[Q] Galaxy s4 i545 boot - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have been looking and reading and trying Odin. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 Version and installed my T-Mobil SIM. Every things to work but----I would like to install a different ROM. Have the phone unlocked and rooter with Saferoot. Root does't always stay rooted. When I tray Odin I get error and phone says protected.

You can't flash roms unless you use safestrap and they are all derived from TW.
The bootloader is locked and there is no unlock method.
SEARCH!

Thanks. Really I did search. Just don't understand everything. Even now going back and re-reading safestrap didn't see I545VRUEMK2 in any list of devices.
Just installed Safestrap-JFLTEVZW-3.71. Guess my SD card is not big enough. Can't make a backup.

Too small...32gb mib and redirect your data like photos videos and music to be sent there. Safestrap saves all backups there as well and it is where you want place rom install files. I run 2 custom roms and I keep the stock rom intact.

Thanks Will do.

Now I am in trouble. Installed ab 6gb SD card so I could try Safestrap. Installed Hyperdrive ROM. Now Hyperdrive is stuck (beginning android os 4.3 boot sequence) .
Pulled the SD card and still tries to boot Hyperdrive. Help

Did you install it to a rom slot or the stock slot? If you flashed to a rom slot, then delete it and try to reflash.

[Q] My Phone is bricked maybe?

Hello I'm new here how is everyone?
Okay here is my issue:
I have a Verizon Galaxy S4 its on Android 4.3 with the build ending in mj7. It is rooted via the vroot method. So I've been looking around for a custom recovery so I could flash a ROM (preferably CM 11). I've came across a safestrap version that worked with my build (3.70). I downloaded the apk, installed it, installed the recovery and booted into recovery fine. I made my back up via the tool and also have a Samsung kies back up from before my root. So after I backed up my data I did my data wipe of the phone. The generic wipe my SD card and the data in it are good. Well long story short the phone turned off without installing a new ROM. Well phone powers on and stuck on Samsung logo with the open lock on it.
Was wondering can I..
A: Somehow force the safestrap to start via adb and restore my back up?
B: restore my back up through adb itself?
C: Use Odin to restore my stock firmware somehow even while rooted?
D: Sideload CM from adb?
E: I'm out of luck buy a new phone?
Thank you.

You should be able to use Odin to get back to stock MJ7. There are guides in the development section. Just so you know, you can't flash Cm 11 with Safestrap. As far as I know, the only ROM that works with MJ7 and Safestrap is Hyperdrive 11. Even if you're on an older base, you would only be able to flash TW based ROMs with Safestrap.
My suggestion, do A LOT of reading. There's tons of info on these boards.

Have you tried to boot the phone into recovery and restore your backup with SS? I never used SS but if you can make a backup I'm sure you can restore one as well

It worked. Didn't the first time but tried ODIN again with a stock mj7 ROM I found here.
I restored back to factory and implemented vroot once again, swapped out the Chinese (Korean?) superuser for our good old traditional one. I then re-installed safestrap apk and re-installed the recovery. I went in and found my back up I made earlier today and restored my phone back to how it exactly was before all this mess started.
Lesson learned I'll do my due-diligence next time and just keep my root till I can find a solid method to getting CM/Stock android on my Galaxy S4.
I'll try Hyperdrive 11
Thank you guys for all your help.;

[Q] SafeStrap Help

I installed Safestrap onto my GS4 in hopes of installing a ROM to get ride of touchwiz. I found a safestrap compatible ROM and installed it through safestrap. Now I cant boot into the system. I wiped all data and cache and factory setting. When ever I restart, sometimes it says: [Safestap: Disabled] or [Safestrap: enabled] I can access recovery. I tapped continue on both and just doesn't work.
Bit of a noob so dont be too hard
EDIT: I Installed Hyperdrive successfully until the end. Its at this screen: Beginning Android OS 4.3 boot sequence... .... .... ...." It has stayed here for hours, all night. Should I take out the battery? Buttons don't work

I created the rom slot. Im MK2, I used safestrap because I have a locked BL. Whats SS? I used a ROM called Barebone Stock.
When ever I flash a rom, all that happens when I restart is it says safestrap: Disabled or enabled. I choose recovery every time because rebooting doesnt do any thing.

