Picked up an old EVO and having some issues - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I picked up an EVO 4G LTE and was going to see if I can get it set up so i can give it to my son as his first smart phone but I am unable to access the phone. The ring does not pull up to unlock the phone. I am not familiar with sense as I have been on the note until moving to the lg g2. This phone is on 4.1, 3.16.651.3 710RD. I cannot even get the unlock token for the bootloader. I have not met a phone that I have not been able to root, unlock and customize yet and THIS PHONE!!! I am looking for anyone who might know a trick because I have been searching through these forums and others(which i normally never do). Please let me know if there is a fix or if this phone is scrap. Thanks

Your screen issue sounds like a bad digitizer. As far as getting the unlock token, hit the top link in my sig and look at the links regarding how to root the device and make sure you're going through all the steps correctly.

Thanks, I've went through the process multiple times. I will try again. The ring moves, just does not go all the way up. If the digitizer is bad then I may be it of luck. I had read on another forum where there was the same issue and that flashing a ROM had fixed the problem. I'll look it up but I don't think I'll be able to post the link

Hi you can try doing a factory reset in boot loader to see if that does anything about the lockring not going all the way up if it doesn't its the digitizer acting up

[Q] Alternative to HTC dev unlock

has anyone tried the alternative method to using HTC dev for unlocking the boot loader on the 4g LTE, i would try it but i don't have the phone quite yet, also it seems pretty low risk.

Bricked my brand new phone already....

Alright so long story short I tried to rush through rooting my new phone here without checking everything out too much (complete fail on my part...but I wanted it rooted before I went out to the bars to save some battery life haha...ironic, now I'll have no phone tonight).
I went to root it and it somehow got screwed up...the sense launcher wasn't showing up along with the fact that when I pulled down the notification bar and hit settings, it crashed, so I went to unroot it with the RUU 1.13.651.1 and when I got to the comparison screen it said I had 1.13.651.1_R2...and being already frustraited at this point, decided how worse could it get? Tried it out, not my brand new phone is stuck at the black htc screen....fail.
Anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I tried running it again to no avail...I'm about to try the other RUU to just see if it works, but I'm running out of other ideas. Anyone that can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
awesome first post and congrats on your new paperweight

he could try to unlock his bootloader, manually flash the recovery and flash a rom thru there ^_^
but since he even failed at one click root, how will he do all that?
can u get to the bootloader?
does ur comp recognize it when u plug it in? even if it's still stuck

Not that hard if he actually takes his time and reads before doing anything. If he can unlock the bootloader with htcdev and flash a recovery he should be ok

Easy. Hold the volume buttons down while you turn the phone on then choose to reformat or restore or whatever the option is.

Well, the good news is the phone is not hard bricked, it has a soft brick and is recoverable. Redownload the RUU and try again, but make sure you have the correct one. If that doesn't work you'll have to unlock with htcdev, flash a recovery and flash a ROM. Then try the RUU again if you no longer want root.
Like others have said...it sounds like there is hope for your phone yet. Take your time and CAREFULLY follow instructions for whichever process you choose. Hopefully you post again later saying you were able to fix it.

First off don't feel too bad, No matter how sure you know what your doing we all make mistakes. I paperweighted mine while manually installing some mods last night. If you would of watched the how to RUU the evo lte you would of seen that that the black HTC screen is perfectly normal. The phone will sit on that screen for like 10 minutes sometimes it will reboot and sometimes you will get differnt screens. The key is to have the drivers handy and install them if ur PC ever calls the device android 1.0.
The RUU version 1.13.651.1_R2 is the one you should be using. As scary as it is you just need to be patient, and let the RUU run it may look like nothing is happening but something is.

Past Samsung guy lost with HTC

All my past Android Phones have been Samsung. This past week I got my HTC One. I am loving it. Thing is I am finding HTC a lot harder to learn. I might have been this way with Samsung when I went from Windows to them. But it seems like HTC has made making your phone custom harder just to make people not do it.
Right now I am loving my phone as is. I am not seeing a huge reason to root my phone right now. Part of me does not want to unlock the boot loader yet because I know once you unlock it it will show that you have even if you re-lock it. Once the CM team has this phone down I could see myself breaking down and installing it. I love them for my Nexus 7 and when I had them for my Captivate.
I have been told I need to get a code to unlock my boot loader right away before AT&T locks this phone down. Is that something I can get and just wait till I want to use it later and not touch my phone?
I am a more visual learner. In searching I can find written processes to unlock or tweak this phone. But I can not find Videos. Does anyone know of some good youtube videos for DIY's on this phone?
Just wondering how hard is it to brick this phone? I know my Captivate you had to make a big mistake to do it. I know the Infuse it was almost impossible. I just want to make sure I know what I am getting into with HTC for this. I have seen way too many people take a great phone and make it into a paperweight.
Thanks for any help or tips
Try here. Good luck.

I too too was and or is a long time Samsung user....it is a whole different process with HTC then Samsung.... this is the toolkit i used on my htc one....pretty straight forward...u can follow the instructions and get ur unlock token now and use it whenever u like if u choose so....

[Q] Well. My curiousity led to a hard-bricked phone

Well. My curiousty led to a hard-bricked phone
It's definetly official. I am not going to install any more custom roms after this. To make my story breif. I aquired a motorola atrix 2 phone, and had read it could accomdate a custom rom, so I used a one click root method program and the program said it had done its job. I booted into the recovery and installed the rom, which ended in an infinite reboot. Great, so I read more on how to revert back to firmware using rsd lite. I did this, but the battery was dead. so I went out and purchased anther battery, attempted the restore, phone restart, then BOOM. it stayed black and now it wont come on. wtf.
Can any please recommend the proper cable I have to order to get the phone back working>?

