Rooting Verizon Note II (4.3 Stock) - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hey guys,
so I had rooted my Note II quite a while back with CM 11 I believe, and all worked well except my GPS didn't work. After every possible fix I just said screw it and went months with no GPS. I finally got sick of it and decided to just start fresh and went back to stock 4.1. My idiot self though did the Verizon updates all the way to 4.3....
I've been reading around and rooting my phone now that it's on 4.3 seems pretty difficult - is there any for sure methods yet so I can root it and if I decide to, flash a ROM?
It's 4.3 currently and the kernel is: 3.0.31
Thanks guys

saferoot is easy and will work if you are running stock MJ9.

I found "SafeStrap": http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2704992
Is this what you're referring to, otherwise, mind pointing me in the direction of "SafeRoot"? Not able to find it.
I tried SafeStrap but after installing and running it on my phone, everything is disabled and it says "State: Not Rooted".

search for saferoot. probably show up in the gs 3 forums. works like a champ once you get past getting the drivers right.

No luck unfortunately
It started sending the files and then said:
Your kernel is patched!
This device is not supported.
Then it cleans phone up and ends.
If needed, here's the info on the phone i'm running:
Model: SCH-I605
Android Version: 4.3 (Un-rooted)
Kernel Version: 3.0.31: [email protected]#1
Build Number: JSS15J.I605VRUAND3

@Byrne3155,
Because you're on very latest build (VRUAND3), saferoot will not work.
Other users are reporting that they successfully used ODIN to restore their phone to the 4.3/MJ9 build....which saferoot does work for. (See this thread.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2752360 ).

I'm just hitting bad luck apparently. I utilized Odin and followed: Section 1b: How to return to stock 4.X Jelly Bean coming from any rom with Odin
It worked, I confirmed my build is now MJ9:
JSS15J.I605VRUEMJ9
So I downloaded the SafeStrap from this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2693131), allowed Unknown source installs, installed it, opened it, and just like before everything is disabled:
State: Not Rooted
Safe system: Not Active

@Byrne3155,
Good job with restoring back to MJ9.
You are confusing safestrap and saferoot---they sound similar but are totally different. safeStrap won't help you gain root access because it's not used to root a phone....it is used to help someone load a custom Rom After gaining root.
You will need to use safeRoot to gain root access. Here's the link to saferoot-- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48392009
I would really encourage you to do more reading and really learn the differences between saferoot and safestrap before you do a lot more to your phone. I'd hate to hear you report back later that you ended up bricking your phone.
Good luck if you decide to continue with your rooting adventures .

Yikes, sorry about that I'm an idiot ha. I got the two mixed you're right.
I'm fairly comfortable with rooting and the whole process, but the VZW Note II definitely played tough since I made the error of using the OTA updates all the day zzz.
I'll work on this again later making sure I use correct tool this time (saferoot).
Thanks again

get titanium backup and freeze/backup+uninstall SDM that will keep updates from happening. (only for stock rom, once you install a rom it won't be a problem all roms have SDM disabled by default)
you can now flash any touchwiz rom however unless your cwm is loki'd you can't flash aosp roms (such as cyanogen mod, MIUI, aokp...)
so basically if you are not lokied you can flash only roms on the android development board if you ARE lokied you can flash those AND the ones in the ORIGINAL android development board.

If you are already on mj7 right now you have no root. Hasn't been cracked. If you are on a previous version then there are root guides in android dev. And a way to keep root as you flash up to latest version.

Head over to this thread -- very good tutorial that I followed this morning. It worked for me, and I am running the MJ7 fully rooted now.
I have run into one problem though -- and it may be something that has been solved but I haven't found it yet. I cannot get Safestrap to install recovery because the MJ7 "update.zip" that I installed implements SELinux and Samsung has a security policy set that keeps blocking Safestrap's attempt to install recovery.
I have no doubt that someone has -- or will -- figure out how to defeat that, though.
I'm at work and haven't had a chance to look at the video but is this root from stock? Or from 4.2.2 previous root.

