Hello. My wife recently dropped her S2, with enough force to eject the battery. It had worked after she put it back in and all, and even called me to tell me about it. However, the battery ended up dying before she plugged in it. When plugging the phone into usb, the button lights would flicker and the battery charging icon would flash on for about a second. Rinse and repeat. If there is no battery in the phone, it just flickers the buttons, and the screen will flicker back, and just do it over and over.
The USB port on it was already really shoddy, so I bought a new ribbon and replaced it. Same symptoms. Pretty sure this is a hardware problem, although what the problem is exactly I do not know. I've already reseated all of the ribbon connections I could find. There's obvious signs of previous water damage, but it looks like very old damage. I wouldnt' be surprised if something is corroded, but the timing of this happening after it was dropped makes me think something else came loose. I just don't know what. I could potentially try to reflow the motherboard with my heat gun, but before I waste my time doing that, I was wondering if there's _anything_ else that could be causing these symptoms.

As far as I can remember, in every case the phone would boot up when a fully charged battery was inserted. And once the battery was charged, phone would then recharge the battery as long as it was not completely discharged. Not all phones behave this way. For instance, I have fully discharged my phone on several occasions without issue.
Therefore, I would first try inserting a fully charged battery to see if the phone boots up ok, and see if it will charge with a partially charged battery. Some have had to buy an external charger just for this purpose, or borrow a charged battery from another phone, etc.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I will try to find a battery. I do have a question though. If the battery was the cause of this, should the phone not act like this if the battery was not inserted? I would expect it to boot up just fine with the wall charger plugged into it without the battery in it, but that does the same thing (minus the battery icon).

I'm just not sure the answer to that. I can't remember if anyone mentioned that, although as I think about it, it seems like someone mentioned that as well. Still, I think this should be the first step in trouble shooting, because if this is the issue, and the phone is otherwise fine, then you don't want to be using a heat gun on it, or any other more difficult steps until you have eliminated this possibility.
Also, you might consider sending the phone out for repair if this step does not solve the issue. Assuming you are in the USA, Mobile Tech Videos is a very reputable shop that can deal with many issues.
You may be correct on this. The battery won't even charge through the external charger (my atrix battery charges fine on it so the charger is good). New battery (even though this is new) it is.
Update: The pins on the battery were labeled wrong. The label wasn't placed in teh correct position. I looked up a pic of another battery and found the label was offset by 1 pin, so I offset the charging pins by 1 and bam, it started charging. 50% charge, popped in the battery, and boom, booted right up.

I just got a refurb Atrix as a replacement, and it's got a problem charging the battery (or something).
When I first opened the box, I plugged the Atrix in for a few hours. Unplugged it, tried to boot it up, and nothing. Plugged it back in, and it says the battery is still at 5%.
So I tried it on 3 different outlets, 2 different wall chargers (including the Atrix charger), and hooked up to my PC, removing the battery and SIM card a bunch of times as well. Won't boot while unplugged.
If I leave the phone on the wall charger, I can boot into Android, but the second I remove the charger cable, it dies. If I boot into Android using the wall charger, and leave it up for a few minutes, the battery % will jump from 5% to 100% instantly, but it still dies if I unplug it.
I took it to an ATT store, but they didn't have any replacement batteries. He tried it on his charger, and while it was off, it displayed the battery jumping from %5 to 100%, but that's the only time it has done it.
I've read through a lot of battery problem threads on here, but nothing seems to quite fit the bill. I've already called to have another replacement sent, but I wanted to know if anybody on here has had this problem and knows a possible solution, so I can at least use the phone while I await the replacement. I can't tell if this is a battery issue, phone issue, or, after having read some threads on here, possibly a software issue.
EDIT: Replaced the battery with one from a Droid X2. Worked fine. Battery was the problem.

No, I haven't tried calibrating. I left the phone on the charger for a few more hours, and now it shuts off almost immediately when it boots up, even though it's plugged in, so I don't think I'll be able to.
I have a galaxy s2 and bought a new battery recently (samsung one) thinking it would solve an issue which I thought was my battery.
Its very hard to describe but will do my best (have checked other threads but nothing quite like this..):
The battery will always say charging when plugged in but will sometimes increase in charge and other times not. I can charge overnight sometimes and it will say charging 7% and in the morning be completely dead and will not even show the charging animation (I have fixed by using my girlfreinds phone to charge it a bit and then it will be fine for a bit).
I thought might be charger - but my girlfreinds s2 charges fine on it - her phone works fine on both batteries and charges both fine.
Seems to be something to do with my hardware and I thought it may be the charging port - but not sure as it does still say charging without having to wiggle or anything like that so that suggests not the port.
The other thing that suggests something other than the port is I have had a battery in my girlfriends phone with it on, then plug it in and it said charging 37%, take it out and put in my phone with it plugged in and turn the phone on and it will say charging 4%...
Does anyone have any ideas as to this? Any things to try?

