Kinovo on-dash APT-X Bluetooth & Mic adapter for Car Stereo -Behind dash installation
This thread will show you how to add APT-X bluetooth music/phone adapter behind your dash for a nice, clean, hidden-like install.
Got tired of crappy sounding bluetooth from my phone to my car stereo. So I got an adapter for my car stereo that uses the new Hi-Def APT-X bluetooth codec (cleaner highs & lows, higher bitrate).
If you've got $500, then you can get the new Kenwood car stereo that offers APT-X.
If you don't have $500, then you can be like me and get the $40 adapter that just plugs into the car stereo aux port.
Works great!
Has built-in microphone for voice calling and Google Now and Utter usage. And a few hard buttons for music and phone control.
The Kinovo is available from the mfg for $39, which is the same price I got it for on Amazon Prime.

Stock, this Kinovo uses an external power adapter that plugs into your cig lighter. I didn't like the wire mess though, so I cut the power wire and spliced it to a USB connector which I then plugged into the back of my car stereo for power.
So when the car stereo turns on, so does my Kinovo.
And it seems the Kinovo auto-re-connects to my phone upon power up. And it all happens pretty fast. Very happy withe results.
Music that sounds just as good as a hard-wired AUX connection but without wires between my phone and car stereo.
And it sounds way better than standard A2DP's SBC codec which is what 99.9% of all other Bluetooth adapters & car stereo's use.
If you're on AOSP ROM's then ignore this because you don't have the APT-X codec. Sorry, you're screwed. But check out the thread linked in my signature if you want to get it going someday.
If you're on TouchWiz, then read on and enjoy higher quality Bluetooth sound than you're used to!!
Size comparison between the Avantree Cara (on right) vs. the Kinovo (on the left).
I sent the Cara back to the vendor. Too big and too many wires.
First, you cut off the cig lighter and strip the wire back to expose the positive and negative.
Note that this is crappy, tiny headphone sized wire. Ugh.
The postive and negative are "painted" to keep them from shorting out on each other.
So grab your BIC and give each wire a *quick* flick of the lighter. Just enough to make the wire go "poof" and it'll burn off the paint so you can solder.
Here, I've got the wires twist tied to a regular old USB connector.
Red to red, black to black.
Any wire other than red or black, can just be cut off since it'll be unused.
Any, and I mean just about any normal USB cable will work fine.
Go ahead and tin the wires with your soldering tool.
Here we are in my car now.
The top connector is the USB cable that I spliced into the Kinovo's power wire.
The bottom, female USB is the USB cable that comes out of the back of my car stereo.
Just plug the two together.
The Kinovo comes with its own double-sided tape.
But I had some really strong 3M tape in my toolbox, so I used that instead.
Put it where you want to mount the Kinovo.
Since I wanted to run the wires BEHIND my dash for a clean install, I had to get a little creative.
My dash cover has a very tight seal to the dash. So I broke out my Dremel and buzzed a tiny 1/4" sized indent into it.
You can't see this from the seated position. So even when I remove the Kinovo someday, it won't be an eyesore.
Nice, the Kinovo wire fits into the indent nicely. No squished wire!!

My car stereo's 3.5mm aux port is on the front right corner of the deck.
The install bezel for the deck is loose enough that I was able to fit the Kinovo's 3.5mm audio cable between it w/out squishing.

is there any chance I can configure this to connect to TWO phones simultaneously. ONE for audio and ONE for calls only?
I have a Note II (may be switching to Note III if it survives a flight to 5000 feet this summer) that I use for music and gps navigation and of course My Note III I use for making calls.
I would like the Music and GPS audio from the Note II and the CALL audio from the Note III
anyway to do this? ie media audio from the note II phone audio from the Note III ?
I guess I could install 2 of them one for each phone. I would just have to remember to "pause" one to take calls on the other.
I assume pushing the large button works as a "pause/play" like on most bluetooth units?
how is the call quality? speaker feedback? Mic Quality? Noise Reduction?

I'm not crazy about the lights on the himbox. In a dark car, it might look cool, or it might be annoying?
One thing to keep in mind on the himbox, is the power/aux cable split has shorter length than the kinovo. It's probably long enough for most people, but it is one thing to consider when you go to buy a device.

Mic quality seems to work just find but I haven't spent a lot of time on the phone. I mostly use the mic for Google Now and it works well.
The user in the link below compared the Kinovo to the Himbox and said they liked the Himbox better because it could connect to more than one phone?