The method starts you off by re-flashing factory stock (no-wipe) MI1, then using the Root de la Vega method to gain root but not substantially change any system files. Then you have to have SuperSU Pro, because you have to enable it's "Survival" mode to keep root -- it's $2.49 on the Play store. Be forewarned -- OTA RootKeeper isn't updated for 4.3, so it won't do the job. Once you have Pro's "Survival" mode enabled, you have to swap out one file in /system/bin with the one listed in the guide.
Once you do those things, you can either take the OTA as normal, or use adb to sideload it if you have the "update.zip" file saved. When it reboots after update, you will be in 4.3.3 MJ7 fully rooted. I did it this morning, and found out that you want to follow ALL the steps rather than shortcut since you're already rooted. The update checks the SHA1.digest of a LOT of files, and if you have frozen or uninstalled any of them in Titanium (for example) it does change the SHA1.digest of the file. I ran into the problem because I had FWUpdate.apk uninstalled, then reinstalled to get the OTA -- but the update failed the first time because FWUpdate.apk had changed. So, after starting again (at step 1 this time), everything went through slicker than snot on a doorknob.
Looks as though you have to be rooted to begin with. Because it says KEEP your root. We are trying to root from stock.

Nope -- hasn't been achieved yet. I was lucky that my phone came with ME7; I rooted it then and disabled updates until I saw that the MJ7 enables the new AWS band, and is a full upgrade to 4.3.3
I also develop for Android, and have learned to never install an update from Verizon without FULLY researching what it does -- is it worth getting what it gives me in exchange for what I lose? You gotta watch Verizon -- they are on a program to completely remove any control over our phones from us. "Run what we give you and like it" -- screw them!
Yeah I don't get why Verizon has to make it this difficult.

I have rooted my Verizon SCH-I545 MJ7 wit VROOT and have had NO issues. It is very simple, one click. This Chinese site that has VROOT is a site that has custom ROMs etc. There doesn't appear to be any ROMs available for the SCH-I545 yet and you can't install xda roms or kernels from xda & VROOT has its own recovery program though not as extensive as xda. These Chinese guys have done a quick minor miracle with VROOT. I can get rid of bloatware & other annoying programs with this VROOT method. I've been running it for 4 days now without incident. Still, use at your own risk.

I tried ODINing my GN2 back to stock 4.1.2 tonight - I rooted it a couple months ago. Did not install a custom ROM, just rooted (the process also replaced the Recovery).
Tried ODINing back to stock using the files and information found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207
When I run ODIN, it simply fails. Tells me "0 succeeded / 1 failed". Phone still works, I just can't get anywhere in the rolling back to stock bit.
Longer Version:
I've had the phone since the end of January 2013. I rooted it for a couple of reasons, mostly to get rid of bloatware, but also for an app or two that needed root access. I've had zero problems with usability or stability of the device before or since the rooting.
I couldn't tell you which root process I used, but I know it came from an XDA thread, and it automatically replaced the recovery with something touch-based. I'm not sure of the name of the recovery. It did not replace the ROM - I've had less than desirable results from using non-stock ROMs in the past on a handful of other devices, so I wasn't about to risk it.
Since VZW is rolling out the 4.3 update and it looks like a good deal, I want to get my phone back to non-rooted, non-custom-recovery'd state so I can install the update. I'm also doing it because I'm hoping they get the phone up to 4.4 down the line so I can use HCE and GWallet.
Currently, I'm downloading (very slowly, thanks sammobile, for not hosting files on your own servers) the stock VZW 4.3 package from Sammobile.com in hopes I can do something with that and just go straight up from where I am, but I'm not holding my breath since the OTA fails due to the custom recovery.
Any thoughts on what I might try differently to get ODIN to work?
Guys I had the same issue. What I did to resolve my issue is:
1. Get the Verizon upgrade assistance installed on your PC . Here's one from scoobysnack (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47368638&postcount=7&nocache=1&z=2813086102250963)
2. Boot to download mode
3. plug in USB and wait for the update message on your PC
4. Update should take about 30-40 min depending on your connection speeds.
5. once updated, your phone should boot back to normal, but you will LOSE everything and have to start all over.
Hope this helps.

Help with some confusion about 4.3 mj9

Ok i bought a note 2 that already has the stock 4.3 mj9 update. From what I have read you can root it but can't put custom recovery due to locked bootloader. But then I read about using strap and can run tw based roms. So I'm confused and don't want a bricked phone. Here is what I want if it's possible. I want to run Nublia rom the one that's basically a note 3. Can someone clarify if this is possible and work correctly. Also the steps involved. I don't need detail for detail if I can cause I can look up and do the steps needed. Like root install strap? Install rom? Or can't be done wait till an unlock is available if ever?