Do a clean install of stock & test for a day or two, if you're already running stock skip straight to replacing the USB board/port. Given you've already replaced your battery, this is likely to be the cause of the issue. Search for KeithRoss39's guide in the General section; it's quick/easy/cheap (<AUD$10 for me) to do.

I have a Samsung Galaxy SII (SGH-i777) that I used a couple of years ago. It was my first Android phone and I loved it very much (until corporate made me an iSheep).
The phone was retired to a shoe box for the last 1+ years and I recently dug it up so I could get it set up for my little bro who somehow recently fell on his phone with it in his pocket and shattered the screen (don't ask... I don't get it either).
Anyways long story short -- the phone sat idle for a long time, when I pulled it out it wouldn't boot up at all. Assumed that the battery had discharged so I plugged it in to see if it would start up. The battery logo would intermittently flash on the screen and show a drained battery logo but even letting the phone sit for a day did not provide me any results.
Fast forward 3-6 months. Today I replaced the charging board thinking that there was some issue with the USB connector on the phone that was preventing it from getting power. Once that was done I discovered that I was able to get the phone to boot into Odin mode. Great! No boot, no recovery, but download mode seemed to be better than nothing.
I have tried, in vain, to flash stock firmware to this phone via Odin, and even though all indicators point to it being successful, once I finish the Samsung logo comes up on the screen, goes off and that's it. I can see the 4 LEDs on the buttons at the bottom of the phone flash every 5 seconds as well as a faint flicker on the screen staggered between the LED flashes.
Looking for any further suggestions as to what I may be able to try. I have searched various sources on XDA and other sources but I haven't quite found anything that matches my exact symptoms.
Furthermore, I can't be sure what Kernel/ROM I was last running on this phone. Maybe Siyah kernel, maybe CM 10,1 with Flux kernel. Idk.
Any input is appreciated!
Seems I should mention this other detail --
With the battery in, I cannot get into download mode -- it just states 'Low Battery!! Can't Download!!" This is presumably due to the fact that the battery is completely discharged -- maybe incapable of holding a charge but perhaps this is indicative of a more serious hardware failure.
I'd guess the battery is completely shot.

Since you got me to shift focus here, a quick search is telling me that it won't boot without a battery due to a feedback circuit. This would explain the ability to go into download mode but the lack of boot / flashing LEDs I guess.
Can someone confirm?
If the phone was working normally when it was put away, I would expect it to be working normally when it was pulled it back out. Your story is a little confusing, but did you ever try booting the phone with a fully charged battery? In the circumstances you describe, that would be the first logical trouble shooting step. And if you haven't tried that, then it is still the next logical trouble shooting step. Also, you can't assume that the original battery that you left in the phone is still able to hold a charge. It still may be good, but you can't assume that for testing purposes. Incidentally, the battery should have been pulled from the phone before it was put away.

I guess I'll go ahead and buy another battery and see what happens.

Even if the battery is good, but fully discharged, it may not charge in the phone. You would have to have an external charger. Phones are not consistent, and many phones probably would charge a fully discharged battery, but I have seen a number of people report that a fully discharged battery would cause the exact same behavior as you report. If it were mine, I wouldn't throw the battery away yet.
If you know anyone with an I777, you could borrow their fully charged battery for a few minutes just to see if your phone will boot.
You are correct that the phone will not boot on the charger when the battery is out, although you should be able to successfully flash firmware through Odin with the battery out, and the computer supplying the power, but still, as far as I know, it will not boot after the flash without a working battery.
The battery was indeed at fault. Ordered a new one on Amazon, popped it in and voila -- we're up and running.

