[Q] PC as media server - how to do.. - Xperia Z2 Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone!
I am trying to work out how to use my PC as a media server with my Xperia Tablet Z2 and can't seem to work it out.
I have googled, but seem to be missing something. I need to go out for now, but will try again to understand how to do this and post back here later with the steps that I tried.
If anyone has any advice, it will be much appreciated!
Ofiaich

The magic word is DLNA.
Any DLNA media server will do:
- twonky
- plex.tv
- XBMC
- https://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/
- more

Hi ranf,
thanks, I know I need to be checking out DLNA but still no success to pair the Xperia Z2 tablet with the PC.
I can see on the tablet in settings, media server settings, and if I enter that sub-menu, I can see SGP512 and Share media shows I am connected to my home network.. - Your media is available on "my home network" network.
But the PENDING DEVICES and REGISTERED DEVICES are empty.
So I am wondering how to pair or add a device?
In Windows 8.1 control panel, Homegroup Sharing Options I can see my Xperia Tablet Z2 is there in the list.
off to search more but any advice welcomed,
Ofiaich

I suggest the following:
In Windows:
Right click the media folder you want to share
Go to Share with... > Specific people
Add 'Everyone' with permission 'Read'
On your tablet:
Install Root Explorer
Open Root Explorer and open a new Network (SMB) tab
Navigate to your PC
Touch and media file to open it
This doesn't need anything special and it works with files other than just media files.

Hi Ofiaich
don't mix up client and server side.
If you want to use your tablet as client pick:
- Album app for photos
- Movies app for videos
- Walkman app for music

Thanks Ricky D and ranf,
Ricky D, what Root Explorer do you use? I have a ES File Explorer that has a root explorer in it's menus but it seems not to work on the Z2.

I suggest Root Explorer not because it is a root explorer but because it allows streaming of SMB file shares without needing to download the file to a local folder first.

Root. Explorer by Speed Software? Costs £3.00? Not worried on cost, just want to get the correct one!

I think Explorer by Speed Software is the same but without the root access, and it's free.

Installed Explorer and added a Network SMB tab. I then get a box with name, domain, server, user-id and password!
Pressing Scan doesn't find servers! I'm not sure what to add to the fields!

I simply use Bubbleupnp from the play store to Stream audio/Video from my PC to the WDTV. On the Windows PC I have installiert Tversity media Server as DLNA Server. Done!
To Stream YouTube etc. to the WDTV, I use sempervidlinks from the play store.
For Deezer etc. The Xposed-Module from bubbleupnp can be used.
OT: I hate typing longer texts with the touch screen @Sony: Just release the BKC50!

Thanks BabelHuber!
I will check out these tomorrow!!
I still cannot understand why I cannot connect to my PC using Z2 > Settings > Xperia Connectivity > Media Server Settings!
I can't understand why no devices are recognised...

Update !
I can see the Sony Xperia Z2 on my Sony Smart TV now and play photo's, music and videos from the Z2 to the Smart TV! <--- sorted
I can see the PC in media on the Sony Xperia Z2 and the Sony TV but I cannot load any content to the Z2 or the Smart TV.
On the PC, I can see both the Z2 and Smart TV in control panel home group and have attached a picture.
On the PC's Media Player, I can see photo, music and video content, so I feel these files are in the correct folders.
So near!!

Put in the IP address of your PC and your PC user name and password. It may help to set your PC to a static IP on your network.
This method may not be suitable if your PC is a laptop that you use on the move a lot as a dynamic IP will be less hassle.
If this isn't working out have a look into "Remote Share" feature in the newest FW which will mount a shared folder from your PC as though it was local storage.

Thanks Ricky D for your reply!
I have done that, and if I open Media on the Z2, and look for connected devices, I can see My_PC in the list.
If I press on that I can see activity suggesting that content is being loaded, but this goes on and on and on!
I know my PC has a lot of content, but I thought it would pick up siub-folders!
I guess part of my problem is that I don't know what I should expect to see!! Can't find any screenshot on the web to help me so far!

