro Beta for texting. Much faster. If you use any 3rd party texting program remember to go to your installed applications and click on All and then disable Messaging which is the default messaging application. This way you don't get double notifications. Then drag the icon to your bottom bar and lock screen if applicable.
Ok I got chomp sms. It seems to be the fastest. Why do you think weather bug radar runs better on my note 2 than my s4? The s4 is so much more powerful it seems like everything should be faster and smoother.

no matter what, you can always rearrange your home screen again to make it look how you want...
follow the steps listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798
that will root the phone. make sure you install a custom recovery like twrp or cwm, and make a backup. then, download titanium backup pro (it is like $6.99), and go in and freeze the apps you don't feel you need. make sure you do your research first as to what apps you are freezing, there are lists of bloatware posted all over the site. that will debloat your phone for the most part. after that, you can start to flash custom rom's with different tweaks built in. cleanrom is really nice, as is hyperdrive.

Perfect timing then. As everyone says, you've got to clean the bloat but it has to be loosened first so heat up a kettle of water and let the water vapor soak into the phone. Once that's done the real clean begins. Just as any bacteria or virus it's got to be nuked to kill it, so stick it in the microwave on high (not "hi") for 2 minutes. if you smell somethiny funky that means all is well and an extra minue or two wont hurt.
Lastly, the dead bloatware has to be extricated from the phone so use a small screwdriver to lift a corner of the glass and then shake out the dead bloatware.. Now its time to root so get a shovel and Miraclegrow ready.

hi all,, im a noob i know,,, ive had rooted S3 for a year now, love it! got a new S4 few days ago,, rooted it,, deleted all s-bloatware, deleted all verizon bloat,, turned off all animations, and phone is still super laggy when waking up phone/doing anything,, old S3 runs circles around this S4,, called samsung today & they were no help at all,,called verizon,, they said they're pushing out a update in the next few "days" not weeks to fix an error message peeps are getting and also for the lag but more for the error is what i got from the convo,,-------- ANYWAYS my ACTUAL point of posting here is that i have noticed that every time i open the CAMERA or Camcorder on the S4 no matter if i take a picture/video or close the app right away it automatically turns on the Transition Animation Scale to 1x!!!! i would love to know if this happens to everyone and maybe they just haven't noticed lol,, also noticed that the S4 doesn't lag as much when its plugged in being charged not matter if battery is 100% or 5% but unplug phone and it adds more lag,, DO I JUST HAVE A DEFECT or what? if these things dont hold true on your S4 then i can just have them send me another one,, Or hopefully this update maybe called 4.3.1 for verizon will fix all this in the next few days,, thanks for reading

The 1x transition from the camera bug is well known but I'm not sure if they pushed an update to fix that or not. I have heard that they did push an update to fix the security notification bug, so if you still have it I would try to do the 4.3 update again to fix it (you will lose root and have to do that again though). Touchwiz is by nature pretty laggy but what you're describing is not normal... I would do a factory reset and see if that helps. On mine I have bloat frozen, greenify, etc and it runs fairly smooth. Not buttery, but smoother than what you're saying.
Yeah i've done factory resets and used the verizon repair tool which unroots and puts all bloat back a few time to.. still the same lag.. I did all the exact same thing on my old s3 and my s4 is just way slower.. and I'm sorry I couldn't find anything on the 1x camera thing so thanks for helping.. I do still wonder if the 1x thing is on all carries and models or just on random ones?

Is it just me or...

are these newer android phones giving more reasons to stay stock? I have found with the G2 that I have no want (or need) right now to root/ROM this phone. Usually when I get a new phone the first thing I do is root it, clear all that carrier crap out, or simply flash CM for that stock android experience; I just have not found that need with the G2.
So, what is the point of this thread?
I want to know everyone's thoughts about this. Are you rooted...are you stock....and why you are or are not?
If you are rooted, I would also like to know what ROM/Kernel/etc you are running.
Thanks!
I am rooted but on stock everything else.
I mainly rooted for Titanium Backup and other root enabled apps like AdBlock and Greenify. Beyond that, stock is sufficient for me.
Stock unrooted. Since greenify is avaliable without root I kinda found no real reason to root. The only thing I really want is the dual window option from LG g flex. Maybe also to try out dorimanx kernel for undervolting and messing around a bit.