Sealed it. Dual usb power available in colors (where I plan to mount lights wont be a problem) $4 cheaper and this one is directly powered by usb which is a huge plus to me. I dont have to tear is apart to elimjnate the 12v conversion lime I would have done with the kinivo unit to get around the split media problem I will just use two of them on a splitter. Press to pause music then answer the phone on the other one. Although that wont stop the gps from blaring in during a call

Good catch, I didn't notice that.
A built-in USB port for charging is a huge plus on the himbox. :good:
They both have usb charging but the kinovo its permanently attached to its 12v plig while the himbox is just usb power. So with the himbox you basically get a dual 2/1 amp usb plug free since I wont use it to power the himbox (will wire usb power behind the stereo.
Although. I kust thougbt of a huge potential problem does the himbox auto link like the kinovo does when powere up? That is abdeal breaker differwnce to me. Ie I want that feature badly.
WOW bro... man after my own heart... first the case ... now the BT add on in the car. I have not messed with my BT in the car, my Boss system already has it but it only does Phone. Trying to figure away to flash it, so it plays audio.
Years ago I discovered these adapter pods that work with each manufacturer's OEM stereo via harness on eBay. They gave the ability to attach a 30-pin iPod/iPhone to your car stereo as well as handsfree. What I did was attach this to the back of the car stereo, then something like the Auris 30-pin bluetooth w/ APT-X. Power to the unit is through the OEM stereo, so I'm not taking up the charger plug except for my phone/tablet.
As long as your OEM stereo is already at a decent quality, what you can achieve with these parts is essentially a hidden bluetooth system w/ APT-X quality that also preserves the function of being able to control the music if you have mechanical steering wheel buttons.Obviously if your car has an iPod auxiliary, you can just use the 30-pin to bluetooth adapter.
Guys, when I did my testing the other day, I must have had the Kinovo on an always-on power source. Because when I left for an hour and then came back, the Kinovo auto-reconnected to my phone without any user-interaction required.
But now that I've got the Kinovo permanently installed, I'm not seeing that behavior.
Once I'm gone for an hour and come back, I have to press the kinovo button to reconnect. It's a quick click, and you hear a couple beeps an boom, you're reconnected in like 1.5 seconds.
So I don't have to touch anything on my phone if Bluetooth is already turned on. But I do have to give the Kinovo a quick button click.
Got my himbox. Absolutely amazing. Audibly superior quality. Reconnects to phone automatically on power up almost jnstantly. Controls work great and voice command press and hold works great.
Most impressed. Ordered a second one for the second phone and will eventually order one for each car. I mounted mine on the steering column. Perfect reach position and out of site
The second one I will eventually mount up here will put a hole in the co sole and slightly counter sync it for a nice factory look

So after further review, the Kinovo does auto reconnect if I go into a grocery store and come out some time later.
But if it's a lot longer, like the next day, then I have to reconnect manually by pressing the button.
Then I installed a free app called "Bluetooth Auto Connect" and it takes care of the reconnection for me in just a second or two. Works great. :good:

My guess is its part of the power on cycle. Ie you need to turn it off when you leave the car by connecting to power that goes on and off with the ignition. This way it powers up each time and that is when it does its auto connect routine.
Old thread but glad I found it... My avic d3 in my truck doesn't put out 5v, so it looks like I am going to have to buy a 12v to 5v converter...
I wish the manufacture of this would have just had it run off 12v... would have been so much easier to wire up. I too want the no wire look in my little ranger so clipping wires and putting it behind the dash is a must...

Did you ever get interference or noises using the above device?
I don't listen to FM at all, but I just don't want whine or noise when listening to Pandora..etc.

They are available without the USB connector also. I've used that type as well.
I don't recall either of them ever introducing any noise in my stereos.

I know many of you already use your Moguls for everything including GPS and MP3's but I wanted to share my in car setup. I'm using the Seidio charging stereo audio out car kit which swivels from portrait to landscape orientation. This is specially designed for the Mogul and allows the keyboard to be used as you can see from the photos. I have the audio out from the cradle running into my car's aux audio input for great sound quality from mp3/wma's and the gps audio. I use bluetooth when using the phone which pauses/resumes the music. I use TTN6, Live Search and Google Maps with the dcd2.1 rom with GPS and revA enabled. The whole package just works awesome!! I am so pleased compared to having a separate BT GPS receiver with my Treo 600wx. It also works great for the occasional ORB streamed TV show or movie while in traffic Here are some pics. Looks great at night too!!

Hello fellow BMW driver. I've got my Seidio dock on order for my '98 540 6-spd.
Hey SR - Glad to find someone who has actually purchased this dock.
I saw it on their site and it did look to be the most feature packed mount.
Two Questions...
1 - How good are the mounting options? (suction cup, vent clips etc...)
2 - How exactly (what type of port) does the external DC Power outlet work? (is it a USB plug? standard DC Car tube or simply a pigtail with USB Mini on it?)
Sorry I know those questions aren't exactly on topic with the thread title but your the only one I know who actually has the seido...
It was a bit pricey but I'm willing to pay for good stuff.
I have a similar setup, but I made my own car mount that does charging and audio. I can't open the KB though. I made it because the seidio was too big, bulky, expensive and overkill, and there were no other mounts that did charging and audio. See here:

