[Q] Black screen after falling on the floor - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
A couple of months ago I had a similar problem like this and it cost me 165 euros. I just hope one of you got the solution for me so I don't have to pay another 165 euros to repair it. If none of you have a solution for me would you please recommend me a low-priced (used is okay) phone so I can hold on til November and get myself a new one along with the telephone contract.
So this happened today. I was at the gym in the dressing room and I put my phone out of my pocket. It fell from my pocket on the floor on one of the sides. It bounced a little bit and then fell straight on its back. Then I saw a couple of blue and green pixels on the bottom of the screen and then there was just a black screen. When it's on and I move my fingers over the menu and back key they light up. When I hit the power key the screen still stays black.
I can't send it to Samsung because I got OmniROM running on it, right?
Greetings,
wesjeex3

Warranty is void. A £5 bumper would have saved the new screen, buy a moto G.

If you completely brick it they won't be able to tell what ROM it was on. Odin can brick a phone really easy
Not recommended but its a easy problem solver and its what I'd do on a last resort. Some would say defrauding I'd say recouping some of the money we spent on an over priced phone.

I wouldn't say it was defrauding. The phone shouldn't have broke by just dropping and bouncing, unless he had dropped it multiple times. I drop my phone all the time and it hasn't broken yet.

That's the funny party. There was a bumper on my S3. The Moto G looks like a sick phone. I might get that one if it's not fixed.

The first time it fell it was broken instantly. After it got repaired it never fell so today was the first time it fell after the new screen. It has fallen 2 times and got broken twice. You can call it bad luck I guess.
I can buy a Galaxy Nexus for 100 euros. Is that worth it or shall I just go with the moto G?

I'd do that because it breaking twice after dropping it twice is ridiculous. I bet this has happened to other owners.

Best Buy's Black Tie Insurance No longer has "3 Lemon" clause

Short story: Best Buy no longer allows "3 lemons = new phone". One of the best benefits of their insurance plan is gone...
Long story:
About 2 months ago. My girlfriend decided she wanted her latest Evo 4G (already a refurb from Best Buy.) turned in for another because of the screen separation issue that started to creep up slowly. We took it in under our Black Tie Insurance plan which, at that point, we loved. showed them the issue, got it shipped off. Few days later, got one in return. As soon as I saw the phone, I could tell this one was having the same issue I just returned the other phone for. I instantly told them that this one was going to do the same thing and wanted it returned, before even activating it. They said OK, shipped back again. (2 times now.) few days later, the other comes in. I check the screen...and **** you not, screen was doing the exact same thing. I had written down the previous serial just to make sure they weren't 'effing with me. nope, they didn't match. So, I show them, they are wishy washy about it but take it back and left huge notes in capital letters "SCREEN COMING UP, DO NOT SEND ONE LIKE THIS". So, we wait again. (3 phone.) Few days later, get the call. Go in, look at phone... and as SOON as she opens the box, without even taking off the protective film I could tell it was screwed up. Not only was the bottom left hand corner coming up, like all the others. The whole bottom half of the phone was coming off. I verbally digressed "Are you ****ting me?" showed them the phone and they instantly go "Oh wow." it was that bad. I ask about the new phone policy and how I've had to ship these out 3 times, this being the forth. They state "We don't get new evo's anymore" I go "That's fine, a phone of equal value will work. She says she wouldn't mind a Design 4G, looking over specs, I personally feel it comes out as less than equal value, but she's fine with it. They state they don't have the policy anymore and it was removed at the beginning of the year. I, rather upset, state I've been dealing with this crap since November and just because I missed 3 crappy refurbs before their cut off shouldn't mean I have to suffer. Her suggestion? try Sprint. yeah. it's past 1 year, so that's a laughable suggestion... also, given that I'm paying you for insurance!. I asked to speak to the manager who suggested the same thing!. try sprint or keeping spinning the roulette wheel for a decent refurb. My only real option was the roulette wheel. This time, the Manager left notes, put a ticker on the glass of the phone with a huge ARROW pointing to the bottom of the phone that read "DO NOT SEND ANOTHER LIKE THIS EVER." Then, on the paperwork, stated my many attempts, how disappointed he was and how this next one better be checked multiple times before being shipped.
So, we picked up her phone tonight... all "seems" OK so far, guess I get to wait and see if the screen starts coming up or not.
I love how they just want to have a green light to do a sloppy job and not get hit with the consequence of it.
I personally will never again buy their insurance, after one of my old phones ended spending 3 trips and 5 months in their repair center ...