Important notes:
"Share name" should be the shared name of the directory you wish to browse (sub directories wil be included)
Host can be the PC name I believe but I prefer to stick with a static IP

Thanks Ricky D!
00.37 here..! I will check all tomorrow and report back!
I think all is working now on the Z2 and using ES File Explorer, I can access my PC and the attached USB drives.
I didn't have success with Root Explorer!
I can also connect my Z2 to my Sony Smart TV now and the Z2 content can be played on the Sony Smart TV!
I can see my PC on my Sony Smart TV but no content is shown...Not sure why that is..
I know that a way around this is to connect my Z2 to the PC and 'mirror' the Z2 to the Sony Smart TV,
I wish I could understand why the PC doesn't share with the Sony Smart TV smoothly...

Ricky D! Your pictures are screenshots from Root Explorer, I think. I cannot get similar screens to yours but guessing is because my Z2 is not rooted.
Is it worthwhile rooting?

[Q] Access my Windows 7 network

This is probably a n00b question (which is appropriate since I'm a n00b . . .) but I have a home server running Win7. All my movies and photos and music are on it. I have no problems using USB to transfer media to my Streak (and to my awesome, dirt cheap Chinese tablet), but it would be great to be able to just connect to my network shares and copy the files over the WiFi. Is there an Android app that can do this? Paid apps OK.
If you just want to copy the files you can use ES File Explorer, SwiFTP, AndFTP, or you can turn your phone into a Samba server and mount your SD Card as a network share and use windows explorer to copy to your phone.
ES Explorer worked great getting to FTP server. Getting to a LAN computer required me to enter the LAN IP address as a "server" and also woked fine.

[Q] Network File Transfers & Browser App?

can anyone tell me a app with which i can connect to the files that are on my file server
ES file explorer in android for example ... but webos?
thanks!
Interested in this as well..
if you know how to use ssh and sftp, that would be your best option, since there's an ssh server and sftp app in the preware app browser.
that preware app seems to have bricked my device :-( so first I have to fix that, but you are right, that was my first thought as well.... I will try that as soon as the device is fixed (long night :-( )
[Q] Network File Transfers
Anyone know an app or method for transferring files over to the Touchpad? The actual file, not just streaming video or whatnot. I picked up a touchstone, so it would be cool not to have to plug wires in... ever.
I'm a similar boat but would actually be ok with just the ability to stream media from a windows file share.
Closest I've found but haven't tested is the following:
ugh I can't post external links
do a google search for webos xorg and it should be the 3rd link down titled: IOBox - PC File Syncing (xorg tools) - WebOS Internals
from what I see it's just a way to create a mountpoint to a windows CIFS share. Would be nicer if something like android's file expert existed.
To have a simple network browser on the Touchpad would make it 10x more usable.
that is one of the things webos lacks of :/
i cant tell my girlfriend to ssh onto the homeserver just to watch a movie or pictures.
maybe some dev could make an ugly but working app for that
with preware you can use ssh and sftp for cli transfer.
but a network file browser would be alot nicer imho

No, but you could set it up for her on the tablet so she just has to launch it and then set up and sftp client on her computer such as filezilla. After that, it's just a matter of dragging and dropping files into filezilla.

If you have sshd on your tablet, you can easily use a gui client on your computer to connect to it like filezilla.
I was hoping there was a convenient app for us lazy people...

Yep, nothing really out there until someone writes one for it
is there any news or ideas?...does any one know the devs of ES file explorer ... is there such a huge difference between web os and android ...
.. 10 dollars for such an app from me
(having that app - I would not need any android ...)
I use this:
http://www.precentral.net/tbtransfer
still in alpha but good enough for small files. Not recommended for files >100Mb as it takes much longer compared to usb cable.
perfect, thanks.
is that any unsecure, not beeing protected in any way?...
I think it only works with computers connected on the same router.

I understand you are looking for an app, but I installed the uberkernel which supports mounting of remote shares. There is a good how to if you look on google but basically you update your kernel to uberkernal or f15c, install Internalz from preware, add a line to the file /etc/fstab, and execute a mount -a command in a command line. Now I am able to browse my network share and copy files back and forth. The only problem I ran into was that I was trying to mount a sub folder of my shared folder but you can only mount the shared folder itself. I went crazy trying to figure that one out when it was actually rather obvious...
Wifi file transfer
Is there an app for touchpad like ES File Explorer where you can transfer files to your desktop/tablet wirelessly through a local wifi network?
I use wifi media sync works perfect for me.
Cheers
John

