Anyone use this or buy from this site? Seems cheap enough *lol* and free shipping to us Canucks!

I think it would be the same with those listed on eBay, I bought OTG USB 3.0 and it works pretty good.

thanks for the info...

i bought one of these from mobilepower on amazon, but it doesn't work. wanted it to power an external harddrive, but it was a no-go. my notepro recognizes that a usb connector was added, but doesn't mount the harddrive, even with the power pack attached.
however, i did get a usb2 otg cable and that works (pictured below). i don't know what the difference would be, perhaps i just got a dud with the usb3.

I've got one coming in in the next 21 days (HK shipping, lol) so I'll tell you what's what when it arrives over here.

In an effort to find a way to lighten my travel load just a little (normally travel with tablet and my macbook pro) for trips where I'm really not going to need the laptop I decided to try out using a 4-port USB 3.0 hub.
Just got it yesterday so I haven't put it through its paces just yet.
Here's a test setup I just tried using a USB keyboard, mouse, 500GB hard drive formatted exFAT, and a usb SD card reader. Test setup is powered by an Anker Astro2 9000mah battery and utilizes this USB OTG cable and this USB 3.0 hub.
At first the setup was a bit finicky. I had plugged everything in (the wire for the hard drive is the piggy back style where it has an additional connector for power) and the hard drive would not show up in file browsers. It wasnt until I unplugged all but the hard drive and ran the hub off of the tablet's power that the drive showed up. I then plugged back the power source and everything was fine after that as I inserted the keyboard, mouse and card reader. Further testing is needed but at least I know I can copy files from my DSLR cards to my HDD as a backup at my leisure back at the hotel on my next trip.
All of this is more proof of concept kind of stuff for me. When I travel I will be using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse that gets left in the hotel room along with the hard drive and hub. I'll carry around the tablet wherever I go but it's nice to know that in a pinch I can use it back at the hotel as more than just a tablet if I need to.

does that y-connecter power the tablet or the drive? my drive does not require power attached (its a USB3 WD Passport Ultra 500GB) but I need to power my tablet with the drive connected as i barely get over 3 hours of 1080p playback till I need to plug in.
if your cord doesn't I need to find one that does - if one exists...if not i may switch over to a Surface Pro 3 as it has USB3 fullaize and a sep. power connector...will buy a power inverter for my vehicle

Doesn't power the tablet, it's meant to power the USB devices.
I'm no electrical engineer but I would imagine that once the tablet goes into USB HOST mode there are limitations as to where power is going to go and that the power is going to go to the external devices not the tablet. Still I've seen mention of cables existing that will power both but have yet to see any concrete evidence of them. Would have loved it if this one powered both ways but I simply have no need to work for hours on end with a hard drive connected to my tablet.
I would imagine that with power going to the hard drive with this cable though your video playback time would increase substantially, perhaps even double to 6 hours.
For me I just use mircoSD cards with my video content on them that I'll swap in/out of the tablet as needed.

I have yet to find evidence that anyone has successfully powered the tablet with one of the y-adapters while using another device. I prefer to use my external drive as it doesn't require power connection and is 500GB. Maybe I will have to go the pricier microSD card route and limit the amount of media I have on it.
Not ideal if you ask me. Not that the SP3 is perfect but at least power and USB3 are separate ports and at least 128GB though the one I am looking at is 256GB.

Yeah I wish there was a better solution. I have a Kingston MobileLite collecting dust over here. I wished that it worked well but it just plain doesn't. Large high res video file playback is hit and miss and the software that Kingston put out for Android is ****e. In theory this thing would be perfect for what you want, a separate device that you could power and use to share your hard drive wirelessly to the tablet to stream. In practice . . useless as far as I'm concerned. I dunno, perhaps all I need to do is re-encode my library of files to a format that will work with this device combo but I'm just not motivated to do that.

It's nice that it's a small one, but every USB device will work
I didn't have any, but have an USB Harddisk (IDE).
I attached a DVD player to the IDE connection for the harddisk and it worked.
I'm not using this everytime, but only used it for installation of SP1 and Office 2007 Enterprise.
Now my HD is putted back in his case

I have a similar one, that is LG GSA-E50L and it does not work properly...nothing helps, even SP1 could not make it work. The OS sees it and so does BIOS, i can even eject discs but it does not read or record any data !!! The device works excellently in my laptop/xp Media Center so it seems it is the problem of Vista...Who knows what to do?