They are not good for support on **** I refuse to get insurance or black tie for almost any of their stuff. Their policies are awful and apparently they don't notify you of change which should be illegal

Well if they aren't going to give you a brand new phone, just keep sending the broken ones back and keep trying. Eventually they will realize it's costing them more in shipping costs than it would to just give you a new phone. Maybe try going to another Best Buy as well.
And I know exactly what you are talking about. I made a claim with Asurion in December, and it took 4 refurb evo's, that were all bad, and then they finally gave me a new 3D. The first two had screen separation, with one of them the glass was actually completely separated, like I could take my finger and lift the entire glass off the phone. The other two both had a broken vibrator out of the box, and both of them had two of the four touch button lights that weren't lighting up at all. I really can't believe they actually ship these phones out to people like this without a simple look-over to find issues like this.
Oh, how I love Sprint's TEP. My phones get fixed or replaced, no questions asked.
Does the HTC warranty start over with the "new" device you received? I mean it's a new to you device replaced under a repair, so I was just curious?

Last year when Sprint finally gave me a new Evo after 5 bad refurbs, they told me the warranty would be 90 days OR the remainder of the 1 year from the original phone purchase date, whichever comes first.

I know at sprint sometimes is a game of chance on refurbished units back on the EVO days I had to swap my 2month old phone out due to blue spots in the screen they wouldn't fix it. Lol pain dealing with refurbished units sometimes you get lucky other times it is a gamble .
Lol I would rather keep my original phone and just repair it my self lol.
lol, im glad this post is here because i actually have some clarification and this applies to me.
so i dropped my 3vo in water the other day for a split second, and it dried out just fine. this was about 2 weeks ago. i wasnt having issues at all until yesterday. apparently the digitizer is screwed so being an employee at best buy, i knew i had coverage and i bought the BTP out right so i had plenty of replacements. i took it in, and my buddy took a look at it and he confirmed the screen was wonky. but then he said it was rooted, and that they dont accept that. so of course i went outside and smahed the phones screen to bits to where both the inner and outer layer of the screen were shattered and you couldnt see the screen at all.
anyways, what i am getting at...
if the phone has water damage, or any type of replacement issues they pretty much rip the phone out and the only thing brand new you get back is the shell of the phone and they replace whatever is messed up.
but if the phone screen is completely shattered it is a instant replacement with a new phone, which is good because it "shouldnt" be a refurb. this is a new policy that is actually inside info.

Wait, can you tell me some about TEP's current policies? I chose bestbuy but I'm probably going to switch when I get my new phone. Last time I called about TEP was 3 years ago, so...
-Does TEP still charge $100 for broken phones?
-Does TEP give new or refurbished phones?
-If refurbished, is it at the store or does it take 20 years to arrive?
-With TEP, do they replace it no questions asked?
I knew bestbuy's prices were jacked up like **** but now the insurance... really...
Thanks

As far as I know they only charge the fee if there is physical damage, water damage, or if it lost or stolen. If you take the phone to a corporate store with a repair center they will fix it for free and if it cannot be fixed then it is replaced with a refurbished phone. Personally I used to work for both companies and I think that TEP is much better than best buy's insurance policy.

Cracked Screen... Suggestions?

