[Q] tethering problem - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, i used to do it just fine but its few days
my pc doesn't have wi-fi so i connect to wi-fi with my phone and tether it to pc using usb
i ran speed test and it gives me 1.28mbps in pc and 2.7mbps in phone ! (sometimes 0.28mbps in pc !)
i play team fortress 2 on my pc fine, no lags, but sometimes ( so often) i get connection problem auto dc in 30 seconds which ends always EXACTLY at 20.0 ! sounds weird!

What service / carrier? Are you using the built-in USB tethering or another app? Are you rooted? Stock or custom rom?

also, the weird thing is it happens EXACTLY every 20 seconds for EXactly 10 seconds !

anyone ?
EDIT: sorry it have been only a day, it felt like 3 days ! i thought i posted the last thing 3 days ago !

You might have to use another app that hides your activities such as PDANet or Clockwork Tether. Unfortunately though they do have free versions, they have limitations that might get annoying if you don't pay for the premium service. Another option would be a custom rom that has the tethering provisions removed already. Oh yea, if you are still on the stock rom, check for some kind of tetheringprovision.apk in /system/app. If there is anything like that in there, if you freeze it or rename it, that might help as well. Just hard to be more concrete with suggestions as carriers can have their own ways to trip up tethering usage vs others and it might just be a glitch, or they have something set up to make this a pain.

Try PdaNet+. There's a free version you can try to see if everything works. It times out after about 10 minutes and you have to reconnect. To connect via USB it requires a companion program to be installed on your PC. Try it a bunch of times and see if you can replicate the problem. If not, go ahead and pay $8 for the key to unlock the full version, which doesn't time out. If the problem persists, I'd have to guess that it's an issue with your carrier. Or it could be an issue with another app or mod that you're using that is causing an issue.

Thanks , it stoped! Didn't make any change!
Will check these of it came back!
Also it's around my exams and I don't have time check it thanks anyway

having quite a serious issue with the vibrant wifi

I have this issue with wifi. It's that when I'm at home, it won't connect at all to my wifi all I get is obtaining address and eventually unsuccesful, yet occasionally it does work. Then, when using other wifis, turning on wifi does make it connect and show the icon in the notification bar, but still, it won't always work. I try to get into the market but it says no network or something like that. Tried most web browsers, nothing works too. What can I do? My phone is rooted and flashed with bionix fusion rom, evn though this problem sometimes happened even with stock firmware, rooted and not rooted. What can I do? Can't really get a replacement because i bought it from overseas. HELP!!

Some routers are a tad dodgy, so it may not be the phone at all. Since we dont know what type of router or what sort of connection environment your in (how many wifi connections it's handling, etc...) it's hard to say. Still it's easier to replace a $30 router than it is a several hundred $$$ phone.
I said in the post itself that I tried more than one wifi aka router, most of them connected to a laptop and my phone at a certain time. Therefore I doubt the issue is the router. I think it's a bug. Is there no fix for this?
This is kind of a shot in the dark, but have you tried putting the phone in Airplane mode and then restarting the Wi-Fi? I've found that the cell data connection can sometimes interfere with my Wi-Fi.

I would put my money on the router, I have not seen anyone else complain about this who is running bionix. So a bug within bionix, I'm going to say no.
HOWEVER!!!!!! I had the same problem for a while. I have AT&T uverse and there 2WIRE router is total crap... I had the same exact problems as you PLUS it would not connect to my mac mini for more then a few seconds. I hooked up an older router I had laying around and BAM no more issues.
I got the same problem, but my phone is not rooted or flashed. Must be a system/software problem.

Veoh.com question

Hey guys first time poster long time reader. Before I begin I just wanted to thank you all for the help and support with the ins and outs of the android OS.
Now that that is out of the way, I had a question in regards to Veoh.com and some issues I am having with it. I have Kaos Froyo v39, and I use Dolphin browser mini. When I change my useragent to iPhone and I go on Veoh it works okay for a little bit, and then it either stops loading videos or gives me an error message saying 'this video cannot be played' is there a fix for this? Am I doing something wrong?

