[Q] Samsung S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks please be gentle with me if I have got this all wrong and posted in the wrong place.
I am based in the UK.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 GT19000.
It has never been modified in anyway and I have performed all updates as notified.
The other day I got a notification that there was a new firmware update.
I did a OTA update which downloaded but failed on install at about 25%.
It recommended I use Samsung Kies with USB connection.
I connected via Kies and Kies reported that a new version was available.
I clicked to download and it appeared to do something but it was still reporting a new version available.
It reported current firmware version as: PDA:MK6 / PHONE:MK1 / CSC:MK4 (VOD)
It reported new firmware version as: PDA:NA5 / PHONE:NB1 / CSC:NB1 (VOD)
My phone says it has Android 4.3 installed.
Can someone briefly explain what this is all about and what the update actually is.
If I do need this update any help as to why it is not installing by OTA or Kies would be helpful.

Your update appears to be failing to install. In phone settings select factory reset, which will wipe all your data, photos and settings from the internal storage, then try the update again.
If it still fails then follow the guide in general forum on how to flash a firmware with odin, you can download the latest UK Vodafone firmware from sammobile.com.

I called Samsung service centre this morning.
They did a remote control of my laptop and phone.
It appears that I have Android 4.3 on the phone which is the highest that the S3 can handle.
The engineer wasn't sure what the upgrade waiting was but checked to ensure I had the latest firmware for the phone.
The Samsung engineer was really helpful and friendly and worked at my speed not his as most tech guys do.
Thanks for your help.

I had the same issue, the update being shown in kies is correct. Just verify your phone status by going into settings 》about 》status. If the status of your phone is shown as official then its ok, otherwise reset the binary counter to zero using triangle away and flash the latest version via odin.

There is an update just released for Vodafone uk it is the PDA:NA5 / PHONE:NB1 / CSC:NB1 (VOD) version, most likely it is a server overload problem if a lot of people are trying to update at the same time, give it a few days then run kies again, it will update eventually.
Or you can download the NA5 version from here, download Odin from my signature and install it that way

[Q] KIES does not show latest firmware

I got a Galaxy S3 around a week back. The CSC was set to COA and it was running the old firmware. KIES used to show the current and latest firmware.
I have updated to the XXALF2 using ODIN and also set the CSC to BTU. However KIES does not show the lastest firmware anymore. Just the current firmware. Does that mean, KIES wont be able to update my phone?
i have done exactly the same & getting the same result in kies, i think you have to be on unmodified rom without flash count triggered? i could be wrong though
Right after the flash. My CSC was set to KOR. However I changed it to BTU using *#1234*IMEI*. I was getting the message that KIES cannot update the firmware when it was on KOR. That message seems to have gone.
This problem is quite confusing.
i flashed mine with stock LF2 BTU but kies states "your device does not support upgrading via kies"
and my CSC shows "CSC:LF2 (H3G)" is this normal?
Hmm. I had that message on KIES when my CSC changed to KOR. After changing it to BTU, that message was gone.
Initially - XXALE8 -COA (KIES showed the version the phone and the latest version).
After flashing - XXALF2 -KOR (KIES states that it wont be able to update firmware).
Now - XXALF2 - BTU (KIES does not show the latest firmware. Just the one on the phone).
I got this problem too i think it`s bcuz i rooted my phone..i have stock firmware btw
I have seen that on a few forums that rooting might trigger that. However I am on the stock firmware only. I haven't rooted my phone.
sry for double post but i fixed my problem
the only thing i had to do was to reset the counter with triangle away
Where is this triangle located?
anyone with rooting experience explain what the problem is or is this normal after rooting?
should i have only flashed PDA & not PHONE & CSC or is that not possible?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
here u can find triangle away all u have to do is install the app and then press reset counter after u open the app
then it will reboot and then u have to press the volume up button to reset the counter
sry for my english
Do I need to root my phone. If so, how and how can I unroot it after using the application?
if ur not rooted u dont need to run triangle away bcuz ur counter is set to 0 by default
there must be another solution for you...just wait to somebody else answer..
i thought even flashing stock with odin without root still bumps up the flash counter?
So I have managed to fix the problem. Here's my solution.
1) Root the phone.
2) Run the triangle away application to reset the counter.
3) After that's done, wipe the data on the phone (volume up+home+power button) and select the options:
a) wipe data/factory reset
b)wipe cache partition
c) advanced - wipe dalvik cache
4) Remove battery.
5) Put the battery back in and hold (volume down+home+power button).
6)Start ODIN and restore to the firmware that was ON THE PHONE.
7)Reset the phone to default after thats done.
I did that and now KIES is back to normal for me. And now it show XXALF2 (BTU).
How do you fix it & keep root?

