Use the new Google camera instead of the stock Sony camera? - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Google just released a new camera app on the play store and it works for every device that has KitKat, have you guys tried it? How are you liking it? Can you still take 4k videos with it? How's the quality of the images? Can you take 16:9 or just 4:3 pictures?

You can only take 4:3 photos with that app......I wouldn't recommend using it.
I think that app is really for nexus 5 users who were (understandably) appalled at the sub-standard cam app that came with that handset.
You'll get the best results with sony's home-grown app. The software algorithms will be optimised for the z2's sensor.
Also, as always, for best results one needs to familiarze themselves with manual control (i.e. ISO and white balance)...which that app completely lacks..... so it's pretty useless for Z2 users in my opinion.

Google's Kitkat camera SUCKS! And it's one of the biggest reasons why I changed my phone.

Does anyone know if the camera app can be installed separately? Because I'm definitely not planning on using the stock ROM any longer than I really have to, but the camera seems really nice.
EDIT: Nevermind. Apparently someone already did the work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2667341
EDIT2: Apparently it only works with the stock ROM *sigh*

Just tried it last night, while it may not be a bad camera app I don't think it fares anywhere near the stock Sony camera. Too limited in functions. It will be great for Nexus users though.

Yeah, that's why I'm afraid of, and it sounds logical, Sony's app will be tailored to the phone, anyway google's camera app was released just yesterday so there's room for improvement, let's hope for the best, I'm sure more options will be added in the future.
By the way you can tweak the white balance, you just need to enable the option on settings (weird )

No no, that's the white balance for the SCREEN.
There is a camera white balance that should be adjusted dependant on what lighting conditions you're shooting in. I haven't seen the Z2's options, but it should have the usual four: Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent & Incandescent.
They actually make a significant difference to the colour tones and how similar to the reality of the scene your shot ends up looking. In my experience phone cameras CAN NOT be trusted to calculate this correctly themselves (and I used to have a lumia 1020!).
Yeah this nexus app will be good for the n5 crowd but you're never going to get as good shots with an app like that (or apple's) without having the ability (and learning) to alter ISO and white balance manually.
Of course in proper photography the shutter speed and aperture are also important but unfortunately it's very hard to control these given the current CMOS limitations in phone implementation.

I'm not sure but maybe you could take 16:9 shots if you decreased the resolution to 8 MP? Like in manual mode, you can only take 4:3 shots in 20.7 MP so I think the app is taking photos with the maximum resolution and that's why it's 4:3

Tips for taking better photos
These are a few tips that is quite helpful for you guys to take good photos on your Wildfire.
1. Camera Advance Lite / Camera Advance
-There are a few settings that is quite useful and can apply it really quick.
-Useful settings, E.g: Burst setting, grid, EV, Panorama, reduced noise, OSD ......
-You can apply these setting really quick when you are in a hurry to take a good photos
2. Try not to use Zoom
-Zoom in mobile phones are fake! There are zoom, but not optical zoom and it is just digital zoom.
-If you want to enlarge focus of the photo, just go to gallery and enlarge it.
3. Take several photos instead of one
-Take a few photos and pick the best one to store it.
-Try to take from different angle and choose the best one.
4. Hold your camera steadily
5. Not to use flash
-Try to use EV/ISO to enhance the brightness of photo instead of using flashlight.
Hope these tips is helpful for you guys.
Give me a "Thanks" if this is useful =]

I've never had ANY readability issues with the compression on. I take photos of school timetables and exam schedules all the time.
Edit: Just my opinion - i normally have over 150mb of camera pics already, without compression it would be 250mb-ish.

your computer has a high resolution screen. I was talking about a hypothetical low-res screen, which you obviously dont have - which means that you dont need such high quality casual photographs. I'd rather have the 250% reduction in file size any day.
And I don't think you can fix the video quality easily. It depends on codecs which are built into the phone which I have no idea how to import from a HTC ROM.

