Galaxy S5 to M8 because of no root - AT&T HTC One (M8)

I have been an avid Samsung fan and have had the S1,S2 and S3. In between I had the HTC inspire 4G, so I know what it's like to have experienced htc. Never did get the S4 due to being on a 2 year contract with the S3. And now it's time for me to finally upgrade, I naturally went with the S5,which I found out after the fact that its boot loader is locked. This, like with many ppl here,is a deal breaker for me. I waited and waited for root or an exploit to be found, and still nothing. So I finally decided to take the plunge and try out the m8 since root and boot loader unlock is possible. And wow this thing is nice.. highly impressed. Definitely the premium feel that a lot of ppl talk about. The only thing that is better on the S5 is the screen. The M8 colors look a little washed out in comparison. But not a deal breaker for me. I will be rooting this phone real soon. Glad I made the switch

One of the exact reasons I ditch my S4 after 4 months,...I HATED the fact that Samsung and Verizon locked that sucker down so tight! I left my M7 for the S4 and regretted it so much, I left Verizon after those 4 months (and a 300 ETF), to go back to HTC with the M8 and ATT lol
Actually I was able to root, but that was it

The locked bootloader on the S5 is one of the main reasons I decided against it, in favor of the M8. That, and the exterior design on the M8 is simply much higher end, and I also love the front facing speakers. And TouchWiz while not as horrible as past iterations, is still pretty awful.
If the colors on the M8's diplay don't look as vivid, it may be that you are used the AMOLED on your old S3, which many considered to have over-saturated colors. Its a matter of personal preference whether the over-saturation looks better (many hated it). The S5 isn't quite so artificially over-saturated, and IMO not all that different in color reproduction from the M8. Contrast is always going to be better on a AMOLED than on a LED, as the contrast ratio is effectively infinite. But the M8 still has one of the best smartphone displays around.
In any case, glad you are enjoying your new M8. Welcome to the fold!

I rooted and unlocked as soon as I got my M8 also.. (I came from S3)
The only thing I have done with it since getting it is changing the boot up / down screens and removing CarrierIQ. Otherwise it's bone stock.
I don't run the Sense launcher, but really only because I got used to Nova after using it for so long on that horrible Touchwiz.. Sense is so good, I really don't see a need to do a custom rom.
On my Infuse & S3 I was die hard CyanogenMod user. Haven't even bothered with it on this phone.

Just got a HTC One M8, selling my Galaxy S5

I did the same with the m7 and s4 last year. I realized that I enjoyed the speakers more than the higher mp camera. I ditched my nexus 5 because I can enjoy stock android whenever I get that itch with the gpe rom or conversion ruu. The phone is just so versatile.

Two days ago I bought the note3 after being a satisfied note2 user.
Little did I know that the latest kit kat update hard locked the boot loader and removed all possibility of root.
Haven't had an HTC since my inspire 4g. Loved that phone... Now I love my m8 after returning that God awful note3.
Worth every penny of the $35 restock fee.
Long live the king, HTC. Thank you for giving me a phone that is wonderful out of the box and giving me the ability to make it more wonderful within minutes if owning the phone.
Boo Samsung. Go get your NSA and government contracts cuz you've lost the Dev community and Joe consumer is soon to follow.

After giving it a few days to test the hardware and make sure that there are no defects, I finally unlocked, rooted, and ROMed my M8. So nice to be free again to mod how I see fit with a phone I paid full price off contract for. This whole locking thing is about as asinine as if Dell or HP decided to lock their PCs to the point where you couldn't install anything other than Windows (let's hope it doesn't ever get to that point). I just read that an infamous developer who hacked the PS3 and iphones announced that he rooted the locked S5's but is not choosing to release the root method. So much for open source and modding. Anyways, I'm enjoying my M8 even more now. :good::good:

Yea I saw. They probably will still have a locked bootloader. I had the S5 for a month and I'm enjoying the M8 more. The S5 is nice but it might as well been called the 4S prime. And touchwiz is in desperate need of an overhaul like sense 3.0 vs sense 6.0. The new sense is very streamlined and modern.

Regardless,,,I had my Verizon S4 rooted, but the bootloader was still locked so no custom recovery, no custom roms, and no kernals!

Sorry, you don't make claims like that. Open a website, announce the date etc.. etc if it wasn't Geohot.
Good luck.

Same here. Had the s1,s2, s3, note 2, and s4. And because of the lock bootlader/lack of root, now i've got the M8. There are a few things to get used to, but I absolutely love it. I'll probably grab a 1+ also if I ever get an invite.

Where are the developers?