So, I got a really bad luck. My phone never fall on the street when I use the case; just when I take off the case, it fell down and cracked my screen on the bottom right near the Search button. It's still functional and the crack is not really bad, just kind of annoying when I realized that there's a crack there (not that noticeable for me, literally only a small piece of the screen on bottom right that got cracked)
So, I am just looking through my options here. I left my phone in stock condition because I don't want to void the warranty; but now that it's cracked, ....
Should I just root my phone, play with it, and deal with the small crack?
Or, if I left it in stock condition and change the glass, will I be able to claim warranty (in case anything happen)?
Or should I just get a new phone on CL? (like HTC One S maybe )
Any suggestion is welcomed

All depends on how much work you want to do and/or money you want to spend.
If you replace the screen yourself you'd have to remove "void" stickers and you know what that means as far as warranties go.
SOOOOO...
1) If you have insurance, you can replace the entire phone for $130.
2) If you don't have insurance, you can replace the screen yourself since it wouldn't matter if you void the warranty. You can buy a screen from eBay for about $30 or so.
Screen: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Digitizer-T...949?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c630ce6e5
Screen replacement video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nA4JToM5uxA
Personally: My screen cracked and I've toyed with the idea of replacing the screen myself. Since I have insurance and I replace my phones a lot I didn't want to void my warranty so I decided to go through Asurion. For $130 I received a new phone, new casing, new battery and a new charger. Basically, I now have double of everything (except for phone since I had to return the cracked one).
Breakdown:
Per T-mobile's site:
Battery = $30
Charger = $15
Battery Cover = $20 (per ebay)
Total = $65 in Accessories
Cost for new phone = $65
Doing the replacement I got about $65 worth of accessories on top of a new phone for $65. Not too bad compared to just buying a new phone.
Bottom line, it all depends on you and what you're willing to do/spend. Don't worry about rooting until you make the decision to keep or replace your current phone.

OMG . i didn't know replacing the screen myself will void the warranty... -_-" plus after looking at the video for 2 mins. i will decline to the idea of replacing it myself
I bought the phone off CL about 2 months ago (FOR $230 !! ); so, I don't think it has any insurance. Can I still get an insurance at this point?
If I can't, I guess I will either live with it; or sell it and get another phone
Thanks for the reply!! Those info really helps me

It never hurts to try to add insurance. The worst they can say is no.
Call HTC its 145 to have the screen replaced and they will extend the warranty out for a yr.

Really? So they're willing to change my cracked screen and add another year of warranty? I bought the phone off CL so there's no insurance, and i thought warranty normally doesn't cover this kind of damage.
Although after usibg the phone for a couple days, i realized that he crack is really not bad at all... Just get annoying sometimes. Lol.

Dude I'm there wth u! Got my water damage amaze (no warranty ) off CL. Phone worked great til I dropped it. With red water damage mark and cracked screen I had nothing to lose so I took it apart. I have to say its the easiest phone I ever worked on. Just so u know the digitizer is glued to the LCD so getting em apart is the tricky part. If you have the $130 or even $145 option available that's the way to go. The cheapest I've seen the pre assembled digitizer/LCD part is $115 so if you decide to take yours apart be careful separating digi from lcd ! You will need hair dryer.

Just wondering... is the replacement brand new or refurb? The crack wasn't that bad imo. So, getting a refurb doesn't sound like a very good idea to me (it might have some functionality problems).
Here is the pic of the crack on the phone... Since I bought the phone from CL for 230, paying extra 145 doesn't sound too good for me (it's 70% of the phone price in my case!!!). Anyway, thanks for the replies
They were supposed to replace the screen in my phone, but a few days after I paid for it htc called me and said they didn't have any parts and asked if I'd be Ok with a new unit.. Or wait like 3 weeks for parts... So i got a new unit. But they shipped only the phone. On a side note I had a problem a couple weeks ago with the aluminum coming off from around the camera, called htc explained the problem. They asked what color I wanted, told them white. Got the new back opened it was black, called htc told them they shipped me a white one and told me to keep the black one... Sweet. I'm in the middle of a project for my gf, painting the aluminum on the original baxk green for her, it was relatively easy to take apart the back. Stay tuned for pics coming soon....