Hi! Welcome. Is this over 3G or Wifi, or have you tried both?
Either way, this is safe to try: Download "APN OnOff" from the market. Launch it and choose "Show APN list" in the middle of the screen. Press Menu and choose "Reset to default". You may or may not need to perform a reboot to see if this helps. Try it without first.
This used to help me with restoring tethering when it stopped working.
A longer method to possibly achieve the same thing, but may be worth a try if the first method doesn't work:
Perform a nandroid and flash a stock-like ROM such as xtrSENSE (what I would recommend). You only have to use it long enough to download "APN Backup & Restore" off the market. Run it and choose "Backup APNs", you can name it whatever makes sense to you such as "xtrSENSE stock APN.xml", otherwise it just uses the current date and time.
Nandroid back to KaosFroyo and install "APN Backup & Restore" again. This time choose "Restore APNs" and restore the one you backed up from xtrSENSE. Again try it without a reboot first but if it doesn't work try a reboot.
You can do this as often as you like to see if this helps with any data trouble. I'm not positive if it helps with WIFI at all; I know it helps with 3G Data.
Please let us know if any of this helps or not.
Thank you so much, its working now. Only issue now is that the bar in the program is stuck in the off position, and when I click on it to turn it back on it just goes into the settings. My connections are still fine as you can see, should I be worried?
On an unrelated note, which tethering Rom did you use? I would love to tether my phone, but the threads I have read make it seem like a daunting process to me.

Bar in which program? APN OnOff? As long as everything's working I wouldn't worry about it since I don't use that button; I think I've noticed that before. A reboot would probably restore it, in my experience.
I've tethered under every ROM but any GingerBread one, now. Started with xtrsense, found that it was marginally more reliable under Froyo so GB would probably be good too. What was better about 2.2+ tethering was how fast the tethering connection would be made, before it took a minute or two for the computer to recognize it; now down to less than 30 seconds.
I don't recommend the old wired or wireless tether for root under 2.2+, but I haven't tried them in a while. 2.2+ and CM6+ have their own native tethering. CM6.1's notification power widgets have a WIFI tether one which connects the fastest. Free Tethering Widget off the market will also give you a widget for that and/or USB tethering, which is built into 2.2+ itself but for some reason CM doesn't include a notification power widget for.
Wireless tethering eats your battery like crazy plus made the phone extra hot, but you have to understand that it was my only home internet until a month ago since last August. I kept the battery cover off and had a fan on it, but you don't have to do that for just occasional tethering. I also had it plugged in to charge constantly; I just liked how fast wireless connected.
Wired tethering also uses battery faster and makes it warmer, just not nearly as fast or warm as wireless.
Occasionally 3G would stop and I'd have to turn off tethering and do the steps in my other post to get it going again. Most of the time a reboot after doing APN OnOff made tethering last longer.
If you know how to install drivers with Device Manager (assuming you're on Windows), or you don't mind learning I would get the latest drivers from http://htc.developers.comhttp://developer.htc.com/ if I remember correctly.
I'm on my phone at the moment, I'll check later. The driver package is all the way at the bottom of the list, the last one.
Otherwise just install HTCSync for the Eris and that'll install older drivers.

Okay so let me get this straight... I have tethering on my Froyo 2.2 already and I just need to grab a widget in order to activate it? What is the driver for? I was under the assumption that my phone would become a "hotspot" so I could set it up to an Xbox PS3 etc. Do I need to download the driver in order to tether to the computer? If so, how would I be able to use a wired tether to something like a PS3? I am a pretty quick learner on the whole concept of rooting and flashing Roms, but I am a newb so I appreciate your time and patience.

If you're running a recent enough version of a ROM based on CM6.x (6.1 or 6.2?), then if you enable the tethering widget in the notification menu power buttons (the buttons at the top), then you'd don't need anything else to WIFI tether.
You can do USB tethering by going into the stock settings, but it's such a PITA to do it there it's easier to do it by using that widget I mentioned, which also handles Froyo's WIFI tethering as well. So if you're never going to do USB tethering, you don't need any other drivers (called RDNIS drivers) and you don't need that widget off the market.
If you do ever plan on wire tether, then you will need to install some RDNIS drivers (the link I gave you) unless you've already installed HTCSync, since that includes both the regular and the RDNIS drivers. I have no idea if you can wire tether to a PS3 since in Windows you need to install a driver, but you can try it and let us know, or search for other people who wanted to do the same thing. You should be able to WIFI tether, however.
No problem, I'm glad you pick things up quickly, makes it that much easier. And you're welcome!
So help me - what bar in the program were you talking about?
On APN on /off, when I reset the settings I saw a bar on the main screen highlighted on. I turned it off thinking I should rest it. I couldn't toggle it back on, bit data was still working and I did a reboot just in case. It was nothing major thankfully.