Before anyone gets all mad, I'm asking because I'm torn between getting this phone or the Galaxy Note II. The specs here are most excellent and its very, very similar to the Nexus 4. But there is just sooo much more happening for the Note II than there is over here. Why isn't the LGOG getting more love? It seems like that might be scaring people away. What do you guys think?

I have read that entire thread; I've been lurking for a while. Also, Ibet myself you would be the first person to reply to me. So, thanks! I think it is rather short-sighted to go with a phone just for what it can do out of the box. Potential and upside are what people buy these shiny new phones for and what XDA is about. Otherwise it wouldn't be needed. That said, I'm only asking if anyone knows why there is such a disparity in the two communities. If no one knows, that's fair enough as I'm only asking.

Perhaps you should think to yourself, "If XDA did not exist, which phone would I get?"
Good luck deciding, Mr. Sassafrass.

Welcome Jank4AU, i too am coming from the I777 GS2. You have helped on that forum once or twice if i recall correctly. I to was on the fence between the two devices. I love samsung devices and the dev community over there. Its very robust as you know. But the Note is and was just to big for me. Size is what made me decide. I believe in a month or two the Lg optimus g just may take off. Maybe. If you are patient, i say wait it out. Good luck making your decision. Btw. I'm rooted and unlocked.

Yeah man, almost all my XDA posts have been on the I777 forums. I learned how to do my boot animations over there. Just made the latest one for SHOstock3. I wish Shoman94 would jump over here; THAT would make up my mind. But, that's neither here nor there. I should probably just put my darn money where my mouth is and try to make my own ROM. How hard can it be right? Obviously kidding...

That'd be awesome man!
I've been asking that same question ever since the OG came out. It's actually quite strange that development has been so relatively slow considering the fact that the Nexus 4 hardware is based off of the OG. It could be because of the locked bootloader, even though it's already been unlocked through an exploit. I'm planning on getting it myself since my contract expired 3 months ago, but the slow pace of development has worried me a bit.

Just my two cents, and just guessing!
Bad news first:
Even though the OG has expandable storage & LTE, the dev community will support the Nexus 4 50x more than this phone (I feel like this is very likely).
For one, the Nexus 4 is a Nexus phone.
I gather from other posts that the OG has a locked bootloader? I bet that will eventually be overcome, but that's still sorta like a red flag, and could make it more prone to bricking.
The Nexus 4 is a Nexus phone.
The price of the N4 is really attractive, and will probably have a huge market, and a larger market is (IMO) more attractive to develop for. Some devs have multiple devices of the same model, so price could definitely be an issue!
The Nexus 4 is a Nexus phone!
Now some good news!
If the bootloader gets an easy unlock, then after some time - like, winter/spring 2013, perhaps - I expect some of the N4 devs will gain interest in the OG for the LTE/expandable storage/familiar architecture. Some of the popular Nexus 4 ROMs will get "ported" to the OG, which I imagine will be fairly simple, considering the similar chipsets. I feel like this is fairly likely.
Sorry if that wasn't what you wanted to hear, just throwing out my guesses
If you need LTE/SD, sit tight, devs will come eventually... after all, this phone is still basically BRAND new. If ROMs are what you want in a phone, and can live with 3G and USB OTG for SD storage, then jump ship for a Nexus 4.
oh HUGE EDIT: didn't realize you were considering Note II, not N4, sorry! Go for the Note II, that's what I would get if I could choose between the two! The Note II really lends itself to ROM/theme stuff, some reallyneat things happening over there!

So, you have 1 point: The OG isn't a Nexus phone and the N4 is? Thanks for your brilliant insight.
The problem I see is that the devs, or at least the ones I work with, have all upgraded recently and are stuck paying full retail for phones. That gets expensive. I'm the only one on our team with the phone, and it is too much for me to take on with work and family. What is crazy to me is that I read in other threads where members are donating to devs so that they can get them to work on a phone. Not only that, but I know of a dev that got the donated phone, did one little ROM (took out all the bloat which anyone can do with TB) and then turned around and sold the phone! That is just plain wrong. Hell, any money we get from out TN site goes right back into the site to pay for the server and such.
Why in gods name would people give a phone to someone like that.

I admit that I am a bit jealous after seeing the amount of development already going in the N4 but I am sure that we will also get some cool roms pretty soon. What I am more worried about is the lack of accessories since we can't even get a decent case for the AT&T version.