[Camera Apps] The best Camera App for the Ultra

We all know that the stock Sony camera App isn't the greatest.
-8 megapixel with an Exmor RS sensor,
-16x digital zoom with auto focus,
-1080p HD recording, HDR,
-Burst mode,
-Face detection.
Sounds great in theory, however the applications Sony issues with its camera its utter rubbish.
So I decided to run a test on 4 different camera apps to find the best one. Take a look at the images below, and decide what you feel is the best for you. Three of the four are paid apps, but are under $4, a good investment if you want to take better pictures with your Ultra... [I didn't test the stock Ultra camera, as I have previously done a test comparing it to the Z1 camera, and it wasn't as good]
** Just tested Focal: Results were not very good zooming in. However this was not the same time of day, not 'exact' location sample, so not much point in uploading. Just didn't look as good as Z1 or even Camera Zoom FX
Settings:
Each App had it set for HDR. Some camera Apps have a huge amount of features, and I kept them at default. This included: 8Mp, ISO=Auto, WB=Auto, Focus=Auto, Quality=SuperFine
My thoughts:
The camera App "Camera FV-5" has a massive amount of features. These sound really good at first glance, however each other application has these features set for the maximum anyway. eg. It has the option to set jpeg quality to: Low, Fine, Superfine. Where as all other apps are set for super fine, and there are no options to change to lower.
However... it does have more WB and ISO flexibility. You can also change the colour saturation, and when I tested it, the images came out very green. Basically came out looking a lot like the HDR + camera app.
So because you can have that over saturation feature, and the image accuracy when zoomed in, it would have to be my pick...
1st=Camera FV-5 (2.9Mb) (features) PlayStore LINK
2nd=HDR+ (3.6Mb) (colour saturation over done) PlayStore LINK
3rd=Z1 Camera (2.5Mb) [Flash in CWM LINK]
4th=Camera Zoom FX (1.9Mb) PlayStore LINK (was a better overall image, but once zoomed in the Z1 camera had slightly more accuracy)
HDR Camera+ (3.6Mb)
Camera FV-5 (2.9Mb)
Camera Zoom FX (1.9Mb)
Z1 Camera App (2.5Mb)
HDR +
Camera FV-5
Camera Zoom FX
Z1 Camera

Anddd this is why we don't like you right now, Lex:
Everything you're saying is relative. "Terrible" is a qualitative and comparative term, not scientific and factual. Is the camera not as good as other flagship and SLRs? Obviously. But this comparative. It's a "trolling" statement because you're making a comment that is not helpful and also, is likely to piss off everyone who has posted before you. This is obviously a passable camera for many of those who have bought the phone and have kept it.
That being said, this is also a comparative thread, relative to the XZU. If the camera, with the native launcher, shoots at a 6/10 - just a number out of a hat, don't shoot me lol - then the OP is really just helping us find an app that brings it up to a 7/10. It's that simple.

I bought camera FV-5 based on this and yes I do prefer the output from it... For me its still only generating 1.9Meg Images though so I don't know if I'm missing something... Also is there an HDR setting somewhere or is it automatic?
However its worth noting that you can also capture lossless png images. You just need to change from jpeg to png in the settings... I can't really discern if the image quality is better as i'm just a casual snapper, but the file size of the png came out at 10Meg.

(Portrait/night sight) Google Camera Port Fully Working!

Hey Guys!
After trying many Google Camera ports and playing with the settings I found 1 which is pretty stable, so far everything seems to work (if not please respond and I'll update the OP).
How to install and apply my settings :
Download the app from here (Not my port, credits to the original Dev) :
Better version, quality improves but slower with starting the camera. Faster processing!
Old version, slow at processing. But starts much faster (2sec difference)
Download my config.xml (New config from 10 March) :
config for the new version (11March)
Config for the old version (10March)
After downloading both files do this :
1. Install the GCam port (like a normal apk, no root or anything is needed)
2. Copy the config.xml to /Internal Storage/GCam/Configs (if this folders don't exist, you should create them yourself)
3. Open GCam and allow the permissions
4. Double tap somewhere in the down (next to the shutter button
5. Now a menu should popup asking you for a config
6. Press restore
7. Enjoy your GCam!
Share your pictures in this thread
When I'll have time I'll add pictures (comparing stock with GCam)
Comparison Stock VS. GCam (With my config)

I'm glad I helped
If you can PM me some pictures (Stock vs. GCam), I'd wanna include some in the OP to show people that the quality really improves.
In my eyes :
GCam gives richer colors and less noise (especially in low light situations)
Thanks already!
Is night sight working? I'd love to see some pictures that please! See how much it improves the quality.