SS = abreviation for safestrap, thought that was pretty obvious
barebone ROM? Im not familar with that one being SS compatible. The safestrap disabled msg on display means the stock rom slot is active and the phone should boot to stock. When you have rom loaded into a rom slot 1 or 2 or whatever, you must "activate" that slot for it to boot. I would suggest deleting the rom slot you made and start over.

So, let's start from the basics - you're not telling us what versions of anything that you're using.
First, what build is your phone? i.e. the stock slot.
What version of Safestrap are you trying to use?
What version of Hyperdrive are you trying to flash?
When the phone hangs like that during boot, something critical has crashed that's preventing the boot.
You're booting Android 4.3 according to the above, so you should be flashing using SS 3.71 on build MJ7 or MK2 and Hyperdrive RLS14.
If all that is correct: the build is MJ7 or MK2, the Safestrap is 3.71, and you're trying Hyperdrive RLS14, then the likely cause is that you have a bad download. Check the md5sum after downloading to ensure that it's OK. Download it to your PC, not directly to the phone, then check the MD5 before transferring it to your sdcard and flashing it.

OK, If your stock slot is damaged, you probably need to re-flash and start over.
Download the MK2 "No-Wipe" rom image from this thread and flash it using ODIN 3.09 - that'll get you back to stock, Then try the Safestrap stuff again. Seems like you have the right versions of things, so if you follow the directions, it should boot OK.
Be sure to check the MD5 of anything you download. There's free software available that does that.

Well you probably just need the USB drivers for your phone that's all. I just went through that myself with my new laptop. I ended up just googling it and finding the right ones.
It will work for you, once your back to stock just use Saferoot again, then install SafeStrap again... Then be certain whatever ROM u flash is SafeStrap compatible. I'd say use ROM slots for the time being until your more comfortable with things.... Don't take that the wrong way... Just saying is all. Messing with the stock slot can lead you back to where you're at right now that's all.

I am running slot 1 liquid smooth and slot 2 slim ROM ,I'm have internal memory remaining only 1gb so I decided to delete stock slot..for gaining some internal memory.. How to do that ..??,actually safe strap installed in stock slot.. If I delete stock slot how I can possible to come in safestrap recovery any idea .. if you fully wipe the stock slot and then reflash one of the roms from like slot 1 on stock slot you would have more space.
Sent from my XT912 using Tapatalk
You CANNOT delete stock slot.
You can only wipe it.
If you need to free space, delete one of the other slots, or as above post says, move one of your Rom to stock slot and then delete that one.

No, the safestrap that you are talking about is the safestrap.apk. You use that to install/uninstall the hijack that safestrap uses to boot into recovery. Since you have root rights, you gave safestrap the OK to install a bootloader hijack, which operates before the OS(ROM) is loaded up. If you wiped stock slot, then rebooted the phone with out installing a ROM, the hijack would still be there, you would still be able to boot into recovery, you just wouldn't be able to go any farther than recovery. You would just get a black screen afterwards because, well, there wouldn't be a ROM for it to boot too.
If you wipe the stock slot, then install the ROM and Gapps that you want back onto that slot, everything would be fine.
Also from what I understand you CANNOT restore a backup from another slot to stock slot. You will have to do it fresh.
Hope this helped
Thanks a lot for ur nice guide.. Will give a try... Which rom is best suitable for flashing in stock slot.. Only real benefits of putting a ROM in stock slot is saving space on your internal sd card. There are other, little conveniences but that is the main one
I don't know what you mean about installing the recovery without the stock ROM. Safestrap is a root required.apk(application) that installs a hijack for a custom recovery. Once installed it stays there like I said in the previous post, til it is uninstalled or upgraded, or you flash a fresh firmware with a utility.
You don't want to upgrade it without having a ROM installed prior. The new safestrap .apk gives you the option of uninstalling the old 3.65 hijack then installing the new 3.72, it won't install over the old, you have to remove it first. You have to do this in the application, not in recovery, so that means a ROM will already have to be installed.
Right now you should just concentrate on flashing a ROM in stock slot if that is what you want, worry about the recovery update later, as it isn't a requirement. Maybe do some reading first so you have a better understanding of what you are doing before you do it. And figure out how to get yourself out of a problem before you get into it.
As for ROM's, all of them work with safestrap. All of them have their own individual kinks, bugs, and fixes. You would have to read through the individual ROM's forums see which ones you want to try out. I like SlimKat myself, and there are also custom JB ROM's. Since you are using a xt912 you will want spyder versions of ROM's not umts-spyder, that is for xt910
Thanksbfor the fruitful info