What mp3 player do you use? Pocket player is awesome. I sync with my library on my computer to my 8gb microSD with WMP11 then use PocketPlayer on my mogul. The library browser is very nice. It has a touch scroll interface. I can't wait to show off to someone with an ipod touch.
Asphyx, the mounting options are basically suction cup flexible arm or air vent clips. I use the air vent clips and they work fine. They can be a bit difficult to remove once locked though. I find it vibrates and bounces around less than the suction cup arm route. The external DC power outlet has a DC tube type jack and it comes with a cigarette lighter power cable. You can also get one that wires directly into your car's power block if you want. The thing works very well. To me it seems a bit overpriced but is the only adapter I have found that will do what it does. It is very stable, holds the device well and it's easy to insert and remove the Mogul. Sound quality is great through my aux audio input and love having the keyboard open as it makes navigating WMP, Tom Tom and other software effortless.

I know it does seem expensive but it is the first one I have ever seen that will do landscape and not use the padded pincers (which press buttons you don't want pressed) to hold the unit in place...

One additional note, I opened mine up(yes, this voids the warranty) and unplugged the internal speaker. I never use that anyway and I was getting some low level buzzing from the speaker even with the volume control on the cradle turned all the way down. Maybe interference from the Mogul's radio? Not sure. Anyway, that worked fine as there is a small connector inside the unit to easily disconnect the speaker(although I am not advocating doing this). Also, sometimes the wifi button gets turned on when you slide the mogul into the cradle. not a huge issue but FYI.

So the buzz is just on the internal speaker not the audio out you ran to the Car system?
correct, it was coming from the internal speaker I think related to some interference with the phone's wifi or cellular radio but went away after I disconnected the speaker.
What software are you using to get the music to pause when a call comes in? Mine keeps playing, but you can't hear it until I hang up the phone. I use bluetooth and GSPlayer for my mp3 player.

damcis, GSPlayer is not phone-aware software. Meaning, it will keep on chugging away at your mp3's regardless of the phone calls coming in.
In order to do the automatic-pause-resume thing, you have to use something like the built in Windows Media Player or HTC Audio Manager. Both of those are aware of the phone part of your device, whereas your average software is not.
Now, as far as this in-dash setup... it looks pretty sweet. But I went a simpler and more future-proof method.
I ripped out my Nissan factory stereo and installed a Sony BT2500 bluetooth head unit. It supports A2DP, so absolutely no cables or anything are required. Basically, get in the car, press play, and whatever playlist happens to be open in your device will immediately start coming out of the car's speakers.
The quality is surprisingly good, and you don't even need to take your phone out of your pocket!!! (great for those short trips around the corner- I find that hooking up my phone to one of those units and then unplugging/plugging when I leave and come back is sometimes more of a hassle than its worth. Imagine being able to play your music just by having your phone ON you)
Now, as far as navigation goes, I bought myself one of those cheapo $5 (shipped) plastic belt holsters from ebay, which can hold the phone face in or face out.
Because my particular vehicle (Sentra) has a compartment on the center of the dashboard, I was able to mount a loop that attaches from inside the compartment and the belt holster clips onto it very easily, and holds it securely.
The advantages of doing it my way:
-If not using GPS or going on short drives, you don't actually need to connect ANYTHING! You can leave the phone in your pocket...
-No propietary parts means that this setup is future-proof, and cross-platform. The a2dp stereo will still be there when/if I switch to another phone, and when my wife drives the car, her phone syncs up and plays music as well (samsung standard fare). The OP's setup here is 6800-specific.
-When not using the device, my "holster" can unclip from the loop and stow away (holster and loop) into the compartment of my dashboard. Instant cleanup, nothing cluttering up the dashboard.
-Can hold the device, or pass it to someone else in the car without disconnecting anything. (Last night handed the phone to my sister in law in the backseat to control the music while still connected over a2dp)
-Clean, less dashboard space used, even when holster is out and car charger connected.
Disadvantages:
-Have to take it out of the holster in order to use the keyboard.
-um... that's about it?
Anyway, I'll try to take some pictures soon and post them so you can see what I'm talking about.

