[Q] No sound during calls and signal drop after 30 seconds - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
I've had my S3 for almost 2 years now (So definitely no warranty) and around 2 weeks ago it started acting out:
Whenever I answered or made a call, there would be no sound (media players could work fine in the background but no call sound) and after around 30 seconds the network signal would drop and take a minute or so to reconnect.
Texts, Apps and general internet usage works just fine but buttom line i've been without a proper phone to make calls with for the last 2 weeks.
I've tried flashing CM11 Installer version (used to be stock) and that helped for like a day, then I got an advice to flash a new modem but that didn't help either.
I've seen that this problem happened to some people around the web about 2 years ago but haven't managed to find a single [SOLVED] thread.
So, does ANYONE have any clue as to what's going on or how to solve it?\
I would really hate to shed 300$ on a new phone right about now =P

Flash the latest stock firmware for your country with Odin, then factory reset before booting. If still the same then you have a hardware fault.

Hello,
Were you ever able to find a solution for your problem? I have a customer who is complaining of the same issue(s).
She said that she is unable to make phone calls or send SMS messages while on Data (2G, 3G, etc.), as well as her signal drops repeatedly.
I was hoping that you'd be able to assist me if you were able to find your solution, as I think the next step would be a hardware (Antenna) change in the phone itself, if it isn't the software itself that's the issue.

[Q] Dropped calls in the last month

I have had this problem for about a month now. Until then (from July last year) everything was fine. I dial, and then phone says "Dialing" for approximately 2 seconds, and then says "Call Ended".
This is driving me crazy. I got a new SIM card because I read somewhere that the SIM card may be the problem. But it didn't help.
Once or twice have I had the situation where it says dialing, but never seems to dial, stays there for a long time, and then disappears.
The thing that I've also noticed is that if I go away from my home it does not fail.
This weekend I drove approximately 40 miles. I made maybe 20 calls because I was testing my phone. Every one was successful.
It seems that if I leave this particular area it works great. As soon as I get close to my house again, failed calls.
Any suggestions? it seems like a network problem, but my wife's phone never fails here. It is a different phone by the way.
I have seen a few posts about this, mostly in the T-Mobile vibrant forum, but no real solution, except getting a different brand. My experience with it working better away from my home leads me to believe it is a network problem, but after reading that people have had 3 different replacement phones, 4 different SIM cards, etc. I'm beginning to think that this phone has a serious problem.
Yes, although I said it once already, THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS!
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
I have found this happens on all makes and models, etc. I sell cell phones for a living (worked for a couple carriers, both GSM and CDMA). There are many causes, making a cell phone call is a super complicated operation. Most likely, your home tower is experiencing on a regular basis very high traffic loads or has some other issue. Luckily, for you, it is in all likely hood simply an outbound issue and will not and does not affect incoming calls, etc. Sadly, you just need to sort of live with it and accept that (no matter the carrier, btw) there are going to be issues like this.

I know that a call will failr every once in a while, but I have 1/3 to 1/2 of my calls failing, and it never used to happen. I have thought that maybe this area has high traffic. Although you would think the network would be good here, since there is a T-Mobile store within a mile of my house.
And I never had a problem in 6 years, until the last month or so. And my wife's phone never drops calls here.
I will continue to try and figure this out.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am trying to think of any changes that I have made to my phone recently, anything.
Thanks.

I'm new here and I came here after replacing my phone 3 times for the same thing + not being able to receive calls.
Sometimes the wife would call me and the phone won't register the call and I’ll receive the VM and hour later!
Lord knows the grief I get when I don’t answer!!!
I’ve replaced SIM 4 times; TM has done “trouble ticket” to check the towers! (Notice the s in tower)
It seems it’s just this phone, I’ve used her Garminfone and worked fine.
Used her old G1 and also worked fine!!!
I’ve since rooted and used a ROM to see if that helps!
One thing for sure, these “cooked up” ROM’s that are available here are 10 times better then the crap that most manufactures puts out!
I will never buy a Samsung phone again!!!

[Q] Randomly not recieving calls etc

Greetings from sunny ???? notts
Been a long time lurker, but now i am in need of some help.
Had the galaxy s2 for a couple of weeks now and most of the time it works great. but occasionaly it will not recieve calls or sms. i get no notifications of missed calls, voicemail messages etc. to the caller it just goes straight to voicemail. A few hours later i get all? the sms come in at once, sometimes a voicemail notification but no missed calls. when this happens i have a good signal and am able to call out.
Its definately not because i was using data services at the time and not lack of signal.
I have rooted the phone, but still with a stock rom (ke7 ?)
Anyone got any ideas ?
The handset ? The sim card ? or the network ?
All the best

i have the same issue as you ...
the only solution that i found is to set my phone is GSM MODE only but you will loose your 3g/h data and only use EDGE