Are you using external power, or just the usb to power ?
Don't know that drive, i use a plextor, and it needs external power with the shift, or a usb power source pluged in the mini usb plug of the 3 port usb hub/lan device.

Cause the manual says it does not need any additional power plugs I used the equiped USB data cable (USB-mini USB) only. Another option suggested by the manufacturer that i used is USB data cable and DC-JackType USB power cable together that were pluged into 3 port USB hub from HTC...what exact model of the Plextor drive do you have, maybe i would buy one instead my LG...
my plextor is a PX-608CU
It dosnt need external power running on a laptop but i does when running on the shift,
On this drive there is 2 usb cabels, 1 power/data cable and one additional usb power cable.
even if i use both in the shift hub the is not enough power to use the drive unless i either use a miniusb powersupply to power the hub, or use external power to power the drive. (so the shift usbhub does not have that much juice in thats also why they made the powerplug in the hub)
Thank U Master !!!

It really is as you said; i would not have guessed that since the manual says it doesn't need additional source of power, but of course it does not refer to HTC Shift...so i really am grateful and i should also say sorry to MS for supposing some Vista bugs...

Mine works ok when attached to the single usb port, but not when using the HTC hub... same goes for the 250Gb Passport drive.
I bought a slim wee LG DVD reader/writer, and also found that I had to use the USB power cable for the Shift to mount disks.
Question for the community: Windows Media Player refuses to play DVDs and pops up this error:
Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings.
Any suggestions for getting a disk to play without having to rip it first? Thanks!
Does anyone know of a slimline DVD player (not bothered about writer) that works with the Shift and will playback DVDs powered by the USB port only?
HTC Shift doesnt provide enough USB power for external USB devices!
Hi i use the following external DVD writer with my Shift ...
http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10986
The product is excellant and also has light scribe ... but let me assure u that though it works with a few laptops without external power, it doesnt work with shift. i have tried it without external power and though it's lights coome one and it spins also nothing is read... so u have to use an external power adapter with HTC shift if u wanna use an external dvd writer!
Realy portable printer, I would say Brother MW-140BT or MW-260 those are realy portable. Anyway either of them are too expensive.
I am using the old good Canon BJC-50 portable printer connected through the Delock USB Infrared adapter Ref. 61574.

[Q] Will this work ?

Just wondering if a typical cell charger can provide enough power to power these three things. (or if it will even work properly)
1 The Phone
2 A USB flash drive
3 HML adapter
What I want to do is connect power to the USB splitter male (I already have a wall plug to USB female adapter) then with the USB female ends I will connect a USB flash drive and then use a male USB to male micro-USB cable to power the MHL adapter. The phone goes to the other micro-USB end of the MHL adapter.

I want this for two reasons. 1 So I can play media from a flash drive to a TV or monitor and 2 (if this will even work) use it to connect a USB to XLR cable so that I can record with a better quality microphone to my phone.
I realize that the phone being able to recognize and use the flash drive or microphone may be an issue but I can take a chance on that if nobody can confirm if it will or will not work.
BTW: if you have not already noticed, we are finally starting to get some reasonably priced MHL adapters on fleabay now. They are ranging from around 20-26 CAD (one in picture is 26)
I would like to know as well, as that sounds like a great alternative to carrying around DVD's and stuff, maybe even an externally powered harddrive, would need extfat or ntfs support though for large files.

Linux reads NTFS hard drives and flash drives fine, so I am hoping that Android should also.
I was planning on getting the MHL adapter regardless anyway, and the other cables that I would need would only be like 10 bucks. So I am wanting to try it out since, like you say, opens up more options for portability that may replace other devices or at least take up less space.
I was mainly looking to see if I would hear a show stopper of why not to do this, like if this set up could damage something that is connected.