Hmm by phone only you mean they only give you the phone without everything else right? That sounds like a refurb replacement to me...
Anyhow, thanks for the reply. I think I will just use my phone as is and root it someday. I am starting to get used to that small crack. lol
So on the 200th time I droped my Amaze, the screen cracked. I have Asurion insurance and filed a claim online and they are sending me another Amaze (for $130). This is fine because I like the phone, my contract is up and I plan to get another phone once I find something I like (most phones out now dont seem like much of an upgrade). I plan to keep the replacement Amaze as a backup and quit paying for the insurance. My question is: do I just need to send the phone back, i.e. can I keep the battery as a spare? Also, I am rooted and S-off running CM10. I dont plan to do anything to return the phone to stock. Is this a bad idea or does it not matter?

So my sweet OG is now on its way back to LG In fort worth for repair lets see how much its gonna cost and how long it takes ill update this thread with the Info i recieve from lg so if anyone else faces an accidental break/shatter of the back glass they will know what Lg has to say about it and what they charge to fix
The back glass on these phones is notoriously sensitive. I have a small crack going through the whole phone on the back. The other day I dropped it from my chair on to the carpet in my room and that put a hairline crack all across the front now. This is a major concern for these phones as the phone becomes totally unresponsive when the front glass cracks. I have been using phones without a case for years with never any problems and a carpet drop from 2 feet should not damage your phone like this.
yeah a carpet fall shouldent do damage like that i read over in the international version forum that the international version back glass cracked from temperture change going from hot to cold mine was in my pocket and somehow broke around the speaker then the more i used it the worse it got untill yesterday when i took it out and a small sliver of glass actually stuck in my finger so this morning i sent it back to LG
Sorry to hear that....Now my phone went back into Bumper case after seeing this post. Looks and feels horrible but hey.. don't want a broken glass.
That looks like either stress around the speaker cutout or spontaneous shattering.
It's an uncommon but well enough known phenomenon in tempered glasses (of which gorilla glass is).

I am Hoping Lg will Look at the phone and see that there is absolutly no physical damage exept the glass its very very obvious the phone was not dropped and has not a single mark on the bezel but i doubt they are gonna fix it without it costing me an arm and possibly 2 legs
i will be buying the otterbox case as soon as i hear back from lg about what there gonna do

It might not be your case but sometimes... when we have the phone in our pocket... and while walking or doing something your leg (thigh area) might have hit something..Like corner of a table or it can be anything. b'cos it happens unconsciously you will not notice till you actually pull it out later and :crying: ... It happened to me once, From then on.. I always keep my phone screen(front) facing inside (towards body). But as this phone as double glass we are out of luck.
I hated when Nexus 4 and this phone came up with this idea of having glass back... even after knowing its a bad idea. e.g. Iphone 4 or 4s... everyone knew someone(friend or friends friend) with Iphone broken their glass at-least once.

that might very well be the case i might have run into something. But either way i dont mind paying to get it repaired as long as its reasonable ya know i just dont wanna be gouged or told that its not repairable kind of crap ya know im hoping it will all play out
Strange... Mine fell 6 feet onto our concrete kitchen floor inside its att body glove case and nothing happened to mine, seriously.
Any extreme temperature change or sudden jarring movements?