I recently purchased a used Droid Razr Maxx from a co-worker. The lcd screen was cracked so I replaced it. I took apart the phone completely and reassembled it with the new screen in place. The phone turns on just fine, the Motorola icon shows up and it gets to the charging battery icon with 5%, but after a few hours of letting it charge, it stays at 5% and wont turn on. Keep in mind, the phone has been charging for two hours from the time this post was made.
My question is, did I somehow damage the battery when operating internally? I can replace the battery if needed.
Another question. If I damaged the motherboard, would the phone turn on at all?
I am kind of wondering if there is a certain thing I needed to do before plugging it in.
To answer any questions that might be asked: The battery was completely dead when I did repair the screen. The charger is a wall usb charger, not plugged into my computer. Morning now. The battery is still at 5%. The phone shuts off soon as the charger is not connected. Does not seem to hold a charge. Think I should buy a new one?

It could be a faulty charger.
Normally, If the battery is poor, it won't hold charge but it won't stick to a particular percentage. It will only discharge sooner. But given the fact you got the phone dead, it might as well be the battery.
Worst scenario, you damaged the charging port.
I'd begin with using a different charger, if that doesn't work, try another battery.

I have used other chargers and they all work for my other phones, just not this one. I am hoping it's a dead battery and not something to do with the motherboard. My friend wont let me dismantle his phone to see if it's the batter, lol.
Just the clarify, the phone doesn't boot up completely, only to the charging screen. The battery icon with 5% shown. When I unplug the phone from the charging screen, it just dies. Will not even boot up to the phone animation.
I purchased a battery replacement off of Ebay. It'll arrive in a few days. Let's hope this works!

This phone can be picky. First razr I got had broken screen, repaired it and found myself in the same situation.
Connecting to a laptop would not charge it. Only stock charger. IPhone charger or chargers designed for iphones will not work.
Edit: When replacing battery, position is critical. If battery terminals are a little bit displaced it will not turn on.
Displacement can be minimal or imperceptible but will cause troubles. If possible don't place cover before checking that it turns on. (please avoid touching circuits or battery terminals or will get worse).

That was exactly the problem....
I got the new battery, but not 24 hours later, I was realigning the cables inside it (like the front facing and rear cameras, along with the WiFi antenna) I slightly moved the replaced battery and the cable to the battery to the motherboard tore itself. After a long face-palm moment, I got the old battery back in place and realigned it very carefully. It turns out it still works, but I am out a new battery.
Apart from the battery, I need to find out why the front speaker won't work. Either the speaker is damaged or something needs to be in place correctly, besides the cable. Also need to get some adhesive gel to bond the screen and case together.
Damn I really had forgotten about that speaker. The fact is it tends to break. It has very fine copper wire winding that can break when you remove it the wrong way.
Having no experience I pulled not knowing that speaker is glued to motherboard. At that time I didn't knew it and thought that little bar left was part of the motherboard.
Since you disassembled almost everything, that must be the reason it is failing. If it is not that, it is badly plugged but I really doubt it.
Alas Never fixed it, so i can't tell correct process to reassemble or disassemble that speaker. Instead I searched for apps that would activate loud speaker automatically during calls.
Would have been nice to fix it but I got the opportunity to acquire a RAZR maxx so never touched and sold instead.
Removing that glue might involve using a hot air gun. So that you don't damage motherboard removing by force. (But again too much heat could Fry motherboard)
Maybe someone could share it's experience?
About that screen, Remember to have read about a 3m adhesive spray in some thread.
Also some one just passed hot air that melted original glue but it would be better not to play with heat over a battery.

At first I wondered about this being a smaller battery if it would run down fast. It doesn't !!! Works very well !!!

That could be a bad/shorted battery. Mine is still going strong! I would try and reverse everything and start over. When I did mine my vol controls didn't work. Didn't have the connector snapped down good enough

I am still trying to see if there is a setting that somehow caused my NT to freak out when the battery reaches 23%
But I have this bad feeling I will need to purchase a new battery. By the way, if the nook just shuts off watch the screen closely it usually says "battery too low" for a second before switching off. And if that is the case after plugging it in, you likely have a bad one and I would call the company to get a replacement.
I have been looking around and the only new replacement batteries I find are the two mentioned and both are 3200mh rather than 4000 of the original. How is your battery life since you changed it? Seems like it should be 1/4th what we had when new (or close to it). Or don't you really notice at this point? I have thought about ebay but then they are used batteries and you have no idea how many cycles are left, and likely hold 1/4th less anyway due to their age. *shurgs* not sure which way to go. As of now I am still having a "freak out" situation at about 23% (roughly). If it doesn't get any worse I can live with that, but from what I have read it will only get worse. :/
Anyone know of a battery app I could use to "adjust" the shut down threashold? I have one that will alert me to whatever I set so if I am not watching it will warn me so that will work if I don't have one that will actually shut it down. I know the "calibrating" apps don't do anything except delete the one file that is only usage stats from the last time it was plugged in, so I don't think there is a real way to calibrate it.