You will need a proper usb to go cable to connect the flash drive or hdd, i have connected a flash drive to my phone without any problems..
I would think you would need a custom kernels or ntfs-3G modules for the kernel you are using.
The big thing is if the phone can deal with being charged, output hdmi and connect to a HDD over the same usb port at the same time?
Maybe a powered hub?
Also wondering if there would be enough bandwidth on the bus to support that all.
The big thing that would be good for me is that I could buy a cheap self powered hdd, load it up with movies and stuff and watch it while at work where there's a lot of down time, and being able to charge and use tv out at the same time would mean I could watch the iplayer or something on the tv without having to worry about battery life!
Hey, connect a mouse and keyboard as well and your phone is basically a normal computer!

Good idea. This powered hub is almost as cheap as the splitter cable and should take care of any power requirements.
As for the on-the-go cable, I have different angled micro male to usb female cables already so that I can help take stress off the jack when using it while charging. My USB flash drive does not power up with this cable. I just assumed it needed external power. What is different about the OTG cable, did they twist some wires or are mine just meant for charging if they are not working ? All the pins are present and the cable is thick, so no reason why they would not just connect everything internally.
Thanks for the replies so far.

In order for usb to go to work you need a special cable, its got a special pin that's grounded or floating or has a few different values depending, the cables are very cheap on eBay or there's guides on how to make them.
OTG won't work with generic cables im afraid.
I just want this idea to work myself :d

Im sitting here with a SGS2 with a USB kb, mouse, and a flash drive connected to it.
SGS2> (usb to go cable) > Powered hub > Mouse + keyboard + flash drive.
To get random devices to work (not hubs, input devices) you will need to add the device ids, see this thread for more info, more info and some device/vendor ids and a huge list of almost every device/vendor id
Attached is a rules file with logitech and some other vendors, add and expand as needed!
Now I need to buy a micro USB > many micro USB's and a mhl cable!
The powered hub is a must or stuff just wont work due to the power draw.
Im looking at picture of the MHL adaptor, and they all have a USB port for passthough, so we can defo at the very least charge while outputting via it.
The big question now is if you can daisy chain and do MHL and OTG at the same time!
Well, unless on a lucky chance the USB port will work with a splitter, you cant do MHL and OTG at the same time. A real shame
Thanks for the updates and links veyka. It also looks like the OTG cables do not charge the phone with the jumpered pins, so I will have to make sure and mark the OTG cables when they get here.
I should have the rest of my cables arrive in about 2-3 weeks and will post an update of what will or will not work. Sounds like the OTG cable alone should work with the USB to XLR cable for a microphone, as long as I can find a way to get the phone to recognize it. Though it would be nice to charge at the same time as well which the OTG does not support.
Do you know off hand what the headphone jack will accept for inputs ? Will it take TRRS or TRS audio in as well ? I am just looking at more options for XLR to the phone for connectivity without needing a mixer. Then I will use a mixer as well to see how much of a difference the balanced XLR out will make.

In the end android should support anything linux does, you might need to build a kernel module (driver) or find someone that will for you.
You can get pretty much any input device going with the links above, but other stuff, I dont know im afraid
Hope lives eternal.
No clue im afraid
No problem bud. You have been more than helpful already. I already have a plethora of cables and devices for recording on laptop and PC with Windows and Linux. My Android uses for recording are so far purely just for practicing so that I have it down in case something of interest is created. So ease of use and portability is the main factor.
It also interested me just to be able to find different ways of recording since so much of it is done through software these says. The more knowledgeable I am with cables, signals and processing, the more options that I will have available to me. Though I still like to mic an amp then process afterwards.