The main reason I usually root/rom is for speed and battery life....as we all know the G2 doesnt lack anything in either. I use the greenify beta as well and have noticed a huge difference in my battery life. The only thing tempting me to root is Titanium Backup but I have been fighting it because I'm so damn happy with the phone as it sits.

Link for adblock? Or at least point me in right direction
Root + Flex rom + Custom kernel
Why?
I like stock rom (UI and feature) but flex rom is better (Black UI + more feature)
I'm rooted and stock. Stock rocks. I'm also running g2 xposed. With this you have all the customizations on aosp but on stock Rom

if there was a Flex rom for the Sprint variant, I would probably reconsider. Althoughhhh I am running the LG Flex theme thru LG's theme manager which gives me a somewhat similar look to the Flex.
I like the stock ROM with xposed, but now I'm on AOSP, because micro stuttering on stock started to bug me, even if it was barely noticeable.
thoughts....
Flashing is so played out for me. A new feature gets added and something else breaks and needs to be fixed...repeat.
.....At this point just root and do your own thing(s).
But I have not did anything to this phone, it works just fine.
I'm stuck but rooted with a few xposed modules, adblock and of course the camera mod. Now it's perfect! Never been this happy with a device. I played with AOSP kk and that was fun for awhile. I came from a gnex previously, which I loved despite the shortcomings.

I have 3x VS980s. Two are happy with being 100% stock.
I rooted mine from day1, but stayed with stock-based ROM for a month as I was happy with stockLG (I can satisfy my flashing urges with
my N7) ... Then I decided to explore the latest/greatest of Android on this phone... I would never go back to stock and don't even care when/if LG
would release a stock 4.4.x (OK, maybe we need the new OEM kernel source).
ROM+gapps are normally ~200MB instead of a huge download.
I get to try so many features out .. I can switch to other ROM (or even my Stock) Backups in a few minutes, if my mood changes.
Not that I fully need those features ... just the feeling of doing things freely.
I'm currently staying with Mahdi ... lean, fast, so-many-features, no issues (I had some freezes/reboots on early releases, still no biggies then).
DirtyUnicorns is great too, but may need some little time to smooth out the little bugs
Played around like 3 days with roms, i turned into a flashaholic, flex, non flex, tried so many roms and at the end of this, im on stock rooted now. i bought G2 Xposed (0,70 € - definitely worth!) and now it looks cool, its fast, stable, what else do i need? Darker UI? For what exactly? I actually using apps and not the starving at the settings and think "wow cool, its dark". no need, really. im pretty happy currently with full stock rooted. the next days i will customize my homescreen a bit and then its ready. just wait for 4.4
YOLO
Stock, rooted, debloated, xposed to get rid of GPS and dual wifi/lte notifications.
I'm coming from the HTC Rezound. I usually go for CM, but am very impressed with the LG interface. I have been tempted to try a flex Rom, but am happy having a phone that everything works, and has amazing battery life.

After flashing my Galaxy Nexus several times a week, and sometimes a few times in a day, for two years, I fully expected that I'd be doing the same with the G2. But I've been very pleasantly surprised at the speed, smoothness, features and battery life with stock. Stock has also been incredibly stable for me, No FC's, no lockups.
The stocks apps are much better than I expected -- the functionality has been excellent. I'm keeping an eye on the various sub-forums here for the G2, and may wind up flashing something new, but so far, I don't see anything more appealing than stock, and I'm not ready to give up the stock features. I may wind up with Flex, but I'm also guessing that there will be an update for the G2 sometime in the next 2 or 3 months, and my guess is that it may have some of the extra feature's we're seeing today in the Flex ROM. For now - I'm happy to remain stock, experiment with themes for the stock launcher and simply enjoy this fantastic phone. Still feels weird, as this is the first phone I've had where I'm really happy with stock.
^^Same exact situation for me,I'm loving the g2,just need to get rid of some of the bloat. But something deep inside really wants to start flashing away, but it's just too good as is, I stopped after root and recovery.

I rooted first to get rid of all the status bar icons. Overkill lol I don't need to know NFC or WiFi is on. And with xposed tweaks, its all I need. I have zero interested in an asop ROM. Using flex and love it