works fine. Even at 1x data.
Think about this... low quality mp3 is encoded at 64kbps. Standard/medium quality (often referred to as CD-Quality) mp3 is 128kbps. Higher Quality is around 190kpbs, and audiophiles prefer to keep it at 200-300kpbs (although most people can't tell the difference at that bitrate).
If your EVDO connection is averaging 600-800kbps, its more than enough speed to stream mp3's in FULL quality.
1x data is around 120k, so even if you're not in an EVDO area, you should still be able to get at least "CD-Quality" stereo!
I used ORB to stream my mp3s from home when I first got my mogul...and it worked great...now its not working again with the new ROM
Been thinking of a car mount myself. I found out that with GStreamer I can stream music from my home MP3 server. Still need to work on how to secure it, but it would let me stream any of my music over EVDO to my phone.
Is the internal GPS worth it? Been thinking about flashing but not sure if I want to do all the work...would have to setup a windows partition on my Linux box to sync correctly
wow i like that mount and it looks like you have a 3 series! new body, thats my favorite car, i want the 335 coupe BADLY. I been using my phone as Mp3 in my Nissan maxima for the longest, works wonders and if a phone call comes in, music stops and take call from my bt headset. But a mount would make a world of difference. How much you get that mount for?
I am having issues with the adapter to bluetooth handoff and back. Using WMP, sometimes things will transfer properly to my headset, but then when the phone tries to resume music it will skip the current song saying the "Device is not ready". This is problematic because I mostly listen to podcasts and finding my place again is a PITA.
I was going to try another music program - but it sounds like many of you are having success with WMP. Are you making any tweaks to get good handoffs?
What connection order are you using. IE: Pair BT headset, plug adapter, play music???

I have this mount in my Chevy. Instead of using the suction cup or vent clip i attached a metal bracket (as seen in picture) behind the radio bezel. then i attached the mount to the metal bracket. Ran all my wires back thru dash even ran a external antanna wire. rock solid mount with no bouce or vibration.
Work great with aux input on radio.
the pictures you guys are posting look nice but they don't serve my purpose I already have my ipod connected to my car stereo via ipod jack so i can't use and aux input instead because i want to listen to my music from my ipod. I once seen a holster for a phone that had a speaker attached to it thats the type of setup i need so i can still hear the tom tom announcements over the music through a little amplified speaker... DO THEY MAKE SOMETHING LIKE THIS FOR THE MOGUL??????

I bought this one:
and I can confirm that it will charge, you can listen to the music coming from the TC (using the AUX from a car radio or plug a headset in the 3,5) and Tomtom navigation. Yours appears to me more sophisticated, since it has a 2 connectors with Mic input (wonder if the TC can handle that) and a power status light.

That one is stereo output only. It does not include mic input.
I think both are similar, just the HTC one costs $20 while the one ---Alex--- got can be found for $4 in some stores. Do you really need 2.5 mic?
The HTC one is having some troubles, cuz when I asked HTC about it they said they haven't even tested it themselves. I guess only UK has made a few samples which is why the expansys expected date keeps 'slipping' and is always about 3-4wks away...
So, both multifunction cables support 3.5mm input with mic, while all others (incl. the single miniUSB-to-3.5mm) do not support a full headset with mic, right?
Getting either multifunction cable should be fine for a 3.5mm headset?

I received mine in less than 10 days, The Netherlands. However, it depends on customs as well. Once a large parcel was in the custom area for more than 2 weeks.
how is the audio quality from this cable? Will the audio coming from the car be in full stero with bass?
I bought one of the Car cradles for the HTC Touch, which has a mic jack on it. When i hooked it into my cars stero it sounded horrible... was mono sound i think and no bass at all.

I think it's decent. But cannot tell judge the quality, because the audio system my car is not decent

It is full stereo. I adjust bass using the car radio controls, mine works excellent.
I was cheap, and also angered at HTC for not including a miniUSB -> 3.5/2.5mm adapter with the purchase of the device, so what I did was I modified the crap quality headphones that came with it, cut off the buds, and soldered the wires to a normal 3.5 mm cable so i could listen to it in my car.
The only trouble is that I can't charge and listen at the same time, So I guess I'll have to get one of these adapters.
I was even more pissed when I purchased a motorola miniUSB -> 2.5mm stereo and found it incompatible with HTC's miniUSB pinout. Guess I should have researched that before I bought it, oh well. Another thing that blows is that all the local stores only carry the motorola adapter, and not the HTC one. Figures.
II hate ordering things tho, cause they take so long to get here.. so I just said F it and cut/soldered so I could listen in my car with the AUX input in my dashboard until the one I just ordered comes .

thats cool, this one smaller, cheaper and on sale. But the producr page doens't list the Touch does it? Looks like it will fit though.

All HTC devices have the same mini USB pinout (AFAIK -- I'm 99.9% sure of thise).
It has a bunch of HTC devices listed on the page, so I figure it will in fact work with the TC.
Also, the fact that the page says "Not compatible with Motorola Phones" is also indicitave that it will work for ALL HTC products.
I know this becuase I bought the motorola one at RadioShack and it did not work with the TC.
I researched it and found that the Motorola miniUSB pinout is in fact a little different than HTC's.
I will report back as soon as I get it.
The total price was somewhere around $8 and I'm scheduled to get it sometime next week before friday.
I like the design of that one because there is no cord; it just snaps right into the usb slot and doesn't "dangle" from the device.
Also, to answer your question about the audio quality...
My home made one works 100% perfectly in my car.
The quality is amazing. I have a 6 speaker Bose system in my car too
So if the quality was bad, I would definately be able to tell.