USB Host/OTG testing

I just got my DNA yesterday, and I have been testing a few USB peripherals to see how they work with an OTG adapter. I was unable to get anything working without an external power source, so I don't think the DNA is capable of delivering power via the port.
My setup consists of the following:
1. Belkin F5U234 4-port USB 2.0 hub
2. The hub is powered via a Mini USB Y-cable plugged into a USB PC/USB charging adapter (I can't seem to find the power adapter that came with the hub, but when I do, I'll test it)
3. The other end of the Y-cable is plugged into the OTG adapter, which is then plugged into the DNA.
From my experience so far, the hub has to be powered, with at least one peripheral plugged in, prior to plugging it into the phone.
I have been able to mount an SD card from a card reader and mount a USB flash drive.
I have been able to use a USB mouse.
I have not been able to get the phone to recognize a DSLR for use with DSLR Dashboard. However, I have not been able to do this on my Touchpad either, so it may be an operator malfunction. I've tried a Nikon D600 and D80.
USB keyboards should work.
Logitech Gamepad is recognized.
External hard drives are recognized, but should be formatted correctly.
Also worth noting is that the phone displays a message saying it's unable to charge the device and to use the supplied charger when the OTG cable is plugged in.
If someone can recommend a decent MIDI app for Android or a music production app, I have both MIDI devices and a Rocksmith cable that I can test with.
It has the ability to do USB otg self powered, just not enabled. Kernel needs it enabled.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
What format do you use for your hard drive? NTFS?
I've been plugging in USB flash drive, it mounts, but doesnt see any of my files on it... Also, it completely messed up my media files on the internal card, videos mostly, so I'm basically restoring the phone...
It doesn't seem to work with my wired Xbox 360 controller, sadly.

A year ago I bought an OTG cable for my Rezound and of course it didn't work.
So yesterday, I visited the Verizon store to do a little testing with my dust laden OTG cable.
1) The DNA has a default setting for mounting SD cards. Settings--> Storage--> Mount SD. When I ticked this tab....bam!
2) The DNA recognized my Micro SD card from my Rezound phone. Upon opening the music player, the DNA found my music and played a song. Unfortunately, the phone didn't have a file manager app installed and the play store didn't have an account to enable downloading apps.
3) The DNA recognized my Logitech IR USB dongle but I wasn't able to get the keyboard working in the limited time I had. The Logitech keyboard showed up under Settings--> Launguage & keyboard--> Keyboard & input methods.
While I would prefer an SD slot, there is something to be said about being able to plug-in any USB storage device. I plan to return to the store and test further. For me, this is a game changer. I am seriously considering upgrading to this phone.
Now to overcome the case/battery issue. I'm very used to the comfort of the Rezound with the bulkier extended battery/case/holster setup. Fits perfect on my hip & hand, lasts all day and it's rooted with wifi tether. Meets all my needs but 1080p is addictive...

1) The DNA has a default setting for mounting SD cards. Settings--> Storage--> Mount SD. When I ticked this tab....bam!

What brand did you buy? I'm waiting for my DNA to get approved and I'm very interested in being able to continue to use my external SD card....plus if game pad peripherals work I'd be highly interested in that.

Now to overcome the case/battery issue. I'm very used to the comfort of the Rezound with the bulkier extended battery/case/holster setup. Fits perfect on my hip & hand, lasts all day and it's rooted with wifi tether. Meets all my needs but 1080p is addictive...

My rezound's battery life is poor if I'm being optimistic and this is with barely using it. I have tried various kernels, roms, and batterys and I think this is just my third lemon.....Dying to get out of this into something else. I've read the fears on battery life but anything is better then what I have and a quadcore processor is worth dealing with it for the performance gain.
Bought THIS cable on ebay for a couple of bucks. Plugged a micro usb reader (with my 32Gig card in it) in one end and the other into my phone and voila! Complete access to my old external sd. Played my music fine and if I was rooted, I could restore an old Titanium backup. Love it!
So I been reading up on things dusting off my half knowledge of HTC (been since the Eris days) and from what I understand s-off is something that hasn't been real achievable for the phones that don't have am external sdcard. If what this thread is discussing do some more knowledgeable people think that this could be used to obtain s-off? The possibilities of this could be very promising our just wishful thinking!!

Wanted to weigh in. I got an otg cable and used a Usb hub (not powered externally) and both my Logitech g9x mouse and Microsoft sidewinder x4 keyboard work and are powered by the phone. The game pad I have does not work.