Yes, Night sight is working!
I'll today go out and about and will click a few pictures for comparing stock and GCam. Please wait for that
And I'm interested in how she behaves in the night shooting

Here's a example of how Night sight works with GCam vs Stock Moto camera.
Stock got the watermark in the left down corner
GCam doesn't have any watermark
Both were without flash
Pretty impressive!
Is there any way I can control the shutter speed in gcam? I shoot a lot of sports and I would love if I get sharp photos with moving objects.

You can try it with mine for the G7 Plus, I can't create one for the G7 because I do not have this particular phone. The only downside could be that taking a picture is a bit slower due to the Snapdragon 632 (G7P got the 636). But in general it should be working.
Let me know if it works, if so I'll add this to the OP ^^
Thanks!
Some example photos
I have tested this mod on my new 7+ and have to say the results are very good. I tested just the Night Sight and a few photospheres as the stock moto cam is probably best for everyday use in everything else - fast and easy to handle, great picture quality. However in some situations there is not such a big improvement at night with the mod - it really depends on the ambient lights and their uniformness in the scene.
Lets see:
Round one https://photos.app.goo.gl/qnfYeXaD4fgGagNTA, https://photos.app.goo.gl/wxNK9MAqQ1ShPSXL8 (taken with phone on solid support )
Round two https://photos.app.goo.gl/2pxSHSteaE64sHoNA, https://photos.app.goo.gl/Ygc4ZsDDcNNCZEeXA (taken with phone on solid support )
Round three https://photos.app.goo.gl/ATs2x7UnAyrsJot99 (just handheld; no stock image in this case)
Round four https://photos.app.goo.gl/x9yCfcdoKbWo78Sc8, https://photos.app.goo.gl/9pzQGJa4DXgLs3hp8 (handheld)
Round five https://photos.app.goo.gl/Kif1YWhRt6bCACG99, https://photos.app.goo.gl/HL4LKe9c9yQddZk3A (taken with phone on solid support)
(first is always stock automatic, second is gcam with settings from the xml file)
I have also noticed that the camera name in google photos viewer is different for both camera apps which is very good because it allows to distinguish
And yes, the photospheres struggle with straight lines (which is to be expected, as the distortions in handheld shooting angles are substantial). Otherwise they are of better or worse quality, depends on how one looks at them - a few examples:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/PEDWhbpbWpio33G98, https://photos.app.goo.gl/ACmzBHdkgkTHXAD48, https://photos.app.goo.gl/EFhJq4zvSuCqcHji8
Regarding the photospheres I wouldn't mind if they were of higher quality even if the shooting and processing takes more time (maybe some setting?) and the file will be larger. The processing happens in the backgroud anyway.
I really appreciathe the work that was done here! :good::good:

Processing takes long because our processor will do the job, and we got a SD 6xx SoC so it will take a bit longer then a 8xx SoC. But like you told, it will work in the background
I tweaked the settings to get the maximum quality without having to wait like 10 seconds when taking the pictures. I can make it process faster, but this will be a lose of the quality, it is personal preference

So, if you managed to extract maximum that is possible (at whatever computational cost) than I'm happy with it Personally I don't mind waiting those 10 seconds, it's not everyday that one shoots photospheres and even so you don't usually need 20 of them in one minute.
Maybe if the mod creator added some setting so the user can decide by himself if they prefer speed or quality and they dont need to load up a configf file each time

First of all, I am not the creator of this port. I clearly stated this in the OP, I just made these configs and shared the download links. If you load the config once your set up and don't have to load it anymore, unless you play with the settings and want to revert it like before.
Short :
Install apk, set config and you're all set. Next time you'll open the camera config is already loaded.
Works very good! Thank you!