I think the sound was crop in the car-holder i had because it had its own audio-out jack. I think I will order this as well, its worth a try for $8.
Wow, I ordered this on Saturday and it came on tuesday!...and I selected the 4-6 day shipping which was $2.50!...This is a great company, semsons & co, and the adapter is top notch...it snaps \ locks into place perfectly, and now i can charge and listen at the same time!

Almost forgot, confirmed this work son the touch cruise, and also my old 6700..so it's like I said, i'm still pretty much positive that all HTC phones have the same mini-usb pinout.

Does anyone know of a car radio \ system that has A2DP also?
...If so, that basically eliminates any need for a cable or adapter, besides the charger itself, unless you want to drain the battery .
I've searched and have come up with a couple different ones...but I'm unsure if any of them are good or not.

Hi!
Today I will get delivered my new car, luckily it is without an original stereo. I bought a Sony MEX-BT2600 (~130€ in Austria) which includes BT Handsfree (built in Mic) and capable of receiving BT Audio Streaming.
I will post the next days if it works (I'm still not sure if that Sony and the TC can connect and use the BT protocol in the correct way ....)

Eh my stereo already does this. I just turn bluetooth on and I can call and play music through it. I use it many time. But this is a good idea for people that do not have that feature. If you don't have a headphone jack, you can always buy a radio transmitter.

I ended up going with this ( newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875982446 ) Samsung Stereo Clip-On Bluetooth Headset for Samsung HS3000
My reasons for going with this one is that it has added functionality and at half the cost. (it does support AptX, mentioned on the original product page and amazon, but not on newegg for some reason)
This adapter allows me to use a Male to Male 3.5mm adapter to do the same thing as the Stereo clip. In addition, the Samsung has a built in mic, and allows me to add bluetooth functionality to any set of headphones/earbuds. (also, longer battery life)

Many times I have been disappointed by the audio quality of streamed Bluetooth. It sounds like absolute crap in any car stereo I've heard to date compared to a direct line in or even a cassette adapter. It seems to lose all clarity and power... Is this product truly the game changer? I have a 2012 Civic SI which has Bluetooth and aux in, and except for phone calls the Bluetooth will never be used until the quality comes up to par.
Before anyone gets angry, yes I understand the concept of this device is so that the Bluetooth communication is now between it and the phone, thus Id be plugging it into my aux port. However I re-iterate, in my experience any use of Bluetooth as a way to stream audio gives a very poor performance... would pick this up in a heart beat if it finally changed that! Please let us know!

Jesus, I'm so pissed by your post. Total crap. LOl, nah I'm just playing. No bit seriously, I had and returned the Belkin Air cast which I used in my 2010 Chevy Impala, and surprisingly the sound quality was even better compared to me plugging it directly into the AUX jack. Which was totally unexpected. Just returned it cause I'm actually on my way to Sprint right now to by this stereo clip thingy. Just to give it a shot. Hell, maybe a new case as well, until my Otter comes in. Good to see a thread on this.

The HTC Bluetooth StereoClip is worth getting if you are a music lover. The reason is AptX, which is supported by both the StereoClip and the HTC EVO 4g LTE (but very few older devices at this point). AptX is a new method for streaming bluetooth audio, which trumps the older A2DP standard. In my opinion, it sounds as good as (if not better) than plugging a 3.5mm cable directly into your car audio.
Also keep in mind that while many high-end or luxury cars may already have bluetooth cababilities, I can bet you that those cars support only A2DP bluetooth audio, and not the newer AptX technology. Check your user manual.

helped me remember i have a plantronics bt earbud set, and the ear buds are removable...so i'm buying an adapter from monoprice and just gonna hook the bt to aux in. hope it works...adapter was 36cents, and $2.35 shipping..lol

Yes I can but I'm trying to eliminate the cable.
The main reason is that I have the HTC Car dock and when I pug the audio cord into the 3.5mm port I get a buzzing sound. Some people have commented it could be a grounding issue with the charger, but I have never had the problem before and it disappears as soon as I take the phone out of the dock. I really like the dock though so it's forcing my hand into seeing how the stereo clip works out even though I'm not entirely thrilled about paying $60 for it... regarding your comment when I use the 3.5mm for music it works so long as I have the aux in selected as my source on my car. Then my car is smart enough to have the bluetooth override it when a call comes in. I have a 2012 Honda Civic SI.
Hopefully someone can help us out and post a link?

All local Sprint Stores were out of stock and an employee told me their warehouse had no inventory. I was also forced to go through HTCpedia. I ordered on Friday and received it Monday with expedited shipping (NY to CA).
BTW - I hooked it up to my home stereo and noticed that the sound cuts out if I cover the plastic upper backing (glossy part) of the phone with my hand. I'm not sure how this will affect its use in my car yet.