Looking for a wireless browser to view all folders on phone

Hi Everyone
Can anyone suggest a program that i can view ALL my phone folders from my pc via wifi.
Looking for an application like 'dropspot'.
i dont mind if the app connects via smb, ftp or http.
i would preferably like the app to be for non rooted phones (so my missus can use this as well).
So far, my search has ended with all applications just being able to browse the 'SDcard' folder.
i have tried 'Andreas Liebig' and 'The Olive Tree' ftp server programs but neither of them are as good as 'dropspot'
Can anyone suggest an alternative (free/paid) to 'dropspot'???
Thanks
try swift ftp or airdroid
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
A couple more to ponder over. There is Wifi File Explorer Pro and Wifi File Transfer Pro. You just need to enter a address in your pc browser to view your phones files. Already mentioned AirDroid is particularly good because it is free and does alot more.
Just to add, these are from the play store.
Thanks guys, Wifi File Explorer Pro and Wifi File Transfer Pro both did the job great
Also loving swift ftp!!!
Thanks for the suggestions

[Q] DLNA sever help

Hi All,
Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to post this question and/or it's already been asked.
I have an old phone (Nexus 1). I want to use it as a DLNA server so that I can store music and videos on this device and then view/play this content on other devices (For this example, the Archos 101 G9 512MB).
To setup the DLNA server on the Nexus 1 I installed the 'Servers Ultimate' app and setup a simple DLNA server. I have a SD card connected to the Nexus 1 which has a couple of videos on it. I start the DLNA server on the Nexus 1 and it runs without any problems.
On the Archos 101 G9 I open the stock 'Files' app, select 'Network', select 'Media server (UPnP)', refresh the list but no server are found.
I've tried searching for solutions on Google but have yet to find anything useful.
The plan is, once setup to run within my personal network, I will setup port forwarding on my router so that I can access this content when outside of my internal network (E.g. through 3G). Not so sure if this is possible as DLNA looks more like an automatic internal system rather than having options to specify the address of my DLNA server.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks,
Dan
Good evening.
These cases are always complex, as there are multiple variables.
Let's start with the easiest ones: are the devices connected to the same access point? If not, are they in the same lan? If they are, you can test and ran fing to see if the archos is able to "see" the nexus 1. Please post here after testing with fing.

Thanks for the quick response.
Both devices are connected to the same access point. My home network is just a single Wifi router. From the Archos I can see the Nexus 1 in Fing.
Also, Just installed the 'BubbleUPnP UPnP/DLNA' app on my Galaxy SIII to see if that can connect to the DLNA server hosted on the Nexus 1. In the 'setup network wizard' when I enter my server address as http://192.168.1.4:8086 the following is returned: The remote server could be joined but returned HTTP error code 404 (Not Found). Obviously this is indicating that there is something wrong with the configuration at the Nexus end rather than the SII or Archos. Any ideas?
Having doubts about Bubble app now...possibly this app only works when bubble is installed at both ends (On the player and on the server?) If you know that this is the case, do you know an alternative which will let me test a connection to the DLNA server from the SIII?
Finally, not sure if it works this way but if I go to the address (http://192.168.1.4:8086) in a browser on my laptop I get the following message: FORBIDDEN: No directory listing.
(Sorry - keep editing as trying to provide as much info as possible)

That's a nice amount of info. Okay, no we have ruled out the chance of network not working between these devices.
Have you added media files to the DLNA server? Also that 404 error sounds like there are no files. You said you are using Servers Ultimate, so maybe you could try if CIFS/SMB works? I don't think 8086 is the default port for DLNA, which would explain why Archos does not find it. It looks in the default ports.

I've managed to see files (and play them) if I host the DLNA server on my SIII (Not using the 'Servers Ultimate' app). I ended up using 'Pixel DMS Media Server'. Seemed a bit flakey but need to do more testing. Not so sure about ports but that might make sense as Pixel Media Server uses UDP Port 1900 (Hard coded).
Annoying, if I installed exactly the same app on my Nexus, the device doesn't show on the Archos. I think I'm going to copy some more files to the SD card which currently resides in the Nexus and see what difference that makes.
I think as far as discussing this on the Archos forum goes, this is closed as the files are appearing on the Archos. Thanks for your help.
Dan
have you tried using something other than stock file app on archos?

[Q] Media from PS3 Media Server to XTZ

If you are trying to play media files BS Player is good, or if just general contents on shared folders on your PC then try ES File Explorer, both are easy to use, and I've not had any issues with them. I don't think there is any option on the Tablet to turn on sharing.