Super resolution camera! (take 48mp or 96mp+ photos)

Hello you all!
I always look for the best posible resources to squeeze more from my phone. In this case I was looking for ways to improve even more the great camera the Poco has and so I searched the internet for super resolution applications (cameras) possible of taking multiple photos at once and then averaging them to create a higher resolution image the sensor is capable of taking, with less noise and more detail.
So I came across this old page where some scientific-like group called Almarvi has an imaging department dedicated to photography processing and there it was an super resolution demo app ( a camera app) capable of testing the algorithms of super resolution directly on Android. For those who knows about this technic, normally it is done with Photoshop o gimp, needing a computer to do so.
So I'm happy to share with you this discovery I made, I couldn't find any blog posts about it or even Reddit nor here in xda.
The app is really basic, pretty unstable, and sometimes it closes, but I must say: In various situations it beated the Google Camera port in term of details and lesser noise.
What it does is take multiple photos (you can choose how much, but normally I suggest you use less than 20), then you can preview a small crop to see the final result and adjust sharpness (as well as changing mode to median or mean, and using averaged colours or not). After the processing, you end up with a 48mp averaged photo (if choosen x2 factor, 96mp x3, etc!!)
I leave the link where you can download it for free
http://zoi.utia.cas.cz/mobilesr
I think is pretty good for taking still landscape photography or non moving subjects. Gcam is still gcam, but this app if used well can give a sharper and best looking image.
All this been said, I found more than 96mp (x3) is not worthy because of the file size and image doesn't improve more than 48mp.
Sorry for the long post, but I think this is a very rare app, people should know it exists besides the well known gcam.
Try it and tell me, and remember, steady hands!U
Update: You can change exposure value with the volume rockers !
To clarify, it creates a real 48mp image (or more), I tested zooming in and you can zoom deeper comparing to gcam, and you can check the information of the photo to see the dimensions. When zooming in you can see less compression and better details than gcam in most situations, difference is very clear when you see it in a computer screen.
It works. How to make it bigger than 48mp?

Touch the 3 dots in the bottom right corner to open the menu, and touch in "SR factor" to change it, 2.0 is 48mp, 3.0 would make an 109mp image, you won't notice much of a difference though but is fun having such large image (use 10 or less photos or it will close probably)
It mention it uses yuv format acquired images, thought poco wasn't able tu produce this kind of images because of lack of full level 3 camera api

I think it has, that's why gcam port is also fully working, and this app works too, you even can save the yuv frames but I never tried
Pretty good results (see picture), but at 100% the quality betrays this technology. Anyway, there is place to improving. I'll follow this thread.

Yes, it's pretty limited since you can't zoom or change the exposure for example, but I think it is useful for some special situations, like a landscape

It looks like it won't be updated because the app is basically just a demo they used to test the super resolution algorithm they created, is a shame because it's the best implementation I could find on a mobile phone, and any phone with camera 2api enabled could improve a lot their photo quality with this app, specially those who don't have a gcam port. I tested the app a lot , for several months, and I've found that In terms of quality it beats the gcam most of the times, but it doesn't mean it produces a better photo, gcam is well know for taking great looking photos in just one click, but if you zoom in and compare the two photos side by side you will see this app bringing a lot more detail and less compression artifacts, noise is in several cases equal or less than gcam aswell.
In the end, I want it to share because it's another good option, and maybe if someone wants to print their photos taken with their phones then this app will help a lot thanks to the super resolution

Actually the gcam port is not 100% functional, for example it doesn't have a working "photo booth" or "top shot" specifically because the pocophone camera drivers won't support yuv format which is needed for said features

Are you sure? I know there are features missing but that doesn't mean necessarily that it can't take yuv photos, at least in this app I can, there is an option to save yuv files and they appear in my files when I take the photo, I think this app only works using yuv pictures to make the super resolution, if Poco doesn't support them then this app should throw some error (like the one you get if you try this application on devices without camera 2 api enabled.) Please check that information

EDIT: I accidentally found how to change exposure values in this app but I think it isn't working, only works for the preview but no in the final image, by using the volume rockers.
EDIT 2: I tried again this time activating the option use lowest iso possible and then you can adjust exposure using volume rockers!, it changes the shutter speed, so now it only lacks zoom and a better stability, but pretty good alternative and best of all free!