Lo Rich. Miggy round?(private joke)
Was wondering, was the phone on charge when it missed the calls/texts?
it could be any number of things, really. if your sim card is not fairly new i would replace it just to be on the safe side. you might try hard resetting your phone (which will delete all your info so back it up first) and starting over.
do you have any apps that block data connections at various times? if so i would delete that app and use the phone for a few days without it to see if the issue goes away.
have you flashed a different radio? if so, try the one that matches your rom, or try the newest one you can find.
there are many possible causes, but if i were in your position i would hard reset it and not install any apps that might interfere with your connection to the network and i would make sure my sim card was fairly new. if the issue still persists you might try asking for an exchange if possible.
If upu have the phone on GSM only then incoming calls go directly to voicemail when data bursts are happening (which is often). So switch to 3g to fix.
If you're not on GSM then I have no idea, maybe no signal in that area...
Thanx
Ok theres possibly been a development with this.
But first a big thanx to all your suggestions, and my response to them.
Seems a bit pointless having such a device then crippling some of it just to get the basic phone part to work. although switching to gsm only may be a temporary solution.
Fault occurs either on charge or not.
Fault has occured whilst at home where all data connections are disabled and wi-fi exclusively used. I havent tried flashing a different radio yet, but it is still on the latest ?? ke7 ? firmware. Sim card was brand new a couple of weeks ago.
So gsm only wont help, but as above when at home i use wi-fi.
Now i spoke to my network, talk mobile a few days ago, they say it will take more than 5 days for their IT dept to contact me to try and sort this ! as i can still make calls they dont see it as a major fault ??? Looks like customer care is not important to them.
I have also spoke to the company i purchased from(wish i hadnt as customer DISatisfaction appears high on their list of prioritys)mobiles.co.uk. I was speaking to someone at their Fullfillment team yesterday about getting another handset sent out, but for some reason i couldnt finish arranging it yesterday. Then early yesterday eve one of their guys rang me back out of the blue to say he had been looking into my fault and had found something not quite right with the original connection they had set up. He was honest enough to admit it was a bit beyond his knowledge and was getting someone from the connections dept to help him. they are going to re-do my connection and for me to wait 24hrs for this to be sorted and hopefully it should be ok after that. All credit to Leeroy at mobiles.co.uk.
The only problem now is other than getting someone to ring me every 1/2hr, how do i know if its working or not ?
I guess the best i can do is leave it a while and see if i get any more complaints that people cant get hold of me.
Once again many thanx for all your suggestions, i will update this when i am confident it has or hasnt been fixed.
many thanx

this happens to me perhaps every other day
i get a txt saying so and so called but left no message
my reception is fine and my phone has been sitting in one place on 3 bars
i call the person and they said they tried to call and it went straight to voicemail
the txt arrives instantly so i am putting up with just calling people back as its not very frequent
plus i have 1200 mins so i need to use them!
I have the same problem and I believe mine has something to do with the way the towers handle the switch from 3g to edge. You said you get a text message showing a missed call, I think that would be usefull to me also until we can get this fixed. Are you using google voice to get your sms, if not what?
I have the exact same problem, and it's beginning to interfere with my work. The HSDPA signal here is very weak. So I switched it to GSM only, which resolved my signal problem, but I keep missing calls. All I get is a sms saying that I missed a call. Would my problems be solved if I had full HSDPA signal the entire time? You said that calls are missed when data bursts are happening on GSM only? I almost never receive a call the first time. Only after ~3 attempts would they get a hold of me.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

My internet connection has gone ?

Hi all.
Yesterday morning i was using my phone and all was fine (i get a suprisingly quick net speed on my phone usually) but at some point last night it just slowed right down or in most cases has stopped .
I have a good signal and the H+ symbol on my screen so i know it's not a signal issue. I'm able to make phone calls fine.
It'll load up google eventually after about a minute or so (used to take less than 5 secs) but the connection times out trying to load anything else, even the play store!
I rang three who told me first to take out sim card, clean it ,wait a while the it should be fine. When that didn't work they told me to do a factory reset and now that hasn't worked i'm on a 48 hour waiting list for there technical dept to ring me ...
Can anyone suggest anything else that could be causing these issues ?
I'm using the standard rooted kernels/roms from the sammobile site and have just upgraded from version 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 and it's still the same.
Thanks
Dave :good:

Trouble making/receiving calls and texts.

