[app] CM11 (sportsstar89) USB Tether - HTC Amaze 4G

Cycling through numerous apps I came to one that actually allows functionality for USB tether. Could not get the WiFi tether to function yet though WiFi alone does work. USB tether may be of no use to many, but I who have no home WiFi ( thanks to an abomination called cox) rely on it for all my laptop usage needs. The lite version has limitations so I went pro. The cost was worth it to myself who came from stock ICS now on the glorious cm11 thanks to sport. I must donate to sport for this ROM in the near future, its my permanent pal temporarily (oxymoron intended). Anticipating the camera fix, but as far as the app, look for it on the play store. USB tether app?

Just picked up the Vibrant today. Is there another USB tether app besides PDAnet for Android? Hopefully point and click.
Thanks for replying.
"Wireless tether" but your phone has to be rooted
he wants a 'usb' tether app. not a wifi/bluetooth tether app. uh the only way i know how to do it, is go into settings in cyanogenmod's cm5 or 6 and hit the little "enable usb tethering" checkmark box, but you'd have to root ur phone and put his rom on ur phone once it gets ported.
Here is an article of a couple of tethering options. All except PDAnet require root. With the exception of the rooting requirement all are pretty user friendly.

On a side note I did notice that root access tethering is faster than PDAnet so I went the rooted way instead of spending the money on PDAnet. If you want something simple get PDAnet, make sure to use the trial period to see if all your usage cases (e.g. corporate VPN) will work.
I don't have my Vibrant yet (coming Monday), but if you have rooted your phone you can use this free one.

Here is the wireless version. Pick the Eclair one since the Vibrant should be on Android 2.1. Note that I'm seeing some folks having trouble with wireless tether on the forums so check those out.

does this work for mac?
I found "easytether" on marketplace, did anybody try?
One more thing, will USB tethering application work with cradlepoint router?

I'd like a more stable rom for tethering. (I'm on Bamf 3.0/MR2)

Right now I'm on BAMF Sense 3.0 Gingerbread using MR2 radio (MR1 had no service) and every time I hook up USB and hit "Share internet with PC", I drop 3G and 4G and don't even get 1x. It's irritating.
And when I use Wifi Hotspot built in application, I get very very shaky consistency. If the screen turns off, 4G drops. After 10-15 seconds, 4G resets.
One of the primary reasons I traded my iPhone for a Thunderbolt was to bypass the need for a cable modem but I'm having no such luck.
Can anyone recommend a rom that has 100% stability with tethering? I'd prefer Wifi tethering but I'll settle for USB tethering as long as it works as well as it did on any other HTC Android phone I've used.
And yes, I've tried Barnacle and no, I do not like it.
Try Wifi Tether.

I love it and it works fantastic for me.
I just found Wireless Tether and I'm giving it a shot. Aside from tethering issues, BAMF 3.0 is a great rom so I'd hate to move away from it.
I'm surprised Verizon found a way to block Wireless Tether from Market. They sure are getting ahead in their game! So far I haven't had any drops! *knocks wood*
It's funny that some rooted app on market is better at tethering than Verizon's own hotspot feature. You'd think if they want people to pay for it, the least they can do is make their app the best for it.
I always find apps created by independent programmers seem to be the best anyway. The features of Wifi-Tether are awesome too, you can change the SSID, enable encryption, and manually enable or disable devices from connecting to your hotspot. Cant beat all that for functionality.
i use SYNERGY 3.0 latest nighty with the wireless tether app and dont' have your issues. as far as i know, this is the only GB rom that doesn't have this problem. all froyo roms worked perfectly for me. with the stock kernel it came with and mr2 radio.
WiFi Tether for the win. I used it just yesterday to DL a 500mb disc img.
CM7's USB Tethering works great for me.