I'm still on 4.1.2 with TWRP recovery.... but I've been following the threads on Safestrap.... so I hope I can help a little.
Other users are reporting that they're successfully using 4.3 Custom ROM's with Safestrap Beta for rooted 4.3 Sch-i605 with the locked bootloader.... This link to the thread on Safestrap Beta should help answer some questions for you. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51616723 .... People in the Safestrap Beta thread should be able to offer assistance with flashing Safestrap and a 4.3 Custom ROM after you get rooted. (From what I understand....at present, Safestrap only works with 4.3 TW ROM's with the stock 4.3 kernel... Also, they are still working out bugs.... so you'll have to flash over your stock ROM until they get where you can boot from ROM slots.... you will want to create a backup up of the stock ROM obviously before doing that).
With the N3bula ROM (or any TW ROM's on Safestrap).... people say a key thing is to make sure you choose to install the stock kernel when you install the ROM.
Here's a link to direct you to the Saferoot thread to help root your phone.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49389228
I don't take any credit for any of this information and would encourage you to thank the original posters and developers for all their help and awesome work.

Yep safe strap is the way to go.. root and then use safe strap..
Good choice on the ROM just playing..
But from what I read you need to do some modding of the ROM zip contents..
In N3bula we let you choose 2 kernels.. you can NOT flash a kernel with safe strap.. Soo you need to remove that option in the aroma script..
Then you should be good to flash..
I will be posting a NEW build most likely tomorrow and I will add a Safe Strap zip so it's up to you to hold off..
Also poke your head into the safe strap and make sure my steps are correct, since I do not run safe strap. .and also hit "Thanks" on @Beastmode profile bc he is the one that got safe strap up and running for you guys:thumbup:

Thank yall for the help i have been waiting to run the rom for awhile anyway so waiting a little longer is no problem. I just wanted to ask cause the last thing i want is to go and brick the phone cause there are so many posts about 4.3 locked bootloader it gets a little confusing trying to catch up lol

@kleigh774 - I'm glad to try to help. I've only had my Note 2 for a few months. So far, I've just stayed with 4.1.2 ROM's because I've been happy with how well they've been working for me. I've been contemplating trying out some 4.3 Roms and I'm gonna check out Trans Nebula Team's newest N3bula build this weekend . It's great that Safestrap is being developed for those on 4.3 locked stock and I hope you get to enjoy some custom Rom's soon. .

[Q] wanting to flash back from page plus.

I recently had my phone flashed to page plus with working 3g, and been talking with my dealer and they now have the 4g cards for page plus. In order to use them i need to be able take my phone basically back to stock and remove the flash to page plus from the phone. what is the best way to accomplish this is at all possible, could i just do an OTA update, or can i just download the stock firmware and flash it back using odin. Thanks

This is just a guess, but somewhat educated one. I would never take an OTA while running a modified ROM especially to try get back to a stock state. OTA are generally just patches not the whole system it most likely will cause major issues if not a soft or even worse a hard brick. I would go with the odin route for safety reasons but make sure you read all the directions and get the right images for your hardware model and maybe even the same baseband you were originally on before switching.
Lets see what other people think before you jump in...

Odin back to your the original firmware you were on before switching carries like the other person said. Your radio will be included in whatever full wipe Odin tar you use. How did you flash page plus? Did you just boot into download mode to do it?

You have to flash firmware compatible with your bootloader/kernel. What was/is your firmware version? It is under build number in settings/more/about phone.

Would that be my kernel? Or build?

You are on MK2. The last three characters of your build number tells you what firmware you are running, the last three under baseband version tells you what modem you have. This thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172 was created for the NC5 wipe and no wipe Odin Tars but the poster was kind enough to include links to the MK2 tars as well. Make sure you click on where it says MK2 for your downloads and flash in Odin via the instructions in the post and you should be good. Backup whatever data you need as you are basically going to be factory reseting your phone to MK2 so if you need text messages/call logs/contacts/calendar stuff back it up cuz you're going to lose it.
If I was helpful, dont just say "thanks"...click that little thumbs up.
Sent from my S4 that does what I want it to.
Awesome thank you so much