Guys, the app is good. I tested it thoroughly and tested also the upscaling of Photoshop, which is far worse than SuRmob's.
My example of SuRmob capture: link.
The upscaled Gcam picture using Photoshop's best algoritms: link.
And because my rebel neurons wanted to test also the result from RAW picture upscaled using Photoshop, I also made a collage with two crops (100% scale) with SuRmob result vs RAW jpg upscaled with PS. See it attached in the link below.
Those who got bad results I advice them to let default settings. I only modified ISO (to low), 10 captures instead of 5 and never use sharpness over 3.

I searched everywhere, but in Android this is the best I could find. The only one paid app that does this is cortex camera, but I tried it and it hangs when trying to take well lit scenarios, it's really buggy and abandoned in early stages by the dev, but in iOS there are 3 cameras, the same cortex (much better than Android and updated one), Hydra and other one I can't remember.

Exactly, those are the settings I recommend too. After months of testing it I can say you need to experiment with it to get the best results, but the best about this camera I think is the far more natural looking photos it produces, and very noticeable quality improvement when looking on bigger screens or printed.
I also tested against raw and gcam and, while gcam is still the preferred choice in a lot of cases, when needing take a more detailed photo or cropping I use this app, so, the best I think is to leave it installed and use it when you like it.
This was my secret app so show some love , I think is a really great discovery, not only for this device, but for everyone with camera2 API, I think if xda developers found this app they would write a post about it because it is really good
Isn't this the same as almalence's "Super" mode in thrir "a better camera" app? Never tried that app on the Poco, but I think that app checks the devicename in the build.prop regarding the super mode. This feature was only available for the Nexus 5 and a few other devices, so probably "Super" mode won't show up on the Poco. Anyway, thanks for the demo app link!

[UPD] Super-Pack of Google Camera MODs for OnePlus 8 Pro!