+1 to that. Running BAMF 3.0 RC4 MR2.5. Using wifi tether. works great. If you cant find the wifi tether on the market, just put your phone in airplane mode and use wifi to connect then go back to market and search wifi tether for root.
I am using this version of WiFi Tether ... http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...tail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta1.apk&can=2&q=
I have found in order to get a stable connection, if you go into Settings and scroll down under the LAN option ... there will be a checkbox for Routing fix. Once I turned that on, my connection has be very stable.
Hope this works for you.

[Q] Good mods for the Evo3D to tether Chromebook

Hello XDA,
it's it's time for me to root my EVO3D.
I'm actually pretty happy with HTC's widgets and the setup I have now, but the phone is sluggish and I can't stand Sprint's apps that show up every time I upgrade.
I rooted my old phone in the past (it was an HTC hero) successfully with cyanogen, but the last time I checked this mod doesn't exist for the 3D, at least not a stable one. I liked cyanogen because it was really well balanced, slick and fast. I need something as transparent as possible. I'd also like to be able to use the 3D camera if possible, but if I have to give it up for a really good mod, I don't really mind.
The most important thing for me is tethering. I am about to get the new Chromebook and I need it to recognize the phone and tether through it. Does anyone here have any experience with it? I'm using EasyTether for now which has been really good to me, but there's no way to install it to a chromebook without some development patch which I don't think I want to apply right off the box.
So, what do you guys suggest? What is a fast Mod? I would def. need the Google App package, but I really don't need any car-related set up or apps (I live in NYC) and I don't care about radio or sports TV or any of the other Sprintcrap.

You should be able to use the Wi-Fi Tether app from the Play Store except on Sense 4.x ROM's if you are rooted, and if not you can try FoxFi in bluetooth mode (wi-fi is not supported on the Evo 3D). ClockworkMod Tether is similar to Easy Tether and doesn't require root, but again there are no drivers to support the Chromebook as a client.

Ramjet,
Which Rom would you suggest then? There are a couple of choices and I'm just not sure where to begin. Just to be clear, I don't need the phone to pick up Wi Fi, as the chromebook can do it itself; I need to be able to use the dataplan, preferably with the usb cable because it keeps the phone charged for longer periods.
Thanks!

The problem is finding the drivers for your Chromebook to use a USB tethering program. As long as your phone is rooted you can use Wi-Fi Tether with your phone connected via USB to charge, and even use it as an access point for other devices at the same time should the need arise.
Regarding the ROM, most 3.6 Sense ROM's run Wi-Fi Tether fine, but if you want to narrow it down you can be the guinea pig for our new ROM Information Thread.

Well I now rooted my phone and I'm trying to play with the wifi tether, but my chromebook won't connect. I see it under networks and it tries to connect, but can't. Any suggestions?

Stock hotspot with Sense?

So apparently verizon has somehow modified the stock hotspot mode to try and contact them first for approval, hence products like Wi-Fi tether and Open Garden. However I really dislike the interface and feel of these apps, and their widgets are ugly. I have a nice beautiful theme going on and then SPLAT, some ugly out of proportion tether widget ruining the whole look. I'd really like to be able to get the native hotspot mode functioning. Does anybody know a way to do this? Or does it just have to be hacked by the dev's somehow to get a working apk or whatever that doesnt phone home to verizon for approval?
The Hotspot app that comes in a Verizon rom, is a paid feature.
The only way to have that app functioning, is to pay Verizon for the service.
I don't think there are many if any devs, willing to hack or modify that application to be used without paying for the service.
There are many ways to tether without devs doing anything illegal or unethical.
Just thought I would point out why you won't find that app working without paying for it.
Oh I understand how it works, I just remember in the early Sense leaks that team bamf or whoever had provided a working stock hotspot that didnt phone home to verizon for permission every time. Guess they abandoned that and just let people download wifi tether and such. I just always found the stock hotspot to be infinitely better than any 3rd party app. Aside from having a cleaner interface and functioning properly with the kernel/hardware, it was MUCH faster than other aps. I could easily get 15-20mbps with stock hotspot, now I'm lucky to get 2mbps with wifi tether.