Ive rooted using cfroot and kies is still recognising my phone for updates
Although i have not done anything but root
Kies upgrade depends onan actual upgrade for the firmware being on the server .Also the phone codes you present it matching firmware on the server.Root may or may not alter such codes.
Solution ignore Kies join XDA and learn how to flash or download stock firmware .

Sorry guys, changed CSC to BTU using *#272*IMEI# all good now, kies shows my firmware & latest available also shows my device status as "Normal" NOT "Modified"!

[Q] Firmware update issue

I finally got the LFB update OTA today after waiting for 2 weeks and I downloaded it but when I tried to install it, it stopped at 30%, rebooted the phone and gave an error message saying that it can't do the update and that I should use KIES.
I'm rooted with no mods installed or flashed apart from a few pushed apps into /system/app.
I've had an OTA update before and that installed fine but I wasn't rooted at the time.
I know i can flash via odin but id rather not.
Any help appreciated.

Kies sucks to be honest, it worked well on the S2 but on the S3 it doesn`t . What you can do is go to a service center and have them update it, flash with Odin as you said ( wich is the fastest and safest way btw) or wait for an OTA update. Or maybe retry a couple of times with Kies.

I think you misunderstood me. I haven't used kies yet. I've been trying to update via the OTA update and whilst its in 'download mode' (the one u get when flashing with odin) installing the update, it stops at 30% and the droid icon lies down with a red triangle on it. Then the phone reboots and gives me the error..
Btw, if I flash the latest firmware over my current stock LF2 via odin, will it wipe everything?

Sorry, wasn`t quite awake this morning Nothing will be wiped. The best thing you can do is to flash the rom yourself with Odin.

I think I'll pass on this update as Ive read around that they've removed the local search functionality when you long press menu on home screen.
Just gonna wait for a mod and then update.

how to update camera firmware
After I root and install 3rd rom, my siii rear camera was bad, 'camera fault".
when click *#34971539#, there was no anything but "camera firmware standard", then jump to home screen, display a dialog box,"factory test stop".
Don't damage the hardware of the camera? But it has got well ever after I reset and dual wipe. I want to camera firmware, can I?
It's coming home, it's coming home, local search is coming home
Just in from my moan to Samsung Mobile UK:

[Q] No update available after unroot

Good day,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 phone, which I recently unrooted. I followed this guide to unroot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710613
I used Odin3, v1.85. The file I put in the PDA section was downloaded from the site in the guide and was the following: I9300XXALF5_I9300PROALF1_I9300XXLF5_HOME.tar.md5
I did run into some problems while attempting to unroot though, a few times I started the process in Odin to find it had failed after the first quarter of the bar was filled. I think this might have had something to do with my pc ejecting my phone whenever it felt like, but I'm not completely sure (the rooting was done on a different pc by someone else). Of course, because of that I couldn't properly start my phone and it gave me an error message about the firmware not being correctly installed. I persisted and eventually I got it working, though no idea how I managed.
Now, before the root and during the root I had Android 4.1.1, but after the unrooting it went to 4.0.4. Whenever I try to search for an update, either via WiFi, 3G or even Kies on the pc, it says there aren't any new updates. Device status is normal, and custom binary download is No. Bought my phone in Belgium, if that matters any.
Screenshot of the about screens in attachment. Is there anything I can do to get it to update, preferably without the use of Odin?
Please be gentle, I'm a complete noob when it comes to this and I'm not looking to reroot.
Thank you for reading through!
just connect your phone with computer and update via samsung kies
else, download the firmware from http://sammobile.com/firmware/ for your country and flash using pc odin

Thanks for taking the time to reply! I however already tried with Samsung Kies, and it says there isn't an update there too. I tried finding the latest firmware on the site you linked for unrooting, and it came up with the file I mentioned in the first post, which resulted in 4.0.4. I'm kinda hesitant to flash again, since I encountered problems when I unrooted.
EDIT: Just tried with Kies again, and it tells me it is the latest firmware. It says something like this:
PDA:LF5/PHONE:LF5/CSC:LF1 (PRO)
Root your phone again
And install mobile odin
Then wipe data and cache using Mobile Odin
It will factory reset
Then you will see that your device status becomes normal
Then go to super su settings and choose full unroot

Thank you! I will try that soon, when I have time. Just a question though, is there no need for Triangle Away with this method? I remember using it for the unroot before.
I think you should also use triangle away to reset the flash counters

Guess I'll post it here for people who happen upon the same problem.
Got it fixed, using this guide:
androidcritics.com/how-to-update-samsung-galaxy-s3-to-official-android-4-1-1-jelly-bean-xxdlib-firmware/
Basically just used Odin to flash the file downloaded there (I9300XXDLIB_I9300OXFDLI1_I9300XXDLIB_HOME.tar.md5) on the phone, worked after the second try. I think my problem is that my computer decides to eject my phone whenever it feels like.
After flashing 4.1.1, it found and installed 4.1.2 update, so I think it's fixed now.
Thanks to everyone who helped. Cheers!