Cool. It'd be nice to know if I wasted my money on expedited shipping.
Also, the stereo clip works perfectly in the car. I don't know why it was cutting out in my home stereo, but it's totally fine in the car. Covering up any part of the phone has no effect on the audio.
Update: It works great
I received my stereoclip yesterday. I had ordered it from shop.htcpedia.com and selected the free shipping option. The total cost was $69.99. I had been having issues with buzzing/ static when using my aux cord when the phone was in the official HTC car dock. After having tried several different aux cords and several power adapters I finally gave in and paid for the stereoclip. I am now very happy that I did because I have one of the nicest phone set ups that I have ever had in my car. The sound quality is excellent. It sounds exactly as clear as using a high quality aux cord. I don't really notice any delay like others have reported as well. One thing that I am still working on is getting it to connect automatically instead of having to go into the bluetooth options on the phone. Hopefully this will be a quick fix. Below are some pics of my car set up. I purchased a sprint charger that has the additional slot for another usb device and also a 6" micro usb cable to run straight into the stereoclip. I then used a few cable ties to hold down the charging cable onto my dash so it doesn't fly around.

Yes with this set up you can charge the clip and play music at the same time. No buzz through the audio at all. Yes it was more expensive than I wanted, however it's done and over with now and I at least have a good working setup.
To those who have the phone, any issues with playing Pandora in your car via USB cable?

I know they had one working for the S2. They did something with a resistor and had it go into car mode which then enabled analog audio output. At least, that is the way I understood it. Hopefully something like that with the S3 will come out.

Seriously. I mean, my wife's Blackberry Curve from 2010 connects to my car's usb and plays audio just fine. My Iphone 4 does just fine. Heck, my One X (that I had for 3 hours) could do it too. Why not SGS 3?

I was actually sitting here looking at BT decks on crutchfield. I really dont want to have to change out my deck just to get that feature, but it may be something I end up doing anyway. We will see.
Was looking at the Pioneer DEH-P9400BH. Gets great reviews on the call quality and the BT streaming. That is the two most important aspects to me. Less than $250 isn't too bad, and that includes two rear USB ports for charging.
Man, this $199 phone upgrade is gonna end up costing me a lot more......

This dock has USB and 3.5mm audio jacks built into it.
All I have to do is slide the SIII into the dock, turn on my car stereo and I'm listening to music/pandora/radio all through the USB connection on the dock.
But the dock sends audio to my car stereo through the 3.5mm audio jack.
It does work great though.

OK, this sounds promising. Just to verify, the only connection to the phone is the microUSB port on the dock correct? The dock itself has 3.5mm output as well as some sort of USB input for charging.
I have a few quick questions if you don't mind. First, is the S3 charging well in this dock? By charging well, I don't mean super fast. Just good enough that the percentage is going up while playing with the phone. Sometimes my little girl likes to watch movies or play games while traveling.
Second, do you notice any humming or other noises when listening to the music. I know some systems will give you that ground-loop interference when playing from the phone. I am hoping that,by coming from the digital connection of the phone, it wouldn't be an issue.
Lastly, does the phone go into "car mode" when docked this way? I'm not exactly sure what all this does, but gather that it changes the screen to make it easier to use while driving.
I appreciate your information and look forward to your reply. This gives me hope that it will soon be easy to get the connection I need and have this playing right in my car. Of course, there isn't a great rush as I haven't even ordered the phone yet. I want to hold it in my hand before I give up the money. Not keen on doing the pre-order thing.

Yeah, the charge isn't as fast as if you're connected directly to a cig lighter charger.
If you use GPS, the charge goes down instead of up. But not as bad as if you weren't charging at all.
But if you're just surfing the net or using Pandora then charge goes up very slowly.

NONE! I don't notice any noise at all.
I have an amplifier installed though, which is grounded properly.

It instantly goes into car mode. And S-Voice comes up. I'm going to be looking into options because I don't want S-Voice to come up.

Audio out through the 3.5mm audio jack integrated into the dock works beautiful.
Turn my car off, then back on and the music starts playing again right away.
Wish I could say the same for bluetooth.
USB 3.5mm audio *might* sound better than bluetooth too, btw.
That "S" bracket thingy on the top of the dock is my Sony bluetooth microphone.
The other two cables plugging into the dock are the USB and 3.5mm audio cable.
I routed all the wires behind my dash, using the defroster vents.

Am I correct in assuming that analog audio is going out of the phone through the usb port or is there a DAC in the dock?
Initial impressions of Bluetooth vs. 3.5mm audio in my car.
BLUETOOTH:
-Bluetooth takes a minute to connect when first starting up car.
-Sometimes my car stereo needs to be rebooted to recognize the bluetooth.
-When I turn my car off and then back on, the music/connection doesn't always come right back up.
3.5MM AUDIO:
-Music instantly starts playing at all times, even when starting car up.
-If I remove phone from dock to play with it, then music stops of course because the connection was removed.
-If I plug phone back into dock, I may have to press "play" again.
-I didn't get to spend a lot of time on it, but I think 3.5mm might have sounded better. Hard to say though because I just blew a speaker.