Hello OnePlus Addicts,
Here is a Custom-Made SUPER-PACK of some of the newest Google Camera Mods available out there, which contains the work of several developers such as Greatness (Rakin), B-S-G, P.Z.D, MTSL, LMC and Wichaya.
Please, keep in mind that I am not an app developer, myself, just an enthousiastic end-user happy to share the good stuff!
DOWNLOAD (APKs + Custom Profiles): https://gofile.io/d/OCsHTd
[ LMC R15 is currently the latest GCAM Mod included in this Super-Pack ]
>>> The included XML configuration profiles are made for ONEPLUS 8 PRO ONLY! Using them on another device may result in some serious bugs, crashes, and it will definitely not bring you the same user experience... <<<
1) Just download the file above, unzip it (using the provided password), then install the apk file of your choice on your device.
2) Extract the appropriate xml configuration file, as well as its folder, onto your phone internal storage.
3) Then, just start the app, give the necessary privileges, double-click on the lower black area near the 'shutter' button of the app, it should allow you to load custom profiles. Select my xml, press ok, done!
Some of these mods come with Face Detection, Face Retouch (both Front & Back sensors), great color reproduction, low noise, excellent details (especially on the main back sensor), FHD & 4K videos @ 30/60FPS with OIS/EIS stabilization, Night Shots, Astro-Photography, Portrait and more...
However, there is still no Distortion Correction/Fix on Ultra-Wide sensor, on any GCam mod I have tried sor far actually. This might come in the future, but it seems to be quite hard for devs to implement in their respective mods. This can be fixed by some apps in post-editing anyway...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are some 'hidden' shortcuts in some of these GCam mods! For example, with Greatness, P.Z.D, MTSL and LMC, you can access the (very useful) Exposure/ISO menu by long-pressing the circle 'gallery' button on the lower-right of the main app screen, which will provide you with a choice of ISO settings, as well as Exposure choices. The lower the ISO, the better the final picture quality, but it will take more time to 'capture' your image. The same goes for Exposure; the longer the time, the better your image (and the lower iso at the same time), but you may have to be steady if you go lower than 1/10s.
A long-press on the Camera-Switch button (on Greatness Mod), on the lower-left of the main app screen, will directly bring you to the App Settings.
Double-Press the viewfinder itself will zoom 2x to what you want to shoot, and will display the Zoom Bar at the bottom, so you can finely adjust it!
There is also a 'Sunset' shortcut on the main screen/viewfinder (Greatness Mod), just above the 3 back sensors, which should theoretically bring better color reproduction and lighting to your sunsets.
Also, one personal advice when using some, if not all of these mods: You will get BETTER EXPOSURE as well as LIGHTER SHADOWS when selecting your focus zone MANUALLY (within limits of your focus zone of interest, obviously). This goes for Daylight shots, as well as Nightshots, and another advice would be to try to select either a Dark area of your image (when shooting in daylight) OR one of the Brightest zones (for example, some streetlights at night), and then take the shot. The App should then do a better job at adjusting your Exposure, Contrast and Shadows, and this will greatly reduce risks of Under-Exposing or Over-Exposing your shots. When taking snapshots of people, in case the app can't detect their face, make sure you select it manually, you will definitely get brighter, more detailed skin results. It may be one extra-step, but I personally found out that it was usually worth doing!

I've managed to get wide-angle and tele to work perfect with our 8 Pro, as well as great quality from those 3 lenses, especially the primary one. Front cam works good as well.
[N00b m0de 0N] I made an XML that you could load to the app to get everything set perfect, so you can play with it immediately, file is attached to this thread. Make sure you have created a 'GCam' folder in your internal storage, as well as a 'Configs7' subfolder, and copy the xml file inside this subfolder. Then just load my file by double-clicking on the black area of the GCam app, near the shutter button. [N00b m0de 0FF]

Hi names,
Not getting any specific yellow tint in 'normal' low light on my side, except maybe in extremely dark / near obscurity which gets slightly orange (not the normal night scenery you would capture, anyway). It's definitely related to the AWB, so I suggest you try some other options in the settings if you get this yellow tint, but it might also be that the device lens cannot even "guess" the white balance if too dark to capture. However, if you don't get this yellow tint with stock, as you mention, then it's definitely something you may want to tweak in your GCam AWB settings. Good luck and please share your results with us

As far as I could see, it seems to work fine, but I didn't do side-by-side comparison between stock camera app and this GCam release.
Gonna give her a test drive with your settings.
Edit: some photo comparisons. I believe I've uploaded in the proper order so as to tell which camera is which.

Have to say, video in the dark compared to photo is awful on the 8pro camera, be er noticed it before , Superb in the day but at night it's pants.
Thanks for adding this..will give it a shot. Cheers
Edit: installed, working well. Will test tonight.
Never seen that photosphere before, that's nifty. Anyway to actually view them images though? Gallery just shows like half an image.

Hi, thank you for your feedback and for adding those pictures, interesting to compare. As you can see, contrasts are slightly boosted, which results in a bit darker photos, something you can counterbalance to some extent by adding +2 brightness in your settings. It depends on people's preference though, and I personally tend to prefer photos with more contrasts in general, which makes them look a bit more 'dramatic'.
But where this GCam will shine compared to the stock app is definitely in low-light / night-time scenarios, so I invite you to compare both apps and check the results carefully. You should be able to see how vastly superior GCam app is, in terms of noise, dark areas coming back to life, details. As some say, it's like switching on the light in the middle of the night, but better see by yourself
I have another GCam version and if this one is like the one I use it's great in low light compared to stock. It's not even comparable at how bad stock is (everything is red).