Also I know its hard to see the lights on the keyboard but they are on as well.
Got the Butterfly X920d today.
USB OTG working without hubs so far for: wireless USB keyboard and mouse, external storage, and most importantly for me USB AUDIO! Gamepads are a bust so far, but yet to try my gamepad (so far Logitech F310, PS3, Xbox 360 for Windows controller not working via USB OTG even with USB/BT controller, even the Wiiremote is not working over bluetooth when it did on my One X last year).
I can't wait for my USB OTG adapter I ordered from Amazon on 12/21/12 to finally get here off the slow boat from China (actually it's Japan I think)! lol estimated delivery still shows 1/18-2/5..but for $0.86 I cannot really complain.

The one i got from amazon just came yesterday. Worked with Sd card reader, will have to try to get a ps3 controller to work. Have no real need for it right now, but for 80 cents, might as well have it for when i do need something.
I've used a USB for a mouse and keyboard and SD card, yes SD must be FAT32 but I use a 32g card with no problems, streamed Movies at ease, between this, dnla and cloud I've got 8 gig free on my phone..
anyone figure out how to get the 360 to work?
Lights power on, but flashes and goes away when Android gives me a notification "Unable to charge"
Doesn't work with USB Stick Center, etc...
I can mount flash drives and such however

Bud, I doubt anyone has very many functioning dna's at this point. But I would check out roms that support this out of the box at this point.

Guide..OTG USB HOST and CHARGING at same time for Galaxy tabs..

After talking to alot of people about my modded dock last year alot of people are still having trouble doing this
and getting Red X and Not charging properly etc..have had recent PMs asking for help so i hope this can help you guys..
Decided to Try make a full guide to OTG and Charging at same time for Galaxy tabs.
I only have 7.73G but would guess it should work for all tabs?
If you have a different Tab or Differnet Rom i cant say it would work for you..Not all Roms are the same..At this stage im on Official JB Rom Stock for 7.7..will test other custom roms and report..
I started with my Kinetica Break out Board (Google it if you want to buy one, about $15 when i got mine)