And on another note with the "spare parts" app the 'battery history' option errors with "the application spare parts ) process.com.andriod.spare_parts_ has topped unexpectedly, please try again." Is this normal? It is version 2.3.7. NT Hidden Settings app application settings/battery use works fine and shows the amount of everything that has used the battery since it was last plugged in/charged. Could this error be a sign of the problem with the phantom touches and inaccurate battery display? And if it is a sign of something broken, what and how do I fix it?
I received a replacement battery and it is doing the same thing, so somehow during the battery switch something got wonkey with my nook. It charges OK just powers off to do it. Since it's used by my kids now it's not essential to be on while charging, but I'd still like to figure this out.

Which battery did you get? And very strange it shuts off when you plug it in. Never seen or heard of that before. It should boot up if off. Or do you mean the screen goes off/goes to sleep but not full shut down when you plug it in? If it is going to sleep, that is likely a app or setting that is doing it. Not sure which but you might want to check any battery apps you have or your settings. It would also depend on which ROM you are running, stock (which I am running) or something else.

It will not boot up until I unplug the USB from a power source, although it will fully charge while it is plugged in. I've never seen anything like this and I've been messing with android since my original moto droid 1.

Very strange indeed. The only thing I would say to do is turn the USB debugging on and off a few times, to see if that makes a difference. It shouldn't but if you tried two different brands of battery, sounds like it is the hardware on the nook. But that is one really weird bug.
Something interesting I discovered. While I did get a new battery, I decided to do some experimenting. Researching this issue a lot of people said you need to delete the "battery file". There even use to be a option in CWM to remove this file. The thing is the file is deleted every time you plug in the device. So that is not going to help.
Further digging found that some devices you need to plug them in and let them charge. Or run them down for say 20-30 minutes without sleeping then plug in and let it charge fully. For some devices this "resets" the battery management system.
What I found in my tests is the battery gets harder to charge with age. While the little n light might show green, it is likely only 80% charge sometimes 90%. And it takes awhile for it to really get to 100%. What I did was let it charge up to that full 100% which may take hours. I got a nice battery app that alerts me when it gets below 25% after that things can get crazy with phantom touches. I also have it set to give a audio alert when it reaches 100%, this way I know when it is fully charged.
I know the charge it fully (when it actually says 100% and I get a audio alert when this happens) before 50% or so has helped a lot. At one point the phantom touches started to happen at higher than 25% reaching almost 35%, last time I did a test to see when phantom touches started was 17% so it is much better. Not to the level when I bought the device, but still very useable.
I will put in the new battery sometime I am sure as it is taking longer and longer to reach the full 100% (but that is normal for lithium ion batteries.) it is certainly useable in this state and the phantom touch issue is not getting worse. I think the biggest issue was charging it until the n light went green and as the battery ages, the battery manger gets thrown off for some reason and charging to the true 100% helps recalibrate it.
Therefore I would run it for 20 minutes without letting it go to sleep, then charge until it is really full (usually leave it plugged in overnight and that should do it). Do this a few times and see if the battery is better.
Oh another thing I did. Power it off fully (hold down power button then tap shutoff) then plug it in to charge. Let the charger wake, reboot, and charge the device. This I also think helps recalibrate the system. Although I never did it when I ran it for 20 minutes then charged to full. But I am sure powering off then plugging in to charge at times made a difference as well.

It should be. It won't be quite as it was when it was new, as these new batteries don't have the capacity compared to the originals that B&N installed (perhaps a hour or two less runtime compared to the originals). But it will be better than a well used Nook Tablet battery that is fading fast.
I don't know if I need a new battery just yet, but I am experiencing the issue of the power being killed when plugging the Nook into the wall or USB (which means transfers over an SD card, which is a pain). I only spent $5 to get it and I can see why someone might have thought it was broken, since they probably plugged it in to charge it but it wouldn't turn on while plugged in. It does charge while off, however.
What I've noticed in my experience is that if I turn it on, I can plug it in while the Nook is on the N screen, and then it'll go to the Cynoboot screen still plugged in, but the second it goes to boot the OS it turns off.
Anyone have any ideas on why it would allow itself to be on until it tries to boot to the OS?