CTIA Verizon Announcement

Well, that was depressing. The good news is that we will probably get a way better phone than the one seeing as the butterfly 2 is keeping its 5" display and probably Snapdragon 800 in that bad boy. That being said, even though the announcement was a let down, I'm kind of excited seeing as the buttefly 2 isn't restricted to keeping the same specs as the one. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

so i must confess...i caved about opened up a second line (its for my grandmother..i took the smartphone and put her on a basic one. lol) and got the S4...HTC has spoiled me. Just adding apps to my homescreen is annoying. the way the screen gets all small and theres crap all over the place. i guess its nice and all with the options and junk but htc keps it simple. folders alone are annoying...i have to click on create a folder then drag them into it vs just dragging apps over each other and auto creating it...the sound the s4 is capable of is sad...touchwiz is still lagging its phones, its not major but enough to annoy me. i dont get whats the big deal about this phone... debating to return it or just make money off it. Its only my first day with it and i want back to my DNA!! i might return it in hopes that the next htc phone is the One if not something better....
P.S.
Another reason i bought it is because HTC lost alot of big wigs and the comments that followed were not too positive about HTC's future...

Yea this may be a discussion for another thread entirely. I personally wasn't all that impressed with my one and only samsung device to date which was the GNexus. I've enjoyed my Droid X, Razr, Thunderbolt, and DNA way more then I liked it. After having my DNA I really don't mind missing out on the S4. Doesn't seem like it can offer much more then a little faster hardware. Which I feel like the DNA is pretty darn quick to begin with.
I really hope that HTC isn't on the spiral down. I though the Thunderbolt and DNA had pretty great build quality and it looked like it was on the up and up with the One. We had a pretty large discussion on why they're going the way they are and we kinda felt like it is from them screwing things up with Google and the whole Nexus line, turning their back on the modding community, and poor marketing.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

they didnt announce any phones at CTIA. it was all a marketting plan or whatever u wanna call it. the Butterfly 2 is already in production and some stuff was leaked about how its in the works. Since the the first Butterfly was the DNA counterpart, that means the the Butterfly 2 thats suppose to be out in third qtr might show up a month after the butterfly 2 release. just google butterfly 2 and you'll see alot of posts about the leaks and rumors.

[Q] HTC ONE with "Nexus experience"

By now I'm sure you've all seen that the HTC ONE is going to be sold on the google store starting next month. Apparently its going to run a stock google experience. Since m7 was able to be ported with little effort (or what at least seemed like little effort), will 4.2.2 be able to be ported over that easily as well? Now before you all jump down my throat yes I'm fully aware of the version that currently exists how ever there are still flaws with that rom (my hats off to those dev's regardless because there works is amazing). Also does anyone think there will be any benefit (other than future updates) that googles 4.2.2 will offer over what our devs have cook up?
Was going to ask the same thing. I hope this helps with great AOSP roms for the dna.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
my first instinct is that yes this will benefit our roms seeing as much of the stuff that brought functionality to our current aosp builds was aided by the htc one devs(camera comes to mind)... hopefully alot of stuff can be pulled.. if not much at all, it will still offer some benefit.

Rumor has it HTC will be giving early adopters of the One the option to run a Sensless stock vanilla ROM. So, if they do that, they would have to make it a downloadable file which may make it that much easier for the developers.

Two years ago they said the same about 4.3 inches. Bigger screens will sell. Verizon wants to sell. The math is simple. The new note is supposed to be around that area. Note 2 sells very well. Most people like bigger screens myself included.

Yea imho the 5 inch is perfect for a big phone, noticibly bigger than the HTC one. 4.3 is great for useres who prefer one a little more compact. My gnex is a great device, the rezound would have been if not for its thickness. If I want a phablet like the note 2 I see no problem with 6+in displays and will be getting HTCs new throw in the phablet market.

I used to say my rezound screen at 4.3 inches was plenty big enough. But being used to the DNA, everynight when I get on my rezound to work on testing and scripts and such, I wish it had a bigger screen. What I'm really looking forward too though, is a bigger tablet. I'd love an 18 inch tablet that's thin and lightweight, and powered like the 383 stroker motor I built for my S-10.