If you are only going to have one slot has to be stock. If you read hashcode's information on that you would have known. Since you are getting the Motorola logo, your bootloader is still there. You are a repairable softbrick.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192467
This is matlgrofs utility for the xt912.. make sure to thank him. Follow the direction's EXACTLY!
It will flash a fresh firmware on your phone. And allow you to root it. The safestrap .Apk is a 2.xx Version so your backups wont work with it. So after you flashed the firmware and rooted, you can install the newer safestrap Apk.
Battery life is pretty important with this process, so the phone needs to be 100 (the phone doesn't charge in AP) you cannot cut this corner, if your battery goes dead in the middle of the firmware flash your phone very well will become a brick

thanks for the reply. I actually figured it out on my own. I already had that utility because I used it to root. I just didn't realise I could use it to recover the phone from a soft brick. I also didn't know what the button combo was but I did some reading this morning and thanks to the helpful post of others in various threads I sorted everything out. So everything is running good now and I'm using liquid smooth kitkat with ART enabled and tethering works so I'm happy. This is my first experience with a motorola device and so far it's been the easiest to get rooted and a custom recovery installed, but that whole rom slot thing through me off. thought since I had a rom installed already I could just wipe the stock rom but learned it doesnt work like that...so now I know. Thanks again for the reply though, your info is spot on
This is intriguing to think about, so can safestrap be uninstalled / installed from any working rom slot with any working custom rom?
I can see why this would be helpful, especially to save internal space. Is there a good minimalistic custom rom with enhanced utilities that could be installed in the stock slot for maintenance purposes? Or should I just backup my stock rom and put my favorite rom in the stock slot and just use it for advanced maintenance?
I do think though the first option might be smarter since it's good to have a maintenance stock rom that won't be modified through regular use to be able to boot into for specific tasks.
Any recommendations for stock slot replacement? you did mention slimkat, but are there any ultra basic yet utility heavy custom roms out there for spyder? (I'm using XT912)
Also do I need to do any other specific backup of my stock rom? other than the full back up in safestrap?

[Q] confused to no end, once i get this this going i am not messing with it

Breakdown:
Was rooted with twrp recover running jellywizmj9
Accidently installed ota 4.3 firmware and got stuck in a bootloop
I managed somehow to the other day to install the stock rom that was rooted but then attempted to unlock the bootloader so I could reinstall trwp and custom roms again. This is were things fell apart.
Prior to trying to unlock the bootloader I had the following on the phone (trying to recall exactly from memory) Android version 4.1.1 and baseband vraljb
Using odn3 v3.07
I have flashed the pit file successfully
I have flashed root66_vzw_stock_system.tar.md5 successfully
---- still locked on boot screen
VRALJB fails in sboot.in
And WAMC3 says its unsupported version
In my oden mode the screen says:
Product name: sch-i605
Custom binary downloads: no
Current binary: Samsung official
System status: custom
Know warranty void: 0
RP swrev: A2
I have tried removing the sim card and sd card resetting phone I think I tried it all.
Right now I will settle for a functioning phone. Rooted or unrooted, bootloader or not. I just want my phone functioning again.
ok here is a solution that i found on xda. since i downloaded 4.3 i screwed myself until someone comes up with an unlocker for bootloader. I had to install vzwemj9. the phone is now working and is rooted still.
With this being said with the phone being rooted is there any way outside of the bootloader to install custom roms?

If you used ODIN to restore to stock 4.3 MJ9, then I'm confused how you're still rooted. Did you root it with saferoot?
If it's rooted, you should be able to flash custom ROM's with safestrap. Check it this thread on Safestrap..... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51616723

the only way that i can tell that i am rooted is that super user is installed. ok after further investigation the program is there but there is no SU binary installed. it says i manually need to reroot. can i use safestrap for that?

Yep. You should be able to root 4.3 MJ9 with saferoot. Here's the link to saferoot-- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48392009. If you have data and apps leftover from before you restored, it sounds like everything might not have got wiped with the factory restore. Did you use Droidstyle's guide to restore? You might see if a factory reset from within the settings of the stock ROM would wipe everything.... and you could also try to do another Odin restore.