I stuffed it last year experimenting and burned out a earth of pin 01 but just soldered a wire to the top and all good now
(ignore the black earth wire when looking at my pics, your black wire should go to pin 01 of board).
*instead of using a female usb port for host i use a USB MINI MALE Plug that can go directly to a HDD or Powered HUB.By soldering this directly to the Break out Board it eliminates bad connections and annoying drop outs whilst watching movies from your USB HDD.
This is how it's wired.
OTG USB
Black 01
Green 03
White 04
Red 06
Power Source (must be 2 amps 5v.. if you want it to work properly)
Red 07/08
Black 30
OTG Host
Resistor 20k 13/15
Thats it very easy..
Before connecting your new set up to the Tab be sure to run a test light and check for any shorts or crossed up wires.just apply power to the wires and check the surrounding pins even if you didnt solder to them(just incase you have a short)once this has been checked you are good to go..
First step is Tablet is OFF and kinectica board is pluged in.
Power is applied to your wires and must be 2 amps 5v..
noted i used power from my external battery for this exercise and is 2 amps source...but you can get from power adapter or somewhere else..
Powered Hdd and usb are now connected to break out board.
This part you will see it trigger charge by plugging in the powered hdd.
(Its not the power wires that trigger it.For advanced people Dont try anything with shorting data lines to trigger charge or the 2 resisters that are used in the stock charger,i went that way and fried my tab and break out board once but got it replaced under warrenty not worth playing around with it.ive tryed switches and everything but found the first way to be the safest way after shorting the board.you can never rely on switches to work properly and they can make contact when closed etc damaging you tab so dont bother trying it)
If you got a Red X over your battery Its NOT charging and you shouldnt see one.You need to restart the tab again and need to get rid of the red x properly before going further.
To Get Rid of Red X is tricky sometimes and can be a pain and give you one every time but sometimes it just starts with out one.you need to be patient and just figure out the right time to connect the hdd on start up.when it works remember exactley when you did it and do the same next time.eg count samsung logo flashing etc..then connect it.a bit of experimenting is required here.
Restart the tab with power added and hdd powered but no usb connected.this time put usb in as samsung logo apears.delaying plugging in the hdd seems to work for me and next time it starts you should see its charging on lock screen.
at bottom Right hand corner you will also see a usb symbal and get a message usb device connected.
Now you must check settings/Battery status to see its "AC Charging".
If not another restart will be required untill you get AC Charging.Remember no .5amp 5v sources these may give usb charging instead of AC Charging..
Once this is OK continue..
Now open paragon or what ever you use and mount your drive where you want it im doing mine automatically as recomended and seems to work good with the new Stock JB 4.12 rom....
this pic you can see the hdd is mounted in my files
Hdd Sizes..
im using a 3TB NTFS on this pics and works fine.Have also tryed 2TB,1TB,500GB and all work fine inc multiple drives at same time with powered hub.
Movies can be played with MX player or BS player for the ones that dont play on mx player like some of the blueray rips
Next step is optional..
I wanted to clean it up abit so dug out one of my old USB Host adapters and opened up the plastic case and removed circiut board.
now glued the kinetica board to the case after checking it all works..
glue drying all day before a i close the case but will look a bit neater than wires and stuff everywhere.
I like this better than the dock i did before..
Any questions fire away..
I havent used host for any other purpose than the HDD.
The guys running DanielHKs Roms are 4.2JB
for NTFS Mounting you will need to use Cryo File manager to first make a new folder at /new folder location.
You will need to mount it exactley there..you can not mount it in /storage as NTFS has problems in 4.2 im sure a fix will be around the corner but i ended up going back to stock 4.12 for a while cause wanted to try the new stock rom and so far no complaints.Im still Rooted with TWRP and have DanielHKs Rom Recoverys so when i get some time ill make a back up then swap roms and post up my results using charge and hdd on those roms(PA and CM10.1).
have done this on ICS before and can confirm both host and charge worked at same time.
Will update more pics of my board when the glue dry and case is back together..
Well plugged it in and played around with it this morning turning on and off repeatedley..
went into charge and hdd every time with no red x.
the only time you will get a red x is when you plug in otg host and charge at same time whilst the tab is on.
I did this to look for solutions and found simply restart it will get rid of the red x..dont touch anything just reset it.heres the red x over the battery..
Ive made it sound simple to do and works with no problems but must admitt ages ago when i first started using host and charge together at same time i also had troubles with drop outs and red x s alot.Really i think soldering the usb cable directley to the board fixed all that, now i never got a red x again.also forgot to mention..When you battery is full and 100 percent or so..if you unplug charger and keep watching movie or whatever you were doing you cant plug charge back in when its turned on and hosting it will give you the red x and you battery will continue to deplete..when you want to reconnect charging again you will have to unmount hdd and restart it with everything plugged in again.
Ive clocked up more hours than anybody would beleive as used this to watch movies whilst working at my old job last year.it was shift work and my co worker would take over and use it aswell when my shift finnished.we had the Tab running the HDD and on Charge 24/7 for 7 months straight..
the tab never had a problem charging all that time as was depleating at same time to keep the host connection.once it gets full i unplug it and let it drain.
well im going to change roms now and test it out on different ones..
will post up to confirm which roms are ok..
Tried out danielHKs newest CM ROM...for a short time
Charging and OTG works fine....
If using es file explorer need to change permissions to root access first and remember forever..
Then make a new folder outside of the /storage directory .
It needs to be made at /new folder.
Then use paragon to set manually and mount this location.
This 4.2 is not working properly and won't mount NTFS in normal place.unfortunately you need to make this new folder on every start up.
Aside from that you can charge and access the drive at same time on this ROM..I'm guessing PA would work the same.I found there is a
/usbdisk0 that looks like it could be used but when I try use paragon manually to select that one it over rides my selection and mounts it as /storage/usbdisk0.This won't work as can't be mounted in /storage so this is why I made a new folder. Not 100% sure but looking again /usbdisk0 doesn't show up in CM file manager
Under / . so I'm guessing es file xplorer is showing it maybe its a shortcut link to /storage/usbdisk0 and that's why won't work...will
Have a look further when I got time...
Will try some More ROMs and post up details...I'm guessing they will all work fine now after CM works...
Well my tab still on charge in CM..
Just checked the battery level and notice it says charging but is depleting slowly....
Sorry but CM doesn't work at moment I need more time to find why and re check everything again...
Will test and report....
hi, would it be possible for the usb card reader kit to be used and where could i tap/put for 5v input so it could charge and same time use the card reader?
Really I would have to say No ..
Best bet would be to get the break out board from kinnetica and replace the board inside the card reader like my pics.the problem with the card reader is the 30 pin connector that is soldered to the origonal board is not populated at the charging pins.to remove it or try to populate it i would imagine you would stuff it up and just easier to replace the board with kinetica one.It only cost me $15..
Best investment i ever made.
other way to do it is to open up a old desktop dock and add power to inside it.
search modding origonal desktop dock samsung for more info..
Adapter available now that can simultaneously charge and have USB hosting Galaxy Tab
An adapter is available now for that has simultaneous charging and USB hosting for the Galaxy Tab. See the blurb written by the designer, Roman Wynnyckyj of LAVA Computer MFG. More info on the adapter is available on the LAVA Computer MFG website (I can't post the link since I just joined). Maybe someone else can post a link to the product page: "xxx://lavalink.com/products/usb-host-charging-adapter-for-samsung-galaxy-tab/"
"Well it is possible to charge and have the Galaxy Tab in host mode at the same time. It took us a good while to figure it out but it has been done.
We have built a little cable with 2 usb connectors on the end - one for charging, one for a USB host device such as a usb-memory stick, keyboard, serial port etc. Note, you can also connect a hub.
The circuitry to do this little trick is quite complicated and requires a state-sequential machine (cpu) to cycle the tablet whenever charge power is applied. The unfortunate negative of this is that whenever charge power is applied the tablet will disconnect all host devices, enable charging and then reconnect the attached devices. If charge power is unplugged later on the host mode is not affected. Charge rate varies with battery level. The highest rate (about 1.7 amps will be achieved when the tablet is near or below 10% battery charge. As the battery becomes more fully charged the tablet automatically reduces power draw. Once fully charged the tablet will draw about 700mA with screen full on (full brightness) keeping the battery at full charge.