New intriguing upgrade

Well guys, I've been a fan of the EVO LTE since the customs preorder debacle. There have been quite a few hiccups, 3 dot menu, multi-tasking, frapple, but they have all been ironed out to make this phone one of the best on the market.
Having said all of that, I am looking towards the future. Say early 2014; what are some upcoming phones you believe will be successor to the EVO LTE? If not another HTC then what if anything do u have your eye on?
I am just curious to see what the future may hold. Have dreams of octo-cores and 8gb ram that could rival a gaming rig nowadays, lol.
Was waiting on windows phone but the ones sprint getting are wack. Checking fot the optimus g pro or g2 and this t6/htc one max phone
I have my upgrade in March 2014. I've been an evo nut since the OG but I'm anxious to see what will be available at that time. Samsung devices are much easier to root and I imagine there are more custom ROMs available due to their popularity.
Sent from my EVO using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
@atheistevofreak you would think so with 40 million+ sales but if you check out the sprint s3 section they have as much to choose from as we do.
I upgrade in october but im probably gonna be holding out for the One Max hopefully for a deal on black friday. The Ultra Z is what i had my eye on especially with them saying theyre going to be on top of updates now and always dropping aosp builds for their devices but a 3000mah battery with that processor and display amongst other things aint cuttin it. The nexus 5 by lg based loosely off the g2 sounds nice even tho i want a bigger screen but i doubt its coming to sprint. The note 3 sounds nice also but i hate their current design and even more than that i hate how touchwiz looks which is a shame because the multi screen and other features are great. The Honami is too small for me but its camera is off the chain. I have no interest in the g2 even tho its not a bad device, just nothing special. And i have absolutely no interest in the moto x.
I am honestly, completely torn on this. Android has really left that newly-wed stage that was very exciting. I love what android has become but the aftermarket development has grown stale. It seems every rom is the same except for the boot animations and carrier banner. Aosp roms have all become CM/AOKP/PA omelets. And except for Venom and its tweak settings, Sense Roms are all Identical. Back in the Hero days, Roms were modded for performance and devs also put some creative, cosmetic changes, fully themed, new icons, different animations, and all custom notification bar icons. It seems like everyone is out to get there name in the books like they are earning money from this. Just relabeling some one else's work and calling it their rom.
I think this just might be my last Android Device. Not sure how Windows Phone and I will get along... Hopefully it works out...

I love it. This is so true. I don't care how many janky ports there are! I need my phone to be updated and work as it should. No disrespect to the devs but HTC makes it too difficult to make things work as Sense is too deep into the system.
As for Sprint I just shake my head. I live in Milwaukee and I haven't seen good service ever. I have a VZ Pantech for work and its data is great. I also have been testing T-Mobile hotspot that I got from Walmart which I tether mySprint phone to. I get about 6 down and 3 up.

So the lte and s won't get it, that leaves a few devices with similar specs which will. as for sense being too deep uhh yea it can be but that doesn't stop me, it just takes longer. My advice for you is that you unroot and get a nexus also stay unrooted its little ****s like you that ruin the android community you wouldn't be rooted if it were not for a one click tool you're pathetic with the whining and *****ing we devs aren't your parents and I doubt you're a toddler so stfu already.

Incoming rant: if you don't want to read it, please skip to the summary at the end of the post.
[RANT]
No 4.3? Big deal. I have better things in life to pour my emotions into.
Quite frankly, I care about Sense 5, not Android 4.3. Having 4.2.2 surely is a bonus over Sense 4.1 (port) didn't the quick settings and few lockscreen widgets. I've tested Sense 5, and the lighter UI improves performance immediately. Even the multitasking problem is much better (not like CM 10.1, but MUCH better than Sense 4.1).
You have to face the facts that our device is aging. That's how HTC does it. I KNEW that before I bought this phone, and I'm sure that most of you did too. Samsung can update its old flagship (like the S2) because MUCH more people purchased those handsets. HTC provided support for the OG EVO for a pretty decent period of time because of the big impact that it made.
You have to remember, the EVO 4G LTE is SPRINT'S flagship, NOT HTC! We are lucky enough to get the recognition to be listed on the to-be-updated list while we are over here on the back burner. I expect the One to get much better support than our phone because it is a carrier-wide flagship, unlike the Evo or the Incredible (who might not even get Sense 5,so be happy!).
Basically, this is a business, and the masses have already moved onto the One. Look at how many devs - OUR DEVS - have moved on. It should actually be in the company's best interest to please those people as well as the general public who have actually upgraded their phones to the latest handsets as well.
Lastly, I'm not sure how many of the new features that our phones will actually benefit from, aside from the TRIM feature, which can be found in the Lagfix app in the play store. There aren't a great deal of UI changes. The only one that comes to mind is the "elimination method" that you see while dialing a number. Android 4.2 is just as nice as 4.3. But AOSP isn't for me either. I'll stick with what the HTC devs push out.
[/RANT]
In a nutshell, this is how the business works. If you don't care about buying the latest and best, than they don't charge much about you. While I don't agree with it, I don't want to hear whiners who complain about it. Oh well. That's how it feels.

aw damn, beat me to my own post lol, I knew somebody was going to see that and post it on XDA
Saw that earlier on his Twitter feed. I think too many people assumed that since he said we weren't getting 4.3 that we weren't getting updated at all, which isn't the case, at least according to his info.
Is there a clear understanding when htc will get this update. I heard end of september or sometime october, and that the update would be 4.2.2 with sense 5 and that would be the last major update for the phone. P.S. sources say sprint already has the update but, it is under review. I am trying too find the rdf weblink for the phone too see exactly with coming soon too us, but the rdf link i have only shows back when the phone was released.
This is the only link I have too get the latest update rdf info from sprint