You were correct in your end assessment that it shouldn't be anything to worry about, that APN switch in the middle of the screen. I've had mixed results with it in my observations, so I don't even touch it although as you noticed it doesn't seem to hurt anything.
Thanks for verifying; that was the only thing I could imagine you might be talking about!

Automatic WiFi/3G data connection switching on 2.2 ROMs

While I was running the Stock SE 2.1 .435 release (rooted of course) my X10 was capable of automatically switching between the GSM data connection to any of my configured Wifi networks (at work and at home) without any user interaction.
I have a friend with a Motorola Milestone on 2.1 with this same behaviour.
Every 2.2 ROM I have loaded seems to have a problem with regards to this feature. Basically I have to perform a manual switch but here are two of the behaviours I have noticed.
On FreeX10 the SSID basically becomes disabled. If I am at home and connected to my home network and leave the cell area my 3G network becomes established and everything is fine. Once I get back home within the cell area of my WiFi network the WiFi connection does not become active. Instead I have to go into Wireless Settings and that's when I see it is disabled. Long press the SSID and choosing Connect gets me connected.
On [Cyanogen6.1.3]gingerbread[v01] the SSID does not get disabled but rather it continuously fails. Same use case as above except when I go into Wireless Settings I see the SSID "Connecting" and then failing and entering the "Remembered" state.
My friend with the Milestone recently upgraded to 2.2 and will test this scenario to see if it is inherent to 2.2.
My question is, would it be possible to take the 2.1 Wifi component and use that in the 2.2 ROMs?
It would be great this could get fixed, same problem is with the gingerbread roms.
Like u said, it doesn't even help when switching WiFi off/on again using my WiFi widget. U have to manually press connect on your specific WiFi connection.
Pain in the ass!
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I have the same problems, tried both roms and ended up sticking with Cyanogen, simply because it was less of a pain re wifi but i still have reconnection problems when leaving my house. The answer is to manually turn off wifi then leave, then reengage wifi manually when i return. A pain but, a small one
Agreed. Toggling the power does not help.
If it is possible to take the WiFi component (for lack of a better word) from another build I strongly suggest considering .435 because it worked phenominally under various conditions.
yea my wifi doesn't seem to work well either with the FreeX10 rom
I assume you already tried Blade Wifi Fix? If not, do so.
The Blade fix was included in the CM ROM I installed. It looks like all it did was power cycle the wifi which as already stated doesn't help.

Try to delete included BladeWifiFix and reboot test again and if still not working install BladeWifiFix new from Market and test again.

there where issues of WIFI NOT CONNECTING , no problems of switching though as u stated. so i installed blade wifi and everything was well.

I know what it is intended to do but I was wondering how it was doing it. being a technical person I don't like the shotgun approach because the end results are very hard to interpret if you don't know what you are actually doing
but I digress I have installed it and I will be testing as soon as I get home

hi,
after reading this i though ...
me and wolf include blade wifi on our roms.
for me i don`t have any issue regarding wifi on my rom. i get out of home with wifi connected do a 1 hour trip to my work and when i get there wifi pick signal without any issue.
but......
i don`t check right away, so.
like i said me and wolf we include blade wifi and do some changes regarding build.prop to save some battery. one of the most consumer of battery is the wifi.
on SE roms search for wifi every 15 seconds. on mine i change that to 380 sec and wolf around 200 (i think) so...could this be the cause of ????
i personally don`t believe removing blade will do any difference but...maybe those who had this issues try to change build.prop to 15sec ?
well we might be onto something...after installing Blade I was able to switch but I did not time it...seems to have taken quite some time though. I'll time it next time but I'm sure since it will vary because it looks like it runs a timer and I don't know what the details are.
I wonder if Z made the same changes to build.prop as you guys have. I would be interested in testing without this change.
Also, it would be great to know what Blade actually does. I wonder if it circumvents the changes you made to the intervals in build.prop.
Also, any idea as to whether we can use the WiFi component from the .435 build in these ROMs?
Ren,
Is it possible to go in and change the value in build.prop:
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=
Without reloading the ROM?