All I know is that the built-in tethering feature works on the AOSP ICS ROM I'm running, and works well. I know what you mean about it being a simple, clean design, but what I miss is the ability to see who's connected and how much data you use.

GPS Tether

I often tether my HP Touchpad to my phone's Hotspot Access Point. However sometimes I wanted to use it for navigation in the car, but alas, it has no built-in GPS!
So I developed GPS Tether that easily shares any Android phone's GPS location to the HP Touchpad through the phone's Hotspot AP, simulating an actual built-in GPS in the HP Touchpad. I originally developed and tested it for the HP Touchpad, but I found with a few tweaks it will work on almost any Android v4.2+. It works great for me and it's a pretty dependable and lightweight app, and I wanted to share it with all of you. Enjoy!

Note: If you do not have access to the Play Store, you can download the APK here
EDIT: Big update posted to the Play Store. New features included Bluetooth functionality and NMEA sharing! Check it out!
Thank you so much for this! I was just trying to set up my touchpad in my car and absolutely no apps would work correctly. I finally found yours and it is by far the most simple and it just works! So awesome that you can tether the gps and data all at the same time with it. Works like a charm!

You're very welcome! A big update adding Bluetooth and NMEA functionality is coming soon! If it works for you, I would love a 5-star rating!
On my Touchpads I run Evervolv nightlies right now. It's on Marshmallow and runs great.
I also use one of my Touchpads on my boat for dash info/navigation. I am also working on a home replacement for dedicated Android navigation devices, so keep a look out!
Open Beta Posted
I attached an open beta for anyone to try. If you do, please give me any feedback and report any errors. Be sure to check out the widgets and try them out! Thanks for helping!
Big update posted!

If anyone is having stability or functional problems with the WiFi Hotspot sharing, I'm curious about your hotspot setup. Are you using the integrated hotspot AP in Android? If not, what 3rd party hotspot AP app are you using? Also, what device are you using for the hotspot sharing device? That information may be a good clue as to what I need to look at to stabilize the WiFi hotspot sharing. Feedback suggests the WiFi hotspot location sharing is working and stable at this time for a very large majority of devices and hotspot setups, so I'm very curious what is different about your setup that prevents it from having success and/or stability over the WiFi hotspot.
Stable delivery of the location to the receiving device (regardless of the accuracy) is really what I'm looking at here, because the accuracy is dependent on the sharing devices' GPS receiver and its ability to see open sky to obtain a satellite lock. Of all people I know how frustrating that can be, because I live in heavily wooded area, and the accuracy of my sharing location is somewhere around 3000m before it can finally obtain a GPS satellite lock.
I found a bug that makes the sharing notification disappear/reappear when restarting the app while sharing, and the fix will be in the next version. Thanks for anyone's help in testing!
Update 2.1.1 posted to Google Play Store
I posted another update addressing stability issues and Play Store/Play Services compatibility issues, as well as some miscellaneous bugs. I also made great advances in the NMEA functionality, and it seems to consistently and reliably work great with GpsGate for Windows for me. If anyone else uses the NMEA sharing to a non-Android device, I would love to hear any results you come up with.
Check it out!

Great work.
With the new 2.1.1 version, I've had rare reports of high battery drain, even when everything is disabled. Could anyone confirm this for me?
I would like your opinion on the following:
FreedomPop offers the Novatel Mifi modem : http://www.comparecellular.com/mobile-internet/novatel-wireless-mifi-2/specifications.asp
It provides location using : A-GPS, S-GPS, GPS over Wi-Fi.
The idea is to use only the GPS coordinates, while the cellular signal is off. ( No internet access )
The connection will be Wi-Fi. There are drivers for Linux to use GPS over Wi-Fi and to use port number 11010.
By turning cellular signal off and using off-line maps, the HP Touchpad could work as a regular gps and reducing battery and also data. It will be something like an NMEA receiver to pass on the coordinates to any App that required location access. From your experience, would this be something that will work?
Thank you!
After testing:
It needs the network to be active to use as location. I installed a Firewall to prevent data bleeding, and all works!