Been having issues since last night. Samsung Galaxy S3 Three UK Network.
Since about 5pm last night i have been unable to make/receive calls and texts. When i go to dial a number it says dialling on the screen and doesn't do anything. Signal is full. If i try it perhaps four or five times it will eventually dial out but after talking for a few minutes the voice goes like a robot and is as if someone is talking under water. Cant make anything out. Same when someone calls me. Goes to answerphone and after about 5 attempts at calling me my phone will ring.
Texts are coming up fail every now and then and my 3G signal keeps alternating between H+,H and 3g and only works every few minutes.
Have called Three but its torture. They say no problem at their end and have escalated my issue which can take up to THREE days for someone to respond.
As phone is an S3 and as its a micro sim i cant try the sim in another phone as my other phones are normal sized sims. Did try putting it in anyway but the phone wouldnt detect it. Have also tried a factory reset with no joy.
So frustrating as it seems to be intermittent.
Any ideas :good:
Is this since after the jb update? You may wish to try flashing the same firmware using odin and see that sorts it out. 3G signal on Three basically means nothing is working anyway.. lousy network

[Q] Phone Calls do not connect

Hi All,
I've been a visitor to XDA for couple years now and greatly appreciate the people who post here who have helped me to custom my Galaxy SI, SII & SIII with generally no issues. I've had my SIII for about a year and a half now running CWM & CF root with either Darky's ROM or a Nightly build of Cyanogen Mod.
Since moving to a new house (few weeks ago) the signal on my handset drops as I make/receive calls. I assumed initially it was just the signal in the area and as I had been running a non-stable build I flashed a full release to be certain. I chose Delta ROM initially but have since flashed Darky's, Delta (again), Cyanogenmod (Nightly, stable, unofficial 11), multiple different Modems when running CM (area specific, model specific & the emergency one for EFSv2) and followed the guide to reset to stock (unroot, official recovery, reset counter & stock ROM) none of which has helped.
To be specific, I can use the Wi-Fi, 3G, send texts and use apps which use 3G to send texts (MightText); which to me (Novice at this stuff) seems to indicate that the 2G & 3G functions of the phone work. Yet still as I make a call, or receive one, I do not hear ringing, person speaking or any form of buzzing; this applies if I use the phone as normal, the speaker phone or a handsfree set.
Roughly 30 seconds into the call the network drops (signal bars go empty), the phone call displays 'Out of Network Area' or some such, the call ends and the phone returns to the home screen where roughly a minute later the network reconnects and I can use 3G again, send texts etc. as above, except still cannot make calls.
I don't know if it has any bearings but on Cyanogenmod the time before the network drops is around the 45-60 seconds mark, all other ROMs disconnect at around the 30 second mark and my GF has an S4, on O2 as well, and the signal on her phone has been temperamental lately, but has not shown the same problem, she is running Stock firmware without root etc.
If I had to replace a component instead of sending off to service centre, how difficult would that be?
Thank you in advanced,
Martin
If it still has the same issue with full stock rom then it's hardware, motherboard/antenna etc. Unless you often dismantle and successfully reassemble mobile phones it isn't recommended to try yourself.
Samsung give two year limited warranty, worth trying with service centre after resetting counter.

Yeee I had a look around alot of forums for similar issues but could only find posts where there was no signal at all or playing up due to modem etc.
In desperation I opened dialogue with an O2 Guru who said hardware, but just seemed very coincidental to have happened when we moved =/
Thank you for confirming though worth a shot!
Martin
You moved so you may not have the same signal strength .
You need to work out if it is the network or the phone .
Try another phone in your location with your sim .
Test your phone next to an O2 mast .
Wipe phone flash stock rom for your network and test .

The O2 Guru I spoke with said the signal at my home address should be OK, my GF has an S4 on O2 and although a bit crackly, her phone functions works and I have my SIM in a temp phone, a Galaxy Ace, which has also been working fine in the area.
It's a good idea to test closer to a mast, I don't know where the nearest one is to be honest, is there anywhere I can find this out?
My phone is currently flashed back to stock, that's recovery, ROM, counter, modem (I believe) etc. followed this guide to do so:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2323847
What boggles me is that the phone is able to send texts, use 3g and search for different networks to 'register' etc. but the phone call disconnects. I would have thought that the same component which connects to network to send texts would connect to make calls? Is it possible that where I am in a weak signal area, the phone has damaged the component by increasing the gain by too much/for too long? If so is that because there was custom software or would the settings for this component be the same as stock?
Bit concerned about sending it off and the possible questions/costs associated with this sort of thing. This is the first time I've had a phone which has a hardware fault, all the other times a phone has played up its usually due to the software which can be flashed using any number of methods found on this site.
What a frustration, sorry to ask so many questions, just at a bit of a loss as to what to do with it now!
Thanks,
Martin
In a weak signal area your phone has to output 10x the signal strength to maintain voice call, which it probably didn't have to before. Data and text use much less power, hence why they still work. To test just find somewhere with full bars strength, maximum ASU value in settings, about, status.
It sounds like a high resistance gap somewhere, it gets hotter during use until it breaks the connection - then cools to join again.
Just make sure you describe the fault correctly and it should be repaired.