Yes.
Through root explorer. Just make sure you check all boxes on permitions and after that reboot.

OK. I've been watching what Blade does and all it seems to do is reinitialize the wifi. Seems overkill so I found this:
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/wifi/WifiConfiguration.Status.html
I want to write an app that will monitor configured networks and set their status to Enabled.
The challenge for me is that I've never developed an app before but I have the SDK installed and it recognized my x10 so I'm good to go. Ill try to get as far as I can but I will need some help. Is there anyone interested in offering themselves as a resource if/when I need some help?

[Q] Hotspot not working CM7.1

Hi!
I've read through different posts, but I haven't got the answer to my question, which is:
I connect through CM7.1s WiFi tethering and I get internet access on my computer, but just a couple of minutes later it stops working (i.e the computer no longer connects, doesn't find hotspot), though the phone still tells me tethering is active. Disabling doesn't work, phone darkens the option all together, though still says it's active. Only reboot makes it idle again.
Known issue? Have I done something wrong? No problems at all with USB-teethering.
Thanks!
PS.
Running CM7.1 Stable
Same here
Has someone got an answer? Has it been fixed in CM 7.2 or later?
It's irritating.. sometimes it works for 2mins other times for 30mins. When it stops you have to restart the phone because it cannot disable. The Checkbox is just disabled and when I disconnect while it's working, it is disabled almost immediately. I've even left it over night to "disable" just to see what happens. Nothing... It's a pity. Such a great mod with such a great drawback... I hope it gets fixed!
Any help, advice, tips, etc appreciated! :good:

Can't find any WiFi networks when searching

Hi there!
So, I have a little problem with my second phone. The problem now is that I can't find any WiFi networks when I search for one. I have always had connection here home, and it works fine on my XS.
I don't want to restore or flash anything because the reason I need WiFi is to back up the bookmarks I got on the Dolphin Browser that is installed on the phone.
I also want to say that I don't have any SIM-card in the phone because I'm using that one in my XS, but that should not affect WiFi as far as I know.
I'm running Android 2.3.3 and baseband 2.1.71.
So what could the problem be?
Thanks in advance!
What rom have you installed, if so, do you have the right kernel and wifi modules? any details of what you have installed?
Are other pc's or mobiles at home able to perform a search for wifi networks and see the SSID of the router?
Upps.. sorry for leak of info.
I'm running stock ROM. Yeah, I have the right kernel and WiFi modules. The phone have worked well before.
Yes. This phone is the only one who can't find any WiFi networks. It sucks! Never had this issue before.
I am having the same issue. Just started the other day. My phone will not find a wifi network unless it is sitting next to the router. If I am over 5 feet away it just says searching and not in range.
Any thoughts?
Okay, just stood 1 meter from the router, still it didn't find any wifi connections!
This sucks!
When you go to wifi settings and activate it, does the tick apply to the box(enabled) or does not do anything?
It doesn't sound nice. if you are sure that you are running Sony ericsson original software (no custom roms, kernel and else) then try to do a factory reset from the menu, if it doesn't do anything then use SEUS and reinstall the software.
This will prove that this is either or not a hardware fault. It is the best way to check. If it still doesn't work after SEUS reinstall, then it is definitely a fault. If it fixes it then congrats..
If it's a custom rom from here then forget seus and flash the rom again.
Screenshots are welcome if you have..(wifi settings, system info..)
Good luck
The tick apply to the box yes.
Okay, so I connected it to my PC and ran Update Service and did a fresh reinstall of the software. Still the same problem. Can't find any WiFi connections
Well you already know the answer..
Yeah I do.. Think I'm going back to the store with it and get it fixed. Also have some reboots problem that may be related to this..
Thanks for answer.
If you only need your bookmarks just put sim from XS in X10 and turn on and backup info and replace sim in XS.
EDIT: do you have unlocked bootloader? If yes u can try relocking it.

hello mister, I have a same issue with you.
my LWW cannot find a network althought I was sitting in front of the router and it says not in range.
but sometimes it can works well, but it often cannot work
still searching for the solutions
Think its the wifi antenna thats failing.
First I couldnt find any WiFi networks. I had it off for a few weeks (got my Xperia S xD) and when I tried it, it worked well.
So its not easy to find the solution for this.. It sounds like a hardware issue