There is no DAC in the dock.
Pretty sure it's analog audio coming out.
The 3.5mm jack on the phone uses the phone's internal DAC. BUT, I don't know if that's the same with this weird USB/3.5mm connection? I'd sure like to find out though.
Awesome, Awesome, Awesome.......this makes me feel much more comfortable about getting this phone. From what I have read in the past, people would make a DIY cable and have a resistor in line that would make the phone go into car mode and enable analog output as well as usb charging. With the way they changed things with the S3 microUSB, I was scared that that option wouldn't be there anymore. This makes me think that those same DIY cables would work.
I take it the S3 fits perfect in that dock, at least it looks like it does. I plan on putting some sort of case on it, so the dock wouldn't work for me. But, that DIY cable should work great.
Now I can stop looking at BT car stereo decks.....I really didn't want to upgrade as I like my current system. It outputs to a couple of amps, so I wouldn't expect any feedback also.
I am much appreciative of you posting your findings along with the pics.

Does anyone know when streaming audio via BT does ID tag show up on the headunit? Does this phone support AVCRP 1.3 or 1.4?

Here is the link to the forum in the S2 section that I was following which shows how to make a cable that will both charge and output analog audio from the microUSB port while putting the phone in "car mode."
If any of you are so inclined to be able to forge this cable and test it out, I would very much be interested in knowing for sure that it works on the S3. My thoughts are that it should work fine since the OEM Infuse dock is working and I am sure it is using something similar to this inside the dock.
Once I get my S3 (waiting for them to be sold in stores), I am planning on making a cable like this and trying it out. Does anyone think testing this out would cause any harm to the phone? To me, if it would, then using that Infuse dock would have messed it up also.
Thanks for any input you may have.

Does the phone go into car mode automatically w/ this dock? I still cannot figure how to manually put it in car mode (except w/ an nfc tag). Does all the car mode on the S3 do is not make it go to sleep or does it also put everything into landscape mode?

Alright so I made that dock for when the Nexus 10 is at home, but what if I want it in the car? Next project! I basically used the Exogear Tablet Mount along with Pogo Cable and Griffin Bluetooth Adapter to fully intergrate the Nexus 10 into my car. Thought I'd write up the details just like the dock in case anyone wanted to give it a go.

There's actually a lot that went into this, because:
1) It charges the tablet
2) Integrates with my car speakers
3) Is tethered to my phone, also mounted in the car

Step by Step
Step one was finding a mount/holder for the tablet. This one from exogear worked perfectly. I wanted charging, so I knew I wanted to integrate the pogo cable in somehow. I thought I would have to mod the holder a little but it was perfect as is - the pogo fits snuggly in the bottom:
Just force the usb end of the pogo into the hole at the bottom of the holder and you're good to go. I won't go into the details of removing the dash because every car is different, so I'l just say, get that cable inside the dash and leave it for now, we'll get back to it later. Lets stay on the outside for now. Next step, mount the phone:
Pretty simple. I found this mount to be the best - it was simple and allowed me to mount and dismount the phone quickly. I zip tied a charging cable for my phone and snaked that into the dash.
I integrated to my car stereo through bluetooth. But I wanted both the phone and the tablet to be connected. So I got two bluetooth devices. The trip here was to find ones that would auto connect without pressing any buttons on them since at least one would be behind the dash. And this was surprisingly hard to find. But this one from Griffin was exactly what I needed. It just plugs into a cigarette lighter and has a cable for Aux fro sound.
For the phone, I wanted one that I could use for calls and could control the phone with. So I mounted this little guy from Kinivo to the steering wheel. The one wire coming out of it split at the end to an aux for audio and a cigarette lighter plug. Bring that cable inside the dash.
Ok, so inside the dash is where all the magic happens.
So now we have to power everything. We have the following: USB from the pogo of the tablet, USB for the phone, 2 cigarette lighter plugs. Let's plug it all into this guy
But first you're going to have to modify it a little bit. So even though it says it can output 2.1A and 1A, that's only for apple products. Android handles things a little differently. If android detects that you're plugged into a usb port rather than a wall charger, it will only pull 500 mA regardless of what current is available. So we need to tell android that this is a higher current source. We do this by soldering the the two data lines in the usb together. The data lines are the middle two of the four. Just open up the case for the adapter and drop a ball of solder on the board for the middle two pins of both USB connectors. Trust me it works!
Now we need to plug the adapter into a power source. The easiest way to do this is to plug it into and cigarette lighter. But you don't find those inside the dash and I didn't want any cable on the outside, at least as little as possible. I wanted all the guts to be hidden. So for me, I had the fuse box under the driver's side dash which I wanted to tap into, and I think most cars have a fuse box in the same area. Find a fuse that is only powered when the engine is off. This is important, we don't want to drain the battery when the car is off. Once you find the fuse, get yourself an Add a Circuit . Very handly little guy. I used a 7.5 Amp fuse which was more than enough current to power everything.
Once you got that in, you'll need a cigarette lighter adapter. Connect that into your add a circuit and plug your power adapter into it and, boom, everything is powered.
Now we have to deal with the audio. I wanted both devices to have access to the speakers at the same time. So I needed a mixer. The strange thing is there is no such thing available for sale that I could find. I only saw stuff for high end musical equipment and so on. So I had to build my own. There's good guide how to do that here so i won't detail the instructions here. Those instructions are to build a 4 to 1 mixer, but we only need a 2 to 1, so it's a bit more simple but the basics are the same.
OK once you have that, plug your two AUX cable into the input and get yourself an Aux cable for the output.
So is where each car is different, but you need to get a PIE interface. Just find one for whatever car you have and use it with RCA Cable to hook into your car stereo.
Bonuses
1) If you find that you're volume is pretty low (which is likely due to the mixer), you'll need to get yourself an amp and put it in line. I got a passive one from here :http://phpaudio.jigsy.com/passive-preamp and I can vouch that it works great.
2) Be aware of the ground loop. If you're hearing excess noise, you might be coupled into you car's ground loop. The telltale of this is if the pitch of the static noise changes as you accelerate. If you get that, there's an easy fix. Get yourself a ground loop isolator to put in line.
Software
To wrap up, there are a few pieces of software that make the thing even better. One is of course Tasker. Set it up so that your phone automatically turn on wifi tether when it connects to both the bluetooth of the car and to the tablet. Second is Tablet Talk. It allows you to dial, answer and make calls from the tablet. It's an awesome piece of software and has great Tasker integration.