Cracked Screen

hard to believe but I've finally cracked (unintentionally) the screen on a phone, and of course it had to be the one I bought off contract for an absurd price. however I purchased the insurance through best buy for the first time in my life too, so clearly I am pyschic. If you'd like your future read, let me know.
Hopefully the fact that I am unlocked wont cause issue with them repairing or replacing the phone. I'm hoping they just hand me a whole new device instead of just replacing the glass. I've had the phone since day one and can remember several instances of drops at varying heights. and a few I cant remember but I'm sure happened. Yesterdays was by far the shortest fall though, slid out of my pocket while crouching and fell about 7 inches to stamped concrete. I actually didnt even notice the crack bc its so thin until my buddy pointed it out. I guess it may be time to consider a case for it
and thats my story
It won't be new. Best buy always does cln

They will give you another device, it will just be a Certified Like New. They don't just repair the screen.

Do you think my G2 is cursed? or did i just have bad luck

Ok i have attacked 2 photots to this post of the 1st and 2nd i have cracked my G2's screen the 1st time was in october and the second time today/ :crying: the 1st time my g2 was naked with no case and the second time it had a Beyond Cell Tri-shield case on it. why i think it may be cured is how it cracked in the same corner as last time. LOL

Don't worry broke my black G2 screen too, bottom left corner, fell in bathroom. Lol phone actually said detected damaged screen and showed menu for alternate controls . Eventually repair was free because Gophermods which sucks (replaced screen 4 times over one month), didn't do it properly and got intermittent grey lines. Eventually got a white one with refund money. Ironically original now works fine after screen lifted off from housing relieving pressure on ribbon cable inside.
What happened in your case, how did you drop and get repaired?

my case is fine, i woke up because my phone when off at 9am i went to put it down and it slid off my nightstand and i picked it up not even thinking about it, then when i got up went to go use it and it would not unlock so i restarted thinking it froze or something then turn it back on a resized it was cracked when it did not respond, and it was hard to see the crack with screen protector on. organically i took it to CPR: cell phone repair cost me $200 call them back to day and asked what they could do for me, guy said it would be $200 so i screen F**K you and hung up i, im going to just change it my self. i was hesitant back in october because there we no guides on line but now there are.

Lol. I don't get how it broke with a case. Just unlucky I guess. I have a thin diztronic case on and its been safe so far. Also if you look around for a cell phone shop they'll repair it for around 65-100 dollars depending on if they have the piece or not. I work part time at one and they charge 65 for iPhone repairs because they have plenty off screens fir it but they charge 100 for phones they need to order a screen for.
If u have the tools it's easy to do yourself. Just watch a YouTube video and follow along step by step. It's actually what we do at the store with phones we haven't done before

I hear LG will do it for about $140 according to another xda member, when I called LG they refused to give me a quote unless I mailed them my phone. Looking back I should have gotten it repaired by LG. Gophermods was $239.xx after taxes used that refund plus $80 more for a new one White this time on eBay.

I'm sure that's how the Gopermods guy repaired mine. I warned him to be careful about the ribbon cable the third time he replaced my screen, it's very sensitive. He repaired it a fourth time again got grey lines/imprint of previous activities. He didn't glue the screen properly each time. It eventually peeled off the housing after he offered refund and since pressure disappeared it works fine as long as it's not completely in the housing. They really screwed it up big time. I knew more about repairing it than he did. I mean he was nice and took my advice but was just incompetent. The day I got my refund a lady with a "repaired" iPad screen came back a second time because it didn't respond in some corners.... shows you how bad the company is. They are learning/schooling on our stuff lol.

well i think in the future im just going to put a Verizon insurance coverage on my phone. look at it this way the insurance is $10 a mouth and with a two year contract im going to be spending $240, and could break the phone over and over and just get it replaced.
Yeah that's probably best.
called taquej
Well, it's just probably bad luck. With these devices, you just gotta be careful and not drop them. More likely than not, they will break when dropped. Also, I can't help but notice the amount if fingerprints on the screen (and probably the back). I suggest you wipe them more often to prevent the accumulation of fingerprints (and oils).

That's why I got a white one second time, harder to see fingerprints and smudges.
judging by the smudges you probably shouldn be handling anything of value when busy with lube
Or better buy a casing that is easy to handle. Not easily drop when sweaty or oily. A casing that worth a price.