Thank you. But an experienced repair guy said my phone wasn't responding to neither the USB jtag or the fast boot. So my phone is dead forever? Should I start digging its grave?
Sure sounds this way, and you shouldn't be doing JTAG through the USB port anyway unless your phone is something special I've never heard of
But in truth rooting your phone won't damage it, it just gives someone the opportunity to do so. I'm a firm believer in rooting all androids so long as they read and understand what they are doing, its very hard to brick a phone if you know what you're doing
So although this phone may be dead forever (unless you find someone who for sure knows the proper way to JTAG it) then still consider rooting your next one, just be sure to completely understand what's going on, and try to stay away from one click roots, its hard to learn anything from this
Best of luck on your next phone
*side note, if you still have warranty and your phone is completely unresponsive chances are you will get your warranty exchange, just play dumb and say "I was playing angry birds and it just froze, now it won't turn on"

I wish I had warranty on this thing. I got it second hand from craigslist. However i've managed to acquire an HTC inspire 4G, what an upgrade from a motorola cliq xt! I would love to install jelly bean on this thing but after messing up the Atrix 2 i'm scared I will F*ck this one up too. I can never find clear and concise instructions on the internet. Every web page I visit, it seems to be someones personal way of doing it. Steps not mentioned, or instructions written for intermediate users. For example, Every video or piece of instruction i've watched on youtube regarding booting into the fast boot on the atrix 2, said something about holding volume up and power button upon booting and I would see something on the top of the screen. However that did not work, First I had to use the volume down and power button, then I would get to this fastboot screen where those recovery options werent available, from there I had to hold both volume buttons down and press the power button twice which would bring me to the recovery options screen. thats just one example, and even then for some reasons I didn't have all the recovery options the instructions spoke of... for example. Very annoying and frustrating. On a side note, is there anyone on this site who lives in the US that can unbrick my atrix 2? The guy who repair phones I took it to said theres a device for 250.00 bucks he's waiting to get that can unbrick any device. However he doesnt have the funds and had gotten laid off work. I am just having a hard time believing a simple soft user error could permanently damage my device forever and that as sophiscated as our technology has gotten there's absolutely no way to revive it.

I can't attest to the videos you saw, but for most androids this is the best site with the most info, I only suggest being sure how to root before you do it, and to understand how the method works as well. When your not understanding this is when bricks happen.
I know it can be lots of reading and lots of questions but in the long run its worth the time
As for the JTAG equipment there are many who have it and you can easily spend less than 250 on getting the proper stuff.
Every logicboard is different so maybe this machine he speaks of has a wide variety of cables that come with it, but he's still paying too much
Anyway, most people seem to charge 50$ or so to JTAG it back, if that's more than the phone is worth to you just sell it on eBay for parts

HERE IS YOUR PHONES FORUM
you will find links to all the guides you need here, always read the stickies in each section, this tends to have the important info you need
then anything your not sure about should be asked in the proper place within this forum for the best answers
example, question on how to root should be asked in the how to root thread for best chance of a good answer, question on how to flash a new radio should be asked in a thread pertaining to this
im sorry but i dont know enough about your phone specificly to help further but hopefully the members in your device specific forum will

[Q] Probable brick, unsure, please help!

I was given a htc DNA and it's been one headache after another. It had a cracked digitizer, s-off, eng hboot, unlocked boot loader and a custom recovery installed on it when it was given to me. Trying to make a long story short, I ended up having to replace the board with the sim card reader on it and immediately after putting the new board in the cameras quit working along with the speakers and microphone. I was able to get all but the cameras working, but then I bricked it, and here is how. I was attempting to return back to stock, relocked the boot loader, was attempting to use a ruu which wasn't working, so I decided to unlock my boot loader again. The story ends with me attempting the unlock with ez-unlock, and when I did it said successful and I was able to keep using the phone as normal, but after turning the phone off it wouldnt turn back on, and the only sign of life comes when I plug it into my computer. As soon as i connect it to my computer, htc sync manager opens up but says no phone connected, device manager will show the phone as my htc and android 1.0.. I've experienced similar signs of life from an htc vivid, but it's issues were due to a bad battery, so I am hoping for the best but expecting this to end with jtag. Can anybody help me out please, it would be great to not require jtag services, but it would be better yet if I could gain a better understanding of at least what went wrong. Thank you

Sadly no, I can't get it to boot at all. I also need to mention that the lights don't come on when it's plugged in either. I'm thrown for a loop by it all because my computers will still react to it if I hook it up to them with usb, but that's about all they will do. Why would sync manager open up when I plug it in, but then state that there is no device connected.
Ive seen where people have said to leave phone charging for 24 hours without trying to turn it on and it worked. I've also seen people run a calibration test on the battery but I forgot how to do it.

EZ-Unlock is an unsupported method by the DNA hardware. It will always cause a hard-brick. Which you have done. I did this to myself at one point, too. I tried EZ-Unlock and it hard-bricked my DNA. Call Verizon. Tell them that it just randomly started doing this. Don't mention root or anything. They'll replace it for free. That's what I did.
Sorry about that bud. Try to do some more research before modding your phone next time.

Well thank you for your feedback, and assistance. I owe most everything I know about phones to XDA and it's members! Regarding my situation with the DNA, yup sure enough it is bricked. I figured it was, but have had similar reactions from a bad battery in the past, so.. Regarding the process of unlocking the boot loader, this is the first time I've ever directly seen anything regarding the cid. Not sure if maybe it has been part of the process in ways that I was unaware of in the past with other phones or if this is more device specific, but either way would anybody possibly know where I could find more in depth information regarding this and if there is anybody who is knowledgeable with this that wouldn't mind helping somebody out?
sorry for the run on sentences lol
oh, and thank you for the referral to Zarboz, I will definitely be getting in touch with him.