This is great! Very nice walkthrough on how you did it. My dash is a bit small for a 10" tablet on it, but a project like this has always really interested me for future vehicles I may have. I really dig how you did the dual bluetooth thing. That's something I've thought about wanting for my phone and tablet, but never really thought of a way to do it. What you did is great and I may have to consider that even without the extra mounting stuff.
Some of the steps may sound intimidating for a lot of people for sure. Wiring the power feed into the fuse panel is easier than most probably think. Or if you could run your wires to that point, take it to your local mechanic or buddy, and I bet they'd just tie it in for you real quick.

I don't think people should be intimidated at any of this at all. It's all really simple to do, just have to be willing to get your hands dirty and give it a try. I really had no idea what I was doing and figured it out as I went along and found various components. Solving the unexpected problems (low sound, ground loop, low charging current) was actually the more fun part.

Nice setup, I especially like the mixer. I've been trying to think of a solution that would allow me to connect my phone, tablet, and a HAM radio that I'm going to install towards the end of the summer to my Honda Fit's AUX port.
A couple questions for you now that you've had it in your car for a while, how's the audio quality when streaming using the Griffin? There are enough reviews on amazon complaining about poor quality that it gives me pause. Also, I'm assuming that you needed the PIE module for your car since you didn't already have an AUX port, correct?

The audio quality on the Griffin is great to my ear. People like to complain about audio quality, read any review of any audio related product and you'll see people complaining. I think it has a lot more to do with the speaker systems in their cars rather than the Bluetooth itself.
My car does have an AUX input but it's in the center console arm rest. I know the Fits have a AUX near the stereo so you could do that if you don't mind the little cable. I'm kind OCD and want all my cable hidden.
In terms of the links, they all work fine to me. What are they linking to for you?

Thanks for the feedback. I figured as much about the Griffin but wanted to check. With the pie installed does it disable the existing aux port? As for the links it seems to have resolved itself. The other night when I was reading this on the nexus in chrome it was opening something the the power adapter when I clicked on the BT adapters. Strange.
How does the exomount handle vertical adjustment?

It's adjustable, don't really remember exactly how. I think there's a knob. The whole this is very versatile. I just have it on the lowest setting since it would obstruct my driving view otherwise.

I would consider orienting it upside down, so that the pogo is on the top so that the connector isn't subject to as much gravity.

I've picked up most of the items needed to do the install in my Fit. When I finish I'll post a few pictures of the finished product. You were right about the exomount being versatile. I'm very impressed with it. When you hard wired the the bestek into the fuse box where did you take it to ground since the add-a-circuits only have the positive lead?

There was a screw that a lot of stuff was grounded to, so I just looped the wire and stuck it under that screw along with all the other wires. You'd probably find something similar near your fuse box too. Looking forward to seeing the pictures! I'm glad this writeup is proving helpful.