It's not the same. The e-bay item only offers (supplemental) power to a USB device connected to the tab (a hungry HDD for example).
This can be simply solved by a powered USB HUB.
The device from LAVA does CHARGE the TAB while using it.
The problem is you cannot usually use the tab (with a USB device attached) and simultaneously CHARGE it.
Will the Lava adapter work with Galaxy Note 10.1 with an identical 30 pin connector?
Should work the GT2 Note 10.1

It should work with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Note. There is a video on YouTube showing it working with the Verizon LTE Note 10.1. Search for "galaxy tab usb adapter host charge". It is one of the videos from LAVA.
It doesn't work with mine, Galaxy Note 10.1
I've got this Lava adapter, but unfortunately it doesn't charge the tablet while using it. Even if I use an usb hub or the adapter directly.
But the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is charging well while using it...

It seems Kineteka (manufacturer of the breakout board seen in the guide) no longer exists. Does anyone have an idea where something similar might be found?
I've got an galaxy Note 10.1 2014 too,and order the lava tl-002 adapter now. It should work, i got a p605,the lte version. I think, the problem is,the p600 (without lte) have a complete different hardware (exynos),i got one before, and some adapters for usb works complete different. In two days, the adapter will arrive and i will report,

i have installed Samsung Tab2 GT-P3100 in my car,did everything as in diagram for charge and host, but was getting red cross very often, tried one thing and it works for a day already, just connected positive 5v power for host usb socket from main power feed, from 7/8 pin, just left 6 pin not connected,so USB is getting positive lead from main power, not tablet
Great job! I use ready product (TL-002) from Lavalink for connecting my gamepad with the Samsung Galaxy Tab S. It provides OTG/Host Charge for Samsung Tabs. Meaning, you can simultaneously charge and use USB peripherals at the same time. As much as I can see from their specs, there are few elements to consider. Not every Tab supports this functionality (kernel issue), plus, there are 2 components (hardware + 5pin cable) to make a data & charging possible. Cheers!

Trying to mod a Lenovo 11e Chrombook to have HDD?

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Chromebook 11e that I want to turn into a Windows machine. The interesting thing with the 11e is that its motherboard is very identical to the Windows Touch Version of the ThinkPad 11e. The case was reused for both models. SO it actually has an empty cut out for a 2.5" HDD. The thing is the Motherboard connection for the HDD is was not soldered on (obviously because it is a Chromebook with built-in 16gb of SSD. Chromebooks never have/need much storage.)