It sounds like you took the OTA update to the recent 4.3 VRUAND3 build, which doesn't work with saferoot. Others have had success using ODIN to revert back to 4.3 VRUEMJ9. You can use Droidstyle's guide to restore back to factory stock MJ9.... from there, you should be able to use saferoot on MJ9 to get root access.
This thread discusses the issue I am talking about.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52764286&highlight=sdm#post52764286

How I downgraded from NC5 OTA to MK2 and back to Rooted NC5!!! Complete Step-By-Step

**********************MK2 and Newer Firmware Only*******************************
I'm back I have had time to totally rework the process. I have attached a PDF that contains the instructions as well as I link to all the files you will need.
All I ask if that if you have a problem with the process post or PM me if you dont think the instructions are clear enough please PM me so I can get it resolved first.
I have uploaded all the files that you will need and put them all in one place.
Added Screenshots of what to put in Odin!!!
Instead of using the rooted NC5 rom towards the end of the process, can I just use some other NC5 rom like HD16?
I haven't tested it yet with hd16. I would use the nc5 rooted and then make a backup in safestrap. So you can go back and forth.

Good call... I'm about to start now, just downloaded everything. Thanks!
Your welcome let me know how everything works out.

Made my first error on the first step... Quick notes for first timers so far::
- push UP to get in to download mode
- ODIN will not recognize your com port until you do so.
- Make sure that re-partition IS checked when you're flashing the first PIT file(the image in the pdf shows it unchecked so that's what I did)
- Whoa, totally missed when the phone turned itself off to reboot and was stuck at the Verizon logo. Unplugged phone and pulled battery then powered and pressed up to get in to recovery to wipe data/factory reset
I'll keep updating this post as I make more mistakes lol
Down went to download mode for me and your right but the image was blank without files. Just to show the version.

Once you pit the pit file and the other files the repartition should be automatically checked. Also up should go to recovery.

Yep, I'm on 4.3 now, going through saferoot... I clicked 'yes' on accept but I don't see it doing anything. Been sitting here for about 5 min. Going to unplug and re-plug and start saferoot again. I have my phone connected as a camera as suggested.
edit:: That worked in about 2 seconds
Installed recovery with safestrap, now installing stock rooted NC5 rom.
flashing last file (csc), phone rebooted and installing something and went directly in to recovery now. Just hit reboot and that worked.
humm... stuck at the red verizon logo now... been on here for a few min.
Really dumb question... I don't see any option to select slots or anything like that. I know that I can't select any different slots but it just flat out wasn't an option to pick where to install the rom.
Edit:: Well... that was weird. I was stuck at the Verizon logo so I went back in to SS Recovery and flashed HD16 and that worked (made sure to flash SU before rebooting). Everything is working now.
THANK YOU!!!

I didn't think so, I just didn't see any option mentioning slots of any sort.
3.72 only recognizes stock slot. Other slots don't work at this time

worked like a charm
worked like a charm thank you for putting this together! very appreciated.
my only comments would be the aroma installer things. i was familiar with safestrap and aroma and such but to some new android rom people might get mixed up with how to use safestrap and then get mixed up with aroma as well.
AWESOME!!!!!
ok I got the 32gb version and was worried this wouldn't work but sure enough it has and I'm back to jelly bean and my 32gbs all show up.:victory::laugh::good::cyclops:
Worked like a charm got full root an now all my root apps I have are working flawlessly also if you have the 32gb version of this phone these files work fine and all the space shows up and accesses fine.
BIG THANK YOU TO TECH GUY FOR THIS!!!!!!!111!!!!!111!!!111!11 YOU'RE AWESOME IN MY BOOK!!!!1111!!!!111!!!1!!!1
So in this method there is only a stock slot available via safestrap? Is it safe to override this slot? If I wait will there be a better method?
Sorry if these are noob questions

Might be a dumb question, but
If I have a MK2 and a NC5 nandroid backup from using safestrap can you go back and fourth between 4.3 and 4.4.2 by simply restoring your backups?
As far as I know that wouldn't be possible

Great method and instructions
Thanks for posting your instructions. Other than a few of my own mis-steps this worked perfectly. Is it now possible to try other ROM's? If so, any tips to avoid problems?
I am running hyper drive 16.1. It's important you backup the roms in safestrap. I have the rooted rom and hyper drive on the same sd card and just alternate between the two by restoring.