[Q] Help pleaseee used odin by accident, cant figure out what to do

Hi,
Me and my partner both got s3's recently his on contract mine on like buy as you view. Mine received the 4.1.1 update through the phone and after waiting a few weeks and still nothing on his we decided to update it via computer. I used odin because i saw on a post that thats what you were supposed to use and flashed it to 4.1.1. I then realised i had put the wrong version on (German one i think) and it was causing errors so we flashed again to 4.1.1 the UK version.
He is now on:
Android version 4.1.1
Baseband version I9300XXDLID
I do not know if that's correct but everything seems a ok.
However since then my phone received the 4.1.2 update and we want the same update on his phone. It does not find it on the phone. Since then i learned KIES is the samsung software not odin. No updates can be found via KIES cos the software isn't supported. I want to be able to use KIES with his phone again, can i reverse the odin update anyway?? I rang samsung and he told me it will be like that forever now and i will never be able to use KIES?
Can anyone assist me. I really want ot be able to update from KIES again instead of using odin.
Sorry if i sound like a noob im only good with apple technology haha!!
(edit)
P.S. My software is
Android version 4.1.2
Baseband version I9300XXELLA
we are both on Orange if thats any help? His came on Ice Cream Sandwich though and mine came on 4.1.1
If the phone isnt locked on orange just download 4.1.2 from sammobile and instal via odin as u did beffore.

Odin is official samsung. You can use Kies if you use OFW. If your current OFW doesn't support Kies, just download other from samfirmware.com.

i have no idea what OFW stands for lol. Samsung told me on the phone i should not have used odin as it will void warranty. Im trying to revert the update so that i can use kies again cos it will not work at all now, and get the updates directly on the phone. Is this even possible?

Before flashing with odin try doing a factory reset on your device and then check if your device status is NORMAL to do that go to settings>about devoce>status>device status if it says normal then u are ok if it says modified try flashing the stock room with Odin and doing factory reset after the flash and if that dosnt work your device is maybe rooted and u need to unroot and do a triangle away here is the guide how to do that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710613

Yes you want 100\% the exact firmware that came with the phone including CSC .
A stock Samsung firmware can be flashed via Odin without any problems .

Ypu can achieve this by using KIES.
Open kies
Start recovering and make sure you can put your cells serial number somewhere
Connect phone only when kies asks to
Voila, stock as used to.

im not bothered about loosing my user data but the option isnt there for me, it says phones that need this are listed below and the phone does not show. Not even if i put it in recovery mode. Any assistance would be great i am however just going to download some 4.1.2's today to try and fix it. I did notice however that when in download mode at the bottom it said something about multi CSC should it say this? LOL i wish i was more technologically savvy but i am literally only good at apple software. Wish id just waited Someone said to do one with BTU on the end and it should correct the CSC code? any idea if this is right?
I should however imagine it would delete all user data, people on other posts have said it was lost

Ok if u want the 4.1.2 update and u want to be able to use OTA i advise u to do flash the latest 4.1.2 room from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610 there is even a guide there how to flash it , if your device shows modified status after the flash just reboot into Android Recovery by holding Vol UP + Home + Power till you see Samsung Galaxy S3 displayed on screen , then u will see the recovery options, do a factory wipe and wipe cache then reboot and u should now be able to receive OTA updates .
I am also using the same room and all is working ok OTA shows no new updates but i think when the updates hits i will be able to get it via OTA , kies is not working but i think u dont need to worry about it because u can always flash via Odin .
Here is a guide how to flash a room with working Kies and OTA
First u need to root your device u can do this by following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273
Edit: When u finish rooting u should use this app its called triangle away http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114 and use it to reset the counter .
When u are done with triangle away then download this on your phone it available on play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manniakk.cscselector&hl=en
Run it and change your CSC to BTU this will factory reset your phone after u done that u should flash the UK room from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
When u finish that u should boot into recovery and wipe data/factory reset , you should now be able to use Kies .
I am not sure this will work 100% but it should , if u could remember what was the CSC and room before you flashed the devices with odin you could flash that firmware.
Tell me if it worked.

Firmware Upgrading Issues?

Hey guys, Samsung finally released another update for the Galaxy Ace and i want to download it
I did recently root my phone + extended the internal storage
But when i try and do a software update with my phone it downloads but then it reboots and goes to the installing part it won't install and shows a notification saying Failed
I then tried to upgrade with Kies, and all it did was stay on 100% on the downloading components part, nothing was happening to my device
So then i Un-Rooted my phone and then tried the two steps above same thing happend
Now i am thinking to whipe my phone and re-try it?
Also could you answer these:
1. If my phone is rooted will it affect firmware upgrades / will it rooted make firmware upgrades fail
2. Do i need to put it on Download mode?