If there is a way to find the connector found in the images and solder it to the empty spot on my Chromebook, I believe I can convert it into a windows machine. I've looked everywhere and can not find the 20pin connector that solders to the motherboard. I have however found the 20pin connector that plugs into the port on the motherboard. If I can't find the port. What is yall opinion of me taking the 20pin to SATA adapter and soldering it directly to the blank spot on the board? Would that even work?
Thanks for any suggestions on this little modding project of mine.
HDD mod
I have 11e yoga (glimmer) and just yesterday drilled a hole in case and now I have HDD inside and a SATA to USB connector outside case, also I want to install additional OS on internal eMMC in case when i forgot to take the SATA>USB connector. It's not very pretty but I think that it's the easiest way to mount a hard drive in this chromebook, also when it's in sleep mode i can unplug the connector and plug in before i wake it up so when i want to take it somewhere it's not a problem.
And what important despite that it's and old HDD it's faster than the eMMC memory.
Sadly because I have new account limitations I can't post any photos how i made it

Did you find the connector and did you do it?
I bought a cheap 11e with a 16GB eMMC. It got room for an HDD/SSD but it's also lacking that connector. Was thinking same thing, would it be doable to solder on a connector and attach a HDD or SDD. And which parts would be needed.
I can't see your pictures though.

My current set up is ChormOS installed on the eMMC (I like to switch back and forth) then Windows 10 installed on a Micro SD card in the SDHC slot. I used a Micro SD card to Sata adapter I bought off Aliexpress inserted in my Windows computer so I could install Windows 10 to the 128gb Micro SD using recovery tools USB (The Windows recovery enviroment was fooled into thinking that it was a normal HDD lol). Thats how I am currently running Windows.
Unfortunately It seems the connector is a dead end, as there need be capacitors that route the Sata power. Upon investigating I discovered that the Windows version of the board is slightly different, so its difficult to reverse engineer (at least for me I'm not very circut board knowledgeable lol). I met a user on reddit who also had simmilar request. They were able to Add a SSD by using a Sata to USB 3.0 adapter, which they soldered to the inside contacts of the USB 3.0 of the motherboard. Thus giving them an internal Hard drive (at the cost of loosing the usb of course). I was intending to do the same, however I plan to use a USB 3.0 pcb hub that I found on ebay to retain use of my USB port and gain two additional internal USB ports. Mind you I haven't had time to work on this project as of late, so I'm not sure how it will pan out. Here is a imgur link to photos showing the "Sata to USB 3.0 adapter" soldered to the main motherboard of the Lenovo 11e (as well as a comparison photo of the chrome and windows version of board). The soldering to USB seems to work pretty well for them so I dont see why my hub idea wouldn't work. Only thing in question would be power drain, I suppose.
Thanks for the detailed info and pictures! Interesting! Sounds like a good idea with the USB adapter.
I haven't decided yet which route to go, or if I should continue with this project. I've struggled to get it to boot from USB and I guess it needs to be flashed with RW-LEGACY firmware to make that happen.
Btw. how does Windows 10 run on it?
Is it the 1st gen 11e you have?
EDIT: I did flash it with RW-LEGACY and booting from USB works.
RW-LEGACY? You should get UEFI using this guide. Works fantastic!
And yes, I'm using 1st gen Chromebook 11e (the non-touch one, just to be clear)
The Windows 1909 image I use to install works fine as long as I run "windows debloater" or "winslap", and then disable updates. Once I start updating is when it slows down and things get messed up. I should probably configure my own stripped down image of Windows 10, but I just haven't had the time. Upon a fresh install, I can download and play Minecraft and it runs smooth enough. I've had to reinstall windows and start over three times now, however. I probably get too carried away and download too much stuff, and that is what causes massive slowdown to the point It's just faster to reinstall. Besides my clunky storage management and process drain I put on the computer by running programs just a tad to strong for it, Windows 10 runs smoothly when not doing those thing. Overall I'm impressed with what you can get away with on a Chromebook of all things!
